In May 2022, three VEX IQ Robotics teams from Caston Schools will travel to Dallas, Texas, to compete in the VEX IQ Robotics World Championships. Elementary teams C and D will join roughly 600 teams from around the world May 10-12, while the junior high’s team A will be one of nearly 800 teams competing May 8-10.

Jamie Taylor, who shares coaching duties with Karen and Roger Byrum, expressed her pride in the accomplishments of not only the teams going to Texas, but all of the Caston Robotics teams, several of which were also competitive at both

the local league and state levels this year.

Now in its sixth year of VEX competition, Caston is also seeing an increase in kids wanting to take part. “I love seeing the interest grow,” Taylor exclaimed. However, this increase has also created a need for more volunteers and funding. “We have to self fund to get to Dallas,” she noted, so any donations to the teams would be “graciously accepted.”

Though four teams reached world in 2021, the championships were virtual, which, Taylor opined, was “not the same experience” as being in the same rooms competing and interacting with children from Continued on page 3

“I’ve been retired for three years, long enough to miss the classroom,” stated Lynn Darda, Winamac.

She was an art teacher at Eastern Pulaski Elementary School for 30 years. Now she has stepped into another teaching position. Starting this past March 15, Darda began a six-week watercolor class for senior citizens at Pulaski County Public Library. A grant through the Indiana Arts Commission has made this possible. “Since I’m also part of that demographic population, I’ll be painting with friends.” Her class is part of the IAC initiative: “Lifelong Arts Indiana.” Funding is supported by the National Assembly of State Art Agencies and Aroha Philanthropies.

In order to receive her $1,000 fellowship, Darda submitted an application and went through three days of virtual training by the experts at Lifetime Arts. Some of that training was geared toward teaching creativity to the aging.

The class also covered building sequential curriculum. “I submitted my own curriculum for review.

Then I was coached to refine it.

The money I received goes for supplies and a stipend for me as teacher.”

Part of her training was in developing partnerships. “Asking for support took me out of my comfort zone. I contacted the local Psi Iota Xi sorority, and they were more than willing to partner with me and we received a Small Projects Grant from the Community Foundation of Pulaski County to help purchase quality art supplies for the workshop.”

Darda’s workshop is titled “Let’s Gogh: Adventures in Watercolor Painting.” “It’s an art discovery

/<11 '$5'$ program designed for adults, age 55 and over,” she explained. “Participants are introduced to artwork by master artists and are using visual/digital aids as inspiration on the subject of their paintings each week. Lessons will be sequential to build skills. The workshop is geared towards beginners, no experience needed. All supplies are included. We will have an art exhibit at the library May 5th, showing featured works from the class.”

Artwork has always been a means of expression for Darda.

“When I was growing up, I always had a pencil or crayons in my hand. Being the oldest sibling at home, we’d play school together and I’d always be the teacher.”

In fourth grade, Darda has fond memories of drawing in science class. “I also had an amazing art teacher at Culver High School. My teachers inspired me to excel in my artwork. I hope I’ve done the same for my students through the years.”

Darda attended Indiana University, South Bend, to get

her elementary education degree with a minor in art. She received her master’s degree from Indiana Wesleyan University.

She loves paper crafts. “I’ve taught adults in local workshops about scrapbooking and card making. In scrapbooking I not only enjoy the artistic process, but also preserving memories. I make cards for all holidays and occasions. I’m currently on a design team for Lacey Ann Designs. My paper crafting work can be seen on my Facebook page: ‘From My Bungalow.’”

She and her husband Don celebrated their 40th anniversary this past August. They have two grown children: Scott, a teacher and musician and JoAnna, an artist and employee of the Community Foundation in her hometown.

“No matter the age, I’ve always enjoyed encouraging students to explore their creative abilities. I like to meet students where they are in their skills and nurture their abilities.”

Each team’s path to the world championships was unique, said Taylor. Elementary team C, for example, spent the last two months working hard to improve the driving abilities of their robot. “There’s a night and day difference.”

Elementary team D focused on programming, which, according to Taylor, makes a big difference at the elementary level. “Not a lot of elementary school teams can program well.”

Meanwhile, the junior high’s team A managed to build an “en-

tirely new robot” in under three weeks between the end of league play and the state competition.

