And while we are still in the grip of winter, with no idea what that famous groundhog in Pennsylvania will predict, there are some definite signs of spring in the Michiana Area.

For those who are considering some home remodeling projects or need a new roof or windows, there are two home shows this month! The Midwest Home and Yard Show in Shipshewana and the Builders Association of Elkhart County’s annual Home & Outdoor Expo.

Organizers for both of these shows are super excited as more vendors are participating this year. That means more experts on hand to answer questions for homeowners coming through. So be sure to check out the previews of both shows and make plans to check out them out. Who knows, you may get some great ideas for your home.

If Pantone’s Color of the Year ­— Peach Fuzz, which was featured last month — wasn’t your cup of tea, check out Upward,

Sherwin-Williams Color of the Year for 2024. This is a cool blue grey which Sherwin-Williams describes as “coastal chic.” The color is dramatic and could be described as moody. Looking online at how the color plays in different rooms provides a lot of great ideas. And if you did like Peach Fuzz or peach tones in general, I think Upward would be a nice accent to the lighter tones as well.

Personality Plus small ways to add style to your home

While a professionally staged house looks great and invites one to imagine themselves in the space, true decorating comes from the heart. It can be inspired by nature, hobbies, interests, or a favorite memory and has the ability to transform the feel of an entire room. The inspiration for this motif can come from a sweater, your favorite scarf, a piece of artwork or any item that you love. Time to think spring and home projects with The BAEC Home & Outdoor Expo

If it’s February, it’s time to think of spring, and home projects, and outdoor projects too. So it’s a good way to spend a weekend by going to area home shows.

The Builders Association of Elkhart County (BAEC) Home and Outdoor Expo is just such a thing, and entry is free. It will take place Friday, Feb. 23 through Sunday, Feb. 25. There are different hours each day, so make note of which works best for you: Friday: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday: noon to 4 p.m.

It takes that much time. “Our Parade of Homes is huge, but with this one, there’s a lot for me to do.” It’s a tribute to a well-run organization and presentation that you can’t see all the details that went into it, only the astounding and finished production. Groves said they have a valued group of

volunteers that assist with everything. “We couldn’t do it without all the volunteers! They have a committee: The BAEC Home and Outdoor Expo Committee.”

As you would expect, this show is handicap accessible. Groves said everything was specifically built to that need. “And we have food and drinks available, SweazyQ is our provider this year.” SweazyQ is known for using locally sourced produce, freshly smoked meats, and the freshest of everything, so plan to delight your taste buds!

Groves smiled when asked about her favorite part of the show. “All the people that come out. Honestly, it’s the people, and seeing them walk through everything, talking with them, talking with the exhibitors–that makes my heart sing.” n photos: shutterstock.com

Having a radio or other outside source, even a charged phone, to stay up to date on emergency reports or road conditions is also important.

For those who are sheltering at home, keeping the house warm is a top priority.

You can place blankets over doors and windows to help retain heat in the space.

“If people are using generators to run lights or to run furnaces, if they have a generator, make sure the generator is not inside. It should be outside in a well-ventilated area firmly away from doors and windows,” Likens said. This is also due to the carbon monoxide emitted by the generator.

North Webster Fire Chief Jeremy Likens has some advice for winter weather power outages. Trying to keep warm is the most vital problem, so his first advice is always to know where the closest warming center is. form of electricity that is available in the home at the time is preferred. Conditions outside may be unsafe and similar food items may be scarce in nearby stores, which may also be suffering power outages.

When the power does come back, throw away any food that has been exposed to a temperature of 40 degrees or higher for more than two hours or that has changed odor, color or texture.

Freezers and refrigerator doors should remain closed, and a gas stove should not be used to heat the house. In fact, ready. gov recommends disconnecting appliances and electronics entirely to avoid damage during possible electrical surges.

“The loss of power is very difficult,” Likens added. “It’s one of those things where if you don’t have a generator and you don’t have any power it’s kind of hard.”

If vehicles need to be running, don’t let them run in the garage, again, due to carbon monoxide. Disconnect the garage door from the track, and open the garage door before turning the vehicle on.

During cold weather, there’s an increased risk of pipes freezing in the house. Likens recommends ensuring the generator is on the furnace if you have one, and opening cabinet doors to help pipes get exposed to whatever heat is available.

Keep water trickling through faucets if possible.

If medications need to be climate-controlled, know what temperatures can harm them and for how long they can be at higher or lower temperatures. n

When it feels like winter will never end, what’s a good way to chase away those blues? Why, planning your upcoming gardens and landscaping, plants, flowers and so on, and hardscaping, anything non-living, such as a brick patio, a stone wall, or a wooden arbor.

You can page through seed catalogs, watch home improvement shows, or you can visit some good, reputable businesses for their expert advice, like Stone Ridge Landscaping, where Terry Taylor handles sales and design. When asked what to do first, he said, “Planning. By far, planning.

