By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Deanna Love was interested in her now husband Mike Love when they both attended Akron High School.

“She wanted to date me in high school, and I never knew about it,” said Mike. “She told her friends not to tell me that she liked me.”

Despite that, the couple from Akron got together and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in January.

It was Mike’s brother-in-law who ended up helping the two connect after high school.

Both Mike and Deanna went to the Akron Church of God, with Deanna and Mike’s brother-inlaw both being involved with the church’s bus ministry.

thing to me first, and I said, ‘Well, he’s got to ask me out for a date,’” said Deanna. “And then I got a phone call shortly after that.”

Their first date was on St. Patrick’s Day 1973, but their location for it changed due to the weather.

“We went to my brother-in-law and my sister’s house because we were going to go to Fort Wayne, (but) there was a blizzard,” said Mike.

Around August 1973, Mike asked Deanna to marry him.

The Rev. Ray Bradway married them on Jan. 26, 1974, at the Akron Church of God. At the ceremony, Mike sang the Hawaiian wedding song. Fittingly, Mike and Deanna then honeymooned on Oahu.

The couple has spent all of their marriage living in Akron.

Mike retired from Sonoco Prod-

ucts in Akron after 45 years, and Deanna had various public service jobs.

The two own and operate EarlLove Funeral Home in Akron.

Mike and Deanna have two sons, Eric and Brian, and two grandchildren, Eli and Libby.

The two noted they believe it’s their Christian faith and the support of good family members which has kept them together all these years.

Mike said he admired his wife’s persistence.

“She’s a lot like her dad. When any obstacle comes her way, she figures out a way to solve it,” he said.

Deanna said she appreciated her husband’s musical talents of singing and playing guitar.

As for marriage advice to other couples, Deanna said she’d tell

them to “have Christ in their life and have common things that (they) like to do.”

“We both played tennis a lot when we were dating,” said Mike.

Deanna noted the two both enjoyed sports and did other activities like bowling when they dated.

She encourages other couples “just (to do) things together.”

“A lot of people are like ships.

They go their own way, but we do everything together,” said Deanna.

For couples who are struggling with their marriages, Deanna would advise them to attend counseling and get “involved in church.”

“I would say work things out and don’t ever go to bed mad,” said Mike.

Both vouched communication in marriage is important.

Rochester Fire Department gains first female firefighter, first married couple

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer The Rochester Fire Department has its first female firefighter and first married couple serving together.

Santanna Shook took the first distinction when she joined the RFD as a volunteer in October. Her husband, Steven, became a volunteer at the same time, making them the first couple within the ranks.

The Shooks, originally from Plymouth, are following in the footsteps of their family members by serving on the fire department.

Santanna’s father was a volunteer fireman for the Wakarusa Fire Department for 20 years.

“His having that background, you always have that daughter looks up to their dad kind of thing,” said Santanna of herself.

Steven’s uncle served as a volunteer with the Plymouth Fire Department.

Santanna said the two opted to join the RFD after Roches-

ter’s assistant fire chief stopped by the couple’s main workplace, Modern Materials in Rochester.

“It comes down to being able to be that role model for the younger generation,” added Santanna of why she and Steven joined. “We have kids at home, so doing something that others can look up to you for, but then also having that sense of we’re helping save somebody’s loved one or family member, and it’s just kind of that giving back feel.”

As volunteer firefighters, the Shooks are on call 24/7.

“Anytime the radios go off, if we are available to come up to the station, we do,” said Santanna.

She said the two will stay at the station overnight when they can.

“We’ve gained a lot of relationships, and we’ve made new friends just being on the department for a short period of time,” said Santanna.

She noted fully understanding the roles of firefighters by being on the RFD has been a positive for her.

to be able to have the confidence in yourself for one to put yourself in a situation that can be very scary, so you have to be able to control your emotions and know (why) you’re doing this.”

“For a volunteer, it’s not about the money,” said Santanna. “It’s more of the aspect of you’re helping your community, you’re going in and you’re saving what needs to be saved.

I guess it’s more having the heart versus anything.”

“I’ve had a lot of jobs. I think it’s the coolest job I’ve ever done I mean as far as looking at the standpoint of drop everything that you’re doing in your real life and come here and get geared up and run into a situation,” said Steven.

