Valpo woman loves making a difference in role with Salvation Army %\ &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU Rooted in Christian faith, the origins of the Salvation Army go back to the 1850s when William Booth began taking the gospel to the poor, homeless, hungry and destitute in the streets of London.

His mission became known as the “Salvation Army” and spread quickly throughout Europe and the United States. Today it serves 131 countries with a mission to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

Angie Kalin of Valparaiso joined the Salvation Army’s Porter County office in 2018 as development director, where she said her favorite part of the job is “absolutely seeing the difference we make in people’s lives for the good.”

After graduating from Ivy Tech in Valparaiso, Kalin moved to Arizona where she continued her education, earning a B.A. in industrial/organizational psychology. Kalin’s family moved to Valparaiso when she was in high school and although she’s lived

in many places — from Arizona to New Orleans to Jackson Hole, Wyo. — she said Valparaiso has always been her “home base.”

Before working with the Salvation Army, she worked in education and management, including for a four-university system where she helped people attain their college degree.

“I had moved back to the region after living in Arizona,” said Kalin. “In applying for jobs I saw this role and became excited to be a part of a nonprofit with such a deep history and one that helps so many people in our Porter County communities.

“A very important part of my job is to make sure people know we are in Porter County. The two main reasons in getting the word out are, first of all, to make sure people who need help know we are here for them, and secondly, to make sure donors know where and how their donations are used. Money raised in Porter County stays in Porter County to help our local communities.”

Duties of her job include everything from recruiting volunteers and advisory board members, grant writing, community involvement and miscella-

neous office tasks.

While her favorite part of the job is making a difference, the most challenging aspect is “being witness to some of the hardships that people face. Sometimes there are situations that are beyond our scope but we still give them all we can, and do all we can do.”

The rewards of the job are many and she cherishes the gratitude that comes from clients they are able to help.

“It never fails, when I’m at an event or meeting a donor or volunteer, I hear many stories of why people love The Salvation Army,” Kalin said. “For example, we have Christmas volunteer bell ringers who ring the bell at our Red Kettles every year in memory of a parent or relative who was helped by us at a point in their life that set them on the right track. The volunteers enjoy commemorating their loved ones’ memories and feel they are giving back so we can continue to help someone else like we did for them.”

“I enjoy ‘the dig’ and learning about history,” she said, adding that she’s an “art geek,” loves reading and board games and is the proud parent of a Marine.

“The Salvation Army motto is ‘Doing the Most Good,’” said Kalin. “I like to point out where

that comes from, because it gives the motto a deeper meaning. Evangeline Booth, daughter of Salvation Army founder William and Catherine Booth, once said, ‘There is no reward equal to that of doing the most good to the most people in the most need.’”

On a recent Sunday afternoon there were people of varying ages enjoying a number of different activities. Some were coming off the course in golf carts or power walking around the lake or stopping to enjoy the new art installations or enjoying a picnic under the pavilion or watching their dog cool off in a pool in the dog park or riding a bike or jogging up the fitness stairs or fishing. After polling a number of visitors about the park, one word came up in nearly every conversation: “Peaceful.”

The Szafranski family of Munster are regular visitors to the park and enjoy visiting to walk their dog, Paisley. “This is a four-season park which can be used to bring families together

and away from their electronic devices,” said Philip Szafranski.

“We’ve been coming here for a long time. We’re here every Fourth of July and we visit weekly,” added his son, Colin.

“There are so many options of activities.” Colin and his wife, Klarissa, were married in June and had a photo session taken in the park on their wedding day. It’s also a popular destination for photographers, whether taking family photos, graduation photos, prom photos or engagement or wedding photos.

Nathan Szany of Munster uses the park mostly as part of his bike-riding route. “I hop on the bike path from my home and come here and sometimes bring a lunch,” he said. “I like that from the top of the hill you can see the Chicago skyline on a clear day. It’s really peaceful here.”

A Munster resident named Jeff also enjoys the peaceful atmosphere and said he’s visited almost every day for 20 years to run. “I usually come after work to relax and wind down,” he said.

As one of the co-founders of Women United five years ago, Ricke said that with her new title, “I want to spread the word about what we’re doing in northwest Indiana. I want to recruit new members who understand our focus is helping women and children in need of basic assistance and women going through recovery from difficult addictions.”

Women United works with several area agencies. These include St. Jude House and The Caring Place, two domestic violence and sexual abuse shelters in the area; Haven House, a halfway house for women in Hammond; Alice’s House, a halfway house in Valparaiso; and Sojourner Truth House, a facility for displaced women and children in Gary. In addition, Women United will be involved in United Way’s Day of Caring in August.

