New CCAC director always open to new ideas

Leadership changed hands at Warsaw’s City-County Athletic Complex, better known as the CCAC, in September 2021 when longtime executive director Karl Swihart turned over his keys and title to Mike Hagy.

Swihart had been the multi-use sports complex’s leader for around 16 years, affecting numerous changes and improvements to the nonprofit facility during his tenure.

Before coming to Warsaw, Hagy worked for the city of Kokomo’s parks and recreation department, running the adult softball leagues in his hometown. Prior to that, for 16 years he ran a pest control business. As Swihart was preparing his exit from the job, he reached out to Hagy to suggest he apply for the position.

“I had known Karl on a personal basis for 15 years,” said Hagy. “I’m also the National Softball Association Adult Slow Pitch assistant state director, so I run tournaments throughout the state. I formerly played and coached softball, so I had been to the CCAC a hundred times over the years before I even started here.

“Sports has always been my thing. Softball has been my life for 31 years. I’m in the Indiana NSA Hall of Fame. Last fall I was inducted into the NSA National Hall of Fame in Panama City, Fla., so I have tons of experience with sports.”

According to Hagy, the CCAC has multiple soccer baseball and softball fields that welcome numerous tournaments throughout the year. It also has an indoor facility that hosts pickleball, gymnastics, basketball, indoor soccer,

cornhole and even professional wrestling.

The CCAC recently joined the NFL flag football program for youth, which will begin next year. Hagy emphasized he’s willing to listen to anyone who has suggestions or new ideas to bring to the CCAC’s facilities.

“My daily role is trying to figure out how CCAC can become a community place. When I first came in, the people I talked to had the perception that CCAC was nothing more than a weekend facility for baseball and softball. I’m trying to change that perception. We do offer local soccer leagues, we rent out our fields and the indoor facility. We’re working every day to improve the facility and the park.”

Last fall, the CCAC held its first trick-or-treat event for the community, which will return at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29. This past spring, Hagy put together an Easter egg hunt for the kids, also something that will return. For both events, the CCAC partnered with other organizations and nonprofits in the community to sponsor the fun.

“Being in a nonprofit is really different for me,” Hagy said. “I’m used to funding. Here it’s all selfgenerated. I’m constantly writing grants. We have board members who help write grants to try to secure funding for certain projects and improvements. It’s a neverending battle searching and hunt-

ing down people who are willing to help.”

The CCAC does receive minimal funding from the city of Warsaw. They also receive funding from the Kosciusko County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Hagy said that from April through the end of August, the CCAC is responsible for about 70% of the innkeepers tax

raised in Kosciusko County, a portion of which is received through the quarterly KCCVB grant.

Hagy is one of two full-time employees of the CCAC, the other being Assistant Director Eric Lackey. It also employed a Grace College student full time during the summer, but who has returned to part-time status this fall.

Nappanee hosts a frighteningly fun night for Halloween

The town of Nappanee is hosting a frighteningly fun night for Halloween, Monday, Oct. 31.

American Legion will host trunk or treat from 5-6:30 p.m. at 201 E. Lincoln St.

The following activities will be held from 5-7 p.m. at Nappanee Elementary School, 755 E. Van Buren St. and the Boys and & Girls Club, 900 E. Centennial unless otherwise noted.

The Nappanee Public Library will conduct a Room on the Broom story walk at the school. Join library staff for a walk around the school as a Halloween story is read. Once completed, spin the wheel to win a prize.

The Nappanee Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a cute and creepy costume contest at the Boys & Girls Club. Categories include family, grades kindergarten through fifth and sixth through eighth. Sign up online to reserve a spot, as space is limited. The contest will start at 7:15 p.m.

For more information visit nappaneeparks.recdesk.com.

Ann Lash-Branson. During the session, students participated in a team activity that focused on developing a project plan and the importance of communication while working with a team.

The students also spent time reflecting on the positive leaders that have impacted their lives and thinking about the characteristics that made those individuals good leaders.

