“Get. To. It.”
Spoken succinctly and with pause between each word, such is the direction from my mom.
If I had a dollar for each time in my life this phrase floated from Mom’s pretty lipstick to sucker-smack me in the face, I’d be superbly wealthy, lounging beneath a palm tree on Sue Island getting to nothing but a piña colada in my hand. Or maybe one in each hand.
But ne’er once did Mom say what I didn’t need to hear. She’s always right. And always of clear mind. It’s so weird.
Yes, my mom’s mind is organized like yesteryear’s library card catalog. Solid. Everything in its place. Its content categorized by a Dewey Decimal-like Classification System. Such is her brain—only further enhanced by a recall center of infallible facts within her hippocampus.
My brain? It’s more like the hippo trampled through the card catalog, scattering data amidst a fun, windy funnel. And data may fall where it lands. And I like it that way.
Another difference between us is the time zone in which we reside. Despite the miles, Mom and I have weekly ‘coffee talks.’ She texts me when vertical. We each make a cup of coffee. I call her, and we talk away life’s concerns, laugh at our faux pas, and celebrate what is joyous among our family. She listens to my tales, absorbs my stresses, and as needed, tosses a verbal lasso to yank my freespirited ambitions back to the here and now. Get to it
She speaks with love, listens with compassion, and supports all ambitions, in good time. Maybe just like your mom
At 83 years young, Mom’s social life is waayyyy more exciting than mine, her sense of adventure is just as strong, and her independence is inspirational. She does not slow down. She does not stop. She’s relentless about learning. About growing. Until her cell rings. Then her world stops and I’m gifted with undivided attention. There’s nothing better. I bet you can relate.
Yes, in May we say, ‘Thanks, Mom.’ So, let’s make Mother’s Day extra special this year. Prepare her breakfast. Send flowers. Have your own coffee talk. You’ll be the sunshine in her day—perhaps even more than usual.
And speaking of sunshine, it’s in May when brilliant rays arrive with more consistency. (Finallllly.) Yes, weather is warming. Flowers bloom brilliantly. Trees leaf, gardens grow, and even the water looks a bit more blue.
We enjoy the gift of another sunrise and in the evenings, we dine al fresco, grateful for all that surrounds. We focus on family, friends, and appreciation for the profound wonder of beautiful simplicities. Because they’re really not simple at all.
And in this issue, please enjoy our special section: ‘Weddings At The Lake.’ The response from our readership was fabulous. We graciously thank our couples, and we hope you enjoy in their celebrations. In May, we also pray with humble reverence on Memorial Day to those who made the greatest sacrifice for our country. Please refer to page 49 for a profound event you won’t want to miss.
Please continue sharing your comments + photos as you celebrate life— the good, the funny, the warm, and the beautiful. You. Get. Us. And it’s a good thing, as we exist because of—and for—you.
Happy Mother’s Day, Kosciusko County. Keep celebrating this lake life— and embrace each beautiful May moment.
Yes, Get. To. It.
Warmly,
Sue Executive-Editor-And-Get-To-It-Voice-For-Her-Own-Children

This season we bring to our fabulous readership: ‘Ask A Med.’
More than a medical professional, our columnist is a lake guy to his core. Meet Jerry Parsons , PA-C...
He’s active in our community, hubby (for 32 years) to his high school sweetheart (Jen), dad to three amazing grown kids (Zach, Audie, Nolan), Popi to one beautiful granddaughter (Suttyn Joelle), and doggie dad to Winnie and Burton.
Captain Jerry, as some friends refer to him, first came to Webster Lake back in the ‘80s during his high school years. Yes, during the era of big hair and parachute pants, Jerry’s future wife, Jen, introduced him to lake life on Webster (where her parents met a generation prior). Since, he’s been in love with his gal, and our lake community.
Later, while living full-time in Fort Wayne, Jerry, Jen + their children spent summers at Webster Lake, and were actively involved in Ski-Bees + more. The Parsons family moved full-time to Webster Lake in 2017, and Jerry served as a board member of both the Webster Lake Association and the North Webster Chamber of Commerce. Then in 2022, Jerry and Jen moved to Lake Wawasee, full-time.
This cooking + grilling connoisseur is most definitely a foodie who enjoys entertaining family + friends at the lake, boating, and when not at the lake, Jerry enjoys time with Jen traveling around the country.
Graduated from Ball State (BS in Athletic Training + Exercise Science + Wellness), Jerry studied Kinesiology in graduate school at the University of Northern Colorado, and graduated from Kettering College of Medical Arts in Physician Assistant Studies.
And since? He’s dedicated 29 years as a PA, he’s worked in Ortho Trauma at both Ortho Indy + Fort Wayne Orthopedics, and has nearly three decades of experience working in Urgent Care and Occupational Medicine. Now a Syracuse resident, this kindhearted, fun loving medical pro continues to assist our community—at the Walk-In Family Practice Clinic in Syracuse (lucky us!).
Thank you, Jerry, for your participation + expert medical direction for our readership this season. We’re beyond thrilled to welcome you to our pages, Cap’n.
Do you have a question for Jerry? Send it in! sue@lakelifemagazine.com.

Welcome to the May masthead! Yes, greetings from the small print, the abyss so often alone, overseen, and saturated with legal mummbitty jumbibitty.
But not this masthead. No sir/ma’am.
Yes, welcome to the May masthead, in our fourth season of fun-errific existence. Lake season is gaining momentum and soon we’ll be crunching on salty chips, sweet watermelon, and day-old ‘zza on the dock. #wins.
AmmI right?
April showers came and went, and May flowers are a’burst with blooms. Bicycle tires are pumped, the grass needs cut, waters await Memorial Day motors + fun, and by golly it’s time to stock the snack bar, wash the lake towels, toss the old sunscreen and buy a’new.
What a busy month.
Yes, in May students are eager to complete the schoolyear, college kids are graduating, and teachers? Well, teachers, you deserve our awe and thanks. If you were here, I’d make you a drink. Or, maybe you just need a fluffy pillow and a nap. I’d give you my pillow, too. (And personal thanks to my future daughter-inlove Natalie who is finishing her first year as a full-time teacher. I love you, Nat!)
Yes, May waters are still pretty dern cold, but temps are gaining and spirits are soaring as brilliant sunshine will soon dominate! Yes, lake life is alive and we invite everyone to join us for SO. MUCH. FUN. Let’s pause to watch sunsets. Let’s gather ‘round the grill with neighbors. Let’s hear laughter. Feel the breeze. And like Otis, let’s sit on the dock of the bay.
In May we’re revving up lake engines. We’re Cinco de Mayo’ing all over the place. We’re giving moms extra loves. And, indeed, we are paying humble reverence to all fallen heroes who have defended this great nation.