“Every woman has something to share,” Ricke said. “It’s a good forum for women to get

together and possibly share what’s important to them.”

In some cases, Women United members as a group or on their own may raise funds for a particular charity. In other cases, the group may present life skills classes to impacted women at these facilities.

“Our goal is making an impact through service,” Ricke said. “We focus on building a stronger community that fights for the health, education and financial stability for everyone.”

Women United is an international organization, but each chapter has its own focus.

The northwest Indiana group, Ricke said, focuses on serving these organizations and serving as a “good liaison” between the partner charity and United Way. Members have held barbecues and garden parties as fundraisers. Others have assisted with yard work at these facilities. At group meetings, members discuss coming events in their communities.

Other projects have included

a cakewalk and ice cream social for The Caring Place and collecting school supplies for Sojourner Truth House. In April, the group held its annual Bunco Bash, which raised more than $10,000 to help these agencies.

In working with women going through various stages of addiction recovery, Ricke said: “We want to show them they’re not forgotten and people really do care. They’re not alone on their road to recovery.”

Members range in age from the 70s to Ricke’s daughter, who is 20. Some still work, some are retired and some are military veterans.

“We’re just growing a network of like-minded women who want to serve in northwest Indiana wherever we’re needed,” Ricke said. “This service does not require much time, but it takes someone to step up.”

His wife got a medical bill for $85.09. I researched the matter and discovered that the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company paid the bill before the bill to our client was sent to her.

The insurance paid the bill on April 22 and the medical firm cashed the payment on April 26. The bill was printed and sent to our client on April 28. If our client had simply paid the bill when she got it, the medical firm would have received the balance due payment twice.

I wrote a letter to the medical firm citing the facts and told them that they got paid and should not expect any more money from our client. When I finished writing and sending the letter, the client’s husband said to me, “Wow! Now, you’ve saved me over $1,200.”

I asked him to remind me about how he arrived at that total. He reminded me of how I had helped him and his wife in the past.

He was right. I had saved him over $1,200.

All the help I gave these clients was free of charge.

I booked two nights at the Ashtree House Hotel in Paisley, Scotland, through Expedia. I paid Expedia for the first night and the hotel directly for the second night.

I had to cancel my reservation. Expedia refunded the first night but the hotel will not respond to my requests for a refund. I’ve

Kollmar leads food pantry, mission team alongside husband %\ &$55,( 67(,1:(* )HDWXUH :ULWHU When Rita Kollmar of St. John and her husband, Bill, were visiting churches in 2016 to find a new home church, they immediately felt welcome at Dyer United Methodist Church.

“It was the absolute friendliest church we’d been to,” she said. “People greeted us and invited us back. It gave us a warm feeling we hadn’t gotten before.”

Soon the couple was asked to help with some of the church’s outreach efforts, and they were happy to get involved. “Both my husband and I are retired and we were willing to help,” said Kollmar.

The couple now co-chairs the church’s food pantry and the mission and outreach team.

They’re also part of the leadership team and Rita has been a member of the praise team. She has particularly enjoyed the ways they’ve been able to help at community events and with needs in the community.

“Our mission team is small, with only seven people on the

team. We have a very kind church so we’re able to do a lot and we work hard at it,” she said. “We do events, like the market days and ‘Night Out Against Crime’ and trunk or treat. We’ve helped with Haiti hurricane relief and Ukraine refugees. We had one girl who is a preschool teacher, so she was in charge of loading and unloading and was appalled at how many kids didn’t have car seats. We came to our congregation and got money to purchase car seats.”

Other projects have included hosting an Easter egg hunt, donating to a Hammond rescue organization that provides meals for homeless and providing funds for “emergency buckets” at Lake Central High School with important tools that may be needed in classrooms in an emergency.

For the past four years, the couple has co-chaired the food pantry, which supplies food items to those in need. Kollmar said the demand for grocery items has recently increased significantly with the current state of the economy.

My wife doesn’t mow our lawn. I don’t think she will ever ,1 $ mow the 1876+(// lawn. Lawn %\ ',&. mowing :2/)6,( season is here and it just kinda drives me crazy trying to figure out why she won’t mow the lawn.

I want to ask her about this, but I am afraid she’ll assume I want her to mow the lawn. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. If she started mowing the lawn, that would jeopardize our relationship by altering the delicate balance between her independence and her femininity.

If she really wanted to mow the lawn, I wouldn’t stop her.

