While numbers have dramatically increased since the beginning of the pandemic, home schooling is not a new concept. According to a report from the Bellwether Education Partners commissioned by the Walton Family Foundation, nearly 2.6 million students have switched from traditional learning to home schooling since 2020, almost doubling the number of children learning outside of the traditional system. Recognizing this trend, Kewanna Library Director Charles Rude and local education proponent Linda Ruhl set out to assist area families who have opted to teach their kids at home. Two years ago, the church began offering the “Homeschoolers @ the Library” program, which meets at 2 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month, with the exceptions of June and July. Ruhl, a retired educator, puts together a unique science program for the students each week. “Each month we study a different science topic,” said Ruhl. “We use hands-on experiences to learn science in a fun way. Home school programs at the library allow students to experience concepts ﬁrst-hand.” Attendance varies from month-to-month, but often times families bring other families or friends. Nicklaus has fond memories of being a farmer’s wife %\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 )HDWXUH :ULWHU “I was a city girl,” stated Marie Nicklaus, Rochester. Nicklaus grew up in Winamac which is where she met her husband, Floyd. In January 1948, they were married and she became a farmer’s wife, an occupation she quickly fell in love with. The couple farmed together for 57 years. “We lived in Kewanna for 20 years,” she said. “We farmed for other farmers in the area and moved around quite a bit.” After farming for others, the opportunity came up to purchase a farm in Rochester just down the road from the farm on which Floyd grew up. Soon after, they were able to buy Floyd’s childhood home, too, and have been there ever since. They had two sons and a daughter who died from leukemia at age 7. “I did about everything there was to do on the farm,” Nicklaus recalled. “We had wheat, corn, beans, hay, and livestock. I drove tractors, combines, milked cows,

fed hogs and raised 500 head of chicken each year. There’s really nothing I have not done.” She even helped a veterinarian with an emergency cesarean on a sow once. “It was just me and the vet, he performed the surgery and I held the sow steady,” she said. Ultimately the sow did not survive and Nicklaus was left with 10 baby pigs to care for. “I went to the house, got a big box, ﬁlled it with straw, and put it behind the stove to help keep them warm. For six weeks I fed the babies every two hours until they were fully weaned,” she stated. Nicklaus also shared a story of an unruly dairy cow. “I once had a milk cow that was being trained to stand in the stanchions but she did not want to stand. Someone had told me if you want them to stand, just bring their tail up toward their back. Well, that didn’t work,” she recollected with a laugh. The cow got out of the stanchion, jumped over the bottom half of the Dutch door, and ran toward the

woods. “I just let her go. Eventually, she came back, but I never tried that again,” she said. “I was up every morning at 4 a.m. It didn’t matter what the weather was — rain, snow, ice — without fail we got up to do the chores.” After a long day of chores, Nicklaus would come in and make dinner for her family. “My husband had to have pie, cake or cookies every day with every meal. So, I baked a lot of pies and a lot of cookies. And, I never went to bed with a dirty dish in my sink,” she said. Nicklaus added, “I did a lot of canning too, but when Floyd died, I retired from canning. I used to love seeing all of my canned goods.” Toward the end of her farming career, she also worked at the middle school cafeteria for three years. “I enjoyed chatting with the kids at the school,” she said. After they retired the couple took annual vacations to Florida together. Nicklaus also went on a week-long mission trip to Oklahoma with a friend from church. It was the ﬁrst time she had traveled without Floyd, but thoroughly enjoyed the good they were able to do for the children in the area. “I’ve enjoyed my life out on the farm. In my 93 years I’ve sure learned a lot,” she said. And though she no longer has the responsibilities she once did, she continues to enjoy her time outside, working in her ﬂower beds and keeping her bird feeders full.

Ruhl noted she has had students come from Winamac, Rochester and other communities in Fulton County and beyond. No advance reservations are required to attend a program. Ruhl said she is always ready for the students, regardless of how many show up, saying “whoever walks in the door” is welcome. The activities she prepares for the hourlong program are hands-on, with each student actively participating in the lesson. Occasionally, she will give a demonstration to the group, but most of the session is spent with the kids doing the actual work. “The program is a good time to foster social skills with other

kids that some of these students don’t get on a regular basis,” said Ruhl. “They often start out shy, staying within their family unit. Eventually they walk around and interact with other students. Sometimes I try to put them in a group with students outside of their family.” So far in 2022, Ruhl’s themed programs have included “Arctic Adventure” and “Simple Machines.” Remaining program themes for the spring include “Wild About Weather” March 16; “Wild About Weather 2” April 20; and “Endangered Animals” May 18. The time together also provides parents with additional resources. Often they have a chance to interact with other home schooling parents to share ideas and