Yes, it’s a month of celebration, appreciation, and remembrance. Breezes are warm and our insides glow all glowy. We celebrate life, and we celebrate YOU. This is your magazine. Our team creates it with and for you. You should see us donned with paintbrushes, crayons, scissors, glue, and our LAKElife smocks. We’re like the fifth grade Art class of your past. Except we like margaritas.
Speaking of art, a fierce blindfolded paint-off shall soon ensue between Ron and yours truly. Move. Over. Monet. As usual, the competition begins the second Tuesday of the third week, and ends when I spill my brush water cup.
Back to Ron… he’s the region’s publisher extraordinaire, as masterful as Monet, and the man behind the scenes. It’s thanks to Ron that LAKElife Magazine is published for you. Yes, by The Papers Inc.—the same publishing house that’s been serving communities for 84 years, located at 206 S. Main Street, Milford, Indiana, 46542.
Yes, we’re grateful to serve you, and we embrace the coming season of good times, chill-out moments, sunshine soaking, splishy-splashing, the screen door still left open, mosquitoes inside, and good times with family + friends. It’s what it’s all about.
Our office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, except for the second Thursday of each week when I totally blow off work to throw back a few. Don’t tell Ron. And on Cinco de Mayo? Fuh-gett about it.
Before I forget, here’s the only required paragraph of the masthead: ‘It shall be known that all rights whatsoever are reserved and nothing may be reproduced without the written consent of the publisher, who also assumes no responsibility as a result of any information or items advertised herein.’

Letters to the Editor
Thank you for a wonderful magazine. I love it. Spent summers at my grandparents’ cottage on Willis Park. Do you have a picture of the point, as standing on the Dixie site and looking east... would be the Willis Park point. I would love to see pics from there. Fond memories. 1940-1960 is when they sold cottage. Thanks.
–Diane Dewey-Norvell, Springfield, IL
Would any Webster Lake friends be so kind as to oblige with a photo?
Thanks for all your hard work on a fun magazine. Just a few lake pictures to share of our grandchildren. Wishing you continued success with the magazine. Still love the touch and feel of print media!

Hi Sue, We love reading LAKElife Magazine each month. Yesterday, our silver Labrador spent a good share of the day ‘retrieving’ the foam raft. Julian, 13, is swimming beside her, and William, 15, took the photo. The lake water was warm and the sky looked heavenly. After a wonderful lunch at The Oakwood, what more could you ask for on the last day of July? Thank you for creating such a special magazine each month!
–Susan Campbell
She is true to her retriever name, for sure! (Aren’t dogs great… and this whole thing called lake life.) Nice pic, William.

Mom’s Views
by Sue Pais
As moms we see life for its beauty, gifts, and adventure. We understand moments are more than fleeting passages of time; they are opportunity for promise.
Most moms accept that time is a most treasured asset. There is no guarantee for tomorrow, and we know the busyness of today’s routines will be tomorrow’s memories.
As such, we appreciate moments as they occur, focusing on the pitter-patter of bare feet running through the house or down the dock. We watch our children’s (and grandchildren’s) intrigue as the world opens before them. We see their smiles, we absorb their laughter—the most beautiful sound in existence. We know snuggles are as true and pure as most anything in life. And we know their tears lead to healing and growth.
We moms are often behind the camera, capturing moments of our children. Why? So we ne’er forget, and so they are later reminded.

She sees perhaps not through rose-tinted glasses, but a lens of inexplicable love. Such is the focus of most moms.
26 LAKElife Magazine May 2023
When our little ones pause to capture nature—its views, sounds, and touch— we’re witnessing moments of learning. Of expanding individual depth. On shaping who they are and may become.
It’s a mom’s view.
Moments are not minutes. Moments are promise; they’re opportunities for learning, for appreciation, for calming the spirit, or for full-throttle ignition of unabashed joy.
Moms provide grounding to reality (or from the car) when we need it, and during triumphs there is no more exuberant cheerleader. Mom may not be the loudest fan (although she may), but her shared inner triumph is likely more profound than any other. And when adversity occurs, she reminds us it’s an opportunity to grow; to discern circumstance as redirection.
And always, she is love.
So this Mother’s Day, on May 14, let’s show Mom how much she is loved. Let’s really see her smile spread and eyes glisten as she watches her children and grandchildren. Love is, indeed, visible and tangible. Just watch Mom.
Let’s appreciate Mom for who she is, who she was, and all she wishes to be. It’s knowing she’s your rock, your pal, your confidant— and that she is reliable goodness within your life, available with every moment she has to give.
It’s appreciating life’s gifts. It’s appreciating Mom. It’s understanding her vision has depths beyond most views.
Indeed for many, Mom is an essential part of living The Good Life.

INDIANA’S LARGEST RODENT Beaver
by Dr. Nate Bosch, Lilly Center for Lakes & Streams director
Did you know that beaver dams are not where most beavers live?
Although fully capable of constructing lodges, beavers in Indiana prefer to create burrows in the banks of a calm, secluded river, lake, or stream. Part of the nest is below water, with a tunnel to an above-ground chamber. The nest will be made watertight, perfect for raising kits. (A pair of beavers will have 2-3 at a time.)
Beavers are the largest species of rodent in North America, but unlike other rodents, they are semi-aquatic. Beavers can stay underwater for as long as 15 minutes! Although perfectly equipped for swimming (their large, flat tails and webbed hind legs propel them forward) and digging (their front paws have incredible dexterity), beavers are best known for their ability to cut through wood.
Much like other rodents, beavers’ teeth grow constantly.
Their teeth are equipped for the task with a thick, protective layer of orange-tinted enamel. Beavers wear down and sharpen their teeth every day as they gnaw through tree trunks and limbs. They use the cut branches to assemble dams which create their ideal habitat: slowmoving pools of water. In turn, the dams create new habitats for other kinds of critters!
All beavers are on a strict vegetarian diet: twigs (especially willow and aspen), leafy greens like cattails and spatterdock, and certain kinds of roots are suitable. In winter, beavers depend on one another for survival, sharing space and food with their families, usually comprised of a pair of adults, young beavers, and a few kits. They work together to build their nests and store food for the cold months.
Beavers are industrious at all times of the year. Their feats of engineering perform important services for your lake. Beaver dams and the wetlands they create capture sediment and nutrients before they enter the lake. Fewer nutrients mean less food for harmful algae to eat, reducing the risk of toxic algae blooms.
Despite the positive impact beavers have on our waterways, beavers can also be a nuisance. Organizations like the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Beaver Institute provide resources to help you make informed decisions about the beavers in your backyard.
Have questions about how beavers impact your lake? Email the Lilly Center at lakes@grace.edu or give us a call: 574-372-5100, ext. 6446.

