By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Psalm Patrick Ingle is four months old this month. Yet, he’s already helped make two families who lost children one “family,” as his mother Brittany Ingle said.

Psalm is the son of Brittany and Shane Ingle of Akron. In October 2018, their three children, Alivia Stahl and twins Mason and Xzavier Ingle, were killed in a bus stop accident on SR 25 outside Rochester.

Psalm was born via a gestational surrogate, Keri Fox of Warsaw. She’s no stranger to the pain of losing a child; her son, Gidieon Cook, was killed in a car accident outside Harrison Elementary School in Warsaw in June 2019.

connected due to their similar losses, said Fox. “In June 2019, my friend told me that (Brittany) wanted to connect because she knows my pain and she knows what I’m going through,” said Fox. Fox didn’t hesitate to volunteer to be a surrogate three years later after she saw a Facebook post her friend shared from Brittany about Brittany looking for someone to carry a baby.

Brittany noted she and Shane started wanting another child a few years after their children were killed.

“My husband and I went through the grieving process, and we were just really lonely,” said Brittany.

She mentioned her home is a lot quieter than without the

three kids, especially since the couple’s oldest child, Selena Stahl, has gotten older and is out of the house a lot.

Brittany checked in 2021 to see if she could still have a baby, but an earlier medical procedure kept her from carrying a child.

A doctor suggested that Brittany check to see if any of her friends or family could be a gestational surrogate for her and Shane, but she knew that wasn’t possible.

“I mourned that for a year because to me and my husband that was another loss, like officially getting the news that I could never carry or go through that pregnancy, everything with your spouse,” said Brittany.

Library director loves her exciting job filled with books, DVDs and activities for patrons

By LAURIE LECHLITNER Staff Writer “I love my job as director of the Fulton County Public Library,” stated Andrea Stineback. “There’s always something new and exciting at the library. Not only do we have the usual things like books and DVDs, but we also have activities including crafts, painting classes, teen programs, story time, and so much more.”

Stineback earned an English degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, with a minor in music studies. “Some of my favorite classes covered rock and roll history,” she said. “The Beatles class was amazing.”

Stineback has worked at the library for 16 years. She started her FCPL career as a circulation clerk at the Aubbee Branch in Leiters Ford, which is Stineback’s hometown. She eventually took on Teen Services at the Rochester Branch and was later promoted to Reference/Adult Services Librarian, all while working on her master’s degree in library science from IUPUI. Stineback has been the library director since May 2016.

When asked about a typical day, she replied, “Every day is different. Some days I am getting things ready for the monthly board meeting; other days I am focused on checking in with staff and problem solving. There are days I am out in the community working on projects and attending meetings. I love that my job gives me the opportunity to help improve the community.”

She considers the library staff its greatest resource. “I could not do my job without the library’s excellent staff. They are patron-oriented and knowledgeable. If you are looking for something, they are willing to go the extra mile to help.”

Stineback is excited about a new project she has been working

on with Lindsay Barts from The Ladybug Foundation. “We both worked diligently to gain funding to get Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library up and running in Fulton County. Every child that signs up will receive a free book in the mail monthly from birth until their 5th birthday. Lindsay and I are so thankful for the support we’ve received.”

As part of the Fulton County Leadership Academy, Stineback and her group decided to install StoryWalks in Fulton County. “Our first StoryWalk was installed at the Woodlawn Hospital trail and our second one is in Kewanna. Our future plans include StoryWalks in Leiters Ford and Talma.”

StoryWalks allow families the opportunity to exercise while reading. “The book pages are placed in metal frames and are installed on posts along a trail. Each panel features an activity prompt that gets people to engage with the story.” The first bilingual book Senorita Mariposa is featured at the Woodlawn StoryWalk. It takes readers through the life cycle and migration of the Monarch butterfly.

Each book will rotate to the other StoryWalk locations.

On the home front in Rochester, Stineback is engaged to Timothy Roe. They have two greyhounds, Rosie and Lily. They also have two felines: a black cat named One and a creamsicle tabby named Pip, short for Pippi Longstocking.

Stineback loves to cook, bake, hike, and visit botanical gardens. She is also the assistant treasurer for Fulton County Habitat for Humanity.

Stineback concluded, “If you haven’t been to the library recently, stop in and see some of our new offerings. I think you will be pleasantly surprised to find that the library has become a dynamic place where the community can grow and learn together.”

