After graduating from mortuary school, she followed her heart to northern Indiana to start a life with Blaine Hartzler, the love of her life.

take care of the family business, he knew I was in good hands with Blaine,” she said.

Hartzler and Blaine were married in September 2010. They are both licensed funeral directors and even though Hartzler is not currently working in a funeral home setting, she keeps her license active.

After a six-month apprenticeship at a funeral home in Mentone, she worked at Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation for nine years.

During her time at TVSC, she worked as a teacher’s assistant at Akron Elementary and then as the extracurricular activities treasurer at Mentone Elementary.

In 2017, there was a vacancy at the Akron clerk’s office and Hartzler was appointed to finish the term.

She is currently completing her first four-year term and hopes to continue to be able to serve the community for the next four years.

Hartzler’s responsibilities as a clerk include being a fiscal officer for the town, budgeting, overseeing the town’s payroll and working with the police, street, water and sewer departments. Her position also requires continuing education classes.

In addition to the supportive people she works with, Hartzler enjoys being the point of contact for residents when they are seeking information and the relationships she has developed with the customers.

“I am thankful the community has accepted me and supported me in this position,” she said.

She fondly recalled how one resident never wanted the pennies from his change when paying his water bill. Hartzler always insisted he took his pennies so the drawer would balance at the end of the day. “When he and his family chose to move out of town a few years ago, he came in to pay his final bill, and he paid it all in pennies,” she chuckled.

“I have always felt if I’m going to be there to support my kids in everything they do, I can give back as well,” she said.

“I think many people feel they don’t have time to volunteer, but you don’t have to spend hours doing it … A little bit of volunteer work goes a long way,” she added.

Hartzler and Blaine have three children: Britta, age 8; Katey, age 6; and Camden, 8 months.

They enjoy spending time together outdoors — swimming and walking — and taking an annual vacation with their family at Kentucky Lake.

“I am thankful to be raising my family in the town of Akron, it’s been a great place to call home,” she concluded.

and Psalm 24 the chief shepherd coming for the sheep (1 Peter 5:4). In other words, Christ died for us (past), Christ lives for us (present), and Christ will come for us (future).

This psalm presents the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in Psalm 22:1-21 and his resurrection in Psalm 22:22-31. Since the Jews did not know of crucifixion back in David’s time, this vivid description of Christ’s death on the cross could only have been penned by inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

It is interesting to contrast the two sections of this psalm.

In Psalm 22:1-21 we see Christ’s suffering and crucifixion, while in Psalm 22:22-31 we see his glory and resurrection. The first passage depicts pain and prayer; the second passage depicts praise and promise. And the first shows Jesus Christ in the midst of his enemies; the second, Jesus Christ in the midst of the church.

It is not difficult to see the fulfillment of this chapter in the New Testament story of the cross. In Psalm 22:1, Christ spoke these words in Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34. In Psalm 22:2, alternate light and darkness is seen in Matthew 27:45.

In Psalm 22:6-8, the reproach of

the people was witnessed in Matthew 27:39-44.

In Psalm 22:11-12, no help was offered to Christ in Matthew 26:56. In Psalm 22:16, Christ’s hands and feet were pierced in Matthew 27:35. In Psalm 22:17, people were staring at Christ in Luke 23:35. In Psalm 22:18, soldiers were gambling for Christ’s garments in John 19:23-24.

At Psalm 22:22, the scene changes, and we move into his resurrection. See Hebrews 2:1112 for the New Testament explanation of this. Christ is no longer on the cross; he is in the midst of his brethren (the church) declaring the glory of God. Psalm 22:24 must be read in connection with Hebrews 5:7. This final section is filled with praise: in the church (Psalm 22:22), in Israel (Psalm 22:23-26), and among the Gentiles (Psalm 22:27-31). Verse 31 (New King James Version) ends, “He has done this,” paralleling Jesus’ words, “It is finished.”

Because of Christ’s work on the cross, salvation has been accomplished and all who come to him by faith will be saved.

OBITUARIES Linda D. Rudd Retired From Logansport State Hospital Linda D. Rudd, 65, Rochester, was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away at 11:50 a.m. Sunday, April 10, 2022.

