Trying to bring in an industrial park to Rochester is part of what the city is working on right now, said Rochester Mayor Trent Odell.

Odell gave that news during his first State of the City address Wednesday, Jan. 24.

It was delivered during the Kiwanis Club of Rochester’s meeting at the Fulton County Historical Society.

He said talks regarding the park have gone on for three to five months.

“We’ve also had a private investor offer some land to get us started thinking that way,” said Odell. “In the last week or so, we’ve had some other private investors come on board with that potential, so we can

expand and really justify the expense of the infrastructure for that.”

“All I can say is there’s a lot going on in that arena right now,” he added. “Mike Ladd has done a tremendous job as the (Fulton Economic Development Corp.) director.”

As for other city projects, Odell said plans were to finally do roadwork at Blacketor Drive, with Rochester working to obtain state Community Crossings Matching Grant Program funds.

He said that will help with “business expansion” in that area.

Odell said the extension of Apache Drive was “on hold right now because of the weather, but that’s going to be finished (in) mid to late summer.”

Literacy director loves his job

By LAURIE LECHLITNER Staff Writer “I think I love my job so much because I enjoy learning new things,” stated David Hazledine, Rochester. “I also enjoy sharing the things I’ve learned with others.”

Hazledine has an infectious enthusiasm that radiates to all he comes into contact with. In August, he was named the new literacy director at the Fulton County Public Library’s Rochester branch.

“Actually, it was during my 10 years working for The Papers Incorporated, that I found myself going to the Fulton County Library on a regular basis,” he remarked. “While reporting for the Shopping Guide, I’d stop into the library for leads on articles. I’d also peruse the books and movies.

I’ve always loved libraries.”

Being connected to the library is part of his heritage.

“My great-grandfather was the head librarian at Indiana State University, Terre Haute. As a matter of fact, Cunningham Memorial Library was named after him,” he said.

A graduate of Macalester College, Saint Paul, Minn, Hazledine is an English major.

“Being from Terre Haute, I always wanted to see what life was like in a larger city. Attending college in the Twin Cities gave me that opportunity. Macalester is a great school,” he said.

When Hazledine found out the position of literacy director was open, he realized he had some big shoes to fill.

“I was walking into the spot that had been filled by Gordon Bohs and Tim Roe, both of whom have had a positive impact on the library and the community,” he said.

However, he also realized his previous work and life experience made him uniquely qualified for the multi-faceted position.

“Of course, I’d be teaching the English as a second language program, and I had earned my ESL certification around 2012 when I taught English in Vietnam for a few years.”

As an adjunct professor at Ivy Tech between 2007 and 2012, he spent one semester teaching academic writing to inmates at the Miami County Correctional Facility.

“That experience has come in handy as I am now leading a writing class with four inmates in the Fulton County Jail’s Chemical Addiction Program. So far,

it’s going great. I couldn’t ask for more engaged and enthusiastic students,” he said.

After college, Hazledine’s time in Minneapolis/St. Paul was spent playing guitar, writing songs and performing live with several bands between 19952006.

“Music has been shown to be extremely beneficial for learning,” he noted. “I’m looking forward to introducing more music-oriented programming to the library, and right now I’m honing my skills as a guitar teacher with coworkers at the library, but if anyone is interested in learning to play, they can contact me. You’re never too old to start.”

Hazledine is also keen on continuing the work of Roe, who started “Poet Tree,” an annual collection of work by local writers of all ages.

“I’m a poetry buff myself,” he said, “and I recently got a grant for a poetry workshop with a visiting writer, which I hope will run this spring.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better job,” exclaimed Hazledine.

“It’s an opportunity to incorporate my love for learning, languages, literature, the arts and interest in people into my work. It will stretch me. I’ll be using all the

Odell reiterated his good relationship with Vance, who was present at the speech, as well as county leaders.

He recognized Fulton County Commissioners Bryan Lewis and Rick Ranstead who were in attendance.

Odell also acknowledged Rochester City Attorney Andy Perkins, new Rochester City Councilwoman Amy Roe, and Clerk-Treasurer Beth Stocking, his wife, Stacy, and his new Board of Public Works and Safety members Gary Hartwig and Brett Curnutt, who

were all present. “(They) are extremely talented individuals,” said Odell of Hartwig and Curnutt. “We make a great team. We’ve had great chemistry, and I’m really excited about the three of us working together the next four years.”

