In attendance was Moose International Supreme Governor Bruce Berger, currently on a tour of nearly 350 lodges across the U.S. and Great Britain. Every year, Rochester firemen organize a “Smoke Detector Blitz,” going door-to-door in a chosen neighborhood to check detectors and ensure residents have an escape plan in the event of a fire. In 2020, the department distributed more than 50 detectors, said Fire Chief Tom Butler, who thanked Lodge 1107 for the donation. “Local support is always appreciated,” he said, noting it sometimes “takes a while” to receive supplies from the state. Butler added his department has been busy, averaging two calls per day. Already Rochester Fire have responded to roughly 60 structure or grass fires in 2021. Following his graduation from Bremen High School, Engbrecht made his way up SR 331 to what was then known as Bethel College in Mishawaka to study business. Graduating in 2006, he took a job in Chicago as a construction manager. While an excellent first job for a recent college graduate, Engbrecht began to feel restless. He felt a spiritual calling to pursue a different career — he felt he needed to get into teaching. “I like to joke that I made the mistake of praying about it,” Engbrecht joked. “My wife says I’m more logical than practical. I don’t usually decide things on emotion, but I realized this was something I needed to do. There

Within a year he received his teaching certificate and license and was ready to start his new career. “The first teaching job I applied for was in Plymouth,” he said. “They ended up telling me I was their second choice, which was great except it meant I still didn’t have a job. Then, the day before school started in the fall of 2011, Tippecanoe Valley called and offered me a job teaching business. Even though I grew up in Bremen, I honestly didn’t know where the school was, other than it was down toward Warsaw.” Fortunately for the many students he has taught during the past decade, Engbrecht took the job at Valley, one from which he has never looked back. He started out teaching a variety of business classes at the high school. He said his role has become more focused in the past several years, including his leading a workbased learning program. As part of the program, students run a full-fledged beverage café inside the school that is open throughout the day with the exception of the lunch period.
“The students started the café from the ground up,” Engbrecht said. “It is student run and offers a variety of beverages and meets all state and federal guidelines.” Part of the WBL program also involves sending students out on internship and job shadowing placements. The opportunity gives them real-life experiences in job fields they might be interested in pursuing. Engbrecht also teaches an entrepreneurial class as well as a preparation for college and careers class for freshmen students. Recently, he led two teams of students to participate in the Fulton County Economic Development Corporation’s second annual “First Pitch” competition which was held in Rochester last month. The two teams from Valley finished first and second for their entrepreneurial ideas and presentation to judges, garnering them cash prizes of $500 and $350, respectively. Engbrecht and his wife currently are the parents of two children, Corban, 3, and Elsie, 1. However, home life is about to change dramatically for the family as they are expecting twins in July. Engbrecht shared his first two children were born through in vitro fertilization. He noted because of complications, the expected twins are being carried by Sabrina’s sister, who lives in Mishawaka.

In addition to the smoke detectors and Tommy Moose dolls, Lodge 1107 also raised $1,300 for the Fulton County Animal Adoption and Education Center during its “car on the ice” event, another example of how the Rochester Moose is able to use its location to not only have fun, but to benefit the community at the same time. Sheriff’s Department starts SAVE program Fulton County Sheriff’s Department is ramping up enforcement this spring to protect students going to and from school. During the next couple of months, officers will be positioned along bus stops and routes watching for stop-arm violations and unsafe driving behavior. The overtime patrols are funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the state’s Stop Arm Violation Enforcement, or SAVE program. The department joins more than 200 agencies around the state for the spring enforcement campaign.

