Therese Hoger of Dyer decided it was the perfect opportunity to tackle a fun project and fulďŹ ll a promise she had made to one of her granddaughters. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My granddaughter Abigail, liking Dum Dums so much growing up, decided to save the wrappers. I promised I would make something

for her to wear one day,â&#x20AC;? said Hoger. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So, with plenty of time on my hands during the pandemic, I committed to ironing her collection and decided to make a dress.â&#x20AC;?

Once she got started, Hoger said it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take her more than a week to iron out the wrappers and put it together. Her granddaughter knew she was working on something, but Hoger didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t reveal the details.

When she ďŹ nished, she had used 180 wrappers of 36 different ďŹ&#x201A;avors. Her granddaughter was wowed when she saw the ďŹ nal product. Even without taking exact measurements, Hoger

managed to get a perfect ďŹ t. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I started collecting when I was in third grade because my teachers used to give them to anyone who answered questions correctly. I would save them and collect from other kids in the class when they got an answer right,â&#x20AC;? said Abigail Martin, 19, of Cedar Lake.

Many years ago, she told her grandmother sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like for her to make her a prom dress out of the wrappers.

Martin ended up graduating a year early from high school and so she didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t attend her senior prom. But in Continued on page 2

year, we’re sponsoring a pajama day combined with a food drive to benefit the Salvation Army in all three schools,” she said. “We also honor two Munster High School seniors each month as our Students of the Month. We invite them to our meeting, present them with a certificate, invite them to tell us about themselves, their interests and activities and their college plans and treat them to lunch.” Of those students who have been honored as Student of the Month, two or three are selected each year for scholarships from the club.

Moore has been involved with other activities as a club member. These include ringing the bell for the Salvation Army during the holiday season and, with the major fundraiser of doing shifts outside a local grocery store, accepting contributions and handing out gummy bears to donors. She has been participating in Munster’s National Night Out Against Crime each August.

“During my term as president, I’ve lined up many of the speakers we’ve had at our meetings,” said Moore. “I make all the arrangements for our meetings. I send out email reminders, take

Carol Moore accompanied a friend to a Munster Kiwanis Club meeting back in 2004, and it prompted her to join the service organization.

She’s been a member ever since. This year, she is serving her fifth one-year term as the club’s president. Moore is the first woman to serve as president of the Munster chapter.

The Munster Kiwanis Club started in 1963.

“It is a global community of clubs with members and partners dedicated to improving the lives of children, one community at a time,” said Moore. “Kiwanis clubs work on service projects designed to benefit their communities.”

Moore has taken part in a number of projects with the club over the years. The club sponsors the K-Kids Clubs in Munster’s three elementary schools, which are completely independent organizations.

“We work with the principals and teacher/sponsors to encourage civic leadership through service projects.”

Munster Kiwanis hosts a K-Kids Family Dance each year around Valentine’s Day. “Since we can’t do that this

reservations and interact with Giovanni’s, which is our preferred meeting location.”

Due to the pandemic, many of the meetings have been on Zoom.

“During the summer and warmer fall months, we met in a local park. Although we miss Giovanni’s, we did enjoy box lunches and/or pizza in the park,” said Moore.

Being part of the Munster Kiwanis Club is a joy because of the camaraderie, according to Moore.

“I really enjoy the camaraderie that exists within our club. I appreciate the relationships we have with town government as well as other civic and social organizations in town,” she said.

Moore grew up in Hessville.

She graduated from Bishop Noll Institute and then earned her Bachelor of Arts from Indiana University in Bloomington and her Master of Arts from Purdue University-Calumet. She’s been married to Dave for 53 years and the couple has three children and five grandchildren.

She works as a freelance theater critic. She attended press openings at almost all of Chicago’s theaters and posting reviews at her website, www.spotlightonlake.

Two letters were returned %\ :22'52: :,/&2; On Dec. 14, two letters were returned to me at our office in Merrillville. The letters had been sent to a medical service using one of the addresses on the bill to our client.

When I send a letter to help one of our clients with a Medicare-related medical bill problem, I regularly send it to more than one address of the medical biller. I do this for several reasons. Often, one address is for the service that mailed the bill and another address is for a bank service to receive and cash payments.

Also, I question the client whenever possible. I search the internet or make phone calls to find the correct person or department that could help fix a medical bill problem. Sometimes, letters get returned despite the fact that I used the address that was right on the bill.

