Have you ever been the recipient of a green carnation on St. Patrick’s Day? If so, you’ve likely been blessed by the “Green Carnations” annual fundraiser benefitting the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program of Fulton County.

The program started long before anyone currently at RSVP can remember.

“My two predecessors were each here for eight to 10 years and they both did it, so it’s been around for a long time,“ said current director Anne King, who has been in that role for the past 10 years.

The Green Carnations project has been one of those annual fundraisers to help supplement the grant money.

Each year, RSVP volunteers call area businesses to ask them to purchase the flowers to display or hand out to employees or customers on St. Patrick’s Day. King said the flowers come long-

Rochester resident recalls his time at Topps %\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Larry Hunter, Rochester, started at Topps clothing company as a stock boy in 1964, and by 1966 he was a supervisor. “I learned as I went along. It was very handson,” he said.

Topps was established in 1938 and owned by two brothers who split their time between Chicago and Rochester. The company sold uniforms and work clothes and had four different divisions — Topps Manufacturing, Topps Garment Company, Elin Uniform Company and Edmonton Manu-

facturing Company.

Hunter worked at the 501 Main St. location for 33 years. He retired in 1997.

“When I started working there, I made $1.25 an hour,” he said.

He and his wife, Ruth Ann, lived in the country and rented a home for $25 a month. “If we got two feet of snow, there were times it’d be three to four days before I could get to town,” he recollected.

When Hunter first started, all of the garments were embroidered by sewing machines with handles the operator used to move the needle around the fabric.

As technology advanced, a programmable machine did the embroidering making the work more efficient. “You had to watch to make sure it didn’t break the threads,” stated Ruth Ann. She worked at Topps from 1987-1997.

Topps Garments clothed many government employees.

“Before they could be shipped, they’d send someone to check them. There would be 20-30 big boxes of garments and they would randomly open, count and inspect them. If anything was wrong, they vetoed them and you started all over again,” stated Hunter.

Edmonton Manufacturing had a large contract with Sears national headquarters and catalog division.

“A lot of the clothes in the Sears catalog were from Edmonton Manufacturing – coveralls, work pants, jackets, uniforms.

A semi from the Sears store in Logansport would pick up the orders from Rochester and then drive them to Chicago where they were distributed,” Hunter shared.

When it came to maintenance, Hunter stated, “If we were able to do it, we did it ourselves.”

“The biggest problem with the building was it had a flat roof.

When it would rain, or if it had a lot of heavy snow sitting on it, you’d have leakage problems.

There were times we had buckets sitting around collecting water.”

He added, “I can remember getting a call at 3 a.m. and going in to help clean up the water

Hunter spent a fair amount of time on the roof patching leaks.

Eventually the building got a rubber roof, and according to Hunter, “That was the greatest thing that ever happened because we didn’t have leaks anymore.”

In 1997, Hunter and Ruth Ann retired and moved to a house in town in 2002.

They have been married for 63 years and have two sons who live in Florida and Colorado with their own families, which include three grandsons, a granddaughter and one great-grandson.

Hunter misses the people he worked with but is enjoying the freedoms retirement brings. He and Ruth Ann enjoy antiquing and traveling. “If we decide we want to go someplace, we go. If we want to stay home, we stay home,” he said.

The couple has traveled to nearly every state except the northeast corner of the U.S., and has also spent time in Canada.

“It’s been a good life,” Hunter concluded.

‘GREEN CARNATIONS’ Continued from page 1 community has provided a tremendous response.

As it has been in the past, two days before St. Patrick’s Day, King will drive down to Indianapolis to pick up the flowers, which usually number around 2,000. The carnations are grown in South America, where they are raised using a special green dye in the water to give them their unique and beautiful color. The following day, she and her volunteers sort, cut and prepare the flowers for delivery the 17th.

King said the volunteers will deliver the flowers all across Fulton County. She has organized different routes to streamline the delivery process for the drivers.

“It’s fun to drive around town after they’ve been delivered and

see the carnations in different businesses,” she said. “Everyone comes up with a way to spread happiness with the flowers. It’s nice that people support the program. We send our volunteers everywhere in the county and the community.”

Green carnations can still be purchased through this Friday, March 11. The cost is $1.50 each, including delivery, and quantity discounts are available. To place an order, call King at (574) 2233716, or stop by RSVP inside the Fulton County Community Center, located at 625 Pontiac St., Rochester.

He was born Feb. 14, 1929, to John and Clara Evers.

A celebration of the life was held on Monday, March 7, at the Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester.

Interment took place at the Rochester IOOF Cemetery.

He is survived by his sons; Terry Heckaman, DeWitt, Mich., and Rex (Leanne) Heckaman, Nappanee, Kim (Jane) Heckaman, Plymouth; Marty (Denise) Heckaman, Etna Green; his stepdaughters; Diana Jansma, Plymouth; Marsha (Mike) Baker, Auburndale, Fla.; his sisters; Bonnie Craig, Nappanee; Joyce Overmyer, Bourbon; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; six great-great-great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his son, Ken Steinman; his daughter-in-law, Barb Heckaman; his son-in-law, Earl Jansma; his brother, Roscoe Heckaman; his sisters; Helen Montgomery; Faye King; and Jeannie Roahrig.

