%\ .(,7+ .1(33 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU With a little luck, local children will have a new place to cool off in Rochester next summer. Thanks to the efforts and persistence of a couple of the city’s residents, a new water splash pad should be ready to help combat the summer heat and doldrums. According to Wendy Zent, one of the project’s organizers, she and her sister, Andi Lee, wanted to have a splash pad closer to home where they could take their grandchildren to visit, rather than having to leave town to go to another community. The pair organized their thoughts, gathered proposals and presented their plans to the Rochester Park Board this past April. The board thought highly enough to give the proposal their stamp of approval. This month, the city’s water board approved the water usage request,

which was the final hurdle to moving forward with the project. The sisters already had a fund set up at the Fulton County Community Foundation in memory of their father, Tom Wilson. From that fund, the sisters donated the first $10,000 toward the plan, estimated to cost $70,000 to construct. However, they are hoping to raise $100,000 to add extras to the project not included in the builder’s proposal, such as wheelchair accessibility, benches and picnic tables. They also would like to build a shed to store the equipment during the wintertime. Zent said they have begun a grassroots fundraising effort to raise the additional money. Two weeks ago, they sent out 100 letters asking for contributions. Last week they sent out 100 more. Additionally, they have applied for grants from the Fulton County Community Foundation as well as the REMC. They are hoping word-of-mouth will also encourage
people to make contributions to the project. The proposed water pad will be 20-feet by 40 feet, and will sit in the center of Rochester City Park. Zent said it will have a dozen spigots shooting water from beneath the pad, along with a dump bucket and a few water shooting props, including a fish, crab and frog. It also will have an umbrella that will soak the kids with falling water from above. The splash pad will be activated using a button, which will in turn start a timer for the water flow. When the timer expires, the button will have to be pushed again to restart the fun. Donations for the project have started to come in. Good Oil Company, which operates the Good to Go convenience stores/gas stations in Rochester, has designated the project for its “round up” program in July. Their customers are asked if they would like to round up their purchase to the next whole dollar amount, with
the difference given to the water pad. Funds for the project are being handled through the Fulton County Economic Development Corporation. Anyone wishing to donate to the fund can drop a check off at FEDCO, located at 822 Main St., Rochester. Be sure to put “splash pad” in the memo line of the check. All donations are tax deductible. Zent said the construction quote is good for two weeks and they need to put one-half down with the other half paid at completion. Once the water pad is completed, Zent and her sister will turn over its ownership and maintenance to the city and the parks department. In its design, they are planning to leave one end open for future expansion, if desired. “We’ve received really good support from the community,” Zent said. “This will be something for everyone in the community and there won’t be any charge to use it.”