“Understanding Your Leadership Style” was a timely session topic for the KYLA class, as the student leaders continue to take on more responsibilities in the various activities they are involved in.

Additionally, during the October session, students were placed in their Project Proud groups for the upcoming year. KYLA members will be working together with fellow students who they

may not know well yet. Project Proud is part of the KYLA curriculum for students to develop and improve their leadership abilities through involvement in community service.

Each of the groups, which include a mix of students from different high schools, will be responsible for working together to complete a community service project and then present a summary of their project to the rest of the 2022-2023 KYLA class and leaders at the end of the year.

KYLA exists to provide a positive environment where aspiring high school aged youth can learn the basics of leadership and become informed, capable leaders who assume active roles in the growth of the community.

Goshen Physicians offers drive-thru flu shots

Goshen Physicians will be hosting drive-thru flu shot clinics this fall. These clinics are open to the community for ages 10 and older.

The influenza vaccine is free with most insurance plans. Cash, check and credit card will also be accepted. Self-pay cost is $40 for the low dose and $107 for the high dose.

No prior registration is necessary, but participants should bring a photo ID, insurance card and payment method. Parent/guardian signature is required for those under 18.

Drive-thru flu shot clinic schedule:

• 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 — Urgent Care Goshen Physicians, 2824 Elkhart Road, Goshen • 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 — Goshen Physicians | Parkway at 17, 851 Parkway Ave., Elkhart

Clinics will be held at Goshen Physicians offices, but they are open to anyone; being a current patient is not required. Also, dates and times are subject to change for inclement weather.

“With the fall influenza season fast approaching and COVID-19 protocols loosening, it’s opening the door for infections like the flu to spread more easily again,” said Dr. Dan Nafziger, Goshen Hospital chief medical officer and infectious

disease specialist.

Flu symptoms tend to be worse than a cold. The flu can lead to sinus and ear infections, pneumonia, bacterial infections or hospitalization. For people who already have medical conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart disease, the flu can make their conditions worse and lead to serious complications.

Flu shots prevent 40 percent of flu-related hospitalizations among adults and 82 percent of admissions into an intensive care unit.

The Echoes of the Past celebrates the community

With the cooperation of Mother Nature, The Echoes of the Past Fall Festival was held Oct. 14-15 in Claypool to the delight of the community.

The event kicked off early with the club playing host to Claypool Elementary students Friday morning. Those students with perfect attendance were rewarded with a trip to the festival where they could participate in the activities and were treated to cookies and hot chocolate and a free pumpkin to take home.

Approximately 100 students vis-

ited the festival before the official start time of 4 p.m. Once the event opened to the public, young and old alike enjoyed the variety of activities provided by the club.

Members rounded the tractor driving experience hundreds of times with their John Deere and Farmall tractors, allowing children to feel the excitement behind the wheel of a tractor. The corn maze proved to be a challenge for many as they found their way through the tractor-designed puzzle of stalks.

Letters to the editor

Prosecutor is most powerful individual in county

Dear Editor:

I have met Travis McConnell and found him to be a nice man. I am pleased that he has taken an active role in our community. However, his recent letter to the editor seems to cast aspersions on individuals who have served as Kosciusko County prosecutor.

David Kolbe, Mike Miner, Steve Hearn and Dan Hampton have all served our community greatly as prosecutor. They swore to uphold

the federal and state constitutions and enforce the laws, which they did. They used common sense and knowledge of the law to make their decisions. The events mentioned by Mr. McConnell would have occurred during their administrations.

I do know that the Indiana Department of Child Services investigated Hephzibah House several times. The results of the investigation did not find criminal conduct.

If the facts set forth by local

news sources as to the conduct of John Lowe and a 16-year-old girl are correct, the conduct of Mr. Lowe was wrong, but not criminal. The acts of Mr. Lowe were not child molesting as defined by I.C.35-42-4-3, nor child solicitation as defined by I.C.35-42-4-6, nor child seduction as defined by I.C.35-42-4-7 nor sexual misconduct with a minor as defined by I.C.35-44-3-10 or I.C.35-42-49. If I have missed an appropriate criminal citation in regard to Mr.