“In the past month they’ve been in the lab every chance they can get,” Taylor observed. This also meant getting rides to meet at 7:20 a.m. before school for optional practices.

As team A demonstrated, VEX Robotics teaches more than science, technology, engineering and math skills. “They learn to be dedicated,” said Taylor.

They also learn time management and how to strategize and problem solve with others, par-

ticularly during the sections of competitions when they are paired with members of opposing teams.

Students also keep engineering notebooks and are interviewed by judges, a process many of the students find intimidating.

All of these skills, Taylor noted, “will come in handy later in life …

It’s going to someday open doors for them they don’t realize.”

U.S. Air Force Veteran

Lt. Col. Stephen J. Rans, 78, USAF (Retired), Rochester, passed away at 6 a.m. Monday, March 14, 2022, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 24, 1943, in Rochester, the son of Donald C. and Mary (Landis) Rans. After graduating from Rochester High School in 1961, he enrolled at Purdue University. At Purdue University, he /7 &2/ earned an associate’s degree in aviation maintenance 67(3+(1 - and a bachelor’s degree in industrial education. Fol5$16 lowing his graduation from Purdue University, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.

He served during the Vietnam War and held many positions, including security police officer, flight inspection pilot, air traffic control operational pilot, communications squadron commander, command, flight evaluation pilot and command, flight safety officer. His service in the Air Force included deployments to Clark Air Force Base, Philippine Islands, the Republic of Vietnam and Sondrestrom Air Base in Greenland.

While serving in the Air Force, he completed his master’s degree in business administration from Oklahoma City University.

Upon retirement from active military duty, Stephen returned to Indiana. He began teaching at Purdue University in aviation technology. He retired as professor emeritus. As well as teaching at Purdue University, he ran the family farm that has been in his family for more than 100 years.

On April 8, 1989, in Rochester, he married Lois (Unger) Lease and she survives.

Stephen was a member of the Rochester Lions Club and had stayed active in aviation activities, including volunteering for events at WrightPatterson Air Base in Dayton, Ohio. In his spare time, he enjoyed tinkering around the farm, listening to a variety of music, attending the Wagon Wheel Playhouse and watching PBS television.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Rans, Rochester; children, Col. Tonya Rans M.D., Chantilly, Va., Jennifer (Jeff) Mullinix, Peachtree City, Ga., and Bridget (Phil Greenwood) Rans, Indianapolis; stepchildren, David (Trinity) Lease, Rochester, and Marcia (Carl) Buck, Virginia; grandchildren, Alyssa P. Nigro, Emily B. Nigro, Sadie A. Mullinix, Eliot Rans Strong, Jason M. Lease, Alexandra Lease, Amanda Lease, Jeff Buck and Christopher Buck; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Donald Lynn Rans.

Funeral services was conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester. Friends visited from 5-8 p.m.

Friday and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Burial was in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester, where military gravesides services were conducted.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rochester Lions Club or the Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts.

Richard “Dick” Dawson, 89, Rochester, passed away at 10:03 a.m. Thursday, March 17, 2022, at his home.

On Oct. 2, 1932, Richard Dean was born in Fulton County to Lloyd O. and Ethel Whybrew Dawson. Growing up, he shared his childhood with four sisters. In 1950, he proudly graduated from Richland Center High 5,&+$5' School. Shortly after graduation, Richard answered the '$:621 call of patriotism serving with the U.S. Air Force in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1955.

Dick and Karen Elaine Bowen were married May 19, 1971, in the Rochester City Park with Dick and Shirley Alber as their witnesses. They shared 50 years of life’s adventures with their blended family.

Dick was very active with community service organizations. He was a member of the Moose Lodge 1107 and a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge 2120, both of Rochester. He was instrumental in starting the Elks Lodge in Cherokee Village, Ark., which now has more than 300 members.

While living in Hardy, Ark., Karen and Dick were co-owners of Dick Dawson Realty Inc. He held a real estate license in four states for 24 years.

He was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce of Hardy. In later years, he was an executive director with Melaleuca Inc. of Idaho Falls, Idaho. The Dawsons enjoyed their air time as Dick was the pilot of their personal plane.

The six-seater Piper Lance 300 was utilized for the business to take real estate prospects up for an aerial view of properties. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, Karen was the flight attendant for the family on the pleasure trips.