Linda Diane Conley was born Nov. 15, 1956.

She was a treasured daughter of Oddis and Rebabelle Swango Conley. Growing up she shared her childhood with four brothers. Linda was a member /,1'$ ' 58'' of the Rochester High School class of 1975. She was a vibrant member of the RHS cheerleading squad and also was a baton twirler.

On Oct. 6, 1984, Linda married David Lee Rudd in Rochester. Together they shared 37 years of life’s adventures. Linda worked at the Logansport State Hospital as a special attendant until her recent retirement.

Gifted with her hands, Linda was an artist. She recreated many items with her special touch. Vincent Van Gogh was her favorite artist.

To relax, she enjoyed listening to classic rock.

Left to cherish Linda’s memory are her husband, David; children, Tara Lease (Mike) and Matthew Miller and companion Cassie Carroll, all of Rochester; four grandsons, Jacob Lease, Joshua Lease, Matthew Lease and Memphis Miller; three brothers, Dennis Conley (Laura), Tom Conley (Charlotte) and Jim Conley (Kim), all of Rochester; and her treasured canine companion, Alis, the beautiful black and tan special blend. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding Linda in death are her parents; an infant sister, Linda Kay Conley; and a brother, Larry Ehlinger.

The Rudd family will receive friends and celebrate Linda’s life from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester.

He married LaVonda Clifton Aug. 1, 1965. She survives.

Lori Miller, whom several people described as being like a mother to Mentone first responders, passed away unexpectedly at age 60 on Monday, April 4, while on vacation in Tennessee. She’d had a long career with Mentone EMS before her retirement.

Her death “leaves a real hole in our community,” said Mentone Fire Chief Mike Yazel. He said Miller, whose husband Doug is one of Mentone Fire Department’s assistant chiefs, was like “a mother hen to the firemen and EMS.” Mentone EMS Director Tony McKinney agreed, saying they referred to her as “Mama Lori.” That was due to her offering support to others on the team when they dealt with tough situations.

Miller began her career with the EMS in 1994, starting out as a driver before becoming an emergency medical responder, then training officer.

She trained current Mentone EMS Operations Supervisor Bobby Asher.

He noted she was “eager to teach, eager to mold” new emergency workers.

Her compassion for helping victims was also contagious, he said.

Though their jobs involved dealing with serious situations, Asher noted a favorite memory of Miller was how she once made a joke to McKinney.

He said Miller and McKinney were headed out to an emergency when their ambulance hit a bunch of turkeys. She later presented a stuffed turkey to McKinney.

Miller also provided support in the first responders’ lives, said Asher. He said Miller was one of the first people he spoke with after his mother passed away recently. He shared with her how he was angry with God for letting his mother die after she battled so much else.

He said Miller helped him deal with the situation. “Not only did I lose my real mom (recently), I also lost my EMS mom,” he said.

Community Service Additionally, Miller helped others in the community by volunteering at various events. She helped with fish fries and passed out doughnut holes to kids at the fire station on Halloween and water to runners during the Mentone Egg Festival’s race.

The latter was an activity her

friend, Mentone Town Council President Jill Gross, enjoyed doing with her. The two served together on Mentone EMS’ board, with Miller being the current vice president and Gross the president. Miller also served as its president for a time.

Gross said a favorite memory of Miller was one time years ago when the circus came to Mentone. She remembered Miller riding on an elephant with Gross’ oldest daughter.

She was “a true friend,” said Gross.

Full Of Energy Miller may have been able to tackle many causes due to her energy. Yazel described her as “a real energetic person.” Her pastor at Beaver Dam United Methodist Church, Butch Troke, recalls Miller being in “constant motion.”

It’s been a number of years since Miller was a cheerleader while at Tippecanoe Valley High School, but her passion for causes continued on through the end of her life. Gross called her “the biggest and best cheerleader the EMS could have had.”

“When she cared about (something), she cared about it all the way,” said Troke.

