6WDII :ULWHU Once all of the wrapping paper has finished flying and the holiday ham leftovers are gone, sports fans from around the area can get back to consuming their favorite local teams.

A number of area schools will be hosting some kind of holiday tournament, or in some cases, traveling to one. Let’s unwrap where some of the Kosciusko County area teams will be competing during the holiday break.

Tuesday, Dec. 28 Warsaw and Lakeland Christian will each host two-day boys basketball

The Tigers will host teams from Pendleton Heights (11 a.m.) and South Bend Washington (8 p.m.) the 28th, then take on Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger (8 p.m.) the 29th in a revolving four-team carousel. LCA will conduct its annual LCA Classic boys and girls hoops tournaments. The games will be split, the boys playing exclusively at Grace College both the 28th and 29th and the girls at LCA the 28th and Grace the 29th. LCA’s boys will see action against North Judson and Clinton Christian in the opening round, the Lady Cougars matched with Clinton Christian and Purdue Polytechnic.

Placement games will all take place the 29th at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.

Wednesday, Dec. 29 One of the biggest, if not the brightest, wrestling tournaments in the Hoosier State begins the 29th in the Al S Sm Smith Classic hosted by Mishawaka High School.

wrestling world will have local entries from Wawasee, Warsaw and NorthWood all involved among more than two dozen programs. The individual tournament begins Wednesday morning, with final rounds set for Thursday under the solitary light of The Cave.

Wawasee will be the site of the oneday Wawasee Holiday Tourney. The Warriors drew Garrett in the first round (10 a.m.), opposite Rochester and Woodlan. Consolation round comes back at 6 p.m., with the winners of the two morning games coming back for a 7:30 p.m. final. There will also be JV games at Wawasee opposite the varsity, with Wawasee and Garrett also playing at 11:30 a.m. among the action.

The Banker’s Classic girls basketball tournament hosted by Northridge will include NorthWood, a tournament NorthWood is just two years removed as the champion. The two-day tourney will guarantee teams at least three games during two days, played at Northridge Middle School.

The Elkhart Gymnastics Invite is also set for that Wednesday, which features a handful of gymnastics teams looking to kick their seasons off right. Wawasee will be among the teams, hosted by the peren-

nial state power Lions of Elkhart.

Thursday, Dec. 30 Wawasee will also host a girls basketball shootout a day after the boys, landing a pair of games against Huntington North (10 a.m.) and Norwell (7:30 p.m.). Plymouth and Norwell meet in the other morning game, and Plymouth and Huntington North play in the night’s first contest. There will also be JV games going on at the same times in the morning.

Warsaw will host its Lady Tiger Tourney with morning and evening session games. Warsaw, Garrett, Kokomo and Chesterton are all confirmed to play. Action will have two JV games at 10 a.m., two varsity games at noon, then two JV games at 6 p.m. and two varsity games at 7:30 p.m.

Tippecanoe Valley will take its girls basketball program to West Noble for the Charger Holiday Shootout. The Lady Vikings are scheduled to play Lakeland at 11:45 a.m. and West Noble at 3 p.m. Concord will also play Lakeland and West Noble as part of the fourteam shootout.

If the hustle and bustle of the holidays isn’t your speed, there are single game opportunities as well. Columbia City will host boys basketball games against NorthWood the 28th and Tippecanoe Valley the 30th, Warsaw’s swim program will travel to LaPorte the 28th for a double dual, and Grace College’s nationally ranked men’s basketball team will host Cornerstone University Dec. 30 at the MOCC.

Performing Arts Center director sings its praises %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Warsaw Performing Arts Center is a busy place, especially during the holiday season. And since her appointment as the center’s director in June 2021, Grace Robison has been at the center of the action, whether she is designing choreography for “Freaky Friday” or cleaning up after a concert by the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra.

