Fire truck collecting: A family activity %\ 52' .,1* )HDWXUH :ULWHU As a kid growing up in the South Bend/Mishawaka area Jason Giszewski had a passion for ďŹ re trucks and vowed he would become a ďŹ reman. He made good on his vow and took it to the next level by becoming a ďŹ re truck collector.

During his junior year at Carroll High School he joined the Cedar Canyons Junior Volunteer FireďŹ ghter program.

Cedar Canyons merged with the Grabill Fire Department to form Northeast Fire where he also volunteered. He currently works for the Southwest Fire District located near the airport and is a part-time ďŹ reďŹ ghter with the Butler Fire Department.

His passion for ďŹ re trucks, as he said, “is a labor of loveâ€? that costs him more than it returns.

He has two of them stored in a facility east of New Haven. His ďŹ rst purchase was a green 1995 Seagrave pumper he got from the Novi, Michigan Fire Department. “New it cost $195,000, but I got it at the end of its service for just $5,000 on an online auction site called govdeals.com. It had 80,000 miles on it and was in really good shape. All it needed was a little TLC. “My other one is a ladder truck that was owned by the Flora, Indiana Fire Department. When new in 1963 it cost the Purdue University Fire Department $58,000. I paid $5,000 and it only had 12,000 miles on it! The day it was taken out of service, my wife, Melissa, and I drove down there and brought it home. That was a fun trip. “Obtaining parts is more difďŹ cult as the trucks get older.

Collecting ďŹ re trucks (he’s also part owner of a tiller truck) has spawned a couple of related side hobbies. One is collecting ďŹ re truck emblems and the other is collecting die-cast Code III Collectables in 1/64th and 1/32nd scale. “I have more than 500 emblems from truck manufacturers across the country. There used to be 400 companies making ďŹ re trucks. Now there are only about 100. My goal is to mount them all on the wall when I get my own storage facility. “The ďŹ re trucks,â€? said Giszewski, “are more than just a hobby.

It has been very educational for our sons, Jonathan, 12, who has his own set of tools, and Jacob, 7, who says he wants to be just like me. They’re learning a lot about engines and mechanics. Melissa sometimes drives the trucks. “Being a ďŹ reďŹ ghter today is more than just putting out house, business, ďŹ eld and car ďŹ res,â€? said Giszewski. “Eighty percent of the job involves EMS runs for elevator rescues, senior citizens who have fallen and a variety of work accidents. Robert Pastoorâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;s work in academia doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take place in the classroom %\ -$&/<1 <28+$1$ *$59(5 )HDWXUH :ULWHU One summer in the early 1970s, Robert Pastoor took a class from his father at George Mason University: advanced expository writing. He saw a side of Dad heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d never seen before. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He was so passionate in the classroom,â&#x20AC;? Pastoor says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was just not something I saw living with him. I loved every minute of it â&#x20AC;&#x201D; until he gave me my ďŹ nal grade.â&#x20AC;?

Dr. Pastoor gave his son, who is the vice president of student affairs at the University of Saint Francis, a B+. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I had to explain to him, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Every paper Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve written has gotten an A,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; but he said it wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t look right to give his son such a high

grade,â&#x20AC;? Pastoor says.

Pastoor has taught, like his father, but the majority of his work in academia is, and has been, on the nonacademic side of things. He oversees, for example, Saint Francisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; athletics program, safety and security, Resident life. The TRiO program, which provides tutoring and support for students with disabilities or ďŹ rst-generation college students and peer mentoring.

Pastoorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s role and goal is to help assure students have a wellrounded experience in college. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a ďŹ rm believer that at least 50% of what students learn while theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re enrolled happens outside the classroom,â&#x20AC;? he says.

Pastoor was born in the Netherlands. His father was named a Fulbright scholar, which

Due in part to growing up with a professor father, Pastoor wanted to teach, too. In college, he studied to become a history teacher. He did get his degree in education, but he was also a resident advisor in college.

He enjoyed the experience, but, at the time, a job on the nonacademic side of an educational institution didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really exist yet. He returned to college for his masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in counseling and he served as the residence hall director, which is considered an entry-level position for his career.

He moved up the chain just as a career in student affairs was becoming a possibility.

