This year’s Christmas Bucks promotion will run from Wednesday, Nov. 3, through Wednesday, Nov. 17. The Papers Inc. conducts the annual campaign as a way of giving back to the community during the holiday season. A host of merchants throughout Kosciusko County are participating

this year, offering entrants plenty of chances to try for any of 10 cashequivalent prizes. Entrants can cut out an entry form found elsewhere in this edition or pick up a form from any of the participating merchants. The process to enter the contest is simple. Merely complete the form with name, address, contact information and the store’s name and drop it in the designated festive Christmas Bucks box on site. Forms must be placed in the stores’ Christmas Bucks boxes no later than noon Friday, Nov. 19. Entrants must be 18 or older, but need not make a purchase to enter and need not be present to win.

Drawings will take place Monday, Nov. 22, at the main office of The Papers Inc. in Milford. A total of $3,000 will be given away in the promotion. The first place winner will receive $800 in Christmas Bucks, which can be spent just like cash at any of the businesses participating in the contest. The second place winner will get $500. Third, fourth and fifth places will each win $150 and places six through 10 are worth $50 apiece. Metzger tackles new challenges to make the world better for others %\ /$85(1 =(8*1(5 6WDII :ULWHU Mason Metzger of Warsaw is like most college seniors. He’s busy with ﬁnishing his course work and deciding what his next steps will be after graduation. Metzger will graduate from Indiana Wesleyan University in April 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in communication with an emphasis in organizational leadership. “I really enjoy the leadership part of my program. That’s where my heart is,” he said during a phone interview. Along with his studies, Metzger has been engaged in various accessibility projects during his time on campus. When he was 1-year-old, Metzger was diagnosed with spastic cerebral palsy, a neurological condition resulting in muscle stiffness and impaired mobility. He is classiﬁed as a person with quadriplegia and requires assistance with activities related to daily life. At IWU, Metzger has been engaged in various accessibility projects on campus. In January, he began serving on the Indiana Assistive Technology Act Project

Advisory Council at Easter Seals Crossroads. The goal of the INDATA Project is to educate communities on the importance of assistive technology and other topics that impact individuals with disabilities throughout Indiana. Metzger’s role is to advocate for people with disabilities and teach others about assistive technology. Since Metzger arrived on campus in fall 2018 through March 2020, he’s had nursing students provide his daily care. “That was really cool,” he said, explaining while the students gained practical experience they were also in his peer group and became his friends. “It developed some very strong friendships that I will carry with me forever,” he said. He also worked with the university to have wheelchair accessible seating in IWU’s two dining rooms. His biggest accessibility project was working with school ofﬁcials on modifying his dorm room. While the shower in his room met the Americans with Disability Act it was too small for his care giver to do hygiene care. So Metzger worked with the university’s accessibility and facility services

everyone,” he said. He choose IWU because the campus had a superior level of accessibility with every building on campus being wheel chair accessible. Not only does every building have an access button, but so did his dorm room. He especially liked the wellness center which also had machines that were wheelchair accessible. He enjoys working out and riding a specially designed bike when he has spare time. College has been a crazy journey for Metzger, who like many college students had to contend with COVID impacting his classes. He’s had to adapt to telecommuting to campus via Zoom. In addition to ﬁnishing his studies, Metzger is also working on writing a book and earning his driver’s license. His book, which he hopes to self-publish, has the working title “Specialized Challenges — A Journey Toward Contentment” and is based on the fact he doesn’t like the term “disabled.” “I’ve come to realize we all have specialized challenges and we can come along side each other and support one another,” he said. He’s also busy working on raising money to purchase a van which will be modiﬁed so he can drive with hand controls. Metzger has been working with Vocational Rehabilitation Services to see whether he would be a good candidate for driving. After going through a series of assessments, VRS determined he would be a good candidate to get his driver’s license. He plans on raising money for a van that can be converted to use hand controls and then start driving’s education sometime in the spring. How different the weather was then, particularly the winter. Strangely winter was colder and there was much more snow in winter when I was a boy. Yet now we are experiencing global warming. Strange as it seems, the winter was much more severe when I was a boy. Last winter we had the driveway plowed twice. When I was young, when my brother and I were old enough to be able, we cleared the snow off the driveway and sidewalk in winter with shovels and we had to do it many times. We cleared the neighbors’ sidewalks, too. And we got paid for it, 35 cents per sidewalk each time we cleared a sidewalk. I’m a lifelong bird watcher and observer of nature and the outdoors. Change is something I am seeing constantly.