Training together for the department is natural for the two as the couple also works together at Modern Materials and works out together.

“We are both body builders,” said Santanna.

“It comes to, we always have that team aspect,” she said.

“When he’s having a bad day, I’m there to lift him up or vice versa.”

Steven added the two look out for each other when they are on scene together.

Santanna said she’d encourage others to become firefighters to help others.

“If it wasn’t for us when someone’s having a bad day, I mean the outcome is going to be that much worse if we don’t have the strong-minded individuals to be able to come and do the same things that we’re doing,” she said.

Santanna said she was happy to visit local elementary schools to talk about fire safety in fall 2023.

“Of course, I wanted to attend because being the only female firefighter on the department I want all of the other girls, small or teenage to know that if I can do it, anyone can do it,” she said. “So to see their reaction of, she’s a female and she’s a firefighter, it’s those little things.”

“When you have that one that shows up and then you can be that inspiration that might stick ... than that little girl ... down the road, she may become a firefighter,” said Santanna.

This undoubtedly disturbed them all, for they looked to Peter as their leader. Jesus himself had revealed his own inward burden (John 13:21), although certainly his troubled spirit was in no way like their troubled hearts.

In this chapter, Jesus Christ sought to comfort the Twelve Apostles and quiet their troubled hearts. He gave them reasons why he had to leave them and go to the father.

First, To Prepare a Place for Them (John 14:1-6). Christ speaks of heaven as a real place,

home where the Father dwells.

“Mansions” in the Gk. is actually “abiding places,” speaking of the permanency of our heavenly home.

Heaven is a prepared place for prepared people. Christ “the Carpenter” (Mark 6:3) is building a heavenly home for all who have trusted him. And he will return to receive his own to himself.

The Apostle Paul later amplified this promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. “Absent from the body, present with the Lord.”

Had Christ remained on earth, he could not have prepared the heavenly home for his own.

How can sinners ever hope to get to heaven? Through Jesus Christ.

Read Luke 15:11-24, the story of the Prodigal Son, in connection with John 14:6. Like the sinner, the boy was lost (Luke 15:24), ignorant (Luke 15:17—“came to himself”), and dead (Luke 15:24).

But he came to the father! (Luke 15:20) He was lost, but Christ is the way; he was ignorant, but Christ is the truth; and he was dead (spiritually), but Christ is the life! And he arrived at the fa-

Philip seemed to have trouble with his eyes: he wanted to see.

Almost his first words in John 1:46 are, “Come and see!” He saw the great crowd in John 6 and decided that Christ could not feed them (John 6:7).

The Greeks who came to Philip said, “We would see Jesus” (John 12:21). Jesus made it clear that seeing him is seeing the father.

“From now on you know him,” He promises in verse 7 (NKJV). It is by faith that we see God the Father as we come to know Christ the Son better.

“Jesus saith unto him: Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, show us the Father?” (John 14:9).

The God of the Bible is a Trinity: the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. They are three in one.

Filing ends for Fulton County 2024 primary election

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Filing has ended for the 2024 primary election in Fulton County, which will be Tuesday, May 7.

There will be two main contested races for it: Fulton County Council at-large and Fulton County auditor.

Four candidates have filed as Republicans for the three open council seats: Barry Baldwin, Patricia Geier, Matthew Finke and Steve Fishburn.

Two Republicans have filed for auditor: Lorie Hurst and Kathy Adamson.

M a r y Lovina Polen, 94, died on W e d n e s d a y, Feb. 7, 2024.

She was born on July 8, 1929. On Aug. 19, 1946, she was married William Napoleon Polen; MARY L. POLEN who preceded her in death on Aug. 15, 1977.

She is survived by her daughters, Diana, Darlene (Jay) Thompson, and Miriam (Travis Rose) Van Sickle; and son-in-law Gary Arnett; 10 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roland and Nedra (Patterson) Dilts; and daughter Nancy.

A celebration of life service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, in Gundrum Funeral Home, Logansport, with Pastor Tom Robbins officiating.

Interment was held in Mount Hope Cemetery, Logansport.

Marlene May Fox

Marlene May Fox, 68, Winamac, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024, in Northwest Health Hospital, LaPorte.