RON wast slain, PURKEY and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation.” (Revelation 5:9) First, Isaiah continues his theme, in the Old Testiment, of light and darkness (Isaiah 8:20-22) by announcing, “There will be no more gloom” (Isaian 9:1, niv). The redeemer will come and bring to the world the dawning of a new day (verse 2; Luke 1:78-79; John 8:12). We know that this prophecy refers to Jesus Christ because of the way it is quoted in Matthew 4:13-15. The geographical areas named in Isaiah 9:1 were especially devastated when the Assyrian army moved in, but these ar-

eas would be especially honored by the ministry of the Messiah. Jesus was identified with “Galilee of the Gentiles” (Matthew 4:15, niv), and his loving ministry to the people brought light and joy.

Second, the prophet Isaiah looked beyond the first coming of Christ to his second coming and the establishing of his righteous kingdom (Isaiah 9:3-7).

Instead of protecting a small remnant, God would enlarge the nation.

Instead of experiencing sorrow, the people would rejoice like reapers after a great harvest, soldiers after a great victory (see Judges 6-7), or prisoners of war after being released from their yoke of bondage.

Of course, some of this occurred when God defeated Assyria and delivered Jerusalem (Isaiah 37).

But the ultimate fulfillment is still future; all military material will be destroyed (Isaiah 9:5) because the nations will not learn war any more (Isaiah 2:4).

Third, Isaiah 9:6 declares both the humanity (“A Child is born”) and the deity (“A Son is given”) of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The prophet then leaps ahead to the Kingdom Age when Messiah will reign in righteousness and justice from David’s throne. God had prom-

ised David that his dynasty and throne would be established forever (2 Samuel 7:16); and this is fulfilled literally in Jesus Christ (Luke 1:3233; Zechariah 9:9), who will one day reign from Jerusalem (Isaiah 11:15; Jeremiah 23:5-8; 30:8-10). This kingdom is called “the Millennium,” which means “one thousand years.”

The phrase is used six times in Revelation 20.

Fourth, if his name is “wonderful,” then there will be nothing dull about his reign! As counselor, he has the wisdom to rule justly; and as the Mighty God, he has the power to execute his wise plans. “Everlasting Father” does not suggest that the Son is also the Father, for each person in the Godhead is distinct.

“Father of Eternity” is a better translation. Among the Jews, the word “father” means “originator” or “source.” For example, Satan is the “father (originator) of lies” (John 8:44, niv). If you want anything eternal, you must get it from Jesus Christ; he is the “Father of eternity.” The Lord Jesus Christ is the redeemer; the savior of the world!

Baby Psalm Continued from page 1 In 2022, Brittany contacted Family Choice Surrogacy in Fishers.

She then put a post on Facebook inquiring about women who wished to be surrogates, which led to Fox carrying Psalm.

Brittany said everything “fell into place” perfectly.

“I went from not even thinking this was going to be possible to someone so perfect came along who understood what I was grieving,” said Brittany.

The proximity of the two women’s homes meant Brittany could interact with Fox throughout the pregnancy.

“I got to really spend that pregnancy with her and bond with her even more. We did a lot of lunches and appointments,” said Brittany.

Psalm was conceived after an embryo transfer in January 2023.

“Everything happened so quickly and beautifully,” said Brittany. “It came in God’s time. I truly believe that.”

Fox said her due date with Psalm was Oct. 3, one day before what would have been Gidieon’s 13th birthday. It also fell during the same month as the five-year anniversary of Alivia, Mason and Xzavier’s deaths.

“It was just like everything was meant to happen the way it happened,” said Fox. “He was born Sept. 25, a day before my birthday,” said Brittany of Psalm.

Psalm’s first name comes from the Bible verse Psalm 119:105. It reads: “Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

The verse was on a dog tag, which Brittany helped Mason pick out to wear the day he passed away.

Fulton County Coroner Jeri Good found the dog tag and gave it back to the Ingles.

Psalm’s middle name is Patrick, the same as Xzavier’s.

Brittany noted she could have turned away from God after her kids passed away.

She ended up discovering the sermons of Pastor Steven Furtick of Elevation Church on YouTube.

“I just started listening and listening and I started leaning more on God and literally, that church, that man saved my life because I literally had a different outlook.

He made me see things differently,” said Brittany.

“And God has been with me the whole way,” she added.

She talked about the “blessings” she has now including baby Psalm and the MAXSTRONG Law, created by former State Sen. Randy Head, which enacted stricter penalties for drivers, who pass school buses, with their stop arms out.

