Warm Up | EDITOR'S LETTER Three middle school-aged boys toppled into the black Impala.

The driver: my husband The trio: our boys The quest: the annual excursion to buy fireworks Despite verbal jarring + high decibel debates over who rode shotgun, the quest was accomplished, each store aisle perused, boxes loaded, arms full, and young boy hearts electric with anticipation.

Yes, this testosterone-teeming trip was better than Christmas morning.

When showtime commenced, the mission’s driver transformed to Legionary, and our boys were his Legions.

Under command of said Legionary, each year proceeded without major incident—and each year our serious leader, too, would transform into a middle school-aged boy.

My daughter and I would smile, watching as this gaggle of boys scurried back and forth lighting, running, hooping at the grand displays, and laughing at the underwhelming fizzle-splats.

It was a joy to see the boys happy—and to witness the hubbs’ pleasure, intentionally creating positive moments for the boys.

Isn’t this just like the Fourth of July season?

It’s the special time of year when traditions forge forward. Families unite.

Barbecues ensue. American flags are raised, we don red, white, and blue, jam the best playlists, and we celebrate this great country’s birthday with brilliant fireworks over the lakes.

It’s time for heartfelt, heart-swooning pride + celebration for this country. And for our families. It’s a time to intentionally appreciate life.

July delivers consistent hot days, brilliant sunshine, warm water temps, and it’s the one full month of no school. Summer is alive and each day counts.

The consistent sound of engines on the water lull our spirits to peace. Baseball fields crowd with players + fans alike, and trails welcome increasing numbers of runners, hikers, and bicyclists. Farmers markets buzz with energy, ice cream shops line with eager customers, sunsets lure appreciative moments + reflection, and families reconvene to reset and rebalance.

What a beautiful month it is.

So raise those American flags. Fire up the grill, ready the bonfire pit, wash the swim towels, and cut the pineapple into star shapes—because family + friends are coming.

A

self-proclaimed ‘Hoosier-Buckeye,’ thus defining his roots, locale of education + the bulk of his professional life, his impactful depths extend far beyond state borders.

Meet Steve Coyle, US Navy Veteran, who managed Defense and Energy Department projects to protect human health + the environment. This role was a “life-changing experience” for Steve—and today, Kosciusko County is fortunate for his guidance and focused efforts toward preserving our own environment, area wetlands, trails, and waters.

His local family roots began in the ‘50s—renting on the East Shore of Syracuse Lake. After his mother’s purchase of a Lake Wawasee cottage in 1973, a family gathering place was born + cultivated—to endear and endure, as it remains his family’s lake retreat today.

Steve now dedicates his time as a wetland specialist, diligently educating on the environment + nature. “Our county has the highest percentage of wetlands in Indiana,” he said. “Natural

areas are beautiful habitats that protect wildlife and lake water quality—wetlands are gems that need to be protected.”

With his background in environmental science/engineering, today Steve focuses on the technical aspects of the Syracuse-Wawasee Trails Committee, he’s on the WACF committee, and he partners with the Lilly Center for Lakes & Streams.

We’re delighted to welcome Steve to our new ‘Along The Trails’ page, where he’ll share expertise on nature’s wonders along our beautiful trails; we’re grateful for his passion for preservation of nature.

We wish Steve + his clan a fabulous Fourth as they watch fireworks from the pier. And above all, we thank Steve for his service to this great country.

Welcome to July’s expansive gibberish of the Masthead!

And welcome to our fourth issue of this SIXTH season of publishing. My stars, the season is shooting by. But not so speeding fast that we can’t enjoy it. That’s the whole idea of this lake life, right?

You bet your apple pie eyes, it is.

Fourth of July celebrations will soon energize the whole country. And in Kosciusko County, pontoons will be loaded to max occupancy. Coolers will be filled with precision. Grills will scent the air with yumms.

Strawberries and blueberries will adorn flag cakes.

Rocket popsicles will drip down little (and big) arms.

Sparklers will be at-the-ready, and each morning of the holiday weekend, porches, patios, and docks will hold happy families in p.j.s and blankets, sharing morning coffee + donuts. Cousins, aunts, uncles, gramps, and that second cousin who always brings the cool fireworks will gather for good times + the best celebrations.

Yes, it’s the season of family reunions, flotilla parades, pinwheels, American flags, and stars and stripes galore.

We’ll don red, white, and blue everything, festive summer dishes are made, old-fashioned ice cream is churned, and by golly, Uncle Sam’s patriotic spirit is, indeed, alive ‘n’ well.

Playlists will include classics by Lee Greenwood, Miss Miley, and the late and great Toby Keith. We sing along, we sway, and we absorb the patriotic goodness.

It’s a good life in this U.S. of A., don’t you think?

beds are equally colorful and bountiful. And if this spring you planted flowers of reds, whites, and blues, then by now your florals are the talk of your Fourth gathering. Good job, moms.

