The Sidney Wagner you might not know %\ 0,.( '($. 6WDII :ULWHU Sometimes you find out really interesting details when you least expect them. Rewind to Feb. 5. Tippecanoe Valley’s girls basketball season had just ended, and with it, the outstanding prep career of Sidney Wagner. Valley was emerging from the lockerroom following a one-point overtime loss. As the proceedings wrapped up, my conversation shifted to head coach Chris Kindig. As we walked out of the Hardwood Teepee, he offered along the lines of, “Did you ask her about her motocross career? She’s quite the rider.” Wagner’s family owns and runs Red Bud, which for anyone growing up in northern Indiana, even if you don’t like dirt track racing or motocross, you at least likely have heard the TV and radio commercials. “My whole family, this is their thing,” Wagner said. “My dad, my uncle, they’ve been riding since they were kids and I came up riding, too. My mom’s side of the family, they own Red Bud. So, like, I was always up there and that’s where it started. When I was three, we had a track in the backyard and that’s when I started to ride a lot. The rule is

Photo provided by Angie Wagner. you have to be four to start your first race. As soon as I turned four, I started racing. “I raced with the boys, I didn’t race with the girls, so I was expected to go out there and do good,” said Wagner with that drip of swagger in her voice. “I was the one who beat all the boys. Also, I went to nationals three times. Down in Tennessee, I finished third once, which put me third in the country for girls. Everyone local knows what you do and who you are, so it was kind of a thing.” So as her riding career grew, complete with sponsorships and a viral video of her clearing the triple jump on an 85CC at Red Bud, Wagner was well on her way. But she also was becoming a star in basketball, and was forming a lifelong bond with Sophie Bussard, who was ready to pass the torch to

Wagner as the next alpha in the Valley program. “That’s one of the reasons why I faded out of it, there’s no future in girls motocross,” Wagner dished. “Even if I went pro in it, there’s no money. I don’t know if I had the speed, even if I trained, to run with the guys, but no girl has ever done that. That’s a big reason why I quit. Riding isn’t going to get you into college. It won’t make you any money. So going into high school, I had to focus and decide on what was going to be my next step.” While Wagner still rides in the backyard and the family is still heavily involved with motocross, Sid decided basketball was the route to the next stop on the tour. So earlier this year Wagner announced she signed with Trine University to continue her basketball and academic careers. While

the WNBA is also about as remote an option as getting into men’s motocross, having basketball as a jumpoff to a good education is her current gear shift. But is her racing suit being hung up for good? “Oh heck no!,” she emphatically stated. “(Trine) haven’t told me no, or yes, we never really talked about it. I told them. If I’m busy, I won’t be able to ride. I’m scared if I wreck or something then I could hurt myself and then I’ve got bigger problems. But they never said no. “With me, I don’t want to give it up, Before high school, I rode all the time and it was my passion. It just came down to high school ball and that was what I chose to focus on. Once I get out of college, I’ll still ride, just probably not like I used to.”

Hare raising hobbyist helps the 4-H communities %\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Gene Shoff, Rochester, was born at home, on a leap year, in Grovertown. He was the ninth of 12 siblings and his family later moved to Plymouth and lived on a horse and pony farm where Shoff learned a great deal about ponies, horses and rabbits. “Dad had the kids break the horses in and ride them. We trained them from the ground up,” he said. Shoff estimated he’s trained more than 2,000 horses over the years. He also participated in the rodeo from the age of 21 to 32 and rightfully earned the nickname “Cowboy.” Horses weren’t his first love though — rabbits were. “Thirty-five years ago, I went to a show and bought a girl rabbit and a boy rabbit from two different people and they multiplied,” he said of his humble rabbit beginnings. Those two rabbits have turned into a hare raising hobby Shoff is proud to call his own. All of his rabbits have pedigrees and he estimated he has shown more than 50 breeds including palominos, New Zealand, Californians, Dutch Belgian and more. Currently Shoff’s rabbit habitat is home to around 39 mini

lops. His 35-plus year hobby has provided local and surrounding county 4-H kids the opportunity to raise and show rabbits at both county and state fairs. All of Shoff’s rabbits have names and he keeps a book with the rabbit’s family tree and pedigrees. He even hand makes each rabbit’s cage. “I only breed them twice a year, (which increases their life span), even though they can have up to six litters per year,” he said. The gestation period is 30 days and the litters range from as few as five, up to as many as 20. The biggest litter Shoff has ever had was 11. He typically breeds them at the first of the year and again in the fall. They reach adulthood at six months old and his longest living rabbit was 10 years, 10 months and 10 days old when it passed. As a breeder, he gets to see multiple generations of people come to him for his rabbits. Grandma bought a rabbit from him as a child and when her daughter was ready to show 4-H rabbits, she took her to Shoff. Shoff shared a comment from a customer, “She didn’t know what she was going to do for 4-H when she was nine years old, but you talked to her, explained the rabbits and got her started. The

