The food pantry was originally established in 2006 at the Church of God, offering supplies to residents

of Henry Township. Throughout the years, the basement location often proved to be an impediment to some clients and volunteers who found it difficult to navigate the stairs. The new location, however, is handicap accessible, with aisles wide enough to be navigated with a wheelchair, if needed.

Teacher shares love of art with her students %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “While I was taking art in college, one of my professors thought I should take an introduction to education class,” stated Alicia Funk, Rochester. “I’d watched my mother as an educator put in hours of preparation for her classes, so at first the idea did not appeal to me. But I eventually took the class and loved it. I’m so glad I’ve become a teacher. Now I can share my love of art with my students.”

Funk got her degree in K-12 art education from Manchester College. She started teaching at Rochester Middle School in 2005.

She transferred to Riddle and Columbia elementaries from 2009 to 2021. This year she’s teaching at RMS and Riddle.

“I enjoy teaching students of

all ages,” she said. “Columbia has preschool through first grade students. I love the little ones’ passion and excitement about art. Of course, with the middle school, the kids share creative ideas. That’s where relationships are made and built. The third and fourth graders at Riddle still like art and are learning and growing together. Each age group has their own plusses.”

She remembers her own elementary days as an artist. “I loved drawing and watercolors.

My elementary art teacher spotted my talent and offered me private lessons. I was part of a group of hand-selected art students.”

In her ongoing journey, her teachers at Valparaiso High School made very large impacts on her life. “VHS offered great art classes, doing things that are often only done in a college setting. I remem-

ber painting, drawing and jewelry making. My teachers excelled in bringing out the strengths in all of us.”

Funk enjoys inspiring her own students. “I watch for their individual skills and talents and then work to bring them out. All of my students have abilities that need to be nurtured and brought to the surface.”

Because she does not use a lot of technology in the classroom, Funk is able to work hands-on with her students. “Some of the kids have never done papier-mâché in the past. My younger students may need a lesson or two on how to hold their scissors. Learning the basic skills is very important in the art classroom.”

Funk is able to spot talent even when her students are very young.

“I’ll look for those who use space and portion accurately. In their final projects, I survey the colors they choose and the values they’ve created. I also notice their mastery of art tools.”

Although she realizes many of her students will not become professional artists who can support themselves with their craft, Funk seeks to nurture an appreciation of art in her classroom. “Art is everywhere, whether they’re looking at a classic painting or some commercial art. Those who excel in art, learn how to think outside the box.

They develop problem-solving skills and an open mind. These skills will help them be more successful in life.”

Access to the pantry is based on income, and is available to residents of Henry and Newcastle townships. Clients sign in when they come to the pantry and are welcome to return every four weeks. In 2020, the pantry serviced more than 1,600 people. In 2021, the numbers through July indicated the numbers are down, primarily due to the increase in government assistance.

During the height of the pandemic, the food pantry continued to serve its clients by creating a list of available items for people who drove up and bringing what was requested to them in their vehicle. They continue to provide in-home delivery, within reason, to shut-ins who cannot make it to the pantry.

“We are still seeing new clients come in to the food pantry, and an increase in elderly clients,” said board member Bonnie Dunbar. “There are volunteers from all eight churches who give their time to the pantry in a variety of roles.”

Let’s study the Bible

The Bible is the word of God (Read 2 Timothy 3:1-17)

The apostle Paul is our best example of a worker for the Lord.

He hid nothing. See Acts 20. Paul names the cities in the area near Timothy’s home, because Timothy would be familiar with them. Timothy knew Paul’s doctrine (teaching); his manner of life (conduct); the purpose that motivated his life (see Acts 20:24; 2 Timothy 4:7); the faith that sustained him in trial; the long-suffering, love, and endurance he showed, even when persecuted; and the wonderful way God took care of him through it all. Paul had been a divine object lesson to young Timothy, and we

ought to be examples to others, too.

Timothy’s relationship to the Bible began when he was a child and learned the Old Testament Scriptures from his mother and grandmother. They did not merely teach him the facts of the Bible; they gave him assurance and spiritual understanding. Timothy knew for himself the truth of the word; he did not depend on others to defend the word for him.