Robison was born and raised in Winona Lake. She is one of seven children, all of whom were encouraged in the arts by their parents, David and Sally Robison, who moved to Winona Lake to attend Grace Theological Seminary after a stint farming in Franklin, where Sally was a music teacher. Grace played piano, violin and sang in choir, eventually taking part in the select chorale class at Warsaw Community High School. “We still offer that class, which is wonderful,” she commented.

Growing up, Robison was also “wholeheartedly” involved in nearly every sport available to her, including tee-ball, basketball, swimming and volleyball.

In addition, Robison attended Debra Collier’s School of Dance, where she was later an instructor.

She also performed in numer-

ous stage productions with the Wagon Wheel Theater such as “Carousel,” “Hello, Dolly!”

“Ragtime” and more, including “Freaky Friday,” which the WCHS theater department will be staging in 2022 with Robison serving as choreographer.

She chose to focus on dance after graduating from WCHS in 2014, first at Virginia Commonwealth University and then at Butler University, where she also earned a degree in arts administration after transferring there in 2016. While living in Virginia, Robison was also a member of the Richmond Ballet Company.

Performing at the professional level has given Robison insights she imparts on her own students since she started teaching dance at WCHS in 2019. “I can step in knowing my own experience,” she noted. “It helps me connect.”

While she hopes to challenge her students, she is also careful not to expect professional level performances. “The choreography has to fit these students.”

Under Robison’s direction, PAC is “student-centered first,” and she is particularly excited about providing opportunities for them to interact both with other students of varying ages and with performing professionals.

When Dallas Brass gave a concert at PAC in November, both the middle school and

of other people … it’s a joint opportunity for the community to be engaged with the students’ opportunities and experiences.”

Robison is a true believer in the importance of the arts in building better communities.

“Arts in the community teaches empathy and inclusivity,” she said, and she is thankful for her new position. “I can better serve the students by providing the best education opportunities for them to realize their dreams and become better community members in general.”

On a personal note, Robison is also engaged to be married to Jeremy Hedington in April 2022.

Like her parents, Hedington is involved in agriculture.

Property acquisition marks milestone in redevelopment On Dec. 7, Kosciusko Economic Development Corporation and the City of Warsaw announced the acquisition of the former Owen’s grocery store site in downtown Warsaw. The effort was spearheaded by the city and is supported by the KEDCO Housing Initiative.

“Our team is working with local partners to encourage the development of additional workforce housing in proximity to leading employers,” said KEDCO CEO Alan Tio. “We are excited to support the city’s vision for reuse of this site as a catalytic project that will lead to additional opportunities throughout the county.”

KEDCO launched its housing initiative in response to a housing market potential study commissioned by the Kosciusko County Community Foundation and the Kosciusko County and City of Warsaw governments. The study forecasts a potential market for approximately 2,000 new residential units in Kosciusko County by 2024.

“The housing market study showed us the market potential exists to double the production of market-rate housing in our community,” said Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer, “We know from leading employers like Zimmer Biomet that access to housing is a workforce recruitment

and retention issue, as well.”

A proposal from Zimmer Biomet was selected by the Indiana Housing & Community Development Authority’s “anchor employer workforce housing demonstration program” in 2019 to establish a $2 million Workforce Housing Revolving Loan Fund. That fund has expanded with $2 million from KCCF’s “Working Together” initiative

that was made possible through a GIFT VII grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. in 2020.

“We know that Kosciusko County has a vibrant future and that we will be able to address current challenges around childcare, housing and workforce with local solutions,” said KCCF CEO Stephanie Overbey. “We look forward to seeing more projects like this one come

KEDCO is finalizing a development agreement with a regional development team for a mixed-use project at the former Owen’s site and will work through the winter with the development team, the City of Warsaw and other local partners to finalize plans for the project.

