Some girls had a cute nickname like ‘Princess.’

Others had cool ones like ‘Bruiser’ or ‘Disco Queen.’

But, mine?

It was Snuzy. Otherwise spelled snoozy.

So I happened to APPRECIATE SOUND SLUMBER EVERY NIGHT OF MY LIFE!!

What’s wrong with that, I type with a dramatic eyerollllll?

I’d rather forgotten about the nickname until recently pondering the coming of spring. Being a shameless word nerd (truth), I looked up the definition of ‘spring,’ just for the heck of it.

Spring: “to move or jump suddenly or rapidly upward or forward” -online dictionary Hello, Snuzy memory. Why? Because my most forward rapid movement of recent months has been an emphatic slam to the snooze.

The truth in some nicknames stings a little.

But since spring (the noun) has transformed into its verb, my snoozy self has a lot more energy. Yes, m’arms can’t hug the welcome of spring with adequate love and appreciation. I’m overflowing. And I bet you are, too.

Spring’s energizing sunlight streams through the windows— delivering refreshing strength to re-emerge. So nature may visibly grow. And bloom.

This LAKElife season, let’s re-emerge as well— with gratitude, humility, and a dash of humor. When these behaviors rule within, what emits is just pure goodness.

As such, I’ve added new features this season to celebrate our re-emergence. Check out the new ‘Peeps’ section— where we focus on those who CREATE, those who SERVE, and those who spring forward toward a CAUSE— and all for the betterment of our lake communities.

And there’s more. We’ve included a ‘Gratitude List’ this season. Want to ensure someone special is recognized? All it takes is a name. Check the list each issue; you might just see your name. As we commence lake season 2022 in this spring-lovin’ month of April, let’s host lakeside gatherings again. Well, well, well. Here we are in our third season. I’ve missed you so many bunches.

And here YOU are again, reading the small print, back in the routine. Warm up your java, folks, ‘cause it’s time for some fun.

So, here we go again, just like Whitesnake. It’s the start of another great season, and in this energizing month of April, elusive spring has, indeed, sprung. The sun is shining, grass is greening, and just as Corinne Bailey Rae predicted, the birds are back and they said we don’t need to worry. So good to know.

Temps are slowly warming, nature is beautifying by the day, and we’re ready to jump in for another season of appreciating life’s simplicities, watching sunsets, soaking in views, and just loving this lifestyle. Simplicities are so profound, aren’t they? Indeed, they are.

It’s the month when we celebrate readying for the season ahead. We watch the crocuses peer their pretty petals, and we plan Easter celebrations, wear bunny ears (admit it), plant a tree or two for Earth Day, dust the fishing poles, sweep the garage, clean closets, and scrub the dirty winter shoe mess from the floor. It’s time for renewal, and perhaps some disinfectant.

LAKElife is so excited to be back, and we’re eagerly pulling together a full season of fun for our amazing readers. What a time to celebrate.

In April, let’s linger in the moments. With all senses, let’s notice nature coming alive. And for those keeping track, back by popular demand, competitions between Ron and Sue (that’s me) continue into our third year. In

April, Ron and I shall compete in freaky-fast potato sack races down Milford’s Main Street. Yes, you’re as surprised as he will be. (Ron is such a good sport.)

Voices of nature echo across the lakefront. In a chorus of whispers, they signal spring’s return. Robins serenade from oak branches that whistle in the breeze, while soft waves brush the shore. When spring bows to summer and families gather outdoors, the concert builds to a crescendo of splashing and diving, of motorboats and fireworks, of music and laughter.

A prelude to this year’s lake action, “22 Ways to Arrange Lake Days” opens the 2022 season with a playlist of home enhancement, entertainment, and recreational ideas sure to amplify the fun.

Ensure a fresh start by pressure washing decks and siding, patios and lawn furniture.

Apply paint or stain where necessary. Explore new colors and shades.

Install a ceiling fan above the lakeside porch to provide a pleasant retreat when heat and humidity escalate.

Plan and schedule noisy or messy building projects early in the season to maximize lake time when sunshine and warmth predominate. Welcome the whirr of a fishing reel rather than endure the rattle of power tools.