Dick was honored to be included in the North Eastern Indiana Honors Flight Nov. 17, 2017.

Left to cherish Dick’s memory are his wife, Karen; and their five children, Nick Dawson, Texas, Jim Dawson, Texas, Tammy (Roy) Dittmer, Aurora, Tim (Julie) Montel and Todd (Chris) Montel; 10 grandchildren, Milton Plummer, Brandon Dawson, Adam Montel, Justin (Brittany) Montel, AJ (Betsie) Montel, Jacob Geller, Jennifer (Chris) Dittmer, Jami (Jacob) Montel, Deidre (Brandon) Dittmer and Ashley Dittmer; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marcia (Dave) Smith, Rochester, Marolyn Stemm, southern Indiana, and Darlene (Bill) Roberts, Olive Branch, Miss.; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Richard in death are his parents; two daughters, Dianna Plummer and Tammy Sue Dawson; sister, Carolyn Huxman; and greatgranddaughter, Nora.

A celebration of the life of Richard Dean Dawson was held at 11 a.m.

Monday, March 21, at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Chaplain Tim Lee officiated. Friends visited with the family one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Military honors were conducted by the Fulton County Veterans Honor Guard and the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Honors Team. Interment was in Oaklawn Cemetery of North Manchester.

Gladys H. Stahl Arbuckle, 72, Rochester, died 10:05 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester.

She was born April 2, 1949, to Everette and Thelma Brouette Mills.

She married Charles L. Stahl April 10, 1965. He preceded her in death Oct. 19, 2000. She married Larry E. Arbuckle Aug. 2, 2002. He preceded her in death Oct. 10, 2014.

Surviving is her daughter, Tammy (Ron Sr.) Clapper, Rochester; eight grandchildren; 11 greatgrandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Emily S. Scarborough, 76, Delong, passed away at 7:35 p.m. Thursday, March 17, 2022, at her home.

On July 29, 1945, Emily Sharon was born in Morehead, Ky., to Jerry Marvin and Lorraine Parker Stevens. She was the oldest of three children, sharing her childhood with two sisters.

As a homemaker, Emily treasured the time with (0,/< 6 her family. She enjoyed traveling, but especially to back 6&$5%2528*+ to her Kentucky home to visit family. While on the road, eating out and finding unique shops to explore was a great time.

Left to cherish Emily’s memory are two sons, Jerry Rainey and Del Scarborough; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Rainey, Rebecca Rainey, Jacqueline Scarborough, Makayla Scarborough and Makenzie Scarborough; two sisters, Pamela Mann and Donna Farris and husband Bob, all of Delong; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born Sept. 22, 1940, in Spring Arbor, Mich., the son of Claude and Leda (Campbell) Breidinger. On July 22, 1969, in Rochester, he married Helen I. Fry. Russ has been reunited with his soulmate Helen, who 5866(// / preceded him in death Oct. 14, 2021. %5(,',1*(5 Russ retired from the U.S. Air Force having served during the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Air Force, he returned to Rochester and worked for Comfort Inn and Super Eight Motels for more than 20 years.

He enjoyed gun collecting, going to the shooting range, bowling, watching sports and was an avid Notre Dame fan.

Survivors include his daughter, Kim Jones, Georgia; son, Ryan (Leslie) Breidinger, Rochester; grandchildren, Amy Johnson, Georgia, Alexandria Coleman, Rochester, and Elyse Coleman, Rochester; sister, Jean Miller, Michigan; brother-in law, John (Cindy) Fry, Rochester; sister-in-law, Shirley (Jack) Shubat, Oak Park, Ill.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Fulton-Liberty Lions Club will be serving Dan’s fried fish and chicken from 4-7 p.m. April 2 at the Fulton Community Building, 203 E. Dunn St. The all-you-can-eat event includes fish, chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, dinner roll, dessert and water.

No carry-out will be available and no tickets will be sold prior to the event. The cost is a freewill donation.

All proceeds will be put back into the community, with a portion going to the Fulton County Riley Children’s Hospital Fund.

Fulton County Historical Society grounds on the north side of the Tippecanoe River four miles north of Rochester on US 31 and CR 375N in the Living History Village area just south of the museum. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 23, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 24.