This word imparted faith to him (Romans 10:17), and this faith in Christ brought salvation.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 is a great testimony to the divine origin and character of the Bible. The Bible is the inspired word of God. The word “inspired” means “God-breathed — filled with the breath of God.” The spirit of God enabled men of God to write the Bible (2 Peter 1:20-21), for the spirit of God is the “breath” of God (John 3:1-8; Ezekiel. 37:114). “All scripture” means every word of God is inspired.

What is the purpose of the Bible? Of course, salvation is the first purpose (2 Timothy 3:15), but Christian living is also included.

The word is profitable for teaching (doctrine), conviction (reproof), setting right (correction), and dis-

cipline (instruction). It enables the child of God to become a man or woman of God, matured in the things of the Lord. “Perfect” (2 Timothy 3:17) does not mean sinless; it means “mature.” And “thoroughly furnished” means “fully equipped” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). So, the Bible transforms the child of 2 Timothy 3:15 into a mature person in Christ; it equips the Christians to be servants. It is fine for Christians to take study courses and learn methods of ministry, but the best way for them to equip themselves to serve God is to study and practice the Bible. Study books tell us how, but the Bible gives us the motivation and power to live what we learn.

The great need today among churches and Christians is to return to the Bible. If the churches do not get back to God’s word, the satanic deceivers will take over and millions of lost sinners will face God’s great judgment when they die because they were led astray by religious lies.

James M. Pennell, 79, Rochester, passed away at 11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2022, at his residence.

He was born July 17, 1942, in Rochester, the son of Robert W. and Wilda J. (Camplin) Pennell. On July 23, 1982, in Rochester, he married Carolyn Warmbrod and she survives.

Mr. Pennell had worked as carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Pennell, Rochester; son, Zachary Pennell, Bourbon; like a son, Dusty Stephens, Rochester; and grandchild, Isaac Pennell, Bourbon.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Janet L. Ballinger Accomplished Bowler Janet L. “Dolly” Ballinger, 81, Rochester, passed away at 12:12 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022, at Peabody Retirement Community, North Manchester.

She was born May 5, 1940, in Indianapolis, the daughter of Thurman and Lova (Snyder) Azbell.

She loved to play euchre, bunco and had been an accomplished bowler traveling across the state and areas participating in numerous bowling tournaments throughout her life.

Survivors include her children, Alden (Judy) Ballinger, Watervliet, Mich., Don (Sarah) Ballinger, Rochester, Jim Ballinger, Lakeville, William (Kathy) Ballinger, Bremen, Trina Kucera, Indiana, Regina Fogelsanger, Rochester, and Patches (Robin) Conley, Tennessee; 20 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brother, Wendell Azbell, North Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Wendy Nolen; grandson, Thomas Perkins; four brothers; and one sister.

Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester. Friends visited from 1-3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester.

Carole June Thompson, 87, Rochester, went home to be with her Lord Jesus at 3:06 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022, at Wynnfield Crossing, Rochester.

She was born Oct. 16, 1934, in Peru, the daughter of Elbert and Jane (Webber) Reuter. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1952. On Aug. 8, 1952, she married Ted C. Davis. He preceded her in &$52/( -81( death May 23, 2011. In May 2015, she married Paul D. 7+203621 Thompson at the Rochester Church of God. Carole was a quilter for many years. She loved her Jesus, flowers, kitties and had attended Safe Harbor Church.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Thompson, Rochester; daughters, Janet (Vern) Biber, Rochester, and Joanna (Doug) Manns, Akron; grandchildren, Logan (Lacey) Manns, Silver Lake, Jessica (Ed) Haines, Akron, Brianne (Joe) Miller, Rochester, Wes (Rilee) Manns, Silver Lake, and Beth Biber, Phoenix, Ariz.; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Bonnie had worked at Akron schools early in life and had been a homemaker caring for her family and the family farm. She had attended Silver Creek Church of God and had been active as a 4-H leader. She enjoyed sewing, crafts and spending time with her grandchildren.

Marcia Kay Taylor, 83, Akron, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022.

On March 8, 1938, Marcia Kay Hunneshagen was born in Rochester to Hugh V. and Geneva (Brooker) Hunneshagen. On July 11, 1956, she married Dennis D. Taylor, who passed away Sept. 7, 2010.

She was a 1956 graduate of Rochester High 0$5&,$ .$< School, where she was active in art. She studied with 7$</25 Art Instruction Inc. of Minneapolis, Minn.