Diagram and plant a nautical-themed garden.

Surround a plot of flowers, vegetables, or herbs with a rope fence, then use oars, dock lights, and anchors to decorate the space.

Redesign your lakeside patio. Build a stone fireplace or a firepit, and consider adding a water feature, sturdy planters, and ambient lighting.

Hang a hammock, or two, near the water’s edge and sip piña coladas while swaying to velvety lake breezes. Accessorize with comfortable throw pillows. Hang a mini hammock for the kiddies or the pooch.

Build a pirate ship treehouse or play area overlooking the lake. Provide spy glasses and eye patches, and organize a treasure hunt.

Purchase inflatable slides, water wheels, and trampolines to delight kids and adults. Toss in a floating mat and a floating cooler for ultrarelaxing days on the water. Just add sunscreen.

For more than 30 years, the Lake City Skiers have entertained Kosciusko County with their impressive stunts.

The Division I water ski show team is comprised of nearly 140 talented athletes, from skiers as young as six years old, up to 60+. How deep does the talent run? Some skiers have competed at the national level and joined the pro skiing ranks across the world!

f you’re looking for some warm-weather entertainment this summer, the Lake City Skiers are a must-see.

“We are the only competitive show ski team in Indiana,” said Chuck McLaughlin, vicepresident of the Lake City Skiers. “All of our shows are themed with music and costumes.

We are the only team in Indiana to perform large acts, including 4-tier pyramids,” he said. “We are also the only team to use

twin- and triple-rig towboats with up to 900-horsepower.”

The team began performing shows and competing in 1990 at Hidden Lake and surrounding lakes with just 20 members.

Over the years, the Hidden Lake show site has blossomed into a top tourist attraction in Warsaw, with improved seating to better accommodate spectators, a large parking area, and a full-service concessions stand.

“We start practices in the winter inside at a local gym— climbing pyramids, working on doubles skills, and payon (ballet line dance on dock before going into the water) and payoff (short dance on the stage after returning to shore) routines,” McLaughlin said. “As soon as the weather permits, we move outside for dryland practice, and then onto the water.”

The theme for 2022 is (Disney’s) The Lion King. In addition to costumes, props, and storyline, the audience will see acts such as barefooting, freestyle jumping, doubles, an all-girl ballet line, and four-tier pyramids,” McLaughlin said. “There will be as many as 30 skiers on the water at one time and the use of 4 tow boats to keep something in front of the crowd at all times. There will also be specialty acts like sky ski, swivel ski, shoe ski, and wakeboard.”

This year, the team will be hosting the City of Lakes tournament at Hidden Lake and competing in The Central Region Tournament in Rock Island, Illinois. They will also be competing in the Division I Nationals in Loves Park, Illinois.

In September, they will have their Allstar Show at Hidden Lake, where they will bring some of the top skiers from around the nation to join them in a special performance.

BALD EAGLES

Although they appear austere and individualistic, bald eagles are surprisingly social, loyal raptors.

Once endangered, bald eagles are now thriving throughout much of the United States, including Indiana. You may see them roosting by some of our lakes.

Eagles mate for life— sometimes they live as long as 38 years.

When they are ready to roost, a pair of eagles will choose a tall tree near water. Both future parents gather materials to build their five-to-six-foot nest. The female typically does most of the placement, creating a moss-and-feather-lined space for her eggs (usually one to three eggs at a time).

rowned with white-feathered heads contrasted by yellow beaks and legs, bald eagles are a pleasure to observe. While flying in a flat line, eagles cruise along at 40 mph. While diving, they can reach speeds up to 100 mph!

Their hunting agility is unmatched, swiping prey from a river or field with deadly accuracy.

Bald eagles prefer to eat fish but will snatch up whatever is available. Sometimes they eat other waterfowl and small mammals, including coots and rabbits. Most of the time, though, they hunt for perch, bluegill, or whatever is available in the water near their nests. If no food is found, bald eagles can fast for days at a time.

Juvenile bald eagles are ready to leave the nest at about 10 weeks, when their fluffy down is replaced with strong flight feathers.