James “Jimmy” Edward Nash, 72, Mentone, passed away peacefully at 5:34 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022, at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne. Jimmy was born Oct. 1, 1949, in Elizabeth City, N.C. He was the son of James Earl and Willie Mae (Futrell) Nash of Churchland, Va. They pre- -$0(6 (':$5' ceded him in death. 1$6+ Jimmy was the former owner of J.E. Nash and Son Logging Company, member of the Ivor, Va., Town Council, Ivor Fire Department and Ivor Rescue Squad, where he served for many years. In his earlier years, he enjoyed deep sea fishing adventures with friends. In his later years, he drove for Metal Span Trucking of Texas and retired from Metzger Trucking Company, Silver Lake. Jimmy loved driving his Peterbilt and visiting sights across the country. He is survived by his wife, Priscilla Conley Nash, Mentone; daughters, Amy Howell (Chris), Ivor, Va., and Catherine Vick (Andrew), Ivor, Va.; stepchildren, Autumn Chaja, Mentone, Lee Redinger (Heather), Rochester, and Cassandra Knight, Mentone; grandchildren, Rachel Jones (Jordan), Ashton Howell, Nash Howell (McKenzie), Austin Vick, Ryann Boomer (Benjamin) and Aaron Vick; stepgrandchildren, Dakota Briney (fiancée Megan), Kia Gunnels (Jesse) and Wyett and Stormy Knight; great-grandchildren, Kelsie, Kohen and Kennan; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Kinley, Kohen, Sophina, Olivia, Carter Allen and Jesse Lee. Friends visited from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester. A time of visitation in Virginia was held from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, at Parr Funeral Home, 3515 Robs Drive, Suffolk, Va. Pamela K. Fansler, 65, Rochester, passed away at 4:41 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2022, at her residence. She was born Nov. 23, 1956, in Marion, Ohio, the daughter of Donald and Barbara (McIntire) Meddles. On Feb. 9, 1984, in Peru, she married Tony Lynn Fansler; he survives. Pam was a U.S. Air Force veteran and had been 3$0(/$ . a homemaker raising her four children. She attended )$16/(5 Rochester Church of God. She enjoyed flowers, making silk arrangements for family, friends and decorating the church. She also enjoyed making jewelry with beads, especially making bracelets and necklaces, and giving them away to family and friends. Survivors include her husband, Tony Lynn Fansler, Rochester; children, Jay Michael (Amy) Rainey, Goshen, Jeremy (Roberta) Fansler, Summerfield, Fla., Rene Lazarrus, California, and Jasmyn Marrale, Brooklynn, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, John Meddles, Marion, Ohio; sisters, Debbie Kuhn, Columbus, Ohio, and Carol Dimoff, Columbus, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. She was born April 11, 1925, in Monongalia County, W.Va., the daughter of Walter Simon and Dorothy (Radcliffe) Iser. On Dec. 7, 1962, in Logan, Ohio, she married Franklin E. Milliser. He preced$*1(6 , ed her in death July 4, 1986. 0,//,6(5 Early in Agnes’ life, she had worked in the coal mines of West Virginia and during World War II worked in the local factory as “Rosie the Riveter” making supplies to help the war effort. She, along with her husband, owned and operated an upholstery shop in Leiters Ford for many years. Later in life, she worked as a caregiver. She had been a member of the Jehovah’s Witness and the Pentecostal Church. She enjoyed vacationing, making pepperoni buns, cooking, gardening and caring for her family, especially all of her grandchildren. Survivors include her children, Edward (Laurie) Maley, Roseburg, Ore., Dan (Cheryl) Felda, Monterey, and Kimberly Milliser, Monterey; nine grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by ﬁve brothers; four sisters; and her great-grandson, Cody Hatter. Bernard James Junge, 78, Rochester, passed away Monday, Feb. 21, 2022, at his residence. Bernard was born Nov. 5, 1943, to Emil and Martha Junge, and was baptized Nov. 14, 1943. He grew up in the small town of Holgate, Ohio, with four brothers and one sister. Upon graduation from Holgate High School in 1961, Bernie served four %(51$5' years in the Submarine Service of the U.S. Navy on -$0(6 -81*( the USS ODAX. After his honorable discharge, Bernie returned to Ohio and attended the University of Toledo, earning a degree in business. He held several controller and general manager positions with companies that had businesses in multiple states, including Johns Mansville, Redman Industries, HNP and General Woodworker. Following the sale of General Woodworker in Plymouth, Bernie remained active in the business community and served as a business broker, facilitating the sale of area companies. His last management position was as a partner in ElectriTec in Angola. For the past 40 years, Bernie cultivated the herb, ginseng. While traveling in Wisconsin for business, he first inquired about the herb and discovered it would do well on is 186-acre farm in Indiana. Ginseng is highly prized in the Chinese culture and