Seawalls
Some types of seawalls, like vinyl and concrete, are not as good for our lakes because they disrupt the natural shoreline ecology. Healthier shorelines, including glacial stone and bioengineered seawalls with native plants, reduce wave energy, provide healthy habitat and protect your shoreline from erosion. To learn more, attend a free Healthy Shorelines Workshop on June 1 at Winona Lake Limitless Park, or dig into The Watershed Foundation’s website for example photos and details about plants and permits.
Support Native Plants And Pollinators
If you’re looking for inspiration for your own healthier shoreline and lakeside landscaping, attend the Clean Water Partnership’s Pollinator Workshop on June 19 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation. A 6-pack of native plants will be provided to the first 30 people who register.
Aquatic Plants
There are exotic invasive ‘weeds’ in our lakes that need management. There are also native aquatic plants that are important for a healthy ecosystem. They take up nutrients, slow waves, minimize erosion and provide food and habitat for fish and other wildlife. We need a balance of plants for a healthy lake. You can remove a small amount of
vegetation on your property, but remember that the IDNR requires a permit for any aquatic plant removal over 625 square feet.
Understanding Water Quality
In Our Lakes + Streams
What is phosphorus and how does it affect algae? Why is oxygen important? If you’d like to better understand the ecology of aquatic systems and become a citizen scientist, attend the full-day Hoosier Riverwatch Volunteer Stream Monitoring Training on June 15 at the North Webster Community Center.
Boating Operation & Safety
Minor mistakes can result in tragedy on the water. It’s always a good idea to be up to date on water and boating safety, particularly for those who might be new to the lake or new to operating a boat or jet ski. The Watershed Foundation and Lake Tippecanoe Property Owners Association are partnering with the Indiana DNR to provide a 2-day Safe Boating Class June 21-22 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Patona Bay Resort and Marina.
Support Events That Support Healthy Lakes
The Watershed Foundation is hosting two fun and engaging fundraising events this summer! Your participation—as a sponsor or volunteer—helps protect and improve the health of the land and lakes in our community. Get these dates on your calendar and contact TWF to get involved. We will dance the night away at Tippy Dance Hall on June 24 for the 5th annual Dance at Tippy. And, the Tippy Cottage Tour returns after a 5-year hiatus on July 29.
To learn more about these events and how you can take action with TWF for our land, lakes, and watershed, visit WatershedFoundation.org or contact us at admin@watershedfoundation.org or 574.834.3242.

Great Outdoors TREAT TO THE M om
Kayak or canoe our waters… even if you’ve never tried it before.
May
around,
That’s why Mother's Day is a great time to head out on the water. Seasoned outdoor explorers know this for sure, but LAKElife Country offers plenty of ease for getting into fun for the newbie as well. Yes, a Mother's Day paddle with mom is a great way to enjoy the day—without even the need for equipment!
Where To Go?
If getting into nature is the goal, Tippy River Adventures, 4220 W. Old U.S. 30, Warsaw, is a good place to start. The company, which opened in 2022, specializes in getting people onto the Tippecanoe River to see the natural part of Kosciusko County from a different angle.
“We’re all about introducing people to the river,” said Ryan Martin, co-owner of Tippy River Adventures, adding that everything they do is rooted in education, recreation, and conservation.
WATER LIFE | MAKING WAVES
By the time
rolls
the weather has more or less settled into a comfortable rhythm, with snow highly unlikely (thank goodness), but without intense heat and humidity.
38 LAKElife Magazine May 2023
People can rent canoes or kayaks for two- and fourhour excursions, or bring their own equipment and simply book transportation to and from the river.
And for beginners, there’s no need to worry. A little planning can help. Tippy River offers beginner kayaking instruction as interest dictates, usually during the week, so a newcomer can get any anxieties out of the way before a relaxing and enjoyable weekend paddle.
“One of the things we noticed is people would say ‘I’ve never kayaked before,’” Martin said. “They’re a little nervous. (But) it’s really easy. With most people who get going on a beginner course, 30 minutes in and they get the hang of it.”
Guided Floats
And for fans of birds and other river fauna, the company also offers guided floats with stops to pull in and catch your breath while a guide—such as Martin’s wife, Melanie, who is a state-certified advanced master naturalist—explains the significance of that particular spot on the river. Last year alone, the Martins documented muskrats, blue heron, hawks, eagles, and river otters, along with a number of other animals.
The company has also continued its efforts to clear obstacles and debris from the river where appropriate, so the entirety of the Tippecanoe River that falls within the county can be relatively easy to navigate.
But the river is only one choice. If lakes are more Mom’s vibe, then LAKElife Country abounds with ways to get close to the water.
Have ‘Em Delivered
Pedals & Paddles, 105 E. Esterbrook Drive, North Webster, offers kayaks and standup paddleboards for the water, and bicycles for the land. And you don’t necessarily have to begin your day at the store.
“We’re very hands on,” said Keenan Van Wert, a sales associate at Pedals & Paddles. “We deliver and pick up if you just want to be pampered.”
Pedals & Paddles delivers and picks up within about a 15-mile radius (from their store) for $10, with an extra charge to go farther. Spots they’ve gone to include the public launch near the Dixie Sternwheeler on Webster Lake, as well as Syracuse and Backwater Lakes and Lake Wawasee, among others.
Kayak choices range from the classic, sit-in style, to the sit-ontop style, as well as tandems. The kayaks are helpful for some of the smaller or quieter lakes, Van Wert said, because some have tunnels (under a road, for example) that only a small craft can get through.
Make A Day Of It
And should dining and shopping less than a stone’s throw away sound appealing before or after a float, The Lake House, 720 E. Canal St., Winona Lake, can handle the boat rentals easily enough, as well as your lake wear shopping needs. And its location in the Village At Winona allows for a stroll through the shops as well as dining options (be sure to check ahead if you go this route, though, because while The Lake House is open on Sunday, not every establishment in Winona Lake will also be open).