In 1959, Marcia and Dennis moved to Orlando, Fla., where she was employed by Curry Offset Press and Glen L. Martin Missile Company in the Bullpup Division as an artist. When they returned to Rochester, she was employed by Topps Manufacturing Company and McMahon-O’Connor Construction Company. While working at Topps Manufacturing, she did a piece of art work for Canada and France. She also worked in the printing, photography, embroidery,and silk-screening departments.

Marcia enjoyed gardening, collecting recipes and cookbooks. She studied genealogy for 50 years, getting one line as far back as William the Conqueror. She was a 38-year member of the Manitou Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. Marcia was also a 36-year member of the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865 member of Marinda B Dye tent 17 from Kokomo. She indexed books for the DAR Genealogy Library and earned the bookworm pin and bar. She embroidered several bell pulls, table runners and banners. She won first place at the national level several times. Marcia also enjoyed playing the dulcimer and won honorable mention with her writing of “George Washington-We Love You Still.” She decorated family graves every Memorial Day for 53 years.

Survivors include three children: daughters, Sally (Alan) Sterk, King, N.C., and Sara (Ron) Kruger, Akron; a son, Samual (Jody) Taylor, Logansport; a sister, Marilyn Henderson, Pontiac, Mich.; five grandchildren, Chuck (Chrissie) Sterk, Kaela (Scott) Virgil, Terra Kruger, Courtney (Dustin) Stone and Ashley (Sam) Spencer; seven great-grandchildren, Calvin Sterk, Jaxtyn Virgil, Jadyn Virgil, Laela Virgil, Xandyr Johnson, Karli Hogue and Kiana Hogue; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Marcia in death are her parents; husband; brother, Hugh Hunneshagen Jr.; sister, Roberta Friedland; and granddaughter, Aubrey Hogue.

After raising her children, she became a realtor, had owned a restaurant while living in Colorado and owned Everyday Gourmet Store in Rochester. She was a full-time nanny to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even their friends, always supporting them in all of their sports and extra-curricular activities. Her friends and members of the community looked forward to her daily Facebook posts. She was a dedicated Notre Dame football fan, and enjoyed having coffee with friends, gardening and camping.

He enjoyed going to auctions, fish fries and sporting events, and he was an usher for Notre Dame football games for 25 years.

Family brings Opry traditions to Rochester hometown %\ $/,621 +$1'< 6WDII :ULWHU Times Theater Board of Directors announced plans for the Round Barn Opry at the Times last week in a press release.

The project began in November 2021 after a recommendation for such an event came from Thad Stewart, who was recently named producer of the Round Barn Opry at the Times board meeting Wednesday, Jan. 19. Stewart had brought the suggestion to the Times Theater board members. It wasn’t too long after that the idea started to come to life.

Stewart is a seasoned musician and has a passion for music. He is very enthusiastic about being selected as the producer of the Opry.

After his daughter, Kate Karter, got her break in the music industry from Orange Blossom Opry in Florida, he knew something similar would go over well here in Rochester. He is eager to get started and create something Rochester can be proud of as well as attract visitors and musicians from all over.

Although she will be traveling for her own shows and gigs, Karter plans to keep her roots in her hometown. “I’m excited to be playing on a big stage right here in Rochester,” stated Karter. She will be playing piano for the house band at the Round Barn Opry as well as emcee the show.

The Opry will be every other week, with performances Thursday and Fridays. The Thursday night show will be competition style between two performers, the opry likes to call them showcasers. The audience will then vote for their favorite performance. The Friday night feature show will consist of

the winner from the night prior.

Musicians and bands will have to submit an audition tape and music prior to performing. “These are pre auditioned performers, their music is sent in ahead of time and our musicians learn and can accompany the performer, it’s all ahead of the public seeing it Thursday. Then the public gets to vote live in person,” stated project manager Devon Gibbons. “There is a tradition in an Opry, it’s competitive,” added the Times Theater Board Chairman Julie Shambarger.

“The Time Theater’s historical stage, the Opry’s wide appeal and Rochester’s central location creates a huge opportunity for all,” Shambarger shared. “No one has a stage like us in Indiana,” Gibbons noted.

Even Karter explained the Times stage will be her biggest stage she has ever performed on.

