Indiana library standards require libraries to create a strategic plan every three-to-five years.

“The last plan was three years ago,” recalled Fulton County Public Library Director Andrea Stineback. “Three years goes by very quickly.”

And then there was COVID, which, she added, “put a wrench in everything.”

So in August 2021 with a $7,000 grant from Fulton County Community Foundation, Stineback hired consulting firm ReThinking Libraries to help create

a new strategic plan. The ensuing process of collecting data included community surveys and seven in-person focus group discussions. The planners heard from more than 300 respondents, a respectable number for a community of Fulton County’s size the consultants informed Stineback.

The FCPL board will vote on the finished plan at its April meeting.

Among the discoveries made during the process was the need to increase public awareness of FCPL’s branches outside of Rochester. “A lot of people don’t even know we have branches in Fulton and Leiters Ford,” said Stineback.

A metaphor for FCPL’s system

was provided by the trees in its arboretum, located on the Rochester campus, which board and staff members alike agreed is the “perfect symbol” for FCPL during a recent retreat.

The arboretum is also an example of another issue, said Stineback: “How to better use our space.” She feels the arboretum is “severely under-utilized,” and with better seating and different programming, this could change.

Many people, said Stineback, have “preconceived notions of what libraries are … they’ve changed so much in the last few years.” Libraries are reflecting technological changes such

as streaming movies and music with increased digital resources.

For example, FCPL is part of the Indiana Digital Library, a consortium of nearly 200 libraries sharing access to e-books.

But this does not mean physical books are going away. “Our physical collection is huge compared to other libraries,” she noted. Among the challenges for the future will be finding the best way to utilize available space for the library’s diverse clientele.

The planning process also discovered a need for improved preteen and teen spaces. Interestingly, some teen respondents called Continued on page 3

Since we’re now empty nesters, we want to make a positive impact on not only our community, but our county.

That’s why we started the Pulaski County Tribe, a not-for-profit organization that was structured to raise the morale of people.”

The Larkins noticed there was a lot of turmoil and political unrest in their community. “People seemed to be suffering from a spirit of apathy.

After a trip to Colorado to hike and clear their heads, the Larkins were making their way back to Winamac and started to think about ways they could implement what they had seen in other areas in Pu-

thy in her own community. “I could either complain about the situation. I could do nothing about it. Or I could try to do something to make a difference.” She chose the latter.

“I put a post on Facebook explaining that I was interested in bringing back positivity to Pulaski County. I asked who would like to help.”

Since she and Kevin had been active in their community in the past, Larkin knew people who were shakers and movers. “I wanted to form a group that would communicate with organizations, businesses and residents in Pulaski County.

Then my goal was for us to collaborate together to implement projects and offer activities to spark positive focus in the communities.”

The Pulaski County Tribe was born. “Since I knew very little about running a not-for-profit organization, another of our board members and I signed up for a sixmonth course given through our local Community Foundation and got our certification.”

Larkin has learned as a community or county effort, each person doing their part, an organization does not have to have a large budget to make a difference. As part of a group of local volunteers, Larkin helped bring back hope to the communities countywide.

“We banded together to implement artwork projects such as bike tire art flowers and a crane mural.

Pooling our resources with various other organizations, this past July we had a ‘Summer Celebration’ in Winamac. In November, we held a ‘Hometown Holiday’ in Francesville. All of these projects and events utilize the talents of many.

We can get so much more accomplished when we work together.”

“This coming May 7th, we have ‘Art in the Park’ at the Winamac Town Park. All of these events also give visitors a positive view of our area. We have great plans ahead.”

Larkin admitted she has spent many weekends and late nights planning various projects and events. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it when you see the lift in the spirits of others. The community involvement of many allows a sense of pride to ripple throughout the county.”

Hand-in-hand with the branch system is the need to create more partnerships and outreach opportunities in the community. In fact, there are upcoming examples of FCPLs work in this area.

From 4-7 p.m. April 9, FCPL will cohost open readings at Native Nook, 616 Main St., Rochester. The readings will celebrate poetry month and give local writers 10-15 minute time slots to read their original compositions.

This event and others like it will “give the library a chance to get out in the community and meet people who may not use the library,” said Stineback.

FCPL will also collaborate with Indiana Humanities’ “One State, One Story” project for the third year in a row. This year’s reading is “World of Wonders,”

prove very useful. The number of children being homeschooled is “increasing rapidly,” noted Stineback, and she expects the library to respond in kind. “We are a good resource for them.”

Laura Louise Lane Holliger, 95, formerly of Frankfort, went home to be with the Lord Thursday, March 24, 2022, at her home in Rochester.