Having a returned letter with markings from the U.S. Postal Service is clear evidence that our client tried to contact

a medical biller. If there is a problem with getting the bill resolved, I have evidence that the biller used a false address to contact our client and ask for a payment.

Having this evidence shows that I really made a good effort to help our client and that the medical biller caused the problem with resolving the bill. This evidence is very useful if I need to help the client complain to a government official.

All the help that I give to clients of our agency is free of charge. This agency is proud of our reputation for “going the extra mile” for our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to an insurance agency that does? Our agency does.

“It’s amazing that she put all that time and effort into it and it’s a dress I can actually wear,” said Martin.

“I absolutely love it and I can’t thank her enough. It’s got wrappers of flavors they don’t even make anymore.

I couldn’t have asked for anything better. I just can’t believe how she did it. She’s the best.”

Sewing isn’t Hoger’s only talent. She also has a love of dollhouses and has a knack for making her own furniture and accessories for the houses. Over the years, she has acquired 18 that fill her basement and each of her

children and grandchildren have one customized for them.

“It’s a fun three generation thing now,” she said of her dollhouse hobby. Some of the houses were constructed by her brother, so it extends even farther into her family.

She’s gone as far as making her own dishes to resemble the set of dishes her mother had when she was a child and even making the food that is placed on top of them.

Hoger retired from Manor Care, where she worked in billing. She has two daughters, three granddaughters and two grandsons. When she isn’t busy sewing, crafting or creating pieces for her dollhouses, she loves to spend her time reading.

Vernon and Gloria Gast of Wanatah have been married 51 years. They met at McGill Manufacturing in Valparaiso,

where he was a machine operator, and she was a machine inspector. As Gloria recalled, “I started inspecting him.”

The couple was married Dec. 13, 1969, at Vernon’s parents’ farmhouse in Porter County. A little more than a half-century later, they have three children, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

“When there’s a job to do, we work on it together,” Gloria said.

Staying together over 51 years, the couple agrees, involves open communication and loving unconditionally.

“He puts up with a lot and is very easygoing,” Gloria said.

“I’m more of the impatient one.”

“Always be ready for the unexpected,” Vernon added.

Another key, Gloria said, is “knowing how to forgive those who have hurt you. We’ve all been hurt and it’s hard to forgive.”

James Killian, principal therapist and owner of Arcadian Counseling in New Haven, Conn., agrees that communication is key for spouses. One key to communication, Killian said, is being a good listener.

“First, start caring more about your partner,” Killian said. “When you care for someone, you are truly interested in what they have to say.

“Second, when they are speaking, don’t think of other things. Just simply listen to them. Give them your full attention.”

Even communication cannot prevent challenges. With all that’s happening today, Vernon

Gloria noted, “Everybody’s different and we all have our ways of doing things. You have to give up that mindset of me and think of how others might do it.”

While Vernon has learned he “can always change with what goes on around me,” Gloria said she has learned: “I need to be more patient.”

After 51 years, the couple has relied not only on love, but also that they like each other.

As Gloria said, “We’ve grown in our marriage and are still growing.”

“We’ve grown a lot the last 51 years, growing together,” Vernon added.

Calumet Heritage Partnership annual conference amplifies diverse Calumet voices The Calumet Heritage Partnership’s 21st annual Calumet Heritage Conference put a national spotlight on the Calumet region’s local heritage in a multiday event with scholars, artists, museum professionals and advocates.

The event was held virtually Oct. 17-22. It was recorded in its entirety for viewing online at Calumet Heritage Partnership’s YouTube channel or Calumet Heritage Area website.

This year’s conference theme was Calumet Voices/National Stories and it brought together some of the diverse voices that collectively tell a story of national significance of the Calumet region. Presenters spoke about their own efforts to save and interpret the region’s heritage and

illuminated stories of those who built the Calumet region and the living landscape that now is inhabited.

Conference sessions began with a philosophical exploration of Gary’s City Methodist Church’s becoming a ruins garden, followed by a “couch tour” of the region’s most endangered landmarks. Presentations continued with the Calumet Voices/National Stories exhibition series: the rescue and housing artifacts from the shuttered Acme Steel Plant, the natural and cultural heritage of an artesian well in Gary, Gary’s legacy as an arts mecca, and Tuskegee Airmen’s beginnings in Robbins, Ill. The closing session brought together muralists, who restored Blue Island’s storied Mexican

“The pandemic forced us to do a virtual event, which allowed us to highlight an even more diverse range of topics and presenters than we would have been able to offer in our past one-day live events. With nearly 200 registered attendees, we believe it was a remarkably successful event. We may offer some virtual sessions in future conferences to continue to reach broader audiences,” said Karen Brozynski, Calumet Heritage Partnership president and board president of Southeast Chicago Historical Museum.