The pre-1865 time period includes the Seven Years War, Revolutionary War, Western Fur Trade and Civil War and portrays frontier history with tepees and historic tents and camps, foods cooked over wood

fires, music and dance, traders set up in historic buildings, traditional crafts, blanket trading. The festival is named for redbud trees that bloom by the river.

No motorized vehicles are allowed in the festival area, which is handicapped accessible. Admission will be charged, free for ages 11 and under.

P litics Two Republican candidates running for trustee in primary %\ $/,621 +$1'< 6WDII :ULWHU Two Republican candidates are running to represent the Henry Township Trustee seat during the Fulton County May 3 primary election. The candidates are seeking the party’s nomination to appear on the general election ballot in November.

Republican incumbent Ron Woodruff is seeking a second term as the township trustee. He is being challenged in the primary by Lisa Paxton.

Woodruff lives in Akron and is a former Marine combat veteran who served in the Vietnam War. He is a member of VFW Post 1343 in Rochester and serves as senior vice commander. He was appointed to Henry Township Trustee in February 2019 when the elected trustee resigned.

During the past three years, he has transformed the trustee office with updated reference manuals and the additional of a new computer system and printers, along with new and functional furniture to better operate a professional service to the voters of Henry Township. “The public needs to be able to come to you,” Woodruff stated why he located the trustee’s office at the Akron Town Hall.

As the current trustee, Woodruff has attended yearly certified training programs provided by the Indiana Township Association for its members. These classes cover all aspects of a trustee’s responsibility, including fire department funding, township assistance rules and regulations, care of cemeteries and many other topics. When he took office, he established a relationship with Work One and provides resources for Henry Township residents who

come in needing help finding work along with assistance.

The Henry Township trustee has to make sure the fire department and public safety is up to date. Just this year, Woodruff was able to get a grant of $30,000 for the Henry Township Fire Department by working closely with Fulton County councilmen and commissioners. “My job is to make sure they have the equipment they need,” explained Woodruff, “we gotta keep the fire truck running for everyone … to be prepared all the time.”

Challenger Paxton has been a resident of Henry Township for 38 years. She been an educator and advisor in the community for 30 years in addition to being a business owner in Akron.

With her background as an educator, according to Paxton, she has been able to establish close ties with a large percentage of families in Henry Township. As a trustee, her aspiration is to serve Henry Township with compassion and understanding, to serve a vast array of community needs. “My goal is to assure that all requests are addressed that are submitted,” she further explained establishing weekly office hours and accessibility to residents of Henry Township will provide consistency.

“I am dedicated to the public service aspect of the Henry Township Trustee position,” Paxton stated.

She believes in building partnerships with local organizations like United We Stand Ministries, Work One, Indiana Manpower and Comprehensive Training, and other state programs to assist residents in their particular family dynamic through the township’s assistance programs.

Paxton noted it is imperative to collaborate with the Henry Township Volunteer fire chief and the Henry Township Board of Trustees to evaluate the needs of the department, implant a plan as well as provide a solution. To her, the ultimate objective is to deliver continued excellent service in Henry Township.

“I believe that strong self-awareness, mindfulness and social fluency serve as a foundation for effective leadership,” Paxton expressed. “Ultimately, my goal is to serve Henry Township with compassion and understanding, to serve a vast array of community needs.”

Newcastle Township Trustee faces opposition %\ $/,621 +$1'< 6WDII :ULWHU As the trustee of Newcastle Township, incumbent Monica Clennon said she’s proud of the challenges and struggles she has overcome to make radical improvements to help better the lives of her constituents.

During her time in office, the township has made substantial enhancements to the Talma Community Building. This includes new water softener, upgraded kitchen cabinets, Wi-Fi access, and a renovated office. She explained Talma Community Building is a huge source for Newcastle Township.

With the changes she has implemented, the building now rents to those needing space for meetings, weddings, baby showers, birthdays and even auctions.

If elected to another term, her goal is to continue to maintain the township’s cemeteries, which have had landscape enhancements in the last four years, and continue to work on getting a new septic system for the community building as that has been an ongoing project while she has been trustee.

“After four years (as trustee), I know the community quite well and am able to see their needs, I do what I can to affiliate those needs,” she shared. “I have established relationships with a network to bring Newcastle Township to a positive

financial standing.”

Clennon continues to convey she wants to make continued efforts to improve Newcastle. “I don’t feel like I am done.”