Don’t misunderstand. I am not accusing my wife of being lazy. She takes on a great deal of responsibility. She is in charge of all the family finances, is on several boards, does all the shopping and prepares dinner for me almost every night.

She also monitors both of our medical appointments.

I’m just really curious to know the reason she won’t mow the lawn.

When I married Mary Ellen, it didn’t matter that she had no interest in mowing. After all, she was intelligent, beautiful, sensitive and caring. It was all a man could want. I just assumed that if shove came to push she’d mow the lawn.

The first year we were mar-

ried, we lived in an apartment and she really had no opportunity to hone this skill. Then we moved to a condo and the lawn was cut for us. When we moved to our first house, the lawn was pretty big and that’s when our son was born, so expecting her to mow and bottle feed at the same time would have been asking too much.

To be honest, I probably wouldn’t enjoy seeing my wife out there huffing and puffing and sweating. Of course, I wouldn’t have to watch. And when she finished, she could just freshen up before dinner.

There are some days, especially in the summer, when I’d like to just sit on a lounge chair and sip lemonade, but instead I have to mow the lawn. That’s where a wife who’s willing to mow comes in really handy. Not that I’d want her to.

It’s really chauvinistic for a man to make his wife mow the lawn. On the other hand, it’s also chauvinistic for a man to assume that a woman can’t or won’t mow the lawn, so I guess I should at least ask her. Maybe she really wants to mow but is afraid I won’t let her.

And maybe she thinks she’s not strong enough. But those new mowers kind of guide themselves. They require very little strength. I’m sure that if she just knew the state-of-theart technology available, she’d jump at the chance to mow the lawn.

Now, my friend, Jeff—his wife mows the lawn. He was over the other day and he asked me why Mary Ellen never mows the lawn. I was as honest with him as I could be …

“I don’t know, Jeff. I never really thought about it.”

“We would rarely see new families, but we are getting more now,” she said. “The food pantry serves not just people in the congregation, but anyone in need in the community. From January through May of this year, we’ve provided for 236 families, with an average of four people per family, feeding approximately 944 people.”

In addition to weekly food distributions — the first and third Monday mornings and two Wednesday evenings per month, with the first following the first Monday — the food pantry also distributes turkeys at Thanksgiving and hams at Christmas and Easter. They’re thankful for local butchers who assist by offering meat products at a discounted price.

The couple’s love story sounds like a movie. After dating for two years in high school, they broke up “because we thought we were too young,” said Kollmar. They reconnected 45 years later after Bill sent her a random email. He was divorced. She was widowed.

They’ve now been married 16 years and have a blended family of seven children, 15 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.

Kollmar is retired from Chase Bank and enjoys sewing, knitting and gardening.

Senior runners stay in motion for overall wellness %\ 67(9( (89,12 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Tom Hutmacher and Elaine Hendricks are two examples of the positives long-distance running can bestow upon older adults.

Hutmacher, 74, has been running since 1974. “It helps me get stronger and lose weight,” the Portage resident said.

Hendricks, 65, has been running for 15 years. The Valparaiso resident always watched Olympians and other athletes but never thought she could be athletic. Then, one day, two unrelated people mentioned running to her, and that got her started.

“The biggest thing physically,” Hendricks said, “is that I feel more relaxed and stronger.”

The two recently competed in the Hobart YMCA Brickyard Run’s 5-mile race and both took home awards. Hutmacher finished first in the male 70-74 division with a 52:04 time, while Hendricks swept the female masters division for those aged 40-plus, clocking a 38:04.

Hutmacher said he usually finishes in the mid-40s for time,

but he has had some health issues. Hendricks said her winning time was not a personal record, “but it’s a really good time. I’m very pleased.”

The two are no strangers to the Brickyard Run, which because of its longer distance attracts some of the area’s top runners.

“I remember the original race when it finished at the old high school stadium, and there’s a lot of shade,” Hutmacher said.

Hendricks, who wears red, white and blue for the holiday event, added, “I like the distance, which is a challenge. The big thing is, this was my first year winning a brick trophy for taking masters.”

Both Hutmacher and Hendricks practice with the Sunset Hill Farm County Park runners and are members of the Calumet Striders, a running club.

“We run as a group, and I’ve made a lot of friends,” Hutmacher said. “When Elaine runs, she beats all of them.”

Both runners cited camaraderie in the running community.

They may be competitors, Hendricks said, but they’re really competing against themselves and setting personal goals.

Personally, Hendricks noted, “I run by feel. I’m exploding with feeling. This is my down time, and each of us is feeling something different.”

