%\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 )HDWXUH :ULWHU For many people, retirement is viewed as an opportunity to travel and to give back to their community through volunteering. RSVP of Fulton County (retired and senior volunteer program), provides a way for people in the county to do just that. RSVP is a national, federally funded program that found a home in Rochester in the early 1970s. The program is for those ages 55 and older, and matches people who want to volunteer with local organizations and businesses who need volunteers. RSVP Director Anne King coordinates around 230 volunteers at approximately 30 locations within the community. “Some people help weekly; some might only do it a couple times a year. Some people have a lot of time to give and some only have a little,” she said. Volunteers can pick and choose how and where they’d like to help, and former career skills and current skill sets are always considered.

“RSVP hosts an annual dinner for the volunteers where everyone’s hard work and service is recognized,” King added. Businesses wanting to be involved with RSVP are required to sign a three-year contract and agree to provide a safe place for the volunteers to do their tasks. Even with the restrictions of the past year, volunteering continued. Volunteer opportunities were plentiful at Compassionate Health Center, the United Way food pantry, Fulton County Historical Society and the vaccine clinic at the community center. Around 15 volunteers currently assist the health department with the vaccination clinic. They help with intake and observation. “We had a lady crochet blankets for Riley Children’s Hospital,” she added, “You never know when something might come up they need volunteers for. Rochester’s such a great town. RSVP provides an opportunity to be active and involved, to meet people, and give back to the community.” RSVP must match 30% of the federal grant that supports the or-

ganization. In addition to funding from the United Way and community donations, RSVP raises the remaining funds by working at the recycling center, selling green carnations on St. Patrick’s Day and taking bus trips. “We put the fun in fundraiser,” King said. King works in conjunction with travel aficionado Donna Riddle, owner of Destinations by Donna. A portion of all of Riddle’s profits support RSVP. “It’s fun to dote on people,” Riddle said. “My parents were older, and I have a lot of love for older people, so this was a natural progression of a love for my parents,” she said of her venture with RSVP. “Hawaii, Alaska, Ireland, Italy – many of these places people would not go themselves,” said Riddle. And she is happy to help make it happen. This year RSVP has three trips planned. People can also choose from day trips and other extended trips Riddle has planned. Riddle is always striving to be the best at what she does, which

includes treating people well by going the extra mile. “When you see someone’s eyes light up because they kissed the blarney stone, or you take pictures of them with the glaciers behind them, it’s wonderful to be part of that.” Riddle also noted many people form lasting friendships and continue to travel together through the program. All of the RSVP bus trips are pre-planned with a travel itinerary. Riddle and King work together to make each trip special, implementing fun and thoughtful touches along the way so everyone can have the best possible experience. The next trip is to Pennsylvania Amish lands, July 25-29, with a theatrical performance at Sight & Sound Theater and guided tours of the Amish countryside. “I really enjoy meeting people and making new friends. And the trips are really fun! Donna has helped me become a better bus trip host,” King said. To learn more about RSVP, contact King at (574) 223-3716.