She was born on March 30, 1955. On MARLEME MAY FOX Sept. 18, 2004, she married Fran Fox; who survives.

Additional survivors are six sons, Brandon Noyer, Travis Noyer, and Cody Fox, all of Winamac, Darrell Fox, Matt (Andrea) Fox, and Andrew Fox, both of Pulaski; three daughters, Angie (Jay) Thompson, Ora, Monica (Jason) Pothoff, Winamac, and Caroline (Adam) Coonrod, Buffalo; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; five sisters-in-law, Jackie Terry, Sandy Terry, Teri (Ron) TerryShidler, Nancy (Dave) Hitchens, and Marian (Tony) Reinhold; brotherin-law, Paul (Sue) Fox; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald M. “Red” and Myrna L. (Poss) Terry; in-laws, Joe and Noan Fox; son, Jason Fox; one granddaughter; one sister, Linnea Lloyd; four brothers, Darrel Terry, David Terry, Donald Terry, Dwayne Terry; three sisters-in-law, Shorty Terry, Della Terry, and Bev Terry; and infant brother-in-law, Harold Fox. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. EST Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac, with Pastor Butch Wildermuth officiating.

Interment was held in Mt. ZionFranklin Twp. Cemetery, Winamac.

Ocelia Marie BaileyConklin, 100, Rochester, died at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5, 2024, in her residence.

She was born on Feb. 6, 1923. On June 10, 1939, she married Carl OCELIA M. Hostetler; BAILEYwho preceded CONKLIN her in death on Sept. 10, 1972. On June 21, 1975, she married Ralph F. Bailey; who preceded her death on Jan. 18, 1998. On Aug. 23, 2003, she married LeRoy Conklin; who preceded her in death on March 2, 2008.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews; and a goddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ocel and Cecile Smith Emigh; sister, Dorothy Huber; brother, Eugene Emigh; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12, in Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester.

G e o r g e “Tim” Paris, 81, Warsaw, died at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024, in Miller’s Merry Manor.

He was born on Dec. 20, 1942. On July 30, 1966, he married GEORGE “TIM” Patricia “PatPARIS ti” Ruberg; who preceded him in death on Dec. 19, 2022.

He is survived by three sons, Randy (Carmen) Paris, Winona Lake, Chris Paris, Carmel, and Jason (Jessica) Paris, Greencastle, Pa; seven grandchildren; and two brothers, John “Mick” (Sue) Paris, Stevensville, Mich., and Dave Paris, Wolcottville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marjorie (Storer) and George Philip Paris; daughter-inlaw, Dawn Paris; and brother, Bill Paris.

A celebration of life service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, in Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, with Pastor Butch Troke officiating.

Gearldine Brower, 87, Macy, died Friday, Feb. 2, in Blair Ridge Health Campus.

She was born Jan. 26, 1937. On June 1, 1958, she married Larry Brower; who GEARLDINE survives.

HONORED FOR SAVING A LIFE — Several Rochester firefighters, Fulton County dispatchers and Lutheran EMS medics were recognized by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security for saving the life of Rochester resident, Todd Martin, in November 2023 after he had a heart issue.

Holcomb directs Indiana National Guard to support Texas border security mission Gov. Eric J. Holcomb has announced effective immediately he is deploying the Indiana National Guard to support the ongoing border security mission in Texas.

Holcomb joined 13 other governors at the U.S. and Mexico border in Texas recently to receive a detailed briefing from the front lines.

“Federal negligence enforcing immigration law and the failure to secure our country’s border jeopardizes national and economic security, affecting every state, including Indiana,” Holcomb said. “We’ve worked too hard in Indiana attacking the drug epidemic for more Hoosier lives to be put at risk by a constant supply of killer drugs

spilled over an open U.S. border.

The only way to resolve this is to stop the historically high flow of illegal immigrants crossing the border.”

Following the recent direct request from Gov. Greg Abbott, Holcomb is sending 50 Hoosier Guardsmen to the southern border to support the Texas National Guard on its security

mission. These soldiers will begin mobilizing for the mission immediately and will arrive in Texas in mid-March.

The soldiers being deployed will spend one week at Camp Atterbury for training on the operations of the mission and will then deploy to Texas for 10 months.