She was born in Wichita, Kan., July 24, 1926, to Henry Wm. and Blanche Jane (Conger) Lane. She married Samuel I. “Sam” Holliger Dec. 7, 1947, in Peoria, Ill.; he preceded her in death Dec. 6, 2015. /$85$ / Laura graduated from Pekin High School in Pe+2//,*(5 kin, Ill. In 1950, Laura and Sam moved to Frankfort so he could pursue his lifelong dream of working for the Nickel Plate Railroad.

Upon his passing in 2015, she moved to Rochester. In addition to raising her family, Laura worked for W.F. Woolworth then went to National Seal (Federal Mogul) for 41 years, retiring in 2014. She loved spending time with her family, crossword puzzles and was an avid reader.

She formerly attended the Apostolic Christian Church in West Lafayette and the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Frankfort, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, served on the church council and delivered Meals on Wheels. While living in Rochester, she was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church, where she was the cutting edge of the LWML Mission stamps.

Surviving Laura are her four children, Jeri Ann (Jack) Kieninger of Rochester, Kathy Jean (Robert) Kieninger of Shelbyville, Michael Douglas Holliger of Rochester and James Russell (Barbara) Holliger of Lynn; brother, Malvern (Jean) Lane of Harlington, Texas; nine grandchildren; 20 greatgrandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her parents and husband, Laura is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Susan; sisters, Lynas Leeds and Marjorie Jansma; and a brother, Ronald Lane.

Visitation will be from noon until the time of the service at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at Genda Funeral Home in Frankfort, with Pastor Curtis May officiating. A livestream of the service will be available online at www.gendafuneralhome.com for those who would like to join virtually. Burial will follow in the Bunnell Cemetery in Frankfort.

In lieu of floral arrangements, memorials in Laura’s name may be made to the St. John’s Lutheran Church, 404 Jefferson St., Rochester, IN 46975.

Jeffery Lee Spencer, 66, Macy (Nyona Lake), passed away at 6:47 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 3, 1955, in Logansport, the son of Dixon Spencer and Betty Jean (Gearhart) Spencer DeWitt. On July 27, 1996, at his home on Nyona Lake, he married Julie Lind; she survives.

-())(5< /(( Mr. Spencer had been a tool and die maker 63(1&(5 for more than 44 years in Logansport. He was an avid bowler, having been a member of USBC Bowling League for many years. He was passionate about fishing, mushroom hunting and following his favorite sports teams, Indiana University, the Chicago White Sox and the Green Bay Packers. He enjoyed spending time with family having cookouts, playing cornhole and playing euchre.

Survivors include his wife, Julie Spencer, Nyona Lake; sons, T.J. Spencer, Rochester, and Kyler Spencer, Logansport; grandchildren, Patrick Gage Mathew, Logansport, Jacob Spencer, St. Petersburg, Fla., Ashlynn Spencer, St. Petersburg, Fla., Nicolle (Killian) Bailey, Fishers, and Joey Spencer, Rochester; sister, Barbara Mathew, Logansport; brother, Jerry (Tina) Spencer, Logansport; daughter-in-law, Trisha Spencer, St. Petersburg, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Jeremy Spencer.

Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, March 28, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester. Burial followed in the Fulton Cemetery. Friends visited from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Visitors were encouraged to dress casually in memory of Jeff during services.

Judy A. Jones, 81, Argos, passed away at 7:34 p.m. Sunday, March 27, 2022, at Hickory Creek of Rochester.

On June 30, 1940, Judith was born in Rochester to Rex and Ruby Newcomb Halterman. Growing up, she shared her childhood with a sister and two brothers. Proudly she graduated with the class of 1957 -8'< $ -21(6 from Richland Center High School.

After 22 years of service working on the assembly line for Eaton Controls of North Manchester, Judy retired in 2001. As an avid sports fan, she watched everything from basketball to figure skating.

NASCAR was a favorite; she loved watching the Earnhardts, both Sr. and Jr. Relaxing in the recliner, watching her Cubbies win was a great way to spend her afternoon. She was very well organized and a collector of many things. Many treasures could be found shopping at flea markets and Toto.

Judy cherished the time with her family, and she often prepared formal dinners for them. Her zucchini relish was always garden fresh. The tasty potato salad was shared with her family and special friends. Judy kept journals, recording the special times and memories that she shared.

As a 15-year breast cancer survivor, she was very thankful for the time with her children, grandchildren, family and friends.

Left to cherish the memories of Judy are four daughters, Sheri Jacobson and husband Jim of Rochester, Kimberly Eastwood of Argos, Patricia Jones of Argos and Jackie Whetstone and husband Bob of Macy; a son, Kevin Jones of Warsaw; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Halterman and wife Marilyn of Rochester and Ned Halterman and wife Jane of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Judy in death are her parents and sister, Sue Tillman.

A celebration of the life of Judith A. Jones will be at noon Saturday, April 2, at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Chaplain Todd Wilson will officiate. Friends may visit with the family two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. The family asks that you wear casual attire. Friday, March 25, 2022, at Woodridge Center, Logansport.

