Low-cost animal vaccine clinic coming to Rochester %\ .(,7+ .1(33 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU Anyone who has owned a pet knows that to properly care for it is an expensive proposition. Not only do they require regular trips to the store to pick up a bag or cans of food, endless kitty litter, toys and treats, but maintaining their health through regular veterinary care is necessary to ensure your furry companions live long, comfortable and healthy lives. As part of the consequences resulting from the pandemic of 2020, many families were required to make difficult financial decisions. When it came to their pets, for some, that meant surrendering them because they simply couldn’t afford to keep them. For others, it meant cutting back or eliminating their trips to the veterinarian for annual checkups and vaccines.

Fortunately for area residents, the team at the Fulton County Animal Center saw the need and, thanks in great part to a generous $20,000 grant from the Belcher Family Fund, FCAC Executive Director Janet Showley announced the opening of a new low-cost vaccine clinic for dogs and cats, designed to help bridge the gap to accessible pet health care. The vaccine clinic will help fulfill a community need that can be often be overlooked. According to the Fulton County Community Foundation which administered the grant, Suzanne Belcher loved and appreciated the Animal Center and encouraged supporting their efforts. Showley said the vaccine clinic will be open from noon until 3 p.m. two Sundays each month. Anyone is welcome to utilize the service, regardless of where they reside. Currently, the service is

available by appointment only by calling FCAC at (574) 2237387. Appointments are still available for the first date, which will be Sunday, May 2. The clinic takes place at the animal center, located at 1540 Wentzel St., Rochester. Showley noted people will eventually be able to reserve appointment times online. The vaccinations will be administered by Dr. Jessica Collins from the Bourbon Veterinary Hospital. It is important to note they will not provide diagnostic services to the animals brought to the vaccine clinic. If problems are detected, the pets will be referred to a veterinary office for treatment. The vaccine clinic will offer a wide variety of options, depending on the needs of the pet. Many of the services are bundled together to provide for the most common needs. However, if specific vaccines are needed, there

also is an a la carte menu from which to choose. A complete list of services offered is available by visiting www.fultoncoanimalcenter.org/low-cost-vaccineclinic. “In the past, we’ve done rabies clinics,” said Showley. “Last year we did a drive-thru clinic. This is a part of our non-profit mission, which is keeping pets healthy and getting people affordable and accessible pet health care which allows them to keep pets in their home.” Showley also noted anyone who provides proof of government assistance, such as food stamps, Social Security disability or SSI are eligible for 15% off their visit, adding donations to the center and the low-cost vaccine clinic are always welcome. “We want to make sure the animals are getting what they need to lead long and healthy lives,” Showley concluded.