“Whatever the mission — whether it’s supporting a Hoosier community in the face of natural disaster, standing with our allies or against our adversaries overseas, or protecting the border — the soldiers and airmen of the Indiana National Guard are uniquely trained, equipped and capable of mobilizing whenever and wherever we’re called,” said Major General Dale Lyles, the adjutant general of the Indiana National Guard. “We stand ready to support the Texas National Guard in securing the southern border.”

The Indiana National Guard has a long history of supporting the mission to secure the south-

ern border. From October 2020 to October 2023, 300 Indiana Guardsmen and women have served various federal missions at the southern border.

The Indiana National Guard is comprised of thousands of soldiers and airmen, Army National Guard armories and units across the state, training facilities at Camp Atterbury and Muscatatuck Urban Training Center and Air National Guard wings in Fort Wayne and Terre Haute.

MRI, and some implants are safe only under certain conditions. We want to place patient safety at the top of the list, starting with identifying what is inside your body.

After reviewing the screening form, a technologist will take the patient to get prepared for the exam. Not all clothing is compatible with an MRI scanner, so patients change into a gown prior to the MRI. Any clothing with metal on it or in it has the potential to harm a patient and burn them. Certain athletic wear may have copper or silver embedded in the threads, which can heat up during the MRI and burn a patient.

After the patient has changed into the appropriate gown for their exam, they will go back to MRI with a technologist. For patients who may have issues walking, an MRI safe wheelchair is provided for use during the MRI. The MRI may pull any metal objects, such as wheelchairs, canes, or walkers, into the scanner, which can harm the patient, the scanner, and the technologist performing the exam. To avoid this, we will always use our MRI safe wheelchair for those who need it; however, ensuring safety continues even when we get patients in the scan room.

Every patient is given an alarm button during the exam. If a patient needs to stop an exam or has any questions, they only need to squeeze it, and the technologist will stop the exam and address their concerns. Every patient is monitored throughout the exam, from the moment they check in until the moment they leave.

Valley FFA leaders: Kids gain skills through participating in FFA

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer FFA allows students to become “well-rounded students” said Hope Slagle.

Slagle and fellow Tippecanoe Valley High School agriculture teacher Mike Jones oversee around 74 students in FFA at the school.

Those kids participate in multiple events tied to various agricultural categories through FFA teams.

Over the last year, Valley FFA had the following teams: horticulture, forestry, soils, livestock skillathon, entomology, chapter meeting contest, welding, regular livestock, dairy, poultry, floriculture and district leadership contest.

Slagle noted Valley’s dairy judging team made it to nationals last year in Wisconsin.

Valley, like other schools around the area, has plenty of activities planned for FFA Week, which runs Saturday, Feb. 17, through Saturday, Feb. 24.

Valley is starting out its week with FFA Sunday Feb. 18.

Students may attend church as a group followed by going to a restaurant and doing “a fun activity,” said Jones.

“Monday (Feb. 19) is a cornhole tournament and a pasta night,” he said.

“Tuesday (Feb. 20) our juniors and seniors ... present to second graders (at Mentone and Akron elementary schools),” said Slagle.

“That evening is the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District annual banquet, which we have kids going there to get their soils judging awards,” said Jones.

Valley’s FFA chapter will have its Community Appreciation Supper from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, at TVHS. The public is welcome to eat for a freewill donation and stay for the FFA worker auction following the supper.

On Friday, Feb. 23, kids may drive tractors to school and have breakfast there.

Slagle will also take girls to the agricultural women’s conference in Fort Wayne during FFA Week.

Slagle and Jones vouched FFA is still vital to kids even as fewer people work in agriculture in the U.S. overall.

“FFA is really hitting on helping develop well-rounded students, in both the technical skills necessary for ag careers, but also the leadership qualities to be successful and lead in those industries,” said Slagle.

Jones noted how the agricultural industry has evolved and some of the projects kids are doing at Valley as a result.

“My first hour is precision technology and drones,” said Jones. “You look at some of the things that our kids are doing for district leadership, we’ve got kids extracting DNA from strawberries.”

Rochester chapter has a busy week planned for FFA Week

By LORI CARR Staff Writer FFA members throughout out the state, and across the country, celebrate National FFA week each year.

FFA is a youth organization that makes a positive difference in lives of students.