Their maiden flights are acts of courage; they launch themselves from the nest into the wind. Landing is the hardest part. Most birds must make several attempts before learning how to land gracefully.

Even the most majestic raptors need to come home. Although they explore areas far from where they were born, young eagles usually return to mate and roost within 100 miles of their homes.

They repeat the cycle of their parents, depending on each other for food, warmth, raising chicks, and defending their territory.

Next time you see a bald eagle, know that it loves its home as much as you love yours!

Northeast Indiana artist Matt Granger creates beautifully handcrafted wooden signs and gadgets for lake-loving locals.

According to his proud wife, Megan, “Matt Granger Designs started in the summer of 2020 after Matt used his CNC router to create a lake map using wood and epoxy as a gift for his grandmother,” she said. “This unique gift was a hit, and he began receiving requests for others. Lake Christmas ornaments soon followed and were even more popular!”

Matt continues to take requests for different lakes, and offers many personalization options.

How did you begin with your current artwork?

I was initially introduced to programming of CNC equipment during my senior year of college, and a few years later purchased my CNC router. After spending a little time with the machine, I made one of my first gifts (for my grandma!) who lives on Rushford Lake. This was the first map I made, and it’s really what started my hobby.

How have you expanded your products and creations over time?

Initially I focused on lake maps— but my wife encouraged me to make ornaments for the Christmas season. They became very popular among those not only in our lakes area, but also in many other states, as people requested ornaments for their own lakes. Since then, I have slowly expanded to making lake clocks, award plaques, a table, and other miscellaneous gifts.

What is your main material or favorite medium?

I love to work with wood and stick mainly to walnut, cherry, and maple. These work well on the router and really accent nicely with the blue epoxy I use for the lakes.

What is the best part about creating your art?

The best part is seeing the passion everyone has for their lake. There have been so many requests from people who are passionate about seeing their lake on one of the pieces of work. Every time I receive a compliment there is usually a story about how the map or ornament brings back good memories to that person, and it is a joy to hear.

Are there any other details about yourself you’d like to share with our readers?

Yes! My hobby is something the whole family helps with, especially around the holidays. I have three kids who love to help out. This year we created a special ‘Gold Ribbon’ ornament, in honor of Hadley (our oldest), who donated the money to some of the organizations that have helped us along our journey.

Hadley wrote a letter The Granger family: Matt, Megan, Aubrey, to each person who Lincoln, and Hadley. purchased one of these ornaments, and included it with the gift. She also ties the ribbon on the ornament. Lincoln, our middle child, loves to help package the ornaments and sweep all the sawdust in the shop. Then Aubrey, the youngest, loves to help polish the ornaments and hand me a new one when needed. Aubrey’s favorite room in the house is the basement because she knows that is where she gets to help Dad work.

Would you please expand on your role(s) within the community?

Yes, I’m the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office PIO, and am the Tippecanoe Township Trustee, as well as a firefighter/ EMT with the Tippecanoe Township Fire Territory. I have been with the sheriff’s office since September of 2004. I’m nearing the completion of my first term as Trustee, and I joined the fire department in 1999 (at age 16!). I also served during two terms on the Tippecanoe Township Board, am a lifelong North Webster resident, and graduate of both Wawasee High School and Indiana University.

And it’s no surprise. After all, he’s devoted to this community, to his wife and children, to protecting our citizens— and he’s proof that good lake living is, indeed, good for the soul. And he gets it honestly… read on to learn of his deeply-rooted heritage, straight from the history books of Kosciusko County.

I was told you and your children go on your own time + dime to clean area cemeteries.

Well, cemetery maintenance is on the list of township trustee responsibilities and it’s something I’ve really turned to the last two years. By doing the work myself, I’m able to save money within our budget. And personally, it’s therapeutic, a good reason to enjoy beautiful weather, and it’s visually rewarding.

It’s truly a tranquil experience. Working with my children on this (sons: Caden, 15, and Reagan, 11; daughters: Kennedy, 9, and Piper, 6) is a prime way to teach them civic responsibility and community care. And the cemetery maintenance is also really about preserving our history. Our cemeteries are fairly old, and a lot of those folks don’t have family around or nearby anymore.

