New director preparing to take

Warsaw Community Public Library in new directions

LIBRARY OF THINGS — Warsaw Community Public Library’s new director, Heather Barron, who started Monday, Oct. 2, browses the Library of Things. Here, she finds a bin full of cookie cutters. This section of the library features all sorts of useful items that anyone can check out, ranging from tools to cake pans to board games.

BROWSING THE EMPORIUM— Kim and Anthony Degatano skim through a book while shopping in the Story Emporium, a volunteer-run used bookstore open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m at the library. Text and Photos By LILLI DWYER Staff Writer The Warsaw Community Public Library has officially welcomed a new director to its staff. Heather Barron started in her position Monday, Oct. 2, after the previous director, Anne Zydek, retired from a 42-year career. Barron has previously served as director for North Webster, Plymouth and Bourbon’s public libraries over the course of her career. When describing the everyday life of a library director, Barron explained, “There’s no routine. Any issues that come up, you’re trying to problem solve as they come up. You’re making sure that there is a vision for the library going forward and crafting that, making sure we have the policies that we need in place.” WCPL already has a strategic plan set in place for 2021 to 2025. Its three main points are Reimagine Physical Space, Expand Virtual Presence and Cultivate Community Engagement. According to Barron, staff have identified a need for more study space and meeting rooms. In the next few years, they will be trying to put out surveys to get a feel

for what else the public wants from the library’s physical space. In the virtual presence category, Barron would like to see the library working on its marketing and producing more online content that would help introduce the staff to the community. Community engagement is the third and perhaps most important point. WCPL often does this through outreach activities, such as partnering with schools and the Beaman Home for story times. WCPL also engages with the community through the many events and programs they offer. Part of Barron’s job will be consulting with staff about the new programming they’d like to see in the future, what trends they’re seeing among their patrons and what will serve the community. According to community outreach assistant Duane Herendeen, WCPL will be looking to create more events for kids after school and during school breaks in 2024. “Everybody from toddlers all the way up to seniors, we have programs for people,” said Barron. Just in the month of October, WCPL held a virtual reality gaming event for teens, a traditional English tea for adults, and a Family Fall Fest

for all ages. “It’s really culture and just giving people a chance to experience something different,” Barron said of events like the English tea. Another lesser-known resource Barron mentioned is the Library of Things, which has a wide variety of useful items that anyone can check out: tools, cake pans, a ukulele, a metal detector, lawn and board games, a cash box, even three tiaras that Barron said are often checked out during prom season. “Just like with books and DVDs, you don’t have to purchase them, you can come and borrow it for the time you need it,” she explained. Through WCPL services like Homebound, those who cannot visit the library can also have materials delivered and picked up by staff. New offerings like these represent a shift that Barron has noticed in libraries as of late. “We didn’t have programming that I remember when I was younger,” she remarked. “I think libraries started out, and for a very long time, were keepers of materials. The library was the place where you came to be quiet, to study. ... I think now we’re in this whole new age where the library is this common space for people to gather, to

Engagement is the key word. I don’t think that was necessarily there before.” She went on to say that there is a need for everyone in a community to be able to access information, and with the resources they have, “libraries are the equalizer.” Upcoming WCPL events include, but are not limited to, Euchre at

the Library 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14 and Teen Adapt a Painting 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16. People can also visit the Story Emporium used bookstore, which is open at the library 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Warsaw resident starts organization that helps eliminate unwanted kitten litters By LAURIE LECHLITNER Staff Writer “We’re here for the cats,” stated Nicole Wallick, Warsaw. “The cats are the victims in a struggle for survival. Some of them are half starved and injured. They need help. Our goal is to trap, neuter or spay, vaccinate and return. That way a cat has a fighting chance. There are too many unwanted strays out there.” Wallick is the president of Trap, Neuter, Return an organization that helps cats survive and thrive. “I’ve always loved animals. Cats have always been some of my favorites. I guess that’s because I had so many when I was growing up.” When Wallick got Callie, an indoor/outdoor calico cat that was not spayed, she saw firsthand the problems that cropped up. “She had litters of kittens. We finally ended up spaying her and finding homes for the kittens, although they weren’t fixed.”