The goal for the venue is to be done and ready to host its first night of opry by summer 2022. When it comes to the building itself, work is still being completed to ready the building for occupancy. “Larger fundraising efforts for an upgraded sound system and marquee are underway, we just finished the ceiling,” Gibbons explained, “We will begin painting soon, things are in motion.”

So the future of the Times Theater is looking grand. This is going to be something the whole family can enjoy, said Gibbons. Once the Times Theater is open to the public, plans include live music, movies and community events, explained Shambarger.

Our town has increasingly become hazardous for residents to cross the street because of the high

speeds many travelers have used.

I have noticed a decidedly calmer stretch of SR 25 in our town. The town board’s proactive stance to increase a safer thoroughfare is very appreciated.

Since the mid 1990s, the Legion has had the same rifles they use for their honor guard.

the Legion received their newly reconditioned rifles from Alabama just a few weeks ago. The firearms are on loan from the Army, and Beckman will have to report to TACOM, who manages the Army’s ground equipment supply chain, every three years.

Members of the Legion fired the rifles Thursday, Jan. 20, to test them before using them for the public. “Fire at will,” Beckman ordered before shots were fired.

Beckman explained they have to change straps and fire them prior to being used so they know if any will misfire or have any other flaws.

I just barely can remember the Model T Ford, what a noisy engine!

Show tickets were only 14 cents.

I can remember especially Friday and Saturday nights, the cops were always “walking their beat.”

At one time we had a large hotel on the corner of 7th and Main Street, it was the Arlington hotel, there were several barbers who worked there and I think you could also get your shoes shined! It was very possi-

ble in the winter several circus people stayed as Rochester was the winter headquarters for the Cole Bros. Circus.

Would you believe Wile’s clothing store’s money transactions were done on an overhead money rail container?

I remember Rochester having 5 restaurants downtown, three men’s clothing stores, three shoe stores, two hardware and twodime stores.

I can remember going to the three-ring circus here, they were selling Cracker Jack’s with the prizes in the box! I was hoping to win a watch. (No such luck) The circus was destroyed by fire in the late ’40s.

Hard to forget this one: Carhops, good food, and my favorite drink called “Green River” at the Streamliner, also a great cruising place!

Back then, we would have free outdoor movies, and this was a treat for the younger kids. Note: bring your own popcorn.

Election of supervisor A soil and water conservation supervisor of Fulton County is a public official elected or appointed to sit on a board of five individuals to serve a three-year term. After serving that term, they have the option of running for reelection or re-appointment by the State Soil Conservation Board.

A supervisor’s duties include identifying soil and water resource concerns in our county and to connect land users to sources of education and financial support that can assist them in implementing such practices on their individual farm. Local citizens recognize the district as a key leader in our soil and water quality. The district’s information and education outreach programs focus on many related natural resource concerns such as water infiltration, erosion control and soil health. This year, the nominating committee has nominated Art Gudas and Adam Luhnow to run for election for Fulton County supervisor.

Cover crops were added in 2011 and are on about two-thirds of the acres today. His goal is to have every acre planted to cover crops.

He served as a Fulton County SWCD supervisor for two terms in the 1990s and was recognized as a River Friendly Farmer for Fulton County in 2014. Gudas has attended many cover crop meetings and field days and even hosted a cover crop field day several years ago.

$57 *8'$6 Gudas has lived in Fulton County since getting married in 1987 to his wife Margaret.

They have two grown children, son, Alex, and daughter, Stacy, who recently got married in October to Damon Scott.

Gudas was raised on the family farm east of Winamac and has farmed his entire life. Alex has joined the farm operation and they currently grow corn and soybeans. Gudas started no-tilling in the ’90s and has increased no-till acres on almost every acre he farms.

Luhnow grew up in Fulton County and was a 2013 graduate from Rochester Community High School. He attended Purdue University, where he majored in agriculture systems management. After his graduation from Purdue, Luhnow worked for Biotown Ag in Reynolds. Biotown Ag is a renewable fuels farm that turns gases from manure into fuel to power generators much like the landfill. After Biotown, Luhnow went to work for Crop Fertility Specialists in Kewanna, where he sells and applicates fertilizer and chemicals.

In 2020, he started farming his own land alongside his father on the family farm. Since he came back to help on the farm and to put his own acres into production, Luhnow has started to implement cover crop practices into their yearly rotation. 2021 being their first year, they saw great results. Luhnow has also utilized biologicals to help reduce the need for synthetic fertilizers by freeing up bonded nutrients in the soil.