“I think that there’s a reason for everything in God’s plan ... and I want to inspire people that God is truly the way through the darkness,” said Brittany.

She said Keri and her are “family” now.

“We still do holidays together and it’s amazing. It’s so amazing; so I got not only a baby, but an entire family to go with it,” Brittany said.

She called surrogacy “beautiful” and encouraged women to do it if they could.

“There is nothing more beautiful than someone who goes out of their way to make life beautiful for others,” said Brittany.

She noted she can trust Fox to babysit if needed.

“We both lost our only sons and now we get to go through this together raising Psalm,” said Brittany.

She says she is already starting

Brittany notes she can see parts of the three kids in Psalm.

“He’s a perfect mix of all three of them,” she said. “He has Alivia’s big smile and always smiling, but playing with him ... I can kind of see a peek of the boys in him.”

“That is kind of hard sometimes because as much as a blessing as he is ... it doesn’t take away the pain of my kids being gone everyday,” added Brittany. “I still so very much hurt for them.”

As a result, Brittany is “still calling for national bus safety (legislation),” she said, as laws are different all over the nation.

“If I could make MAXSTRONG a standard law across the 50 states, I think that would be great. I really want to push for that,” said Brittany.

As for Fox, she’s honored Gidieon by creating the Gidieon Orion Cook Memorial Fund through the Kosciusko County Community Foundation in honor of her son. The fund gives to a variety of community needs in Kosciusko County.

Fox said giving birth to Psalm and seeing him with the Ingles has helped her “heal a little bit” after Gidieon’s death.

“It’s never going to go away, but it’s always nice to see them smiling ... because I’ve always wanted to make Gidieon proud, and I think this is something that would have made him proud,” said Fox.

Obituaries William Thomas Jenkins

Willliam Thomas Jenkins, 88, Winamac, died at 2:15 a.m.

Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, in Pulaski Healthcare Center, Winamac.

He was born on Dec. 29, 1935. On April WILLIAM 29, 1972, he THOMAS married FaJENKINS falene HowardKolish; who survives.

Additional survivors are his children, Melissa (Josh) Behny, Fishers, Susan (Jeff) Foust, Rochester, and Mark (Diane) Kolish, Winamac; daughter-in-law, Linda Kolish, Winamac; sister, Betty (Harry) DePoy, Winamac; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Esther Thomas Jenkins; stepsons, Kevin Kolish, and William Kolish; brother, Robert Jenkins; and grandson, Liam Behny.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 27, in the Opera House, Winamac, with Pastor Hagin Hiatt officiating.

Friends may visit one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Winamac Fire Department.

Michael J. Samuels, 67, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024.

He was born on Feb. 23, 1956.

He is survived by his former wife, Charlotte Samuels; sons, MICHAEL J. James (Brooke) SAMUELS Samuels, Troy, Ohio, Joshua (Alysha) Samuels, Rochester, and Johnathan (Shannon) Samuels, Mentone; father, James Kruyer Sr., Plymouth; sisters, Amme (Larry) Girten, Plymouth, Julee Samuels-Alderfer, Rochester, Lorre Samuels-Osborn, and Emyle (Mike) Kruyer-Collins, Plymouth; brother, Jim (Laura) Kruyer Jr., Plymouth; and eleven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerald and Patsy (Kain) Samuels.

Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in First United Church of Christ, 321 N. Center St. Plymouth, IN 46563.

A memorial service will immediately follow, with Pastor Charles Krieg officiating.

Interment will be held in New Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth.

Virgina Ruth (Urbin) Guttman

Virginia Ruth (Urbin) Guttman, 93, Wakarusa, formerly of Kewanna, died at 1:45 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, in Elkhart General Hospital.

She was born on April 6, 1930.

On Dec. 19, VIRGINA 1954, she marRUTH (URBIN) ried Dr. John B. GUTTMAN Guttman, who preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 2006.

She is survived by one son, John R. (Becky) Guttman, Granger; two daughters, Bebe Yoder, Hailey, Idaho, and Cindy (Brian) Buckles, Green Bay, Wis.; eight grandchildren; and six greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Bertha (Metzger) Urbin; daughter, Amy Guttman; and brother, Robert Urbin.

Visitation will be held from 3-6 p.m.

Friday, Feb. 16, in Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Wakarusa, and 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at Wakarusa United Methodist Church where services will begin at 11 a.m. with Pastor Scott Mann officiating.

Burial will following in Olive West Cemetery, Wakarusa.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that friends and family continue her legacy of supporting her community.

Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Wakarusa United Methodist Church, to provide preschool scholarships, or to the Wakarusa Public Library.

Josephine Ellen Krasienko, 97, Huntington, and formerly of Fulton County, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024, in her home.

She was born on March 24, JOELLEN 1926. On July KRASIENK 21, 1951, she married Chester Andrew Krasienko; who preceded her in death on March 12, 2008.

She is survived by her children, Mary F. (Michael) Hahn, John T. (Terri) Krasienko, Jane E. (Mark) Trabert; sister, Georgeann Schnurr; brothers, Bill Shanley, and Tom (Linda) Shanley; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and anticipating one more in the next months.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George “Kelly” and Anna C. (Hepp) Shanley; sister, Mary C. Shanley; and brother, John Shanley.

Visitation will be held from 1:30-5 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 28, in DeMoneyGrimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Dr., Columbia City, with a rosary prayer starting at 1 p.m.

INDOT raises cap awards

By LESLIE BONILLA MUNIZ Indiana Capital Chronicle The Indiana Department of Transportation has raised the cap on its popular Community Crossings Matching Grant program to $1.5 million from $1 million.

Local government advocates said they’re grateful for the award bump and program generally, but want to tweak how it’s structured.

INDOT Spokeswoman Natalie Garrett said the higher cap is, for now, a pilot for 2024’s two calls for projects. The first is due Wednesday, Jan. 31.

“The increase is based on current and projected gas tax and (electric vehicle and) hybrid registration revenue earmarked for Community Crossings. INDOT will reassess the pilot program at the end of 2024,” she told the Capital Chronicle via email.

Garrett said she couldn’t provide a specific dollar amount for the Community Crossings funds available in 2024 versus the year prior. She cited fluctuations in gas tax and registration numbers.

Advocates favored the boost.

“We certainly don’t want to see any of the tax dollars invested into the program go unspent this year when there are always infrastructure needs across all 92 counties,” said Ryan Hoff, the Association of Indiana Counties’ director of government affairs and its general counsel.

“If there is funding available even at the higher cap amount to meet the amounts requested by local governments, then let’s get that money invested in infrastructure as was intended,” he added, via email.

Jenna Bentley, government affairs director for Accelerate Indiana Municipalities, called the program “transformational for the state” in an interview.

But — “Increasing the cap, it’ll be interesting to see who’s able to take advantage of that,” she said.

The program, launched in 2016, provides funding to local units of government across Indiana for road and bridge projects.

Cities and towns with populations below 10,000 people must put up 25% of project costs and the state will furnish a 75% match. If they’ve got more than 10,000 people, it’s a 50-50 deal.

Similarly, counties with less than 50,000 people must pay 25% and those with above 50,000 must pony up 50%.

“I think (the higher cap) will help larger communities, which have been asking for additional funding … That $1 million cap is just potentially a drop in the bucket of their overall funding needs,” Bentley said.

“But smaller communities, you know, I had a call with some city engineers. I don’t think very many will be able to take advantage of that $1.5 million cap,” she added.

It took one of her organization’s member communities — a town of 500 — about seven years to save up for a 25% project match.

When, how and where to file taxes If you’re a calendar year filer and your tax year ends Dec. 31, the due date for filing your federal individual income tax return is generally April 15 of each year.

If you use a fiscal year, tax year ending on the last day of any month other than December, your return is due on or before the 15th day of the fourth month after the close of your fiscal year.

If your due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the due date is moved to the next business day.

Your return is considered filed on time if the envelope is properly addressed, has enough postage, is postmarked, and is deposited in the mail by the due date. If you file electronically, the date and time in your time zone when your return is transmitted controls whether your return is filed timely. You will later receive an electronic acknowledgment that the IRS has accepted

your electronically filed return.

If you cannot file by the due date of your return, you should request an extension of time to file. To receive an automatic, six-month extension of time to file your return, you can file Form 4868.

File your extension request by the due date of your return. An extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay, so you’ll owe interest if the tax you owe isn’t paid by the original due date of your return. You may also be subject to a late-payment penalty on any tax not paid by the original due date of your return.

How To File You may want to file your return electronically. You’ll usually receive your refund within three weeks of the date when the IRS receives your return, even faster if you elect to have it directly deposited into your checking or savings account.

Most professional tax return pre-

parers offer electronic filing of tax returns with their return preparation services and may charge a fee to file your return electronically.