While running is good for seniors, there are caveats to lacing up those expensive athletic shoes. The natural aging process takes a toll on bodies, which can make running more challenging.

Also, older runners are at greater risk for such conditions as runner’s knee, Achilles

Meanwhile, Hutmacher and Hendricks keep running. Hutmacher is retired from NIPSCO, while Hendricks is self-em-

ployed as a CPR trainer.

For seniors thinking about running, Hutmacher noted, “It takes a lot of practice.”

Hendricks, who competes in 25-30 races annually, added simply, “Just do it.”

60’s Flashback —

Art weirdo or business savant?

As a dominant figure on the 1960s New York avant-garde art scene, Andy Warhol became a tireless self-pro%\ 5$1'$/ moter who & +,// straddled a line between bizarre media stardom and the strait-laced business world.

He was born Andrew Warhola Jr., in Pittsburgh in 1928, the youngest son of Slovakian immigrants. At age 8, Warhola contracted the nervous system disease Sydenham chorea, also known as St. Vitus’ Dance. He spent months in bed recovering, during which time his artist mother taught him how to draw. When she gave him a camera, the sickly lad also developed a passionate interest in photography.

After high school, Warhola attended the Carnegie Institute for Technology, where he studied pictorial design. Four years later, with degree in hand, he moved to Manhattan to work for Glamour magazine. There he became a successful commercial artist who now called himself Andy Warhol.

Always happy to embrace the controversial, he became a pioneer of “pop art” with his now iconic paintings of massproduced consumer goods such as cans of Campbell’s soup, Coca-Cola bottles and boxes of Brillo soap pads. His development of a photographic silkscreen printing process allowed him to repeat images and create multiple copies of a subject.

He was fascinated with celebrityhood. Thanks to his printmaking skills, he produced an endless variation of stylized images — often done in vivid, garish colors — of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley (his particular favorites), as well as such other superstars as Elizabeth Taylor and Jackie Kennedy.

He always remained an art gallery favorite and was especially beloved by those who sought the unconventional. One typical Warhol exhibit featured collected scenes of car wrecks, electric chairs and race riots, all done in lurid candy hues.

His reputation and his bank account grew large. In 1964, he opened a Manhattan warehouse loft that was covered in tin foil and featured silver painted walls. The Factory, as it was called, became the premier cultural hot spot for creative counterculturists, as well as a

meeting place for the trendy rich and famous.

Weekends often found Warhol and his hangers-on at such “in” local nightspots as Studio 54 and Max’s Kansas City, where those lucky enough to be allowed entrance often mingled with artists, musicians, poets and the occasional politician.

Throughout the 1960s, Warhol experimented with various forms of media, including publishing, television, music production, fashion and theater.

One favorite endeavor was the filming of underground movies. He released more than 60 works, some of which ran for 25 hours and appeared meaningless to traditional moviegoers; “Sleep,” for example, just showed a man sleeping for several hours.

His world changed in 1968

$1'< :$5+2/ when he was shot in the stomach by radical feminist writer Valerie Solanas, who was irate because Warhol had rejected a story she had written. Warhol survived the attack, which damaged several organs, but the re-

mainder of his days were spent wrapped in a surgical corset.

When he died at age 58 in 1987 following gall bladder surgery, he left his estate to what is now the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.

Ten people drown on an average day. Alcohol combined with water recreation is a factor in about one-third of the adult drownings.

That’s why it’s important to understand the dangers alcohol consumption can pose, especially near the water.

When people drink alcohol, their judgment and inhibitions are impaired. That is a dangerous situation, especially near water.

Medical experts suggest teaching children early about the dangers of water and alcohol by setting an example by never drinking alcohol before or while swimming or boating, and never drinking while supervising children near the water.

Probing the Past:

Aaron Burr, the forgotten man %\ 720 02552: 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV If asked who the third man to hold the vice presidency of the United States was, few would know it was Aaron Burr.

He is recalled for one historical event — killing U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton in a duel.

Hamilton has a prominent place in history as founder of what today is the Federal Reserve and, as such, gets his picture on the $10 bill. He remains historically well-known, especially since a recent Broadway musical loosely depicts his character.

Conversely, Burr’s bio is found in very few history books

and primarily deals with his 1807 duel.

Burr was an officer during the Revolutionary War under another controversial character, Gen. Benedict Arnold.

Burr so distinguished himself in the battle at Quebec, Canada, that he earned a place on Gen. George Washington’s command staff. But after only

two weeks, Burr asked for a transfer back to the battlefield.