Pastoor started in his current position in January 2020, after a stint as interim student affairs vice president in 2017-18. Prior, he served as the president of St. Joseph College from 2015 until it closed in 2017. Sister M. Elise Kriss, who retired as St. Francis president in June 2020, knew of Pastoorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s background in student affairs and she offered him the interim position.

One of Pastoorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite parts of the job is the variety of duties; he never knows what will pop up on his calendar. On a recent day in December, Pastoor ran through some past to-dos, such as overseeing the administration of COVID tests. The university received them unexpectedly from the Independent Colleges of Indiana, which represents the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 30 private, nonproďŹ t, regionally accredited universities.

He learned about the free tests the Friday before Thanksgiving break and he oversaw their administration that Monday.

Each year, Pastoorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goal is to do everything he can to make studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; out-of-classroom experience at St. Francis the best possible. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For me, the highlight of my year is when the students return to campus,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Summers are dreary when theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not here.â&#x20AC;?

What’s so funny?!

My wife and I have been getting along so well during the pandemic, I don’t think we realize how unhappy we are. I don’t ,1 $ mean un1876+(// happy with %\ ',&. each other; I :2/)6,( mean antsy from being home all the time.

We are more hunkered down now than we were in early summer. Mary Ellen has decided that with the increased COVID cases during the holidays, I should not be popping in and out of stores. I will follow this advice because I do have an

underlying condition: I’m scared to death of her.

To keep the romance alive, I have tried very hard to make sure Mary Ellen is aware that I am staying involved with whatever she is doing. For example, if she is looking at something on the computer and says “Awww…,” I’ll ask: “What’s so cute?” At that point she asks me to scoot my chair over and look at the YouTube video. Of a kitten. And I watch it. For. Six. Endless. Minutes.

If she is downstairs on the treadmill watching a show on her iPad and I hear her laughing uproariously, I trudge down to the lower level and ask her, “What’s so funny?”

Let’s say it’s a Grace and Frankie episode. She’ll patiently describe to me the entire set-up,

which is something no person can really ever successfully accomplish. But I giggle anyway.

That’s what good husbands do.

The other day, I realized she seldom asks about my own audible reaction to videos or something I am reading. For example, recently we were sitting next to each other on the couch while I looked at my laptop at an amazing story. At one point, I belted out: “Wow, that is really weird.” There was no reaction, no apparent curiosity to see what had triggered that response from me. She just continued with whatever she was reading.

Minutes later, as a little experiment, I tried a different tack. “Oh dear!” I exclaimed, looking directly at her, “this is just terrible news.”

No response. Her eyes remained focused on her own material. I tried again. This time I burst out laughing.

Ha ha ha ha ha…HO! (I threw in that extra HO! just for the Christmas season. Still nothing.)

One final try. While watching a video posted on social media, I pretended to cry. Bawling my eyes out. Mary Ellen was sitting right next to me, still concentrating on something. When I got no response, I said: “Mary Ellen, I’ve been sobbing for two minutes. Don’t you want to ask me something?”

“I’m sorry. Do you want a tissue?”

He and Vandermotten purchased White Tiger from Drake in 2000. It moved around town in several locations before settling permanently on the second ďŹ&#x201A;oor of the historic 1913 building 15 years ago. The building was originally the New Haven City Hall and is now headquarters for the chamber of commerce. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I do have a concern sometimes when all the students are jumping and kicking that the ďŹ&#x201A;oor in this 107-year-old building will hold up. So far, so good!â&#x20AC;?

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, his good friend and eighth level black belt John Milligan comes to teach students the Chinese martial arts discipline tai chi and the use of self-defense weapons like the bo staff, sai, kama, tonfa and the nunchaku, which are two 18-inch sticks joined by a rope or chain. Rose Francis keeps setting new goals on putting one foot in front of the other %\ -$&/<1 <28+$1$ *$59(5 )HDWXUH :ULWHU In 2021, Rose Francis plans to walk 2,021 miles. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the distance from Fort Wayne to Joshua Tree National Park in California.

Note the verb: She plans to walk it. Due to a hip replacement in 2021, Francis is more the determined tortoise than the speedy hare. If 2020 and 2019 are any indication, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a near certainty sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll achieve that goal.