young lady showed rabbits for many years and she later became a 4-H leader. “I enjoy going to the 4-H shows. I love being a part of the joy the kids get to experience through the rabbits. A girl in 4-H from Elkhart County bought rabbits from me for ten years in a row, and whenever she’d win, she’d send me the newspaper clipping.” Shoff also enjoys his flock of 18 chickens. He once had a rooster that used to hitch a ride on the horse’s back. His neighbor has dubbed him the Pied Piper, due to the way his flock follows him around the property. Shoff’s love of animals is evident. If you’d like to be part of his hare raising experience or know of a 4-H participant looking for a rabbit source, he can be reached at (574) 223-5020.

To my neighbor seeking a church helping families stay together, my husband and I have benefited from articles on jw.org, particularly in the “Marriage and Family” section. The articles are Biblebased and they helped us learn how to apply Bible principles which really improved our relationship. There is also helpful content for parents, children and teenagers on the website. I hope it benefits your family as much as it did ours.

Easy lawn care With the outdoor season upon us, there are a few simple ways to help your lawn stay lush and green and become the pride and joy of your neighborhood. You can start by giving your lawn a good raking to create a de-thatching effect and “wake up” the lawn for the season. Fertilizing Cutting the grass removes nutrients that need to be replaced to achieve healthy growth. From the beginning of spring, you should fertilize the lawn every four or five weeks. Nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous are important ingredients for a healthy lawn. Application amounts and instructions are available on most fertilizer packaging. • In early spring, start the new season by using crabgrass preventer. • In late spring, apply weed-nfeed that will kill weeds and help your lawn grow. • By mid-summer or any time apply lawn food for a stronger, healthy and greener lawn. • In early fall, apply winterized fertilizer to provide additional nutrients. Watering How often you need to water your lawn depends on temperature and humidity. When a lawn needs water, the grass will begin to take

on a blue-gray tint, and the older grass blades will begin to curl up and wilt. New lawns should be watered once a day so seeds can germinate and a solid root system can form. Cutting Regular cutting of the lawn is important because it thickens the grass. Cutting it little and often is better than all in one go. Switch directions and patterns so the grass blades aren’t pressed in the same direction each time. In the middle of summer, you might want to keep

the grass a little longer to withstand heat. With persistence, you can win the battle against weeds using the right tools, herbicides or weed-nfeed products. Also, the grass roots need air in order to grow, therefore it is important to occasionally aerate your lawn to clear away dead roots and thatch to create more breathing space for the lower parts of the grass plus help stems grow better. The above article was provided by Menards.

More room needed to tell Mentone’s story %\ 7,0 $6+/(< 6WDII :ULWHU Walking into the Mentone Historical Museum, it is clear a considerable amount of the town’s history is on display. But so much more of that history is not so visible. For many years the Lawrence D. Bell Aircraft Museum on Oak Street in Mentone also had the original section designated for many items about the history of the town. But when interest increased in donating items, the board of directors voted Aug. 28, 2018, to rename the history of Mentone portion of the building the Mentone Historical Museum. It has a separate entrance from the Bell Museum too. Clearly, more space is needed to properly display all of the donated items. A fund for maintenance and building has been set up through the Kosciusko County Community Foundation and a building committee exists. The committee is considering whether to tear down the existing historical museum and build a bigger one or add on to the existing building. Linda Cochran, a member of the board of directors for the museum, noted originally the building that dates to the 1970s was designed for keeping Bell memorabilia. The first helicopter didn’t arrive until the late 1990s. Bell was the founder of the Bell Aircraft Corporation and was born in Mentone April 5, 1894.

But eventually because of the increasing interest in donating items and preserving the town’s history the board of directors wanted to remember that history. “It’s our way of keeping Mentone alive,” Cochran commented. There are interesting displays to be found including a library table donated by the Tucker family that was built by John Morgan in 1928. Etched on top of the table is the outline of the original plat of Mentone. Tim Whetstone, another board member, said there was essentially nothing in Mentone except for a couple of houses before the railroad came through in the early 1880s. Another display features War Mothers Unit 106, a group of women who contributed to the World War II effort by sewing, stitching and through other means. Also on display is some of the story of Russell Eber, a World War II veteran from Mentone who had a million dollar estate when he died. He was a woodworker who did his work for the trailer industry. There are also binders containing genealogies of prominent local families as well as profiles of several people with compiled newspaper clippings, obituaries and more. Volunteers have donated their time to compile the information. An old photo shows one of the first cars built in Mentone. Another goal is to put on display the many school related items. Mentone had its own high school until

Photo by Tim Ashley. consolidation closed it in the early 1970s. “There is no place to put them (school items),” Cochran said. In an attempt to draw more visitors to the museum, panels on the outside of the building by the entrance which are blank now would hopefully have photos put inside them.

