KOSCIUSKO A DUAL ART DESTINATION

With two juried fairs in Kosciusko County each summer, artists, art aficionados, art lovers and visitors can double their enjoyment of unusual works from creative hands.
Village Art Fair
To fully appreciate the quality of the fairs and their exhibitions, visitors should understand the term “juried” art fair. Nick Hauck, managing director at The Village at Winona, home to The Village Art Fair, explained the word’s application.

“A juried art fair means a jury selects artists invited to showcase their work,” he said. “We have five jurors who are artists, in the art world or have knowledge of the arts. Our jury considers work submitted by artists in each media, judging and selecting the best artists.”
A juried show apprises artists of a reasonable expectation their art will sell, over time attracting better and more interesting artists to Kosciusko County for a show.

“Associating with higherend artists and art shows reinforces the idea of Kosciusko as a place that values art and the artists who create it. This, to me, is a
net positive for the reputation of our county and our residents,” Hauck said. In a setting a work of art in itself, visitors enjoy a picturesque backdrop for the perusal of creative works. The Village at Winona, situated on the shores of Winona Lake, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The former summer retreat now offers unique retail and service shops and a variety of restaurants and eateries.
The Village Art Fair will be June 6 and 7, 2026. Media accepted for the show include clay, digital art, drawing, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, painting, photography, wood, printmaking and sculpture.
Wawasee Fine Arts Festival
Mark Knecht, president of ChautauquaWawasee, host of the Wawasee Fine Arts Festival, echoes the importance of the shows. “One of our goals is to make our region an artists’ destination,” he said.
Karen Kroemer, vice president and marketing team leader for the organization, sees that happening. The Wawasee Fine Arts Festival at Oakwood Resort is going into its twelfth year in 2026.
Again, art intersects with history in an arresting setting. “Attendees know it is a beautiful and peaceful location, with no rush or noise to interfere with a relaxing walk through the Oakwood retreat to interact with the artists and their work,” she said. “Kosciusko County has a wide range of talented artists, and our festival
also attracts artists from Indianapolis, Michigan and Ohio.”
Additionally, Chautauqua-Wawasee has drawn artists through a collaboration with Northern Indiana Plein Air Artists (NIPAA). In 2024 and 2025, a plein air paint-out demonstration and competition attracted around 20 artists from northern Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin, who competed and sold their paintings at the festival. In partnership with NIPAA, ChautauquaWawasee also hosts leading Indiana artists who instruct a 3-day Plein Air Workshop the week after the festival. Pottery artist Kim Marcadis shared an experience which led to a unique relationship with her buyer. At one of her first shows, a customer fell in love with her birdbaths. In search of a replacement for her own cracked bowl, the woman needed a much larger one to rest on the original copper base.
“After some lengthy discussion and a visit to my studio, I made a custom piece that would fit into her base. She and her friend are now lifelong customers who are very supportive of my work. Several customers come back for more pieces each year.”
The story spotlights the show’s positive impact. “Having loyal customers validates your work and makes the challenges worth it,” Marcadis said. “There’s no better feeling than knowing people appreciate your creativity, and I always look forward to seeing them again.”
The 2026 Wawasee Fine Arts Festival is May 23 on the Oakwood event center grounds. Oil and water painting, pottery, jewelry, stained glass, wood furniture and wood accents, fabric art, photography and multimedia artworks will be exhibited.

SEE YOU IN THE ROUND
Wagon Wheel provides a stage for Kosciusko learners
Anyone yearning to experience performing on stage first-hand can explore that dream in Kosciusko County through the Wagon Wheel Conservatory, led by Outreach and Education Director Kira Lace Hawkins.
While many know of the professional Wagon Wheel Theatre productions in Warsaw, they may be less familiar with the conservatory, the educational branch of the Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts. The conservatory offers an array of performing arts programs for all ages and skill levels, providing a high-quality theatrical education to the

