Compassionate Health Center accepted its first patient in September 2009, and has been helping residents ages 18–64 ever since.

“We run just like any doctor’s office, we are not a walk–in clinic; we see patients with scheduled appointments from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday,” said Kay. The only difference between Compassionate Health Center’s office and other doctor’s offices is there is no charge.

“We can prescribe medicines at no charge or low cost; administer flu shots; order lab tests and x–rays; provide CPAP and BiPAP machines and nebulizers for COPD patients; and address whatever their medical needs may be,” she said.

The primary concentration of CHC is medical services. Once patients have been seen for medical, the other integrated services can follow.

CHC’s integrated services include: limited dental, vision and mental health counseling.

“Dental is made possible by the generosity of the local dentists in the community. They discount the services they provide and the remainder of the cost is paid for by a grant from REAL Services,” explained Kay. “Before we started offering dental, patients would go to the emergency room and run up a huge bill for a toothache and still not have the problem resolved. Antibiotics and pain medicine were given, but that was only a temporary fix and not a permanent solution. Within a few weeks, they’d be back in the same situation. Since dental has been offered, the number of patients going to the ER for dental is now practically nothing,” she said.“Family Eyecare provides free vision checks for our patients. We help with the March Akron Lions Club fish fry and they donate the proceeds to us. Those funds are used to provide discounted glasses for patients.”

The other integrated health service offered is in conjunction with Four County Mental Health Counseling. A bilingual, doctoral student from Notre Dame provides free mental health counseling at the clinic.

The other 50% of funding comes from donations, fundraisers and grants. The largest fundraiser is the annual golf outing, which typically takes place in June, but due to the pandemic was cancelled in 2020.

CHC is staffed by three part–time employees, including Kay; Linda Milliser, office manager; and Jayme Parker, nurse practitioner. The center also has many volunteers who help with clerical and nursing responsibilities.

The office hours are from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Mon-

day – Thursday.

Kay noted people without insurance often wait until they’re critically ill before seeking help, because they are concerned about the high cost of care without insurance.

“Sixty percent of our patients are employed. People are working, but at the wage they are making they can’t afford health insurance. Compassionate Health Center is an amazing asset to Fulton County; it allows the uninsured to get the care they need without worrying about cost,” she said.

As a goal for 2021, Kay would like to see physical fitness opportunities made available to patients. This would be in conjunction with a series of nutrition education classes offered to clinic patients by Purdue Extension.

“After I graduated from Notre Dame, I didn’t know for sure what I was called to do. I took two years off and served in AmeriCorps. It wasn’t until I shadowed an OB-GYN that I was sure being a doctor was what I wanted to do. I watched how the women going to this doctor trusted him to take care of them. They shared with him the private details of their health. I wanted to make a difference like that.”

Before coming to Woodlawn, Selio worked for four years caring for women and children at Physician’s Holistic Health Alliance in South Bend. “I love working with women during preconception and caring for them during pregnancy and delivery.

Then, after mom gives birth, I enjoy taking care of her baby, too.

continuity of care that is possible in family medicine.” In her family practice at Woodlawn, she is responsible for patients of both sexes and all ages.

“It’s about an hour’s drive from my home in Granger to the hospital in Rochester. My husband Pete and I are looking for a house closer, perhaps in Plymouth or Rochester.” The Selios have three children: Joshua, 6, Penelope, 4, and Peter, 2.

“It’s often hard to balance being a mother and a doctor. My husband calls me a ‘woman of the people.’ With my previous job, I was on call quite a bit. I am hoping my job at Woodlawn will give me more time to spend with my family.”

Selio knew from the beginning being a doctor was very demanding. “I had a friend in college whose dad was a doctor.

She tried to encourage me to pursue something other than medicine. She told me how many activities her father had to miss because of his job. So, I knew going in that I was going to miss some time with my family.”

Her daughter Penelope admires the work her mother does.

“She will often find my stethoscope and wear it around the house saying she wants to be a doctor someday, too.”

immediately after Jesus temptation in the wilderness, are recorded in John 1:19-4:45.

gospel to the person of the Holy Spirit. Luke tells about the Lord’s first visit to Nazareth, but Matthew and Mark record only his second ministry there (Matthew 13:54-58; Mark 6:16). Since Nazareth was Jesus’ hometown, you would think they would have been ready to receive him — but they were not.

When the congregation heard this, they were furious. Jumping up, they mobbed Jesus and forced him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built.

The people intended to push him over the cliff, but Jesus passed right through the crowd and went safely on his way.