CATCHES GREAT EATS
by Loren Shaum
Great eating awaits those who explore LAKElife lakes. Bluegill and crappie are the most popular, and I like them grilled. If fishing is not your thing, a few local restaurants offer bluegill.
Although some eat anything they catch, the most edible fish in local waters are pike, rock bass, sunfish, perch and its relative, walleye. Last April, our grandson, Eli, snagged a whopper white bass (pictured left) from Lake Wawasee. Prepared properly, white bass can also be good eating!
WATER LIFE | The Reel Story
SpringFishing 42 LAKElife Magazine May 2023
However, there is one fish revered by anglers for its fight and taste: behold the walleye. With spring upon us, anglers are out in abundance seeking treasures from local waters. One of the most revered catches is, indeed, the crafty walleye. April through early June have proven to be the most productive months for capturing this prized specimen. Joe Denton, owner of Ye Old Tackle Box in North Webster said, “Walleye started to run as early as March this year.”
Note: Sauger and saugeye are often confused as walleye, but generally they are not as large, fin coloring is different, and they don’t have as much gold color in their skin.
Catching Walleye
Walleye lurk along rocky lake bottoms during the day and feed on small fish, so live or imitation minnows are a good choice to catch walleyes’ attention. They tend to migrate to shallower water as light dims, hence, experts suggest the best time to catch walleye is between sunset and sunrise.
On occasion, walleye feed voraciously making fast, brightly colored baits attractive. Such baits can trigger a strikeout of pure aggression. A bait recommended by Denton is the Berkley Warpig Junior lipless crankbait. These blunt-nosed baits easily migrate through weed beds and bounce off rocks.
On other occasions, walleye are so inactive that casting must be slow and easy to attract a lethargic fish. Dave Greathouse, owner of Track and Channel
Outdoors in Syracuse, suggests the Strike King red-eyed shad. This flashy bait can get the attention of any fish.
Regardless of how inviting your presentation is, the best place to find this prized catch is with your bait a few feet from the lake’s bottom.
Where are they?
• According to Denton, spring walleye catches have been reported in Winona and Pike lakes.
• Greathouse advises that Dewart Lake has been a good spot using live or artificial night crawlers.
• Walleye were stocked in Lake Wawasee in the ‘80s but there have yet to be many catches recorded and several locals say there are none in the lake.
• A survey years ago showed walleye lurking in the Tippecanoe River north of Rochester. A few major catches have been recorded over the years.
• The minimum size on walleye is 16 inches in these waters. The largest 2022 catch was a 30-incher captured in nearby Sylvan Lake.
Potato-crusted walleye
INGREDIENTS:
1, 12-14-ounce walleye fillet, scales removed All-purpose flour
1 egg
1 tablespoon buttermilk
Old Bay seasoning
Salt and pepper
1 cup potato flakes
1 tablespoon panko bread crumbs
Extra virgin olive oil
Butter
DIRECTIONS:
• I generally brine fish in buttermilk for a few hours before preparing but found that walleye doesn’t need that step.
• Rinse fish in cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Coat the fillet all over with flour. Shake off excess.
• Whisk the egg and buttermilk until smooth. Dip the fillet in the egg mixture to coat.
• Combine the Old Bay, a pinch of salt and a couple cranks of ground pepper with the potato flakes and panko. Combine thoroughly, then roll fillet in the mixture to coat all over.
• Meanwhile, heat oil and butter over medium-high heat until the butter melts. Add the fish, skin-side down, and sear until crisp and brown—about two minutes. Carefully flip the fish over and cook until crisp and brown—another two to three minutes. Gently remove fish to a paper-towel lined plate and keep warm before serving.
• Serve with a side of wild rice pilaf.
Eating Walleye
Most store-bought walleye is sourced from Canada or Michigan, and it can be exceptional, properly prepared.
Local restaurants serving walleye are the Down Under in Syracuse (their almond-crusted preparation is excellent!) and the Barbee Hotel Restaurant.
Walleye is also easy to grill. Serve it with a lemon-caperbutter for a stellar meal.
In cooler weather, try sauteed potato-crusted walleye.
If you can capture this exclusive creature, enjoy it. It’s my go-to freshwater fish dinner when it can be found.

At Dusk. 30+ musicians scattered around Wawasee, Syracuse, and Papakeechie lakes play ‘Taps’ at 9:09 p.m. after a one-minute period of silent reverence at 9:08 p.m. Hugely popular—all LAKElife area restaurants pause for this as well.

THINK GLOBAL, ACT LOCAL This
by Pam Schumm, WACF
You’ve probably driven by the WACF sign and read the words “Think Global, Act Local,” but have you stopped to think about what they really mean? How can you—one person—make a difference?
We love our lakes community, and we want to preserve it for future generations, but what does this look like on a daily basis?
Come to the EARTH DAY FESTIVAL at WACF and learn how you can make a difference by acting locally to help our ecosystem. This year’s theme for our annual free event is “Invest in Planet Earth.”
It all starts at home on a small level, with each person doing ‘his or her part.’
Bring the children and grandchildren to see all the vendors. Each vendor offers something unique. The Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation wants to help families invest in their children and the environment for future generations by adopting some environmentally-friendly family traditions.
We have nearly 20 vendors lined up to offer education and added appreciation for our ecosystem and discover ways you and your family can help preserve our ecosystem. There will be monarch activities, bird migrations, games to learn the difference between native and invasive plants, trail maps and duck identification activities—plus much more, including a free lunch and free admission!
Earth Day Festival at WACF (11586 SR 13 in Syracuse) will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on May 6. Pick up your family goodie bag at the registration tent, then browse the grounds to enjoy and learn how you, too, can act locally to preserve and protect our environment for future generations.