Odell said all city department heads were to continue on under his administration.

“We’ve had a couple new appointments to the park board: Kimberlie Landis and Ed Richard,” said Odell.

He appointed Guy Bigler to fill Curnett’s spot on the Rochester Redevelopment Commission.

Leaders aren’t the only people who are responsible for the city improving though, explained Odell in the speech. Citizens in general also have an important role to play — that of taking action when needed and not simply complaining, he said.

“If you’re going to complain about things, get involved, put forth effort and put your money where your mouth is quite honestly,” said Odell.

“Not matter what goals I have, no matter what wheels we already have in motion ... the success or the failure of them is shared by all of us,” he added.

“So that would be another area where we can possibly market (for local business),” said Odell.

Regarding the Rochester Parks and Recreation Department, Odell said the summer parks program for kids will return this year and be free.

“Lindsay Barts is going to oversee that with the park board’s di-

rection,” he said.

Other Projects Odell said other projects the city’s planning for include making improvements at the public beach and finding a way to help people who battle addiction and homelessness in Rochester.

Odell also said he had talked with Fulton County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jillian Smith, Julie Shambarger with The Times Theater and the Rochester Downtown Partnership about bringing new events to downtown Rochester.

He said there’s been suggestion of having a year-round farmers market in a building in the city.

Odell also shared his desire to create a youth advisory council for city leaders, stating he’d been in communication with Rochester Community Schools Superintendent Jana Vance to bring that about.

He shared he’d consider getting youth involved with senior citizens in Rochester, so the latter group could be involved as well and pass on knowledge to younger generations.

As we study the events of Pentecost, it is important that we separate the accidentals from the essentials. The spirit came and the people heard the sound of rushing wind and saw tongues of fire. The spirit baptized and filled the believers, and then spoke as they praised God in various languages.

The spirit empowered Peter to preach, and then he convicted the listeners so that 3,000 of them trusted Christ and were redeemed. Let’s consider these ministries one by one.

First the spirit came (Acts 2:2-3). The Holy Spirit had been

active prior to Pentecost and had worked in creation (Genesis 1:1-2), in Old Testament history (Judges 6:34; 1 Samuel 16:13), and in the life and ministry of Jesus (Luke 1:30-37; 4:1, 14; Acts 10:38). However, now there would be two changes: the spirit would dwell in people and not just come on them, and his presence would be permanent, not temporary (John 14:16-17).

Second, the spirit baptized (Acts 1:5). The Greek word baptize has two meanings, one literal and the other figurative. The word literally means “to submerge,” but the figurative meaning is “to be identified with.” The baptism of the spirit is that act of God by which he identified believers with the exalted head of the church, Jesus Christ, and formed the spiritual body of Christ on earth (1 Corinthians 12:12-14). Historically, this took place at Pentecost; today, it takes place whenever a sinner trusts Jesus Christ and is born again.

Third, the spirit filled (Acts 2:4). The filling of the spirit has to do with power for witness and service (Acts 1:8). We are not exhorted to be baptized by the spirit, for this is something God does once and for all when we trust his son. But we are

commanded to be filled with the spirit (Ephesians 5:18), for we need his power constantly if we are to serve God effectively. At Pentecost, the Christians were filled with the spirit and experienced the baptism of the spirit; but after that, they experienced many fillings (Acts 4:8, 31; 9:17; 13:9) but no more baptisms. The Holy Spirit has revealed God’s truth to us in words (1 Corinthians 2:12-13), and these words have definite meanings that must not be changed.

Fourth, the spirit spoke (Acts 2:5-13). Notice that the believers were praising God, not preaching the Gospel, and that they used known languages, not an “unknown tongue” (Acts 2:6, 8). Luke named 15 different geographical locations and clearly stated the citizens of those places heard Peter and the others declare God’s wonderful works in languages they could understand. The Greek word translated “language” in Acts 2:6 and “tongue” in Acts 2:8 refers to a language or dialect of some country or district (Acts 21:40; 22:2; 26:14).

Nancy (Kilmer) Ramer, 84 years, 4 months and 28 days, Tippecanoe, passed away at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024, at her residence.

She was born on Aug. 20, 1939, in Ephrata, Pa., the daughter of Martin and Mary (Brubacher) Kilmer. She was united in marriage on Oct. 27, 1964, to David M. Ramer, who survives.