JR Miller, owner of Superior Hardscapes, agreed. “The earlier, the better. At least 2-3 months in advance.” Tracy chimed in, “As long as the ground is workable, you can plant. Not the really delicate things–for those you wait until after Mother’s Day.” What is most requested? Well, each business gets different requests,” Miller explained. “We get the most requests for patios and outdoor living spaces.

Outdoor kitchens are definitely a thing, but on the whole... well, wait, we are starting to do putting greens!”

“Hardscapes look to be the big thing.” It’s been on the upward trend since COVID,” added Tracey.

“People are eating outdoors more. We’ve seen pavilions and pergolas are getting a lot more common now. And you’d be surprised what we can do in very small spaces: even in small yards, we can do a circle with a firepit in the center. The tricky part is that it seems to oscillate, year by year. One year it might be mostly softscape, beds, mulch, and so on. The next year you might have a lot of hardscape.

So it varies. I wouldn’t say there’s one more favored than the other.”

What’s the newest thing or latest trend? The men pretty much agreed landscape instal-

lations are a big thing, with minimalist designs due to expense. It comes down to the cost of not just installation, but maintenance. n

If it’s February, it must be time for the Midwest Home and Yard Show!

Have you been there before? Well, if you haven’t, this is the year you must: SuEllen Yoder, the digital marketing strategist who keeps all the details running smoothly, said, “We actually have almost twice as many vendors as last year!”

The show, held in the Michiana Event Center, is well equipped for handicap access. Yoder explained there is a drop off zone at the door as well as nearby parking.

“It’s level all the way inside, and the floor is concrete and the building is climate controlled.

There are benches in various places for people to sit and rest, because there’s a lot of walking involved in attending this show.”

She thought for a minute and said, “there’s a dining area, and we offer burgers, chicken, fries, soft pretzels, ice cream, soft drinks and coffee.” Sounds like lunch to me!

What age group seems to attend most? Yoder said, “older homeowners, you know, people in their 50s and 60s. They don’t

necessarily do everything by themselves anymore, so they can talk to experts.” And make no mistake, those who display at this show are experts in their particular field, with work you can trust and results you will love.

As always, there are multiple giveaways, and they’re good ones. One such package is, “power tools. Alpha Building Center has your choice of entries for a package by DeWalt, Milwaukee, or Makita: a lawnmower and all your main outdoor lawn and garden tools, everything battery powered,” explained Yoder. “Superior Hardscapes will be giving 50 feet of curbing to the lucky winner. Yoder has been involved in this show, “from the beginning. My husband and I started working on marketing in 2010 and the first show was a year later. It was originally held in just an empty factory building. And there were

woodworkers in an empty Jayco building, who said, ‘hey, why don’t you just lease it year round to be sure it’s always available?’

We knew if we were going to do that, we should book some other shows to cover the cost and we did.”

There seems to be no limit to the possibilities, so come check them out. You’ll never be sorry you did.

The Midwest Home and Yard Show will be held Feb. 9-10, at The Michiana Event Center, 455 E. Farver St., Shipshewana. Show hours will be 1-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10.

Admission is $5 at the door.

Generators help keep the lights on and the fridge cold when the power goes out

The multiple extension cord system is also time-consuming, and potentially hazardous. It’s generally safe for a couple of appliances or lights, but not an entire home or a large portion of a home, and can create an increased risk of fire. If you’re going for a whole house set-up, the transfer switch option is preferable, but Cagnina doesn’t recommend going at it alone.

Make a list of the items you’d like to power, and determine the wattage of each. Several websites can give general ideas, but it’s best to consult the owner’s manual for exact specifications for each appliance individually as wattages among various appliances vary greatly. Generators aren’t cheap, and the effort will be well worth the time invested. For example, you can expect that a refrigerator or freezer will need 600 to 800, while an electric furnace may take upwards of 25,000.

For any item that has a motor, you’ll need to calculate the total wattage, which is the running wattage plus the starting wattage — that’s the amount of energy needed to start the motor up. Not all items require extra power to turn on.

Add all the power for each item you want to power together. Once you have those, a list of items you want to power and the wattages they need, add the numbers together to figure out what size generator would be right for you. The more appliances you want to use, the bigger generator you will need.

The generator you choose should always have a wattage capacity that can handle not more than 90% of its capacity with the starting wattage.

There are three basic types of generators. Portable generators can generally only provide enough power for things like tailgating or camping but are easier to take and more affordable. Inverter generators are less noisy and more fuel-efficient, but generally ideal for RVs and battery-operated devices.

While portable and inverter generators are an option for power outages, a whole-house generator may be ideal if you’re looking to power your entire house. This type of generator is hardwired into the house. The cost is anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000.

“Under no circumstances should you plug a generator into a wall socket, known as backfeeding. If you go the transfer switch route, get a professional installation,” Cagnina says.

Transfer switches are connected to the generator using a special generator cord. A midsized generator or larger should use a generator cord, which goes directly into the generator’s outlet, and the other side splits into several household outlets to connect additional cords safely indoors.