Also, when you prepare your return yourself using tax-preparation software, you may have to pay a fee to file your return electronically.

However, you may qualify for free electronic filing through Free File, irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free.

If you mail a paper Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR, it can take six weeks to process. For delays, check current IRS operations and services, irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operationsstatus-of-mission-critical-functions.

Be sure to attach: • A copy of all forms W-2 and any other applicable forms to the front of your return.

• Related schedules and forms behind your return in the order of the sequence number located in the upper right-hand corner of the

schedule or form.

• Form W-2c (a corrected form W-2) if received; attach a copy of both your original forms W-2 and any forms W-2c.

• Form W-2G and form 1099-R, if there was federal income tax withheld.

Tombaugh Research Center contains numerous historical military items

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Preserving history is in John Tombaugh’s blood.

His late parents, Jean and Fulton County Judge Wendell Tombaugh, did much to document genealogical records in the county.

Tombaugh is doing his part to keep history alive by running the Tombaugh Research Center. It contains numerous historical military items from the U.S. and around the world.

The museum, which opened in 2019, is located at Tombaugh’s home at 5009 Beaman Lane, Rochester.

He said his interest in military history stems from his own background.

“When I was 15, I joined the Civil Air Patrol,” he said. “Then I got older and got out of it, but then I went into the military.”

Tombaugh is assisted by his friend, Gerald Hibner, who serves as caretaker for the museum.

Hibner said the museum exists “to preserve and educate the upcoming generations on what people had sacrificed for the freedoms that they’re now enjoying.”

The museum has a tank, a ship radar antenna, and all manner of firearms.

“We have uniforms from ... the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, all the modern wars,” said Tombaugh.

There’s also a World War I German helmet, German and Japanese machine guns and numerous arrowheads.

He has also displayed some nonmilitary items, including a dinosaur egg, fossils, petrified wood and his cane, Coca-Cola and hot sauce collections.

He’s still adding to the museum.

“We’re always finding something new,” Tombaugh said. “I’ve been going at this at auctions and yard sales for 50 years, and I find kids today don’t know what grandpa’s medals are for and they don’t want them.”

INDOT Continued from page 4 may struggle to make the higher 50% match, as opposed to communities with hundreds of thousands of people.

Many communities in recent years have used federal pandemic-era dollars to afford matches.

But that money must be obligated by the end of 2024 and spent by the end of 2026.

Bentley floated the idea of lowering the match for smaller units of government at a November meeting of a key two-year road funding task force.

The Association of Indiana Counties has also noted the program’s short timelines complicate bridge projects, takes longer to develop.

Counties are responsible for all bridges over 20 feet in length.

Hoff wrote that he anticipated the task force would continue analyzing the program’s parameters in its future hearings.

Community Crossings has become a focus for the task force, which must come up with longterm transportation funding solutions.

The program’s fund could become flush with cash if electric and hybrid vehicle registrations rise. Since those vehicles use less or no gasoline, the state’s main road fund would miss out.

The task force will likely begin meeting again after the ongoing legislative session concludes in March.

House sends intra-industry mixed beverage fight to Senate

By LESLIE BONILLA MUNIZ Indiana Capital Chronicle The Indiana House of Representatives Tuesday, Jan. 16, approved legislation — for the second year in a row — letting beer wholesalers sell liquor-based ready-todrink cocktails.

“The lines between suppliers are a lot more fuzzy than they

used to be. Consumer tastes are changing and so is the industry along with them,” author Rep. Ethan Manning, R-Logansport, said on the floor.

He said House Bill 1025 “creates competition within the wholesale tier where (it) does not currently exist.”

Indiana operates on a three-tier alcohol system — the manufactur-

er, the wholesaler and the retailer.

State law provides for combined wholesale licenses — beer and wine, or liquor and wine — but generally doesn’t allow crossover.

Manufacturers, however, are increasingly crossing those lines as they cash in on a mixed-cocktail boom.

The bill would put liquor-based mixed beverages under a wine

license, allowing beer wholesalers to sell them. In exchange, it removes a 1 million gallon cap on the quantity of flavored malt beverages liquor wholesalers can vend.

But liquor wholesalers have argued that the change lets beer wholesalers into their territory without giving them comparable access in return. Several said they

do not sell any amount of flavored malt beverages at a committee hearing last week.

The House voted to approve the bill in a 74-20 vote. Thirteen of the votes were from Manning’s fellow Republicans.

The House passed the same legislation 77-21 last session. It died in the Senate when it wasn’t heard in committee.