It’s the one full month that’s void of school. So help the kiddos appreciate each day. Explore the outdoors. Learn about the stars. Seek out nature. Hike. Bike. Fish. Swim.

Soak in the sun (safely), then conclude each day with a comforting bonfire that invites togetherness, stories, and happy hearts.

Write out bucket lists for the summer. Then, schedule and make ‘em happen. Let’s focus on health, let’s move more, find new hobbies, and daily let’s notice our blessings. Encourage neighborly gatherings, express gratitude for this country’s freedoms, and thank a serviceman/woman for his/her dedication to the U.S.A. And send an appreciative nod Above to all who’ve gone before us. It’s a beautiful life, don’t you think?

Break out the s’mores and watch the kiddos delight in ‘mellowy sweetness, and their awe in lit sparklers. No matter the age, we all love sparklers, and in our hearts, we believe in the American dream.

Which brings me to my boss and compadre who can hold a lit sparkler until it extinguishes in his fingertips— and who is, himself, a great American story. Yes, you know Ron… our region’s publisher extraordinaire. From the early-morning flag raising to the final burst of fireworks over the water, all that lakeside fun, flavor, and freedom make Independence Day unforgettable.

Want to turn your Fourth into a lakeside legend? Here are four ideas to get you started:

1. Deck Out Your Dock This year, why not go beyond the usual bunting? Think flag-print towels, floating lanterns, and patriotic paddle boards. Add a vintage cooler filled with cold drinks, and you’ve got the makings of a photo-ready party spot that feels as fun as it looks.

3. Lakeside Games That Go the Distance 2. Fireworks + Floats

From cornhole and capture the flag to dockside cannonball contests, keep the energy high with games that bring everyone together. Bonus points if prizes are involved— think patriotic flip flops, cheery glow sticks, or a red-whiteand-blue popsicle treat.

Plan an on-the-water parade with kayaks, canoes, and floaties with everyone dressed in red, white, and blue. As night falls, anchor your pontoon near the middle of the lake for a floating fireworks watch party. Don’t forget sparklers for the kids.

4. A Feast That's as Fun as the Fireworks

It wouldn’t be the Fourth without festive treats. Dive into four colorful, easy-to-make, and ridiculously good recipes that are perfect for lakeside noshing: • Firecracker Shrimp Skewers, complete with sweet heat glaze • Stars & Stripes Berry Trifle, the no-bake dessert that dazzles • Patriot Popcorn Mix, salty, sweet, and totally snackable • Red, White & BBQ Chicken Sliders, a crowd-pleaser with a tangy twist

Recipes:

STARS & STRIPES Berry Trifle No-bake, crowd-pleasing, and oh-so-patriotic Serves: 10–12 Prep Time: 20 minutes Chill Time: 1 hour

Ingredients:

FIRECRACKER Shrimp Skewers

Sweet, spicy, and sizzling off the grill Serves: 4–6 Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 6–8 minutes

Ingredients:

• 1½ lbs. large shrimp, peeled and deveined • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 2 tablespoons honey • 1 tablespoon Sriracha (adjust to taste) • 1 tablespoon lime juice • 2 cloves garlic, minced • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika • ¼ teaspoon salt • Bamboo skewers (soak in water 30 minutes before grilling) • Fresh cilantro and lime wedges for garnish

Instructions:

1. In a bowl, whisk together olive oil, honey, Sriracha, lime juice, garlic, paprika, and salt.

2. Toss shrimp in the marinade. Let sit 15–30 minutes (or chill up to 2 hours).

• 1 angel food cake or pound cake, cubed • 2 cups strawberries, sliced • 1½ cups blueberries • 1 cup raspberries • 2 cups cold heavy cream • ½ cup powdered sugar • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1 (8 oz) block cream cheese, softened • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt or sour cream

Instructions:

1. Beat cream until soft peaks form. Add powdered sugar and vanilla; beat to stiff peaks.

2. In another bowl, beat cream cheese and yogurt until smooth. Fold in half the whipped cream.

3. In a large trifle dish or clear bowl, layer cake cubes, cream mixture, and berries. Repeat.

4. Top with remaining whipped cream and arrange berries in a flag or star pattern, if desired.

5. Chill at least 1 hour before serving.

1. Spread popcorn and pretzels on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

2. Melt white chocolate in microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between.

3. Drizzle over popcorn and toss gently. Quickly sprinkle on candies and sprinkles.

4. Let cool and harden 15 minutes before serving or storing in an airtight container.

Serves: 8–10 Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 25 minutes

1. In a bowl, toss chicken with BBQ sauce and vinegar. Warm gently in a pan or microwave.

2. In another bowl, mix coleslaw with mayo, mustard, salt, and pepper.

3. Toast buns if desired.

4. Layer each slider with BBQ chicken, slaw, and any extras like pickles or jalapeños.

5. Serve warm or chilled—they travel well, too!

RACCOONS Nature’s Mischievous Masterminds

Equal parts adorable and devious, raccoons have become experts at living alongside us—and there’s more to them than dumpster diving and masked faces! The North American Raccoon (Procyon lotor), has become an expert at raiding trash cans and looking cute while doing it.

