While numbers have dramatically increased since the beginning of the pandemic, home schooling is not a new concept. According to a report from the Bellwether Education Partners commissioned by the Walton Family Foundation, nearly 2.6 million students have switched from traditional learning to home schooling since 2020, almost doubling the number of children learning outside of the traditional system. Recognizing this trend, Kewanna Library Director Charles Rude and local education proponent Linda Ruhl set out to assist area families who have opted to teach their kids at home. Two years ago, the church began offering the “Homeschoolers @ the Library” program, which meets at 2 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month, with the exceptions of June and July. Ruhl, a retired educator, puts together a unique science program for the students each week. “Each month we study a different science topic,” said Ruhl. “We use hands-on experiences to learn science in a fun way. Home school programs at the library allow students to experience concepts first-hand.” Attendance varies from month-to-month, but often times families bring other families or friends.
