Everyone in Rochester has seen it as they drive south down Main Street. The historic Mail Pouch Tobacco advertisement painted on the north side of the building located at 526 Main St. has been around for years.

The building is owned by Dennis Holloway and houses Holloway Electric Motor Repair.

The Mail Pouch Tobacco advertisements historically were more prevalent on the sides of barns. In -painted fact, at one time the hand-painted advertisements could be found on the sides of more than 20,000 barns across America.

According to West Virginia Public Broadcasting, the Mail Pouch barn painting movement all started in a dry goods store in Wheeling, W.Va.,, in the ch came early 1900s when Jess Bloch i on up with the idea to advertise barns along highways. It is reported signs can still be seen today in 39 states across America.

In 2018, an entire wall of a wood shed near Bourbon that had a painted Mail Pouch advertisement was stolen. The thieves removed all the wood planks that made up the sign, which was on a wall that stood approximately 7 feet high and 24 feet wide.

Fortunately, the advertisement painted on a brick wall in Rochester is safe from a similar fate. It is, however, going to get a face lift and refurbishment, thanks to Rochester resident Brandon Eads and his non-profit organization The TRUE Art Company. As part of the organization’s mission, it features a quarterly “Mural Consciousness” program.

“The TRUE Art Company uses its ever-growing family of artists to bring murals to all places of social gathering from business and pleasure to spiritually,” said Eads.

The building, constructed in the late 1880s, has been in his family since the 1960s.

Last Saturday, Eads began the process of cleaning and preparing the wall for its renovation. Since he also has a full-time job in Elkhart, he plans to work on the project in the evenings and weekends, with a planned completion date of no later than Friday, Aug. 6. Sterk hopes to influence others as Akron principal %\ /($+ 6$1'(5 6WDII :ULWHU Being an educator wasn’t an early dream of Scott Sterk’s.

He didn’t really consider it until he had teacher Mike Miller for world geography class at Tippecanoe Valley High School.

“He and I connected and he had a way of correcting people, especially me, but building them up while doing it,” said Sterk. “And even after high school, I saw him sometimes and he would check in with me. Something just clicked and I thought, ‘Boy if he can kind

of help get me on the right path, I’d like to do that for someone else someday.’ ” Sterk has the opportunity now to influence many students through his role as Akron Elementary School principal. He started in that role on July 1.

He comes to the position having obtained his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Indiana University Kokomo, his master’s in curriculum and instruction from Olivet Nazarene University and his principal licensure through Ball State University.

“I’ve always enjoyed being around younger kids, whether it be working with them in Sunday school at church or just within my own family. I’ve just always been drawn to that age,” said Sterk of why he chose to teach at the elementary level.

Sterk has five children of his own with his wife Stephanie: Eli, Anna, Katie, Jack and Zoe. His kids as well as his family history helped influenced his move to the Tippecanoe Valley school system.

“There’s a lot of kind of neat connections for me here,” he said.

“My grandfather (Joe Wildermuth) was a 1940 Akron High School graduate. My mom (Theressa Wildermuth Sterk) was the Akron High School valedictorian in 1965.

My dad (Bert Sterk) graduated from here, aunts and uncles and a lot of family. And those are all kind of neat little stories, but the thing that really drew me here was my children going to school here at Tippecanoe Valley have just had a phenomenal experience.”

“The academics are good, but the teachers and the staff just take care of them as people and genuinely care about them,” he continued. “As a dad watching that happen and seeing the experience my kids have had, especially the last few years, I’ve just been watching that and thinking, ‘Wow, I’d really like to be part of that.’ ” Sterk hasn’t been the only educator in his family. His cousin Jim Wildermuth teaches agriculture in Miami County and grandfather Joe Wildermuth was a teacher, also in

Closure of 9th Street for resurfacing project State Road 25/State Road 14 is being resurfaced between US 31 and Barrett Road. There are three sections to this project, including US 31 to East 9th Street, East 9th Street between Main and Race streets, and East 9th Street between Race Street and Barrett Road.

Adam Parkhouse, director of communications for the Northwest District of the Indiana Department of Transportation, recently wrote to Rochester city officials regarding the project and its impact on the city.

He noted that the first and third sections are standard resurfacings with sidewalk improvements. The sec-

OBITUARIES Darrell O’Dell

United States Army Veteran Darrell O’Dell, 82, Rochester, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at 2:33 p.m.

Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at his home.

On Jan. 30, 1939, Donald Darrell was born in Mishawaka to Donald “Butch” and Erma Mae Fletcher O’Dell. Growing up he shared his childhood with a sister, Patty, and two brothers, Gary and Wade. In '$55(// 1957, Darrell graduated from Argos High School. A 2·'(// stellar athlete, he played guard on the Dragons basketball team, baseball and still holds the school record for the 400-yard dash.