Good neighbors: Here is a recipe for candied sweet potatoes: 3 pounds sweet potatoes, 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/4 cup butter (cubed), 1/4 cup corn syrup. Optional: chopped walnuts and minced fresh thyme. Place the whole, unpeeled sweet potatoes in a Dutch oven and cover with water. Cover and bring to boil; simmer gently 30-45 minutes or until potatoes can be easily pierced with the tip of a sharp knife. While the potatoes cool, preheat oven to 375 degrees. When sweet potatoes are cool enough to handle, peel the potatoes and cut into wedges. Place in an ungreased 11 by 7-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with the brown sugar and cinnamon. Dot with butter; drizzle with corn syrup.

Bake uncovered 15-20 minutes or until bubbly, basting with the sauce occasionally.

Candied sweet potatoes: Bake the potatoes in the oven or microwave. My wife bakes them in the microwave and then puts them in a bowl with a towel over them to let them steam and cool. When cool enough to handle, she peels them and slices them into several pieces and places them in a 9 by 13-inch pan.

Use the size that works best for the amount you are making. She then puts a stick of butter, some corn syrup (she doesn’t measure) and some brown sugar in a pan and heats it on the stove until the butter is melted and it is all combined. She pours that over the sweet potatoes and then puts them in the oven (that day or she refrigerates them and cooks them the next day) at maybe 350 degrees. Sometimes she puts them in a different temp oven along with something else she is cooking. When the potatoes are hot and bubbly, she adds a generous amount of marshmallows (she prefers the miniature ones) and puts them back into the oven until the marshmallows are melted and slightly browned. They are good leftover still cold from the refrigerator.

Cornbread dressing Good neighbors: Here is a recipe for cornbread dressing: 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 cup cornmeal, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 large egg (lightly beaten), 2/3 cup water, 1/3 cup fat-free milk, 2 tablespoons canola oil.

Dressing: 10 slices bread (toasted and cubed), 3 cups chopped celery, 1 1/3 cups chopped onion, 1 teaspoon canola oil, 3 teaspoons reduced-sodium chicken bouillon granules or 1 1/2 vegetable bouillon cubes, 1/4 cup boiling water, 1 can (14 1/2 ounce) reducedsodium chicken broth or vegetable broth, 2 large eggs (lightly beaten), 2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes, 1 1/2 teaspoons rubbed sage, 1 teaspoon each poultry seasoning, dried basil and rosemary (crushed), 1/2 teaspoon each salt and dried thyme. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. For the cornbread, in a bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder and salt. In a small bowl, whisk egg, water, milk and oil. Stir into flour mixture just until blended. Transfer to a greased 8-inch square baking pan. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack. Crumble into a large bowl. Reduce oven to 350 degrees. Stir bread cubes into the cornbread crumbs. In a nonstick skillet, cook celery and onion in oil over medium-high heat until tender, about 6 minutes. Stir into cornbread mixture. In a large bowl, dissolve bouillon in 1/4 cup boiling water. Add broth, eggs and seasonings. Pour over the cornbread mixture; toss to coat. Transfer to a greased 13 by 9 by 2-inch baking dish. Cover; bake 20 minutes. Uncover and bake till lightly browned, 25-30 minutes.

Birds as weather forecasters

It’s December. An- OUTDOOR NOTES other year has passed, almost.

I’m thinking of previous years, long ago, years when I was a boy, when I lived in a small By Neil Case town in northwest Iowa. December was winter in Iowa. Real winter. A freezing temperature every day, often a below zero temperature.

There was no snow and ice.

My brother and I shoveled snow off driveways and sidewalks many mornings before school. We each had a sled and ice skates and skis. I wonder if it’s still like that in December in Iowa or has the weather changed there as much as it has in northern Indiana?

We’ve had snow in northern Indiana this winter, once, barely enough to cover the ground. The snow fell during the night and melted the next day.

It’s a gray sky morning. If I

was a boy in Iowa now I would expect snow to start falling at any time now. But I’m not in Iowa and I’m certainly not a boy. But I’m a bird watcher as I was when I was a boy. And I’ve been watching the birds, looking up from my computer screen frequently and out the window behind the computer screen. I’ve seen crows fly over.

I’ve seen two turkey vultures fly over. I never saw a turkey vulture in Iowa when I was a boy.