I've been told repeatedly that you're a wonderful steward to the community.

How do you respond to that?

I definitely do not seek the accolades; however, I appreciate, and am very humbled by that comment.

Your family is not new to this community.

Please tell us more.

My family moved to Tippecanoe Township in the 1830s and had a major part in building our community. Not only is it important for me to honor their legacy, I also want to do my part to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

Why do you think you were drawn to police work and work as a fireman?

I’ll have to blame genetics for part of my career choice. One of my grandfathers was our town marshal and a firefighter, and the other grandfather was a military policeman. I’m thankful that I was able to chase my childhood dreams. Now that I’m on the backside of my law enforcement career, I can reflect on how many paths I’ve crossed. I’ve been fortunate to meet a tremendous amount of wonderful people and hopefully make an impact on those who have struggled. Hey, we all have to bail water out of the boat from time to time. And, as far as the fire department goes, I’ve served with a tremendous group of people throughout the years. The department took me in as a kid and I’m indebted to those men and women who trained and then trusted in, me.

How would you describe the career you've had so far?

I started at our work release center right after I graduated college in 2004, the county jail in 2005, and patrol in 2007. There is one certainty in law enforcement, you will never see it all. The sheriff’s office is a busy agency and we’re exposed to a lot of incidents in a short amount of time. To be totally honest, it is a career that takes a heavy toll on your soul; which is why I really strive to enjoy life outside of work.

Speaking of life outside the office, do you enjoy time on the lakes? Any hobbies you’d care to share?

We do! I have to acknowledge that I was the professional tuber in a family of skiers. We enjoy our boat rides on Webster Lake, regularly visit Lake Michigan, and we also have a swimming pool that my kids just about live in during the summer. I love to exercise; my gym time and bike rides are a must. All of my children are active in various sports throughout the year, I enjoy reading— and, I might be slightly obsessed with Halloween. But above all, regarding life outside the office, I have to mention how thankful I am for my wife, LeAnne. She supports my endeavors; our household truly requires a team effort.

Not to sound cliché, but it does take a village. There’s a sense of pride when you come from a small town, and that’s why I love it here. accessible and do not provide much of an inclusive play environment. We launched this fundraising effort, A Playground for Every Eagle, to ensure that children like Addy have a fun and inclusive experience every day at recess.

Playtime is so important to children as they develop. Talk about that, please.

Yes, there are so many benefits of inclusive play— and many take for granted the learning and relationship building that happens out on the playgrounds at schools. By connecting children through inclusive play, children of all abilities develop social skills and an increased sense of empathy, which promotes unity and sets a solid foundation to build a more accepting community and brighter future for all of our families. Meaningful, inclusive play provides physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development benefits, which is extremely important to continually develop in school age children.

My daughter, Addy, attends Eisenhower Elementary in Warsaw, where she is in first grade. She is in a wheelchair and unable to walk due to her rare, neurodevelopmental disease. Currently, the school playgrounds are not wheelchair

We've worked diligently with experts to revamp and design custom playgrounds that incorporate truly inclusive equipment, sensory play, shade, and a multipurpose surfacing that is both safe and allows easy navigation for children who may be disabled. I feel a playground should be a place where children of all abilities can play.

We’ve raised $5,000 via our GoFundMe page and the school hosted a fundraiser in the fall to support our efforts, from which we raised an additional $1,700! Since, we’ve hit a few bumps in our fundraising process that we’re working on finalizing so we may continue to actively pursue fundraising and reach our goals.

After our project was launched in October, 2021, WSBT (local CBS affiliate) reached out and did a great segment on our project— and from this, there’ve been several organizations who’ve expressed interest in supporting our project via fundraising donations and grants. We’re grateful!

A couple local farms sell farm-raised meat and poultry. One is Nature’s Farm and Garden, where they raise angus beef, chickens, and produce. During the summer they also have a booth at the Syracuse Artisan and Farmer’s Market.