Patriotism beckoned with Darrell answering the call serving our country with the U.S. Army. On Aug. 1, 1959, Darrell and Rose Ann Snyder were married in Argos. From their union came six children. She passed away Jan. 2, 1999.

In the early years, Darrell worked climbing towers for Bontrager’s Construction. Returning from the Army, he began his career as a professional chauffeur for Dr. Dean K. Stinson MD. During those years, he was trained and served as Doc’s phlebotomist during the days house calls were made. In 1976, Darrell transitioned to the United Parcel Service and was known for his reliable, prompt delivery of parcels. Darrell was revered by his fellow colleagues and was always there to assist the rookies of the job.

After more than two decades, he delivered his last package and hung up this khaki brown uniform on Labor Day weekend in 2001.

As a local legend, for nearly a decade, it was said he could be seen in November and December attired in a red velvet suit with a fluffy white beard taking requests from “good” little girls and boys. He allowed them to be seated on his lap, while Mrs. Claus distributed candy canes. Santa was observed visiting area schools, libraries, special events, homes and once at a wedding. On the evening of Dec. 24, he loaded the sled, took to the skies behind eight beautiful reindeer, making many special deliveries to the delight of many children.

On June 16, 1999, Darrell and Susan Carol Meadows Zartman were married in the superior courtroom of Judge Rosemary Burke. They shared 22 years together and enjoyed wintering in Fort Myers, Fla., for 19 years.

While in Florida, Darrell enjoyed the camaraderie, with the new friendships her garnered, especially those buddies at the men’s breakfasts.

With an appetite for travel and passion for Amtrack trains, Darrell and Susan were accompanied by brother Wade and wife Liz on many adventures out west. Favorite destinations were Tombstone, Ariz., and Glacier National Park. There were trips to Vancouver and Victoria. One very special vacation was a train trip to Portland to visit Darrell’s special friend Larry Castleman.

To relax, Darrell enjoyed reading historical fiction and western novels.

His favorite authors were Louis L’Amour and Bill O’Reilly. He also took great satisfaction with mowing and manicuring lawns with great care and precision. Darrell will always be remembered for his charisma, kindness and ice blue eyes that sparkled. Once introduced to a new person, he always regarded all he met as a friend.

Darrell had the highest esteem for his seven doctors/specialists in Rochester and Indianapolis. Beyond his favorites were Dr. Julius Sitjar MD, Dr. Douglas Pitts MD and Dr. Moazzam W. Habib MD. He and Susan are forever grateful for their wisdom, professionalism and wonderful care.

Left to cherish Darrell’s memory are his wife, Susan; two daughters, Debbie Friar and husband Tom of Plymouth and Stephany Edwards and husband Elvis of Plymouth; four sons, Bill O’Dell and wife Kathy of Grinnell, Iowa, Don O’Dell and wife Kim of Argos, John O’ Dell and wife Jessica of Warsaw and Jeff O’Dell and wife Bobbie of Plymouth; 13 grandchildren, Kristin, Michael, Matthew, Ryan, Paige, Peyton, Dustin, Amberly, Brandon, Jonathon, Hannah, Staci and Jordan; nine great-grandchildren, Kaiden, Wes, Sawyer, Rylan, Rori, Scarlett, Grayson, Olivia and Lukas; sister, Patty Rowe and husband Gene of Argos; two brothers, Gary O’ Dell and wife Sheila of Mishawaka and Wade O’Dell and wife Liz of Argos; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Darrell in death are his parents and his first wife.

A celebration of the life of Darrell O’Dell will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31, in The Cross Church, 100 W. 3rd St., Rochester. Friends may visit with the family from 9-11 a.m. in the church. Interment will be in Richland Center Cemetery. Graveside military honors will be conveyed by the Argos, James Lowell Corey American Legion Post 68 Veterans Honor Guard and the United States Army Honors Team.

John Dunn

Retired Indiana State Trooper John Dunn, 73, Rochester, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2021.

John was born Aug. 20, 1947, in Elwood, to his parents, Donald and Emmanell (Small) Dunn. He married Susan Goetz Jan. 22, 2005; they shared 15 years together.

He was a graduate of Sheridan High School, -2+1 '811 class of 1965. He was an Indiana state trooper for 21 years before retiring.

John was a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Post 143. He loved tractors, Massey Ferguson being his favorite. He served as secretary of the Indiana Massey Collectors. In his down time, he enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs. He was a true kid at heart, always very involved with his children; he served as a 4-H leader as well as coached little league when his children were younger.