That included her work with the church’s Wheels on Fire-Cancer Crusaders. The group has raised more than $161,000 to help those battling cancer in Kosciusko and Fulton counties. Miller was a founding member of the organization and was serving as

Troke praised Miller’s cheerful spirit. “If you’d want to have your day perked up, you’d talk to Miss Loribell,” he said, referring to his nickname for her.

He and Gross also noted Miller’s faith. Gross called her “a prayer warrior,” saying Miller had prayed for her while she struggled with health issues. Troke said Miller’s faith encompassed her life. “She lived her faith every day,” he said.

Matt Craig for Fulton County Sheriff Dear Editor, My name is Jim Hubbard and I am writing to let the citizens of Fulton County know I am supporting Matt Craig for Fulton County Sheriff. I have known Matt Craig since he was a small boy due to my relationship with his parents, Melody and John, and his grandparents.

I remember when George Craig was county commissioner and owned Craig Welding in Newcastle Township. This has given me the opportunity to watch Matt grow into the dedicated, reliable and family-oriented man he is today.

Matt worked at Craig Welding and propelled himself into the supervisor position before he started his law enforcement career as a reserve on the Fulton County Sheriff Department in 2007. The next year, he was hired on as a full-time merit deputy. In 2013 Matt became a se-

nior deputy.

Beyond his duties as a road officer, Matt is a general instructor at the Law Enforcement Academy. He is certified in both the instruction and use of taser equipment and the use of drones. Matt works alongside others on the reconstruction of auto accidents. Along with all of this, Matt was just recently a swim coach at Tippy Valley High School.

Mystery Dinner Theatre presents ‘Murder Under the Big Top’ “The Circus is coming to town!” are words that bring excitement to people of all ages. Death-defying acts, the awe of acrobatic feats, the amazing animal acts, the clowns, the side shows, the food — they all stir the imagination.

But on the other side of the ring are real people who experience the same hopes and dreams, likes and dislikes, jealousy, fear and revenge as the rest of us. Circus people are known for being one big family. But even the closest families harbor secrets. And one of them will protect his or her secret at all costs.

“Spine chilling attractions” may have a whole new meaning!

Like most businesses, the Peru Circus Festival has been severely impacted by COVID-19. “This year’s Festival broke records, but we still haven’t overcome the absence of the festival from last year,” said Jenny Cole, board member of the festival.

Mayhem 4 Hire also experienced a year of hardship. “Our Mystery Parties are traditionally very interactive and, since for months audiences have been unable to gather, we’ve had to cancel many scheduled parties,” said Pat Piper, creator and owner of Mayhem 4 Hire.

So the two businesses are collaborating on a circus-themed murder mystery fundraiser for the Peru Circus Festival.

The setting for the mystery is a local venue following the three-

day run of The Malvasia Circus, a national traveling circus with all of the traditional acts of a historic circus. The board members have decided to throw a small party for the performers to show their appreciation, but an evening of fun and relaxation turns into tragedy as a member of the circus hears his last applause.

After purchasing tickets online at www.mayhem4hire.com, each attendant will be emailed party information, including name and bio, before arriving at the event.

Everyone is given a clue or two to share. Check-in at The Riverview Event Center, 421 W. Canal St., Peru, is from 5:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Saturday, May 7.

Tickets are $35 a person and include the mystery and a threecourse dinner plus hors d’oeuvres.

There will be a cash bar. Tickets will not be sold at the door, and sales stop two days before the event due to time needed for communication with attendees before the show. Adults only.

“We had so much fun, and would definitely be interested in another mystery. Great job planning. Lots of laughs,” endorsed Kim Tracy and her team from last summer’s Lake Manitou Mystery.

P litics Two Republican primary candidates running for county assessor %\ $/,621 +$1'< 6WDII :ULWHU Kasey Hensley will face challenger Jen Becker in the Republican primary race for the assessor seat. The Republican candidate selected in the May election will run unopposed as there is not a Democrat on the ballot.

The assessor’s responsibility is to identify and appraise taxable property in Fulton County to determine assessed value.

Kasey Hensley Hensley, who has been working in the county assessor office since 2019, has also worked for Fulton County for the last 13 years. She has Level I, Level II and Level III Assessor-Appraiser certifications.