Rochester High School FFA officers this year are: President Keegan Reinhold, senior; Vice President Emily Vigar, junior; Reporter Brooke Nelson, senior; Treasurer Tyler Reese, junior; and Sentinel Wesley Lawson, junior.

This year, FFA Week at RHS will be Feb. 17-24. There are several activities planned throughout the week.

The annual ski trip will be held on Monday. This year, members will travel to Bittersweet Ski Resort in Ostego, Mich., where they can partake in skiing and snowboarding.

Tuesday will include the battle of the trucks, in which students will take pictures of their trucks and turn them in. The pictures will fall into a certain category such as: dirtiest, cleanest, nicest, oldest, and newest. The student body will then vote for the best one for each category. The students who win those categories will receive back double their entry fee.

On Wednesday, FFA members participate in the annual tractor drive-in.

“We have a parade and pull in front of the school so students are able to see all of the tractors,” stated Vigar.

“The whole chapter plays a main key role in making FFA Week work.”

There will be cattle, goats, horses, and pigs this year for the students to interact with.

The annual FFA auction will be held March 23.

“We allow consignments to be taken for the annual auction Wednesday to Friday,” according to Emma Bays.

“The auction is then held on Saturday.”

There are roughly 50 to 60 FFA members this year.

According to Reese, “It is roughly the same number as last year.”

Students will begin the week with a roller skating party that will be held at Logansport Skate World. They will also be preparing set-up for a petting zoo that will be held Tuesday.

“The petting zoo is open to the public and for all grade levels,” stated Logan.

Some of the farm animals will include: a donkey, dairy and beef cows, sheep, goats, and a mini horse.

A staff appreciation breakfast will be held Wednesday and the Caston bus drivers are also included in this event.

“The menu will consist of pancakes and sausage links,” according to Logan.

Thursday will be a very busy but productive day at CHS. The tractor drive-in is something the students look forward to and all members are welcome to drive them to school.

“In the past, it was always held on Friday but this year we decided to hold it on Thursday,” according to Logan. “This allows members to be at the school by 7:30 a.m. to start help-

ing out.”

At lunch time, there will be a cornhole tournament and then preparations will begin for the annual hog roast.

“The hog roast is a long-standing tradition at CHS. According to Ag teacher Nick Korniac. “Local farmers donate pigs for the hog roast and this year we will be roasting five.

We will season the hogs and start the roasting process usually between 4:30-5 p.m. Thursday evening.”

Students will wrap up FFA Week Friday with the hog roast. It will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, in the CHS ag shop. Dine in or carry-out will be available. There are typically 400-500 people that come through the carry-out line.

“Businesses take advantage of the carry-out service CHS offers,” according to Logan. “They usually designate one person for pickup and it really has drawn the people in. We form two lines to help with the orders and it really keeps things running smoothly,” stated Logan. “FFA week is fun but I enjoy the hog roast and seeing everyone from the community,” she added.

The hog roast will accept free-will donations.

North Miami FFA members: FFA about ‘fun, community’

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer FFA allows its members to experience “fun” and “community,” according to FFA members at North Miami High School.

Several sophomores from the school recently shared why they joined FFA, ahead of National FFA Week, which is Saturday, Feb. 17, through Saturday, Feb. 24.

Joannah Wildermuth said she’s in FFA “because it’s super fun.”

“I really love agriculture, she added. “It’s a great time to bond with friends and make new (ones).”

Hannah Early said she likes FFA due to “going on all the trips and making memories with friends and ... getting to compete and learn more about agriculture.”

Their classmate, Karter Floor, added he likes the organization because “I just like the community ... (and) going on all the trips and meeting new people.”

North Miami FFA Leader Jim Wildermuth noted kids can learn “life skills” through FFA. “It doesn’t matter if they’re going into ag, they’ll transition into any job opportunity I think,” he said, mentioning skills, like public speaking, students get via FFA. “There’s a lot of self growth ... and just the opportunities for developing leadership skills,” Jim added.

He said he joined FFA when he was a student for “the opportunity to improve (himself).”

Around 64 kids participate in North Miami’s FFA. They compete in the following events: livestock skillathon, soils, forestry, parliamentary procedure, dairy, poultry, equine, welding and small engines.