The Calumet Heritage Partnership works to enrich lives through stewardship and interpretation of the Calumet Region’s heritage. The partnership is a bistate partnership of environmental organizations, historical societies, arts organizations, libraries, educational institutions, government agencies and businesses working together across political and cultural boundaries in the Calumet region of Illinois and Indiana. In collaboration with the Calumet Collaborative and The Field Museum, the partnership leads an effort to designate the region as a Calumet National Heritage Area.

Hospice chaplain deals with death and dying in pandemic %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Allen Wright recalled a woman visiting her husband in hospice. Due to COVID-19, she had not been able to see her spouse for three months.

Two days after the visit, the husband was dead.

These days, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not unusual, said Wright, one of two chaplains at VNA Arthur B. and Ethel V. Horton Hospice Center in Valparaiso. He and Ben Pohelmus have been VNA chaplains since 2019.

Taking the approach that all people are mind, body and soul, the chaplains work to connect families with their faith communities or assist them on their faith journeys as a loved one is dying.

Wright said the chaplainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s job has changed, as society has changed. That includes wearing masks, no access to nursing homes and no in-person contact. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We understand itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tough for people always isolated. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a lot of isolation,â&#x20AC;? Wright said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People are really distanced and that creates emotional problems.â&#x20AC;?

A former Wesleyan pastor for 25 years, Wright worked in substance abuse before becoming a chaplain.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We try to partner with families and offer them hope and peace,â&#x20AC;? Wright said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Being with them, we learn a lot.â&#x20AC;?

As to making sense of life and death amidst a pandemic, Wright, a Chesterton resident, calls that the â&#x20AC;&#x153;million-dollar question.â&#x20AC;? He tries to not focus too much on everyday news, which he ďŹ nds â&#x20AC;&#x153;really discouraging,â&#x20AC;? and turns to his own faith for answers.

A popular Scripture passage for Wright is John 14:1-6, 27.

Prior to the Ascension, Jesus, sensing anxiety in his apostles, tells them, â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are many rooms in my Fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house and I will prepare a place for you â&#x20AC;Ś I am the way, the truth and life; no one goes to the Father except by me.â&#x20AC;?

Then, in a later passage suggested by Wrightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s granddaughter, Jesus tells his followers, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you, I do not give it as the world does â&#x20AC;Ś Do not be afraid.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Jesus knew real anxiety and he was going to prepare a home for the apostles in heaven,â&#x20AC;? Wright explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The peace he was giving was different. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about faith and having peace.â&#x20AC;?

Taking that message to hospice, Wright said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;For now, I always try to encourage care-

givers. I see people alone. Even before COVID, there were people dying alone.â&#x20AC;?

Wright wants family members and caregivers to know they are making a difference, whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dealing with the lonely, the sick and the isolated. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For caregivers, I try to support, encourage and thank them. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re working 24/7, carrying that load. Often they think, have I done enough? I try to give them a sense of being appreciated.â&#x20AC;?

Speaking from his faith perspective, Wright wants relatives to know there is reason, even these days, for hope. â&#x20AC;&#x153;God offers hope beyond this life,â&#x20AC;? the chaplain said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If we were robots with no hope, that would be pretty discouraging. Speaking from the lens of faith, I see every person as a unique creation of God and that person is going to live on beyond this life.â&#x20AC;?

I used to love going to the movies with my wife, going out to dinner with ,1 $ my wife and 1876+(// going food %\ ',&. shopping :2/)6,( without my wife. She is meticulous about what she buys and spends more time squeezing a melon then I spend picking out a new car.

When I did go with her to a grocery, she was judgmental about my choices. No matter what I would sneak into the cart, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d notice those items at the checkout. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when I would hear one of three things: 1: Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll never eat that. We threw away the last two bags.

Return that to the shelf, please.

2: If you buy that horrible snack, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll just eat the whole thing and hate yourself. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

put that back in the candy section.

3: Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been a jar of that in the fridge for a year. Please, take it back.