community. “It nurtures performers of all ages and fosters within them a love for the arts,” Hawkins said. Throughout the year, the conservatory offers two six-week sessions of classes and weeklong workshops culminating in Showcase performances.
A wide range of disciplines including acting, dance, improvisation, and musical theater satisfies those with a hunger for the stage. Students from second grade through adults can enroll in classes and workshops designed to meet each student at their skill level and take them one step further, from beginners to those with experience.
“Musical theater and our ‘triple threat’ studio classes are particularly popular, as they train students in the essential components of musical theater: acting, singing and dancing,” Hawkins said. “These classes are tailored to different age groups and incorporate a variety of styles, from golden age through modern musical theater, hip-hop and street-style dancing, all skills required of modern Broadway shows.”
Wagon Wheel Junior, another ‘spoke of the wheel’ at Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts, casts young regional
actors ages nine-18 in professionalquality musicals, giving them invaluable experience in a short, intensive rehearsal period. “These productions are created with young audiences in mind, offering a chance for students to perform in a supportive, professional environment,” she said. Similarly, Wagon Wheel Community Theater gives adults the opportunity to participate in professionally produced theatrical productions. Individuals of all skill and experience levels are welcomed.
“The Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts is committed to making its programs accessible, offering scholarships to ensure every student has the opportunity to experience theater education, regardless of financial situation,” Hawkins said.
A commitment to inclusiveness and community enrichment, combined with a dedicated team of theater professionals, makes the Wagon Wheel Center for the Arts a vital hub for artistic development in northern Indiana. “Wagon Wheel Conservatory provides a platform for lifelong learning and helps individuals build confidence, communication skills and a deeper appreciation for the performing arts,” Hawkins said.

ACCESSIBLE TRAILS
Heritage Trail
The Heritage Trail, part of the Lake City Greenway, is a nearly 2-mile paved path that winds through a beautiful, wooded section of Winona Lake. Connecting The Village at Winona to Limitless Park, the beach, & K21 Splash Pad, before passing through a natural setting, running along Cherry Creek, finally coming to an end in the Southtown neighborhood, the trail encompasses everything Winona Lake. It also features artwork that interprets the attributes of Winona Lake’s history and heritage. The trail is perfect
for those looking for an accessible adventure where they can connect with nature and enjoy public art.
The Old Chinworth Bridge Trail
Known for its two historic bridges, The Old Chinworth Bridge Trail passes over the Tippecanoe River. The stunning, red, iron bridge dates back to 1897 and is on the National Register of Historic Places, providing visitors to this accessible, paved trail with not only a picturesque start to their journey, but also a glimpse back in time. Part of the Lake City Greenway, the trailhead is home to a picnic shelter and canoe/kayak launch into the Tippecanoe River.

Pisgah Marsh includes grassland, marsh, lake, and upland habitats creating a space that is ecologically sensitive, geologically significant, and biologically diverse in this virtually untouched natural space.

The trail system helps to connect the Syracuse community and make it accessible to visitors of all abilities.
DISC: THE OTHER GOLF
We’ve all seen people in parks throwing what looks like Frisbees toward a chain basket resembling a basketball net. Contrary to first impressions, it’s not a silly mish-mash of sports. It’s disc golf, a real sport with real skills and a whole lot of real fun.

Disc golf plays a lot like regular golf –each throw counts toward the total you get when you land the disc in the basket. When a player lands in “the circle,” a 32-foot area around the basket, they are putting.
It has its own terminology -- “full flight,” where the disc flies far, in a big S shape; “parked,” where it lands so close to the basket the player can drop it in; “run,” trying to get in the basket by taking risks; “laying up,” or playing it safe; and “back of the bus,” being last in the tee order.
But lest you think showing up with a regular Frisbee for a run at the sport will work, Alaister McFarren, who, along with Andy Phipps, owns Circle Disc Golf, can set you straight on everything you’ll need.
“You can get started with as little as one disc, although I recommend three - a putter, a mid range and a driver. You can also get a full bag right from the get-go, depending on how serious you are about playing,” McFarren said.
For less than a single round of traditional golf and a cart rental, you can get a starter set of three discs and play at almost any course in the state for free, McFarren said. “If a disc golf course does charge, it’s minimal.”
He recommends joining the Kosciusko Disc Golf group on Facebook to connect for casual rounds or local leagues/ tournaments. “It's a very welcoming group that's all about getting new players into the sport,” he said.
Steve Huffman of Pedals & Paddles in North Webster outlined the equipment’s engineering. “The discs each have special aerodynamic designs, especially the edges, which determine how far and fast they fly,” he said. “Other designs can control whether the disc tends to ‘fade’ (turn left or right) toward the end of its flight.”
But the end game in any sport should be enjoyment. “Disc golf is a very unique sport,” said Trevor Kempton. “The first

time you see it or play it, it looks funny and feels silly. But the first time you get a good throw and watch the flight of the disc dance across the air is the moment you get hooked.”
It’s not just fun – it’s good for you. “It's more than a sport to the people who enjoy it. It's a super healthy and friendly outdoor activity with infinite room for individual growth,” Trevor said. “In a world of screens and sitting on your butt, disc golf has kept me physically and most importantly, mentally healthy. A round a day keeps depression away!”
Here’s where to play: North Webster Elementary; The Lodge in Syracuse; Lucerne Park; Grace College; Harrison Elementary; and Perimeter 6 in Leesburg. A course in Pierceton will open soon.

