When folks consider how the coronavirus has touched lives, most likely people don’t think about performing groups so much, but the Fulton County Choral Club has been stringently affected.

After mandates took away practices and performances early in 2020, the fear of infections for many members in the “at risk” age group delayed their gathering until March 2021.

At that time, we tried spacing chairs and masking, which was not so successful. But we persevered and were able to attend their state organization’s (Melody Makers of Indiana) Festival performance in June 2021 in Plainfield. But there are bright spots for the club: Programs were given in October and December; a new accompanist has been found after losing the previous one in December 2018; an anonymous donor provided funds for the club to purchase a

keyboard and accessories for times when pianos aren’t available; and plans are underway for a program at Wynnfield Crossing early next year.

The club has been able to secure storage space and filing cabinets for our vast library of music at our practice location in the community building at the Fulton County 4-H Fairgrounds.

FCCC warmly thanks the fair board and Extension staff in their generosity in this endeavor.

The Choral Club practices from 6:30-8:30 p.m. the first, third and fifth Mondays at the 4-H Community Building. The parking and entrance is on the south side. On Saturday, April 2, we will be hosting the northern Indiana area rehearsal for Melody Makers and hope to begin planning for a 2022 Christmas show and 2023 spring show.

Editor’s note: The Indiana Extension Chorus was founded in 1934 by Albert P. Stewart. In 1936, the Fulton County Chorus began with Margaret Shaffer as director. The chorus has been a stable part of the Fulton County Extension program for many years. The club’s purpose is to provide the opportunity for musical expression and training for individual members with the opportunity for development of musical programs to provide to a variety of organizations such as health care facilities, retirement communities and local service organizations, as well as community functions.

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR John Deere enthusiast enjoys restoring and collecting %\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 )HDWXUH :ULWHU “Hey you think you can fix this?” is a common question asked of John Craig, tractor restoration aficionado.

With the help of his dad, Craig bought his first tractor in 1969; from that point on, he was hooked.

“Dad got me started. We did some together. His goal was to retire and work on old John Deere tractors and unfortunately, that wasn’t to be,” he said. “I’m what you call a collector. If the notion strikes me, I’ll do a restore for others.”

When Craig purchases tractors and equipment, most of them must be torn down, rebuilt, painted piece by piece and put back together.

“I take something that looks like nothing and I bring it back to life,” he said.

Since the parts are no longer available, he fabricates them.

Craig uses his machining, grinding, welding and cutting skills to make whatever part he may need to complete the job. And, what

little he doesn’t do himself, he outsources.

“I love going to a salvage yard, walking through and taking photos of originals,” Craig said.

“When you get back home and need to do something, you can always refer to the photo.”

Craig buys from individuals and has traveled as far south as Florida to make a purchase.

When asked what it takes to do a restoration, he laughed and said, “patience.” His longest project took a little more than two years to complete. Craig’s oldest restore was a 1937 L, which back then was the equivalent of replacing one horse.

Among his vast and interesting collection is a red John Deere 330U. From the 1950s through the 1960s, John Deere strayed from its classic green and yellow paint palette and had a handful of orange, yellow and red tractors.

Craig’s favorites aren’t the tractors themselves, but the equipment pulled behind the tractors.

His favorite restore is a yellow 1960 John Deere industrial earth mover. The first 63 were outsourced to Texas and built by

One of Craig’s most popular restore projects was orchard tractors. The popular tractors were made for the orchards and supplied an abundance of work for him.

“I’ve met a lot of great people as a result of orchard metal,” he said.

Craig has traveled all over to pick up restores and to share his treasures for others to enjoy. He has been to Florida, Georgia, New York, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Iowa and Illinois. Locally he has participated in the annual Mentone Egg Festival.

Before COVID, he would load seven to eight tractors on his semi and travel to various shows, meeting plenty of people and creating lasting memories.

Craig noted he does not do competitions, just shows. His goal is to keep it fun.