Then I would have to go around the store, trying to ďŹ nd where things belong. After a while, the store personnel recognized what I was doing during each visit. Dang security cameras! â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hi, Mr. Wolfsie. Doing a little reverse shopping again today?

Not to be critical, but last week, we saw you cram some pop tarts on top of the energy bars. We found a dozen glazed donuts stuck in between the everything bagels and the seven-grain bread. Please donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t confuse the other husbands in the store who are lucky enough to be shopping alone.â&#x20AC;?

Mary Ellen is now doing all her food buying online. With the pandemic, she thinks this is a much safer approach, so I have been forbidden to wander around any stores on my own.

Subscriptions can be nasty issues. Just because you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t read the recipes or do-ityourself projects that pile up in your mailbox doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean the charges stop. If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cancel these subscriptions, the charges may mount in a joint account and demolish your credit rating.

Security problems can make this issue more complex.

As Taupin once explained, â&#x20AC;&#x153; â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Your Songâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; was one of the ďŹ rst songs we wrote when we really got locked into writing and when we had really honed our craft.â&#x20AC;? And it all began one morning in 1969 at Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; London apartment, when Taupin scribbled the words to the future classic on a grubby

sheet of lined exercise paper that had tea stains on it.

Food waste solutions from garden to table A two-part program, focused on food waste in the United States and how its enormity impacts the environment and natural resources, will take place this month.

Rebecca Koetz and Linda Curley, extension educators, will provide ideas for mindfully reducing food waste in the garden and by supporting local food systems. This program will also address food waste in the home and focus on managing food sustainably in order to save money, manage resources wisely and conserve for future generations.

were jamming in a band called Bluesology. Included among the musicians were sax player Elton Dean and singer John Baldry â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the inspiration for Dwightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future stage monicker.

Dwight eventually left the group and later answered an ad from Londonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Liberty Records, which had announced auditions for songwriters. He wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hired â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Dwight could easily create melodies but choked when it came to writing lyrics. On that fateful day in Libertyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce, though, he met another creative hopeful, 17-year-old Bernie Taupin. A school dropout farm worker without music-making skills, he could write poetry â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and song lyrics â&#x20AC;&#x201D; thanks to constant encouragement from his literature-loving mother.

Now calling himself Elton John, he and Taupin began working together, with Taupin

penning sets of lyrics and John creating piano melodies appropriate to the words. If nothing came to fruition within a few minutes, John would summarily toss Taupinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attempt into the trash and move on to the next offering.

The duo employed this unorthodox way of working throughout most of Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s remarkable career.

John remembers his reaction when he ďŹ rst considered the words to â&#x20AC;&#x153;Your Song:â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I sat down at the piano and looked at it, going, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Oh, my God, this is such a great lyric, I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t (mess) this one up.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; It came out in about 20 minutes and when I was done, I called him in. And we both knew.â&#x20AC;?

Taupin had never been in love or even in any meaningful relationship, so his â&#x20AC;&#x153;Your Songâ&#x20AC;? lyrics reďŹ&#x201A;ected a refreshing innocence about such

a heady experience: â&#x20AC;&#x153;I hope you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mind that I put down in wordsâ&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;How wonderful life is while youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in the world.â&#x20AC;?

John eventually signed with Britainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s DJM Records label and in 1969 recorded the LP Empty Sky. It went nowhere, but his second album, John, the next year featured â&#x20AC;&#x153;Your Songâ&#x20AC;? and thus held the key to success. Haunting and delicate, the tune worked its way into the public consciousness and, in January 1971, it reached Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Top 10 list on the Uni Records label.

After that, John included â&#x20AC;&#x153;Your Songâ&#x20AC;? in virtually every live concert of his career.

When asked to explain the work that led to acclaim for the pair, Taupin answers in fewer than a dozen well-chosen words: â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is a simple, naĂŻve song. And it still stands up.â&#x20AC;?

Lifelong passion for hockey keeps â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Old Puckerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on the ice %\ &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU

It makes me proud to see how they have come back to the game that they love and how the game of hockey disciplined them and helped them get to where they are in life.â&#x20AC;?

Jeremka grew up in the Chicago neighborhood of Roseland, where organized hockey was out of the budget. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I came from a modest Roseland family, so league hockey was too expensive for me to play,â&#x20AC;? he explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I skated at our local parks in the winter and occasionally we would rent the ice at Glenwood Ice Arena on a Saturday morning for all my friends and schoolmates to play on a regulation ice surface.â&#x20AC;?