I’ve seen house sparrows which were called English sparrows when I was a boy. The sparrows have been flying back and forth between the trees in the yard and the bird feeder. There have been black-capped chickadees and a white-breasted nuthatch at the feeder outside my window this morning. Blackcapped chickadees and whitebreasted nuthatches came to my feeder in Iowa, in winter. I don’t remember seeing either at my feeder in summer.

I had just one bird feeder in Iowa. Dad helped me build it.

We hung it on a wire we strung between the house, outside a window of course, and a tree at

the edge of the driveway. I’ve seen several tufted titmice this morning and don’t remember ever seeing a titmouse in Iowa.

I’ve seen two dark-eyed outside my computer window this morning. Those were called slate-colored juncos when I was a boy. I saw them in Iowa occasionally, but only in winter. I see them every winter, now though I don’t see them in summer. Until a month or two ago, I saw two mourning doves at one of my feeders every day except when the weather was bad. Then we had three or four bad weather days in a row and I haven’t seen a mourning dove since.

I have seen cardinals this morning. I see cardinals, frequently two at the same time, at the feeders around my house now. I saw one cardinal in Iowa.

I say one because I never saw more than one at a time and I always saw that one in the same place, frequently the same tree.

Birds as weather forecasters?

Not for me. I’d trust Dad’s forecasts more than birds. From the looks of the sky, Dad once hurried us home from downtown to get the car in the garage

because he said it looked like there might soon be some hail.

We got home, got the car in the garage and there was hail. But it didn’t protect the car. The hail came with a tornado which blew the garage away and left the car

with a tree across its roof.

I continue to watch the birds, but not to have them predict the weather. For the weather I rely on radio and TV forecasters, although they are as inaccurate at times as the birds.

“Pooh Bear’s Mini Honey Buns” take refrigerated biscuits up a

notch, and would be suitable for either breakfast or dessert.

by Jessica Strand and Tammy Massman-Johnson takes you through the day with directions for such things as “Merry Macaroni” and “Sugarplum Lollies.”

Edible gifts and ideas for how to package them are included in this picture-filled volume. “Let’s Bake Christmas Treats” takes you through each recipe step by step. This would be helpful for a beginning baker. And finally, “The Christmas Cookbook,” a 2021 acquisition, adds tips and tricks to the fun holiday fare inside.

Becky Savage lost two children to prescription drug and alcohol abuse.

Now she works to ensure her sons’ legacy lives on by stopping abuse before it starts.

Savage, who serves as president of the 525 Foundation, was on hand at the Kosciusko County Jail Monday, Dec. 6, to dedicate a prescription drug takeback box. Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office obtained the Drop 2 Stop box via a grant from the foundation.

The box in the jail’s lobby replaces the 15-year-old one by the jail’s parking lot. It’s the 16th box the foundation has established across northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan.

Putting out the Drop 2 Stop boxes is one of several functions of the foundation, which Savage helped start following the deaths of her sons Jack and Nick Savage in 2015.

The organization’s name comes from the numbers 5 and 25 the boys had while playing high school hockey.

She said their legacy lives on through it.

“It took … a good year to really kind of regroup as a family and just kind of not really try to find our silver lining but try to figure out what (the boys) could still do to still make a difference in the lives of other people and this is one of their ways by us telling their stories, they’re still able to make a difference in the lives of other people whether they’re here physically or not,” she said.

“We have a book (“#OneChoice: How Ten Seconds Can Change Your Life”), it’s going to be released Dec. 16, which … actually they’re the authors of the book, telling their story and it’s just another form of outreach,” she added.

The foundation is also responsible for educating others about drug

abuse through various classes and its Wise-Up social media campaigns.

Savage cited figures 100,000 people died from different types of overdoses during the last year.

“We really just want people to do a little bit (in combatting drug abuse),” she said. “If everybody just did a little bit, we could take a really big bite out of that elephant.”

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Shane Bucher said the office collected about 1,000 pounds of prescription drugs through the current box during the past year.