“When judging is involved, it tends to drive the young people out, and we need the youth to be

involved,” he said.

Not everything is a restore, though. Some of the items Craig comes across are left as is.

“If they are in good condition, you leave them alone,” he noted.

“They are only original one time.

If you find a good one, it’s worth more in its original state.

“John Deere’s been a good world to me.”

Talent show fundraiser in Rochester Michael and Dr. Caitlin Rich are hosting “A Heartfelt Talent Show” at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, in the Rochester High School auditorium. Proceeds will go to the Richs’ renovation of the Topps building at 501 Main St., Rochester.

Plans for the building include a venue capable of holding up to 400 people, rentable business

spaces, a conference center and rentable store fronts.

“We truly believe in this project helping continue to grow our Rochester downtown area as well as provide much needed rentable space for new businesses to be located,” said Dr. Rich.

Grandma Peggy Durkes, 88, Rochester, reunited with loved ones in heaven Sunday, Dec. 19, 2021.

Peggy, the daughter of Floyd and Ethel PetersLebo, was born Sept. 20, 1933, in Winamac. She married James Durkes, her high school sweetheart, Aug. 19, 1950, and raised five feisty children in Rochester.

Throughout her life, Peggy had fun camping, 3(**< '85.(6 spending holidays and enjoying time at the river cottage with family and friends, playing her cards right in various clubs and around the dining room table, collecting and sharing antiques, finding treasures for all at garage sales, avoiding pictures and doctor visits, making meals without recipes, caring for others, savoring her morning and afternoon coffee, never missing celebrations or forgetting birthdays and living life true to her values.

Peggy had an unmatched spirit, undeniable strength and unwavering heart for serving and loving others. She made a lot of a little and freely gave to her friends, community and church, and by spending precious time with and spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved her dearly.

Survivors include sister, Donna Smith of Rochester; brother, Bill Lebo of Gulfport, Miss.; children, Linda Hudkins (Bob) of Rochester, Sandy Callahan (Larry) of Fowler, Brenda Spencer (David) of Monticello and Timothy Durkes (Helen) of Rochester; son-in-law, Harold Costello of Morristown, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and two great-greatgrandchildren.

Peggy was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Patti Costello; two brothers, Donald and Gordon Lebo; and sister, Beverly Keesey.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 8, followed by services at Good Family Funeral Home in Rochester with burial immediately after at IOOF Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rochester First Baptist Fellowship Guild and the Fulton County Council on Aging. May Peggy’s beautiful soul forever be remembered and rest with God.

Velma Sue Rigney Former Caston Schools Employee Velma Sue Rigney, 81, Rochester, passed away at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022, at her residence.

She was born Dec. 8, 1940, in Fulton County, the daughter of Omer “Bob” and Sara “Hazel” (Rockey) Zartman. On April 30, 1960, in Fulton, she married James E. Rigney and he survives.

Mrs. Rigney had worked at Hart, Schaffner & 9(/0$ 68( Marx, Rochester, and spent 27 years working for Cas5,*1(< ton Schools, Fulton. She had attended the Fulton Baptist Temple and had been a member of the Blacktop Cruisers Car Club for more than 25 years. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening and working in her yard.

Survivors include her husband, James E. Rigney, Rochester; children, Dan (Michelle) Rigney, Macy, Dennis (Kimberly) Rigney, Rochester, and Shelly (Terry) Southerton, Kokomo; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Virginia Reed; and brothers, Von Mike Zartman and Thomas V. Zartman.

Graveside services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, at Fulton Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 5, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home in Fulton.

Bradley J. “Bake” Baker, 67, Rochester, went home to be with Jesus Thursday, Dec. 23, 2021.

On Sept. 11, 1954, Brad was born in Fulton County. He was the treasured son of Lyman and Angelina Pafundi Baker. During his high school years, Brad was involved in instrumental and vocal music.

