That’s not the case for 19 Rochester High School students who are enrolled in Charlee Schwenk’s summer PE class. This group of students is having the month of their lives right now, experiencing activities that they might never have done before, but hopefully might do for years after the class ends on June 28. “In the class, we’re wanting to introduce the students to ‘lifetime’ activities that they might continue to do in their life,” said Schwenk. “We’ve gone to the (golf) driving range, taken them swimming and bowling, played tennis and frisbee golf, and this.” The ‘this’ she was referring to was basic archery, which is where

we caught up with the class last Friday morning. The kids were at Ringer Outdoors, just northwest of Rochester, for their second lesson with bows and arrows. Their first lesson was a day earlier, but with many of the students you couldn’t tell, as they used the indoor range to fire at paper targets. This is the second year Schwenk has brought her summer school students to Ringer Outdoors. The first year was 2019, since the class didn’t take place in 2020 because of COVID. “We want to give them something new to do,” added Schwenk. “These are activities they can do on their own if they choose to. Additionally, the high school recently received free archery equipment through a grant I applied to through the National Archery Association. The teachers are waiting on their free training sessions so that we can use archery in our PE classes.” The summer PE students are spending 20 of their summer vacation days coming to the class,

but by their smiles on the faces, it definitely isn’t something they regret. Each day that they aren’t involved in a hands-on lesson, the students take a long walk, participate in an activity, a learning session and conclude with some sort of game.

“I really love it,” said freshman Ashly McCall. “I’m learning more about sports and how to be part of a team with other people. I really am enjoying the archery and working on my form. It’s really fun.” Continued on page 2