That’s about 20-25 pounds a week.

Kosciusko County Sheriff Kyle Dukes noted the new box is safer for sheriff’s office employees to empty out. Unlike the previous one, there’s a liner inside to help hold the contents so there’s less physical handling.

“The reaching in and removing it just wasn’t a safe option, so that’s what we like about this box, too, and being inside with it being cold out in the winter and everything coming up, we hope people use it,” he said.

The box has rules posted on its front for what may and may not be placed in it. Items which may be put in it include prescriptions (schedule II-V controlled and noncontrolled substances), vitamins, prescription ointments, pet medications, prescription patches and over-the-counter medications.

Items not accepted include needles, inhalers, aerosol cans, thermometers, lotions or liquids and hydrogen peroxide.

“We’re excited about the new box,” said Dukes. “We’re taking a proactive stance to the opioid problem here in Kosciusko County and the previous drug box shows that there’s a need.”

Protect kids by steering clear of knock-off toys this holiday season (StatePoint) In the scramble to get your hands on the toys your children want this holiday season, experts warn that you should prioritize safety by sticking to age-appropriate toys and by avoiding counterfeit alternatives at all costs.

“Illicit sellers of counterfeit toys may dupe parents into thinking they’re buying the real thing, or entice them with lower prices or the promise of getting the ‘hot toy’ of the holiday season,” says Joan Lawrence, The Toy Association’s “Toy Safety Mom” and senior vice president of standards and regulatory affairs. “What’s scary is that these illegitimate sellers are actually peddling fake and unsafe products that oftentimes don’t comply with product safety laws. That’s why we always urge parents to shop from reputable brands and sellers whose toys have been tested for compliance with over 100 different safety standards and tests required by law.”

With the shipping crisis predicted to have widespread impacts on the availability of this holiday season’s most popular toys, counterfeits are likely to be even more enticing. And new research conducted by OnePoll on behalf of The Toy Association

suggests that consumers are not always as vigilant as they should be, with 65% of parents saying they would purchase knock-off/ counterfeit toys if they couldn’t get their hands on the original item and 63% indicating they would buy counterfeits if they were cheaper. Indeed one in 10 parents are not even aware that counterfeit toys can be dangerous for kids to play with.

3. If a product’s reviews are negative, or if there aren’t many, it’s a clue the product could be a fake.

Dr. William Remington will retain his position as Kosciusko County Public Health Officer for another four-year term.

Following months of controversy surrounding Remington’s reappointment, Kosciusko County Commissioners voted on the matter at their regular meeting Tuesday, Dec. 7.

Remington, who has served as the county health officer %(67 )25 /$67 ³ 6DQWD DQG 0UV &ODXV URGH DWRS D ÀUH WUXFN GXULQJ WKH SDUDGH IRU 0LUDFOHV DW 0DLQ continuously since 1994, had 0DUNHW 6WUHHWV LQ 1DSSDQHH 6DWXUGD\ HYHQLQJ 'HF 3KRWR E\ 7LP $VKOH\ initially been recommended for reappointment during the October Kosciusko County Board of Health meeting; however, the commissioners have the final say.

Last month, commissioners approved 2022 board appointments and department head appointments but withheld recommendation for appointment of the public health officer position, citing a desire to obtain further input in an effort to make an informed decision.

This delay in recommendation came after more than a dozen people spoke out about Remington’s potential reappointment at the commissioners Nov. 9 meeting, most in opposition.

At that time, Jodi Cox, Warsaw, presented commissioners a letter objecting to the reappointment of Remington, along with a petition containing nearly 600 6($621$/ 781(6 ³ 1RUWK:RRG 0LGGOH 6FKRRO &KRLU 6HOHFW 6LQJHUV SHUIRUPHG ÀYH &KULVWPDV VRQJV signatures.

“I have served with Dr. Remington in our weekly meetings we have, as well as the press conferences. I really feel as though he’s been a steady hand at the wheel through this last 18-20 months … .”