Bre Felix honored through donations to AWL %\ /($+ 6$1'(5 6WDII :ULWHU Brelynna “Bre” Felix loved animals.

Her aunt Ali Steyn noted the Akron girl had a dog named Mia and “some stray cats she took in against her mother’s wishes.”

Therefore, her family recently opted to honor Bre by collecting items for the Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County.

March 2 would have been Bre’s 13th birthday, and March 5 marked four months since she passed away when she was hit while walking along SR 19 outside Akron in Fulton County with her brother Isaiah Felix and others.

Steyn said the family gathered to commemorate Bre’s birthday and also organized a fundraiser to collect donations for the AWL. Tippecanoe Valley Middle

School, where Bre attended, helped gather items, said Steyn.

In the end, roughly 50 items, including sanitary wipes, dog and cat food and treats, toys and towels, were donated to the AWL. AWL Executive Director Tonya Blanchard said the donation was “a total blessing for us.”

She added the league was planning to request dog food from the public because its supply was low, but the league then got the donation.

“God works in mysterious ways,” she said.

“I believe she would have felt an overwhelming sense of love as community members, family and friends came together to honor her in this way,” said Steyn of Bre. Steyn also said Isaiah, who was injured in the accident Nov. 5, 2021, is “doing well with all things considered.”

“He has a final checkup at Riley’s on Monday to make sure his jaw healed properly,” she said.

Steyn also said gathering items in honor of Bre helped the family.

Farming Boyer Cattle Company passed down the family line %\ .(,7+ .1(33 6WDII :ULWHU Kevin Boyer is new to the cattle buying business, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been around it throughout is lifetime.

Officially, he bought Boyer Cattle Company in Mentone from his father, Don, in late 2021. He’s now a third generation cattle buyer, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, Lawrence.

Don was involved in the industry for more than 60 years, starting in 1959 buy purchasing cattle and bringing it to the sales barn in Liberty Mills.

Throughout his career, Don toured stockyards across the Midwest, buying hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of head and getting them transported back to Indiana for slaughter.

For the past 25 years, he was working for Cargill in Pennsylvania, purchasing and selling exclusively for the them.

After a couple bouts with COVID, Don finally decided to hang up his boots. He’ll turn 90 in May, but if it was up to

him he’d keep on doing what he loved.

Kevin took over Boyer Cattle Company last fall after talking with Cargill, who gave him the green light to take over for his father. He’s still learning the ropes of the business, even though he has seen his father at work for six decades. “So far, so good,” he said.

Kevin noted the type of cattle that is being bought and sold for slaughter has changed dramatically, especially since COVID became part of our vocabulary.

No longer are slaughterhouses looking for “fat cattle” that have traditionally produced the finer cuts of beef, but now are more interested in lean cattle, which includes retired dairy cows that have outlived their milking usefulness. Part of the reason, he said, is many restaurants have closed in the past two years and the ones remaining are looking for ground beef rather than choice cuts.

ly 1,500 acres across Fulton, Marshall and Kosciusko counties. Traditionally they split their acreage between corn and soybeans, however with supply issues looming over this year’s planting season they may end up planting fewer acres of corn.

“You can’t grow corn without nitrogen,” he pointed out. “Anhydrous has gone way up in price. Last year we were paying around $480 a ton. We prepaid late last year for what we will need (around 65 tons) this spring at $1,475 a ton. Now I hear the price is up to around $2,000. The problem is, even though we prepaid, we’re not sure whether they will even have it to deliver to us. Fertilizer costs right now are unreal, if you can even find it. So is weed spray, which is three or four times as expensive as it was in the past. Our chemical guy said they’re expecting to get around 75% of what they sold last year.

On top of that, a lot of fertilizer is imported from Russia.”

He added things like parts to repair the tractors and other farm equipment are hard to

come by, and when you can find them they are exponentially expensive. Those costs will eventually make their way to consumers, exacerbating the already inflated prices on nearly everything.

“The milk guys are saying their prices are going to increase,” he said. “So they’re hanging on to their dairy cows longer than they ordinarily would. That means it’s harder

Farming White Oaks Bison Farm has big plans in Fulton County 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ .(,7+ .1(33 6WDII :ULWHU “What’s the difference between a bison and a buffalo?” is a question that has been posed to Terry Engstrand on numerous occasions. The answer? Nothing.

The terms are interchangeable and refer to the same animal according to Engstrand, co-owner of White Oaks Bison Farm, located in rural Fulton County, northeast of Rochester.

For the past year-and-a-half, Engstrand and his fiancée, Courtney Eaton, have been educating themselves on everything there is to know about the American bison. While still endangered, the population has stabilized to around 500,000, a number that has fortunately increased since the species’ near extinction in the late 1800s when the population dropped to 325. As recently as 1910, the number hovered around 1,000 — a far

cry from when an estimated 30-60 million roamed the Great Plains in the 1500s.