Churchill hired as new TVSC communications director

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer The Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. has a new director of communications, marketing and grants.

At its regular meeting KIIRA Monday, Jan. CHURCHILL 15, at Burket Educational Center, the TVSC Board hired Kiira Churchill for the position.

She replaces Lori TildenGeiger, who JESSICA has taken a job as volunteer MCFARLAND coordinator for the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum.

Churchill has spent the last two years as director of development for Combined Community Services in Warsaw. Prior to that, she said she worked for Mission Point Community Church in Kosciusko County overseeing “their missions and their vulnerable child population that they serve through the church.”

Churchill grew up attending Warsaw Community Schools, but noted her children go to Valley. Her kids are 10, 8 and 6.

“We love it here, and I’m excited to get to work and be able to showcase what Valley is doing and write some grants,” she said.

McFarland Leaving The board also accepted the resignation of TVSC Treasurer Jessica McFarland.

McFarland is leaving to take a job in Wa-Nee Community Schools. She spent 11 years as Valley’s treasurer.

Before the board voted to accept McFarland’s resignation, Board Member Tom Bauters spoke.

“I just want to thank Jessica for your professionalism and … your expertise,” he said. “You went after every dollar for us, and we’re very, very fortunate to have the skills that you’ve had.”

“I know I’m speaking on behalf of everyone here, but we really appreciate you. Thank you,” Bauters continued.

In other business, the board: • Postponed hearing its annual update on Burket and honoring the corporation’s Indiana Association of School Principals’ Rising Stars of Indiana Class of 2025, due to the weather. Those will happen at a later date.

• Accepted a $3,000 Project Lead the Way grant for Mentone Elementary School, which will be used for teacher training.

• Accepted a $50 donation to Burket from the Tippecanoe Valley High School Class of 1983 in memory of one of its members Jim Shanes’ mother, Barbara Shanes.

• Approved the hiring of Mentone school cook Michelle Skiles.

Day’s death leaves ‘big void’ in Akron community

By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer The death of resident Joseph “Joe” Day has left “a big void” in the Akron community, said Megan Meinert.

Meinert was one of several people who shared about Day, who passed away Jan. 13 in town. The owner of Day Hardware, the former Henry Township fire chief was 72.

Meinert said she first got to know Day when she asked if she could work in Day Hardware when she was 15.

“It was such a blessing to me to spend my youth growing up in the hardware store,” said Meinert, who worked there for seven years.

She called Day “a father figure to a lot of the youth.”

It was Day who bought Meinert her first cellphone when she left for college.

He also gifted her a pocketknife when she got married, which had belonged to his late son, Patrick.

Meinert called the gift “very special.”

She recalled Day’s knack for retaining knowledge, which fellow Day Hardware employee Jim Saner also remembered.

Saner said Day could recite the

presidents of the United States in order along with each one’s vice president. Due to Day’s presidential knowledge, Meinert said she would try to quiz him each President’s Day. Saner said Day shared his passion for music.

“We always tried to stump each other” on music trivia, said Saner.

He noted Day “read a lot” and knew much about history, including that of the town.

“He was a very smart individual, very confident and very witty,” said Saner of Day. Another employee in Day Hardware’s “family-type environment” as Meinert referred to it, was Linda Backus.

She described Day as being “very caring, generous, considerate and bull-headed.”

Day also “had a big passion” for the Henry Township Fire Department, said Saner.

A representative with the fire department said Day worked to bring new tools in, like getting the Jaws of Life for not only Henry Township, but other area fire departments.

“He was always trying to be innovative,” the representative said.

The representative also said Day “liked passing on all his knowledge” to younger firefighters.

Day “was a people person definitely,” said Saner.

Lori Tilden-Geiger, who co-owns The Grounded Coffee House at The Depot with her husband, DeLynn, said Day was a regular at the business right next door to Day Hardware.

“We looked forward to him coming in every day at the same time before he got started for the day,” said Tilden-Geiger. “Every single day, he had a question, a joke, a story or some trivia.”

She noted Day’s “first customer of the day would sometimes have to come get him from the coffee house.”

Day once told Tilden-Geiger he was sad when the coffee house was closed on Thursdays because he wasn’t able to come in.

“This man was a wealth of knowledge and just so interesting,” said Tilden-Geiger. “His love for the town of Akron and its people were unwavering.”

Meinert recalled the last time she saw Day not too long ago.

She said she hugged him and told him to “have a good day” as she left.