Humbled by community’s response

As I, still new to the position of executive director at the North Webster Community Center, experienced the “Heart of the Community” Dinner and Auction for the first time Saturday, Oct. 1, I was completely humbled by the community’s positive response.

In fact, I have never before been so proud to be part of this small town as I was that night. Our community, though not shocking, was thrilled to be “back home” in our gymnasium. We have waited two long years to celebrate together, and that we did. We had the opportunity to share din-

ner, tell stories and truly support an organization that, from the beginning, promised to not put a strain but be a blessing for our taxpayers.

NWCC’s board has always taken the position that if it is of importance, our community will make it a priority. The community I so lovingly grew up in proved our center is the priority, with a record-breaking event that netted more than $100,000, giving us the ability to plan ahead and focus on 2023.

On behalf of the board of directors, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our community.

Businesses and residents alike gave

openly and freely of money, gifts and volunteer labor. We have for years used this fundraising to support our operational and program costs.

For the first time ever in the history of our organization, we are pleased to announce we are over 50% of the way to our annual goal for next year. We could not be more thankful nor more excited about our future.

Wishing our community all the best, Emily Worrell Executive Director North Webster Community Center

Our requirements are as follows: Letters must be written to the editor, not the public. They must be signed with full name in ink. Signatures will be printed on all letters. Letters must include an address and phone number, which will be used for verification, but will not be published. Letters may be emailed to dpatterson@the-papers.com. Letters longer than 400 words may be edited for brevity.

Writers may be limited to one published letter per month. Readers with lengthy comments should contact an editor about possible guest columns.

Send letters to: ‘the PAPER,’114 W. Market St., Warsaw, IN 46580.

Lowe’s conduct, I would appreciate being so informed.

A county prosecutor is the most powerful individual in a county. A prosecutor must ensure that his or

her acts are within the confines of actual law, or citizens will lose their freedoms and reputations.

Pray before you vote

Dear Editor:

This is a reminder to area people who are registered legally: Elections are three weeks away. This is critical for our nation’s survival.

One morning when waking up, the Holy Spirit gave me Pennsylvania to pray for. I asked the Holy Spirit, why do you want me to pray for Pennsylvania? A few days later, I received a letter from Pennsylvania from the organization CMP. They claim the University of Pittsburgh is selling body parts with many well-known persons involved.

I decided to check to see where campaigning was taking place. Mr. Trump has been campaigning for his party in several cities in Pennsylvania while Mr. Biden focused on Pittsburgh.

Remember your tax dollars are being used at these abortion centers. I know where my vote is going. I hope you will cast yours for life. When asking the Holy Spirit when COVID will end, he simply said when they stop killing my children.

I am asking you to pray for abortions to end and to vote for the candidates who believe for abortions to end as well. Psalm 139 says he planned us even before we were born. How many pastors, evangelists and presidents have we aborted?

Pray before you vote. Thank you and may God’s peace encompass you as you go to the polls.

In Christ’s love, Mrs. Serita Miner

Art history quiz

This week we are going to review the four art movements we have discussed so far and have a fun quiz to see how much you remember. Hint: All of the answers can be found in this week’s article.

The first art movement we talked about was the Renaissance, which began in 1300 and ended in 1600 and is generally associated with Italy. Instead of relying on religion to answer all questions about hu-

Notice

man relationships, there was a shift to using logic and reason to answer such inquiries. When viewing art from the Renaissance period, look for signs of classical architecture and classical figures such as gods and heroes.

Another sign of artwork created during the Renaissance is the use of linear perspective. In simple terms, linear perspective is the point on the horizon in a work of art where everything meets. Some famous artists of the Renaissance period are Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo Da

Vinci, Andrea Verrocchio, Michelangelo and the father of linear perspective, Filippo Brunelleschi.