Groninger motioned for approval of the health board’s recommendation of Remington’s reappointment.

“Cary, I agree with everything you said as far as … to this point,” Commissioner Brad Jackson said.

Jackson added he has no problem at all with actions Remington has taken to this point but said there are a few issues in

which the two are not on the same page, pertaining to COVID matters.

“He’s a great guy,” Jackson said of Remington. “I like him a lot. He and I have had a lot of conversations over a period of time.”

Jackson said he is in agreement Remington has done a great job but because of the different views the two have on certain issues, he did not feel comfortable seconding the motion.

Commissioners President Bob Conley seconded Groninger’s motion, saying he has also had numerous conversations with Remington, appreciates Remington’s steadiness and thinks Remington “has done an exemplary job of keeping us in line.”

The vote was 2-1 in favor of Remington’s reappointment, with only Jackson voting in opposition.

Commissioners then voted on two county health board appointments. During the Kosciusko County Board of Health meeting in October, Larry Coplen and Dr. Brian Reichenbach were recommended for reappointment to serve another term.

The recommendation for reappointment of Coplen, who represents the public on the board, was approved. Commissioners then voted to have Dr. Gregory Haase fill the physician representative board appointment, formerly held by Reichenbach.

Haase will take office Jan. 1, 2022.

In another matter, commissioners approved two rezoning requests during Tuesday’s meeting. Angie Shaw petitioned to rezone a 5.71 acre tract of property from agricultural to agricultural II on the south side of CR 300N, west of CR 350W in Prairie Township.

The second rezoning request relates to Elkhart County Gravel, 11.3 acres on the west side of CR 200W at the intersection with CR 300N in Prairie Township. Only a portion of the 11.3 acres will actually be rezoned.

Elkhart County Gravel wants a permanent asphalt mixing plant on the property. A temporary one is operating under the approval of the Kosciusko County Board of Zoning Appeals.

In another matter, Matt Sandy, assistant planning director for Kosciusko County, gave a brief update on the Forward Kosciusko County comprehensive plan. He said a public comprehensive plan update will likely be available in late winter or early spring.

Sandy also noted countywide online GEO permit fees will go into effect Jan. 1.

In other news: • A public safety ordinance presented by County Attorney Ed Ormsby relating to the purchase and programming of the new communications system was approved.

• Kosciusko Economic Development Corporation CEO Alan Tio was given approval for reallocation of funds to be used for a MedTech Accelerator Studio Project, contingent on county council’s approval.

The next regular meeting will be 9 a.m. Dec. 14.

This event is an opportunity to give back to the community and raise funds for a non-profit organization within the county.

This year funds were raised for KBOR’s own children’s charities such as Boots for Scholars, BackTo-School Backpacks and three scholarships to graduating high school seniors throughout the county. At the end of the evening, the silent and live auctions raised approximately $5,398, with an additional $900 raised through the purchase of reserved tables.

The evening is also a time to recognize the Realtor and Associate of the Year.

Julie Hall, Patton Hall Real Estate, Warsaw, was presented the 2021 Realtor of the Year. During the introduction of Hall, Angie Jarrett, 2020 Realtor of the Year, listed the most important thing about the recipient — coffee, obsession and lifelong search for the perfect chocolate chip cookie and watching “The Young and The Restless,” a daily activity that started more than 40 years ago with her grandmother.

Hall grew up in Winona Lake and attended Jefferson Elementary, graduating from Warsaw High School. She graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington,

Joe D. Bradley, 68, Warsaw, passed away Monday, Dec. 6, 2021, at Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw.

The son of Joe and Beth (Hale) Bradley, Joe was born May 25, 1953, in Magoffin County, Ky. Joe Bradley was a 1971 graduate of Manchester High School and went on to spend 21 years as -2( ' a final inspector at DePuy Synthes. He was excited %5$'/(< to retire this coming January or May. On May 25, 1991, Joe married Kelly Retz. He, along with his wife, attended the Christ Covenant Church in Warsaw.