Their human-like hands help them pluck prey from hiding places, raid nests for eggs, open garbage can lids, turn doorknobs, untie knots, and even open jars! Raccoon population numbers have grown as a result of the human population growing. They eat plants, fruits, and small animals like fish, frogs, and insects along with trash.

N

octurnal and skilled climbers, raccoons make their homes in hollow trees or burrows. Don’t worry if you ever see one take a tumble—they can fall from heights of 30 to 40 feet without injury and can run up to 15 miles per hour. An adult raccoon on average weighs around 22 pounds and grows 30 to 36 inches long, including their distinctive 10inch ringed tail.

Female raccoons typically give birth to a litter of babies, called kits, each spring. A litter can include three to six kits, which are weaned for two months but stay with their mother for up to a year. In the wild, raccoons usually live around five years, though they can reach up to 20 years in captivity. They face threats from predators such as bobcats, coyotes, and mountain lions, but many raccoon deaths are caused by human activity or diseases like rabies.

The Lilly Center for Lakes & Streams at Grace College conducts research, provides resources, engages and educates residents, and collaborates with local organizations to make the lakes and streams of Kosciusko County clean, healthy, safe, and beautiful. To date, the Lilly Center has conducted scientific research on over 30 streams and 45 lakes.

An Independence Day

A Discovery + Mystery Thinking I would write about some of the unique flags we have in our collection, I came across a fascinating discovery: in a box in the museum’s attic, we found a 13-star flag!

We have no records on this flag or how it came to our museum. Because each state in the union is represented by a star, it’s possible this flag could have been used from 17771795. The condition of the flag is quite poor, suggesting it could be centuries old. However, it is machine-stitched and contains metal grommets which could indicate it’s newer than we think.

When most of us think of the early American Flag we think of the Betsy Ross flag, with the stars in a circle, but this one has stars in rows. Our research indicates it is possibly a Francis Hopkinson flag (considered to be the first version of the Stars and Stripes)!

13-star flag: Other flags in our collection include a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Banner. This flag would have hung on a pole and been used at ceremonies and gatherings of Civil War Veterans.

Who was Francis Hopkinson?

Francis Hopkinson signed the Declaration of Independence, served as a federal judge, and designed many symbols, seals and flags of the United States. He billed Congress for his design work; his price was a quarter cask of public wine.

Since we don’t know much about this flag, we’ve reached out to history, military, and textile experts to help us determine its authenticity and age. We’ll keep LAKElife readers in the loop when we learn more!

Nature Along The Trails: RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD

As you travel the boardwalks at Conklin Bay and Mud Lake (main channel), you can see a common inhabitant of marshes and fields: The Red-winged Blackbird.

T

he Red-winged Blackbird is one of the most abundant birds in North America, and we now get a good glimpse of that as they sit atop cattails and grasses.

Jet-black male Red-wings dot the wetlands, each displaying his red shoulders and repeating a brief, loud song to proclaim his territory. His mate (or mates) builds the nest and incubates the eggs.

You get a better hint of their real numbers in the non-breeding season when you can see a vague cloud, like a puff of smoke, moving across the distant horizon. Binoculars resolve this into thousands of dark specks, a winter flock of Red-wings. They may be joined by grackles, cowbirds, or starlings, which are also prone to gather in big flocks. Trying to estimate the number is difficult since it is often in four figures, sometimes five, and occasionally six or even seven (yes, millions)!

The Red-wing is a member of the New World blackbirds, and it is “sexually dimorphic”—meaning the female plumage is totally different from that of the males.

IDENTIFICATION Males: Commonly known to many of us, the male is unmistakable. The only problem is that its red shoulder can be concealed at times, leaving only the narrow, pale yellow margin showing on the wing.

Keep an eye out for the Red-winged Blackbird along the trails!

Females: The female, brown with body streaks and head stripes, can look like something from a different family—a big sparrow, perhaps. But no other similarly colored bird has a bill like hers, with its deep base and sharppointed tip. Young males look like females but blacker, with variable orange or red on the shoulder.

uring summer’s season when homegrown herbs are bountiful + salads are just extra fresh and delicious, this recipe serves the tastiest of herby blends for a slammin’ summer meal and happy bellies ‘round the dinner table.

Ingredients

PISTACHIOS 3 tablespoons grass-fed butter ¼ cup pistachios (shelled) or use walnuts 2 teaspoons minced garlic DRESSING 2 tablespoons champagne vinegar 3 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 2 teaspoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon organic Dijon mustard pink Himalayan salt + ground black pepper

SALAD 2, 6-ounce filet mignon, at room temperature Himalayan salt 1 tablespoon cold grass-fed butter 2 avocados, diced 3 seedless mini-cucumbers, or 1 extra large cucumber, peeled and diced ¼ cup basil leaves ¼ cup dill, chopped 2 tablespoons fresh oregano

1. BROWN THE PISTACHIOS. In an iron skillet, melt the butter, then add nuts. Cook about 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add minced garlic. Cook another 2 minutes, until fragrant. Place nut-garlic mixture in small bowl + set aside.