Farther away, you can’t go wrong at Martin’s Custom Butchery near

Wakarusa. They own Bales, but for bulk orders, it’s usually a better buy. We order a few days ahead and make the short drive through Amish Country to pick up the order. Try a custom burger mix of ground short rib, ground brisket, and ground chuck. It will be the best burger you’ve ever had! They also have rabbit, if that’s on your agenda.

Another popular spot is John’s Butcher Shop in Nappanee. There’s an exceptional meat counter, and the bratwurst choices will satisfy any grill master.

For year-round access to farm-raised meat and poultry, the Goshen Farmer’s Market has at least two vendors offering frozen goods. And, Creekside Farm’s turkey is always on our Thanksgiving table.

(serves 4)

Ingredients: 1-2 lbs. asparagus, ends discarded 2 tbsp. olive oil 2 cups grape tomatoes, halved 2 cups shredded mozzarella salt and pepper to taste Balsamic glaze, for drizzling Fresh basil, chopped

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil and spray with non-stick cooking spray.

2. Place asparagus on half of the prepared baking sheet and the tomatoes on the other half. Drizzle the asparagus with 1 tbsp. of olive oil, salt, and pepper. Repeat process with tomatoes. Toss separately to coat.

3. Place the veggies in the oven and cook for 5 minutes. Remove baking sheet and place mozzarella evenly across asparagus. Place back in the oven and continue to cook another 5 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and is slightly golden.

4. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and place the asparagus on a serving plate. Top the asparagus with tomatoes and fresh basil. Drizzle the balsamic glaze on top and serve!

Winter has begun to ease its icy grip on LAKElife Country already, and no doubt all that open water will soon look much better while cruising atop its surface than as now, gazing at it from shore.

Spring fever is real, and we’re ready to be in our boats!

And while boats have been around for a bit (10,000 years or so), those who engineer them still manage to come up with something new for water fun.

Over the past eight to 10 years, pontoons have overtaken other boat sales, and they still remain ever-popular. Pontoons tend to be stable, accessible to more skill levels of driver, and can host a decent number of people for an outing with family and friends.

the Switch

This year, Sea-Doo has introduced the Switch, which adds a third pontoon to the vessel. In addition, according to Jason Cripe, president of Main Channel Marina in Syracuse, the Switch is made of a composite material instead of the traditional aluminum. The boat’s motor is more or less the same as a Sea-Doo personal watercraft, which still gets the job done for an easy cruise, or for skiing and wakeboarding. The Switch also allows for a number of layout configurations of the deck as well.

Other companies are also in the ‘tri-toon’ game right now, as they allow for a bigger boat and offer slightly better handling, according to Jeff Kiess, the sales manager at Pro Wake Watersports in North Webster.

Surf’s up, sans ocean

‘Surf boats’ have caught on as well.

The Malibu-Axis line is among the more popular models for those who want to get out and surf, Cripe said.

These boats tend to be heavier— bigger weight = bigger waves.

Indeed, some of these surf boats have on-board water tanks to add weight, and if that’s not enough, some boaters buy bags of lead to make the boat heavier, Kiess said.

Once a surfer gets up to speed, he releases the tow rope and simply rides the wave of the boat’s wake behind the boat. Surf boats are strictly inboard motors, with propellers tucked up under the hull, since surfers have to follow fairly closely behind the boat.

Supra and Moomba boats, manufactured by Skier’s Choice, are what Kiess calls, “the smartest boats on the water,” thanks to the software loaded in the boats’ systems.

Cripe and Kiess both mentioned a sound system (which can come pre-installed or can be added later) is easily one of the most popular additions. A lot of folks like to have their music with them on the water— and they want to hear it over the spray.

New advances and upgrades in today’s boats aren’t always easy to see.

“The whole goal is when you jump in this boat, and you drive it a few times, it learns how you drive and accommodates your driving style,” Kiess said.

So these boats ‘learn’ your driving style, and if you tend to be in cruise mode more, or you’re moving fast, it automatically adjusts accordingly. They don’t drive themselves yet, but it likely won’t be another 10,000 years before that happens.

Moomba boats tend to be the standard style of boat in this class, Kiess said, while the Supras tend to be more luxury oriented with power seats, heated seats, and other fine touches.