She is proud to accomplish all three certifications in less than three years.

She has 13 years of experience navigating Fulton County government at various levels, including exemplary performance evaluations with the county. In addition, she has 10 years of submitting approved budgets in detail to the Fulton County council, sitting on a county board, and has conducted PTABOA, which are appeal hearings, along with completing reassessments, sales valuations and valuing new construction projects, as well as many other things.

“Government shouldn’t make it hard for the people,” stated Hensley. She explains her running for county assessor is for the people.

“I’m tired of watching taxpayer’s dollars being wasted with zero control. They deserve more than a person to fill a seat.”

Where does she see the assessor’s office going? She has

multiple goals for the office. Top priority would be for there to be 100% in-house reassessments.

According to Hensley, doing inhouse reassessments could save an estimated $40,000 annually.

Public education is another intention of Hensley’s. “Most people don’t understand how their property is evaluated or how to read their property card,” she expressed. “I want to work with area high schools to educate students and I want to establish offsite locations to assist taxpayers with their questions during reassessments.” She noted the public needs access to the assessor, so going to different areas throughout the county makes this possible. “It’s so much simpler in person to teach and educate the taxpayer.”

Hensley has an objective to have communication and coordination with the local fire departments. “I would like to figure out a way to get that line of communication between us and those emergency services so when there is a loss of a structure we can make that a smoother and quicker process for our taxpayers.”

“The county citizens deserve a supportive leader and worker who hears them. I would be their biggest advocate. I’ve really made a point as well as I can with other Fulton County offices so we can help out as many people as we can.”

Jen Becker Becker is emphasizing her long history of working in the assessment services throughout the state of Indiana. “My entire adult life has been dedicated to the profession of assessing.” Although she has lived in Fulton County

throughout her life, she has 25 years’ experience in assessing and consulting for county assessors in more than 30 Indiana counties.

She has held her Level I and II Assessor-Appraiser certifications since 1998 and received her Level III certification in 2013. She has even been a Level I and Level II Assessor prep and test training instructor.

To Becker, Fulton County is home. “Fulton County is the county that raised me,” explained Becker. “I wanted to come back, close to home. … My plan is to settle back down here at home; I’ve traveled and I’m ready to be home.” She said she was always planning to run for assessor, and now just seemed like the right time to do it.

In agreement with Hensley, Becker wants to keep reassessments in-house. “I know how to do it, so I can,” she stated. “It’s hard, stressful, but can be done.

Let’s do it together and it will and should be less expensive.”

Becker wants to bring more awareness to local residents about the responsibilities of the assessor’s office and the information available to them. “I love to

teach people about assessing,” she stated. “Taking 10 minutes with a taxpayer to help explain and establish a relationship is all it takes.” She intends to establish a couple days a week the public can come in specifically for questions and concerns regarding their assessments and or property cards. “I care about the citizens of Fulton County. They are not taxpayers, they are my neighbors.”

She believes Fulton County Assessor’s office is doing a good

job. “She (Judy Dancy) has run a good office,” she said. “You have to evaluate the office first; you can’t just come into the office and shake everything up.” With working so closely with multiple different county officials and offices, Becker shared that every office is different; however, she has been able to witness what works and what doesn’t.

Becker emphasized that residents will see her in the field. “I will be the assessor at your front door.”

Historical Society hosts poverty studies Fulton County Community Foundation, Area Health Educations Center and CASA of Fulton County are holding two workshops designed to bridge the gap between misconceptions of poverty to understanding. A “Poverty Simulation” runs from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, and an all-day workshop, “Bridges out of Poverty,” will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 27. Both events will take place at Fulton County Historical Society and require registration.

The Circles Indianapolis poverty simulation produced by Community Action of Missouri is an interactive immersion experience that sensitizes community participants to the realities of poverty. This is free for all participants.

The Bridges out of Poverty workshop provides both social service providers and community members key lessons in dealing with individuals from poverty. Participants will create a mental model of poverty, review poverty research, examine a theory of change and analyze poverty through the prism of hidden rules of class, resources, family structure and language. The workshop cost is $20 with lunch provided.