is found in many health-related products sold in the United States. Bernie was regularly active in the U.S. Submarine Veterans Inc. Silversides Base as the base commander of the Indiana District. He was instrumental in procuring a plaque that is now displayed in the American Legion in North Webster, in honor of the 53 submarines and 3,500 service members lost during World War II. Among those lost were four Medal of Honor recipients. No matter where Bernie lived, he was a faithful church member and usually sang in the choir and was always willing to teach Sunday school and serve on various boards and committees. When he settled in Rochester, he was able to rekindle his interest in horses and standardbred harness racing. With his friend, Jack Kieninger, he enjoyed caring for and racing horses at Hoosier Park in Anderson. He was a member of the U.S. Trotters Association. Bernie loved music and dancing and acquired the nickname “BJ the DJ” in high school as he spun the records for the high school dances. Since there were no opportunities for adults to gather and dance in Rochester, he started a monthly dance night for Rochester and area community members but was shut down due to the COVID pandemic. Bernie was active in his community, serving on the United Way board, was president of the Rotary Club in Plymouth and, most recently, the Rotary Club of Rochester. He was past vice-chairman of the board of trustees of Ancilla College in Donaldson. Bernie was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers, Raymond Junge and Walter Junge. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Lisa (Brian) Allen of Plymouth; Troy Junge and Chad Junge of Huntersville, N.C.; grandsons, Trent Allen of Seattle, Wash., and Damon Allen of Plymouth; siblings, Everett Junge of Edina, Minn., Elmer (Rosalyn) Junge of Napoleon, Ohio, and Florence (Bernie) Dielman of Napoleon, Ohio; first wife, Shirley Damman Junge of Plymouth; and significant other, Karen Kingsley of New Buffalo, Mich. College Goal Sunday this weekend in Logansport Financial aid professionals will be volunteering at Ivy Tech Community College’s Logansport location and 39 other sites in Indiana for College Goal Sunday, an event designed to help collegebound students and their families open the door to financial aid. The event is set for 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, on the campus at 1 Ivy Tech Way in Logansport. Interpreters will be available to provide translations for Spanish-speaking participants. Indiana University Kokomo is also serving as a College Goal Sunday site on its campus at 2300 S. Washington St., Kokomo. The free program assists Indiana students in filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA form is required for students to be considered for federal and state grants, scholarships and student loans at most colleges, universities and vocational/technical schools nationwide. The FAFSA must be filed by April 15 for the student to be eligible for Indiana financial aid. “Last year, Indiana high school graduates missed out on $65 million in Pell Grants by not filing the FAFSA,” said Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers. “If you are considering education beyond high school, filing the FAFSA is the best way to ensure you are receiving available financial aid. College Goal Sunday offers one-onone assistance from financial aid experts to students and families to ensure their FAFSA is accurately completed.” College Goal Sunday is valuable to families who may perceive this required form to be too complicated and time-consuming to complete. In less than one afternoon at a College Goal Sunday event, students and their families can get free help and file the form online. Students should attend College Goal Sunday with their parent(s) or guardian(s) who should bring completed 2020 IRS 1040 tax returns, W-2 Forms and other 2020 income and benefits information. If Christ is preeminent in our lives, then we will be able to get along with others for his glory. If there are differences, the peace of God will rule in our hearts as we feed on the word and worship Christ. Christian fellowship in the local church cannot be legislated by a constitution, although constitutions are useful; true fellowship must come from within, from the hearts of the believers. If a believer is out of fellowship with another believer, it is because one or both of them have gotten out of fellowship with God. “Do all in the name of Christ!” What blessings would come to our homes if each member of the family said, “I will live each day to please Christ and make him preeminent in all things.” There would be less selﬁshness and more love; less impatience and more tenderness; less wasting of money on foolish things and more living for the things that matter most. The weather didn’t turn out like we had planned, but the amount of support we received from the community was beyond belief. We would like to give a special thanks to the Rochester Optimist

