On April 21, Rochester Mayor Ted Denton was in a particularly good mood. Our appointment had been set to discuss a $1 million Community Crossing grant from Indiana Department of Transportation; however, he had also recently learned of an $11 million Next Level grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs for the expansion broadband in Fulton County. Denton credited “Showcase Rochester Day,” an event held in November 2021, for tilting the odds in Fulton County’s favor. Speakers included Rochester Telephone Company Fiber Communications President Joe McCarter, Rochester Schools Superintendent Jana Vance and Chamber of Commerce Director Jillian Smith. Attendees included OCRA President Denny Sinner, as well as David Behr and Sarah Salisbury of Indiana Economic Development Corporation. “I am convinced the meeting in November helped push it over the top,” Denton exclaimed. McCarter agreed. “The mayor felt like RTC was one of the entities that set us apart, along with our schools,” said McCarter. The showcase provided an opportunity for these officials to hear directly from Rochester Telephone about RTC’s “commitment to serving our customers… We were one of the first companies in the country to build fiber into homes in our exchange.” According to McCarter, round three of the Next Level was Fulton County’s first opportunity to apply because it was based on addresses rather than census blocks. “These grants are out there because no one can afford to do it,” he said. This realization on the part of state government is now proving beneficial for Fulton County, where a large percentage of residents are under the 25 mg minimum needed for efficient broadband. School nurse enjoys taking care of people %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 *XHVW :ULWHU “I discovered at an early age that I enjoy taking care of people,” stated Kelly Howard, Rochester. “My grandmother was paralyzed and in a wheelchair when I was growing up. I’d go to her house after spending a half day in kindergarten and help my mother take care of her each day. I believe I decided even then that I wanted to be a nurse. Taking care of people of all ages is my specialty. Being a school nurse is especially fun.” After earning her degree in nursing from Grace College, Winona Lake, Howard worked at Woodlawn Hospital for 22 years. It wasn’t until her children were in sporting events that she became a school nurse. “My husband Jeff and I enjoyed going to our kids’ sporting events. So, my first position was at Columbia Elementary. I spent five years there and had the best

siastic about school nurses as the elementary students. When you hear a compliment from them, you really treasure it. But I have marvelous interactions with them.” Howard’s day starts at 7:15 a.m. “I get the computer running and the medications out. The kids start coming at 7:45 for their morning meds. Students on particular medication schedules come throughout the day. I also do vision and hearing screenings. It’s also my responsibility to check to make sure students are fully immunized.” RHS has grades 8 through 12. “The eighth graders go out to recess. So, I get some bumps and bruises to patch up from time to time. And there’s the occasional student who wants to get out of school early and comes to me with a complaint. Unless they have a temperature over a hundred or are vomiting, I send them back to class. They have to be visibly sick to go home.” She’s seen some changes in the kids since the COVID-19 pandemic. “They were isolated, and their normal routine was disrupted. That’s difficult on any of us. We work hard here to reassure them. Some of them discovered that they really like coming to school. I’ve heard many say they are so glad to be back on a regular schedule.” Her advice to those who want to be school nurses: “Start with some hospital experience. That’s an area where you’re surrounded by doctors and other nurses. Then try home healthcare. You can experience being on your own there. When you are a school nurse, you are the healthcare professional. You’re on your own and faced with making many very important decisions.” Howard loves the staff she works with at the school. She also enjoys relating to the students. “Sometimes with high school students, I have to work hard to get underneath their protective shell. But once I’m in there, we have a marvelous relationship.” She and her husband Jeff live on a farm. They raise corn, beans, cows and pigmy goats. They have three grown children and five grandchildren, ranging in ages from 12 to a year and a half. “I love it that the grandchildren live within a two-mile radius of us. I love having my family so close.”