Let’s study the Bible

All Things Work Together For Good Read Romans 8:22-30

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28) For the believer there are three “groans” found in Romans 8:22-26: (1) all creation groans, verse 22; (2) the believer groans await%\ 5(9 521 ing Jesus 385.(< Christ’s coming, verse 23; and (3) the indwelling Holy Spirit groans as he intercedes for us, verse 26. The Apostle Paul points out while Christians endure this suffering in hope we have the privilege of praying in the Holy Spirit. Perhaps too much of our praying is

of the flesh — long, beautiful, “pious” prayers that glorify man and nauseate God (Isaiah 1:11-18). The Apostle Paul indicates the most spiritual prayer could be a wordless groan that comes from the heart! “A sighs too deep for words.” The Holy Spirit makes intercession for us, the father searches our hearts and knows what the Holy Spirit desires, and this he grants to us. The Holy Spirit always prays in the will of God. What is the will of God? That believers might be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ (Romans:8:29). We can claim the promise of verse 28 because of the purpose of verse 29. Notice all the verbs in verse 30 are past tense: the believer has been called, has been justified, and has been glorified. Why faint under the sufferings of this world when we have already been glorified? We simply wait for the revelation of this glory at the second coming of Jesus Christ. Yes, Jesus Christ is coming again. A while back I read a story about a visiting pastor who attended a men’s breakfast in the middle of a rural farming area of the country. The group had asked an old farmer,

decked out in bib overalls, to say grace for the morning breakfast. “Lord, I hate buttermilk,” the farmer began. The visiting pastor opened one eye to glance at the farmer and wonder where this was going. The farmer loudly proclaimed, “Lord, I hate lard.” Now the pastor was growing concerned. Without missing a beat, the farmer continued, “And Lord, you know I don’t much care for raw white flour.” The pastor once again opened an eye to glance around the room and saw he wasn’t the only one to feel uncomfortable. Then the farmer added, “But Lord, when you mix them all together and bake them just right, I do love warm fresh biscuits. So Lord, when things come up that we don’t like, when life gets hard, when we don’t understand what you’re saying to us, help us to just relax and wait until you are done mixing. It will probably be even better than biscuits. Amen.” Stay strong my friends, because our life is being mixed with lots of things we don’t care for ... relax and wait until the mixing is done. Remember Romans 8:28.

Expanding the hours of the museum is another possibility, assuming enough volunteers are available to cover those hours. “We are run by volunteers; many of them are retired,” she said. Whetstone is also currently working on refurbishing a Bell Model 48 helicopter. It is the only one known to still be in existence. Both museums are open from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays and by appointment. The museums are located at 210 S.

Vesper service provides music and message in Hudkins Arena A vesper service will once again be held at the Fulton County Fair, and will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 11, in the Hudkins Arena. The service will feature special worship music from at least six area churches, congregational singing and a selection from Promise, a local trio of gospel singers. Pastor Thad Stewart of Omega Church in Akron is tentatively scheduled to deliver the message. The service will run “from 45 minutes to an hour,” according to Brian Sewell, pastor of Whippoorwill Church in Rochester. Sewell has been organizing the service for 27 years. “It is always good getting together outside the walls of the church and worshiping with oth-

er believers,” Sewell said. “It is always really encouraging.” Sewell estimated 150 to 175 parishioners attend the vesper service in a typical year. “It depends on the weather, especially how hot it is.” At the end of the service, a freewill offering will be taken for United Ministries Outreach, a nonprofit in Rochester providing a food pantry and other services to the needy in the community. Its stated purpose is “to give assistance in the form of food or funds to Fulton County residents in need, keeping in mind God’s purposes.” United Ministries Outreach is located at 625 Pontiac St., Rochester, and can be reached at (574) 223-4802. Fulton County Fair will host competitions galore %\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU Seven of the eight days of the Fulton County 4-H Fair, to be held July 10-17, will feature at least one competition, all of which can be enjoyed by the whole family. No corn hole tournament will be in the lineup this year, but there will be plenty of other action to please the crowds. • 10 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 4-H tractor, lawn and garden zero turn contest. “This is put on by one of the 4-H clubs,” said Steven Williams, fair board president, “and will be a skills contest.” • 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 12, registration will begin for the Kiddy Pedal Pull on the west side of the Everett Smith Building. The competition, free to enter, will begin at 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by Fulton County Farm Bureau. • 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, tractor pull, sponsored by Gohn Ag. The competition will take place in the amphitheater. Admission is $10, free for children 5 and under. Anyone who wears Pioneer Seed apparel can get in for free. • 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, bide rodeo for kids, sponsored by Rochester Kiwanis Club. The obstacle course competition will take place outside the Everett Smith Building. • 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, Farmer Olympics and Pig Rodeo. “We have had this event for probably six years,” said Williams. Competitors consist of four-person teams who run through an obstacle course, loading items