Farfalle with Salmon, Peas + Herbs
Treat your favorite mom to this light and easy to throw together dish. This super versatile meal is equally as healthy. She’ll feel pampered and loved, just like she deserves to feel every day. Use gluten-free or veggie-based pasta for even more health benefits.
INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 pounds skinless salmon fillet
1 package (10 ounces) frozen peas
1/4 cup chopped fresh mint (or basil, parsley, dill as desired) plus more for serving
1 pound farfalle pasta
Juice and finely grated zest of 2 lemons
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
Coarse salt + ground pepper
Parmesan cheese, optional
DIRECTIONS
Cook pasta in a large pot of boiling, salted water according to package. Drain, reserving 1 cup pasta water. Return pasta to pot.
Season salmon with salt and pepper, and place in a medium skillet. Add 1/4 cup of the pasta water, the lemon juice, and zest. Bring to a low boil over medium heat, cover, and let steam for 10 minutes.
Add peas, and continue to steam, covered, until peas are tender and salmon is opaque throughout, 2 to 3 more minutes.
Place contents of skillet on top of pasta; add the butter and herbs. Season with salt and pepper. Toss carefully to combine, gently breaking salmon into large flakes. Add reserved remaining pasta water as necessary to smooth sauce. Serve immediately, sprinkled with additional herbs and parmesan cheese, if desired.

Basics On Cilantro
Herbs are known to add incredible flavor, aroma, and richness to dishes. And cilantro may just be the most prolific.
Add cilantro to any Mexican dish, chicken dish, or Asian dish—or just about any dip or salsa—and cilantro will undoubtedly add robust freshness that just can’t be derived from anything else. And a bonus? It’s simple to grow.
LAKE EATS | The Herb
64 LAKElife Magazine May 2023
Planting:
In spring, sow seeds directly into the earth and continue with successive plantings, every three weeks to keep a fresh, robust crop available as needed until the first frost in fall. Cilantro grows easily, without fuss, and no need for thinning.
Too, cilantro can be grown indoors for fresh leaves yearround. However, unlike other gardeners’ favorites, cilantro is not one to start indoors with intention to transplant outdoors… the transplant stress will likely cause early bolting (premature flowering).
Companions:
Companion planting is the practice of growing different plants together for mutual benefit.
Cilantro’s besties are:
• flowers — coreopsis, sweet alyssum, cosmos, zinnias, sunflowers
• vegetables —leafy vegetables like spinach, cabbage, lettuce, kale, kohlrabi, sugar snap peas, beans, potatoes
• other herbs — basil, dill, parsley
Avoid growing basil with:
Lavender, thyme, sage, rosemary, fennel
Cinco de Mayo is almost here… so why not make your own Pico de Gallo? And yes, de nada.
Pico De Gallo INGREDIENTS
6 medium tomatoes ½ cup fresh cilantro
2 large cloves garlic ½ medium red onion
1 small jalapeño
DIRECTIONS
Chop all your ingredients into small pieces (the finer the chop, the stronger the release of flavor, and the better texture you’ll have). Top with a squirt of lime juice, if desired. Stir and serve— with pita bread, tortilla chips—and perhaps

Meet: Artist Mary Pat Wallen
by Ray Balogh | photos submitted by Mary Pat Wallen
Lifetime Wawasee area resident and internationally renowned sculptor and custom artist Mary Pat Wallen works the first 12.
“I wake up at 5 a.m., research galleries and art, devotions, exercise, make breakfast, lunch and dinner, and then head off to my happy place to work ‘til 5 p.m.,” she said.
Several decades of diligently plying that winning formula has served Wallen quite well. She has been invited to exhibit her artwork at international
shows in prestigious venues in Fort Lauderdale; Chicago; New York City; Santa Fe; Atlanta; West Palm Beach; The Hamptons; Art Miami; and Indianapolis.
Since 1987, she has been commissioned to create custom artwork for four of the largest U.S.- and Italian-based yacht companies in the world.
She acquired her unflagging passion for art for a couple reasons, not the least of which was self-preservation. “Coming from a very large family with 11 siblings, I quickly learned that art was a way to stand out from the others, or at times, escape,” said Wallen, who turns 60 this year. “I create art for my sanity. My studio is an absolute mess, but it is my happy place. It is where I go to regain my peace so I can return home, hopefully, a better person.
“As a child, I grew up with the summer cottage and the whole lake experience, and to this day, our family remains together, spending our summers filled with endless days of lounging and swimming,” she said. “Now the joy has been doubled with the addition of grandchildren. These are family bonding moments and they are priceless!
“Being on the lake adds so much joy to my life, joy that one can only hope will bubble over into my art.”
Most of Wallen’s artwork, which can be commissioned through marypatwallen. com, is custom. “I love the collaboration process with the client. Through multiple phone conversations and sketches, I get to know the client, their taste and their style. I am honored to have a piece of my work in their surroundings. It’s the ‘ooh la la’ moment that makes me want to keep producing art.”
And she is nowhere near finished with her life’s adventures in art. She
is constantly pushing the envelope on the minimalist element to her sculptures, working on a “technique that allows me to remove more of the figure and still expose the beauty.”
It’s not just a technique for her. “I feel it’s a metaphor for all of us,” she said. “Beauty isn’t just on the outside. At some point, we need to succumb to the fact that our outer beauty is decaying. It is the inner beauty, the soul, that is continuously being renewed in its full beauty.
“Art isn’t just about something looking pretty. It’s supposed to make you feel something. This is currently the challenge I am trying to overcome. ”
For more information, visit marypatwallen.com or email marypatwallen@gmail.com. To see some of her artwork on display, check out Fort Wayne Museum of Art’s Paradigm Gallery.