Clennon’s opponent in the Republican primary is Megihann K. Leininger. Leininger said throughout her professional career, she’s been looking for an opportunity to utilize her skill sets to serve the community. She feels the Newcastle Township Trustee is that opportunity and would be honored to serve the constituents of the township.

“It’s important for township trustee to be transparent, fiscally responsible and to work with community partners to ensure township business is done timely and effective,” she stated, “I’m eager to increase transparency of township business, including financial responsibilities.”

Leininger has been apart of the board of trustees for the last three

years, and during that course of time she has observed the Newcastle Township has strong local businesses and a supportive tax base; she hopes to keep those relationships strong if she is elected.

“I know that in the role as the trustee, I can work alongside the board, fire departments, EMS boards, Township Partners, and stakeholders to find solutions which are beneficial to our township.”

If elected, Leininger’s goals include making updates to the outdoor equipment at the Talma building, increasing attendance at township meetings, and carry on the maintenance at the township cemeteries.

“My focus and dedication as the Newcastle Township Trustee will be on transparency, partnership for the good and a solution based mind set to drive the betterment of the township,” expressed Leininger.

The primary election is May 3.

Since 2004, owners Mike and Dianne Sopher have provided a haven for treasure hunters, and they are now open for business from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays.

Akron Flea Market is a familyowned business with humble origins dating back 30 years when it was founded by Mike’s mother, Bonnie Washburn. “It started with

a card table selling knick-knacks out front,” he recalled.

The Sophers took over in 2004, and since then the business has grown considerably. Visitors are first welcomed into a temperaturecontrolled space full of a dizzying array of collectibles of all kinds, including antiques, kitchenware, toys, televisions, DVDs and much, much more.

Two more rooms have also been added, which hold furniture, tools and household items such as appliances and also outdoor items like lawn mowers and bicycles. Everywhere one looks there is something

new and surprising.

“We have a little bit of everything here,” said Mike. And the inventory is constantly changing as the couple bring in new items on a weekly basis to maintain variety and hold the interest of their regular clientele. “Every week there are different items,” he confirmed.

Let’s study the Bible The benefits of wisdom (Proverbs 2:1-22) “That thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, %\ 5(9 521 and liftest up 385.(< thy voice for understanding; … Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.” (Proverbs 2:2-3, 5) The key idea here is of God’s protection over his own (Proverbs 2:7-8, 11-12, 16). The path of life is not an easy one, and the older we get, the more dangers we face.

The world, the flesh, and the Devil are out to defeat us, and we need the wisdom of God to keep us out of their power. Sinners are out to entice the young (Proverbs 1:10-19), and too often their temptations are so alluring they are difficult to resist. But the Christian who knows the Bible and seeks to obey it will be kept safe from their power.

The Lord’s commands to his own (Proverbs 2:1-9). Notice what we are to do with God’s word: receive it, hide it in the heart, incline the heart toward it, apply it to our lives, cry out to God for wisdom, and search the word to find God’s will. Solomon is not talking about simply “reading a chapter a day” and letting it go at that. He insists we live in the word of God and allow the word to live in us. Verse 4 compares Bible study to the mining of precious metal. The truths of the word must be “dug out” and put

through the furnace of personal experience. They must be “minted” into spiritual coins we can keep in our treasury for future use (Matthew 13:52). Furthermore, this wisdom will become a shield to our lives (verse 7) so God can protect our paths. When Christians deliberately turn from the wisdom of God found in the Bible, they are putting themselves (and others) in danger.

The Lord’s care for his own (Proverbs 2:10-22). Notice the argument Solomon gives in this chapter that begins with the “if” of Proverbs 2:1 and continues with the “then” of verse 9 and the “thus” of verse 20. If we receive God’s words and obey them, then we will have wisdom to make wise decisions, and thus the Lord will keep his promise and protect us from the evil man and the strange woman. When you

obey God, you have the privilege to “walk in the ways of good men” (Proverbs 2:20). If you follow the Word of God, you will never lack for the right kind of friends.

The wicked may appear to be succeeding, but their end is destruction (Psalm 37). The godly will be rooted in the place of God’s blessing (Psalm 1:3), but the ungodly will

be uprooted from the land. The safest and most satisfying path is the path of wisdom, the path of life. We need the wisdom of God from the word of God to protect our paths.