At age 7, he began skating and he has never stopped.

When he got married in 1982, he said he was ďŹ nally able to afford to participate in a league and started playing on a team at the Homewood-Flossmoor Ice Arena. Jeremka said his wife has always been supportive and never asked him to quit or slow down. Their daughter also spent time on the ice as a

Ice hockey may seem like a sport that is limited to young guys with the nonstop, fastpaced motion on the ice and hard physical contact. But once itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in your blood, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to turn off that passion for the sport. Thomas Jeremka is part of the club. He skates with the team in Dyer on Monday and Friday nights. He also skates occasionally at an ice arena in Crestwood, Ill. And while he no longer coaches, he enjoys playing together with his son, Brian, 41. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My coaching days are long over,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I coached my son in the Mite, Pee Wee, Bantom, high school and college levels. Now we skate together on the Old Puckers Hockey Club. We have several young men that skate for us that I have coached in high school.

ďŹ gure skater. They have two granddaughters that do open skating with their grandfather and they have a 3-year-old grandson that they expect to be on skates very soon.

What Jeremka said he most loves about the game is the amount of exercise one can get in during an hour of ice time. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You can ride a bike, go to the gym, run, jog or power walk and never get the cardio workout that you can get on the ice,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Plus, hockey players are humble and giving and all the guys and girls that I skate with are my close friends. We have a family bond that cannot be broken. I have been skating with some of these people for 30 years or more.â&#x20AC;?

As much he loves to play, he also loves being a spectator and taking in a game, whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s at the NHL level or a junior or high school team at Midwest Training and Ice Center. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Those kids are trying so hard to get a college or high level scout to just notice them and maybe give them a scholarship to attend a college and get

His drive for the game at his age isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t uncommon, he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I get calls every week from guys and girls who want to be part of our group,â&#x20AC;? said Jeremka. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People want to get a good workout and be part of a family that cares about each other and gives back to the community.â&#x20AC;?

The team has players ranging from 30 to 70.

Hockey once shared a place in his life with baseball. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I was a kid I went

to every professional baseball tryout on the south side,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was lucky enough to play with guys like Ron Kittle and the late Kevin Hickey, who both played for the White Sox. I actually played hardball until three years ago.â&#x20AC;?

Jeremka works as a technical service representative for a company that offers support to heating contractors. He said a lot of his contractors are associated with the hockey club, either skating in the club or supporting related charities.

CHS adds second distribution site for a COVID-19 vaccine With the arrival of Modernaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coronavirus vaccine, Community Healthcare System, based in northwest Indiana, has expanded the vaccine clinic availability in Lake County currently at Community Hospital in Munster. The health care system has added a second vaccination clinic at the Community Stroke and Reha-

bilitation Center. The center is located at 10205 S. Priority in Phase 1A is being given to licensed and unlicensed health care workers, those who work directly with patient care, including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, physical, occupational and speech therapists, pharmacists, imaging technologists, laboratory technicians, social services workers, environmental services staff, case management, nontraditional providers such as doulas and midwives, pastoral care staff, dental providers, emergency medical services and nursing students. Through this ďŹ rst phase, Community Healthcare System is responsible for vaccinating not only the internal staff, but also health care personnel in Lake, Porter, Jasper and Newton counties as well.

Building layers of flavor in meatless stew

A pot of hearty stew on the burner simmering for dinner brings back great memories of time gone by when every meal was prepared from scratch. This meatless stew is amazing and I promise you will not notice that there is no beef in the pot.

It is just as satisfying as your momma use to make and with a little crusty bread on the side â&#x20AC;&#x201D; yum.

The recipe I found turned out delicious, but I am not totally fond of recipes that say 1 onion instead of ½ cup or better yet 85 grams. I like decisive measurements, but with stew, if you chop everything about the same size it all works out in the pot. The way that this recipe builds ďŹ&#x201A;avors

step after step assures the deep richness of the broth in the end. The ingredients are all the basics and, as I reviewed them, I found I had everything except the quantity of mushrooms needed. Total time was about 80 minutes, (if I had chopped my potatoes smaller it may have been less), which may seem long, but this is more than one meal and it is down-home tasty.

So just plan a time and enjoy making this hearty stew soon â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it will warm you to your toes.