During an ensuing battle when the British landed on Manhattan, Burr saved an entire brigade from capture, including a young Alexander Hamilton. Evidently miffed because Burr had resigned from his staff, Washington did not commend Burr for his heroic actions on Manhattan.

The snub by Washington led to an eventual estrangement between the two men. Nonetheless, Burr distinguished himself with a number of daring and heroic exploits during the Revolutionary War. Washington buried the hatchet and promoted Burr to lieutenant colonel in 1777, giving him command of a regiment.

During the harsh winter at Valley Forge, Pa., Burr led a small unit guarding an isolated pass that drove back mutinous troops who tried to escape the miserable Valley Forge winter.

Burr had to leave the Army in 1779 because of bad health, but remained active when assigned by Washington to perform occasional intelligence gathering missions. During his days as a spy, Burr rallied a group of Yale students in New Haven, Conn., to aid a small group of Yankee soldiers in a skirmish with the British. This action repelled the enemy’s advance, forcing the British to retreat.

In 1792, Burr was admitted to the bar of New York. As an attorney, he entered politics and was twice elected to the New York state legislature, appointed state attorney general and a U.S. Senator.

In those days, the office of president was elected by the Senate. While in the Senate, Burr ran for president against Thomas Jefferson but lost by one vote, relegating him to the office of vice president, where second-place finishers automatically landed.

Burr blamed Hamilton for his defeat. The two men were pillars in New York social, political and business circles and had become bitter enemies.

During the selection for president, Hamilton rallied several senators against Burr. A few were enemies of Hamilton but they hated Burr even more.

Thomas Jefferson, who had his own rivals, was looked upon as the lesser of two evils.

Burr was highly successful in business. He established the Bank of Manhattan, which continues today as JPMorgan Chase. Near the same time, Hamilton founded the competing Bank of New York, deepening their political and business rivalry even more.

Ironically, it’s their duel that caused Burr to be banished to historical obscurity. What caused the duel is a matter of conjecture. One of the reasons could be traced to Hamilton’s vicious rumors he spread in various newspaper columns.

During their years as business competitors, Burr was widowed and lived with his daughter and her husband.

Hamilton reportedly suggested to a newspaper columnist Burr was committing incest with his own daughter. Enraged, Vice President Burr challenged Treasury Secretary Hamilton to a duel in Weehawken, N.J. It was there Hamilton was mortally wounded and died a day later. His death destroyed Burr’s political and business career and put him into social disgrace.

Years later, Burr traveled west to embark upon what was an alleged attempt to form a new country. He was charged with treason by the federal government but was later acquitted. Still, his reputation as a less-than-honorable man persists despite his many deeds during the Revolutionary War. Burr spent the remainder of his life in relative obscurity practicing law in New York. He died in 1836. His deadly duel is about the only point of history students of today learn about Burr.

Some 30 years ago Aaron Burr’s life was portrayed loosely by author Gore Vidal in his historical novel, “Burr.”

Diuretics and some diet pills can also be potential problems.

These drugs make you shed water faster than normal, either by increased urination or sweating. On hot days, this makes the body more prone to dehydration.

Experts recommend people taking these medications be extra cautious during the summer by avoiding strenuous exercise in the heat of the day, drinking plenty of water and watching for the danger signs of heat-related injuries.

Michael Edward Gross was born in Chicago on June 21, 1947, to Virginia Ruth Cahill, a telephone operator, and William Oscar Gross, a tool designer.

He and his younger sister, Mary, were both raised in the Catholic church.

Early in his life, Michael attended St. Francis Xavier and St. Genevieve schools and then Kelvyn Park High School, where he graduated in 1965. Perhaps there are readers who recall attending these schools with Michael.

It’s of further interest that Michael continued his education at the University of

I have not explored the life and history of Michael’s sister, but records reveal that Mary is a former Saturday Night Live cast member and is currently an actress.

I presume that most of us seniors best recall Michael in his role as Steven Keaton, the father in the TV show “Family Ties,” back in the 1980s when he co-starred with Meredith Baxter and Michael J. Fox. Concerning his personal life, Michael has been married to Elza Bergeron, a casting director, since June 2, 1984. Elza was born on Sept.

2, 1941. Amazingly, Elza was casting director for “Family Ties,” where she met Gross and ended up marrying him.

For the “Trekkie” fans, she was casting director for “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.”

Most impressive to this writer is the fact that “Gross is a passionate railfan with an extensive collection of railroad antiques,” as is this writer. Michael Gross is also an amateur railroad historian, photographer, modeler and part owner in a working railroad, the Santa Fe Southern Railway, a former branch line of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, which operates between Lamy and Santa Fe, N.M. By the way, Michael’s wife Elza is the other half of the ownership of this railway.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ‘nice’ cream

No, it’s not misspelled; ‘nice’ cream is the colloquial term for vegetarian or vegan ice cream, meaning non-dairy.