After conducting their extensive research and preparing their farm for their arrival, Engstrand and Eaton brought their first herd of bison from a supplier in South Dakota to rural-Fulton County. In October 2021, pulled by a friend’s Ford F-250 truck, a trailer filled with 10 bison, ranging in age from six months to two years.

Engstrand and Eaton admitted the trip was one of the most stressful times in their lives, not only because of the amount of money they had invested that was not penned in a large trailer behind them, but also because of the physical challenge of safely getting the truck and trailer from point A to point B without incident. As Murphy’s Law goes, the trip was not without difficulty. At one point, a tire went flat on the trailer and needed repair.

Their plan is to breed the animals on the farm. Eventually, they plan to butcher some of the animals and sell the meat, which both Engstrand and Eaton describe as delicious.

Later this spring, White Oaks Bison Farm will be open to the public, offering an opportunity to view the majestic animals up close. They plan to offer tours of the farm to include learning more about the bison before having an opportunity to meet, feed and take photos with the animals. They have plans to offer a tractor-pulled wagon ride around the farm, as well as a variety of fun activities.

The farm will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. every Sunday from May 1 through Dec. 18. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children 10 and younger. School groups, classes and large groups are welcomed by appointment.

Farming Burton family maintains active role in Fulton County Farm Bureau %\ .(,7+ .1(33 6WDII :ULWHU Last year the Kevin Burton family were among the three finalists for the prestigious Indiana Farm Bureau Young Farmer & Ag Professionals Achievement Award. While they didn’t ultimately win the top prize, being part of the process and finishing in the top three in the state was a huge accomplishment and has opened many new doors for the family’s business.

Ultimately, the LaPorte family winning the award also went on to represent Indiana and actually won the same award in the national contest.

“Being in the top three was incredible,” Burton said. “We had the opportunity to meet with a lot of experts, including with financials. It allowed us to reflect on where we started, where we are and how we can grow. It helped us establish realistic goals. It gave us the opportunity to learn a lot about ourselves and become better people in our daily lives and forced us to do a lot of thinking on ourselves and broaden our assessment of what we do.”

The Burtons own a diversified operation that includes row

crop farming, including corn, soybeans and hay, as well as owning a few calves. Burton holds degrees in agriculture business management and crop production from Ivy Tech, although the degrees are sponsored by Purdue University. He puts his academic knowledge to good use, offering custom service to other farmers throughout the region. He advises them on crop planning and production, including analysis of their fields, to help realize the land’s maximum potential yield.

“We work with the farms to determine what is best for them,” Burton said. “We help determine what fields need to be targeted and which ones need to be in a longer rotation.”

One of the biggest parts of his custom service is providing and spreading chicken manure on his customers fields. Burton said he purchases the manure from large chicken operations and then resells it to his clients in smaller quantities. He went on to explain not all chicken waste is the same.

There are many factors that go into the value of the product, including the age of the bird, what it is being fed and the amount of moisture in the manure. The amount of nitrogen, phosphorus

and potassium in the manure dictates its value and usefulness in the field.

“It matters if it’s a young chick or an old hen,” Burton joked, adding they process and sell around 27,000 tons of chicken manure each year.

He noted they also must follow and abide by a variety of state requirements implemented in 2012. The Burtons are licensed and insured to handle and sell the product, and “treat it the way it needs to be treated.”

Burton explained his wife, Kimberly, plays an integral role in cataloging the type of manure being sold to each individual client and then billing them accordingly for the product provided.

Burton also praised her for managing the day-to-day responsibilities of the farm, including the coordination of meals, helping to move equipment to the proper fields and other logistics that are necessary to maintain an efficient operation.

The Burtons remain active Farm Bureau members, having served as the Young Farmer and Ag Professionals co-chairs for Fulton County Farm Bureau since 2015. They are parents to three children.

Farming Glen and Chris Jones recognized for conservation practices %\ .(,7+ .1(33 6WDII :ULWHU In February, Glen and Chris Jones were formally recognized by the Fulton County Soil and Water District with the River Friendly Farmer of Indiana award during the organization’s 82nd annual meeting. Officially, the Joneses were named Fulton County’s River Friendly Farmer of the year Aug. 18 during a ceremony at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

The award was presented by Indiana Farm Bureau President Randy Kron and Trevor Laureys, director of soil conservation for the Indiana State Department of Agriculture. During the cere-

mony, other families from around the Hoosier State also were presented with the same award for their efforts in their specific counties. The River Friendly Farmer Award program began in 2000 and has honored more than 1,000 Indiana farms.

The Jones farm currently produces sheep, alfalfa hay, pasture timber and row crops by a tenant.