About seven years ago, Wallick volunteered as a foster for cats at New Hope. “There’s nothing so tragic as a young kitten dying in my arms because of another person’s irresponsibility. I believe it was then that I wanted to do something about the problem of overpopulation of unwanted cats.” After doing research on the TNR program, Wallick was hooked. “Trap Neuter Return is very much a mainstreamed, scientifically based route to reducing overpopulation. According to Best Friends Network, the roots of TNR began in Great Britain during the 1950s and later in Denmark in the 1970s. At some point during that time, TNVR began to take hold in the U.S. as well, but it didn’t become part of the public discourse until the 1990s.” Three years ago, Wallick started a non-profit organization for her TNR program. “It’s intimidating to start any new business that requires a board of directors. I wanted to make sure it was done right. So, I enlisted the help of a friend who is well versed in the process.” In late 2019, Wallick made plans to do the paperwork. Then she did some research to find out if Kosciusko County had a need for the program. “The results of my poll were a resounding yes!” Then she began a Go Fund

Me account. “We raised $1,000 to buy about 15 traps.” Her 501(c)3 non-profit designation only took two weeks to get approved. “That was during the COVID pandemic. Being approved so quickly is unheard of! When I got the news, I cried! I’d prayed for God’s will in all of this and truly believe He’s doing all of the work.” This is how the program works: “We hear there’s a spot where they are having trouble with stray cats or owned outdoor cats. Our volunteers deliver the traps and show the residents how to use them. Residents begin feeding the cats inside the traps. When the cats get acclimated to them, the zip ties are cut, and the cats are trapped. Then they are transported to the vet where they will be spayed or neutered at a reduced price.” The cats are then released back into their old stomping grounds. “They make good pets, and we no longer have to worry about unwanted litters.” Those having a cat problem may email KosciuskoTNR@ gmail.com. Wallick and her husband Michael have a son Ian at Purdue. Their daughter Jillian is an eighth-grade student at Edgewood. Wallick is also an addictions counselor.

Kosciusko REMC held its second annual EV Test Drive Experience on Saturday, Oct. 14. KREMC members were invited to test drive one of five electric vehicles and learn more about EV technology at no cost to them. Two Tesla Models 3s, a Ford Mustang Mach-E, and two Chevy Bolts were on hand for the event. Drivers pre-registered for a time slot and vehicle of their choice. The test drive route was a predetermined 10-minute excursion that provided a mix of highway and country travel. “We had an excellent turnout for this year’s event and are pleased to see it expand,” said Kurt Carver, KREMC president and CEO. “Attendees expressed their appreciation for the unique opportunity to test drive an EV outside of a salesrelated setting. As an electric cooperative, we are always striving to contribute valuable learning opportunities to our community.” KREMC employees and representatives from Wabash Valley Power Alliance and Kankakee Valley REMC were present to answer questions and share printed information with members. Jay County REMC also contributed to the success of the test drive event. As an added bonus, Armando’s Tacos food truck was on-site, and free meals were provided to co-op members who test drove an EV. Customer Engagement Specialist Haley Donahue rode along with KREMC members who chose to drive the Mustang. It was her second year helping with the EV Test Drive Experience. “I love being able to watch this event grow and to see how the community enjoys visiting our co-op to learn about innovations in electricity,” Donahue said. Cates, Rep. Snow Named 2023 Republican Man And Woman Of The Year By DEB PATTERSON Editor-In-Chief Kimberly Cates and District 22 State Rep. Craig Snow were announced as the 2023 Republican Man and Woman of the Year at the Kosciusko County Republican Hall of Fame dinner, Thursday, Nov. 2. The event was held at The Owl’s Nest. Mike Ragan, county chairman, gave the introductions of the Man and Woman of the Year. Regarding Cates, Ragan stated she is a great citizen and has been involved in Kosciusko County for many years. “She has served our community for several years and has done a wonderful job,” said Ragan. “She’s been a great friend to most of you, if not all. She is currently serving on the Kosciusko County Council.” Cates’s only comment was “There’s so many women who deserve this more than I, and I”m very appreciative and thank you.” His introduction of Snow was brief. Ragan only noting Snow has served Kosciusko County and Warsaw in many, many ways. Snow stated “I really haven’t done a whole lot yet. I’m still working on it. It has been a joy and honor to represent you all. … It’s not always easy. It’s been an enjoyable learning process …” Keynote speaker 3rd District Congressman Jim Banks and 2nd District Congressman Rudy Yakym could not be present for the evening, but spoke via Zoom from Washington D.C. Yakym remarked newly elected Speaker of the House Mike John-

son was a rock solid conservative, a Christian and “one of the most solidly fundamental conservative Christians in maybe a 100 years.” He stated last week the house passed a pro Israel resolution supporting Israel. “What Hamas has done on Oct 7 amounts to the worst atrocities against the Jewish nation we have seen since the Holocaust. The world has watched in horror and what they’ve done to Jews in the nation of Israel. The United States unequivocally stands with them. Hamas has been supported by Iran. Iran has done very well under the Joe Biden administration,” stated Yakym. Having his staff do some research, Yakym stated the very first year Biden was president, Iran’s GDP went up by 50%. “That’s because we allowed them to go around our oil embargo, our oil sanctions … Iran is taking that money and using it on terrorism on Israel. The nation of Israel absolutely has the right to defend themselves. I support them … whatever action they deem necessary to assure this never happens again.” Yakym touched on the anti-semitism occurring on college campuses. “Liberal college campuses have allowed anti-semitism to creep across the entirety of this nation and it has to stop. We are working on legislation to call that out and condemn it.” He also noted the House will have passed between 80-85% of the appropriation bills needed to fund government. However, he said Democrats in the Senate are “doing nothing. We need to send more conservative fighters to the Senate.”