MAKE DRESSING. In separate small bowl, add all dressing ingredients.

Whisk with fork and set aside.

3. COOK FILETS. Salt + pepper the filets.

Reheat the same iron skillet; heat on high. Add filets. Then add cold butter, swirling around so crust forms on bottom of steaks. Cook for 3 minutes.

Lower heat to medium and flip steaks.

Cook for another 3 or 4 minutes for medium-rare. Remove, setting steaks on cutting board for 10-15 minutes.

MAKE SALAD. While meat is resting, dice avocados and cucumber, and chop herbs. In your serving bowl, add avocados + cucumbers, basil, dill, oregano, thyme + lettuce. Use tongs to toss. Add pistachios (or walnuts).

5. SLICE FILETS. Thinly slice the filets, then place atop the salad. Drizzle the dressing over the top of salad + steak slices.

July is berry picking season!

T

his summer we are very excited about our yields from the blueberry bush in the garden—especially because there will be plenty of berries to use for this sweet treat.

Yep, move over apple pie… July is meant for the classic All-American dessert: Sweet Blueberry Pie.

Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 1 hour Cooling Time: 3 hours Total Time:

4 hours 20 minutes

Ingredients

6 cups fresh blueberries, about 2 lbs.

1 cup granulated sugar ½ cup Tapioca flour 1 teaspoon lemon zest 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 dash ground cinnamon homemade pie crust 1 egg white, beaten granulated sugar, for sprinkling

3. BLUEBERRY PIE FILLING: In a medium bowl, measure berries. Pour sugar over berries and then pour tapioca over sugar. Sprinkle the zest on and drizzle around the lemon juice. Stir gently to begin to coat the berries without crushing them. Let the berrysugar mixture rest for 15 minutes, stirring gently every 5 minutes. The sugar and tapioca will begin to coat the berries and become wet and slightly sticky.

4. After 15 minutes, spoon berries into prepared chilled pie shell. Sprinkle lightly with dash of cinnamon.

5. TOP CRUST: Cover with chilled top crust (make a slit in the top to allow to vent), or strips of crust to make a lattice top. Trim off any excess dough and seal and crimp the edge of pie. With a pastry brush, lightly brush the top crust with beaten egg white and sprinkle with granulated sugar.

1. Preheat oven to 400°F.

6. Bake in preheated 400ºF oven for 30 minutes, then cover gently with a piece of aluminum foil to keep the pie from over browning. Bake an additional 25 minutes, remove foil and bake 5 more minutes for a total of 60 minutes.

2. BOTTOM CRUST: Add rolled out pie dough to a 9-inch pie pan and refrigerate while you make the berry filling.

7. Cool this pie for at least 3 to 4 hours before cutting (for best results I recommend to refrigerate for another hour after it cools, before cutting).

Ingredients

1½ cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon sugar 1 cup butter, cold + cubed 1 cup active sourdough starter or sourdough discard

Instructions

1. Prep and chill the butter. If using a food processor, cube 1 cup butter and chill it in the fridge until ready to use. If using a large bowl, use a cheese grater to grate the butter and place it in a small bowl in the refrigerator until ready for use.

2. Add the dry ingredients (flour, salt, sugar) to the bowl of the food processor or a large bowl, and mix to combine.

3. Pulse with a food processor (or use a pastry blender) to cut in the cold butter until pea-sized pieces are incorporated into the flour mixture. Do not overmix or the butter will begin to melt and the pie dough will be greasy.

4. Add 1 cup sourdough starter and pulse or stir until the pie dough comes together.

5. Turn the pie dough out onto a lightly floured surface and use a bench scraper to fold it over onto itself until all the flour is incorporated. Do not knead, as kneading will cause the butter to melt and the dough to become greasy and sticky.

6. Cut the dough into two equal pieces and shape it into discs. These two discs of pie dough will make the top crust and the bottom crust. Wrap each disc with a piece of plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for at least an hour or up to 3 days before use.

7. Grease and flour a 9-inch pie plate.

8. Prepare a lightly floured work surface and use a floured rolling pin to roll out the pie dough. The pie dough should be 1/8” thick and 2-3 inches wider than the pie plate. So, for a 9-inch pie plate, the dough will be rolled into a 12-inch circle.

9. Drape the dough over the pie plate and gently fit it without stretching, so the sides drape over the edge.

10. Use scissors to trim around the edges so everything is even.

11. Crimp the edges or press with a fork. * If it takes longer than 5 minutes to roll and set the dough in the pie plate, chill the pie plate and dough for 30 minutes before filling it and baking. This will help the pie crust maintain its shape.

