Railway Garden volunteers aid staff in EULQJLQJ WUDLQ KLVWRU\ WR OLIH 7H[W DQG SKRWRV %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU That Railway Garden at Gabis Arboretum at Purdue Northwest is more than just a huge train set. It’s a testament to the dedication of staff and volunteers who’ve been working to open historical dioramas operational by May. “I like the historical vignettes,” said Dave Simkowski, operator of the Railway Garden that was dedicated June 4, 2011. “It shows the history of the country from 1860 to the 1920s.” Specifically, the dioramas depict the impact of steam locomotion on this country. This includes the Civil War, Lincoln’s funeral train, Native Americans, prairie and farm towns, lumber camp, limestone quarry,
coal mining, urban center and stockyards. Simkowski, other staff and volunteers were repairing, repainting and touching up figurines brought in for winter. A basement workshop is loaded with more trains, figurines and other materials for the Railway Garden. “We’re really dependent on volunteers,” said Simkowski, a Valparaiso resident. He’s been at the railway site for nine years, having started as a volunteer. Chatting with a visitor from Alabama, Simkowski noted the number of train set fans who stop by. He thought about getting into miniature trains, “but it can get quite expensive,” he noted. “That’s why I’m enjoying this one.” Two volunteers enjoying the train site are Mark Pleitner of
Valparaiso and Ray Wilkinson of Crown Point. Pleitner, a volunteer for four years, describes himself as a “handyman who likes getting involved in these projects.” Pleitner has dabbled in model trains, adding, “I enjoy this one.” For the record, the Railway Garden boasts 3,100 feet of track, 850 tons of Missouri limestone, 14 feet of elevation change, 1,486 cubic yards of soil, seven train loops, room for 12 train engines, 30 handcrafted wooden and metal bridges, six water features cycling 120 gallons of water per minute, and hundreds of dwarf and miniature conifers. Wilkinson, a pharmacist, has been volunteering for nearly a decade. “I like sitting around, watchContinued on page 2