Family Outdoor Activities for Spring
by Mary Jane Bogle
One of the biggest benefits of living in Northeast Indiana is the changing of the seasons. After months of cold temperatures and dark winter afternoons, everyone is more than ready for some fresh air and sunshine! What better way to capitalize on all that cabin fever than with some outdoor family fun?
Need some inspiration to get those creative juices flowing? Consider these five fun ideas, or make plans of your own. Just be sure to snag some great pics and tag #LakeLifeMag when you post to social media.
Go on a color-based scavenger hunt. Who doesn’t love the burst of color that spring in Indiana brings? See how many different colors you can find as you embark on a walk through the neighborhood or hike one of the region’s many nature trails. Keep a notebook handy to record everything you see: a robin’s red breast, a purple crocus, a lemonyellow daffodil, or a brilliant tulip reaching for the sky. Wrap up the day with a painting party, where everybody takes paint to canvas to capture a favorite nature sighting. For even more fun, ditch the individual canvases for a larger-than-life collage, where everyone paints an image on an old bedsheet.

Fun
Play at the park. You don’t have to make extravagant plans to enjoy that Indiana sunshine. Sometimes a trip to your local playground is all you need to get those arms pumping and legs jumping. Add an extra layer of fun by creating a playground obstacle course. And there’s always playground tag, where anyone whose feet touch the ground is
Navigate the waterways. With Indiana’s spring-fed lakes, the water temperatures might be too frigid for all but the bravest of souls who crave an ice-cold polar plunge! But that doesn’t mean you can’t explore the region’s lakes and channels. Grab a kayak or two—or rent one from Pedals & Paddles in North Webster—and start navigating the waterways. Be sure to brush up on your stone skipping skills when you return to shore.
Host a backyard game tournament. With enough friends and neighbors, you can re-create your favorite playground games in your own backyard— anything from Red Rover and kickball to croquet and ladder ball. Put all the game ideas in a mason jar and let the youngest pick first. If your tournament extends into the evening hours, consider adding flashlight tag to the mix.
Cook over a campfire.
May is the perfect time to clean out your backyard firepit and stock up on firewood— just in time for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows. Those with a slightly more sophisticated palette can opt for a foil packet stuffed with their favorite meats and veggies, all roasted to perfection in the glowing embers. Wrap up your feast with an evening of stargazing, or invite the neighbors over for an outdoor movie fest.
No matter which outdoor activities you choose, May is also a great time to brush up on your family’s water safety skills. If you’re behind in swim lessons, or you want to take your strokes to the next level, consider enrolling your child in lessons offered at an indoor facility. Then get ready for all that water fun in the coming summer months!

Don’t Get Burned
Skin Cancer + Melanoma Awareness
According to Skin Cancer Foundation:
• having five or more sunburns doubles the risk of melanoma
• 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70
• if skin cancer is not identified early it can be deadly if it is melanoma as it can metastasize (spread throughout the body)
• the two most common types of skin cancer, basal cell and squamous cell, can also be deadly if not treated
Here’s what we asked—and what you should know—answered by our very own LAKElife medical pro, Jerry Parsons, PA-C/ATC, Lutheran Health Physicians, Walk-in Clinic, Syracuse.
What’s the real recommended SPF level for sunscreen?
An SPF of 30 is recommended for all age groups.
When should I apply sunscreen?
It should be applied 30 minutes before going outside, every two hours after initial application if still in the sun, and immediately after swimming or exercising (sweating).
What’s the best practice after I have been sunburned?
• Take Advil/Motrin or Aleve as needed for pain as recommended on package.
• Take Tylenol as needed for pain as recommended on package.
• Take a 24-hour antihistamine in the morning, Pepcid/Zantac twice daily and/ or Benadryl at bedtime as needed for itching.
• Wear loose-fitting clothes.
• Stay in an air-conditioned room.
• Sleep on an air mattress, as this is cooler on the body than a standard mattress.
What should I do if I have a severe sunburn?
See your primary care provider, go to an urgent care clinic, a walk-in clinic, or the ER if you have any of the following symptoms: confusion, fainting, rapid breathing, rapid heart rate, fever, chills, weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, severe pain, significant blisters, localized swelling, long periods of not urinating and/or a rash with red/purple spots.
References: Skin Cancer Foundation
As a water lover, what’s a plan of action to avoid skin cancer and still enjoy the water + sunshine?
Plan your day, take advantage of quieter times (before 10 a.m. and after 4 p.m.) on the lake to enjoy swimming, boating, tubing, skiing, boarding, or surfing. The next best thing(s) are to wear a widebrimmed hat, wear clothing with UVprotection factor, and apply sunscreen.
• Take a cool shower using slightly cooler than your normal body temperature water, or soak in a tub with cool water. It may be beneficial to add oatmeal to the bath to help soothe inflammation.
• Do not use soap to wash skin until burn has resolved.
• Pat skin dry after bathing with a soft towel.
• Apply aloe vera gel frequently.
• Apply 1% hydrocortisone cream (available over-the-counter) as needed to areas for localized itching.

Precious moments etch themselves within our memories. We remember how we felt. We remember our surroundings. We can still envision the details.
So when it’s time to exchange marital vows of forever, of eternal love + blessed companionship, where better to share nuptials than the setting that means the most to so many?
Yes, we’re celebrating WEDDINGS AT THE LAKE!
We asked the readership to share their moments. They responded with wedding bells ringing and spoons tapping glassware across the county—all eager to share their most precious moments.
Enjoy… and warmest congratulations (and thank you) to all our featured couples.
Weddings at the Lake The Proposal
Weddings bells have not yet rung, but a romantic surprise proposal of epic proportions certainly did. Meet Joseph Carn + Sarah Hinrichs. Here’s the proposal moment in-action, from May 2022. After six years together and seven summers enjoyed at Lake Wawasee, we think there was no better place for a proposal. Wouldn’t you agree?

Married at Oakwood Resort
Legally married on November 14, 2020, Addison and Abbey had to push their formal ceremony and reception to the following summer. “I actually got Covid the week of our (November) wedding,” Abbey said, “and the Oakwood was so gracious and kind to help with accommodating a new date. It could not have worked out any more perfectly to move it to July as our guests were able to enjoy Lake Wawasee in all of its summertime glory!” With the wedding and reception held at Oakwood, the couple was also treated to a special boat ride along the shores of Lake Wawasee— the same lake where Abbey began frequenting at just four DAYS old, and where she is a 4th-generation summer resident. “The Wawasee Wooden Boat Club does wooden boat sendoffs for a small charitable donation,” Abbey said. “The Knecht family was so sweet to offer to take us in their beautiful Italian wooden boat named ‘Sweet Pea.’ They even brought us champagne to do a toast!”