If someone’s perfectly happy with their boat, there are still some modifications that can be made.

But, everything in moderation, Kiess said, which brings up a trend that Pro Wake hopes to grow: proper boating etiquette.

“One thing that we as a company are going to focus on this year is the do’s and don'ts on the water,” he said. Proper boating etiquette regarding speed, wakes, and yes, perhaps turning tunes down a notch or two to be respectful in each other's space— are all important to ensure everyone can enjoy sharing the water.

This time of year, there aren’t as many lake enthusiasts with whom to share the water, as the weather hasn’t warmed just yet. But if you can’t wait for higher temps, there’s good news. Yes, Kiess said there’s a fix for that: “There’s heat in a lot of these boats!” So get ready, get set, and go make some waves.

the ABCs on fly fishing

So, you want to learn a little about fly fishing, do you? (Hint: Here’s where you respond, “Why yes, yes I do,” so writing this article will not have been in vain).

Good. Having settled that, let’s start where every fly fisherman in history started, knowing nothing about the phenomenon that comes in a variety of progressive forms: hobby, craft, sport, therapy, passion, and obsession.

What follows is a mere primer, and much more in-depth and expert information is available in the resources cited, but let’s take a run at the ABCs.

What is fly fishing?

Since different fish have appetites for different insects, a fly fisherman’s inventory of hand-crafted flies can reach in the hundreds or thousands.

Knowledge of the preferred aquatic menu preferences is helpful, but so is luck, karma, providence, and earnest supplication to invoke the hand of the Almighty. And the human doesn’t always win.

Grasping the definition is far more straightforward than mastering the activity itself, but basically fly fishing is an outdoorsy endeavor to catch fish by casting and drawing along the surface of a lake, pond, river, or stream an artificial thread and bead critter made to look like a fly or other insect.

Fly fishing:

• Releases positive endorphins, especially after your first successful catch

• Provides a full-body workout, promoting dexterity, balance, and strength

• Reduces inflammation • Enhances a feeling of tranquility and serenity

• Encourages family time and social interaction

What do you need to begin fly fishing?

The basic inventory is embraced in the name itself: a fishing rod or pole, reel, line, hooks, and flies. Also considered essential are tools such as forceps and clippers to remove hooks from the fish and a net to land them. For gear, consider waders, a good vest with a copious amount of pockets, a sun hat and lotion, and polarized glasses used to peer below the water’s surface.

Should I take lessons?

That’s probably a good idea if you’ve never whipped a fly out onto the drink. But make sure your instructor is competent at explaining the basics, maintains his or her patience in answering your many elementary questions, and has a personality and humor that meshes with yours. What will I get out of the experience?

Well, it’s doubtful your investment will be recouped with other than sustenance for the occasional dinner entree, but fly fishing isn’t really about the financial return on investment.

It’s about the intangibles. Valuable intangibles. Ask any avid fly fisherman to explain why he or she does it and the answer will come in a wistful gaze and knowing smile, rather than in words that wouldn’t be adequate, anyway.

C’mon, Get Happy: 5 Ways to Boost Mental Health This Spring

Spring is the perfect occasion to reflect on our mental health and reset if necessary. Sometimes that means trying new activities or revisiting ones we’ve enjoyed in the past. Here are 5 ways to foster positive mental health this season and beyond.

. JUST BREATHE: “Because it just happens without us having to think about it, we don’t often think of breathing in terms of a stress-reduction tool,” said Dr. Siquilla Liebetrau, clinical director and licensed psychologist with the Bowen Center.

She notes there are many apps and tutorials online that may be helpful and guide a breathwork practice. If all else fails she recommends a go-to exercise: “Breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4, and repeat the cycle at least 4 times. If you still feel overstressed, repeat 4 more times.”

LAUGH IT OUT: Laughter is another secret weapon to emotional wellbeing. It has the ability to relax the whole body, boost the immune system, relieve physical tension and stress, and can leave your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after, according to Dr. Liebetrau.

While its positive effects are still being studied, we do know that laughter helps us let go emotionally.

