%\ -$60,1( 025(+($' 6WDII :ULWHU The annual Thanksgiving dinner with the Elks Lodge will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 25 at the American Legion, located at 301 N. Buffalo St. in Warsaw. There will be turkey, ham, mashed and sweet potatoes, stufﬁng, gravy, cranberries, rolls and pies available free of charge for anyone in the community. The Thanksgiving dinner is not limited to those who can join in the drive-thru. There is an option for delivery if unable to make it to the drivethru event. “Thanksgiving will once again be drive-thru and delivery only, no dine in because of COVID concerns,” Charlie Miller, the event organizer said. “They can call the Elks to ask to have a meal delivered. We like to have that all in advance so we know our numbers and know what we are looking at.”

Member of the Elks, Roger Hughes shared during last year’s drive-thru and delivery event they were able to reach a new record of meals served. “We served 720 meals last year and that was without having a dine in at all. That was strictly carry-out and deliveries,” Hughes said. The Thanksgiving dinner was created with the goal to help those in the community and has for the last 30 years. “It’s to provide a service to the people in need. There’s a lot of people in the community that are 60, 70 years old and their kids are gone. It’s just them. It’s really expensive to make a proper Thanksgiving meal for two people and there’s a lot of food wasted. We don’t get just needy people,” Miller said. “There’s a lot of need in Warsaw for something like this.” This event is made possible by the many businesses and individuals who donate to the Elks and this

Tom Otto from Middleville, Mich., donates the turkeys every year. Usually between 30 to 50. We give the extra to Our Father’s House,” Miller said. ”Zimmer Biomet donates, Paragon, Medtronic... I know Warsaw Engineering donates, theres a lot of small businesses that donate as well.” In addition, any and all proceeds donated during the Thanksgiving dinner goes to the Elks other event for children.

Salvation Army helps Hart help her community %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Kim Hart of Warsaw has been a Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary volunteer since the 1980s. Much of that time has been spent working on the organization’s popular fruit and nut sale, and 2021 is no exception. For Hart, volunteerism is a family tradition, and she credits her mother, Jenny Hart, with instilling her spirit of community involvement at an early age. “She taught me how to give back,” Hart recalled. And for more than 30 years, Salvation Army has been her vehicle for giving back to the community. When was growing up, the Harts would also adopt a family around Christmas, taking part in the Angel Tree program also overseen by Salvation Army. “It was one of the things we always did at Christmas time,” said Hart. Hart’s mother was also her 4-H leader, and Hart spent several years in 4-H involved in foods and sewing projects. In 1985, Hart earned her realtors license and has been assisting in the buying and selling of homes in and around the Warsaw area ever since. She works with Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group. The women’s auxiliary fruit

and nut sale has been a successful fundraiser for Salvation Army for roughly 50 years, and Hart has been involved in nearly every aspect. The organization earns between $25,000 and $30,000 annually from the sale, all of which stays in Kosciusko County, where it supports the food pantry and other Salvation Army causes. “All proﬁt from the auxiliary sale stays local,” she emphasized. “It’s not just one week out of the year … This has become almost a year round project,” she observed. Some of that time is spent brainstorming different avenues for selling. In the past, Hart has sold nuts at farmers markets, First Friday events and other locales. There is also an online store at www.sawarsawnut.org. According to Hart, most of the work begins in August, and she assists with obtaining pricing and order forms from the company providing the nuts, as well as facilitating presales to members. “We try to keep our prices low,” she noted, and the large volume sold every year helps them achieve this. By Oct. 1, the orders are in and distribution begins. Hart also helps with arranging the deliveries, which come by truck from Illinois. In the past, volunteers had to unload

the nuts one box at a time, but these days forklifts haul them into the Home and Family Arts Building at Kosciusko County Fairgrounds, where Hart and others spend hours cutting boxes and ﬁlling orders. “I’ve been cutting boxes and moving bags all day,” Hart exclaimed Wednesday, Nov. 10. That day, Creighton Brothers, which picks up and delivers the nuts at no cost, dropped off 5 tons of nuts, all of which was moved and sorted by Hart and her colleagues, who were composed of volunteers from Kosciusko County and also Indianapolis, Demotte and Dayton. “There’s a lot of fellowship in doing this,” said Hart, who encouraged anyone looking to volunteer to look into Salvation Army, which, like most organizations is in need of assistance. “It’s a great way to help the community.”