Francis, of Fort Wayne, ďŹ rst participated in a run/walk challenge back in 2014, the Galloping Gobbler, with her kids. A naturally competitive person, Francis kept trying to beat her previous yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time each year at the fourmile Thanksgiving day race.

Then, in 2018, she joined a training group to see if she could push herself to complete a 10K. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d always done a 5K,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That was pretty easy. I thought Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d step it up.â&#x20AC;?

Once Francis began to post about her races on Facebook, more and more race-related information popped up in her feed, including the Run the Year challenge, which calls for participants to convert the current year into miles and run or walk that distance. Participants can cover the mileage on their own or as part of a team, so Francis joined up with her two children to run or walk 2,019 miles in 2019. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I ended up with 1,800 miles on my own,â&#x20AC;? she says, nearly 90% of the goal. She thought, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Maybe

next year, I can try it by myself.â&#x20AC;?

In 2020, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d run 2,020 miles

by November. Her distance includes both intentional steps â&#x20AC;&#x201D; those she walked speciďŹ cally to meet her goal â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and other steps, such as, say, walking around work or across the parking lot to her car. In 2,021, however, she plans to add a further challenge: Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to count only intentional steps, which averages 5.5 miles a day. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about the distance from the Fort Wayne International Airport to Fox Island County Park.

Additional races help with Francisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s yearly goal, too. Because sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a walker, it can be tough to ďŹ nd a half- or full marathon with a long enough time limit to allow her to ďŹ nish. Enter the Air Force Marathon, in Dayton, Ohio, where the half-marathon has a seven hour time limit.

She and a friend met in Dayton that September 2019 weekend, competed in the 5K on Friday and raced together for portions of Saturdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s half-marathon. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I ďŹ nished it and I was excited.

It was just such a high,â&#x20AC;? Francis says, and it whet her appetite for more marathons.

One unexpected beneďŹ t for Francis of virtual everything in 2020 was the lack of time limits on virtual marathons. Instead of gathering with crowds to cheer on racers who were competing with one another along the same course at the same time, participants in a virtual race can cover their distance in their own time,

Walking, especially in 2020, has been something of a savior. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get my walks in, I get kind of ouchy,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Having to be in lockdown and not being able to do the things we normally do, at least Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been able to maintain this. It has become my sanity saver.â&#x20AC;?

AIHS receives NCQA accreditation renewal award Aging and In-Home Services of Northeast Indiana received a renewed three-year National Committee for Quality Assurance Long-Term Support and Services accreditation for its case management program.

AIHS was the first Area Agency on Aging in the United States to receive this level of accreditation in 2017.

The NCQA LTSS accreditation is awarded to organizations who meet the framework to deliver efficient, effective person-centered care that meets people’s needs and helps keep

people in their preferred setting and aligns with state requirements. This framework helps support organizations like AIHS to continue improving its case management offerings.

NCQA evaluates organizations in areas such as: conducting comprehensive assessments, managing care transitions, performing personcentered assessments, planning and managing critical incidents, and measurement and quality improvement.

AIHS has demonstrated that they can be trusted partners

in coordinating LTSS services. This accreditation allows AIHS to focus on coordinating premier care, helping to reduce errors and duplicated services, and improving communication between individuals, caregivers, providers, payers and other organizations that coordinate care.

NCQA is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health care quality.

went into production, Dozier read through numerous “Batman” comic books — he had never read a comic book in his life — before admitting, “I had just the simple idea of overdoing it, of making it so square and so serious that adults would find it amusing and kids would go for the adventure.”

The series was the ultimate DC Comics adaptation for the small screen. Unveiled as a sometimes satirical, sometimes slapstick sitcom, “Batman” starred Adam West as businessman Bruce Wayne/Batman. West (born William West Anderson) earned a B.A. degree in literature, then worked as a military radio announcer and a milkman before becoming a TV and movie actor. Burt Ward, a karate expert and former standout high school athlete, was attending college and working in his father’s real es-

tate office when, just out of his teens, he earned the sidekick role of Dick Grayson/Robin.

(In the process, Ward beat out future TV star Lyle Waggoner.)

Batman and Robin were crime-fighting goofballs who defended fictional Gotham City against a plethora of preposterous villains who were always involved in exaggerated situations. The “Dynamic Duo” heroes took these situations seriously, of course, which of course added to the merriment.