Along with her husband, she is survived by six sons, Rufus (Arlene) Ramer, Rochester, Cleon (Mary) Ramer, Penn Yan, N.Y., Mark (Irene) Ramer, Rochester, Ralph (Lucy) Ramer, Argos, Neal Ramer, at home, and Harley (Treva) Ramer, Argos; four daughters, Rita (Henry) Imhoff, Liberty, Ky., Erla (Leon) Burkholder, Goshen, Mary (Eddie) Imhoff, Argos, and Anna Ramer, at home; 59 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; one brother, Harvey (Judy) Kilmer, California, Ma.; one sister, Fannie (Eddie) Martin, Hubbardston, Mich.; and three sisters-in-laws, Annie, Ella and Martha Kilmer, all of Versailles, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Adin, William, Menno, Eli and Rufus Kilmer; five sisters, Lydia Sauder, Emma Kilmer, Amanda Burkholder, Lucinda Baker and Anna Mary Kilmer; two grandsons, Merle Ramer and Karl Imhoff; one great-granddaughter, Mariah Ramer; and two stillborn great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to express thanks for all the labor, food and prayers over these times. Travelers, family, friends and ministry are invited for the noon meal.

Funeral services was conducted at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at the Ridgeview Old Order Mennonite Church, Elm Road, Tippecanoe. Burial took place in the Ridgeview Old Order Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Friends visited from 2-4 and 5-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at her residence.

Mary Jo Wilson, 84, Rochester, the wife and best friend of James Cary (Jay) Wilson, passed away at 9:40 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024, at Woodlawn Hospital after a serious fall.

She was born Jan. 2, 1940, in Burket and was the cherished daughter of Elgie and Velma Nelson Vandermark. Growing up, she shared her childMARY JO hood with her brother, Lyle, on a chicken farm in WILSON Talma. With great Tiger pride, she graduated with the class of 1958, where she played the coronet in the band. Mary Jo continued her formal education at Nashville’s David Lipscomb University, where she majored in home economics.

On Sept. 17, 1960, Mary Jo married Jay Wilson at Rochester’s Church of Christ. They enjoyed over 63 years of marriage with highlights of park explorations, vacations in Florida and serving their church, community and those around them, but mostly cherished time with their children: Stephen, Joel, Alisa and Julie, as well as their grands and great-grands.

Mary Jo loved her Lord while serving and loving her church family at the Church of Christ for over six decades. As the wife of a preacher and elder, she faithfully dedicated her life to ministering and caring for others by Jay’s side.

In the early years, Mary Jo shared her passion for reading as a librarian at the Fulton County Library and drove the Fulton County Library’s Bookmobile. She loved her flowers, whether planted at her home or decorated throughout her home, adding color to her world. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, making many gifts of love for her family and friends.

Mary Jo was also an excellent cook and baker, sharing her culinary treats with her family, church and friends. Mary Jo enjoyed reading, putting puzzles together and watching Wheel of Fortune, but nothing thrilled her more than getting together with her family and making memories with them.

Mary Jo will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Jay; four children, Stephen J. Wilson (Penny) of Syracuse, Joel Duane Wilson (Elizabeth) of Mentone, Alisa Brackney (David) of Burton, Mich., and Julie Piazza (Pete) Clarkston, Mich.; 19 grandchildren, Jay Cary (Ally) Wilson, Joanna Weimer (Logan), Estella Calloway (Shaun), Rachel Ransbottom (Darren), Rebecca Wilson, Mary Baughman (Zach), Isabella Ault (Ayden), Janelle Wilson, Gabby Helvey (Matthew), Jeremiah Wilson, David Wilson (Meshell), Isaiah Wilson, Jucinda Wilson, Katelyn Brackney, Leneigh Laster (Anthony), Hannah Sanders (Matt), Grace Brackney, Caryann Piazza and Mitchell Piazza; and 15 greatgrandchildren.

Preceding Mary Jo in death are her parents, Elgie and Velma Vandermark; brother, Lyle Vandermark and his wife Carol; and niece, Lori Vandermark.

A celebration of life for Mary Jo Wilson was at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the Rochester Church of Christ, 120 E. 5th St., Rochester.

Jim Dillinger, minister, officiated. Friends visited with her family from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Private family graveside rites took place at the Mud Lake Chapel Cemetery.

J.T. Jones, 33, died at 10:58 p.m., Jan. 19, 2024, in Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.