Donors will be entered into a drawing for $100 and winners will be drawn monthly, and both the customer and that customer’s butcher shop will win. Hunters donating a whole deer will be entered into a drawing for a Henry Big Boy 44 Mag Riﬂe. Donations may be made through any of Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry’s participating Indiana meat processors. North Webster Chamber annual tree lighting and festivities %\ -$60,1( 025(+($' 6WDII :ULWHU North Webster-Tippecanoe Township Chamber of Commerce is having its annual tree lighting ceremony and events from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, throughout North Webster. The tree lighting will take place at 6:15 p.m. in front of Pilcher’s Shoes located at 127 S. Main St. Starting at 5:15 p.m. Leigh-Ann and Chris Oesch will be singing in front of the tree, at 5:30 p.m. North Webster Elementary students will start caroling and at 5:45 p.m. Cap’n Bob will be singing. In addition, businesses will have activities, food, drinks and discounts during the event. Cox said she is calling for the resignation of Remington because of the way he has handled the COVID response. She asked commissioners not to reappoint Remington and instead find a doctor “who better represents our community’s values and respects the freedoms that Americans for generations have fought to protect.” “We’re all on the same page. … So what needs to be looked into is to talk more with Dr. Remington, investigate more and find out where he really is because I also don’t want to just have a mob mentality where we just lynch a person and not accomplish anything,” Jackson said. No decision was made regarding his reappointment, but one is expected by the end of the year. In another matter, County Surveyor Mike Kissinger, on behalf of the county commissioners, county offices and residents of Kosciusko County, congratulated county Geo-

Others questioned a possible “conﬂict of interest” due to the Warsaw Community Schools superintendent being a voting member of the county board of health as well as another health board member, who is married to a member of the school board. Kosciusko County Health Administrator Bob Weaver spoke in defense of Remington, telling those in attendance Remington has never issued a mandate regarding wearing masks in school. Commissioner Brad Jackson cautioned against personal attacks, even in circumstances involving differing views, and advocated for unity. “It’s scary, we’ve got vaxxers and no vaxxers, maskers and no maskers … we need to get together and take our country back,” Jackson said. “We’re not going to get it by shooting our own people.”

More than a dozen people spoke out about the potential reappointment of Kosciusko County Health Officer Dr. William Remington at the Kosciusko County Commissioners meeting Nov. 9 — most in opposition. Jodi Cox of Warsaw presented commissioners with a letter objecting to the reappointment of Remington, along with a petition containing nearly 600 signatures. Cox’s concerns relate to a recent school board meeting concerning mask mandates as well as a “hot mic moment” last month in which a private conversation between Remington and other officials, in part about the mask mandate, was live streamed prior to a COVID-19 press conference at city hall. The Kosciusko County Board of Health, last month, recommended Remington’s reappointment to serve another four-year term. His current term ends Dec. 31, 2021. Remington has served as the county health officer continuously since 1994. Due to a new law, the county commissioners now have the final say regarding the public health officer’s reappointment. In her letter, Cox said the recent school board meeting regarding mask mandates was “abhorring” and she was “disgusted at the en-

titled empowerment every single one of the school board members displayed in front of pleading parents to not let the school go against their personal beliefs on what is best for their child.” She has started looking into what the jobs of school board members, health ofﬁcials and county commissioners entail and began listening to the weekly county COVID press conferences. “This is where I learned that Dr. Remington stated that he was proud of Biden’s vaccine mandates and was disappointed in (Governor Eric) Holcomb’s refusal to enforce the mandate for Indiana,” Cox said. “To quote Remington exactly, he refers to us as ‘noncompliant parents who need to get out of the way’ so that our ‘children will fall in line.’” Several people expressed concern about potential health issues that could arise from children being forced to wear a mask

Park Ave., Warsaw. It will be Nov. 20-21 and Dec. 4-5. The open house is to raise funds for our local building projects. The public will ﬁnd one-of-a-kind professional quality, holiday decor, created by local artisans and priced to suit every budget. A hands-on craft workshop will be held each Sunday afternoon Nov. 21 and Dec. 5. Reservations may be made by calling (574) 453-7353. There will be a small fee for the materials that are used during the workshop. Our local Habitat, an afﬁliate of Habit for Hu-

manity International, will use the funds raised to assist local residents pursue homeownership. Candidates for new homes complete a comprehensive application process. They receive information and training related to budgeting, maintenance, and even assist with home construction where possible. The ReSale Outlet operates primarily with volunteers. The outlet offers a wide variety of gently used, reasonably priced, furniture, appliances, cabinets, and building supplies, generously donated by the community. At the ReSale store, we often receive assistance from our “homeowner” volunteers, as well as after they are in their new homes. They are paying it forward in the best spirit of Habitat. Lions Club feather party in Cromwell Cromwell-Kimmell Lions Club will be hosting its annual feather party Friday, Nov. 19, at the Cromwell Community Center. The feather party will be from 6-9 p.m. Food will be served starting at 6 p.m. with bingo starting at 6:30 p.m. The Lions will be serving hot dogs, sloppy joes, chips and drinks. There will also be a bake sale to get some goodies before Thanksgiving. All proceeds will go toward West Noble High School scholarships and other community needs.