Hearty Vegetable Stew Ingredients 1 small onion (minced) (I used 85 grams) 1 clove garlic (minced) 1 rib celery (minced) (I used 55 grams) 1 carrot (minced) (I used 85 grams) 1/4 cup low sodium vegetable broth 1 large onion (chopped) 8 ounce button mushrooms (sliced) 8 ounce portobello mushrooms (sliced) 1 teaspoon dried rosemary 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning 1/2 cup red wine (or broth, grape juice) (but the wine really

adds a good ďŹ&#x201A;avor) 3 cups low sodium vegetable broth 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper 1 can diced tomatoes â&#x20AC;&#x201D; no salt added (15 ounce) 2 medium carrots (chopped) 2 ribs celery (chopped) 2 Yukon Gold potatoes (chopped) 1 can tomato sauce (8 ounce) 1/2 teaspoon Kitchen Bouquet (optional for color) (may sub with Soy Sauce or Worcestershire) 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon cornstarch (I ended up using 2 tablespoons, but start with 1) 1 cup frozen peas Instructions 1. Mince the carrot, celery stalk and small onion very ďŹ ne.

(I used a small food processor.)

2. Saute this mixture in 1/4 cup of veggie broth until the veggies are nice and soft.

3. Add the large chopped onion and continue cooking until softened.

4. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s OK if the liquid gets a little low â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the brown bits add to the ďŹ&#x201A;avor.

5. Add the mushrooms and cook on medium high until they

6. Season with the rosemary and Italian seasoning.

7. Add the wine and deglaze any brown spots in your pan.

(This is the good stuff.)

8. After a few minutes add the rest of the broth, the tomatoes and tomato sauce.

9. Add all your chopped veggies and turn the heat up to boil.

10. Add the rest of the seasonings â&#x20AC;&#x201D; but not the cornstarch.

11. Once itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s boiling, turn down the heat to low and add the peas.

12. Mix the cornstarch with a tablespoon of cold water and stir this in to thicken.

13. Simmer to desired consistency.

We will be one of only a handful of hospices in the state with this designation.

Merrillville resident will turn 100 years old this month A longtime Lake County resident is turning 100 years old this month. Mary (McDonald) Ferguson is celebrating her 100th birthday.

She was born Feb. 17, 1921, in Sydney, Novia Scotia, Canada. She moved to Gary with her family in 1923. She attended St. Mark Grade School in Gary, Lew Wallace High School and Gary Business College.

At 16, she met the â&#x20AC;&#x153;love of her life,â&#x20AC;? Walter Raymond Ferguson, and they married in 1939. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We both lived through the Great Depression. Those were very hard times. The day Pearl Harbor was attacked, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the day the Depression was over. All the steel mills, factories, everything opened up again. All the industries made war materials. No cars, no furniture, no appliances or tires. Gas and almost every-

thing was rationed.â&#x20AC;?

When the war started, she took a job at the National Tube Mill in the metalurgical lab and worked there until the war was over. Her husband was drafted in the Navy when their sons were 2 and 3. He served throughout the war in the PaciďŹ c.

After the war, her husband enrolled in education studies at Valparaiso University and graduated June 1950.

He was then employed

by Valparaiso schools and was assigned to Cookâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Corner School, where he served one year as a principal and teacher. He then took industrial engineering training and worked at P.R.

years ago.

The couple earlier purchased a 10-room house in Valparaiso and rented out the ďŹ ve upstairs rooms. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how we could afford for Walter to attend college all those years,â&#x20AC;? she recalled.

Sadly, she said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;My world came to an end (I thought) when he died of a brain tumor Nov. 8, 1965.â&#x20AC;?

However, she still had two sons, Walter Jr., now 80, and Ronald, who is now 79.

Walter Jr. was a foreman at the U.S. Steel Coke Battery for many years and also worked in the Bop Shop. Ronald was a tool and dye maker at the Budd Company, Gary,

as well as Shelbyville, Ky. Today, Walter lives in Fort Myers, Fla., and Ronald lives in Waddy, Ky. She has six grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

After her husband died, she had to work full time. She took many jobs in the Calumet region. She was a bartender for almost 20 years at places, such as Travelodge, Gary Country Club and Ramada Inn. She later worked at the Merry Bowl for 12 years. Her last 14 years, she worked at Life Uniform Shop at Southlake Mall.