Jones uses intensive rotational grazing. All riparian areas have been converted to hay or pasture.

No till and cover crops are required of his tenants on row crop areas. His soils are mostly alluvial or outwash with coarse textures. Wind erosion, low organic matter levels and drought are major concerns on the outwash

soils. The practices he incorporates have helped to mitigate those issues. They have reduced sedimentation into the streams from erosion and have trapped sediment during period of flooding along the Smith Ditch.

The River Friendly Farmer of Indiana award recognizes farmers for their implementation of conservation practices such as no till and cover crops, which ultimately protect waterways and improve water quality in Indiana.

The Joneses were nominated by the Fulton County SWCD for his commitment to protecting the Tippecanoe River, next to which much of his property lies, through such conservation efforts.

Glen is very involved in outreach regarding the protection of natural resources. He assists with the Arrowhead RC&D River Expedition for high school students and has served on the Fulton County SWCD board for many years.

“It’s nice to be acknowledged for the work we do,” Glen said.

“We didn’t implement these practices with the idea of receiving an award. We just felt it was the right thing to do for the environment. But, it’s nice to see that other people appreciate it.”

Additionally, for the past 35 years, the Joneses have raised countless generations of sheep on their Hidden Valley Farm. They have bred and sold Polypay sheep since 1987 and are nationally known for their sheep and their meticulous record keeping of lineage.

Saluting The

Nearly $500,000 in federal grant funds available Indiana State Department of Agriculture, beginning Feb. 15, will seek project proposals from Indiana’s specialty crop sector for funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. Eligible projects must enhance the competitiveness of specialty crops in Indiana, defined as fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, horticulture and nursery crops.

“Indiana is home to an abundance of agricultural sectors, including a robust specialty crop industry that contributes significantly to our economy,” said Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, Secretary of Agriculture. “The funding through this program, whether that be research, market development or education and training, will help to greatly advance this industry in our state.”

The USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant Program offers federal funding annually to the state departments of agriculture to support their specialty crop industries. Indiana’s allocation is $486,095.35.

ISDA created and distributed a funding priority survey in early 2022 for specialty crop funding; respondents included stakeholders across the specialty crop industry.

Based on the survey suggested projects included enhancing food safety, pest and disease control, developing organic and sustainable production

practices, and developing local and regional food systems. When the application opens please refer to the notice of funding opportunity for a full list of suggested projects.

Funding will not be awarded to projects that benefit a particular commercial product, or provide a profit to a single organization, institution or individual. Each project must identify at least one of the new USDA performance measures that specifically demonstrates the project’s impact on enhancing the competitiveness of eligible specialty crops.

“These funds have the potential to make a substantial impact on the specialty crop industry,” said Bruce Kettler, Indiana State Department of Agriculture director. “I encourage those involved in the specialty crop sector to apply and work toward further supporting this industry and enhancing its significance in our state.”

Applications opened Feb. 15 and are due by 11:59 p.m. ET March 8.

Proposals must be submitted online through the Indiana State Department of Agriculture’s Grants Management System. ISDA will host a SCBGP webinar for interested applicants on February 22. Registration information is available on ISDA’s Funding Opportunities website.

He explains for cattle, usually his dad helps him pick an animal out of their own herd. They look for the build of the cow, the way they walk and the structure of the animal.

Shriver mentioned picking an animal from their own herd is more cost effective as there is a lot of money put into showing. “We raise our own animals and make the most of what we can.”

They typically wait for their calf to be weaned from their mother before they start pushing the feed harder on them. Shriver stated it takes about a year and half from selection of the animal to show time.

It’s spring time, which means Shriver is now beginning to transition into getting the hair of the livestock ready in preparation

to be show quality. “You have to shed the dead hair out to get the new hair to grow and come in thicker,” he noted. “We condition their coat once a day.”

For swine, they usually buy their pig based on what they think will grow the best. They push feed on the hog along with walking them once or twice a day to help them gain the structure they are looking for. He joked he thinks the swine are simpler to raise than his cattle.

Right now Shriver is working with his 4-H animals for about one to two hours a day, but that will increase to about four to five hours a day once the weather gets warmer and school is out so he has more time with the animals.

Shriver is not ashamed in the beginning he wasn’t as successful at the county fair, but after many more years of experience things started to change. Last year he won reserve champion market heifer and grand champion Angus steer.

“It’s bittersweet,” Shriver shared about his 4-H experience coming to an end. “I am glad that I can move on to the next chapter in my life, but I will miss it for sure. There have been times in the past were I wanted to not do this, but overall I know I’ll miss it all.”

Shriver continues to share advice for the younger students in 4-H. He encourages them to stick with it and don’t give up, as that has been his biggest lesson he has learned in the program himself.

“Learn as much as you can, ask around and see, there is a lot of knowledge that others have.”