Baroque art is “characterized by great drama, rich, deep color and intense light and dark shadows.” (wikipedia.org/wiki/baroque_painting). When in a museum viewing artwork from the Baroque period, it will stand out because of its heavy use of light and shadow and the serious subject matter. Famous artists of the Baroque period include Rembrandt and Peter Rubins.

During the Rococo period, the deep intense colors of the Baroque were replaced with ethereal shades such as light-hearted pinks and soft sky blues. The Rococo style of art consisted of exceptional ornamental elements and was full of theatrics. Rococo artists included Jean-Honoré Fragonard and Francois Boucher.

Kosciusko

REMC to hold electric vehicle test drive event

Kosciusko REMC will hold an electric vehicle test drive experience event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. KREMC has invited its members to participate in the event at no cost. Members will be able to register on-site to test drive an EV around a designated route and learn more about EVs from employees and educational handouts.

This event will be held at the KREMC facility, 370 South 250 East Warsaw. Food will be available from the Crooked Barn Smoked BBQ food truck. KREMC members who test drive an EV at the event will receive a free meal from Crooked Barn’s food truck for themselves and any family members present.

To test drive an EV at KREMC’s event, members must be over 18 years old, have a valid driver’s license and sign a waiver. A representative from the organization providing the EV will be present in the car during the test drive.

The purpose of KREMC’s EV event is to provide interested members with a chance to experience driving an EV without the pressure of purchasing one. Wabash Valley Power Alliance will provide its Tesla Model 3 as part of the test drive experience and the Kerlin Motor Company is contributing a Ford Lightning Truck.

KREMC hopes to inform members objectively about the topic and its influence on home electric systems at this event. If the community responds positively, KREMC will consider making the event annual.

For more information and EV event updates, visit Kosciusko REMC’s social media pages @KosciuskoREMC.

Kosciusko REMC is a Touchstone Energy electric cooperative serving more than 18,000 accounts throughout Kosciusko County and into surrounding counties.

Interra Credit Union holds annual Do Well To Do Good Day

As part of Interra Credit Union’s Do Well To Do Good vision, the credit union recently held its annual staff volunteer day on Monday, Oct. 10.

On the credit union’s third annual Do Well To Do Good Day, staff members had the opportunity to ignite their spark within and assist the community in a variety of ways.

“It always amazes me how Interra staff are so committed to offer their time to make a difference in our local communities,” said Amy Sink, CEO. “Lives are changed when we take a few minutes to offer our time, treasure and talents to assist our local nonprofit partners.”

All staff gathered at the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds for a morning presentation, followed by food trucks and time together, before dispersing into the credit union’s local communities to serve. Interra had nearly 300 staff members provide roughly 1,200 volunteer hours while serving 32 organizations in the five counties

of Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Marshall and Noble.

Staff assisted the organizations in a variety of ways, including but not limited to building bunk beds, outside painting and general maintenance repairs and needs, stocking shelves for local food pantries, reading to and mentoring children at various schools, putting together baskets with essential items to support our troops and more.

“Partners like Interra Credit Union allow us to fulfill a significant need in our local communities,” said Jenny Sager, chapter co-president of Sleep In Heavenly Peace of Elkhart County.

“Our mission is to ensure no child sleeps on the floor and the Interra team plays a part in driving that mission.”

Interra partnered with Acts of Service through the Community Foundation of Elkhart County to secure organizations in the communities the credit union serves.

Oakwood Cemetery requests removal of non-adhered decorations

As the removal of leaves will begin soon, Oakwood Cemetery is requesting all non-adhered decorations be removed as soon as possible.

Pots with flowers on foundations and monument bases, as well as saddles (flower arrangements on top of monuments), do not need to be removed.

Winter/Christmas decorations may be placed after Nov. 15. Please do not place wreaths or grave blankets on graves until leaf season is

over, which depends on the weather and not a calendar date.

Grave blankets placed this winter must be removed by March 1, 2023.

The Oakwood Cemetery staff appreciate the family and friends of deceased loved ones who respect the cemetery rules and regulations, and in doing so, participate in making the community’s cemetery a beautiful and safe place to honor loved ones.