“Looking at the funny side can put problems into perspective and enable you to move on from confrontations without holding onto bitterness or resentment,” said Dr. Liebetrau. “Laughter may even help you to live longer. A study in Norway found that people with a strong sense of humor outlived those who don't laugh as much.”

GET BACK TO THE BASICS: Dr. Liebetrau said it best: “The reality is, by caring for your body, you are also caring for your mind.” To that end, exercise improves emotional well-being by reducing anxiety, depression, and stress while at the same time boosting energy, mood, selfesteem, positivity, cognitive functioning, sleep, and resilience, which is your capacity to recover quickly from adversity.

Sleep may be another undervalued yet important piece of the self-care puzzle. Per Dr. Liebetrau, sleep deprivation can lead to irritability, anger, and decreased ability to cope with stressors. It can also result in depression and anxiety in the long term.

On the other hand, good sleep can improve thinking, learning, memory and attention, and it can lower stress.

If you’re not into watersports, bicycling is another way to enjoy the area while getting some exercise, he said. Kosciusko County has designated bikeways along county roads, and various trails in Warsaw and Syracuse continue to grow in popularity. Get out there!

hat should a customer consider when thinking about building a custom wine cellar in their home?

Tips when considering your new wine cellar, from the experts at Martin Bros. Contracting: • Construction of a wine cellar includes: framing, electrical, refrigeration, insulation, wall and floor finishes, cabinetry construction, and installation.

• Differentiate if you’d like a showcase wine room, or just a room for wine storage.

It was 1978 when her family first called the Barbee Lakes chain ‘home.’

A

nd when she and her husband decided to purchase their own lake property, “we knew we wanted to be on the Barbee chain,” she said. And so they did.

What ensued was one progression after another toward achieving their forever lake home, as they wanted it, right where they wanted to be.

Meet Steve and Lana Dowell.

The Dowells purchased a ‘fixer-upper cottage,’ where for a decade of winters the couple made improvements, including an expansion. But after 10 years and a growing family, it was time for more space— tailored space, designed to embrace their hobbies and goals, and large enough for the family.

So the ‘fixer-upper’ was torn down, and in its place, Timber Rock Construction built a forever lake home— on the very same property— on the same Barbee Chain that stitched an imprint on Lana’s heart nearly 45 years ago.

And today, morning coffee and sunset views over these waters are routine for the happily now-retired couple.

A former employee in the guidance department at Wawasee High School, Lana spent much of her life immersed within her greatest guidance role as mom to daughters Jessica and Elizabeth, and now as grandma to Levi and Lily.

This lakeside, covered porch is ideal for watching a storm roll by, to relax with morning coffee, or to simply enjoy the lake view in the shade.

Steve began working with DePuy Synthes in 1989. “I said I would give it three years, and it ended up being almost 30,” Steve smiled. This former Worldwide Director of Regulatory Compliance retired in 2018, and although he both appreciated and

enjoyed his career, this husband, dad, and grandpa loves retirement far more.

Yes, the Dowells designed a lake home to fit their lifestyle. One that accommodates their interests, feeds their appreciation for nature and water fun, and one that flawlessly hosts precious time with family and friends. “We knew we wanted to have a home that was open and welcoming for our family and friends to spend time with us and enjoy the lake during the summer, and other gatherings throughout the year,” Lana said.

And that is precisely what Timber Rock Construction built.

The Home

The Dowells chose a classic Craftsmanstyle home “because we wanted (a style) that seemed to fit naturally on the lake— nice, but not too formal,” Lana said.

And nice, it is. In fact, this 2,500-squarefoot home with three bedrooms, an enormous sewing room, lake views from nearly every room, covered lake-side porch, and frequently utilized bonfire/grilling patio is a perfect blend of beauty, comfort, style, and ease.

All lighting throughout the home offers a satin nickel finish. “I’m really happy with the result,” Lana said.

The bright laundry room is an efficient use of space, and offers stunning views of a gorgeous bay.