12. Add the pie filling. Follow the baking instructions for the time and temperature of the particular pie you are baking.

HOT SAFETY TALK TO KEEP IT COOL

Summer has arrived, and folks are headed to the lake for good times and celebrations.

Fire Chief Shilling From Fire Department volunteer for Leesburg/ Plain Township to Fire Chief of Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory (WWFT) in just 12 years, 34-year-old Fire Chief Joe Shilling was appointed to his current position a year ago, in May of 2024.

To climb such a proverbial fire ladder of professional heights, it requires deep dedication to one’s inner purpose. And for Fire Chief Shilling, people are purpose; he’s very familiar with the Kosciusko County area and its residents.

Fire Chief Shilling makes it a point to get to know the lakes’ residents and is well-acquainted with the territory. He spends a considerable amount of time enjoying the outdoors, is fully devoted to his community, and is inspired by those around him.

“You must be a community-minded individual to be a firefighter… the community are our ‘customers’ … and we are here to serve them.”

Fueled with a servant mindset, Fire Chief Shilling is most inspired by his team at WWFT. “The employees of WWFT are who inspire me most…,” he said. “They do an excellent job and are constantly striving to be better for our community.”

And what a gift for our area. “I’ve learned through experience that most people are having a bad day or going through a difficult time when they encounter the Fire Department,” Fire Chief Shilling said. “What inspires me to keep doing what I do is being there to assist them in whatever they’re dealing with.”

Busy in duties as Fire Chief, but also as husband to Andrea and dad to three young boys, leisure time is enjoyed with baseball and being immersed in the outdoors—camping, hiking, biking, and “I do enjoy spending time on the lakes when I’m available,” he said.

Fire Marshal Williams Safety Precautions This is the time to relax around campfires and enjoy meals fresh off the grill. To ensure everyone’s safety, let’s all heed words from the professionals.

• On campfires “Campfires are a favorite activity for many lakers,” said Fire Marshal Williams. “Recreational fires are allowed as long as they are attended and are in designated areas such as a fire ring or pit, and you have proper tools such as shovels and a garden hose, on hand, in case the fire gets out of control. We have been called numerous times to small campfires that homeowners can’t control.”

• On cleanup After an unseasonably long, cold winter and spring, cleanup may still be underway at your property. But before stacking up debris and refuse in a fire pit to discard your yard rubbish, check out the enforced fire burning laws and safety recommendations in the county.

“It is imperative to keep children away from any grill or cooking appliance while it is being used,” added Fire Marshal Williams. “Children do not realize the dangers of heat and can quickly be burned while enjoying our favorite summertime activity. We recommend keeping all grills at least 10 feet from any structure while being used. As firefighters we have responded too many times to structure fires that involve grills being too close to a house.”

The Wawasee Sailing Foundation is Born

Alan passed away in 2023 and left a very generous donation to the Wawasee Yacht Club (WYC).

As directed in the gift, those funds have been used to create a new 501(c)(3) organization, the Wawasee Sailing Foundation (WSF). The WSF has now officially received IRS approval to operate a nonprofit organization, allowing for tax deductible charitable donations.

In 1951, Hugo Fox retired as the principal bassoonist for the Chicago symphony and had a vision to build musical instruments in the United States. He returned to the family farm in South Whitley, Indiana and created his first bassoon, beginning an incredible business. In 1960, his son, Alan Fox, left his position in the chemical engineering field to work in the family business. Alan led Fox Products for over 50 years, developing world-class double reed musical instruments at the factory in South Whitley. Alan also got involved with sailboat racing on Lake Wawasee, where he participated for over 50 years.

The boards of the two organizations (WYC and WSF) are working together to define the roles of each, in order to progress the sport of sailing in the community.

There are plans to extend the classes into the broader summer calendar, but the addition for 2025 will be a junior sailing racing class, to be held in July and August. The plan also includes expanding racing education and participation for Interscholastic (High School) level sailing teams.

Sailing education will also evolve to include adult sailing lessons in 2026. The foundation will need to invest in some new boats that will carry multiple adults comfortably, and intend on having a very flexible scheduling system—so you’ll be able to enroll your houseguests in some introductory classes!

Between the hum of boat motors, the smell of grilled corn, and the sparkle of fireworks in the sky, it’s the perfect time to gather the whole family—young and old—for some easygoing, memory-making activities.

hether you’re planning something special for the Fourth of July or just looking to beat the heat with purpose, these simple ideas offer tons of festive fun without all the fuss.

Build-Your-Own Obstacle Course

Create a backyard obstacle course using what you already have on hand: pool noodles, buckets, kiddie pools, jump ropes, and even patio cushions. It’s a great way to get moving without needing much prep.

How to set it up: Walk through the course first to make sure it’s safe. Time each participant, or just see who finishes with the biggest smile.