Shriver plans to attend trade school in December next year to become a welder, until then he will continue to work on the farm.

Consumers want food made with U.S. crops The United Soybean Board (released results of a new survey, highlighting consumer perceptions of U.S. soybeans, soybean farmers and the U.S. food supply chain. According to the survey, consumer support of domestic agriculture has only grown stronger, with 78% of consumers — an 8% increase since the last survey in December 2020 — saying it’s important to purchase U.S.-grown food, including soybeans.

“It’s encouraging to see support of U.S. agriculture increase over the past year, a true testament to the work of soybean farmers through their checkoff to strengthen consumer perceptions of U.S.-grown soybeans,” said Belinda Burrier, chair of USB’s Communication and Education Committee and a soybean farmer from Maryland. “Understanding our customers’ attitudes is a critical component as our investments aim to demonstrate the nutritional value of soybeans, ultimately increasing demand and bringing value back to the farm.”

Other key takeaways from the study include: • U.S. farmers continue to be the most trusted source when it comes to food safety, with 83% of consumers ranking them No. 1 among members of the supply chain, an increase of 5% since the last survey in December 2020.

• The vast majority of consumers, 82%, have a very/somewhat positive view of U.S. farmers who grow crops, including soybeans.

This is a 3% increase since the

December 2020 survey.

• Soy is seen as healthy by more than half of consumers, with 60% saying soy-based food is somewhat/very healthy and 26% having a neutral view of soy.

However, only 39% are aware the soybeans used in popular foods are grown sustainably.

With promotion and education being key pillars of the checkoff, the survey validated informing consumers is an effective tool, with 72% of respondents feeling more positive about soy as a food ingredient after learning about the sustainability of soybeans.

Likewise, communicating about soy as a high-quality “complete” protein proved to be the most impactful statement on consumers’ perception of soy, highlighting an essential opportunity to demonstrate its excellent protein profile to health-conscious consumers.

“Driving home soy as a complete protein, coupled with awareness that this product is sustainably grown, poses a real opportunity for our industry to raise the profile of soyfoods,” said Mace Thornton, vice president of communications and marketing strategy for USB. “Insights from this survey will inform investment decisions of the checkoff’s farmer-led Communication and Education Committee and ultimately help deliver sustainable soy solutions to every life, every day.”

Sharing field trip experiences with homeschoolers %\ $/,621 +$1'< 6WDII :ULWHU The Heckathorn family has welcomed a group of homeschooled children and their families to their farm to provide them with a field trip type of experience. Wagon rides with draft horses and saw mill demonstrations took place at the family home of Nathan Heckathorn, just 12 miles south of Rochester, in Miami County.

A saw mill is a large machine used for sawing logs into rough squared sections or into planks and boards.

Heckathorn purchased his first saw mill in 2000, however he has continued to learn and grow with running his own mill. Currently he is on his fourth saw mill, which is a 1952 model. The blade he had on the saw had 52 teeth to make the cuts. He and his nephew, Dean Heckathorn, demonstrated how the saw mill can maneuver and cut large logs into small

lar breed of horse. Each horse weighs about 2,000 pounds and can pull up to 15,000 pounds as a pair. Heckathorn explained these horses are raised and trained to be competition weight pulling horses, similar to a tractor pull you would see at the county fair. Although lightweight pulling horses aren’t as popular in Indiana, this event is quietly favored in other states like Michigan and Wisconsin.

Kelly Neidermyer, who owns draft horses as well, is from western Wisconsin and a friend of Dean. Since she was in the area for a horse sale, she said she would help him with the field trip. Her horse, Blondie, helped pull the wagon alongside Dean’s 15 year old pulling champion horse, Chief.

Dean’s other horse, Hank, was anxiously awaiting visits from visitors to give him pets.

Shonnie Weller, who is the niece of Heckathorn and cousin of Dean, is a member of the Miami County Home School Educators and was essential in planning this field trip along with many others for the homeschool communities in the area. Fun was had by all, after the saw mill demonstration, the horse drawn wagon ride continued as did games in the yard followed by a picnic lunch.

They may not be records, but they are close.

The gross receipts will be flowing in this next season, unfortunately the money will continue to flow out the other end as we are looking at some of the highest input prices for corn and soybeans. Leading the pack is fertilizer. Prices for nitrogen fertilizer have skyrocketed during the last year. According to USDA, anhydrous ammonia prices during January 2022 were triple from what they were in January 2021. Anhydrous prices in 2020 were around $400 per ton and now today they hover around $1,400.

The other two big fertilizer inputs are phosphorus and potassium. Potassium went from the mid $300 to $800 per ton. Phosphorous is usually sold as Diammonium phosphate and it is now 78% more expensive and in the mid $800 per ton area.