SHOPPING ON MAIN STREET

Nothing beats shopping a Main Street store. The down-home atmosphere lends a slice-of-warm-apple-pie feeling to a shopping excursion that says if you’re not already friends with the proprietor, you will be soon.
Absolutely Apparel & Gifts, Syracuse
Pia Thystrup knows a town’s heart beats at its center, which is why she located downtown. “Everybody should have things to do in their downtown,” she said.
Shop owners offer a heart-felt welcome that brings people to town and benefits everyone. “We send customers each other’s way,” she said. She spends time locating something for everybody. “I have half apparel and half gifts, and in summer a lot of lakethemed items. I shop a lot of different shows to find special things,” she said. Friendships naturally blossom. “I love the contact with returning customers, because you get to know people. If they’re seasonal, I look forward to their return. They become your friends, and you are part of each other’s lives.”

Pilcher’s Shoes, North Webster
Bob Pilcher purchased the Palace of Sports Museum to house Pilcher’s Shoes in 1990, after his father, Doug, founded the downtown shoe store in 1947. Today, every pair purchased earns a walk down the halls of family history –and service.
“We actually fit feet the way my father did for 30 years before I started,” Bob said. “Every day, customers with or without foot issues arrive, and we patiently meet their needs. We specialize in helping the hard-to-fit with rarely-stocked sizes.”
Although they ship to customers near and far, in-store customers provide 90 percent of sales. “This brings in people who would never visit. Everyone knows without working together we won’t have a town, so we shop locally whenever we can.”

Male Fashions, Warsaw
Tim Hamann has been at Warsaw’s center for 33 years with Male Fashions.
With the vibe decidedly quiet decades ago, he’s enjoyed being part of downtown’s growth and redevelopment. Transformed to an international culture center due to a booming orthopedics industry, Warsaw now enjoys a lively downtown scene.
“There is a lot more happening,” Hamann said. “The Chamber and Main Street Warsaw are really investing, and there are more retail stores here now. It is alive and growing.”
Building a vital downtown is a communal effort. “We are a community working together on the same goals. I try to treat all customers like my friends, and many of them have become just that. Good friends.”

Kelsea Designs, Pierceton
Kelsea DeGaetano found a perfect storefront downtown in 2014.
Now a Pierceton Chamber member, she says shoppers enjoy downtown because of involved community and business members. “Store owners direct customers to neighboring shops, making sure they find every shop,” she said. “I feel it’s a testament to the experience we offer. Shoppers can expect enjoyable interactions.”
Business friends working together serves everyone, said DeGaetano. “The Chamber works hard to create events, keep businesses connected and give visitors a good experience.”
Small businesses make communities shine. “A full and prosperous downtown with businesses in historic buildings provides a beautiful base. After that, events and community activities provide a great place to live and visit.”

Sue’s Creations, North Webster
At Sue’s Creations, you’ll know what’s happening in town, because Sue and Steve Ward design the windows of their florist shop around it.
It’s just one example of how business owners showcase the town where they live, love and work. With 42 years downtown, the Wards are experts on what makes a downtown shopping excursion special, and happily advise new business people.
Each store offers a unique experience. “Everyone creates an environment that makes customers want to see what’s new and exciting,” Sue said.
As to quality, seeing is believing. “With online shopping, you don’t see or feel the quality of the item until it arrives. Local shopping also offers unique items that can’t be found everywhere else.”
Shop K-County

Pete & Freddy’s Pages Aplenty, Mentone
A dream created a fairy tale ending for Mentone young entrepreneurs Maddie Anweiler and her sister Elyza, when they opened their downtown bookstore in 2009.
“I am a firm believer that small towns are destinations and worthy of being sought out for the little adventures we all seek in life,” Maddie said.
She is proud of her downtown business in Mentone, where the world’s largest cement egg pays homage to a thriving egg production history. “I'm happy to see new businesses along Main Street. They see our town’s uniqueness, and can't help but want to be a part of this buzzing hub of egg enthusiasts.”
Customers recognize her authenticity. “I operate with the idea that customers should feel safe, seen and loved. At every shop, you are served by the owner. The face you see making your food or coffee or recommending where to visit is curating your experience and working to make their own dream come true. Your money supports that.”