1 Backyard Family Olympics

This one’s a crowd-pleaser, especially if you’ve got cousins, neighbors, or friends in town. Keep it low-key with easy-to-set-up stations such as water balloon tosses, sack races, and a Frisbee accuracy challenge.

For younger kids, include a hula hoop contest or “who can make the silliest face” round.

How to set it up: Assign teams by family, or mix up the generations. Use chalk or cones to mark off game zones. Hand out ribbons or small homemade medals—it’s more about fun than competition.

Pick-a-Plan Adventure Board

Encourage together time with a DIY board full of folded slips of paper, each with a simple activity suggestion. Anyone can add ideas—think “make lemonade from scratch,” “build a sandcastle,” or “watch the sunset from the dock.” Pull a few slips each day and complete the chosen ones together.

How to set it up: Mount the board in a shared space, such as the porch or fridge. Use a jar or envelope if you’re short on time. Let kids decorate the slips for a personal touch.

2 Fishing Derby & Simple Fish Fry

Few things say “lake life” like an early morning fishing trip. Organize a low-stakes family derby and cook up your catch (or supplement with something from the market). Keep it informal with picnic tables, lemonade, and simple sides.

How to set it up: Set a time limit for fishing and make categories such as “most fish caught” or “smallest catch.”

Let the kids help with breading or setting the table.

History-in-the-Yard Family Feud

Design a patriotic-themed trivia game complete with clues that both teach and entertain. Think riddles about George Washington or fun facts about the Liberty Bell. You can even include physical challenges such as “ride a horse like Paul Revere” or “march like the Continental Army,” offering treats or small prizes for the best performance.

How to execute: Print scroll-style clue cards, divide the family into two groups, and have two buzzers at the ready for each fiercesome face-off.

The best July memories often come from the simplest moments.

These ideas are easy to pull off, customizable for all ages, and— most importantly—centered on enjoying each other’s company.

CORE VALUE Developing a Strong Core for Balance and Health

t’s a familiar scene, a demonstration of strength and balance repeated all summer long on lakes across Kosciusko County. Those swift and fluid maneuvers stem from a solid core, which serves as the foundation for physical fitness.

The Core: The Body’s Foundation The body’s core, or midsection, includes a series of muscles in the abdomen, lower back, hips, and pelvis.

Working in unison, these muscles redistribute movement to protect the spine from severe stress, thus stabilizing the body. Developing a strong core delivers a host of benefits, from improved posture and balance to greater athletic capabilities. “Core strength is essential to improving our overall movement,” said David Elsner, Wellness Program Coordinator at Kosciusko Community YMCA. He added, “It will help you move comfortably, feel stable on your feet on long days, and avoid consistent injuries.”

Over time, our cores can become weakened, and require attention. Sitting for long periods with poor posture, for example, contributes to a weakened core. As Elsner explained, “Consistent back pain, body aches, and trouble with balance can all be signals that our core needs strengthening.” He suggests aiming for two to three core-focused exercise sessions per week. With that level of commitment, your strength and stability may improve in as little as a few weeks.

How To Strengthen Your Core Elsner recommends planks, bridges, and exercises like Pilates or yoga for building core strength. “Even simple moves like standing on one leg or using a stability ball can make a big difference,” he said. But different age groups sometimes achieve results via alternate routes. Children will benefit from playful movement, while older adults might engage in gentle, balancefocused exercises like heel lifts, sit-tostands, or marching in place.

“The key,” Elsner said, “is to match the intensity and style to your body’s needs.” And gains in strength and stability are not limited to participation in structured exercise programs.

Training for 5K: On Your Mark Get in shape with core strengthening exercises, and then follow these tips when training for a 5K run: • Start slowly • Build up distance gradually, and alternate with walking if necessary • Wear good running shoes • Stretch • Schedule rest days

“Through activities such as bringing in the groceries or chasing after your kids,” Elsner noted, “our core does a lot of behind-the-scenes work.”

Core Effect On Mental Wellbeing Although most often associated with physical health, core strengthening also contributes to mental wellbeing.

When a strong core leads to more efficient movement and improved balance, an individual may achieve previously unattainable goals. If, for instance, core strengthening exercises result in reduced pain and greater mobility, the person may enjoy a greater sense of confidence and independence.

Becoming self-aware, or recognizing and understanding your thoughts and emotions, is instrumental to balancing emotional health. Think about your thoughts and record them—both positive and negative—in a journal or list.

Determine what triggers certain emotions, and how your body responds to them. Does your heart race? Does your stomach flutter? Assessing your world and learning to reframe negative thoughts will help you to better cope with life’s challenges.

Practicing gratitude and mindfulness, being physically active, following a nutritious diet, and getting sufficient sleep will guide you toward emotional balance. And don’t underestimate the healing powers of nature.

A refreshing swim, a gentle paddle, or a berry-picking excursion can relieve stress and boost your mood.