into wheelbarrows, throwing and stacking bales of hay, after which they attempt to catch a pig, all in the fastest time possible. • 7 p.m. Thursday, July 15, extreme mud bog and tough truck competition, involving pickup trucks and Jeeps and side-byside UTVs in timed races. The event will be held in the amphitheater and admission is $5, with children 5 and under admitted free. • 6 p.m. Friday, July 16, antique tractor pull in the amphitheater. “This is the first year we will be pulling in Rochester,” said Julie Moore, secretary of North Central Indiana Antique Tractor Pullers Association, which is sponsoring the event. Tractors will run in two classes: modified for tractor models 1959 and older, and farm stock for tractors 1965 and older. Moore expects about 30 to 40 tractors to compete at the fair. “We will also have a local class for those who are not members of NCIATPA,” said Moore. “We usually get a lot of folks, like kids who bring their grandfather’s tractor.” Admission is $10, with children 5 and under free. • 7 p.m. Saturday, July 17, annual demolition derby. See the article on the derby elsewhere in this paper. Williams offered some advice for those who want to get the most out of their experience at the fair. “The biggest thing is working through the week’s list of events and planning out your time,” he said. “Come and eat some food and sit back and enjoy the entertainment.”

David Leavell: retired and still working %\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU David Leavell, who turned 70 in April, retired from 32 years in sales at the end of January. Retirement hasn’t slowed him down a bit. “I keep pretty busy,” he said, noting his motivation for getting out of bed every morning as “all the things I didn’t get done yesterday. I’m anxious to get started on another day.” Almost immediately after his retirement, Leavell formed his own company, designing and selling poultry equipment, particularly systems that collect the hens’ waste, drying it and forming pellets for garden fertilizer. Leavell was involved in the Fulton County 4-H for 10 years, during which he covered about “65 to 70 specialities” offered by the organization. “I usually did eight to 10 projects a year.” He showed Angus calves for his livestock proj-

ect and was involved in gardening, flower and electrical projects. “Every year the projects got more difficult,” he recalled. “It was a learning experience no matter which project you were advancing. You went from one year to the next with more knowledge.” During his 4-H career, he collected “a lot of nice ribbons, trophies and awards.” Though he left 4-H leadership two years ago, he is looking forward this year to the fourth generation to follow in his footsteps when his great-grandchildren will get involved with 4-H. “I try to help them anytime they need help.” Perhaps Leavell’s most notable legacy is the equestrian center for the 4-H Horse and Pony Club. He spearheaded its construction in 1995. “I helped sell the idea to everyone who needed to be sold to,” he said. “I contacted all the private horse associations for their input, and designed and built it around

what the industry told us they needed. It was kind of a ‘Field of Dreams’ and it has been quite successful. The tourist economic impact on the community has been phenomenal.” The equestrian center is on property owned by the fair association across Third Street from the main fairgrounds. Leavell still manages the center for outside shows. Leavell and his wife, Patricia, live in the country five miles south of Rochester. They will be married 47 years this coming December. They have three grown children, all of whom have been involved in 4-H. “Our grandkids are also involved in the horse and pony club.” Leavell is thankful for his time in 4-H and credited the community for its success. “We certainly appreciate people in the community who have always stepped up and supported the 4-H program. Every moment you spend is appreciated.”