Luhnow is passionate about the conservation of our soil and water resources because he does not want to see our farmers go back to the days of plowing every acre, creating unwanted erosion and water loss. Not every

acre is right for no-till or cover crops, but if we can increase the number of acres that are no-tilled/minimal tilled or cover cropped, he sees that as a win. Sometimes conservation practices can be timely and require more management, but Luhnow believes that this is necessary and worthwhile to ensure our future farmers have the same opportunity we do to farm this beautiful land.

Mike Norman was re-appointed by the State Soil Conservation Board on Jan. 23 to serve another three-year term on the Fulton County SWCD Board of Supervisors. Norman has been a supervisor for our county now for nearly 30 years. Conservation practices are extremely important to Norman and he has knowledge and experience about various soilhealth-improving techniques.

He has hosted and helped with several field days promoting such practices and was involved with the INField Advantage Program for five years. Norman’s goal for using conser-

0,.( 1250$1 vation practices is to have the least negative impact on the environment and to leave the land he farms in better shape than how he found it.

Minutes of 81st annual meeting of Fulton County SWCD The 81st annual meeting of the Fulton County Soil & Water Conservation District was held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 1, at the Geneva Center, north of Rochester. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the typical in-person meeting was held via Zoom for the public to attend.

District Support Specialist Jennifer Thum hosted the online Zoom meeting and voting. There were a total of 18 inperson attendees consisting of supervisors, key agency personnel and spouses.

A breakfast was served, then Chairman Dustin Zellers called the meeting to order.

The meeting opened with recognition of county commissioners, county council and supervisors. First National Bank of Monterey sponsored the annual meeting and the FFA soil judges awards. Zellers introduced Ross Burdge as the sole candidate for re-election and Kyle Riffle as the SWCD recommended write-in candidate. Jennifer Richter nominated Riffle from the floor then, with no other nominations from the floor, the election was conducted by ballot for the in-person attendees and by Zoom for the online attendees. Votes were tallied after the 11 a.m. advertised allowable time and reported at the end of the meeting.

Associate Supervisor Glen Jones reported he and Allen Chesser presented the soils judging awards at Rochester High School Feb. 26. Awards were presented to the top four participants in the soils judging. First place: Dryden Vance; second place: Jesse Shriver; third place: Trent Reinholt; and fourth place: Haley Jones. Chesser presented two cash awards which were sponsored by First National Bank of Monterey.

Mike Norman gave some history about Joe Kroft, then presented the Joseph A. Kroft award to Dan Rosswurm, recently retired district conservationist.

Burdge announced there were no completed 4-H Soil and Water Science projects in 2020 due largely to the pandemic and the limitations of in-person events at the fair. He is hopeful that students will be able to participate fully in 2021.

Brief agency reports were given by Jeff Smith, CED of the Farm Service Agency; Mark Kepler of Purdue Extension; Troy Manges, acting district conservationist of the Natural Resources Conservation Service; Chris Gardner, Indiana State Department of Agricultures resource specialist; and Stan Moore (Zoom), region director of the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

Matt Harsh gave a rundown of some of the 2020 programs and accomplishments for the SWCD, including the purchase of a 30-foot roller crimper; the conclusion of a three-year CWI grant to fund cover crop cost share; the conclusion of the Lake and River Enhancement grant for a diagnostic study of the Lake Manitou Watershed; a new Clean Water Indiana grant to help fund the SWCD staff position and to fund training events; and a new LARE grant to help fund water quality testing in the Lake Manitou Watershed.

The SWCD continued the manure testing program. Glen Jones and Chris Gardner helped with the annual soils judging events. The SWCD served as administrator of the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, disbursing over $619,000 in payments for completed conservation practices in 2020.

Norman announced the results of the election. First place with a total of 17 votes went to Riffle for a three-year term.

Second place with a total of 16 votes went to Burdge for a one-year term. The oneyear term was created by a resignation in 2020 and will be reset on the three-year term calendar in 2022. The oath of office was administered to Burdge, Harsh and Riffle by Jennifer Thum.

Dustin closed the meeting, thanking those in attendance and looking forward to a normal annual meeting next year.

The annual meeting ended at approximately 11:05 am.