Birds, to begin with the subject I began this article, specifically species of birds of North America, have declined in number by approximately one-third, according to estimates and actual counts. I can see the decline in many species of birds. Chimney swifts were one of the most common summer birds. I saw two chimney swifts all last summer. Meadowlarks were one of the most common birds of country fields in summer. I saw just two meadowlarks last summer. Nighthawks, Baltimore orioles, belted kingfishers, song and field sparrows, kestrels, red-tailed hawks, marsh hawks, flickers, phoebes, bluebirds, indigo buntings and both yellow-billed and black-billed cuckoos, brown thrashers and catbirds, have all declined. Red-headed woodpeckers have disappeared. Not all birds have declined. Most waterfowl have but Canada geese have increased. Sandhill cranes have increased. A pair of sandhills nested in our pasture last summer and raised two little ones. Cardinals and turkey vultures have increased and expanded their range north. There were no turkey vultures in northern Indiana when I moved to northern Indiana 30 years ago. Now they’re common, summer

I’m a lifelong bird OUTDOOR NOTES watcher I often tell people. And I am, lifelong being as long as I can remember. My parents weren’t, nor did I By Neil Case have any friends who were interested in birds. But my parents knew and told me the names of the common birds, common around where we lived. When I saw a bird Mother and Dad didn’t know, at the feeder or elsewhere, I’d tell Mother and she’d look at pictures with me until we found a picture and the name of the bird new to us. Dad helped me build a birdhouse and put it in a tree in our yard. Birds nested in our birdhouse. Appropriately our birdhouse was a wren house and the birds that nested in our birdhouse were house wrens. Dad also helped me build a bird feeder, string a wire from the house to a tree in our yard and hang the feeder on that wire. I liked seeing other animals, too, not just birds, squirrels, raccoons, opossums, deer, foxes, skunks. I learned, when I was quite young, though I liked to see a skunk, I didn’t want to get close to one. My dog and I learned that lesson together. Birds, mammals, wildflowers, trees and shrubs, birds’ nests, animal tracks, rocks and minerals, amphibians and reptiles, my interest in things outdoors has grown and for each of the subjects I just named I have a book called a field guide. I have a book named “A Field Guide to the Birds of Alaska,” another book named “A Field Guide to the Birds of Mexico.” I have more books for the identification of things outdoors

Food banks, pantries, and soup kitchens continue to work to protect the most vulnerable and underserved in communities during these uncertain times. Proper nutrition is vital to the growth and development of children and the health of all Hoosiers. That is why protein, an important component of every cell in the body and one of the most important nutrients for brain and body development, is so important. Shooting Sports Club continues its winning streak Grace Shooting Sports Club continued its winning streak during the Scholastic Clay Target Program Collegiate National Competition at the Cardinal Shooting Complex in Marengo, Ohio. The GSSC competed against teams representing colleges and universities from across the nation, participating in ﬁve different events: Trap, skeet, sporting clays,

bunker trap and ﬁve-stand. These events spanned four days, offering each participant the opportunity to shoot 800 targets. GSSC team took third place in its division in the bunker, Olympic-style trap event and the ﬁvestand competition. Additionally, several team members had personal best performances throughout the weekend. GSSC is a shotgun shooting

Originally a Syracuse resident, Ringler said he started this business and moved back to Syracuse after spending 13 years in Indianapolis working for various banks and investment ﬁrms. “Just got kind of fed up with the corporate way of doing business. So, I decided that I wanted to start