TV’s “Batman,” the only prime-time laughathon without a laugh track, was developed on the most ridiculous of premises: Two costumed and masked vigilantes were working hand in hand (or hand in glove) with a bumbling police department that was constantly baffled by the bad guys. The ingenious story lines featured simplistic morality in a humorous vein.

In each episode, Batman and Robin pursued dubious clues that revealed the supervillain’s plans and, in the end, always saw the pair capturing the evildoer.

The producers brought in as many wicked foes as possible, including the now-iconic Riddler (Frank Gorshin, John Astin), the Penguin (Burgess Meredith), the Joker (Cesar Romero) and Catwoman (Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt).

The popularity of the first season’s show generated an avalanche of “Batman” merchandise, which included trading cards, scale-model Batmo-

bile kits, coloring books, board games and Hot Wheels cars.

The series offered 120 actionpacked half-hour episodes. In time, however, the novelty of the show began to wear thin and, by the end of the third season, “Batman” had lost much of its Batluster. Eventually, “Batman” winged its way to lucrative Syndication Heaven. Later, Hollywood producers would try to create their own comics-based TV series by offering “The Green Hornet,” “Dick Tracy” and “Wonder Woman,” but by then the burned-out viewing public simply wasn’t buying it.

Where do you start 2021?

Right from where you are â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and nobody wants to look back at 2020 because we are not going there again.

So, where are you at? Did you manage to eat healthy over the holidays? Kinda, sorta? No matter now as that is so last year â&#x20AC;&#x201D; we are starting from here â&#x20AC;&#x201D; this day, this spot. If you are still harboring baked goods, sweets or anything ooey-gooey, throw it out. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give it away as no one should be eating it, just throw it out.

We need to reset our taste buds to get rid of the urge for salt, sugar and the â&#x20AC;&#x153;little somethingâ&#x20AC;? after each meal (you know what I mean). A really quick, fun and yummy way to do that is whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s called the 50/50 plate, or on Facebook the page is called Fifty Fifty Plate.

You take your plate and imagine a line down the middle and then ďŹ lled one half with low starch vegetables and fruits and the other half with higher starch vegetables. They can be hot, cold or mixed. Give this some thought â&#x20AC;&#x201D; you will be eating fruit and low starch veggies on one half, which is going to displace the calorie density from the other half of high starch items such as potatoes, beans and grains.

Eating this way for as little as four days will reset your taste buds to not crave the unhealthy, high calorie foods which may have been consumed during the holidays.

Low starch choices are plentiful and may include about 60 foods of which a few are: broccoli, cauliďŹ&#x201A;ower, carrots, all greens, celery, mushrooms, onions, cabbage, lettuce, tomatoes, asparagus, beets, green and yellow beans, zucchini and fruit.

The higher starch choices would be: potatoes (no oil), sweet potatoes, corn, lentils, beans and intact grains.

The possibilities are endless on how you could ďŹ ll a plate with all these items. If you want seconds, go right ahead, but you should still maintain the 50/50 rule so you shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a second sweet potato unless you also have more low calorie density

You could also combine them by making a vegetable soup that has potatoes or beans in it or a mega salad loaded with veggies and topped with beans or a grain. I will often put a salad on one side of my plate and sweet potato with mushrooms on the other side. Chinese veggies over brown rice would work out well as a mixed plate, too. Sometimes simple is the best.

Use fruit as a base for dessert When you think of dessert,

you might automatically think about chocolate, caramel and sugar. Yet demoting these cornerstone sweets to the toppings or sides can reduce calories without eliminating taste.

Instead, try sweet fruits, like strawberries, cherries and raspberries. Add a small amount of dark chocolate (which has less sugar than regular chocolate), whipped cream or sweeter toppings to make it a treat.

Pub (short for â&#x20AC;&#x153;public houseâ&#x20AC;? or bar in England) rock was a musical genre popular in the UK during the early to mid1970s. Loud and raw, its primitive approach to the music ďŹ&#x201A;ew in the face of the more reďŹ ned â&#x20AC;&#x153;glamâ&#x20AC;? style. (Think Queen and David Bowie here.) Pub rock laid the foundation for punk rock that came later in the decade.