Wildermuth noted there will be “three soil teams that will be going to the nationals in May.” “This is the first year we’ve done welding, they’re going to be at state ... so that’s pretty exciting to have a startup team make it, and then our freshmen parliament team is preparing for state right now,” he added.

Current North Miami FFA leadership includes: President Kacie Deardorff, Vice President Alison Smith, Treasurer Calie France, Secretary Riley Kling, Reporter Jesus Santana and Sentinel Jordan Weaver.

The chapter has planned various events during FFA Week.

“On Sunday, (Feb. 18) ... anybody that wants will go to church as a group,” said Wildermuth. “Then after church, we’ll meet up with any other kids, and we’ll do lunch and ... a fun activity.”

“Then Monday (Feb. 19) we’re going to do a ski trip as long as the ski slopes in Michigan are open,” he said.

On Tuesday, Feb. 20, there will be an ugly truck contest and cornhole tournament.

On Wednesday, Feb. 21, there will be pedal tractor races and an Ag Olympics with Maconaquah High School.

“We’ll do the hay bale throw and stuff like that,” said Wildermuth.

A milk chug contest is planned for Thursday, Feb. 22, and a carry-in lunch is Friday, Feb. 23, for “staff or faculty appreciation,” he said.

Recent data leak, updates on Fulton County, Rochester addressed during Legislative Breakfast

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Updates on Fulton County and Rochester and a recent data leak were addressed during the second Fulton County Legislative Breakfast.

The breakfast, put on by the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce and Fulton County Farm Bureau, was at the Fulton County Public Library’s Rochester branch Saturday, Feb. 10.

Unlike the last breakfast in January and the next planned in March, local instead of state leaders spoke. They included Rochester Mayor Trent Odell and Fulton County Commissioners Bryan Lewis, Rick Ranstead and David Sommers.

Before talking about general updates on the area, Lewis, who serves as the commissioners’ president, referenced the data leak.

Through it, the Fulton County auditor’s office mistakenly published the last four digits of county employees’ Social Security numbers as part of a legal notice in a local newspaper.

“We have spoken with our insurance company, and I have spoken with an attorney who was assigned to us, to our insurance company,” said Lewis. “We will be offering credit monitoring for the county employees.”

“It’s a disappointing thing it happened,” he added. “The three of us (commissioners) have spent countless hours trying to figure

out what can be done, what happened.”

Lewis noted state leaders had told him that state law doesn’t prohibit the publishing of employees’ Social Security numbers.

“So that’s something that I know Rick, David and I are pursuing to try to force legislators to look at some change in some law,” Lewis added.

County, City Plans Lewis then pivoted to speak about future plans for the area.

“I think the future is getting brighter for our community,” he said.

He referenced Rochester Community Schools working to get a child care grant. Lewis also said he met with Odell and Fulton County Economic Development

“It’s nice and reassuring to know that there’s a positive outlook coming,” he said. “With the city and county being able to work together, it opens up opportunities communitywide for us.”

Sommers spoke next, referencing how he works with the Fulton County Emergency Management Agency and 911 Communications as a commissioner.

He said EMA and 911 Communications Director Gail Karas is working with RCS and the Caston School Corp. on safety planning.

Sommers also said the Rochester Telephone Co. should be done laying fiber for broadband throughout the whole county by the end of the year.

Ranstead spoke next. Referring to Fulton County Veterans Service Officer Ric Fouts who was in attendance, Ranstead noted the service office recently got a new van to transport veterans to medical appointments.

Ranstead gave an update on the county working on a new contract with Lutheran EMS to provide ambulance services.

es in the county, including bringing one back to Akron. Ranstead said he hoped final negotiations would be completed around March 1.

Odell was the last to speak, hitting on some things he touched on during his State of the City address in January.

He briefly referenced the Rochester water rate hikes which were going into effect to help pay for rising utility maintenance costs.

The Rochester City Council approved them last year, with the rates to go up over three phases.

He also said the city was working to start treating leachate, or water collected from Republic Services County Line Landfill, again. If it’s able to, that will generate additional revenue for Rochester.

Odell said the city hoped to install a code enforcement officer to oversee upkeep of properties in Rochester.

The final Legislative Breakfast is planned for Saturday, March 2, at the Akron Community Center. State legislators representing Fulton County will present; everyone is welcome at the free event.