He played major roles in theatrical productions of Tri%5$'/(< - Epsilon and gifted with his voice, sang baritone with %$.(5 the Manitous. With three quick blasts of his whistle, he led the RHS marching Zebras as the drum major onto the RHS football field for the halftime show. He also helped fire up the crowd, leading cheers from the edge of the hardwoods during the basketball season. Brad graduated with the Rochester High School Class of 1972.

Music and theater were a lifelong passion of Brad’s. He was a member of the Fulton County Players and played his trombone with our local big band sound Tuxedo Junction. An avid scuba diver, he participated in many dives.

With diverse interests as an entrepreneur, Brad owned and operated Auto Pro, an automotive parts store in both Akron and Rochester. Excelling in sales and customer service, he also owned and operated Gunsmoke Firearms.

Most will remember Brad as an amazing friend, a good listener and a practical joker with a great sense of humor. He was compassionate, always there to help others in need. Charisma and his bright smile were major components of his persona. Brad is remembered cruising around town in his maroon, 1967 classic Chevrolet Corvette. During the holidays Santa Brad, attired in his red suit trimmed in white, was the perfect man to liven up a party and distribute gifts to all who were in attendance. Usually, another family member posed as an elf assisting Santa with gift distribution.

Paramount in Grandpa Brad’s life was his family, as he cherished the time spent with them making memories. Grandpa shared his intense love with all of the family during the holidays and special celebrations.

He shared his talents of target shooting with the kids and grandkids and accurately hit the bull’s-eye most frequently during the great afternoon of fun. Grandpa Brad was delighted to orchestrate the fireworks display at family picnics and summertime gatherings. Tender-hearted with all of his grands, Grandpa Brad helped raise Camden for several years.

He was born Aug. 16, 1957, in Rochester, the son of Wilbur Dean McCroskey and Marolyn (Dawson) Stemm. On Feb. 4, 1983, in Orrville, Ohio, he married Cathy Scott and she survives.

Mr. McCroskey had been an owner/operator truck driver and had worked for various trucking companies, as well as working for Rochester L.P. He attended Christian Life Fellowship and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Ronnie G. Bradley, 64, Rochester, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at 10:05 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 2021, at his home.

This followed a valiant 11-month battle with cancer.

On July 13, 1957, Ron was born in Burr Oak. In 1975, he graduated from Culver Community 5211,( * High School. %5$'/(< Ron and Miss Treina Lee Bradley were married Dec. 31, 1983, in Rochester’s First Baptist Church. They shared 38 years of life’s adventures. From their union came a beautiful daughter, Ashley. A precious granddaughter Adeline has been added to the family tree.

At Airmarking, Ron was their dedicated mechanic for nearly a quarter century, retiring in January 2021 due to his declining health.

An American sportsman, Ron was an avid hunter, displaying many of his finest trophies around his home. He loved to fish at secluded ponds around the county with his family, most days catching the limit.

An early riser, Ron would many mornings pick up the cook and make the first pot of coffee at Tweedle-Dees, his hang-out for breakfast. It was here he met up with his buddies to discuss and solve the world’s problems and catch up on the latest local gossip. Gifted with working with his hands, Ron forged custom knives for family and special friends.

Grandpa Ron was a title recently acquired with the birth of his beautiful granddaughter, Adeline Mae, just three years ago. She was the apple of his eye. Ron enjoyed getting together with his family at the holidays and special celebrations making memories.

Mary Zartman Daughters Of The American Revolution Member Mary “Sis” Zartman, 94, Rochester, passed away at 9:22 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021, at her residence.

On Dec. 21, 1927, Mary Ellen was born in Rochester to Alvin Lee and Chloe Arletta Ewing Johnson. Growing up she shared her childhood with her 0$5< =$570$1 big brother, Lee, and earned her nickname Sis. As a Fulton Bulldog, she graduated from Fulton High School in 1945. While in school, she had perfect attendance for 12 years and earned a Citizenship Award.

Sis and Michael L. Zartman were married April 21, 1946, in Fulton County. They shared 43 years of life’s adventures. Sadly, he passed away Dec. 27, 1989. Their union produced two daughters and a son. Three more generations have been added to the family tree.