Born in Cardiff, Wales, in 1944, Edmunds had drifted through several bands since age 10, when he and older brother Geoff formed a rockinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; piano team called the Edmund Brothers Duo. Edmunds later played in a series of minor league bar bands.

His ďŹ rst taste of success came as the lead guitarist in the Welsh rock trio Love Sculpture, which scored a British Top Five single with the rapid-ďŹ re instrumental â&#x20AC;&#x153;Saber Dance.â&#x20AC;? When the group disbanded, Edmunds turned to record production and worked with English rockabilly artist Shakinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Stevens, whose material was often culled from classic 1950s American recordings. This is when Edmunds became aware of â&#x20AC;&#x153;I Hear You Knocking.â&#x20AC;?

So had Edmunds perhaps heard the earlier hit version by an American woman? Gale Storm (born Josephine Cottle) was the pert, pretty and squeaky-clean star of the 1950s TV show â&#x20AC;&#x153;My Little Margie.â&#x20AC;? In 1955, she scored a No. 2 Billboard winner with â&#x20AC;&#x153;I Hear You Knocking.â&#x20AC;? Stormâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest career hit was a blanched offering of an obscure R&B (rhythm and blues) tune from earlier that year. Stormâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;coverâ&#x20AC;? 45 was typical of many such releases at the time; major record labels frequently brought in white artists to copy R&B best-sellers, which were usually released on small independent labels, in order to target record-buying teenagers with allowances to spend.

While Edmunds may or may not have heard the Storm disc, he was

probably more taken with the gritty original, a little-known recording

by Smiley Lewis. Louisiana native Lewis (born Overton Lemons) was once labeled by a music journalist â&#x20AC;&#x153;the unluckiest man in New Orleans.â&#x20AC;? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not hard to see why.

Often when Lewis performed in

Big Easy bars, he was handed only money from the tip jar. He usually rode to gigs on city buses after toiling all day at manual labor.

Smileyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nickname came from his having no front teeth.

During his recording tenure, Lewis cut a few R&B winners, but

three of his most popular became pop best-sellers for others. Besides Stormâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s smash, Smileyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;Blue Mondayâ&#x20AC;? from 1954 became a Top 10 single by Fats Domino two years later. And Lewisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;One Night (of Sin)â&#x20AC;? was cleaned up in 1958 to provide Elvis Presley his 27th Top

40 success.

Val Vorndran makes sure there are enough volunteers for St. Mary Mother of Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Catholic soup kitchen %\ -$&/<1 <28+$1$ *$59(5 )HDWXUH :ULWHU The winter evenings were dark and cold, a contrast to the bright kitchen with the warm stove. When Val Vorndran was 12 years old, she attended Bible study at her church, St. Mary Mother of God Catholic Church in Fort Wayne. Father Tom Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Connorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rectory faced an alley and sometimes that doorbell would sound. Not to the front door, mind you, but the alleyway door.

Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Connor answered the door and Vorndran would hear him speaking softly to whomever stood outside. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d go to the refrigerator, make a sandwich, bless the strangers outside and send them on their way, sandwiches in hand. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As a 12-year-old girl, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re so self-involved and I thought that was really cool that he was doing that,â&#x20AC;? Vorndran says.

In those days, there was no

St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Soup Kitchen â&#x20AC;&#x201D; just the occasional hungry person looking for a bite. The kitchen didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t open until 1975, and Vorndran quite literally saw its inception and birth. Today, she is the kitchenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s volunteer coordinator, a title sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s held for more than 20 years.

At the start, the soup was made in the rectory. Vorndran remembers her mother would wash out old peanut butter jars and cottage cheese containers for the kitchen. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d ďŹ ll the tubs and freeze the soup to pass out.

Today, the kitchen has two 60-gallon kettles and a walk-in cooler and freezer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We can serve so many more people,â&#x20AC;? says Vorndran, of Fort Wayne. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re able to do so much more.â&#x20AC;?

The kitchen estimates that it serves more than 300,000 meals a year, consisting of soup and bread daily and milk three times a week.

Vorndran, however, never considered stopping. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a hairdresser by trade at nursing homes and hospitals,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I got furloughed right away because of COVID.â&#x20AC;?

Meanwhile, the soup kitchen saw a lot of new faces this year, perhaps, Vorndran ďŹ gures, because of COVID. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Seeing that, I knew the need was going to be great,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We needed to step up our game.â&#x20AC;?