Salvation Army launches Virtual Red Kettle Campaign The Salvation Army is ofﬁcially launching peer-to-peer and crowdfunding campaigns across Indiana that will invite the public to take an active role in supporting the organization. The Virtual Red Kettle Campaign has a goal of raising $250,000 online through the platforms. The communities, including Warsaw, are each launching peer-to-peer campaigns. This allows supporters to create their

own virtual red kettle with a personal fundraising goal. The campaigns run through the end of the year. Residents, businesses, churches, and other organizations in these Indiana communities are encouraged to support The Salvation Army’s local fundraising efforts this holiday season by participating in the Virtual Red Kettle Campaign. There are many ways to get involved, whether as an individu-

al “virtual bell ringer” or as part of a fundraising team. Individuals: Visit the local virtual red kettle page and create a virtual kettle with a fundraising goal of one’s choice, whether that’s $50 or $5,000. Opossum, safe to handle An opossum is a fat, OUTDOOR NOTES furry animal about the size of a pet cat. The fur on a possum’s body is gray, on its face and head are white. Its legs are By Neil Case short, its tail is long and hairless and it has ﬁve toes on each foot. More often than not an opossum is called just possum. A female possum has a pouch and young possums are born in the female’s pouch. A female has one, sometimes two broods in a year and 12, even 13 or 14 young in a brood. But a female doesn’t have that many teats. Newborn opossums, as many as can, get a hold on a teat and don’t let go until they are old enough and big enough to leave the pouch and begin eating solid food. It seems cruel but young that don’t get a hold on a teat starve. When they are old enough for solid food, young opossums let go of their mother, climb outside her body and up onto their mothers back. She curls her tail up over them and they curl their tails around her tail. A female possum with three, four, ﬁve young on her back, her tail curled up over them, their tails curled around their mothers is a sight to behold, a sight I’ve only seen a few times. Possums are animals of the night. They take shelter during the day in deserted dens of other animals, in the shelter of a tall tree, often high up in the tree, 60, 70, 80 feet up, until after dark. They also rest during the day in cavities beneath farm outbuildings, in hollow trees or logs and in culverts. They eat almost any-

thing, fruits, vegetables, rats and mice and other small animals, eggs, insects and carrion. The possum I’m familiar with, the one I write about, is often called the Virginia possum. Its range is eastern and central U.S., from the most northern states of the U.S., south to the Gulf of Mexico and west to the Rocky Mountains. There are other species of opossum in Central and South America, one called the mouse opossum and one called the foureyed opossum. The four-eyed does not have four eyes, but it has a white spot which looks like an eye over each real eye. A few days ago, I had a close encounter with a possum. One of our dogs caught a possum and I tried to take it away from the dog. When I took hold of the possum, which I did by its tail, it didn’t struggle. I picked it up by its tail. It still didn’t struggle. I tried to throw the possum over our yard fence, away from the dog, but whenever I lifted the possum off the ground, the dog grabbed it and hung on. The possum and dog together were more than I could lift, though the possum still didn’t struggle. I finally managed to jerk the possum off the ground, whirl it away from the dog and throw it over the fence. The possum didn’t struggle during any of my wrestling, even when I held it up by its tail. The dog did. The possum played dead, played possum, which an opossum often does when threatened. I’ve not had many encounters with possums. I’ve not seen many possums. Active only at night, and then slow-moving and silent, not moving at all when they fell threatened, they are difficult animals to spot. A raccoon is about the same size as an opossum and much easier to see, to find. It’s also safe to catch, to pick up. It just goes limp in your hands.

Farming community comes together in time of need %\ 3+2(%( %$1.6 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU A Warsaw farmer is getting some help with his harvest this week thanks to a group of other farmers. Farming community comes together in a time of need for a man who recently lost his wife. Robert Frantz recently lost his wife, Ruth Ann, 82, to COVID after a month of being in the hospital. The farmers decided to take a break from their own harvests to help Frantz. The farmers are Ed Boggs, Mark Montel, Sam Brown, and Mike Wertenberger. “You see this out west all the time,” said Ed’s wife, Tammy Boggs. Three combines and four semi trucks were in the ﬁeld Monday, Nov. 8. They harvested ﬁelds of soybeans on Frantz’s property. Ed organized the event after Frantz’s wife died Oct. 19. Ed said he’s known the Frantz family for many years and just wanted to help.

“I’ve known the family forever,” Ed said. “We are just doing what God wants us to do. It feels good to help.” Frantz said he appreciates all the help he has been given. He and his wife were married for 63 years. The Frantz farm is a Hoosier Homestead Farm, which means it has been owned by the same family for more than 100 years. The award is given by Indiana State Department of Agriculture. The Frantz farm dates back to 1918, and in 2020, it received the Centennial Award for 100 years. To be named a Hoosier Homestead, a farm must be kept in the same family for at least 100 consecutive years. The farm must consist of more than 20 acres or produce more than $1,000 in agricultural products per year. “I really appreciate it,” Frantz said. “It feels good.” Chase Hand was another farmer helping out as was Thomas Boggs, who said he too felt the urge to help Frantz.