Warsaw American Legion hosting special Veterans Day events Nov. 11 The American Legion Post 49 of Warsaw will be hosting a day of special events open to the public Saturday, Nov. 11, in honor of Veterans Day. At 10:45 a.m. the Legion will be holding a ceremony honoring all veterans, followed by a lunch of pulled pork, deviled eggs and oyster stew. In the evening, a steak dinner

will be available for $15 from 5-7 p.m. Afterward, everyone can enjoy karaoke. Veterans are encouraged to wear their uniforms, but it’s not required. Those attending must 18 years of age or older. This is a no-smoking event. The Legion is located at 301 N. Buffalo St., Warsaw.

With that, he introduced Banks. Banks stated he was sorry they could not be with the group in person and would rather be there than “stuck here in the swap. But this week we’re doing what you all pay us to do, to come to Washington, what you elect us to do, and represent you and fight for our conservative Hoosier values here on Capital Hill. He said he and Yakym were doing “everything we can to cut wasteful spending, secure our border and to hold Joe Biden and the most corrupt administration in American history accountable for what they are doing to our country. That’s saying a lot after the Clintons served in the White House.” He called Biden the most corrupt president ever to sleep in the White House and that it was his goal and hope “that we impeach Joe Biden before the end of this Congress to make sure no other president in the future of this great country ever thinks they can get away with what this president and his family have done to sell out our country in such a big way.” Serving his fourth and final term in the House, Banks, who is running for U.S. Senator, said Indiana is a conservative state and Indiana deserves a conservative fighter. “I’m so tired of go-along to get-along Republicans who go along with the Democrats, vote for more spending, vote to sell this country out …” Banks stated that would not happen on his watch. “I promise you that when you make me your next state senator, I’m going to fight for this country in a big way to move us forward, to get our country back on track, to put America first in a way you deserve your United States senator to fight for each and every day.” The group of Republicans also heard from Indiana Secretary o State Diego Morales and Indiana Treasurer Daniel Elliott along with 3rd District U.S. House candidates Grant Bucher, Jon Kenworthy, Tim Smith and Mike Felker.

REPUBLICAN MAN AND WOMAN OF THE YEAR — State Rep. Craig Snow, left, and Kimberly Cates were named the 2023 Man and Woman of the Year by the Kosciusko County Republican Party Thursday, Nov. 2.

Donations help Hoosier neighbors in need put turkeys on the table NAPPANEE ICON — The Dutch Maid was made famous by the Coppes Brothers and Zook when she started to appear in their advertisements and on the Nappanee Dutch Kitchenette. No one knows the origin of the Dutch Maid, but she appeared in many advertisements, including the Saturday Evening Post. This Dutch Maid would have appeared with a store display or in the showroom at the factory. She is made out of pressed cardboard with a wallpaper front. In 2021, the Evelyn Lehman Culp Heritage Collection at the Nappanee Center worked with Coppes Nappanee to create a one-of-a-kind case. This case is extra special since it is made with wood from the trees that had previously stood in front of the original Coppes Factory. Photo provided by the Nappanee Public Library.

IUSB and WaNee Community Schools sign partnership Students in WaNee Community Schools are now able to advance their college education while still in high school with the opportunity to earn an IU certificate. The school district signed a multi-year agreement with Indiana University South Bend to participate in Indiana College Core. The program allows high school students to earn college credit by taking a block of 30 credit hours of college-level courses. “Partnering with IUSB to offer the Indiana College Core at NorthWood High School is a leading-edge opportunity that sets us apart from schools in our area. It signifies our commitment to excellence and prepares our students for a successful future,” said Principal Weston Lambert. “We are excited NorthWood High School is the first school in our area to sign a long-term agreement to participate with IU South Bend and offer this program to its students through the 2025-26 school year,” said IU South Bend Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Jill Pearon. The NorthWood instructors

who will be teaching these courses are trained and certified by Indiana University and hold adjunct status with the university. By taking part in this program, the students will receive IU’s ICC certificate and the credits they have earned will transfer to IU South Bend or any Indiana public college or university. “We know education can open the door to opportunities for students. About 90 percent of students who complete Indiana College Core in high school go on to attend college and have more success while they’re on campus,” Pearon said. The program allows students to enter college with more opportunities to focus on their majorspecific coursework; offers them more flexibility in their schedule because they’ve completed many of the general education courses; and may allow them to add a major, minor or internship during their college career. “The College Core is helping introduce me to the college workload and how to manage my time and effort in a class with other peers,” said NorthWood Student Margaret Steiner.