After volunteering at St. Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s for so long, the beneďŹ ts are plentiful. One of the best things? She has become friends with a number of the clientele.

If they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t show up for a week, she worries about them.

And she knows they appreciate the kitchen, too. She tells of a recent client, a man in his late 50s. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He pulled his wallet out and pulled a dollar and handed it to me and started crying. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d do without you guys. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all I have. I want you to have it,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People truly do appreciate (the soup kitchen).

Tiny Gasparilla Island is almost paradise Just what is it that draws â&#x20AC;&#x153;snow birdsâ&#x20AC;? to Gasparilla Island, Fla. every winter?

It could be that the temperatures during *5($7 January, (6&$3(6 February %\ 52' .,1* and March range from the mid-60s to the mid-80s under blue, sunny skies. Perhaps itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the wide, deep, white sand, shell-strewn beaches that stretch the entire length of the island along the beautiful pristine, greenishblue Gulf of Mexico. Could it be the trendy little village of Boca Grande with its boutique shops, eclectic restaurants and yummy, hole-in-the-wall ice cream shop?

Actually, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all of the above.

The narrow island, which is

just a half-mile wide and only seven miles long, is accessible by a series of three bridges extending from the mainland where SRs 775 and 771 intersect. Cost to enter the island on Boca Grande Causeway is $6, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a small price to pay to experience paradise.

First people to inhabit the area were the Calusa Indians around 5000 B.C. and on Gasparilla Island between 800 and 900 B.C. Nine ancient ďŹ shing village sites have been identiďŹ ed with large shell mounds containing pottery shards, ďŹ shhooks and arrowheads.

Like the Indians, the ďŹ rst white settlers came to ďŹ sh in the 1870s. Spanish and Cuban ďŹ shermen salted and sent their catches to Havana and other markets. The island quickly became a sport ďŹ shing mecca and later earned the title of the Tarpon Fishing Capitol of the World.

Hailing from Decatur, Pendy Selbring, with husband Ken Selbring, toted a Senior Life on their trip to Metamora, Batesville and Oldenburg for a spring getaway. Pendy is pictured in front of the Ben Franklin III, a horse-drawn wooden canal boat located in the historic town of Metamora. Part of the Whitewater Canal State Historic site, the original Ben Franklin was used as a freighter constructed of wood and fiberglass. Its predecessor now offers 25-minute cruises along the canal, passing thorough a wood aqueduct, 16 feet above Duck Creek.

The Duck Creek aqueduct is the only one still in service in the country. The tour, happening Wednesdays through Sundays, May through October, also includes vistas of Duck Creek and a restored canal lock, one of 56 that aids in the canalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 491 foot drop in elevation.

Metamora also boasts of its working Grist Mill, open on Wednesdays through Sundays, April through mid-December. It has produced meal and flour for more than 100 years. Many charming shops, eateries, B&Bs and attractions fill this old-timey town. If the flag outside the establishment is flying, it means the shop is open and ready for business. Most are open on weekends May through December. Many come to see the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Old Fashioned Christmas Walk holiday-themed festival.

Whitewater Valley Railroad offers a Valley Flyer train for visitors staying in nearby Connorsville, wanting to take a quick jaunt into Metamora. The heritage railroad also operates a 2-mile excursion, taking visitors to see the sights along the restored canal. The trains run weekends and other special times.

If nature is more your style, the Metamora area offers 2.6 miles of a hiking and biking trail, camping, cabins, canoeing and 700 acres of wooded trails for horseback riding lovers.

mous pirate Gasparilla (aka Jose Gaspar) had his headquarters on the island and purportedly buried an enormous treasure here. Many came with shovels in hand to dig it up and become rich, but, if there was one, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s still hidden. Around 1900, the whole pirate myth was exposed as a marketing ploy by the hotels and railroad to get visitors to the island.

In 1905, the railroad connected Boca Grande to the outside world and the island became the terminal for the phosphate shipping industry. Trainloads of the ore arrived every day and were off-loaded at the port at the southern end of the island into ships for transport around the world. The railroad also brought tourists, many of whom stayed to make Boca Grande their home. When the phosphate shipping business dried up in 1979, the islandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s primary industry became tourism.

