An Altrusa Club member, Cox, along with the other members, opened The Beaman Home, a safe haven for victims of domestic violence. The Beaman Home is a nonprofit agency assisting victims of domestic abuse in Kosciusko, Marshall and Fulton counties. Cox was instrumental in The Beaman Home’s founding in 1985. A few years ago, a basic needs center opened for Beaman Home clients to shop for free. Due to the greater need for Beaman Home clients,

Mary Ann’s Place opened on Argonne Road in Warsaw. Last October, Mary Ann’s Place moved to its current location on Buffalo Street. Mary Ann’s Place serves both The Beaman Home clients and the community. The new location is about 1,000 square feet bigger than the previous location. “We simply were outgrowing it,” said Mary Ann’s Place Program Manager Martha Miller. The shop includes clothing for adults and children, jewelry, books, movies, toys and baby items, among other items. It provides items for Beaman Home clients in a variety of situations, explained Miller. “We offer anything needed to start over again,” said April Slone, interim executive direc-

tor. “We have household items, too, like sheets, blankets and kitchen items.” Proceeds from the thrift store directly support Beaman Home’s programming, said Slone. The number of clients the shop serves per week varies. “It just depends,” said Miller. “Clients get vouchers while going through the Beaman Home’s programs, such as meeting with their counselors. So it’s easy to get vouchers.” Beaman Home is a 32-bed facility. According to Slone, anywhere from 300 to 400 people are served by Beaman Home’s programs. Beaman Home also has a children’s program. The program promotes healing, safety, and resilience in the lives of

children, youth and adolescents who have experienced trauma through domestic violence. Slone said she hopes to grow the children’s program. The thrift store is one way of helping to do that. Slone said Beaman Home’s whole mission is to break the cycle of abuse. “We need to change that,” she said. Beaman Home also offers rapid re-housing program, an outreach program, mental health counseling and a personal empowerment program. Proceeds from the thrift store help support these programs. “The community has really supported us. We are very thankful for the community’s support,” said Slone. Slone added volunteers are always needed for both the

thrift store and Beaman Home. Mary Ann’s Place is located at 704 S. Buffalo St., Warsaw. To donate, people may bring in items during public store hours or by setting up an appointment to bring them in by calling (574) 253-2347. People may donate toiletries and furniture, which are only for clients to receive. Donations will be accepted starting Jan. 3. Donation drop off times are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Shopping hours for the public are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