OBITUARIES Jack J. Hedrick Truck Driver

Jack J. Hedrick, 58, passed away at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Lutheran Hospital of Fort Wayne. On Jan. 24, 1964, Jack Jay was born in Rochester to Roy Lee and Carolyn Lee Smith Hedrick. Jack and Mary Louise Kelly were married on April 9, 1983. Their union produced three beautiful -$&. - daughters. The family tree continued to grow with +('5,&. the additions of 11 grandchildren. As a truck driver, Jack transported double-wide homes across the country. He loved being on the road, riding on his black Harley-Davidson DYNA Super Glide with orange flames. Taking the grandchildren for rides on the motorcycle and the dirt bike was always a great time. Loving nature, Jack fished for pike in various lakes in Michigan and had recently been kayaking in Florida. During hunting season, he often targeted the raccoon. In the winter months, the snowmobile was enjoyed with his daughters. Throwing a ball to Penny was almost a daily event. Locally at the 4-H fairgrounds, he drove in the Demolition Derby and the Figure 8 Races. To relax, he watched NASCAR and WWE Wrestle Mania. He was a member of ABATE. Left to cherish Jack’s memory are three daughters, Leslie (Scott) Wilburn, Rochester, Laura (Brad) Wreglesworth, Mooresville, and Michelle (Michael) Haselby, Star City; lifetime friend, Mary L. Rochester reaping Continued from page 1 in Town Hall is a small board room dominated by a white board upon which are listed 16 projects in various stages of development. Since taking office six years ago, Denton said, 50 projects have been completed. Infrastructure projects, he maintained, are often ignored by “bureaucrats” because they lack visibility. However, whenever it rains, Rochester’s storm water drainage problems are hard to ignore. This is because the system has not been upgraded “since horses were on these streets,” Denton remarked. To address the situation, Rochester is using American Rescue Plan Act funds in combination with the recently acquired Community Crossing Grant to not only continue street paving, but

also increase storm drain capacity of those streets. On April 21, a surveyor from Commonwealth Engineers could be seen on Main Street preparing for the work, which will be done in phases starting in July with Second to Sixth Streets. Previously, INDOT repaved SR 14 to Ninth and Main Streets. This approach of working “backwards” from downtown was designed to not interfere with the Chili Cook-Off and Red Hot Car Show in October. Surveying the projects on the white board, which include the city pool, Nickel Plate Trail, pickel ball courts and many more, Denton reflected on a motto used by his mentor Dick Belcher, founder of First Federal Savings Bank, “I’m committed to doing things that will leave this place better than when I found it.”

There were 18 retirees in attendance. Stephenia Barkman called the meeting to order and invited each one to give their name and a favorite Easter memory. There were several stories told, like the hollowed-out chocolate bunny that was saved in the refrigerator for later only to find someone had eaten the back, probably an ornery brother. Another family who hid a lot of colored eggs in their yard, only to have one youngster find a real blue bird egg, look at it and replace it until another came along and picked it up and, not knowing it was real, squeezed it in her hand. There were many stories of mothers making new Easter dresses for their daughters and some mishaps with brothers taking out trash with patterns and fabric inside, to watching great-granddaughters finding their first Easter eggs with money inside that made a lot of noise when shaken. The Pledge of Allegiance followed and Linda Wade gave the blessing before the meal. Kay Horn gave the minutes of the October 2021 meeting and the treasurer’s report of $722.05. No

Local areas to receive funding for roads Governor Eric J. Holcomb and Indiana Department of Transportation Commissioner Mike Smith announced today that 224 Indiana cities, towns and counties received a combined $107.8 million in state matching funds for local road projects through Community Crossings, a component of the governor’s Next Level Roads program. Local entities receiving funds and amounts include: Cass County — $1 million Culver — $177, 735.77 Hendricks County — $677,994.50 Marshall County — $1 million Rochester — $1 million Wanatah — $118,380 Winamac — $125, 400 “Continuing to modernize and enhance our transportation infrastructure is critical to the economic success in and around our incredible communities and ultimately Hoosiers’ prosperity itself,” Holcomb

said. “Community Crossings makes immediate impacts on improving local roads and bridges across Indiana. Those improvements translate to a safe, reliable, robust transportation infrastructure that benefits residents and business in every corner of our state and every place in between.” The Community Crossings initiative has provided more than $1 billion in state matching funds for local construction projects since 2016. Communities submitted applications for funding during a highly competitive call for projects in January. Applications were evaluated based on need and current conditions and impacts to safety and economic development. Funding for Community Crossings comes from the state’s local road and bridge matching grant fund. “Community Crossings improves safety and reliability of local roads as well as enhances connectivity in all 92 Indiana counties,” Smith said.