Compassionate Health Center has announced the receipt of a $15,000 check as part of the American Rescue Plan Grant for Fulton County. Fulton County Council Member Jim Showley recently stopped by the clinic to present a check to Executive Director Mary Kay. According to Kay, the majority of the funds will be utilized to provide continuous glucose monitoring systems for their diabetic patients. Abbott Freestyle Libre systems provide a way to continually monitor the patient’s glucose levels without the pain of a ﬁnger stick. High and low alarms can be programed to alert the patient of dangerous glucose levels. In addition, the data from these sensors can be monitored by their provider allowing them to understand how the patient reacts to food, exer-

cise and treatment, and allows the provider to adjust medication as needed. It also gives the provider the complete picture of the diabetic patient, not just a moment in time. Kay noted diabetes is the most common diagnosis for their clinic patients along with hypertension. These monitors — a small sensor worn on the back of the arm — are costly, and without these funds the clinic wouldn’t be able to offer this type of diabetic management. They are very grateful for this support. “We started this new program in January with three of our patients and they are so excited to learn more about their disease,” said Kay. “Diabetic patients of the clinic can discuss this new program at their next visit. We look forward to providing the best care possible for our diabetic patients.”

Purkeys celebrate 65 years of marriage

Rev. Ronald and Sarah (Sibert) Purkey celebrated 65 years of marriage. They live at 3123 Manitou Park Road in Rochester. They were married Saturday, Feb. 16, 1957, at the First Baptist Church in Hammond while Ronald Purkey was serving in the U.S. Army. The ceremony was ofﬁciated by the church pastor, Dr.

Owen L. Miller. After their marriage the Purkeys did almost everything together. They attended college together. He went to college ﬁrst, but she took classes too. Later Sarah Purkey attended college, and Ronald Purkey would go with her and study in the college library while she attended

First, from nursing school as a registered nurse, and later she graduated with a college degree in management. The Purkeys said those days were some of the best days of their lives. He is a retired Baptist minister. In more than 50 years of ministry, they served nine churches in six states: Tennessee, New Mexico, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. She served as a nurse for more than 50 years. In Indiana she was employed at Woodlawn Hospital as an ICU nurse in Rochester, in Winamac she served as the assistant director of nursing at Pulaski Memorial Hospital, and later as an ICU nurse at Memorial Hospital in Logansport. In 1995 they were the co-founders of Hope Hospice in Rochester, and served there for nearly 20 years. Sarah Purkey is the daughter of the late Porter and Laura Sibert of Rochester. He is the son of the late Clabe and Lefa Purkey of Hammond. The couple have two children, Ronald Purkey Jr. and Daniel (Brenda) Purkey in Rochester; three grandchildren Austin (Amy) Purkey, Kenny (Daisy) Purkey, and Laura Purkey; and two great-grandchildren Will and Emerson Purkey. They celebrated with several friends and family members by visiting with them in the Purkeys home. Many photographs of the couple were taken.

Lewis to seek re-election as county commissioner B r y a n Lewis announced last Tuesday he will seek reelection for the ofﬁce of Fulton County commissioner. “I am proud to serve the %5<$1 /(:,6 citizens of Fulton County as your commissioner, but I know there is more work to be done,” said Lewis. “I am looking forward to the challenges and opportunities the next four years will bring, and I remain dedicated to making Fulton County the best it can be.” During his time in ofﬁce, Lewis has been involved in several key initiatives, including: • Protecting property owners’ rights from big wind. • Securing grant money and utilizing ARPA money to stretch the county’s dollars further. • Working directly with the county highway department to secure Community Crossings Matching grant funds. Through this grant, the county has been able to secure more than $4 million in state funding to upgrade and improve Fulton County roads since the program’s inception in 2016.

• Working with Fulton County H.O,P.E. to help in-need Fulton County citizens get back on their feet. More information on Fulton County H.O.P.E. can be found at www.fchope.org. As he looks forward, Lewis said his priorities continue to center around improving quality-of-life for Fulton County residents. If reelected, his goals for the next term include: • Working with county entities to create a positive working relationship for its citizens. • Utilizing his role as a Fulton Economic Development Corporation board member to enhance county economic development. • Collaborating with the area plan board to update county ordinances to further protect property owners’ rights related to wind and solar farms. In addition to serving on the board of directors for FEDCO, Lewis also serves on the Fulton County Solid Waste board and the Fulton County Drainage board. “We are a small community, and we need to work together to accomplish great things for the citizens of our county,” said Lewis. In addition to his role as commissioner, Lewis, along with his wife Julie, own and run Lewis Construction, a local home builder since 1994.