At 77 years old, Sis retired from her lifetime of farming. Bowling at Quick Lanes with the Pin-Toppers was always a great way to strike up conversations with friends. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Throughout the day, she could often be found enjoying a glass of iced sweet tea.

During his career he has instructed 23 Fire Investigator 1 courses and 25 basic fire investigated courses. He has also been a guest instructor at various colleges, universities, police academies and conferences relating to law enforcement. He has also provided instruction at Logansport Police Department and Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department for arson investigation and fire scene search and seizure.

Sumpter has written and published several documents and was awarded the North District Investigator of the Year in 2001 by the state fire marshal’s office; received the Top Gun Award in 2002, from the state fire marshal’s office and the Fire Investigator of the Year Award in 2005 by the Indiana Chapter of International Association of Arson Investigators.

Fulton County Farm Winter School begins tonight The 2022 Fulton County Farm Winter School education series begins tonight, Jan. 5, in the Rochester High School Vo-Ag room. Each meeting of the free four-part series will be held Wednesdays beginning at 7:30 p.m. All meetings are at the high school.

Kelley will cover the possibility of irrigation expansion as well as general irrigation management information.

Session Four — Controlling Tar Spot And Other Diseases Wednesday, Jan. 26 Dr. Darcy Telenko, Purdue Extension Field Crop Plant Pathologist Mark Kepler, Purdue Extension Educator AG/NR Fulton County Telenko will discuss the impact of fungal disease, especially tar spot in corn and how it took their economic toll in the area this past year.

Understanding this disease and others, including when to use fungicides, are critical information for area farmers. A portion of this class will include information about Drift Watch Crop Registry presented by Mark Kepler. This program is also certified as a PARP class for those needing a pesticide license credit.

The cost is $10 for those needing the pesticide credit. This program will be held in the Rochester High School auditorium.

Luginbill’s art on display at Rochester Library The latest exhibit at the gallery of the Fulton County Public Library in Rochester is Sarah L. Luginbill. She is a self-taught painter who has won many awards throughout Indiana and exhibited in galleries with solo and group shows.

The exhibit is co-sponsored by the Fulton County Public Library and the Times Theater Arts Committee. The library is located at 320 W. Seventh St., Rochester.

Luginbill is a self-taught painter who has a deep love for all things beautiful. She lives in Peru where she raised four children with her husband, Ron. Luginbill owns and operates Gallery 15, 15 E. Main St., located

in downtown Peru. The gallery is housed in an historic building complete with original tin ceiling and unique hardwood floors. This space is her studio, classroom to her students and creative gallery to exhibit her art and other selected artists. Gallery 15 artwork surrounds a music stage perfectly placed for enjoying art and music with local artists.

She was born to missionary parents in Sierra Leone, West Africa, where she lived until she was 16 years old. They encouraged hard work and persistence to achieve excellence. It has paid off, as Luginbill’s work has been well received in many shows throughout Indiana. She has won awards in

the Hoosier Salon as early as 1992.

In 2004 she won Outstanding Watercolor, Traditional for the painting titled “Torn Tapestry.” She has also won many other awards throughout Indiana and exhibited in galleries with solo and group shows.

Select your books or audio books and get started on your best winter reading adventure and kick off the new year by participating in the adult winter reading program from Jan. 10 through March 25.

Every time you finish a book, write the title on the printed form, available at the library. Once you have read three books, bring the form to the library and put it into one of the prize drawing boxes for

a chance to win a prize. Then, take another form and keep reading. The winning names will be drawn at the conclusion of the program in March.

The Department of Justice has announced nearly $126 million in funding to advance school safety under the STOP School Violence Act. The grants, awarded by the Office of Justice Programs’ Bureau of Justice Assistance and the department’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, will help institute safety measures in and around primary and secondary schools, support school violence prevention efforts, provide training to school personnel and students, and implement evidencebased threat assessments.