Kolby and Lauren were married lakefront, at the home of Lauren’s parents, Darryl and Anita Holderman, on Lake Syracuse. Darryl even became ordained so he could conduct the wedding ceremony of his daughter. “It was just a gorgeous day,” Anita said. “The backdrop of Lake Syracuse for this wedding was perfect! The beautiful, puffy white clouds floating in the blue skies. The shimmer of the water from the sun. The coolness of the evening as the sun set. Family, friends, and neighbors gathered together to celebrate this special day… what a blessing!” What a blessing, indeed.

Married at St. Martin’s Catholic Church
It was a beautiful wedding at St. Martin’s Catholic Church, then a gorgeous reception was held lakeside—after a special commute from the church to the reception. “(After the ceremony) we then sailed my wife's family’s A Scow back to their lake house on the east side of the lake where we held the reception,” Andrew said. “The Megara Collective was our photographer and she did an amazing job! The day turned out absolutely incredible.”

Madeline is a fifth-generation laker, whose family has had their lake home on Kale Island for more than 100 years! Where else could a wedding possibly be held than in their LAKElife area called home? After the wedding at Saint Martin De Porres Catholic Church, a stunning wedding reception was held at Oakwood Resort. “My sister, Megan Peabody, also got married at the same church in 2016, with her reception at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club,” Madeline said. And also included in the photographs? “Yes, they’re my parents Dan and Susan Kiley,” Madeline said. What a gorgeous day + beautiful celebration.

Scott + Chrissy Eller
October 2, 2020, Lake Wawasee Married at All Saints Episcopal Church
A lifelong lake resident, Chrissy is a Lake Wawasee native, even graduating from Wawasee High School in 2003. “I grew up on the lake, my entire life at pier 100,” she said. “Both my grandparents owned lake houses on Rosella St./Ogden Island on Lake Wawasee growing up, and that is how my parents met. So there is a special place in my heart for Wawasee.” Married right on the lake during a cloudy October day was the picture-perfect dream for Chrissy. “The foliage was beautiful… and there was a red maple just down the road from my parents’ house where we stopped to take a picture; it was so spectacular,” she said. Due to Covid, the Ellers wedding was held outdoors, overlooking the lake, just as Chrissy wanted. “We had a violinist during the ceremony, and our reception was in a railcar at The Old Train Depot in Pierceton,” she said. “We had a very simple wedding with just immediate family attending, which I still wouldn’t change.”

Looking for solace, selfcare, and healthy luxury at home? With a few simple additions to your current home furnishings—or upgrades to your existing home spa—you can turn your house into a healthy oasis for leisure and relaxation.
Facial Steamer – Want to achieve facial salon-results on your own? Try a facial steamer. These devices offer budgetfriendly cleansing, all from the comfort of home. Some of the many benefits of weekly facial steaming include cleansed pores, increased circulation, hydration, and sinus congestion relief. Steaming can even enhance your skin’s ability to absorb facial products. Just be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations to avoid skin damage.

MOM’S 2023 GUIDE TO
Saunas – If you’re considering a home renovation, you might want to incorporate a standard or infrared sauna into your remodeling plans. Much like massage chairs, saunas can improve circulation, ease tension, and improve joint pain. Just remember to avoid alcohol consumption, limit your time in the sauna to avoid dehydration, and drink lots of water to replenish the loss of fluids. Saunas range in price based on a wide variety of options, including the type of heat, custom finishes, and any electrical upgrades required before installation.
Float Therapy Deprivation Tanks – If you suffer from chronic pain or stress—and have space in your home—a float therapy deprivation tank might offer much-needed relief. Also called isolation tanks or flotation tanks, these tanks are filled with a foot or less of medical-grade saltwater and offer a dark, soundproof environment that restricts stimulation. Floating in this kind of tank can reduce chronic pain, tension headaches, and high blood pressure, as well as increase immune function.
Himalayan Salt Features – If you’re installing a home sauna—or want to boost the benefits of a sauna currently in your home—you might want to think about adding Himalayan salt, either in crystals, tiles, or entire wall panels. These salts increase the benefits of an in-home sauna by improving your mood, skin quality, and respiration. They also help your body detox after a long day of stress.
Local Health Spas
Massage Chair – One easy addition to your home furnishings that can yield amazing health benefits is a massage chair. These chairs offer many of the benefits of a personal massage and have been proven to reduce tension, relax and loosen sore muscles, and improve your cardiovascular health. They have even been known to address mood swings.
A final benefit of these in-home spa creations is improved sleep, making the investment well worth the time and expense for those seeking a good night’s rest.
If you’d rather enjoy the kind of pampering that a med spa provides—or you’re looking for more intensive services—you don’t have far to travel. Medical spa services range from facials, fillers, body contouring, and detox treatments. Here are a few med spas for your consideration:
• Belle Sante Med Spa: 5010 W. Jefferson Blvd., Fort Wayne, 260.217.7476

For The Love Of Lilacs
by Courtney Hladish
The long-awaited-for scents of spring are here. Yes, Mother Nature is flourishing with blossoms!
Acommon scent we naturally associate with this time of year is the delicate, soft fragrance of lilac.
Did you know the scent of lilac symbolizes virtue and emotions of love?
Lilacs are among the first spring flowers to bloom and share their gentle, peaceful scent. How fitting as Mother’s Day is just around the corner (it’s Sunday, May 14!).
While the scent of lilac in nature has shown to emit within us a calming feeling, beyond the yard lilac has added benefits as well: with your skincare routine. Lilac in the form of an essential oil for your skincare
routine, that is. When used properly, a lilac essential oil can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and give your skin an extra healthy glow. Too, lilac tea is a healthy alternative for your morning or evening routine, as it’s known to aid in digestion.
Here are a few lilac scented products to consider for your Mother’s Day celebration this year:
• Organic Lilac Essential Oil: add a few drops of essential oil into your favorite moisturizer, serum, or facial oils. Lilac oils help calm stressed-out skin, reduce acne, and fight wrinkle-causing freeradicals. Available at skylaressentials.com.
• Aerin Lilac Path Perfume for Mom: it’s a crisp, delicate, lush fragrance we bet she’ll love. Available at esteelauder.com.
• Lilac Tea: make a cup for Mom! See recipe at right.