Jesus loves you and wants to help you if there is a need in your life. Don’t do like the people of Nazareth did and try to push him away.

propriate. By this time, Jesus had ministered about a year and was very popular; so it was natural the synagogue leader ask him to participate. The appointed lesson included Isaiah 61:1-2, and Jesus used it as the text for his sermon in which he made three startling announcements.

First, Jesus announced the scriptures were fulfilled in him.

He was anointed by the Holy Spirit to minister to all kinds of needy people and bring them the salvation of the Lord.

Second, Jesus announced the Year of Jubilee had begun. “The acceptable year of the Lord” refers to Leviticus 25, the 50th year when everything in Israel was restored to its proper place. (Notice Jesus omitted part of Isaiah 61:2, “the day of vengeance of our God,” because that day is yet to come.)

Finally, Jesus announced all of this was by the grace of God. He gave two examples from Jewish history to prove God showed mercy to Gentiles (1 Kings 17:1-7; 2 Kings 5:1-15).

OBITUARIES Stephen L. St. Clair

Owner/Operator Of St. Clair Groceries and Campground Stephen L. St. Clair, 75, Kewanna (Fletcher’s Lake), passed away at 5:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28, 2020, at his residence.

He was born Jan. 24, 1945, in Logansport, the son of Devon A. “Dee” and Ellen Clare (Heater) St. 67(3+(1 / Clair. He graduated from Caston High School and 67 &/$,5 from Western New Mexico University, Silver City, N.M. Steve had retired as an appliance salesman for Sears and had been owner/operator of St. Clair Groceries and Campground at Fletcher’s Lake. He had been a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Lucerne, Grass Creek Lions Club and had attended Fletcher’s Lake United Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing, watching sports and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his daughters, Stacee (Kelly Shanley) St. Clair, Denver, Ind., and Sally (Dwight) Dunwoody, Rochester. Also surviving are grandchildren, Griffin Shanley, David St. Clair and Jacob St. Clair, all of Denver, Ind., Clair Dunwoody, Andrew Dunwoody, Isabel Dunwoody and Harrison Dunwoody, all of Rochester. The following siblings also survive: Susan Wallner of Denver, Colo., Shirley (Noel) Hinman of Demotte, Samuel (Sara) St. Clair of South Whitley, and Sharon Nethercutt of Columbia City. Several beloved nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents and twin siblings, Stanley Devon St. Clair and Sarah Ellen St. Clair.

Visitation was held Thursday, Dec. 31, at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester. A private funeral mass was conducted at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Rochester, immediately following.

Ruthann Markley Quality Control Manager

Ruthann Markley, 62, Rochester, passed away at 4 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2020, at Bay Front Health Center in Port Charlotte, Fla. She was born Feb. 22, 1958, in Fulton County, to Steve and Judith Damron Croussore. Growing up she shared her childhood with two brothers, Dave and Jim. In 1976, she graduated from 587+$11 Rochester High School. In Rochester, Ruthann and 0$5./(< Richard Lee “Rick” Markley were married June 24, 2000. They shared 20 years of life’s adventures.

As a quality control manager, Ruthann worked for Airvac for many years. Later she was a customer service specialist at Topp Industries, then retired in 2016. To stay busy, Ruthann assisted families with custom domestic engineering projects, yet taking time to winter in Port Charlotte, where she and Rick had a home. Her memberships included the Moose Lodge Family Center 1107 and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Women’s Auxiliary.

At home, Ruthann planted and cared for multiple rose gardens that graced the landscape of her home, adding bursts of color. She and Rick enjoyed “pool time,” when the grandchildren came to chill in the summer, swimming and making many fun memories.

Ruthann loved the sun, sand and surf on the breezy shore of the Gulf of Mexico. She and Rick took many walks on the beach, enjoying the warmth of the sun. Sometimes their day included searching for shark’s teeth. The perfect end to each day was hitting the Tiki Bar, enjoying seafood and beverages while talking with friends and watching the sunset over the gulf.

Randall E. Spaulding “Rockin’ Randy”

Randall E. Spaulding, 69, Rochester, passed away at 6:53 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, 2020, at the Seton Specialty Hospital in Indianapolis.

In Terre Haute, Randall Eugene Spaulding was born Aug. 16, 1951. He was the precious son of Robert E. and Roseann Apple Spaulding. Grow5$1'$// ( ing up he shared his childhood with two brothers, 63$8/',1* Bob and Michael. The Spaulding family moved to Kokomo, where Randy graduated from Kokomo High School with the class of 1970.