Rochester Community School Corporation was one of two school districts in Indiana to receive funding from the DoJ. It will receive a grant in the amount of $387,338.

“The Justice Department has no greater responsibility than protecting Americans from harm,” said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland. “Schools must be safe places to learn, and today’s investment of more than $125 million under the STOP School Violence Act will help ensure that they are.”

“I applaud the Rochester and Hanover, Indiana, school districts in their endeavors to enhance school safety with these federal grants,” said U.S. Attorney Clifford D. Johnson.

The Students, Teachers and Officers Preventing School Violence Act of 2018 gives the Justice Department the authority to provide awards directly to states, units of local government, Indian tribes, and public agencies (such as school districts and law enforcement agencies) to improve security at schools and on school grounds through evidence-based school safety programs. It also provides grants to ensure a positive school climate by helping students and teachers recognize, respond quickly to, and help prevent acts of violence.

The 78 BJA annual awards, totaling almost $74 million, are intended to support training and education for school personnel and students on preventing violence against others and themselves, including anti-bullying training and specialized training for school officials to respond to mental health crises. Funds also help develop and implement multidisciplinary threat assessment or intervention teams and design technology solutions such as anonymous reporting systems, hotlines and websites.

The COPS School Violence Prevention Program provides up to 75% of the funding for school safety measures in and around primary and secondary schools. The 153

SVPP awards, totaling almost $52 million, are statutorily obligated to be used for coordination with law enforcement; training for local law enforcement officers to prevent student violence; locks, lighting and other deterrent measures; technology for expedited notification of local law enforcement during an emergency; and other measures that provide a significant improvement in security.

In our country, the highly contagious Delta variant has been the dominate viral strain since late summer. But the new Omicron variant seems to be three times more contagious than Delta. Some believe it may be as contagious as the measles virus.

Cases of Omicron are doubling every two to four days and soon could become the dominate strain. United Kingdom researchers recently stated people who are vaccinated and boosted were 85% less likely to develop severe illness from the highly mutated Omicron strain. But currently only 30% of U.S. residents who received the initial vaccine have received a booster dose.

If hosting a gathering with unvaccinated friends and family:

Get vaccinated and boosted as soon as possible, even if you have had a previous case of COVID-19.

Have all unvaccinated guests get a rapid test a couple days before your event, home test kits are available at some pharmacies, grocery stores and online.

cannot see the finished product, but he promises us it is wonderful (1 Corinthians 2:9).

God is patient: He patiently works with us, tenderly leading us. God patiently directs in our lives, seeking to fulfill his will. Often he uses the hands of others to help shape us — parents, teachers, fellow Christians, even those who persecute us. It takes time to make a worthwhile product, and God is willing to wait. He created us, and he will take care of us.

Sometimes the world seems hopeless. Maybe it’s because of the violence that creates a domino effect as one outburst after another erupts.

Maybe it’s the hardship we experience through illness, family conflict and money issues. Maybe it’s the messy political climate that leaves candidates and constituents alike entangled in disagreement.

Where’s all the good news? My hope does not rest in the affairs of this world. My hope rests in the Lord Jesus Christ who is coming again. As followers of Jesus Christ, we know there’s hope beyond this life — a glorious hope of something more, something greater than anything we can imagine, with no more sorrow, sickness, or pain.

With so much suffering and discord dominating the headlines — and even our personal lives — we may miss the good things happening around us. God is still working in the world, and we need to express our gratefulness for his protection and provision. The Bible (God’s Word) says his mercies “are new every morning” (see Lamentations 3:2223).

The Bible predicts a new day is coming. There will be a golden age of prosperity when all perplexing problems — religious, social, or political — will find their complete solution. It will be a wonderful time for this mixed-up world. However, the Bible teaches mankind will not bring about this coming golden age.

Mankind alone cannot. The flaw in human nature is too great.

Mankind has no ability to repair this damaged planet. God is our only hope. His plans are already formed and they are perfectly stated in the Bible.