Then the Russian-Ukrainian standoff enters the market. Russia is a major player in the fertilizer industry, producing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potash. By placing sanctions on Russia, we will limit the supply. This would first affect Europe and lead to possible fertilizer shortages and price spikes.

Europe also depends on Russia for about a third of its natural gas supplies. Natural gas is needed to make nitrogen fertilizers. As all of us have noticed the price of fuel has also inWildlife Ear Cornn

creased. Transportation costs have risen right along with the fuel cost and general labor shortage.

Another agriculture input is pesticides. This would include the weed, insect, and disease control products.

There is a significant shortage of glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup herbicide, and a lot of other generic products. Prices for this herbicide have risen from $10 per gallon a year and a half ago to $60 per gallon in 2021, and prices are expected to rise to $80 per gallon in 2022.

The reasons for the herbicide shortage include a decline in the number of laborers to unload tanker ships at gulf ports, lack of truck transportation from the ports to get the ingredients to U.S. formulation plants or formulated products to the retailers, reduced supplies of some of the inert ingredients of the formulation, shortages of materials to make containers and packaging, and Hurricane Ida that damaged a glyphosate production plant in Luling, La. Additionally, China is a large manufacturer of generic products. Flooding and COVID-19 outbreaks have disrupted production and exports in China for months, resulting in chemical manufacturers rationing supply.

Some other herbicides also come out of China and some of the major ones have also doubled in price but may not be in such low inventory.

Fungicides have increased in importance in the past few years as diseases, such as tar spots on corn, have become an issue in our area. Their prices have risen about 50%.

The next factor is the land cost.

Cash Rents Survey suggest farmland prices across Indiana have risen to all-time highs in June 2021. Statewide, top-quality farmland averaged $9,785 per acre, up 14.1% from the same time last year. Since that time most would say that land values are continuing to increase at higher than normal rates. Cash rents have also increased and about 50% of Fulton County farmland is rented.

Other costs that increased are machinery, seed, labor, and interest rates. All of these costs have gone up as well as the price being paid for the crop. It sounds like an offset situation. Then you throw in the unpredictability of the weather where the farmers still have all of these input costs but the yields are down. Down yield should mean higher prices.

But we are in a global market. Just because our yields are low, doesn’t mean the same in Iowa. Drought is the big unknown, but flooding and wind can also come into play.

We have grown up in a country where supply shortages were virtually unheard of. That is not the case anymore. Our agriculture producers will also be scrapping for much input this spring and they all count. We cannot do without any one of them.

Putting on high-priced fertilizer but not getting weed control is a financial disaster.

County stepping up patrols to enhance school bus safety Fulton County Sheriff’s Office will be out in full force this spring to ensure students remain safe when traveling to and from school.

During the next couple of weeks, officers will be positioned along bus routes and in school zones where they will be on high alert for stoparm violations, speeding and other forms of reckless driving.

The overtime patrols are part of the state’s Stop Arm Violation Enforcement program and funded with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grants administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.

“Every time you see a bus, slow

down, be ready to stop and watch for children,” said Sheriff Chris Sailors. “If the overhead lights flash red and the stop arm extends, you are required by law to stop.

Under no circumstances, should you speed up in an attempt to beat the bus. That’s beyond reckless and puts every child boarding or exiting the bus in danger.”

The department joins more than 200 police agencies for the spring enforcement campaign, as part of an ongoing effort to prevent reckless driving in school zones and around buses. Last year alone, more than 2,700 drivers were cited for stop-arm violations by Indiana

law enforcement, according to ICJI. To address this, officers will be conducting high-visibility patrols in the morning and afternoon hours along routes identified in cooperation with local bus drivers and school transportation officials.

“The only way you’re going to miss those — the activated stop arm and flashing lights — is if you’re on the phone or not paying attention to the road. That choice can be deadly.”

As part of the campaign, the department is urging motorists to slow down, pay attention to the road and to never pass a bus that has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. This applies to all roads with one exception. On highways divided by a physical barrier, such as a concrete wall or grassy

“I would embrace representing all in my district and county regardless of political labels,” he said. “I feel sometimes the average Joe out here has not been represented very well, and I will look at everyone on a level playing field. I truly care about Fulton County and those who call it home. I want to see our young people stick around and continue to lie here. We need good paying jobs opportunities for our young people.”

1. During the next decade, what is the most critical issue facing Fulton County and its residents?

Denton — “Rising taxes and continued ‘unchecked’ spending by the county. We are quickly joining the ranks of counties that have lost their attractive position of being an economical county to live in, especially with the high-income tax for the working population. This will impact not only those considering investing here, but those deciding whether to continue to live here.”

Gundrum — “We’ve to figure out a way to lower our tax rates.

Our spending is out of control.

We need to retain jobs here in the county, convince new people to come and keep the ones we have. I don’t know how we can keep taxing and spending. We need to work within a budget.