The credit union worked alongside the following entities: Blue Star Mothers; Boys & Girls Club of Nappanee; Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds; Fairfield Community Schools, including Benton Elementary, Millersburg Elementary/Middle School, New Paris

Elementary and Fairfield Jr. Sr. High; Lakeland Youth Center; Lighthouse Daycare & Learning Center; Northern Food Bank of Indiana (card making); Sleep In Heavenly Peace; and the Syracuse Food Pantry.

Interra Credit Union, head-

quartered in Goshen, was charted in 1932 and has assets of $1.6 billion. The credit union’s field of membership spans 18 counties in northern Indiana, with more than 300 full- and part-time employees serving more than 91,000 members.

World Missionary Press to dedicate building expansion

World Missionary Press will dedicate its recent building expansion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, Nov. 5, at its facility on CR 146. The public is invited to attend the open house and take a tour of the facility from 1- 3 p.m. The building dedication will follow the last tour, at 3:30 p.m.

WMP will also celebrate its 61st anniversary at 6 p.m. that day at the Winona Heritage Room, 901 Park Ave., Winona Lake. The featured speaker will be Cleopas Chitapa, national coordinator for WMP in Zimbabwe. Music will be led by Del Yoder.

WMP prints Scripture booklets that are distributed around the world free of charge.

From humble beginnings in South Africa in the 1950s, when missionaries Rose and Watson Goodman hand-copied Scripture into African languages, the idea gained momentum and World Missionary Press was founded in 1961. World Missionary Press has printed more than 2.6 billion booklets over the last 61 years.

Requests for Scripture booklets from around the world come in faster than they can be printed. World Missionary Press has had to expand its

facility and purchase a third booklet bindery to meet the demand.

WMP prints booklets in 350 languages.

Literature from the World Missionary Press has been distributed in 210 nations and territories of the world.

Approximately 700 volunteers from more than 100 churches donate time to help at WMP.

The event will also be live streamed at wmpress.org/livestream.

Purdue Extension to host workshop for next generation of farmland seekers

Ready to grow your farm operation, but unsure how to acquire more land? During the Farmland for the Next Generation program, hear from industry representatives, farmers and extension personnel as they prepare you for your future land acquisitions.

Farmland for the Next Generation is an interactive program series that addresses three paths to land access: leasing, purchasing and receiving land through inheritance or gift. It utilizes a skills-based approached that focuses on what people need to be able to do, not just on what they need to know.

This four-session virtual workshop series will be offered from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays from Nov. 7-28.

Industry representatives, farmers and Purdue Extension educators will be presenting a variety of topics throughout the four sessions that will help prepare you for future land acquisi-

tions. Some of the topics they will cover:

• Financial readiness

• Paths to land access

• Finding farmland

• Assessing farmland suitability

• Success stories

The registration fee for this workshop is $50. Individuals wanting to participate in this virtual workshop can sign up at tinyurl.com/farmland22. The deadline for registration is Monday, Oct. 31.

This curriculum was created by the American Farmland Trust, supported by a four-year educational enhancement grant from the USDA Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development program.

For more information, or if you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in the program, contact Kathryn Weiss at (219) 285-8620, ext. 2800, or weiss44@purdue.edu prior to the program.

Letter to the editor Support for Marshall

I first met James Marshall in 2002 when I was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company 1st Battalion 293 Infantry. James was a team leader in the Scout Platoon for the battalion and I was then assigned to the Scouts as well. At that time, it was post 9/11 and a possible deployment was imminent.

James was a leader within the Scouts and part of the bedrock for the organization. As training increased, the intensity and difficult nature of the training increased as well because of the possible deployment. The entire time James was steadfast in his resolve to improve the soldiers within the platoon.

As the unit began preparation to deploy once the deployment notice was announced, James was a stellar example of a leader, he was again a rock for the soldiers. Throughout training for the deployment, James had an unmatched resolve. James was a leader who got better with stress, consistently providing the best leadership anyone could ask for.