President George Bush and his family found the island to their liking and often stayed at the Gasparilla Inn and Club, which is one of the largest and oldest resort hotels in the state.

It was built in 1913 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home to the Loose Caboose Restaurant and where islanders can choose from more than 15 ďŹ&#x201A;avors of ice cream from a closet-size, walk-in/carryout shop. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s usually a line of people seated on the low wall along the sidewalk outside enjoying their treat.

Another must-see is Banyan Street. Huge banyan trees with their vine-like roots dropping from above line both sides of the block-long street forming a tall, shady tunnel that is at least 10 degrees cooler than the surrounding area. At the southern tip of the island is Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum which highlights the islandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history and culture.

Three MKM projects receive ARCHie Awards for historic preservation Three MKM architecture + design projects have received ARCHie historic preservation awards from ARCH, a Fort Wayne nonproďŹ t dedicated to celebrating, protecting and preserving architecture and community heritage in northeast

Indiana. ARCH has presented historic preservation awards for over 40 years, recognizing the preservation efforts of individuals, businesses and institutions.

MKM projects that received awards are: The Landing, Fort Wayne; Eckhart Public Library,

Auburn; and Auburn City Steakhouse, Auburn.

The Landing, preserving seven historic buildings, received a Preservation Partnership Award. The award recognizes the success and impact of the project. The mixed-use rede-

HUD awards 13 public housing authorities in Indiana $1.3 million U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson awarded approximately $78 million to hundreds of public housing authorities across the country, including nearly $1.3 million to 13 housing authorities in Indiana to help HUD assisted residents increase their earned income and reduce their dependency on public assistance and rental subsidies.

Under Carsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leadership, more money has been allocated to the Family Self-SufďŹ ciency program in ďŹ scal year 2020 than at any other point in the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history.

The Fort Wayne Housing Authority was one of the 12 housing authorities in Indiana to receive funds. It was awarded $148,174. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Putting people on the path to self-sufďŹ ciency by helping them ďŹ nd jobs and increase their earned income is an essential part of HUDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission,â&#x20AC;? said Carson. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This funding is a good example of how federal and local partnerships work to help connect families to jobs and educational opportunities to help them become a success.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;This funding will empower individuals and their families across Indiana to get them on a path towards self-sufďŹ ciency

and prosperity to attain their God-given potential,â&#x20AC;? said Joseph P. Galvan, HUD Midwest regional administrator.

HUDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Family Self-SufďŹ ciency program funding helps local public housing authorities to hire service coordinators who work directly with residents to connect them with existing programs and services in the local community. These service coordinators build relationships with networks of local service providers, who provide direct assistance to FSS participants.

The broad spectrum of services made possible through FSS enables participating families to ďŹ nd jobs, increase earned income, reduce or eliminate the need for rental and/or welfare assistance, and make progress toward achieving economic independence and self-sufďŹ ciency.

Participants in the program sign a ďŹ ve-year contract of participation requiring the head of the household to set speciďŹ c goals and achievements allowed under the FSS Program. To successfully graduate, the head of household must be employed and no member of the FSS family may have received cash welfare assistance for 12 months prior to program graduation.

Families in the FSS program have an interest-bearing escrow account established for them. The amount credited to the familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s escrow account is based on increased rent due to improvement in the familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s earned income during the term of the FSS contract. Upon successful graduation, the head of household receives the escrow funds and are able to apply those funds to advance their personal circumstances, including, for example, paying educational expenses or making a down payment on a home.

Many of the FSS awards are to public housing authorities with units in opportunity zones. Created under the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, opportunity zones aim to stimulate long-term investments in lowincome communities.

HUD did not receive applications for FSS renewal funding from every eligible PHA with an existing FSS program. With approximately $2 million in remaining 2020 funding, HUD plans to issue a supplemental notice of funding opportunity, inviting those eligible PHAs with FSS programs to apply competitively for the residual 2020 funds.

Floaters are in the eyes of the beholder ... usually %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV When it comes to ďŹ&#x201A;oaters, the eyes have it. These eye specks and clouds can be a brief diversion or stubborn irritant.

No one really knows why.