After the generator is started, using the owner’s manual for reference, flip the main breakers of the transfer switch and then turn on each circuit to be powered one at a time.

Never use or install any generator inside the home, garage, or any other structure. Keep them away at least 10 feet from doors and windows as well because generators produce carbon monoxide which can seep into your home. n

One Tray Chicken with Rice Pi laf

For the chicken, preheat the oven to 450 degrees.

Put the chicken, garlic, potatoes, lemon, onion, oil, herb and spice mix in a large bowl and toss thoroughly to coat everything.

Spread the mixture on a sheet tray and cook until the chicken is cooked through to 160 degrees, about 30 minutes.

For the rice pilaf, heat a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the rice and oil and toast the rice for 1 minute.

Add the onion and cook, stirring 1 minute more. Add the stock or water and a pinch of salt and bring to a simmer.

Cover and simmer until the liquid is absorbed, about 18 minutes. Shut the heat off and let the pilaf sit for a couple of minutes. Fluff with a fork and serve with the chicken and vegetables. n

FLOORING AROUND A look at the past and present trends

Ah, 2004…when Tuscan kitchens were in, texture was everywhere, and laminate was the affordable alternative to hard wood floors. As times change, so do the trends in flooring and while some materials remain timeless classics, others have been given a makeover in terms of style, color and appeal. Want to find out what’s hot and what’s not for 2024? Let’s start by taking a walk down memory lane.

Two decades ago, wall-to-wall carpeting and linoleum were making way for a resurgence in hardwood flooring. According to a study conducted by the National Wood Flooring Association and Catalina Research, wood flooring accounted for an estimated 10.5 percent of total flooring sales in the US and were projected to reach 12.8 percent by 2008.* There was also an uptick in the number of homeowners in search of products that looked like the real thing without breaking the bank.

“When I started in 2005, everything was laminate, but by 2012 manufacturers started to realize that it didn’t hold up to moisture and it wasn’t built to last. That’s when luxury vinyl plank hit the market and it’s just taken over,” said Mike Emeigh with Infinity Flooring in New Paris. “In fact, 80% of what we sell here is LVP and the technology just keeps getting better.”

Popular for its affordability, durability and versatility, LVP mimics the look of a hardwood floor with highly detailed and realistic patterns that mimic natural materials with precision.

Christine Doncaster of Doncaster Flooring and Design says not only is LVP replacing laminate, but also vinyl tile and linoleum in bathrooms and kitchens.

“It also comes in a wide variety of colors and styles so homeowners can customize their choices to suit their preferences,” she said.

CLASSIC CHOICES GET AN UPGRADE Of course, traditional hardwood flooring remains popular, but there has been a shift from the narrow plank of yesteryear to a wider plank and varied finishes. Lighter tones and grayish hues have gained popularity while dark brown has faded from fashion.

Tile likewise has its audience thanks in part to a surge in tile options “Large format tiles, hexagonal and geometric patterns, and the use of bold colors have become more common and while there are homeowners who still like their carpet, there has been a shift toward area rugs and carpet tiles,” Doncaster said.

Emeigh agrees that there is less demand for wall-to-wall carpeting than there was 20 years ago and he cites the health and maintenance issues as the reason for its lack of favorability.

“People are concerned about allergies and there is a lot that goes into cleaning a carpet,” he said. “Families are busier, and they have less time to spend cleaning their house. They are looking for products that are easy to maintain.”

THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT Experts say flooring will continue to improve and evolve over the next 20 years, with more homeowners seeking sustainable materials or flooring made from recycled resources. There will also be improvements in Smart Flooring integration with sensors that monitor temperature, pressure or even health metrics, which will be relevant in smart homes and healthcare settings.

“Health-focused materials in flooring designed with well-being in mind such as those with antimicrobial properties or allergy resistant features will gain attention,” said Doncaster. “There will also be continued efforts to simplify the installation process and make maintenance easier for certain flooring types.” n

The shortest month of the year, February, boasts an additional day every four years. It’s necessary because the Earth’s orbit around the sun is actually closer to 365.25 days, so if we didn’t include it, seasons would be thrown off although it would take about 750 years for seasons to swap completely.

How It All Started....

In fact, the Roman calendar only had 355 days in a year, and it did cause shifting of the seasons over time. When the Julian calendar was later refined into the Gregorian calendar in 1582, the Leap Day addition every four years became a standard. The math’s not perfect either way, but adding an extra three days every 10,000 years seems a lot less confusing.

January and February were the last months to be added to the calendar, and they were originally at the end of the year, not the beginning.

Before the Roman calendar was invented in the 6th century, winter was considered a monthless time. The monthless winter was 61 days of cold when government, military, agriculture and life overall wasn’t very active.

Stemming from the Latin word “februa,” meaning “to cleanse,” the month came from the month-long festival of purification and atonement in Roman society known as Februalia.