“I am hoping to double major in college, and by taking these college courses I will be able to achieve this more easily. Instead of having to take an extra year, I will be able to complete my degrees in four years. I also just enjoy the topics of these classes,” said NorthWood Student Kathleen Cummings. For families, the program can be a cost savings. The students are earning a full year of general education credits during their time in high school. “Allowing me to save money and time by completing college level courses in high school is a big advantage. This will help me in my learning both now and later in my future,” said NorthWood Student Jace Davies. “It allows me to go to a college in Indiana with the general credits I need to be a sophomore. It is also important to me because it allows us to take college courses and pay less than we would have to for our freshman year of college,” said NorthWood Student Elissa Horner. Lambert said being the first school in the area to offer the ICC through a partnership with IU

BENEFITTING STUDENTS — IU South Bend Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Jill Pearon, left, and Wa-Nee Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Scot Croner sign the memorandum of understanding paperwork for the district and Indiana University South Bend to participate in the Indiana College Core program Monday, Oct. 30, on campus at IUSB. Photo by Michael Caterina. South Bend empowers students to access college-level courses, earn transferable credits, and explore a wider range of educational opportunities. “The collaboration between NorthWood High School and IUSB to introduce the Indiana College Core is a game-changer for our students and families.

It not only enhances their educational journey but also opens doors to higher education, scholarships, and career prospects. We are proud to offer this life changing experience to our community,” he said. The new agreement runs through the 2025-26 school year and is renewable.

State Teachers of the Year are selected among nominees after rigorous evaluation by the association selection committee. The awards are given in recognition of outstanding teaching performance and the ability to motivate today’s youth to participate in a lifetime of physical activity. Re-

cipients can now compete for the SHAPE America Midwest District Teacher of the Year awards, which would qualify them for the national awards. The Honor, Legacy and Leadership Award each recognizes an individual who is clearly outstanding in his/her profession with long and distinguished service to health, physical education, recreation, dance and/or allied areas. “On behalf of the INSHAPE Board, I am pleased to rec-

ognize these professionals for the work they do to help kids live their best life,” said INSHAPE President Cassie Brooks. “Quality health education, physical education and physical activity opportunities improve school performance and develop our students physically, socially, mentally and emotionally. INSHAPE is proud of these individuals for their service to our profession, their students and their communities.

Veterans Day is an opportunity to honor all who have served or are currently serving our country. For those who have served our country, it means freedom, sacrifice and honor. It is also meant to give thanks to those who served. Without Veterans Day many Americans would forget them and the sacrifices they and their families made.

‘the PAPER’ wants to take this opportunity to thank all who have served or are serving our country in war or peace. The photos you will see were submitted by family and friends to honor their veterans. Many expressed gratitude for taking the time to honor these men and women. The response to the request is appreciated. To all veterans, thank you for your service.

Winners announced in AWL Coloring Contest

By LAUREN ZEUGNER Editor The Kosciusko County’s Animal Welfare League “Fall Fest Coloring Contest” proved to be a huge success for its first year. The contest saw approximately 50 entries submitted by children in three age groups: 4-7, 7-9 and 10-12. Those who submitted entries used a variety of mediums to color their drawing, from pencil, colored pencil, crayon and magic marker and in some cases glitter glue. Judges had a difficult time selecting the winners due to the artistic license some children took in coloring the cat in the drawing. Along with the traditional black cat seen at Halloween, judges were impressed with the colorful depictions of cats such as those whose tails were a different color than their body, different coat textures were depicted as well as a nice representation of orange and calico cats. Winners in the 4-6 age group were: Madeline Miller, first place; Eleanor Huesmn, second place; and Konor Shilling, third place.

Echoes Of The Past serves the community despite the weather With Mother Nature being so temperamental this fall and forcing the cancellation of the Fall Festival, the Echoes of the Past club members were left saddened and perplexed at the same time. The club was disheartened to cancel the festival following all the rain that saturated the grounds but yet had their field full of pumpkins just waiting to find homes. Pumpkins are given away at the Fall Festival to each of the kids that visit and with the cancellation, the conundrum of what to do with the pumpkins surfaced. Club members met and cleared the patch on Tuesday, Oct. 17. One trailer load was delivered

to the Town of Claypool for residents to grab and enjoy. The second trailer load was donated to Combine Community Services. Sixty of the pumpkins went to help Cardinal Services clients compete in a pumpkin decorating contest. The rest of the trailer load blessed nearly 200 people through CCS. The pumpkins arrived just in time for a family art project. The club will be collecting toys through the month of November for their “Cram the Tram” event that benefits Toys for Tots. If you would like to help by donating a toy, donation boxes can be found at Splendor Boats 650 E. Winona Ave, Warsaw and 9526 SR 15, Silver Lake.