We do know that they usually affect folks starting in their 50s. They are cells or bits of vitreous material that can drift through the eye ďŹ&#x201A;uid for lengthy periods or fall slowly to the ďŹ&#x201A;oor of the eye where the brain will ignore them.

Floaters are generally seen as harmless. But they can be harbingers of serious eye conditions such as a retinal tear or detachment, which is a serious threat to your eyesight.

Floaters may also signal diabetic bleeding of the eye or a blocked blood vessel. They often appear after procedures to eliminate cataracts; in that case, they could be detritus from the procedure.

They can resemble small ďŹ&#x201A;ashing lights, strands of thread, dancing black spots, small dirt-like clumps or misty swirls.

At the ďŹ rst sign of ďŹ&#x201A;oaters, visit your eye doctor so she can give you a thorough examination and determine a course of action. This can range from just ignoring them because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re harmless to serious surgery to repair damage. In some cases, laser treatment can zap the spots out of existence.

Most oldsters have experienced these ďŹ&#x201A;oating phenomena. Some say they just quit what theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing and do something different for a few moments and the ďŹ&#x201A;oaters disappear. Others get up and do a bit of exercise to get rid of them. Many soothe their eyes with a washcloth or towel soaked in warm water.

If they crowd in while youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re working at a computer, lowering the brightness of the screen helps them disappear.

Sunglasses soften their edge if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re outdoors.

Not all ďŹ&#x201A;oaters are ďŹ&#x201A;oaters.

Flashes of light or zigzags zipping across your vision can presage migraine headaches.

Closing one eye at a time can help identify the cause.

If you see something different in each eye, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s likely you

have the less perilous ďŹ&#x201A;oaters.

Harmless ďŹ&#x201A;oaters can take a lot of getting used to. But eventually you will stop noticing them as much.

Community Harvest Food Bank grant helps Turnstone feed individuals with disabilities Thanks to a grant from Community Harvest and Feeding Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s COVID-19 Response Fund, Turnstoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s social services department has been able to provide food vouchers for individuals with disabilities and their families during the global COVID-19 pandemic. The Community Harvest COVID-19 Relief Grant was distributed to agencies who serve demographics disproportionately affected by the pandemic resulting in food insecurity.

As one of 60 grant recipients in Allen County, Turnstone was able to use the awarded funds to distribute both Community Harvest Food Bank vouchers and Meijer gift cards to 30 families. Grocery store gifts cards helped increase accessibility to food with the transportation and dietary restrictions that individuals with disabilities experience. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are so grateful to have this grant to help our clients and families with their needs surrounding food insecurities,â&#x20AC;? said Turnstoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Director of Social Services Kathy Baer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This grant has allowed us to help many more adults and children than we are typically capable of assisting. In the United States, individuals with disabilities are twice as likely to be living in poverty as those without disabilities. Since many people with disabilities live in poverty, this population is also at a higher risk for food insecurity. Turnstone annually serves 3,400 children and adults with disabilities, with 60% of those individuals living below 200% of the federal poverty level.

Turnstoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s case managers and licensed social workers are uniquely equipped to offer access to support from this grant to the individuals and families who need it most. The recipients of the food vouchers and grocery gift cards were ecstatic and relieved to have their most basic needs met during an uncertain and discouraging time.

Voelkmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s retirement made me think, as we end our working years, we imagine how retirement will look for us personally and dream of a happy, rewarding and meaningful period of life.

ment Center about downsizing. Talking to a few of the retirees before the presentation, one of them made the statement that their way to downsize was to have a garage sale, only to realize that one of their prize possessions ended up selling for 5 cents.

During my presentation I retold his story and I talked

about the fact that people who go to garage sales are looking for a bargain (there is nothing wrong with that), but what happens is every item becomes a negotiation.

I talked about selling items through Craigslist and Facebook, the time involved and the safety issues. Lastly we talked about auctions, speciďŹ cally online auctions.

In todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s culture we seem to always be short on time, taking three or four hours to attend an auction can be challenging. At one point in

the presentation I held up my iPhone and said this is the new computer of today.

With todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s technology people can be in a car riding to Indianapolis (please donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t bid and drive), and at the same time be placing bids on personal property or real estate. We have had people from all over the U.S. and in Europe purchase items through our online auctions.

It is a fact that 90% of all homebuyers start on the internet shopping for a home.