It doesn’t taste exactly like creamy ice cream, but more like a creamy sorbet and a lot healthier for you than creamy ice cream.

The very basic recipe for two servings is 2 frozen bananas, 1 cup frozen fruit and up to ¼ cup non-dairy milk, such as coconut milk. The flavorful

varieties are endless.

Start by peeling and cutting up 2-3 ripe bananas into about 6 pieces each; wrap in plastic wrap and freeze at least 3 hours. Then chop and freeze whatever other fruit you may want to add. Upon removing the bananas from the freezer, let them set out for 5 minutes before putting them in either the food processor or highpower blender. Pulse until bananas are blended with some small pieces left chunky. Some people like to add a dash of salt and/or ¼ teaspoon of vanilla at this point. You may need to add up to ¼ cup of any non-dairy (or dairy) milk if it begins to ice up or is too thick.

To this basic recipe, add something from below, or have fun creating flavors of your own.

Chocolate Nice Cream — 3 tablespoons cocoa powder.

Mocha Nice Cream — 3

tablespoons cocoa powder plus 1 teaspoon instant coffee.

Mint Chocolate Chip — 1/8 teaspoon peppermint extract.

Stir in chocolate chips after blending is complete.

Tropical — ½ cup frozen mango plus ½ cup frozen pineapple. Add pineapple juice instead of non-dairy milk if needed.

Options — a scoop of nondairy protein, 1-2 tablespoons of peanut or other nut butter, maple syrup, coconut milk, frozen strawberries/blueberries/raspberries.

Once you complete the blending process you may serve it or put in the freezer 30-60 minutes to achieve a more scoopable consistency.

Nice cream can be stored in a freezer container for a couple months. It is best to let it sit out about 10 minutes before serving.

If you live in a sprawling community, you’re more likely to weigh more, have higher blood pressure and walk less than residents of more congested counties, according to health researchers.

They have found a strong association between your health and urban environment, which is of serious concern to older residents.

After accounting for such personal variables as age and education, they found residents of the most compact counties weighed less by over five pounds and walked almost 1½ hour more a month than people living in sprawling counties.

Their levels of sprawl were based on factors such as the density of residential neigh-

borhoods, connections between roads and the physical separation of homes, shops and workplaces.

Poor accessibility is the common denominator of urban sprawl. Nothing is within easy walking distance of anything else.

Those who say they have safe, convenient places to walk or to get other forms of exercise are most likely to be physically active. Access to indoor and outdoor exercise

Getting out of debt costs money %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV A good way to get out of debt is to pay your bills.

That’s my advice. And that’s probably why debtors aren’t breaking down my door seeking counsel on how to improve their economic situations.

You should know, however, I’m as qualified as most fellows or firms who hang up a shingle proclaiming to be a debt counselor, money manager, financial advisor or investment guru.

There are no criteria or qualifications required, even though you should seek out someone with a title like that to help you pay your bills.

There’s plenty of help out there. They charge you a couple of hundred bucks an hour to help you write checks, sort out

your debtors, establish priorities and balance your checkbook.

We’re not talking about investment assistance and portfolio management. We’re dealing with ways to get out and stay out of debt.

What you really need is some sort of disciplined and organized approach to whittling away at your financial burden.

It may be you’ve never learned sound money management manners. Perhaps you’ve lost your spouse, through death or divorce, who handled all the family finances. Or maybe you have no idea how you wound up in such a pecuniary position.

You need help. But let’s review a few matters before you begin shopping for financial assistance. You have to determine just how much trouble

you’re in.

First of all, how long could you survive without any income — if you missed your next paycheck, Social Security check or company pension check? Don’t feel stupid if you don’t know the answer. Most people don’t. But it’s a vital fiscal warning sign.

There are others: • Your credit card bills exceed 20% of your net income.

• You borrow money to pay off existing debt. It’s not funny if you have to “rob Peter to pay Paul.”

• You run out of cash between paydays.

• You make only minimum payments on credit card debt.

If you can’t at least double the minimum payment, you’re in a financial bind.

• You carry more than four credit cards. You only need two

because one or the other will be accepted no matter where you go.

• You want and ask for a higher credit limit on your cards.

Now you can look for someone to help you get out debt, not borrow more money to help pay your bills.

Start by asking someone who has already used such a service.