DYW participation helps Caston senior prepare for her future

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Caston High School senior Breana Amezquita said participating in Distinguished Young Women competitions is helping her prepare for her future life.

Amezquita, of Twelve Mile, will compete against 21 other girls for the title of Distinguished Young Woman of Indiana Friday, Feb. 16, and Saturday, Feb. 17, at Indiana University of Kokomo’s Havens Auditorium.

She previously was named the Distinguished Young Woman of Fulton County in November.

Amezquita said when she first heard about Distinguished Young Women she wasn’t interested in participating, but has since changed her mind.

“This is a really good opportunity,” she said. “I am pursuing (further) education ... and I need some sort of background to get into scholarships. I was like, Yeah, this definitely sounds like something that could benefit me for the future, and so far it has. It really has.”

Amezquita already took home $1,750 in scholarship funds from winning several categories of competition at DYW of Fulton County and its overall title and can gain more at state.

The competition categories are the same for state as they were locally: scholastic, judged on each girl’s academics and extracurricular activities; interview; fitness; self-expression, judged on answering an on-stage question; and talent.

Amezquita topped the interview, self-expression and talent categories at the county level. Her talent was reading her original poem “His Eyes” about her boyfriend.

She said she was surprised to win the county competition. After hearing that Alexa Finke, whom she thought would win, was first runner-up, making Amezquita the winner, she said her “jaw just kind of dropped.”

Amezquita’s focus then shifted to state.

She’s balancing preparation for the DYW of Indiana competition

with her busy academic and extracurricular load.

“I’m in drama club, Spanish club and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. I’m the secretary of Key Club and then in the National Honor Society,” she said of her activities in addition to sports.

Amezquita is prepping for state competition by working with the Distinguished Young Woman of Pulaski County winner Allie Sanders and Distinguished Young Woman of Cass County winner Emily Sanchez.

“We’ve gotten so close,” said Amezquita of Sanders and Sanchez.

Amezquita is doing several mock interviews and learning the fitness and opening and closing numbers to be ready for state.

Heading to the state competition has its perks.

Amezquita and the other girls will spend five days in Kokomo and get to see places like Seiberling Mansion and take part in activities like a bowling night.

She’s set to room with the Distinguished Young Woman of North Montgomery County Sydney Neideffer and Distinguished Young Woman of Avon Kelsey Babinec.

Overall, Amezquita said she’s gained “connections” through her participation in DYW, which is a reason why she would encourage other girls to consider being a part of it.

“There’s a lot of networking that goes through it,” she said. “You realize, Oh, next year I’m going to be in college or I’m going to start looking for internships for my future career. You could definitely meet people throughout this process that can help you in those situations, and it just helped me improve my interview skills ... I’m definitely more comfortable speaking to people than I was even a year ago.”

“It definitely has a lot of benefits,” Amezquita added.

Her future plans involve her studying biomedical health sciences at Purdue University and becoming a physician’s assistant, with perhaps later going to medical school.

Riddle Optimist Club helps bring book vending machine to school

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Riddle Elementary School’s Optimist Club members have helped its classmates enjoy reading through a new book vending machine.

A ribbon cutting was held Jan. 22 for the machine at the school. The club, known, as the Barkman Optimist Bunch, helped raise money to get it.

Riddle second grade teacher Mona Zeyen, who leads the B.O.B. club with Leesa Kolter, said it took the group several years to raise more than $3,000 for the machine. The school’s Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program helped “spon-

sor” the remaining amount, she said.

“Some of the students who actually worked on (fundraising) are now actually at the middle school,” said Zeyen.

The kids, Riddle third and fourth graders, raised money through a lemonade stand at the school and helping with the adult Optimist Club of Rochester’s pumpkin patch.

Kids may get free books out of the machine through the school’s rewards program or through earning “three Zebra stripes” through academics and more, said Zeyen.

The B.O.B. kids helped pick out the books currently in the machine, with Riddle librarian Cheri Thomas paying for the books via discounts.

Kids in the B.O.B. will help buy more books via the club’s fundraising.

by Tessa Brooks, whose mother is a Riddle staff member. It’s decorated with a zebra reading atop a stack of books.

Zeyen said the kids who helped get the machine, including those now at Rochester Middle School, are to be honored via a time capsule put in the machine with photos and the kids’ signatures.

“That way they will always be remembered that they’re the ones that helped bring it to the school,” she said.