Maintaining strength and stability of body and mind plays a crucial role in overall wellbeing. As David Elsner pointed out, “Your core is your body’s center of gravity—when it’s strong, your balance improves naturally. It’s like having a built-in stabilizer for everything you do.”

When we hear the word “can’t,” our minds think of lack. Restriction.

‘Can’t’ derives an associated negative connotation. It, however subtly, turns us off.

T

he word ‘can’t’ transports my mind through tunnels of time to a prehistoric era when teachers scolded for: can’t talk out of turn, can’t lose my math homework, can’t dawdle in the hallway, can’t put a toupee on the science room’s skeleton (okay that one I get, but totally worth it).

Can’t. Can’t. Can’t.

While sometimes ‘can’ts’ may be necessary for academic survival + taming ornery adolescents, it plays no part in successful lifestyle transformations = i.e. improving eating habits.

To tweak eating habits, we’re more successful when we begin with a positive mindset. On what we CAN eat that’s good for us.

That’s why even when it comes to nutrition, ‘can’t’ should not be part of our vocabulary. It’s a negative mindset. It’s counterproductive, and once negativity seeps within, we’ve already failed.

Instead of focusing on what we ‘can’t’ eat, we focus on cans. Not cans of sodium-loaded soups or ravioli, either. Cans as in: I can enjoy this. I can taste this. My stomach can easily digest this. I can snack on that. I can fill up on that until the next good-for-me meal.

So let’s look at nutrition from a perspective of opportunity. What are snacking ideas you can enjoy this summer? What foods are we lucky enough to have within our reach to satisfy and be good for our bodies?

Some great displays include a variety of red, white, and blue floral arrangements as an accent to the outdoor landscaping. The floral accents can come in planters and hanging baskets or they may be planted in landscaping beds to create a larger, more thrilling display.

Lately he has seen a transition to the use of Diamond Frost® Euphorbia for the white, mixed with a red geranium, while continuing to use an ornamental spike in the center. The use of lobelia in techno heat blue is a good option for a heat tolerant flower for those boulder beds and seawalls, and gives more longevity in bloom time.

Blue calibrachoa are also starting to be used a lot more in combinations. Any of these red, white and blue floral combinations can also be used in a hanging basket.

At Clayton Garden Center, the most popular item for July is a red, white, and blue petunia basket.

options for display include red geraniums and Lobularia for the white. For blue flowers, Ed Clayton recommends a Scabiosa, Whirlwind Blue or Blue Daze.

For larger potted displays, Becker recommends a trellis of red Mandevilla, which gives the display a height of three feet and color that will last all summer.

This is commonly used in combination with the Diamond Frost Euphorbia or Angel Wings® Senecio for the white, and blue Calibrachoa or blue Ageratum.

If planting in a flowerbed, the bed will need sun exposure all day or at least half the day. The more shade there is, the less options are available for the brighter colors.

For Shade or Partial Sun

If in shade or partial sun, a gardener can create a display of begonias, impatiens or SunPatiens®. However, the most difficult color to find is a vibrant blue.

Paler blue colors are available for the display, such as the blue Ageratum.

Trying different textures and foliage colors or bursts of color mixed with foliage is recommended for shadier planting beds.

The brighter colors will be found more plentifully with annual flowers as opposed to perennials. If looking for a more perennial display, Clayton mentions a red astilbe, though red perennials can be difficult to find. Blue flamingo can provide a blue. White provides lots of options in perennials with daylilies or Shasta daisies. Another issue with perennial flowers can be making sure all the flowers are bloomed at the same time for that Independence Day display.

However, pockets of color for display with annual flowers can be added into a primary perennial display bed.

When considering seasonal landscaping displays, Becker recommends a fivefoot by eight-foot flex space in a sunny area where displays can be switched out based on the season. While it can be nice to have this space filled with perennials, it’s perhaps best to leave space for other options. That way there is room to pop in annuals, seasonal flowers, or displays such as planters, pumpkins and hay bales, or Christmas decorations. It is also important to have complementary landscape lighting to highlight those seasonal displays.

Summer Cocktail Glasses EVERY HOME BAR NEEDS

Drinking a cocktail can be a lot of fun, of course, and put just the right finishing touch on the day. Making them can be just as rewarding, allowing you to conduct your own experiments and tailor your favorite drinks to your personal taste. But the presentation is a key part of the whole process and that’s where the glass comes in. Here are some common cocktail glasses and fun, corresponding cocktails to fill each, beyond the basic G&T or vodka-cran.

NICK & NORA

Originally called the little martini glass, my favorite cocktail glass got its fun new name in the 1980s by “King of Cocktails” Dale DeGroff. Named for the

If you were around in the ‘80s you recognize this party glass. Great for iced drinks like the piña colada or luridly colored bar special drinks like Blue Hawaiians, Painkillers or, of course, Hurricanes. But you can also go easy with cocktails in a hurricane glass.