Funeral service were held on Friday, March 4, at Bourbon First United Methodist Church, 204 N. Washington St., Bourbon.

Burial followed in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bourbon.

A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 12, at the Silver Creek Church of God, 6504 W. 1300S., Silver Lake. Memorial visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. to the time of the service at the church.

Father-daughter dance in Akron The Akron Lions Club and Akron Parent Support Group have announced details on the second annual “Father-Daughter Dance.”

It will be held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, March 26, inside the Akron Community Center, 815 Rural St., Akron.

Girls 3 years old through eighth grade are invited to come to a magical evening of fun, accompanied by their father, grandpa, uncle or special someone. The accompanying guest must be 18 years or older.

The ticket cost is $10 per person. It includes dancing, a photo booth, games, crafts, refreshments and more. Tickets can be purchased from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at the Akron Community Center. They can also be purchased through order forms that were sent home with all Akron Elementary School students. Tickets are pre-sale only and will not be available at the door.

Caucus planned to replace Metzger as commissioner Mike Canada, chairman of the Fulton County Republican Party, announced a caucus will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, to replace elected County Commissioner Steve Metger. Metzger recently announced his resignation to allow him more time to focus on his business.

The caucus will take place in the meeting room at the new Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, located at 2006 Sweetgum Road, Rochester.

All precinct chairs are eligible to vote for the candidate to replace Metzger, who represents District 1, including Aubbeenaubee, Liberty, Union and Wayne townships.

All candidates have until 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 19, to file to be place on the ballot. Candidates must be a resident of District 1.

Public Vet will be in Rochester Monday, March 21, for a cat spayneuter clinic. If you would like to bring a cat(s), you can sign up by visiting pub.vet/ and following the registration instructions.

They ask you read the following information prior to signing up. After you register, note the clinic location and time as this information is only given when you sign up.

You are signing up for the check in which takes an hour of your time.

The clinic will last much longer, and your cat will be discharged later the same day.

Check-in will start promptly at 8:30 a.m. All cats will be checked in and discharged to your vehicle.

Do not get out of your car. A staff member will check your cat in from your vehicle. You will be given time to return to pick up your animals later the same day. No cats stay overnight. It takes about one hour of your time in the morning so plan on being there from 8:30-9:30 a.m.

By submitting the form you are only making an appointment. If you cannot attend there is no need to contact us to cancel. We understand that sometimes things come up so we expect some no shows. There is no cost for not showing up.

The cost of surgery is $90 per cat, which includes the medical exam, all surgery costs (including pre-op and post-op pain medication), any

All animals that come to the Neuter Scooter are tattooed “PV” in the left ear and the females are also tattooed on the belly. If your pet is lost, it has a much better chance if it is spayed/neutered.

If your cat is found by someone else and taken to be spayed, the doctor’s time is not wasted and the cat is not put through a redundant surgery.

Do not bring your pet to Public Vet if you do not agree with the policy.

No food after 9 p.m. the night before surgery, however water is fine.

If the cat is under three months old, you can give it no more than 20 pieces of dry food the morning of surgery.

Bring your cat and two clean towels in a clean carrier the morning of surgery. Do not lock your cat in a carrier overnight. Cats must be in separate carriers. You can put up to two cats in a carrier as long as the carrier is large enough.

Feral (wild) cats must be in a live trap and confirmed feral by staff to qualify for subsidized spay/neuter service.

pray. Jesus prayed at his baptism (Luke 3:21), before he chose the 12 (Luke 6:12), at the transfiguration (Luke 9:28), before he was arrested (Luke 22:40-44), on the cross (Luke 23:46), and at other times (Luke 5:16; 9:18). The 12 soon learned the importance of prayer.

What we call “The Lord’s Prayer” should probably be called “The Disciples’ Prayer,” because it contains things that did not pertain to the Lord Jesus. This is a “pattern prayer” that helps us organize our prayer burdens so they comply with the will of God. Note the pronouns referring to believers are all plural, for this is a “family prayer.” We may pray in solitude (Matthew 6:6), but we do not pray alone, for we are a part of “the whole family” (Ephesians 3:14-15). When we pray, we must put God’s concerns first (Luke 11:2) before we come with our requests (Luke 11:3-4).

True prayer is based on sonship and not friendship. This is not a parable teaching “persistence in prayer” (although that is

an important factor) but the willingness of God to care for his own.

If a weary, stubborn neighbor finally helps his friend, how much more will a loving Heavenly father (who never sleeps) meet the needs of his own children. Yes, we should “keep on asking, seeking, and knocking,” not to break down God’s resistance but to reveal to him our great concern his will be done. It has well been said, “The purpose of prayer is not to get man’s will done in heaven but to get God’s will done on earth.”

Believers today need not pray for the gift of the Holy Spirit, since the Holy Spirit lives in each of God’s children, but we should pray for the “good things” of the Spirit (Matthew 7:11) that we need for building character, guiding conduct, and empowering for service (Ephesians 1:15-23 and Ephesians 3:14-21). Christian, pray for one another.