OBITUARIES Kenyon Lybarger Retired From Orthopedic Industry Kenyon “Ken” Lybarger, 68, North Manchester, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021, at Peabody Healthcare Center in North Manchester. The eldest of four children, Ken was born in Decatur April 13, 1953, to Lindy L. and Norma L. (Hamrick) Lybarger. Ken learned the value of hard work at a young .(1<21 age. He began working at Hiatt’s Grocery Store as a /<%$5*(5 meat cutter during his freshman year of high school. After graduating from Manchester High School in 1971, he attended IPFW for a year before entering the workforce. Ken worked at Peabody Seating Company for 13 years and BKB for three years before moving to the orthopedic industry, where he found his niche in quality control. He worked at various orthopedic companies in Warsaw before retiring in 2012. While working meant a lot to Ken, nothing compared to the love he had for his family. On June 5, 1976, Ken married the love of his life, Diana Lee Poston, in the North Manchester United Methodist Church. During their 45 years together, Ken and Diana shared many memorable times, but nothing was as special to them as their son. Although Ken worked many hours, he still found time for his family. In his free time, he enjoyed taking his family to the Indianapolis 500, Auburn Car Auction, camping trips with the Boy Scouts and many of the area festivals. Ken passed a few of his passions on to his son, Loren, such as his love for the Cincinnati Reds and classic cars. He also had a deep appreciation for astronomy, the outdoors, reading, photography and collecting baseball cards. He had a natural ability to strike up a conversation with anyone and talk about anything. Ken was a soft-spoken, kind-hearted, Christian man who was baptized into the United Methodist Church at an early age. In his later years, he attended the Congregational Christian Church in North Manchester. He was also a member of the Fort Wayne Astronomical Society. The loving memory of Ken Lybarger will be forever cherished by his parents, Lindy and Norma Lybarger, North Manchester; wife, Diana Lybarger, North Manchester; son, Loren (Mary (Sonne)) Lybarger, Fort Wayne; brothers, Todd (Amy) Lybarger, North Manchester, and Mark (Kelly) Lybarger, Warsaw; sister, Cindy (Bill) Ogden, Auburn; grandchildren, Kenyon M. and Jennifer I. Cynthia Ann (Frevert) Fry, 89, Syracuse, passed away peacefully Sept. 18, 2021, at The Laurels Nursing Home in Hudsonville, Mich. Cynthia was born in Goshen, July 20, 1932, to Ray and Eloise (Niccum) Frevert. She spent all but the last two years of her life in Syracuse. She was a member of the Syracuse High &<17+,$ $11 School Class of 1950, and from 1954-1978 was mar)5< ried to James E. (Jim) Fry (deceased). During her career, Cynthia worked as a clerk for her father’s Wawasee Lumber Company, and also served as the clerk/treasurer for the Town of Syracuse. Cynthia was employed as a buyer for Thornburg Drug Stores, and as a Travel Specialist at TravelMore in Goshen and then Warsaw Travel. She retired at age 81, after serving 10 years as the administrative assistant at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club. Cynthia was a beautiful woman inside and out, had a kind heart, and always put others first. She lived her life by examples of hard work, love, and caring. Her beauty, love, selflessness, and pride for her entire family will never be forgotten. A gathering to celebrate Cynthia’s life will be held from noon to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 6, at the Syracuse Community Center. Please come and join her family. Letter to the editor Farmers seeing results of their labor Dear Editor: The leaves are changing colors. Summer’s heat and humidity is giving way to cool autumn breezes. This is the best time for hog roasts, bon ﬁres and s’mores. This is a wonderful time of year, especially for farmers. It is when we get to see the results of our labor for the year. And we know how to grow corn and soybeans. Indiana is the fourth-largest producer of U.S. soybeans and the ﬁfthlargest producer of U.S. corn. We’ve accomplished this despite planting fewer acres than many of the other top-producing states on the list. Most of our corn and soybean crops are used to feed hogs, poultry, dairy cattle, beef cattle and other livestock on Hoosier farms. In addition to livestock feed, nearly half of the state’s corn is processed in one of the state’s 14 ethanol-production facilities, which gets burned as fuel in Hoosiers cars. Despite all of this consumption, we still need to move large