How to love your closet If the only thing you want to do after opening your closet is to shut the door again, it’s time for an overhaul. You don’t have to be a neat freak to create and keep a functional, tidy closet space. It just takes planning and tough love. Consciously purge — Go through everything one-by-one and donate or sell what no longer flatters or fits you or you don’t love wearing. Be ruthless. A closet filled only with clothes you feel great in and are happy wearing makes getting dressed a breeze. If there’s dust on it, ditch it. Recycle torn or broken items, why give yourself an
additional job of getting them fixed? Aside from getting rid of clutter, you’ll have a mental inventory of what you have, making it easier to shop for what you truly need. Sort it out — Place items you wear most often front and center. You wear 20% of your clothes, 80% of the time. Sort items by type such as button-down shirts, dress pants, casual pants, etc., and maybe sort by color. Let your hangers help — If you have a mishmash of hangers, invest in all new ones or buy more of what you have the most of. Matching hangers is more visually appealing but also makes it easier to see what
you have. Live in the season — Store off-season items out of the way on the top shelves, under a bed or elsewhere. Use plastic bins with labeled lids, rotating with the changing seasons. Adjustable shelves make it easy to tweak your closet when the weather changes, for example taller shelves for sweaters versus T-shirts. Light it up — A well-lit bright space helps you stay motivated to keep a tidy space. A simple wall light that turns on easily would be beneficial. Keep the peace — Now that you’ve tidied up, maintain it. Every time you buy something new,

Joseph E. Harter Joseph E. Harter, 89, of rural Akron, died at 3 a.m., W e d n e s d a y, April 7, 2021, at Parkview Randallia Hospital of Fort Wayne. He was born Jan. 21, 1932, -26(3+ ( in Rochester, to +$57(5 the late Wilbur Charles and Fern Mae (Taylor) Harter. In November 1959, he married Beverley Martz; she survives. Manchester; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sisters, Carolyn Largen, St. Louis; and Suzanne Niles, Muncie. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Hester Jane, Esther Jean, and Mary Ann. Following his wishes, private family services were held with Pastor Thad Stewart officiating. The interment took place in Akron Cemetery, with graveside military rites in honor of his service. The arrangements have been entrusted to Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron. On Dec. 3 1955, in Athens, he married Anne Rhodes; she preceded him in death Aug. 20, 2009. He is survived by his daughter, Kim, (Dave) Yoder, Mexico; sons, Stuart (Cindy), Goshen; and Brett (Julie), Bourbon; eight grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; sisters, Norma (James) Lee, Mentone; and Judy Montague (Jim Wolfe), Akron; and extended son, Bub Cormican, Athens. He was preceded in death by sons Kelby and Ricci D. Swihart. The funeral service was Tuesday, April 13, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron. The interment will take place in the Gilead Cemetery, where graveside military rites will be performed by the Fulton County Honor Guard. RHS tabs Shaffer to lead program Last week, it was announced Ron Shaffer will be recommended for approval to the RCSC School Board at the April 19 meeting as the head football coach of Rochester High School for the 2021-22 school year. Shaffer was an assistant coach on the Rochester football staff for the 2020 season. Prior to this season, he was an assistant coach at Cass High School and Maconaquah High School, with more than 20 years of experience
coaching football. Shaffer was selected as the next leader of the Zebra football program by an interview committee made up of fellow coaches, teachers and administrators. “Coach Shaffer’s experience, knowledge of the game and dedication to student-athletes makes him a great choice for our school and corporation,” according to a press release. “We are excited to have Ron lead the staff and studentathletes of Rochester High School.”

is quieted. We commit ourselves to the grace of God and to the love of God. The Bible brings comfort and assurance of salvation to our souls. We need only to take a lesson from Israel in the Old Testament and start handling our problems and trials God’s way. There are some reasons why, in the Old Testament, Israel experienced victory. First, they had the Bible (the Word of God); second, they believed God; third, they acted in faith; fourth, they did it God’s way; and fifth, God gave them the victory. Obedience to God’s will and God’s way is the secret to success. The Lord’s way may seem too hard, too slow, or as in some cases too foolish, but his way is always the best way. But, God did give Israel the victory. We, too, can have a great victory. We can prevail in whatever situation we are facing right now. We must learn the lesson from Israel. God has promised us the victory. Remember, “Obedience is the very best way to show that you believe.”

Fulton County Habitat for Humanity received a $9,500 grant from the Fulton County Community Foundation to remove a fire damaged home in Rochester. The home, located at 1016 Monroe St., was recently donated to Habitat for Humanity to be used in a future home build. With the grant, Habitat for Humanity will remove the
home and prepare the lot to be used for a future Habitat home. Fulton County Habitat for Humanity was established in 1998. Since that time, they have constructed homes for 16 families in Fulton County. They are currently working with their 17th family. Habitat works to build strength, stability, and self-reliance in partnership with families in need of