REST EASILY —
KOSCIUSKO WELCOMES FURRY FAMILY MEMBERS
Whether your dream stay is a historic retreat, national hotel or favorite campground, you are assured of an open-arms, open-heart reception for your pet in Kosciusko County.

Hoffman Lake Campground
Pet-friendliness has been a family tradition at Warsaw-area Hoffman Lake Campground for three generations, since her grandparents founded it, said owner Stacie Anderson.
“A lot of our visiting families have pets,” she said. “They are considered a part of their families, so why not allow them?”
Dogs seem to revel in the attention showered upon them by children at the campground, creating a big, happy family of constant movement and activity. Pets complete the circle of love and enhance the experience of the stay. “Families want them to come along on their trips,” Anderson said.
Hampton Inn by Hilton
A love of dogs and an appreciation of her guests’ needs guides General Manager Kathy Ray to do all she can for pets’ comfort. “It's important the guest feels comfortable and secure, and most have the pets for their comfort,” she said. “We interact and enjoy making them feel at home.”
Knowing what to expect in a new place enhances pets’ sense of security, she said. “We have special outside areas for dogs’ essential needs, and owners have a special room door hanger to alert staff to the dog inside, minimizing alarm to pets and promoting employee safety and security.”
Pets have access to all areas of the inn
except the breakfast buffet space. However, guests with service animals may take them into the food service area.
Oakwood Resort, Syracuse
Including dogs in her circle of hospitality at Oakwood Resort on Lake Wawasee strengthens connection, creates comfort and reflects inclusivity, said Stacey James, general manager.
“Hospitality isn’t just about food and lodging - it’s about creating an environment where everyone, including beloved animals, feels safe and cared for,” James said. “Many people relax more when their dogs are welcomed, as they don’t have to worry about leaving them behind or whether they’re an inconvenience. Recognizing and accommodating them helps our guests feel more at ease and valued. It says, ‘We see what matters to you, and it matters to us, too.’”
Dogs relax, too, when they find a jar of treats at the front desk, walking trails and waste bags for relief and exploration and the freedom to eat with their families on the restaurant patio. Water bowls are provided.
Wide-open spaces and lake access create relaxation and shared moments for pets and their families. “With gardens, lawns, lakeside areas and walking paths, pets have places to walk, sniff, play and enjoy new sights and smells,” James said. “Being on the lake gives opportunities for more than just walking – dogs can splash and observe waterfowl.”
The quiet, scenic nature of the historic resort lets owners unwind while pets rest or roam nearby, not feeling confined or stressed by traffic and noise.