piles of soybeans and corn to new places. That’s where the Indiana Corn Marketing Council (our state’s corn checkoff) and the Indiana Soybean Alliance (our state’s soybean checkoff) add their expertise. The checkoffs are funded, invested and managed by Indiana farmers to assist them in making their crops more valuable. The No. 1 job of the checkoffs is to move the state’s corn and soybeans to export markets around the world. Organizations such as the U.S. Soybean Export Council, the U.S. Grains Council, the U.S. Meat Export Federation and the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council have ofﬁces in most of the countries around the world promoting our crops to end-users who need them. Cardinal Services hosts annual fundraiser Cardinal Services’ annual fundraiser, “A Cardinal Call,” marked its 16th year in October. ‘Smallest county fair in Indiana’ to benefit The Salvation Army admission to view the fair, but donations will be accepted for The Salvation Army of Kosciusko County; it’s celebrating its 100th anniversary. Sheriff’s office will buy five patrol vehicles %\ /$6&$ 5$1'(/6 6WDII :ULWHU Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office will be purchasing five new patrol vehicles from its 2022 budget. At the Kosciusko County Commissioners meeting Tuesday, Oct. 26, KCSO Chief Deputy Shane Bucher told commissioners KCSO plans to purchase all five vehicles locally, from two auto dealerships. Bucher recommended purchasing three vehicles at the cost of $35,440 each from Rice Ford and two of the same type of vehicle from Kerlin Motors for $35,474 each since the vehicles are identical and there was a difference of less than $40 between the two bids. Commissioners accepted the recommendation. Commissioners also authorized Bucher’s request to apply for the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant in the amount of $322,500 to be used for the purchase of new radios that would be more compatible with the new radio system being implemented by the county. The JAG program provides state and local units of government with funding for a range of programs, including law enforcement and technology improvements. In addition, Bucher received approval to apply for the 2022 CHIRP grant, which involves Operation Belt Up in the amount of $3,000; Program Click It to Live It for $30,000; and DUITF Operating While Intoxicated in the amount of $22,500. Jeff Strombeck’s petition to rezone 20 acres from agricultural to commercial along the north side

of CR 500N (Armstrong Road) near the intersection with SR 13 on the northwest corner in Tippecanoe Township was approved by commissioners. Attorney Steve Snyder, who represented Strombeck, said a potential purchaser of the property wants to put some type of retail business along Armstrong Road. The Ridenour family petitioned to have a NIPSCO gas line vacated on lot No. 7 in the Cripplegate Crossing subdivision in Plain Township near Oswego Lake. Area Planning Director Dan Richard said the Area Planning Commission voted in favor of the vacation. Snyder, representing Colin and Brooke Ridenour, said the property was recently purchased and the owner wants to be able to use all available space to build on a hillside. He said the owners of lots 5 and 6 are in favor of the petition.

Bikers Against Predators posting potential threats Editor’s Note: This is the ﬁrst of a two-part series. %\ -$60,1( 025(+($' 6WDII :ULWHU The Facebook page “Bikers Against Predators” was created in February 2021 after the leader “Boots” found out a “predator” was messaging his daughter. “I have a teenager and she had a phone,” Boots said. “Upon checking her device we had come across a conversation that was with her and an older man. He had threatened to rape her... We took this information to our local law enforcement and we were told we don’t know who’s on the other end, not a lot we could do. It sucks, but we really can’t do much about this.” After being discouraged by the answers, he decided to test how big an issue this was. He joined a few of the apps with a fake photo and saw why so many organizations exist to protect children against predators. “Within minutes I had guys messaging me and they didn’t mind my age. And I’m like, man is it really this bad and yeah. We’re close to 80 some individuals that we’ve caught since February,” Boots shared. Bikers Against Predators has ﬁve members, including Boots, who work to catch “predators.” Each member gets a “burner phone” (a phone not connected to them or any of their personal information) and down-

load apps such as Kik, MeetMe, Snapchat, Grinder, Instagram and a few more. Also, members have three rules they always follow while on the apps. “We don’t ever message anybody ﬁrst, number two is we don’t speak sexual ﬁrst and number three is we don’t set the meet,” Boots explained. Despite being an organization created and primarily focused in northern Indiana they have assisted with a case in Georgia, caught a man from Arkansas and helped lead to a conviction in Michigan. “There is really no perimeter. We try to stay in the northern Indiana area, but we kinda go wherever they are at,” Boots said. The organization does turn in everything they collect to the county the individual resides in. They do not do this line of work just for the charges. “If we did this for charges, it’s not worth it. We do this for awareness, to spread that awareness. For whatever reason it is very hard to prosecute these cases,” Boots shared. Boots has seen states and researched different countries that don’t question prosecuting individuals who sexually message minors. His frustration is with the laws and questioning why Indiana is so different. “For me, it’s why are we different? Why is it these other countries have these laws that will protect children, but we’re lax over here? Because, well,

Ultimately Boots is hoping change to happen with the laws currently in place for cases such as these. “I pray our laws throughout the country will change, that we’ll stop protecting these

guys,” Boots said. Kosciusko County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Hampton shared any and all information turned over by this group is reviewed by law enforcement and his ofﬁce. “My ofﬁce is reviewing the prosecutorial merit, if any, of cases submitted by Bikers