What is a district supervisor? Someone who has an awareness of local conservation issues and chooses to serve. They’re local citizens, an official, elected or appointed, to help develop management strategies regarding local conservation issues.

And, while district supervisors are elected or appointed to three-year terms, you can also volunteer to serve as an associate member (no election required). The board

may appoint associate supervisors to assist in performing duties in each district. Associate supervisors are non-voting members of the board and may not hold officer positions on the board (IC 14-4-32-4 10.5). Payment for these positions doesn’t come in monetary form, rather in the satisfaction of knowing that you are among many others helping your county conserve its natural resources for future generations, your children and grandchildren.

What are the responsibilities of a district supervisor? To be an effective district supervisor requires more than just attending a meeting. Supervisors are encouraged to serve

on various committees within the state and/ or district and have a key role in establishing natural resource policy. Part of their role is to educate the public about soil and water conservation. They may help in the development of tours, newsletters, displays and such.

The ways in which a district supervisor can contribute are endless.

In addition, they work closely with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Farm Services Agency, Indiana State Department of Agriculture and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, just to name a few. There is a popular misconception local SWCD and the NRCS are one and the same. This is untrue. While the two often work together within the same office, the district administers its own programs and

assists with programs offered by the other agency partners, while the NRCS provides the technical assistance and guidance to complete best management practices.

So, look around you. The conservation practice in the field near you may belong to a district supervisor or cooperator. District supervisors practice what they preach, and usually have farms and/or land to prove it, plus the satisfaction that they are helping to make changes for the good of all the citizens of Fulton County.

Fulton County farmer receives statewide River Friendly Farmer award Indiana’s lakes, rivers, streams and wetlands are valuable natural resources.

Protecting these water resources is imperative and 47 farmers received accolades Aug. 18 at the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds for their “river-friendly” efforts.

“Honoring these farmers annually for their conservation efforts is a high priority for the state association of soil and water conservation districts. We are so pleased to be able to meet in person and show our ‘thanks’ for helping us improve water quality and build soil health statewide,” stated Bobby Hettmansperger, board president, Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts. “We need everyone to get on board like these farmers and make the protection of natural resources a priority so they are here to enjoy for future generations.”

Glen Jones was named Fulton County’s River Friendly Farmer this year. Jones’ farm currently produces sheep, alfalfa hay, pasture, timber and row crops by a tenant.

Jones uses intensive rotational grazing. All riparian areas have been converted to hay or pasture. No-till and cover crops are required of his tenants on row crop areas.

His soils are mostly alluvial or outwash with coarse textures. Wind erosion low organic matter levels, and drought are major concerns on the outwash soils. The practices

mentioned above have helped to mitigate these issues. They have reduced sedimentation into the streams from erosion. They have trapped sediment during periods of flooding along the Smith Ditch.

The annual River Friendly Farmer award ceremony recognizes farmers for their implementation of conservation practices, like no-till and cover crops, which ultimately protect waterways and improve water quality in Indiana. These farmers were nominated by their local Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

Sponsored by Indiana Farm Bureau, the River Friendly Farmer Award program began in 2000 and has honored more than 1,000 Indiana farms.

This year the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts hosted the event and Hettmansperger opened the ceremony and remarks were made by Randy Kron, Indiana Farm Bureau president; Jerry Raynor, Indiana state conservationist, Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS); and Trevor Laureys, director of soil conservation, Indiana State Department of Agriculture. Amie Simpson, Brownfield Ag News, emceed the ceremony.

Fulton and Pulaski County SWCDs joined to host workshop September 23 was the first cold day of the fall for Fulton and Pulaski counties. After three days of rain, sunshine arrived just in time for the Cover Crop Management and Equipment Workshop.

Sixty-seven people attended the event.

Live demonstrations of the Fulton SWCD’s roller/crimper and seeder were cancelled due to the previous three days of rain, however, the equipment was on site for those interested to see it, touch it and get their questions answered.

sion educator, “Cover Crops and Weed Seeds;” Jamie Scott, Kosciusko County SWCD supervisor, “Cover Crop Equipment and Methods to Manage Soil Health;” and Paul Pence, The Pence Group, “Benefits of Variety Stated Rye.” An exceptional in-the-field meal was catered by Jonesy’s Junction of Akron. The field day was sponsored by Conservation Cropping Systems Initiative, The Pence Group, Podell Farms, Channel Seed and New Holland Rochester.