Sheriff’s office issues 14 citations Fulton County Sheriff’s Office issued 14 seat belt citations during its recent Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign, which coincided with Memorial Day and lasted for three weeks. According to the department, the high-visibility patrols were conducted to encourage drivers and passengers to buckle up in order to prevent injuries and save lives. “We’re making progress, but unrestrained driving continues to be a concern,” said Sheriff Chris Sailors. “Wearing a seat belt needs to be a habit. It takes very little effort and is the best way to keep you and your loved ones safe on the road. Our focus continues to be on saving lives,

not writing tickets.” According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2020, the national seat belt use rate was 90.3 percent, down slightly from the previous year at 90.7 percent. Historically, seat belt use in Indiana has been above the national average, last recorded at 94.9 percent in 2019. Despite this, data from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute shows more than half of the people who died in passenger vehicle crashes last year in Indiana were unrestrained. Male drivers under the age of 34 were the most likely out of any age group to be found not wearing a seat belt at the time of a crash. “Buckling up matters,” said Devon McDonald, ICJI executive director. “From 2015 to 2019, seat belts have saved more than 69,000 lives in the U.S. I commend our law enforcement partners for bringing attention to this simple, life-saving action.”

In total, more than 200 Indiana police agencies participated in this year’s Click It or Ticket operation, which was funded by NHTSA through ICJI. Although the zerotolerance campaign is over, the department will continue to educate motorists about the importance of buckling up and the law.In Indiana, drivers and passengers can be ticketed for not wearing a seat belt. Drivers can also be cited for each unbuckled passenger under the age of 16. Additionally, children under eight must be properly restrained in a federally approved child or booster seat. “Wearing a seat belt is especially important if you’re a parent or caregiver,” said Robert Duckworth, ICJI traffic safety director. “Research shows that children whose parents buckle up are much more likely to buckle up themselves. We need everyone to set a good example and model safe driving behavior for our youth.”

Valhalla Farms to continue blueberry tradition %\ .(,7+ .1(33 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU Blueberries have been part of the agricultural landscape on CR 200W in Fulton County for as long as anyone in the area can remember. Drew and Stephanie McCulley have made the commitment to ensure that tradition continues, with the grand opening of Valhalla Farms. Formerly Siders Blueberry Farm, the McCulley’s purchased the 16-acre farm from Maurie and Kathy Siders after last year’s growing season. While the McCulleys both have a strong background in agriculture — both studied agriculture at Purdue — the science of corn and soybeans has been their wheelhouse rather than the small, tasty treat. They admit, however, having great mentors is making the transition a smooth process. “We were given a good foun-

dation,” said Stephanie. “Maurie and Kathy have been terrific in educating us about the farm. We’ve felt so welcome in the community. People want this farm to continue and succeed.” Stephanie grew up in Rochester while Drew was raised not far away in Walton. They had been living in eastern Indiana and were looking to return to the area but hadn’t found the right place. Last summer, Stephanie’s mom informed the couple the blueberry farm was for sale. “I was all about it,” said Stephanie. “He was iffy. After visiting the farm, he fell in love with it, though.” The word “Valhalla” means “Viking Heaven.” The McCulleys named their new business as a respectful nod to Stephanie’s father, legendary Tippecanoe Valley teacher and coach Jeff Shriver, who died of cancer in 2019.

“He was a Viking at heart,” said Stephanie. “When we were looking for a name for the business, ‘Valhalla’ stuck. We want people who come here to feel like family and enjoy this place like we do.” The McCulleys plan to expand the offerings at Valhalla Farms, which officially opened for business last Thursday. They will be selling fresh sweet corn this summer and will have U-pick strawberries in the fall. For now, they have U-pick blueberries, as well as pre-picked boxes for those who want to grab and go. Since the 16 different varieties of blueberries mature at different times of the summer, they will have picking opportunities into August. Additionally, they are selling freshly-butchered freezer beef, sold in 1/4, 1/2 and whole portions. “We want people to know where their food is coming from,” said Drew. “The quality and freshness of what we offer is important.” Valhalla Farms is located northwest of Rochester at 6254 W. 200N. US 31 lane closures underway There will be lane closures on US 31 near Argos for the next two months, the Indiana Department of Transportation announced. The restrictions between 19th Road and 20B Road are needed for a pipe replacement project. The work began Monday, June 28. The inside left lanes will be closed for the installation of a north and south crossover during phase one, which should last about two weeks before switching to phase two. Motorists should be prepared for changing traffic patterns in the area. One lane will remain open in each direction at all times, with one side of US 31 being closed to traffic and the other side converted to two-way traffic utilizing the crossovers.

Starting July 2, the Kenilworth Road intersection was closed for the rest of the project. The detour for Kenilworth Road on the west side of US 31 will be Kenilworth Road south to 20B Road and 20B Road east to US 31. The detour for Kenilworth Road on the east side of US 31 will be Kenilworth Road north to 19th Road and 19th Road west to US 31. This project will be ongoing through mid-August. INDOT urges drivers to stay alert near crews and follow traffic directions carefully. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time when driving through this area and should slow down and drive distraction-free through all work zones.