Those left to carry on John’s legacy of love are his wife, Susan Dunn; mother, Emmanell Dunn; children; Steven (Suzanne) Dunn, Dwain Dunn and Sheri (Shawn) Ramsay; stepchildren, Jennifer (Philip) Santoro and Kathryn (Lance) Stewart; grandchildren, Holly Dunn, Skylar Ramsay and Sierra Ramsay; step-grandchildren, Austin Baxter, Eva Baxter and Philip Santoro; and siblings, Walter (Lynn) Dunn, Linda (Gregg) Kegler, Gary (Debbie) Dunn and Ann Cox. Sheppard finds his way with The Compass %\ &5,6 $/'5,'*( *XHVW :ULWHU (EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the second of a three-part series on Aaron Sheppard, one of the success stories from The Cross’s program The Compass.)

—o— Aaron Sheppard arrived at my office at 4:55 p.m. I welcomed him and his instant smile as we both sat down facing each other. We started with some small talk. I really didn’t know where to start, so I asked about his time in jail, what he was arrested for, etc. We start talking about his recent past, the night he was arrested and how much meth he had on him at that time.

Sheppard talked about that night, the night that changed the rest of his life, for the next several minutes or so. He even recalled the arresting officer’s name. I imagine he thought about that night a lot during his four years in prison.

At one point during our con-

versation Aaron pauses and says, “Wait a minute, you’re not going to put this in your story are you?”

He was reluctant to share such private and, I’m sure, embarrassing information on a public platform. I assured Sheppard that he would see the story when I was finished and I would remove anything that made him feel uncomfortable or might trigger him, as my intention was never to embarrass him. Our intention, which is that of Debbie Fernandez’s, from the local church The Cross, and myself, was to share how well he has done with turning his life around.

We want to share his story and success with others, mainly others with addictions that want assistance but are afraid or too embarrassed to pursue help. Sheppard could be our poster child for hope when it comes to meth addiction.

We want to praise and admire him for how far he has come and continues to go.

After continuing our conversation for a while longer, Sheppard

at one point pauses and says, “You know what, go ahead and share it all. I will be your poster child.”

During our conversation Sheppard mentioned how most of the meth addicts in Rochester would know him because he used to be their dealer. Maybe seeing him turning his life around would help one of them in doing the same. Sheppard stated that if just one person reaches out because of this story, then it will be worth it.

When I asked him what happened to him that made him want to change, beat the addiction and stay sober, his reply

was so honest and unfiltered. He wanted his life back, his family back and he absolutely does not want to ever have to spend another night in prison. In a box, as he called it, with no privacy, no freedom, no contact with his son, whom he hasn’t seen in over four years and misses terribly.

I sit back in my chair for a few to imagine what I would do if I or someone I love had been in his shoes, as I have two sons around his age, but I cannot fathom.

Meth addiction is so rampant that most everyone knows someone or has someone in their own family struggling with this drug.

DNR staff stocked more than 125,000 two-inch striped bass fingerlings in four southern Indiana public lakes and more than 134,000 twoinch hybrid striped bass fingerlings in nine lakes throughout the state. The stockings met or exceeded DNR’s 2021 stocking goals for the two species.

Nyona Lake in Fulton County received 1,040 hybrid striped bass.

Indiana does not have the native sources to spawn striped and hybrid striped bass. DNR relies on commercial sources and state partners to supply fry for its hatchery system. In 2021, East Fork State Fish Hatchery staff developed a new relationship with the Jack D. Bayless Fish Hatch-

Recovery Cafe Rochester hosted a very special guest in the city Wednesday, July 21.

Doug Huntsinger, executive director for Drug Prevention, Treatment and Enforcement for the State of Indiana, also known as the state’s “drug czar,” addressed an audience of around 50 people to talk about the status of substance abuse in the state, as well as what is being done to help combat the problem.

organizations were in attendance to hear Huntsinger, who noted the state needs more crisis centers that can provide immediate aid to those seeking help and treatment, rather than referrals that simply prolong the problem.

Huntsinger added housing is an issue across the state, especially for people with a felony conviction or in some type of recovery situation. He noted the state recently received $200 million to help combat the substance abuse issues some Hoosiers are facing, and his office is working to help determine how that money is best spent.

Recovery Cafe Rochester is one of 27 Recovery Cafe’s in the country. They began 17 years ago in Seattle. Four more are planned to open in Indiana this fall, which would give the Hoosier state the most in the nation.

“Recovery Cafe meets you where you are and who you are,” said Pat Brown, the local organization’s executive director. “No judgement. We’re not here to ‘fix’ anyone — no magic wands here. Just listening, caring and supporting you on your journey.”