“The kitchen is spacious and easy to work in… when we are hosting a holiday meal or get-together, the large island serves as a great buffet setup, and the double ovens are invaluable.” -Lana

The Interior

An open floor plan from entry to kitchen to a cozy front living room invites a relaxed indoor gathering. A gathering with plenty of room to move about— whether cooking, gazing at the lake, or soaking in the fireplace’s warmth with a show on the big screen.

The beautiful kitchen was custom-created to provide ideal space and use for Lana and Steve, but versatile enough for a whole crowd. “It’s functional with a great work zone and plenty of counter space for preparation work,” Lana said. “The storage is plentiful, and when we are cooking simply, for just the two of us, everything is close at-hand.”

As much as the Dowells love their kitchen, the front living room with its fireplace and wall of window overlooking the lake, is their favorite area of the home— but water views are seen throughout the home. “It’s amazing to wake up in our bedroom to the view of the lake,” said Lana.

The master bath has a luxurious spa feel, and modern look. Views overlook a beautiful bay.

And one additional lake view that can’t be beat, is from Lana’s sewing room. As every artist craves her own space, Lana now has her own. A quilter since 1994 and member of the Lakeland Quilt Club (based in North Webster), Lana and her group make charitable contributions of quilts to various organizations, including the Cancer Care Center in Warsaw and Quilts of Valor® (quilts awarded to service members or veterans touched by war). In this personalized space, “I (also) make quilts for family… and my own

personal collection,” Lana said. “Quiltmaking can take up a fair amount of room, so having my own creative space was a must from the first talks of building a new home.”

Steve's personal interests, too, are seen throughout the home— from his home office with curved surround screens to several pieces of antique furniture from his family, including a dining room set owned by his great-grandfather, a captain in the Civil War.

The twin beds in the grandkids’ room belonged to Steve’s father and his brother when they were young boys; the beds were purchased in 1936.

“The patio is a comfortable place to gather outside after a day of swimming and boating— and has a great view of 4th of July fireworks,” said Lana.

The Exterior

Nestled on .6 acres, with a virtual peninsular panoramic view of the lake, a channel, and wetlands, the home’s exterior is an oasis of its own.

With a lakeside, covered porch off the master bedroom, to the paver patio where bonfires are commonplace, and Steve’s grilled, smoked creations waft about the air, it’s an ideal space for the couple, and for the entire family and network of friends. “Steve uses (the patio) as a base for his Big Green Egg and grill, which he uses to make delicious smoked and grilled creations all summer long,” Lana said.

From their pier to boats and water toys, the Dowells look forward to years ahead of perfect summer days with their daughters and grandchildren visiting, as well as friends, for lake cruises, swimming, great grilled dinners, bonfires, and then a repeat the next day. “The best part of a lake home is sharing it with everyone,” Lana said.

We might ascertain that piecing together the home’s interior, exterior, and ideal-to-them location of the Barbee chain makes the Dowells’ story as endearing as a cozy, beautifully stitched quilt— one made with love. And sew at home.

AT HOME | The Dirt So, let’s get growing!

Lettuce Let-Us Discuss

• Choose which lettuce varieties you would like to grow. Lettuce falls into four categories: crisp head, butterhead, romaine, and loose-leaf (spinach, for example). Select your favorite! When it’s time to harvest loose-leaf varieties, snip individual leaves with scissors (more leaves will grow back!); most other varieties grow full, individual heads to harvest.

• Select a sunny spot for the best growth. Plants should get at least six hours of daily sun; however, lettuce will still grow if given less than 6 hours.

• The soil should be loose and should drain well.

• Add some composted organic matter about one week before planting seeds.

• Seeds should be planted 1/8-inch to ¼-inch depth.

Lettuce seeds need light to germinate, so don’t sow them too deep.

• Seedlings can (and should) be thinned when they have 3 to 4 true leaves. Thinning produces bigger heads of lettuce.

Lettuce is so simple— and pretty fool-proof to grow. Just imagine, you could be enjoying a delicious fresh salad from your own garden in no time!

One of the most wonderful things about growing lettuce is it can be grown in either a big garden or a small space (such as container, window box, or planter). And because it is a cool-weather crop, lettuce may be started as early as the soil can be worked. For us, this is typically mid-March.