“INDOT is excited to join with our local partners to deliver on these highpriority projects and I look forward to the transformative effect of this work in our communities in the months ahead.” To qualify for funding, local governments must provide local matching funds of 50 percent for larger communities or 25 percent for small-

State law requires annually that 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. State lawmakers identified long-term funding for Community Crossings as part of House

Those working to decide on the Teacher of the Year award this year included a panel of TVSC staff members, a school board member and a community member. During the meeting, a video high-

lighted the four honorees. One of the people who talked about Engbrecht in the video was TVHS Principal Brandon Kresca. “Mr. Engbrecht is a true professional that does whatever it takes for his students,” he said. “Mr E. is not only a teacher, but a rock-star educator. Thank you, Mr. E., for teaching at Tippecanoe Valley High School.” All four teachers received plaques with Engbrecht receiving an additional plaque and decorative apple.

Each week I co-facilitate 3 recovery groups alongside my husband Hector for Adults, Youth and Inmates of Fulton County jail. Every day we are face to face with individuals begging for help to be the Parents, Children, Siblings, Aunts, Uncles and Grandparents God created them to be, instead of being broken and chained to their addictions. Travis Heishman is not only qualified for the job as Fulton County Sheriff, but he has a vision to help people in recovery. He knows it’s not enough to just keep pulling those in addiction out of the water. He has a plan to go upstream and figure out why they’re falling in, and how to do what is needed to keep them out. If addiction hasn’t hit close to your home, consider yourself blessed and unique. Let’s have compassion for those who aren’t as fortunate and work together to fix this epidemic of losing loved ones to addiction. Someone’s life is depending on it. Fulton County Historical Power Show coming Fulton County Historical Power Show is coming to Fulton County Historical Society grounds June 10,11 and 12. Times are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, June 12. The Power Show will include antique tractors, garden tractors, hit-n-miss engines, equipment and antique trucks, barrel train rides, onsite parade, demonstrations and more. There’s something for all ages. Each year a different tractor and local business will be featured. Vendors for swap parts, crafts, food and more will also be available. All colors are welcome, finished or unfinished. Contests for exhibitors such as antique tractor games, tractor pulls, a toy show and more will be sponsored by the Fulton County Historical Power Association and Fulton County Historical Society. A breakfast buffet will be served in the museum until 11 a.m., then lunch until 5 p.m. The museum, round barn and living history village will also be open to anyone paying admissions to the festival, and free parking will be available. The museum and toy show all require paid admission to the grounds for this festival weekend. Admission is $3 for ages 12 or older Friday and Saturday only. Sunday is free for children 11 and under. At the rapture, those of us who are still alive will join other brothers and sisters in Christ, and we will meet them in the clouds. Our bodies will not have the same limitations that they do today. Not only will our busted bodies be put back together, but you and I will literally be able to walk on cloud nine since we will have a resurrected body like his (see 1 John 3:2). Since those alive will join those who are coming back with the Lord, this clearly proves that believers who die immediately go to be with the Lord (1 Corinthians 5:8). What are we supposed to do with all of this information? God wants us to encourage one another with these words. As we walk alongside other believers, we should encourage them just as the Holy Spirit does. We are called to comfort others when they are hurting — in the same way we expect them to comfort us. An ignorant Christian can become a hopeless Christian. And as sure as wrong doctrine leads to wrong beliefs, wrong beliefs lead to wrong living. To know

the truth is to be set free from the hopelessness of ignorance. As Jesus said, the truth shall set us free (see John 8:32). What kind of ignorance is Paul concerned with? Here he mentions those who are asleep, referring to people in the Thessalonian congregation who have died. Their living loved ones were afraid that they had missed the rapture. But Christians need not grieve like, those who have no hope because they are uncertain of what happens after death (if anything). Paul reminds us that for the Christian, death is not the end. It is the beginning of a brand new life. Paul told the Thessalonians that Jesus is coming back (see John 14:1-3). Now we see how he is coming. Apparently it will be a loud event with the Lord himself descending from heaven with a shout. Jesus came the first time like a whisper. Most people, in fact, missed him. But no believer will miss him the second time. What will Jesus be shouting when he returns? When Jesus comes back, he may shout, “Come forth!” And the believer’s old body, decayed in the grave, is going to jump back to life again and be