Who knew lilac blooms are great for making a gentle tea? This recipe will make approximately one cup of tea.
INGREDIENTS
• 1.5 tablespoons of fresh lilac flowers (about 1 blossom head) or 1 tablespoon dried lilac blossoms
• 1 cup of hot water
• Raw honey, sugar (or any sweetener of choice), to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
• When lilacs are in season, remove fresh flowers from the lilac blossom’s head and place in your cup, or if using dried blossoms, pour 1 tablespoon in the cup.
• Add boiling water. Steep for at least 10-15 minutes to allow the flavor to really infuse.
• You can choose to leave the lilac blossom in your cup, or drain, separating the lilac blossoms from your tea.
• Add honey or sugar to taste for a really lovely, light and refreshing lilac tea recipe that will let you relax and unwind.

It’s a serving of paradise, savored across Kosciusko County, and the perfect setting for dining al fresco.
While the picnic lunch remains a staple in the lakes region, the ultimate al fresco experience involves more than paper plates and lawn furniture. Before planning the menu and chilling the wine, explore the following suggestions for staging an impressive outdoor meal at home.
1. Lay a durable foundation. Choose granite planks in dark hues for a stately patio base, or traditional flagstone for rustic charm. Then, define your space with outdoor accessories. Think cedar pergola robed in sheer curtains, customized patio kitchen, or stone fire pit. Maintain a classic feel, or make a statement with an eclectic mix of materials. Place a patterned patio rug on a stone surface, for example, to achieve a luxurious look.

2. Select a set of dining furniture that fits your area and suits your taste. Experiment with shapes and colors. Consider an oval glass-topped table and ergonomic chairs, or a rattan cube sectional ensemble in warm earth tones. Customize with plush seat cushions and throw pillows. Serve cocktails from a patio bar and appetizers from a rolling cart.
4. “Dining al fresco is part of the lifestyle in the lakes area,” said Chip Erwin, bartender at Sleepy Owl Supper Club in Syracuse. “The atmosphere is relaxed.” Indeed, the waterscape lends a calming ambience to the al fresco dinner. Personal touches, too, add mellow vibes. Place a water feature within earshot of the table, or position a garden sculpture on the patio. Hang a piece of dreamy outdoor canvas art. And set the mood with music. Chill to André Gagnon’s “Comme au premier jour,” Kevin Kern’s “Remembering the Light,” and Yiruma’s “Sunset Bird.”
5. Bring the fine china and glassware outdoors to elevate the dining experience. Brighten the table with cloth linens in summery colors and patterns. Arrange seasonal wildflowers in a favorite vase. Or, take the unconventional route and use different
6. Showcase a festival of colors on the table. Begin with cold beet soup, rainbow orzo salad, and pineapple fruit salad. Present a relish tray with garden vegetables, pink hummus, smoked gouda, and green kiwi. For the entree, serve grilled salmon with asparagus and sweet potatoes. Keep dessert simple and bright with fresh fruit, strawberry trifle, or lemon bars.
3. An outdoor chandelier above the dining area oozes elegance. But a globe pendant or hanging lantern also radiates sophistication. Install sconces or LED strips for ambient light. For a casual appearance, string bulbs over the table, and border the patio with tiki torches.
7. A refreshing pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc complements the cheese and salad course a classic pinot noir pairs beautifully with grilled salmon. Pour chilled riesling or moscato with dessert. Of course, personal taste prevails. Any wine that dazzles the palate is the perfect choice.
Later, when moonbeams caress the sleepy lake and starlight freckles the sky, indulge in Port wine and Irish coffee as you relish warm conversations.

A COASTAL KITCHEN Renovation+Nautical Flair
This Irish Lake home, now a lovely blend of nautical themes with midcentury modern style, was purchased in July 2017 as a second home. After one summer at the lake home, its owners were hooked. Hooked on the home, their vision for what it could become, and of course, hooked on living at Irish Lake.
The primary home in Milford was sold, the owners settled in at the lake, and they’ve never looked back.
Meet Mark + Lee Baumgartner, and welcome to their newly renovated nautical kitchen.
by Mark Baumgartner
After sifting through thousands of web pages on home remodels, kitchen designs, flooring, and more, we knew the kitchen would be primarily white. As our house is a walkout basement type of home, the natural light is limited, so white was the right choice.
The island - the key was to paint it Animation Blue, a Pittsburg paint. Our cabinet builder also painted the inside of the coffee cup cabinet. Obviously, blue was our theme color.
The Bicycle Glass pendant light over the high-top is recycled glass—in blue, of course!
The MOEN faucet is their upper-end product with ‘motion sense wave’ activation. It’s very nice when your hands are sticky!
The dishwasher, microwave, and refrigerator are from the KitchenAid Anniversary package.
This range is a commercial version that we chose as we could select this bold color; we wanted it to be different. Instead of a blue painted lake home with a yellow front door, we have a blue and white kitchen with an oven’s yellow front door!
While we did gather helpful advice from suppliers, Lee and I devised much of the design ourselves. It was a process, for sure. So often home renovation shows on TV show demolition work completed with a hefty sledgehammer and strong swing. Instead, we reclaimed everything we could, including the oak trim. It was a meticulous project, and with the commodity shortage of 2021, it was not a quick process.
And so the process of brainstorm, trial, and research continued for every detail until the final result—this gorgeous nautical kitchen—was achieved. Pull up a barstool, and enjoy a tour of our custom made-for-us-at-the-lake kitchen.
Although our lake home had (and still has) many projects, the first to tackle was this kitchen. We transformed it into a nautical theme. And, we love the final result!

Dan Holderman at Keystone GraniteWerks was a big help with the Quartz counters, including the backsplash. This is where we wanted to be a bit different and not go with the common, modern subway tile. It was a little pricey, but the counters and the backsplash are seamless!
The Kraus fireclay sink is as modern as it gets as this is really a workstation. The grooves in the top allow for all kinds of additions, like a cutting board, colander, and drying rack.
Calloway Construction did the demo, some wiring, plumbing, and trim work.

Jennifer at J Lane flooring was a Godsend in our flooring search. As soon as she saw our quartz counter sample, she went to work finding the floor we have now. The porcelain floor tile, imported from Spain and laid in 1/3 stagger with 1/8 grout lines, made this a nice touch.