Throughout the train-up and initial deployment to Kuwait, James proved to be a tireless leader. Throughout the entire process, James was steadfast and even-keeled. Any unit deploying has the uncertainty of the development looming before it; with this one the unknown of going into Iraq was difficult for many soldiers. James never wavered;

he always was the one you could count on for a level head in any situation.

Our unit in Iraq faced many challenges, yet James never wavered in his leadership. Often our unit was placed in extremely stressful and dangerous situations while living in very austere conditions. Our unit was with the initial ground push into Iraq in March 2003. Our mission set included a multitude of varied missions and operations. These included but were not limited to scout/surveillance operations, sniper missions and patrols both mounted and dismounted. Our unit had engagements with enemy forces during these operations. Despite the danger we faced, James was a rock for the soldiers he led and the entire organization.

In almost 25 years in the United States Army, I have never met a more dedicated and powerful leader as James Marshall. Our unit would not have been as safe and successful on that 2003 deployment to Iraq without James.

As a leader it’s important to surround yourself with quality people. and James is just that in everything he does: quality. He is a leader I could count on to accomplish any mission he was assigned.

That deployment was the one I cherish the most because of what we accomplished and because of the close friends we all became. James and I have maintained contact for 20 years now since

Drop-off sites to open for Operation Christmas Child

More than 4,500 locations will open to collect Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts for the Samaritan’s Purse project. Volunteers are preparing to collect shoebox gifts during National Collection Week, Nov. 14-21.

Operation Christmas Child has been collecting and delivering shoebox gifts filled with school supplies, hygiene items and fun toys to children worldwide since 1993. Anyone can pack a shoebox. In 2022, Operation Christmas Child hopes to collect enough shoeboxes to reach another 11 million children.

Individuals, families and groups still have time to transform empty shoeboxes into fun gifts. The project partners with local churches across the globe to deliver these tangible expressions

of God’s love to children in need.

Find a step-by-step guide on the How to Pack a Shoebox samaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/pack-a-shoe-box.

“Now more than ever, children around the world need to know that God loves them and there is hope,” said Franklin Graham, president of Samaritan’s Purse.

“A simple shoebox gift opens the door to share about the true hope that can only be found in Jesus Christ.”

Participants can find the nearest drop-off location and hours of operation as they make plans to drop off their shoebox gifts. The

online lookup tool is searchable by City or ZIP code. Signs at each location will identify the drop-off.

Drop-off locations serving the community include:

Sunday, Nov. 20; and 7:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21.

Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, seeks to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world and, together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 198 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 170 countries and territories. This year, Operation Christmas Child will collect its 200 millionth shoebox.

Watershed Foundation kicks off photo contest

The Watershed Foundation has kicked off its annual “Picture Your Watershed” photo contest.

Participants can enter their photograph into the contest at watershedfoundation.org/ events. Rules and instructions for entering the contest can be found there.

Photographers are encouraged to submit their favorite pictures from the land and lakes within the upper Tippecanoe River watershed.

The competition is limited to photos taken in the upper Tippecanoe River watershed, spanning from Crooked Lake in Whitley County through the Tippecanoe River downstream of Warsaw. This area includes Big, Crooked, Loon, Goose, Old, New, Barbee, Center, Chapman, Pike, Ridinger, Tippecanoe, Webster and Winona lakes; Tippecanoe River; and all of the land within.

“We are looking for photos that really capture the spirit and beauty of our watershed,” said Jennifer Romano, commu-

nications coordinator for The Watershed Foundation. “It’s quite impressive to view our watershed through the lens of our very talented local residents, to see where they find peace and enjoyment in the vastness of our watershed.”

The deadline to submit photos is Dec. 31. After that, the organization will begin open voting for the “People’s Choice” award through watershedfoundation.org.

TWF was founded in 1997 to protect and improve water quality in the upper Tippecanoe River watershed. In the past 25 years, TWF has worked with farmers and lake residents to implement more than 200 water quality improvement projects, keeping lakes healthy and stopping pollution at its source.