• 2 ounces gin • ½ ounce maraschino liqueur • ¼ ounce crème de violette • ¾ ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed • 1-2 eyedroppers full of butterfly pea flower extract (optional) • Garnish: brandied cherry Add the gin, maraschino liqueur, crème de violette, and lemon juice to a shaker with ice and shake until well-chilled.

Strain into a chilled Nick & Nora glass.

Garnish with a brandied cherry.

This is often made in a highball glass, but I like the look of it in a hurricane. Try making your own. It’s basically simple syrup made with pomegranate juice instead of water (look up the recipe at Liquor.com, which uses pomegranate molasses for a big flavor boost). If not, at least find a good brand. Adjust the amounts to fill the glass.

• 2 ounces Blanco tequila • 4 ounces orange juice, freshly squeezed • 1/4 ounce grenadine • Orange slice for garnish • Cherry for garnish Add the tequila and the orange juice to a chilled hurricane glass filled with ice. Top with the grenadine by carefully pouring it down the inside of the glass so it sinks to the bottom. Garnish with the orange slice and cherry.

My favorite cocktail for my favorite glass. The Aviation has gin (which I also love) as a base spirit and a fun mix of citrus and liqueurs, and is a beautiful color to boot. To enhance that color, I like to use Magellan gin, which is filtered through iris petals to give it a blue hue, and I add a couple eye drippers full of butterfly pea flower extract (easily found online). It is used in color-changing cocktails because it reacts with the acid in citrus to enhance the purple color.

HIGHBALL

The highball glass is a workhorse glass that is great for everything from gin and tonics to a Tom Collins to a mojito.

Rye is my favorite brown spirit and it goes well in this drink, which is basically a whiskey buck. You can use your favorite whiskey, although I’m not sure you want to get out the good Scotch for this one. A twisted bar spoon is helpful here as you can pour the

OLD-FASHIONED/ DOUBLE OLD-FASHIONED The old-fashioned glass is similar to the basic rocks glass, but often has thinner walls. It’s used to make old-fashioneds, of course, but can also be used for other drinks that take a lot of ice, like a rum and Coke. Double old-fashioned glasses can be used to do the same, although they only tend to hold a couple more ounces, not twice as much, and are good for a double shot of a straight spirit served neat or on the rocks.

COUPE

The coupe is the classic champagne glass you see at wedding toasts, Great Gatsby parties and (in giant hot tub size) burlesque shows. Invented in Italy in the 17th century to hold champagne, it’s also great for cocktails.

• 1 1/2 ounces whiskey • 4 ounces ginger beer • 4 dashes Angostura bitters • 1 lemon wedge Add whiskey, ginger beer, and bitters to a Collins or highball glass filled with ice.

Squeeze lemon wedge over the drink and add the wedge to the glass.

Stir gently to combine.

SOUR GLASS

A sour glass is great for, well, sours, as it’s a little bigger allowing space for foam. It’s a stemmed glass with a bowl on top, sometimes with a flared rim.

BIJOU What to make This is not a cocktail exactly, but food writer and cookbook author Brigid Washington (withbrigid.com) has a terrific way to drink rum in these hot summer months. Freeze coconut water in a large ice cube tray, place in an old-fashioned or (better yet) a doubleold-fashioned glass and pour rum neat over the cube (being Trinidadian, Washington likes House of Angostura 1919, which is quite delicious, but your favorite “good” rum will work.

I’ve made it with Bumbu XO and other golden or dark rums. White rum was too “hot” for my taste). As the coconut cube melts it brings out other flavors in the rum for a simple make but complex tasting cool sipper on hot days.

recipe from Liquor.com Originally invented at the dawn of the late 19th century cocktail era, the Bijou began as a ‘perfect’ cocktail, meaning all ingredients are used in the same ratio, although it has evolved to be a little less sweet.

• 1 ½ ounces gin • 1 ounce sweet vermouth • ¾ ounce green Chartreuse • 2 dashes orange bitters • Garnish: Maraschino cherry (such as Luxardo, Famri Amarena, Journeyman Distillery or Traverse City Whiskey Co.) Add all ingredients except garnish to mixing glass filled with ice and stir until chilled. Strain into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass. Garnish with cherry.

My second favorite cocktail. This is the national cocktail of Peru and Chile.

Peruvian pisco is my favorite, but Chile also produces excellent pisco.

All varieties differ in flavor so have fun trying them out.

• 2 ounces pisco • 1 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed • 1/2 ounce simple syrup • 1 egg white • Angostura bitters for garnish Add pisco, lime juice, simple syrup, and egg white into a shaker and dryshake (without ice) vigorously. I like to overdo it and go as long as a minute.

Be sure to let the pressure off of your shaker slowly.

Add ice and shake again until wellchilled. Strain into a chilled sour glass.

Garnish with 3 to 5 drops of Angostura bitters. Either leave the drops as is or drag a toothpick or swizzle stick through the drops of bitters to make a pattern.