The Indiana State Department of Agriculture and the State Soil Conservation Board awarded $789,825 in matching grant funds to 13 soil and water conservation districts and soil health organizations through the Clean Water Indiana program. Including the district’s matching contributions, a total of $1.6 million will be implemented to improve soil conservation and water quality initiatives.

“Water quality enhancements and soil conservation practices are so incredibly important for our world,” said Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, secretary of agriculture. “Without the local county soil and water conservation districts and our farmers, we couldn’t produce the amount of agriculture products that we do and care the for environment at the same time.

These grants are sure to increase soil organic matter and improve waterways for a lasting impact for years to come.”

The Clean Water Indiana program is administered by the state’s soil conservation board. The program, led by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture, provides financial assistance to landowners and conservation groups working to reduce runoff from nonpoint sources of water pollution, whether it’s on agricultural land, urban areas or eroding streambanks.

Once received, districts can use the funds to partner with other counties or address specific needs within their jurisdiction. Some examples include participating in a cost share program, hiring staff, providing technical as-

sistance, implementing cover crop incentive programs or increasing watershed capacity.

“These grants are an excellent way for soil and water conservation districts to get more soil conservation practices on the ground. But this work couldn’t be done without Hoosier farmers being so willing to implement new soil and water quality protection initiatives on their farms,” said Bruce Kettler, director of the Indiana State Department of Agriculture.

“These funding opportunities are a great way for districts to fund the help or resources they need, while still keeping farmers and soil conservation top of mind.”

Amy Burris is chair of the State Soil Conservation Board and is looking forward to seeing the work done on the grassroots level by the soil and water districts.

“Soil conservation and water quality improvements are not made by a single individual, they are executed by many different individuals and partnerships, including our local soil and water districts and farmers,” Burris said.

“These partners rely on Clean Water Indiana funds to make improvements at the local level which, in turn, helps our state achieve its conservation goals. I look forward to seeing each awarded project come to life and I encourage districts with a conservation need to apply next grant cycle.”

Clean Water Indiana is managed by ISDA’s Division of Soil Conservation and funded by a portion of the state’s cigarette tax.

Fulton County SWCD joins UWIN to tackle invasives along Nickel Plate Trail Sunshine and fall colors made for an exceptional backdrop for the Weed Wrangle as the Upper Wabash Invasives Network tackled invasives along the Nickel Plate Trail Saturday, Oct. 23. Mandi Glanz, resource specialist of Southern Indiana Cooperative Invasives Management, presented Austin Prater his award for the “2021 SICIM Weed Wrangler of the Year” before the wrangling began.

Dugan Julian, northeast regional specialist of SICIM, educated the group of the invasives to remove and treat. Twenty-one volunteers tackled bush honeysuckle, autumn olive and tree of heaven on the trail.

Wabash, Miami and Huntington counties make up the UWIN, an educational conservation group dedicated to the stewardship of native habitats. Others participating in the work day included members of Nickel Plate TrailIndiana, Soil and Water Conservation Districts from Fulton, Miami and Wabash counties and a Master Gardner group from Wabash County among others.

New district conservationist for Fulton County The USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service selected an experienced conservationist skilled in natural resource management to serve as the new district conservationist for Fulton County.

Andrea Baker, who most recently served as the conservation program technician for Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District, started her new position April 12. Her predecessor, Dan Rosswurm, retired after serving Fulton County for more than 35 years.

“For the past nine years, I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of agricultural producers in Kosciusko County,” Baker explained. “That includes everyone from small vegetable gardeners and woodlot owners to large scale construction managers. As the new district conservationist, I plan to continue the work with existing clients, increase participation from new clients and help find innovative ways to address natural resource concerns on their farms. I am really looking forward to working with our partners in Fulton County and our neighboring counties as well.”

Baker said NRCS would continue to work closely with the Fulton County Soil & Water Conservation District and other local agencies to help agricultural producers and private landowners address natural resources in Fulton County.

Baker grew up in Kosciusko County and received a bachelor’s degree in environmental science/biology from Manchester College in 2012. She began working with Kosciusko SWCD in June 2012. While at Kosciusko SWCD, Baker had the opportunity to work with many different organizations and programs, including The Watershed