Meinert said his reply was one he would give when someone would wish him “a good day.” “’I am a good Day,’” Meinert said he replied.

January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month Every year since 2010, the president of the United States has proclaimed January “National Human Trafficking Prevention Month” and reaffirmed the United States government’s commitment to combating human trafficking in all its forms.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Indiana joins in this commitment and will continue to prioritize combating forced labor, domestic servitude, and sex trafficking of children and adults throughout the district.

“A crucial and necessary step in combating human trafficking is recognizing potential trafficking situations and taking the further step of reporting these activities to law enforcement,” said Clifford D. Johnson, Northern District of Indiana United States Attorney. “My office is committed to working with its state and local partners both in law enforcement and through non-governmental organizations, advocacy groups, trauma-informed service providers and community leaders to support victims, prevent trafficking where possible, and prosecute those who are engaging in human trafficking. We are most effective in addressing these situations when the community joins with us to recognize and report ‘red flags,’ which may indicate a trafficking situation. We encourage the public to join us in rooting out these crimes, not only during this month of recognition, but each and every day.”

Below are a few questions that can help identify whether a potential sex trafficking or labor trafficking situation is occurring.

• Has the victim been forced or coerced into performing commercial sex acts?

• Is the victim under the age of 18 and engaged in commercial sex?

• Is the victim free to contact friends or family without being coached or monitored?

• Is someone severely limiting the victim’s freedom of movement?

• Has the victim or their family been threatened with harm if they attempt to leave?

• Has the victim been harmed, deprived of food, water, sleep, medical care, or other life necessities?

• Is the victim in possession of their own travel and/or identification documents?

• Are the victim’s wages being unlawfully garnished to pay off a debt or fee?

• Is the victim allowed to socialize or attend religious services?

• Has the victim been threatened with deportation or criminal charges?

If a situation arises where the answer to one or more of the above questions is “yes”, the U.S. Attorney’s Office asks that you to join in the effort to combat human trafficking and report the information.

If you are a victim of human trafficking, suspect you know one or have seen a situation you think may involve trafficking, contact the FBI at (800) CALLFBI, the National Human Trafficking Hotline at (888) 373-7888 or text HELP or INFO to BeFree (233733) or your local law enforcement.

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 911. If you believe a child is involved in a trafficking situation, submit a tip through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s Call Center at (800) THE-LOST (800) 843-5678).

Indiana lawmakers seem unlikely to tackle school consolidation in 2024 session

By CASEY SMITH Indiana Capital Chronicle A new statewide report is fueling discussions about consolidating Indiana’s smallest school districts, but state lawmakers continue to lack an appetite for action.

For years, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce has asked the General Assembly to move legislation encouraging school districts with fewer than 2,000 students to consolidate.

Small and rural school officials are pushing back against the new study and potential for Indiana policies requiring small schools to increase student population.

The newest report highlights lagging academic performance in the state’s smallest schools and pushes to consolidate at least some of the state’s rural schools.

Although the latest study dropped just before the start of the 2024 session, the issue of school consolidation doesn’t seem to be on policymakers’ radars.

So far, none of the roughly 700 bills filed deal with consolidation. One proposal addresses the distribution of local income taxes after school districts merge.

The chamber maintains conversations about consolidation and other reforms to improve performance at small and rural

schools need to start now; cutting the number of small districts in half will help increase educational attainment in Indiana.

The School Corporation Reorganization Act of 1959 led to a significant decrease in the number of districts across Indiana.

The 2007 Kernan-Shepard government streamlining report recommended districts smaller than 2,000 students consolidate.

Lawmakers sent $200,000 to the Indiana Department of Education for school corporations to conduct consolidation feasibility studies.

This led to the consolidation of two districts into western Indiana’s North Central Parke Community School Corporation.

Consolidation efforts in other parts of the state have been unsuccessful.

The last serious push for school consolidation came in 2017, when a separate study produced similar findings.

Researchers noted school corporation size impacted nearly every measure of student performance studied.

Indiana lawmakers responded with a one-time financial incentive of $250 per student to schools wanting to consolidate.

Other studies have shown that around 2,000 students is the minimum for school corporations in Indiana to support adequate student performance.

About 74% of the 162 districts with less than 2,000 students saw declining enrollments in last decade.

The chamber’s 2024 study emphasized increasing school corporation size to around 2,000 students has the potential to reduce per pupil cost and free up funds for classroom instruction.