Or check with an attorney or accountant you trust. When you have some names to work with, check them out with the local Better Business Bureau and chamber of commerce. Ask for at least three references and check them out. Ask for the names of at least three current clients and talk with them.

You also need to determine how you and the prospective money manager will get along.

It’s important you do because you’ll be working closely on solving your problem. You must be able to discuss goals and options objectively.

Make certain you know how much you will be charged for their services. And what you will get in return.

Will he or she arrange your income tax documents as part of the service or will that be extra? Do you need him or her to write your checks or can you do that yourself (and save money) after you’ve held your weekly/monthly meeting? Do you have to meet regularly or do you meet only when you, or they, think it’s necessary?

If you think you have financial problems, you probably do.

The time to begin solving them is right now.

It was 50 years ago —

‘You don’t mess around with Jim’

In Jim Croce’s brief career — he died at age 30 in a 1973 Louisiana plane crash — Croce released five Top $ %RRPHU %ODVW 10 singles, 7R 7KH 3DVW the first of %\ 5$1'$/ which was & +,// one of the best story songs of modern times.

“You Don’t Mess Around with Jim” on the ABC label brought music fans into Jim Croce’s fun-loving world, one that was often replete with rather bizarre (but always memorable) characters.

Born in Philadelphia, Croce played the accordion before switching to guitar.

After high school, he attended Villanova University, where he worked as a guitarist in numerous bands. He graduated college in 1965, became a guitar instructor at summer camps and briefly taught at a Philadelphia middle school.

(One undocumented story has Croce being beaten up by a

250-pound girl student in front of the class.)

He met Ingrid Jacobson at a folk music party in 1966. They married and began writing and recording their own compositions, frequently touring and trying in vain to catch a break. Eventually discouraged, the Croces settled onto a Pennsylvania farm with their infant son, Adrian. Croce drove trucks and worked construction while Ingrid finished college. All the while, Croce continued to write songs, never abandoning a lifelong dream of having a music career one day.

He turned to selling advertising time on Philadelphia radio stations. His work occasionally took him into the darker corners of the city, where he would sometimes visit less-than-savory pool halls. Ingrid recalled later, “He would sit there and watch the pool games and see what people were doing. He ended up with a guy named Jim Walker, who was one of the guys who used to play pool there.”

And what a character Big Jim Walker became in “You Don’t Mess Around with Jim”!

In Croce’s mind, he imagined

a cartoonish version of an intimidating New York City pool hustler — big and dumb as a man can come, but he’s stronger than a country hoss.

Walker reigns supreme around town as “the King of 42nd Street” and he cruises his domain in a “drop top” Cadillac.

As the story unfolds, we learn that Big Jim hustles people for money with his well-honed pool skills. But one day, a southern boy nicknamed Slim comes to town, explaining that Walker had recently hustled him and that Slim was there to get his money back. (Good luck, Slim!) Big Jim’s sycophants then explain some basic survival tips to the visitor: “You don’t tug on Superman’s cape “You don’t spit into the wind “You don’t pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger “And you don’t mess around with Jim.” A bloody melee erupts, and to everyone’s surprise Slim manages to dispatch the fearsome bully. Big Jim’s followers then acknowledge the new order, and the last time we hear the catchy chorus, we’re made

aware of one crucial change: “You don’t tug on Superman’s cape “You don’t spit into the wind

“You don’t pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger “And you don’t mess around with Slim.”

There were about $1.6 trillion in first-lien refinance originations in the first half of 2021. This was a 33% increase in refinance activity compared to the first half of 2020.

But there is a downside to this maneuver.

If you refinance your mortgage, you can lower the monthly payments, but you also lower the amount of interest you pay. Since mortgage interest is tax deductible, this affects your annual tax bill.

Refinancing your mortgage or arranging a home equity loan to take advantage of lower interest rates is still one of the most economical ways to improve your economic status.

If the interest rate is low enough, it makes sense to make payments for the life of the mortgage rather than pay it off to become debt free.

You also can arrange a line of credit based on the equity in your home. You don’t have to use it but it can mean instant cash should you need it for medical bills or

any emergency that may arise.

You also can use the money from a home equity loan or the extra cash when you refinance the mortgage to improve your home and increase its value, doubling up on the economic advances you made through the loan/refinancing.

You shouldn’t expect a 100% financial return on improvements you make to your home.

There are, however, some renovations and additions that make economic sense. A swimming pool is not one of them.

Revamping your kitchen, for example, is acknowledged by most real estate experts as the best remodeling investment you can make. Next comes updating, or adding, a bathroom.