Many think of retirement as “fun.”

Little do they realize that once retired, they may miss the camaraderie they once had at work, or the sense of purpose or even the feeling that they have a lot more to offer.

Whether you are new to the area or have been here for a while, there is an organization that provides a way for people in the county to give back to community by using their skills to help others.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Fulton County has more than 200 volunteer members. Anne King, director of RSVP, said, “Once you are retired there are opportunities to do a service for the community with a purpose. Some people help weekly; some might only do it a couple times a year, as little time or more if they want.” RSVP volunteers are building ramps, tutoring, visit-

ing, grocery shopping, computing, knitting, serving, driving and much more.

RSVP is America’s largest volunteer network for people age 55 and over. RSVP of Fulton County matches the talents, skills and experiences of volunteers with challenging and exciting volunteer opportunities at area nonprofit agencies, schools, government offices and other organizations. King noted RSVP coordinates volunteers with approximately 33 locations throughout the county.

“There are only 15 RSVP programs throughout the state of Indiana. Fulton County is lucky to have this program, as the closest other one is located in Fort Wayne,” King stated.

King explained RSVP is a national, federally funded program. RSVP must match 30% of the federal grant that supports the organization. They raise the funds with help from the United Way, community donations and by working with the recycling center, along with selling green car-

Fulton County 911: always there, always ready %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU April 10-16 is National Telecommunications Week, and to celebrate, Fulton County 911 Director Gail Karas and Shopping Guide News decided to shed a light on the 911 dispatchers who do so much for our safety, but rarely receive recognition of the sort given to other emergency responders.

Part of this, said Karas, is by design. Dispatchers, she explained “are very private.” All too often, what recognition they do receive is negative.

This may be a result of the public’s misperceptions about the job and its challenges. For one, Karas noted, “Seconds do not save lives. Accuracy saves lives.” In fact, the job of a 911 dispatcher is considered one of the most stressful in the country.

nations for St. Patrick’s Day. Another way they raise funds is by teaming up with Donna Riddle, travel agent, to take bus trips. A portion of those profits supports RSVP. This year RSVP has three trips planned: Cape Cod in May; Washington, D.C., in July; and Nashville in December.

All of the bus trips are preplanned with a travel itinerary and all are welcome to join.

Although volunteer opportunities were curbed since the pandemic hit, opportunities are beginning to become more readily available now.

Currently RSVP is looking for volunteers to help with medical transportation, friendly visitors, grocery shopping, interactive storytelling and so much more.

Volunteers from RSVP are also providing free, IRS-certified tax preparation for those who are elderly and or have low income. Last year they helped provide citizens an estimated total of $60,000 in refunds.

Should the volunteer be more inclined to office-type work, there are opportunities as well, working within the RSVP office, helping with newsletters or for other local nonprofits where office help is definitely appreciated. Opportunities to help in either of the local hospitals or their related facilities are also available.

however, on the federal level they remain in the “administrative” category. “Most states are changing the status of 911 dispatchers due to the high stress, PTSD and lifesaving skills that surround the 911 profession. That is why they are called the ‘unsung heroes.’

Karas referenced one of Walt Disney’s slogans when describing the functionality of the Fulton County 911 call center: “Striving for perfection, settling for excellence.”

“Are we perfect? No, but we strive for perfection. As a team we do more than just answer the phone. It takes a team, not just one person. We have two people on at all times and sometimes three.”

Dispatchers are “master multitaskers,” said Karas, with a total of seven screens they utilize to complete a call as they are talking to the caller, police, fire and EMS, “typing as we go.” And although the dispatchers do text, “voice is best,” Karas emphasized.

“We can only hear and not see what is going on, so the pain is real.

We cry, pray, laugh and joke … we are very sensitive people as well. Please stay on the line so we can help you and the responder get the help you need quickly and accurately.”

At the end of the day, Karas commented, “We may go home exhausted, but (we) feel so humbled by helping you we come back the next day.”

In spite of the stress, Fulton County 911’s staff of 11 — including two experienced part-timers — has maintained some longevity and currently ranges from one month to 24 years on the job. “We are a work family,” said Karas.