BE AWARE TOUR WITH CARE

WCONSERVATION MEANS LEAVING NO TRACE
hen touring this summer, other than an aura of delight, leave no trace of your visit behind. With conservation of major concern in natural areas across the nation, we can all do our parts to wisely steward the natural resources of beautiful Kosciusko County.
The Lilly Center for Lakes & Streams at Grace College in Winona Lake conducts research and educates residents to make our lakes and streams clean, healthy, safe, and beautiful. Here are some practical, water-friendly tips from Assistant Director of Marketing, Rusty Martinez.
• When boating, look for at least 10 feet of water before beginning activities that create a wake. Wakes in shallow water stir up the lakebed, releasing nutrients like phosphorus into the water. These nutrients promote excess weed and algae growth – inhibiting recreation!
• Speaking of nutrients, here are a few more ways to keep nutrients out of the lake. Dispose of trash in designated receptacles, use phosphorus-free fertilizer (or no fertilizer), compost organic waste, and dispose of lawn clippings and leaves rather than sweeping them into storm drains.
• To minimize nutrients contributed by Canada geese waste, create native landscaping along property edges to discourage their gathering.
• Dry your boat and remove any attached aquatic animals or plants after leaving the lake to reduce the spread of invasives like zebra mussels and Eurasian watermilfoil.
• Fish and other aquatic animals are important markers of the lakes’
health. Each species contributes to the ecosystem to keep it balanced and healthy. Follow all DNR guidelines when fishing or interacting with wildlife.
• Sign up for notifications for the presence of microcystin, a toxin produced by blue-green algae, at lakes.grace.edu/research/ bluegreen-algae/. The Lilly Center tests for microcystin in 16 Kosciusko County lakes every summer.
• To conserve land areas, the U.S. Geological Survey, the nation’s largest water, Earth, and biological science and civilian mapping agency, offers the following information:
• When camping, use only dead and fallen wood which can be broken by hand, rather than cutting down trees for firewood.
• Choose small campsites in sloped areas more than 200 feet from water and concentrate activity on durable surfaces like rock or areas that lack plant cover. Large campsites can cause more water runoff of soil and pollutants into lakes and creeks.
• When hiking, stay on the path rather than venturing off trails, trampling and removing protective vegetation and organic materials, which compacts soils and increases water runoff and erosion. Soil loss is the most significant and long-lasting environmental impact.
• Don’t feed the animals. Although it may seem a kindness, the practice is harmful to wildlife, which can suffer nutritionally, become dependent on unreliable food sources, and vulnerable to predators, dogs, and vehicle accidents.
“Kosciusko County has so much to offer visitors and hometown tourists,” said Dr. Nate Bosch, Creighton Brothers endowed director of the Lilly Center. “There’s something for everyone. Caring for the lakes is essential to the wellbeing of our community and to the ecosystem’s lakes support. In fact, our lakes contribute over $422 million dollars annually to the local economy.”

VERTICAL COLLABORATION: Kosciusko County named 2025 Community of the Year
County-wide efforts led to Kosciusko County’s selection as Indiana Chamber of Commerce Community of the Year, say officials with the local Chamber of Commerce and Kosciusko Economic Development Corp. (KEDCO).
“Kosciusko County was selected largely because of the unique level of collaboration across all verticals throughout the county,” said KEDCO CEO, Peggy Friday. “The award belongs to everyone in Kosciusko County. It’s not the product of a single person or group, but a collaborative voice of vision and community pride.”
While so many share the credit, Friday is proud of how KEDCO’s efforts have paid off. “KEDCO has developed a presence in Kosciusko County and our state by creating a vision for economic development through networking and building relationships, showcasing the unique assets of the county at conferences and trade shows, and taking the story of Warsaw and Kosciusko County to national and international stages,” she said.
This yielded dividends in job creation, attracting companies like Slate Auto, a startup electric vehicle company, to occupy Warsaw’s former R.R. Donnelly facility. Its modular, affordable and customized electric pickup truck and SUV will be built there, after selection from 12 national sites. County residents will reap over 1,900 jobs, allowing them to work much closer to home. In addition, medical device manufacturer Autocam Medical announced plans to build a $70 million facility in Warsaw, bringing another 350 jobs to the area.

It all adds up as a great place for businesses, workers and residents, plaudits appreciated by the Indiana Chamber. With its concentration of medical device companies, Warsaw’s reputation as the Orthopedic Capital of the World® couples with the county’s natural lakes, agribusinesses and advanced manufacturing to create a magnet for skilled workers. Known as a welcoming community for professionals and families, Kosciusko offers new residents and workers strong housing options, thanks to community leadership.
Rob Parker, President and CEO of Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce, points to the county’s “All IN” initiative as a big reason for the award. Focused on advancing residents’ lives and livelihoods, it’s a rallying theme for all organizations, government and businesses. “It presents an overarching vision of the county through targeted investments, including the Silver Lake Community Center, Winona Avenue corridor and housing projects in downtown Warsaw,” he said.
With such validation, he believes the climate is ripe for continued growth and improvement. “The work in which community leaders have engaged over the past three years has been recognized by the state’s largest business organization,” he said. “We feel honored, humbled and proud, and know this is just the beginning. We believe this award will help us create even more opportunities for growth and development.”
Like Friday, he is quick to share the credit for the awardwinning growth. “The Chamber partners with all other organizations to make our community the best it can be,” he said. “KEDCO works tirelessly to bring in new industries and businesses. We benefit from leadership at the Statehouse, city, county and a plethora of supporting organizations like OrthoWorx, the Convention, Recreation and Visitor Commission, the County Visitor Bureau, Kosciusko County Community Foundation, K21 Health Foundation --the list could go on and on.
“We believe all of us make our community the best it can be, and we’re proud the Indiana Chamber of Commerce recognizes our efforts and initiatives.”