Joe was passionate about being a grandpa as well as being a Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed grilling at family cookouts and spending quality time with the ones he loved most, as well as spending time at the golf course. Joe was a cowboy at heart and enjoyed reading and watching westerns. He also had a knack for gardening and growing beautiful flowers.

County OKs $1.9 COVID money for emergency radios %\ '$1 63$/',1* 6WDII :ULWHU Federal COVID relief money will be used to cover nearly all of the costs associated with new emergency radios throughout Kosciusko County.

The county has already used some COVID money for the communications project, but the new funding will provide assistance to all parts of the county.

As a result, 25 fire and police departments as well as the county coroner and county emergency management office will share in $1,945,832 of the American Relief Plan approved

by Congress at the urging of President Joe Biden.

Milford Fire Department will receive $47,808.01; Milford Police Department, $19,272; North Webster Police Department, $11,712.80; Tippecanoe Township Fire Territory, $114,675.59; and Turkey Creek Fire Territory, $181,166.06. Syracuse Police Department had purchased new radios last year from a JAG grant.

Fire departments in the county will receive $1,179,113.34. Police departments in the county, county highway department, county emergency management and county coroner will receive a total of $221,425.83.

In a joint meeting Friday, Dec. 3, the county commissioners and county council unanimously approved a recommendation from a county committee charged with determining how to use American Relief Plan money.

In all, the county is expected to receive about $15 million during two years from ARP. The move means fire departments across the county will not have to expend money on the new radios, which are needed as the county works to upgrade its communication system and eliminate numerous dead spots they have had to work around for decades.

County councilwoman Sue Ann Mitchell used the word monumental as she talked about how important this issue is for all emergency responders.

“Nobody knows what the feeling is to be on your hands and knees in an accident with a handheld radio that you can’t get anybody to answer you back,” said Mitchell.

The individual amounts for different agencies ranges from $9,162 headed to Mentone Police to $181,116 dedicated to Turkey Creek Fire Department. The sheriff’s department will receive $328,922. The highway department will receive $188,975.

Warsaw Police are in line for $83,124.

Mitchell said the emphasis on communications will benefit everyone.

“We’re touching every corner of the county with this,” Mitchell said.

“We’ve upgraded the dispatch center and so this should bring us up to speed and should help for years to come. We feel like this is probably the most impactful way to spend the money,” she said.

Many of the 10 elected officials spoke strongly in support of the plan.

Commissioner Brad Jackson said the overall change has been a “long time coming.”

Commissioner Cary Groninger said the new technology will provide communications between all departments and emergency services “that we’ve never had in our county.”

Groninger referenced the challenges of the pandemic.

“We really look at this as a way to salute emergency responders,” he said. “This is our way of saying thank you.”

The county learned in the past week or so emergency radios would qualify under ARP after advice was sought from an Indianapolis law firm.

Groninger said they are waiting on one more permit from the Federal Aviation Administration and they hope to begin construction after the first of the year.

Use of the future communications network will be phased in, possibly beginning as soon as next spring.

Kosciusko Connect connects first members to fiber Kosciusko Connect, a subsidiary of Kosciusko REMC, has officially connected the first home to its fiberto-the-home internet network.

“We have been looking forward to this day since we started construction in March,” said Kurt Carver, KREMC president and CEO. “Reliable, high-speed internet is crucial to success in today’s increasingly digital world. Today is an important milestone on our journey to ensure that everyone in our area has access to a great connection.”

This home installation is Kosciusko Connect’s first in zone 1 of its initial five-zone build out. Construction in other zones is still proceeding on schedule.

For now, the Kosciusko Connect customer service team is reaching out to pre-registered members to schedule service drops and home installations when service becomes

For those staying close to home this Christmas, Walmart is offering online shoppers on Walmart.com the opportunity to round up their orders to the nearest dollar and donate the extra amount to the local Salvation Army. Donations come back to the shopper’s ZIP code, which means

their own community benefits from the roundup.