Adding a deck, family room, or a second story also can reclaim much of the initial expense.

These expenditures also can affect your taxes.

Early in 1920 the owner of the dealership and the Canton Bulldogs team invited owners of other area and East Coast teams to come to Canton to talk about organizing a professional football league. There weren’t enough chairs for everyone, so some sat on the running boards of the cars in the showroom. What they came up with was the American Professional Football Conference consisting mainly of Ohio teams.

A month later it was changed from Conference to Association and teams in Buffalo; Detroit; Rochester, N.Y.; and Hammond were added. Legendary Native American Jim Thorpe, who played for the Canton Bulldogs, was named its first president. A bronze statue of him is displayed in the First Century rotunda.

Only two charter members, the Chicago Cardinals (now the Arizona Cardinals) and the Decatur Staleys (now the Chicago Bears) are still in existence.

At the Hall, visitors will learn that football was first professionalized in 1892. They’ll pass through the Pro Football Time Tunnel on their way to the circular structure that focuses on the NFL’s first century, decade by decade. Here they learn that pro football was primarily a regional sport with informal circuits centered in a single state or region with only limited play outside state lines. There’s plenty of equipment and uniforms on display that by today’s standards look to be anything but protective.

Names of teams participating in the early years and now long gone include the Providence (Rhode Island) Steamrollers, Muncie (Indiana) Flyers, Rock Island (Illinois) Independents, Akron (Ohio) Professionals, Brooklyn (New York) Lions, Orange (New Jersey) Tornadoes, St. Louis (Missouri) Gunners, Duluth (Minnesota) Eskimos and the Racine (Wisconsin) Badgers.

There’s a whole room full of busts of famous players, coaches, owners and front office personnel who’ve received gold jackets at the annual induction ceremonies.

The most interesting things, however, are the bits of trivia no one’s ever heard of. Like the fact that Buffalo Bills guard Billy Shaw, a Hall enshrinee, never played in the NFL. His entire career was in the American Football League. How about this!

The tallest pro football player was Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Richard Sligh. He was 7 feet tall. Shortest was Jack Shapiro, a running back for the 1929 Staten Island Stapletons, who was just 5 feet, 1/2 inch tall.

Hands-on exhibits allow visitors to compare their hand size with a pro quarterbacks, slip on shoulder pads, compare 1920s helmets with today’s and stand under the hood like an official to make a video replay judgement.

Outstanding plays from past Super Bowls are shown in the theater.

The history of California and, as follows, of the western United States is rooted in a promontory overlooking the bay Spanish conquistadors first sailed into what has become the nation’s southwesternmost metropolitan complex of more than 3 million people.

Whether you drop down into San Diego on I-5 from the Los Angeles megalopolis or slide in along I-8 from the great southwest, the two freeways meet at the Presidio.

Parked around a solid earlyCalifornia tower is what is now a 40-acre Presidio Park that anchors the 21-mission chain forming the backbone of the Golden State.

The park is the home of the museum that honors Franciscan Friar Junipero Serra, who planted a cross on the hill that might have been intended to be the site of the first U.S. mission but gave way to rebellious Kumeyaay Indians who resented the Spanish iron hand.

The first permanent mission, San Diego de Alcala, was built about 5 miles up the San Diego River in 1769 to soften relations

between the intruders and the natives.

The growth of Alta California grew out of the Presidio; however, the Franciscans accompanied the Spanish soldiers and built the mission chain over the next half century until Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821.

The Mexican government secularized the missions a decade later and rich rancheros came north to claim the spoils. San Diego’s Old Town at the base of the hill crowned by the Presidio became a trade center as Mexico encouraged foreign trade. Today, it attracts both locals and tourists to its shops, restaurants and 19th

century shop workers, such as blacksmiths and woodworkers.

Presidio Hill became a military fort and garrison in the mid-1840s after a combined force of Commodore Robert Stockton and Gen. Stephen Kearney won control of Alta.

The Mormon Battalion Monument honors the Mormon men and women who volunteered to enlist in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War, effectively opening stage routes west and securing those Mexican territories for the states. Brigham Young was looking for help with his westward migration plans and, enlisting his followers in the

army, paid for wagons, horses and other necessities for his grand exodus.

Accompanying the 550-man battalion were 33 women, many serving as laundresses, and 51 children. They earned the church a total of $30,000 in donated salaries, the only religiously based military unit ever established in U.S. history.

Marked trails all around the Mormon monument take you past ruins of the original structures, a bronze statue of the Friar Serra, and the Indian — a statue of a Kumeyaay brave with a freshly killed cougar.