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer People who wish to help secure athletic-related items for Rochester Community Schools’ students may join the Rochester Athletic Booster Club.

Club President Charlee Schwenk said there are 200 club spots available out of 500 total.

Rochester High School football team, new football helmets for Rochester Middle School football, sensors/timers for track and field, RHS cheerleading uniforms, swim storage equipment and lap counters, a soccer speaker system, RHS softball pants and equipment, a baseball mesh fence and customized padding, and RMS volleyball poles, nets and customized pads.

The club has donated more than $70,000 for athletic equipment from 2017-2023.

“Each month we meet and we talk about things that different coaches (request),” said Schwenk.

Schwenk noted people don’t have to live locally to be boosters.

“We do a monthly drawing and so now we give $500, $100 and $50 for our winners each month,”

said Schwenk.

Rochester High School Athletic Director Kevin Renie noted items purchased through the club are things that are “more wants than needs.”

“We (through the general athletic department) try really, really hard to purchase their needs

obviously,” he said. “All of those programs have their own individual (extracurricular activity) account.”

Schwenk noted the teams also conduct its own fundraisers as well.

Indiana companies band together on health care reform

By WHITNEY DOWNARD Indiana Capital Chronicle Fifteen Indiana businesses, including major employers and health care entities, announced a coalition recently to tackle health care reform, reduce costs and bolster the workforce.

Dubbed the Indiana Business Health Collaborative, the partnership has five guiding principles: collaboration, competition, education, commitment and results. Former U.S. Rep. Luke Messer, a longtime politician, will lead the group as its chief executive.

“Hoosier businesses, colleges and universities, and the health care industry have spoken: driving better health outcomes for our state will require open collaboration between all stakeholders,” said Messer in a statement. “Successfully addressing health care affordability in Indiana, without compromising quality or access to critical services that countless Hoosiers depend on, will require a market-based approach. The Indiana Business Health Collaborative will unite businesses and health care industry stakeholders to craft market solutions geared toward maintaining a healthy workforce and bolstering the state’s economic competitiveness.”

“Improving health outcomes for Hoosiers begins with expanding access to high-quality health care through innovative ideas and a market-based approach,” said Kevin Hern, a senior vice president for Lilly USA. “Lilly is proud to join the Indiana Business Health Collaborative as a founding member and support the organization’s five guiding principles as a blueprint for developing comprehensive solutions to address cost, access, and quality of care in Indiana.”

Various health systems noted the need to make sure health care reform was sustainable for local hospitals, many of which are the largest employers in their communities.

“Baptist Health Floyd is honored to be a part of a group of highly motivated organizations invested in making health care more affordable for all Hoosiers,” said Mike Schroyer, the president of Baptist Health Floyd. “It will take collaboration between all stakeholders to drive better health outcomes and lower health care costs for our state. I look forward to working alongside members of the IBHC to develop initiatives that preserve access to quality care and lower health care costs in every community, large and small.”

Rochester Rotary Club recognized as February Chamber Member of Month

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer The Rochester Rotary Club is the Fulton County Chamber of Commerce’s February Member of the Month.

The club was recognized after one of its meetings Tuesday, Feb. 6.

Its motto is “Service Above Self,” said President Darin Beeker.

The 14 members of the club work to help local youth.

“Probably the biggest project that we do ... is we have a shoe program,” noted Beeker.

The club purchases shoes for kids in need throughout the county, giving away around 150 pairs last year.

President-Elect Sheena Bitterling said the club also has “a focus on education,” giving out a nursing scholarship.

“If you want kids to be able to

achieve their educational goals, we’ve got to make sure those base needs are met,” she added of the club giving out things like shoes.

“Of course we donate to various organizations throughout the year,” said Beeker.

The Rotary Club raised funds over the past year via fruit sales, a 5K and a food booth at the Trail of Courage.

Beeker said he encouraged others to join the club just because of its goal of “giving back to the community.”

Anyone 18 and older is welcome to join the club. People may reach out to the club’s Facebook group, Rochester Rotary Club District 6540, to learn how to join or stop by a meeting.

The club meets at noon on the first and third Tuesday of each month, at The Times Theater’s Char-Bell Studio currently and should meet at breakfast time during the summer.