She still has a lot of spirit, strength and a lifelong work ethic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If I had two good legs, I would still be working some place, or I would be volunteering because I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel like Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m going to be 100 in February,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Many folks choose to rely on a family member or co-worker for ďŹ nancial guidance rather than open their books to total strangers such as tax consultants, ďŹ nancial advisors and investment counselors. The problem is, there is no source of ďŹ scal guidance that is ďŹ nancially foolproof.

And anybody who claims

they can guarantee any amount of return on your money is either a fool or a felon.

Keep in mind that there is an entire industry built around forecasting the ďŹ nancial future. So pay little attention to them.

A recent example: the failure of economists to foresee the biggest ďŹ nancial collapse in seven decades, which shattered fortunes in 2008. Nor did they anticipate the robust market recovery.

Putting together a savings strategy should be kept simple: 1. Assemble a portfolio of steady long-term funds that

can be reviewed and adjusted yearly.

2. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t rely on snagging a high-ďŹ&#x201A;ying stock. Play the stock market just as you would any casino game â&#x20AC;&#x201D; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a gamble.

3. Patience pays. Stick with your plan and keep in mind that the investment ride is a continual series of ups and downs. Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t panic when money matters turn bleak and your nest egg shrinks. History indicates time is on our side.

For example, investing $100 at 4% gets you $150 in a decade.

4. Build a long life into your plan. You may not live as long as you think, but running out

of money before you die can kill you.

There are other steps you can take to ensure a sound economic future: 1. Buy insurance to cover disability and medical costs that can chew up your nest egg.

2. Pay off any and all debt, including credit cards, mortgage and automobile loans.

3. If you buy a vacation home or cottage on the lake, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t try to convince yourself itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an investment. Look at it for what it is â&#x20AC;&#x201D; something you bought to make life comfortable for you and your family.

4. Take a long look at the pros and cons of retiring in another part of the world because youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve heard living costs are more economical.

Just moving to another part of the country has its hitches.

You have to change doctors.

Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re moving away from friends and family.

If you pick another country, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll also have to get used to different customs and culture, as well as explore its tax rules and regulations, medical facilities and cost of living, and an array of other day-to-day matters.

The second-most famous smile Though you may not know it, Harvey Ball has had an impact on your life.

Harvey Ross Ball was born in July 1921 in %\ 5$1'$/ Worcester, & +,// Mass., one of six children. After graduating from Worcester South High School, he became an apprentice to a local sign painter and

later studied ďŹ ne art at the Worcester Art Museum School.

Following World War II, he worked for a local advertising ďŹ rm until 1959, when he started his own advertising business.

In 1963, a phone call from a Worcester client, The State Mutual Life Assurance Company, changed Ballâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and in time added to the popular culture of America and many countries around the globe. The insurance outďŹ t had recently experienced a hostile takeover merger with an out-of-town

competitor and employee morale was low and sinking lower. Could Ball come up with some kind of quirky design that would be fun to look at and consequently lift spirits around the ofďŹ ce?

Ten minutes later, he had created a bright yellow circle with black oval eyes, with the one on the right slightly larger than the one on the left and a creased, slightly off-center smile, the right side being a bit higher and a bit thicker than on the left. Ball was paid $45 â&#x20AC;&#x201D; about $350

Lake County Public Library named a 2020 Star Library The Lake County Public Library has been named a 2020 Star Library by Library Journalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Index of Public Library Service. The Library Journal Index rates U.S. public libraries based on selected per capita output measures.

the country received a star designation. Lake County Public Library was only one of ďŹ ve libraries in Indiana that received a Star Library status.

The State Mutual folks produced and handed out 100 smiley pins to its employees, the goal being to encourage workers to smile while doing humdrum tasks around the ofďŹ ce such as chatting on the phone with customers.

Smiley buttons later became so popular with the general public that they were eventually being ordered in lots of 10,000 each. By 1971, more than 50 million smiley buttons had been produced. Ballâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s creation had become recognized around the world as an American icon.

So was Ball able to retire early, purchase a yacht and sail off to retire in a beachfront villa on a tropical island? Well, actually, no. He never applied for a trademark or a copyright of the smiley Face and State Mutual made nothing from the design either. Ballâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son, Charles, always maintained that his dad never regretted not registering the copyright.

Charles Ball claimed that Harvey Ball wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t motivated much by money.

Ball did, however, have an incentive other than cash. In 1999, he founded the World Smile Foundation, a nonproďŹ t charitable trust that supports childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s causes. The outďŹ t now licenses smileys and runs World Smile Day, an event celebrated on the ďŹ rst Friday in October each year.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a day that emphasizes the slogans â&#x20AC;&#x153;Do an act of kindnessâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Help one person smile.â&#x20AC;?

Harveyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s smiley is now said to incorporate the most famous grin since the Mona Lisaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

It covers just about every aspect of Lincolnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time in Washington and ends at Fordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Theater April 14, 1865, where he and his wife, Mary, were relaxing and celebrating the end of the Civil War before his assassination. His body was returned to SpringďŹ eld by train along the same route he took to Washington four years earlier.

The train station where he departed for the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s capital is just a few blocks south.

Before boarding the train, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quoted as saying, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I now leave, not knowing when or whether ever I may return, with a task before me greater than that which rested on Washington.â&#x20AC;?

A few more blocks south is the Lincoln Home National Historic Site featuring the only home he ever owned.

The four-block area is full of period homes. During summer months reenactors add life to the neighborhood.

Lincolnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery houses the body of the president, his wife and three of their four sons and a number of statues in various poses. Lincolnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nose on a big bronze bust in front of the monument is shiny from rubbing by visitors from throughout the world.

Located in the far left of the photo is Sydneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tallest building, The Sydney Tower Eye at over 1,000 feet. The Eye offers tremendous views of the area and a chance for the â&#x20AC;&#x153;so inclinedâ&#x20AC;? individuals to rappel down from the 850 feet level!

In the center of Koenigâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s photo is the Sydney Opera House. Known for it stunning architecture, the Sydney Opera House is one of the most recognizable buildings of the twentieth century. This multi-venue performing arts center hosts well over 1,500 performances annually, attended by more than 1.2 million people. Visitors can also procure guided tours of the building.

Behind Koenig in the photo is the famed Sydney Harbour Bridge, nicknamed â&#x20AC;&#x153;the coat hangerâ&#x20AC;? for its shape. This bridge is nearly 4,000 feet long and 440 feet high. Again, for the adventurous, guided walking tours on the bridge trusses can be purchased to reach the very top of the span on a 3 1/2 hour round trip. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Needless to say, I enjoyed the views, with-

The 7th Cavalry, Lake County and Pvt. Smith %\ 3$6725 *5(* /$:621 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU (EDITORâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S NOTE: This is the ďŹ rst part of a two-part series.) â&#x20AC;&#x201D;oâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; Many people today may not be familiar with the fact that quite a few men from Indiana were associated with General George Armstrong Custer in one way or another.

Within the book, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Men With Custer: Biographies of the 7th Cavalryâ&#x20AC;? by Kenneth Hammer, is one entry that connects Lake County with Custer and the 7th Cavalry.

A mystery of sort deals with Henry G. Smith who was born in Lake County in 1849. Not every member of the 7th Cavalry died at the Battle of the Little Bighorn

on June 25, 1876, as many 7th Cavalrymen were on assignments away from the battle site.

Records in Hammerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book show that Smith â&#x20AC;&#x153;enlisted on Sept. 8, 1875, at age 26 in Chicago by Lieutenant Edmund Luff.â&#x20AC;? It is interesting to learn that before enlistment, Smithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s occupation was that of a butcher somewhere in Lake County.

After Smithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enlistment, we learn that he was assigned to â&#x20AC;&#x153;Company Dâ&#x20AC;? as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;private.â&#x20AC;? It appears that Pvt. Smith was in some sort of a â&#x20AC;&#x153;hilltop ďŹ ghtâ&#x20AC;? prior to the Little Bighorn as Hammer records in his research.

Evidence in Hammerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book shows that Smith was not at the Little Bighorn, nor was he killed there as he was â&#x20AC;&#x153;appointed farrier on Aug.

1, 1876, to replace Vincent Charley.â&#x20AC;? (Refer to part two to ďŹ nd out why Smith replaced Vincent Charley.) Note: A farrier is one who shoes horses.

Unfortunately, Hammerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s research reveals that Smith â&#x20AC;&#x153;deserted on Feb. 19, 1877.â&#x20AC;?

Further research by Hammer revealed that Smith â&#x20AC;&#x153;had gray eyes, brown hair, dark complexion and was 5 feet 9 inches tall.â&#x20AC;?

It is not known if Smith ever returned to Lake County or if he was ever found. It is further not known when or where Smith died or where he is buried. Hammerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book was published in 1995 and lists Smithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death as unknown.