Fulton County plans to add buggy lanes to Old US 31 North

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Fulton County is hoping to add buggy lanes to Old US 31 North.

Fulton County Commissioners’ Vice President Rick Ranstead and Fulton County Highway Superintendent John Geier said that’s one of the roadway projects being worked on.

The county has submitted an application for federal aid to do the work, with the federal government then paying 80% to the county’s 20%.

The project will redo 4.5 miles of Old US 31N “from the river bridge to SR 110,” said Ranstead.

Geier noted the project will cost an estimated $6.5 million.

Buggy lanes would be put in from CR 450N to CR 550N, he said.

Ranstead noted there have several wrecks in that area.

“There’s a factory ramp coming around the corner, and cars come flying over the hills, and the buggies (are) going slow, so we’ve had a couple of accidents

out there on the hills,” he said.

“We’d also reduce the hill at CR 450N for better site clearance and then add a turning lane (there),” said Geier.

If the county receives federal aid, the project will be a number of years out as it’s a five-year process to get funds, explained Geier.

A road project happening sooner is the repaving of Old US 31S, from the Rochester city limits to CR 650S. The project was just awarded to Phend and Brown for $4,063,395.85.

“They’re going to repave it and deep mill and resurface it,” said Geier.

He estimated the 6.5-mile stretch to be done this year.

That project is also being paid for through federal aid, with the county footing 20% of the bill.

Other future projects include Bridge 161 over Grassy Creek on CR 800W. “We’ve also got Bridge 33, which is the Talma Bridge over the Tippecanoe River. That one is

Rochester winter sports update —

Zebras win 4th straight wrestling sectional The Rochester boys wrestling team scored 256.5 points to win the 10-team Plymouth sectional.

Guest Writer Rochester won its fourth consecutive sectional title and their 14th in school history.

They had won the previous three sectionals at Peru before being reassigned to Plymouth for this season.

Rochester had 11 advancing wrestlers, including six sectional champions.

The champions included: Layne Horn (126), Brant Beck (165), Declan Gard (175), Colin Weiand (190), Alex Deming (215) and Brady Beck (HWT).

Horn, Brant Beck, Deming and Brady Beck are all undefeated on the season and ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes, according to IndianaMat.com. All four are returning state qualifiers with Deming and Brady Beck returning state placers.

Others advancing to the regional this Saturday included: Grant Holloway, who was second at 106; D.J. Basham, who was second at 132; Kale Shotts, who was third at 144; Wyatt Davis, who was second at 150; and Ethan Amezquita, who was second at 157.

The top four in each weight class advanced to the Penn regional at 9 a.m. this Saturday.

Rochester is a two-time defending regional champion, but now has been assigned to Penn, where the host Kingsmen are three-time defending regional champions.

Boys Basketball Bryce Baugher scored 11 points, and Owen Prater and Jack Reffett had 10 each for the visiting Rochester boys basketball team in a 68-36 rout over North White Saturday.

Forcing 15 first-half turnovers while committing just four themselves, the lead was 46-20 at halftime.

Rochester is 7-1 over the last eight years against North White.

Tanner Reinartz scored 15 points to lead all five starters in double figures. Rochester boys basketball team forced 18 turnovers in handling visiting Northfield 76-54 at the RHS gym Friday.

Rochester improved to 6-6

overall and 3-1 in the Three Rivers Conference.

Rochester led by as many as 26 points in the second half.

Rochester has conference road games against Southwood Thursday and Lewis Cass Saturday.

Girls Basketball Elli Baker hit two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as part of a game-high 17 points, and Hannah Holmes added 13 to lead the Northfield girls basketball team to a wire-to-wire 46-33 win over visiting Rochester at Kaltenmark Gym Thursday.

Rylee Clevenger and Aubrey Wilson scored 10 points each, and Ella McCarter added nine, but Rochester could not overcome a scoreless first quarter to finish 11-11 overall and 6-3 in the Three Rivers Conference.

Rochester will finish in sole possession of fourth place in the TRC. Northfield will finish in a tie for fifth.

Rochester did not have a winning streak or losing streak longer than two games all year. They were coming off a 31-23 win over Class 2A, No. 10 Lewis Cass 24 hours earlier.

On Wednesday, Rochester girls basketball coach Joel Burrus said he thought it took forever for the clock to run out against visiting Lewis Cass at the RHS gym.