It seems like we’ve lost sight of that.”

2. Why do you believe you are well suited to address that issue?

Denton — “The county council needs to become more engaged with all county elected. More questions and due diligence needs to be done by council members before agreeing to borrowing monies or changing budget directions without very good reasoning and accountability.

You do not always need to have all the answers, but it is important to be asking all the questions.”

Gundrum — “We need someone to reconsider things. We can’t keep taxing the people. I want to be a voice for the common working man. I don’t have an agenda. I want to be a servant for everybody. I’ll bring common sense. I’m not a career politician.

I want to address what is really important and need to have others participate in the process.

We’ve lost our moral compass and I’m all or getting back to our old-fashioned values.”

3. If you are chosen in the primary, how do you intend to get your message and vision out to the voters of Fulton County?

Denton — “I will continue to reach out by all means available using local media and going door to door. I would also invite constituents to contact me and will remain accessible now and after elected.”

Gundrum — “I’ve been advertising, handing out cards and going to ‘meet the candidates’ opportunities. I am open to anyone who wants to give me a call. I’ve met a lot of people in the county.

I’m just a common guy.”

TVHS encourages student input in academics %\ /($+ 6$1'(5 6WDII :ULWHU Tippecanoe Valley High School staff are working to encourage student input regarding academics.

This was discussed during TVHS Principal Brandon Kresca’s annual update to the Tippecanoe Valley School Board during a meeting Monday, March 21.

Kresca said TVHS staff all received the book “Empower: What Happens When Students Own Their Learning” by John Spencer and A.J. Juliani through a grant.

He said the staff had been working to implement principles from it into the way they teach.

“The whole idea … is that you move from students who are compliant, you know simply rule followers, obedient … to engage students, so students who are on task, completing work and things, to empowering students to learn,” he said.

He then had several teachers and students share how students have worked to implement their own ideas for classroom projects and such.

Student Porter Rich gave the presentation on cryptocurrency he

created as a project of his own for a math class to the board. TVHS business teacher Aaron Engbrecht and his students Sarah Finney, Rachel Luce and Andie Schwenger, also shared how students have made choices regarding learning in his classes.

NG3 Program Also as part of the update, Darren Parker talked with the board about the new NG3 program at TVHS. Parker is a former TVHS teacher and coach.

According to provided literature on it, “NG3 is a non-profit, faithbased organization that invests in the lives of high school students through intentional relationship building, character development, serving the community and mentorship-style small groups known as ‘CORE Groups.’”

NG3 stands for “Next Generation: Character, Community, and Change.” Leaders in the program help mentor students and invite them to participate if they choose to in weekly, off-campus, faith-based CORE Groups. No school funding goes toward the program; it’s funded by outside donations.

Parker noted TVHS is only the

fourth school in Indiana to have a NG3 program, with it having started originally in Georgia.

Let’s study the Bible The greatest act of humility (Read Matthew 23:1-12) “And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.”

(Matthew %\ 5(9 521 23:12) 385.(< In almost every instance in the Bible, as well as in life, pride is associated with failure, not success. It was pride that caused the fall of Lucifer, and he became Satan. It was pride that led King Saul down to a shameful and untimely death.

It was pride that caused Simon Peter to deny his Lord.

In the Bible the Pharisees appeared as a group during the time in Israel’s history when the nation was pressured by the Greeks to forsake their law and become liberal. Men like Ezra (Ezra 7:10) remained true to the faith, protected the law, and separated themselves from pagan defilement. They became the official interpreters of the law when Israel had no prophet or teaching priests. In this sense, the Pharisees “sat in Moses’ seat.” Jesus did not tell the people to observe everything the Pharisees taught, but only those teachings that were true to the law of Moses.

The great sin of the Pharisees was hypocrisy based on pride.

Their religion was external, not

internal; it was to impress people, not to please God. They bound people with heavy burdens, while Christ came to set people free (Luke 4:18-19). They loved titles and public recognition and exalted themselves at the expense of others. They wore boxes containing the Scriptures (“phylacteries” — supposedly based on Exodus 13:16; Deuteronomy 6:8; 11:18) and made the hems of their garments wide (Numbers 15:38) to advertise their religious zeal.

They had a “form of godliness” but no power (2 Timothy 3:5), while the borders of Jesus Christ’s garments gave forth power to change lives (Matthew 9:20; 14:36).

The greatest act of humility in the history of the universe was when Christ stooped to die on the cross of Calvary. And before any person can get to heaven, he must kneel at the foot of the cross and acknowledge he is a sinner, he has broken the Ten Commandments of God, and he needs the grace of God in Jesus Christ. No person can come proudly to the Savior (Matthew 23:12).

We must have the same attitude Jesus Christ had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave

and was born as a human being.

When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