On May 27, 1972, Randy married the love of his life, Miss Cecilia Sue Warnock. From their union came three wonderful children, Scott, Kristie and Sheila. The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of six grandchildren.

A truck driving professional, Randy hauled loads from coast to coast. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge, Sons of the American Legion and VFW. An accomplished musician and vocalist, “Rockin Randy” sang tenor while providing accompaniment on his six-string electric guitar. His repertoire included country, gospel and rock and roll. He enjoyed fishing, baseball and basketball. There was nothing more relaxing than climbing aboard his shiny red 2018 Harley Davidson trike and catching the warm summer breeze while tooling around northern Indiana.

Randy was owned by “Baby,” his Great Dane lap dog who followed him like a shadow.

Left to cherish Randy’s memory are his loving wife, Sue; three children, Kristie Spaulding and companion Philip Richie of Rochester, Sheila Ann Christman of Las Vegas, Nev., and Randall Scott Spaulding of Rochester; six grandchildren, Suellynn Keil and husband James, Maddison Meyer, Lillyan Meyer, Liam Richie, twins Miles and Violet Richie and with a great expectation, “Baby Keil,” due to arrive July 8, 2021; and a brother, Michael Spaulding and wife Carol of Akron.

Fulton County Animal Center’s kitty shoe box storage closet needs replenished. Did you get a new pair of shoes during the holidays and still have their container?

Empty shoe boxes give the center’s visiting kitties a little spot of their own. The boxes

help make them feel safe and comfortable.

Boxes can be dropped off in either of the building entrances during normal business hours. FCAC is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays; and 11

a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. The center is closed Sundays and Mondays. It is located at 1540 Wentzel St., Rochester.

Mediacom offering scholarships to high school seniors Mediacom Communications is offering $60,000 in scholarship support for high school seniors who plan to obtain further education. The scholarship program is in its 20th consecutive year and Mediacom’s investment will award $1,000 World Class Scholarships to 60 high school seniors.

Scholarship recipients are given the flexibility to use the financial award to support postsecondary college costs or vocational training from an accredited institution starting in the fall of 2021. Award selection is based on academic achievement and lead-

ership.

Applications for Mediacom’s World Class Scholarships are available online at www.mediacomworldclass.com. All high schools in Mediacom-served communities were sent informational cards asking school officials to make seniors aware of the scholarship and encourage application submissions on or before the Feb. 15 deadline.

Interactive story time seeks participants “Story Time with Mr. B” is an interactive read aloud that integrates social and emotional learning standards into a themed reading. These read alouds are a part of a 13-week research based, digital content marketing campaign designed by The Barts Consultancy and produced by Split Road Media. Both local companies plan to partner with libraries and school corporations in Marshall, Pulaski, Kosciusko and Fulton County to bridge the mental health education gap that exists in our area.

Through the reading of children’s books focused on social and emotional learning standards that fall

under the domains of kindness, social connection, and gratitude, Mr. B hosts a captivating conversation with children ages 3-12 anchored guided by well-known social and emotional learning literature. Children then participate in a think-pair-share activity of sharing their social and emotional learning explorations (a metacognitive quick write that asks children to recall a moment of kindness) with other children. Cookies, hot chocolate and lots and lots of love!

Their first book will be “Martin’s Big Words” where the children will learn about one of his most famous sayings: “Darkness does not drive

out darkness. Only light can do that.

Hate does not drive out hate. Only love can do that.”

They started their launch Jan. 4, with their partner, the Plymouth City Library and plan to expand from there. All content will be available on their YouTube/Rumbel Channel and your local school/library websites.

Around 7 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, the fire department was called to Beaver Dam Lake for a water rescue. An older gentleman, who resides around the lake, had gone out to rescue his dog that had fallen into the water. The dog’s owner took out his boat and rescued the dog.

But he could only get back within 100 to 125 feet from shore.

Kevin McSherry, fire chief, reported there was an ice ledge around the lake but open water beyond.

Tippecanoe Valley receives donation from Discount Warehouse Discount Warehouse owner Lloyd Bailey made a generous donation to area schools on Monday, Dec. 21.

Three semi-trailers were filled with a variety of new goods. Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation was one of three school districts to receive a trailer of items.

The brand new items included hats, gloves, clothing and more that will be used to serve families and students in need within each school district. The estimated retail value of the items is $150,000.

“We appreciate the support from Mr. Bailey and all of the efforts to distribute this generous donation to our students and families,” said Blaine Conley, Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation superintendent.

“It’s fantastic to see people in the community step up and help others, especially during the pandemic.”