The chamber study showed students in districts with enrollment between 500 and 999 students earn the highest percentage of academic honors diplomas, compared to all other districts.

Indiana’s small and rural school corporations currently operate 32 early-college high schools enabling students to complete the Indiana College Core or an associate degree before graduation.

Additionally, the chamber study fails to illustrate adequate data about charter schools, which would have been the lowest performing group of schools in the state had they been analyzed the same as small, rural schools.

The average enrollment in a Hoosier charter school is 436 students. There’s only five school corporations in the state with enrollment below 500 students.

Many families in rural Indiana oppose consolidation because it often means longer commute times in order to attend a school on the opposite side of a county.

Local tax rate implications are also a major drawback. Consolidation of districts may impose a higher tax rate on some residents of the new district.

Indiana’s “$1 law,” allowing charters to acquire traditional public school buildings for almost nothing from districts with significant declines in enrollment, could take away from any local savings gleaned from consolidation.

When schools in rural areas close because of declining population, the buildings can reopen soon after as charter schools.

The chamber’s 2035 economic development plan includes goals to improve student performance by merging small districts, sharing services and increasing online access to courses.

The chamber supports alternatives to consolidation increasing academic performance.

Rochester winter sports update: Wrestling wins 4th straight TRC title The Rochester boys wrestling team scored 242.5 points to win its fourth consecutive Three Rivers Conference title at Maconaquah SaturBy VAL day.

TSOUTSOURIS Rochester Guest Writer had five individual weight class champions: Layne Horn (126), Wyatt Davis (150), Brant Beck (165), Alex Deming (215), and Brady Beck (HWT).

All five of Rochester’s individual champions are ranked in the top 20 in the state in their weight classes, according to IndianaMat.com.

Horn, Brant Beck, Deming and Brady Beck are all undefeated on the season.

Brady Beck won his fourth consecutive TRC title.

After receiving a bye, Horn needed only 1:12 of mat time to win his two matches by fall and win his title.

Rochester travels to Plymouth for the sectional this Saturday.

Rochester has won three consecutive sectionals, though those sectionals were held at Peru. Rochester has been reassigned to the Plymouth sectional for this season.

Girls Basketball Ella McCarter scored 12 points, and Aubrey Wilson added 11, but the Rochester girls basketball team lost to Manchester 55-47 Saturday.

Jadyn Field added eight before fouling out with 3:37 left. Rylee Clevenger hit a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and scored seven.

The game featured seven lead changes in the fourth quarter, the last coming on Brookelynn Buzzard’s 3-pointer with four minutes left to give Manchester a 46-43 lead.

Buzzard hit six 3-pointers and scored a game-high with 23 points.

Rochester would get within 5047 on a Brailyn Hunter free throw with 45.7 seconds left, but the Lady Squires made five of six free throws in the final 36.9 seconds to close the game out.

Rochester fell to 10-10, 5-2. The loss drops Rochester to fourth place in the conference behind Lewis Cass (7-0), Whitko (7-1) and Manchester.

The 2004 Class 2A state championship team was honored on the occasion of its 20th anniversary with a meet-and-greet before the game and a pre-game ceremony on the court. All but four players returned

for the ceremony.

Courtney Felke, who was not present, was honored for being the school’s all-time scoring leader with 1,707 points.

Boys Basketball Bryce Baugher scored a careerhigh 19 points to lead three players in double figures as the Rochester boys basketball team knocked off Caston 60-43 Saturday afternoon.

Tanner Reinartz added 15, and Dylan Hook had a career-high 10 off the bench.

Rochester improved to 5-6.

Baugher, a junior forward, had eight points during the run, including a layup in transition, a 3-point play off a spinning layup and another 3-point play in transition.

Caston got within nine in the third quarter, holding Rochester scoreless for the first 5:20 of the half.

This marked the first time since 2018 the home team had won the Rochester-Caston game. Caston had won its past two trips to Rochester in 2020 and 2022.

Rochester’s Drew Bowers scored a team-high 16. Tanner Reinartz added 13, and Carson Paulik had a career-high 12, including seven in the fourth quarter after Manchester had built a 27-point lead.

Rochester finished with 26 turnovers.

Swimming Led by sectional champions, Wes Steininger and Peyton Brooks, the Rochester boys swimming team scored 243 points and finished second out of six teams at the Three Rivers Conference meet Saturday.

The Rochester girls scored 108.5 points and finished fifth out of five teams.

In the girls meet, the highestfinishing Rochester swimmer was freshman Kylie Haselby.
