Christmas Bucks are coming to town 7H[W DQG SKRWRV %\ 3+2(%( 087+$57 6WDII :ULWHU Temperatures are dropping and holiday morale is boosting just in time for The Papers Inc.’s highly-anticipated annual holiday promotion: Christmas Bucks.

Participating merchants from Kosciusko County take part in the annual promotion to lend a hand in alleviating Christmas shopping expenses.

This year’s Christmas Bucks promotion will be from Wednesday, Oct. 25, to Wednesday, Nov. 8.

The combined winners will re-

ceive a total of $3,000 Christmas Bucks, redeemable at participating merchants through Sunday, Dec. 31.

The first-place winner will be awarded $1,000 in Christmas Bucks, second and third place will each receive $500, and fourth through seventh places will each receive $250.

To try your luck at one of the seven cash-equivalent prizes, you can cut out an entry form found in this edition or from any of the participating merchants.

You just have to leave your name, address, contact informa-

tion, and the store you are participating through on one of the forms and leave it in the decorative Christmas Bucks box that will be on-site.

You do not have to make a purchase, nor do you have to be present to win. You can register each time you visit a participating store, but are allowed only one coupon per visit. Employees and their immediate families are not eligible at their place of employment.

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR Foster caregiver provides a safe, happy environment for dogs %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “I’ve loved animals since the moment I first started walking,” stated Amy Isenberg. “I remember rescuing a chipmunk from a cat when I was little, and the chipmunk bit me. Even though the little creature didn’t understand my intentions, I never stopped rescuing animals. I believe every animal needs a safe, happy environment.”

Isenberg volunteers for shelters and rescue facilities in Kosciusko County.

“Twelve summers ago, my daughter Erica left for college.

My mother had just passed away and I felt as though I had no one to nurture. So, I got in touch with the director of One Dog at a Time rescue in Warsaw. I was matched with a golden retriever to foster, and I was hooked.”

When she put in the work to house, feed and socialize the golden retriever, and the animal found a forever home, she sobbed openly. “I don’t believe a person would be a good foster caregiver for a dog or cat if they didn’t miss

the animal after it left.”

Isenberg is not the only member of her family who gets attached to her foster animals.

“On a day when another of my dogs found a forever home, my daughter Erica was with me. We were going to a bridal shower together. We both felt so lonely after the dog left that we cried all the way to the shower.”

In the last 12 years, Isenberg believes she has fostered close to 150 dogs. “Just recently, I fostered a momma and 11 puppies from New Hope in Syracuse. They were all chocolate labs. It took a lot of time and energy. But all of them went to wonderful homes.”

Isenberg recalls her challenge of getting them all back into their pen. “Each time I’d open the pen door, the ones I’d put in would get out again. Then I tried lifting them in when the door was shut.

Each dog weighed more than 10 pounds. Finally, I threw a handful of Cheerios into the pen. Mom and pups came running. I had no more problems as long as I had my cereal with me.”

when they take a dog or puppy home, she knows she’s making a difference. “By that time, they have filled out the necessary paperwork, we’ve checked them out to make sure they will be good pet owners, and they’ve paid the adoption fee. They are ready to take the dog home.”

She makes some forever friends when they adopt a dog she has fostered. “Zippy was a terrier that was a little too much for most families. However, when he joined the family of a retired pet groomer with a husband who is a dog trainer, Zippy met his match.”

A note from Zippy’s human mom: “Zippy looks at the chickens in the yard, but hardly ever barks. He seldom poops in the house and has only bit three people, all family members. We are doing quite well. LOL.” Isenberg has also volunteered for Trap, Neuter, Release in Warsaw. “I’ve trapped 13 feral cats so they could be spayed/neutered. A farmer adopted them. He keeps them in one of his outbuildings.”

Isenberg enjoys kayaking on Tippecanoe Lake, where she makes her home. She’s also a leader of her neighborhood association.

see it right off the bat, maybe you just need to dig a little bit deeper and see maybe the hard places that grace hides itself in, and also that grace really shows up in unexpected ways. So when you’re in a challenging time to look for grace where you wouldn’t think it could hide.”

She also challenged those present to think about, “What is your red feather? What is the thing in your life that makes you think of God’s faithfulness or maybe just hope for the future? Because we all have hard times. We all need something to get through those hard times.”

Lee was presented with a drawing, made by North Webster Elementary Art Teacher Kim Gause, depicting various aspects of Lee’s life.

Prior to Lee’s presentation, DeeAnna Muraski, executive director and CEO, highlighted the programs of Operation Read, formerly Kosciusko Literacy Services.

Such programs included the baby library where 100% of newborns in the county receive their first book, a baby’s first bookmark and baby’s first library; Read to Grow Children’s book club; adult tutoring books; book review offering reading incentives which will be offered at Milford Elementary this year; Senior Memory Program and more.

Guests had the opportunity to purchase Lee’s two books, get autographs and have photographs taken with her.

Each guest left with a bag with information about Operation Read, candy and of course a book and bookmark.

ing career and the red feathers, Lee related it came after she was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2015. She said how she was at a low point in her life until a little bird “comes into my life. I didn’t see those red feathers until it turned around … maybe this was supposed to happen. Maybe things are as they seem.”

Three months after that surgery, she started writing her memoir. After going to a writer’s conference, where no one was interested in it, she tossed the book. Instead, after meeting a devotional acquisition editor and pitching an idea, she wrote some samples and the book was published.

She then concentrated on the memoir, which was finished in August. “Honestly, God said ‘here you go.’ It gave me time as a person and as a writer to be able to tell this next story well or better than it was before.”

Lee noted 23 years after leaving the show and Hollywood, she met up with the cast at a luncheon 19 years ago. For the last 18 years she has been traveling with Alison Arngrim, who was Nellie Olson; Charlotte Stewart, Miss Beadle; and Dean Butler, Almanzo Wilder.

“I can’t believe this is my life.

God is so good, and he’s brought me so far. Incredible. Beyond just being on the show … I still have this family that everywhere we go, it’s like summer camp…”

Lee left the audience with this thought: “I had to look back at my life and I had to see the good. See the good even in those hard places.

Referring to her character’s name, “Grace,” on The Little House on the Prairie, Wendi Lou Lee spoke about God’s grace in her life and how “grace sometimes comes in little tiny moments and you see that goodness.”

Lee was the keynote speaker at Operation Read’s annual Author Dinner Thursday, Oct. 12.

The event was held at the Shrine Building at the Kosciusko County Fairgrounds, Warsaw.

Before she started on her presentation, she spoke about Operation Read and a little about promoting reading. She noted as a child she didn’t have books in her house. The only time they had them was when the family went to the library. She remembers being in first grade and there was a book fair. “I remember the one time that my mom told each of us girls, there was three of us, to pick out a book.”

She remembers one of her sisters getting “On Market Street,” an ABC book that her sister still has.

“I didn’t grow up in a book reading family at all. We didn’t have shelves of books in our house and I never, ever liked reading. I never did it as a kid. I didn’t read Little House on the Prairie until I was an adult.” Through her husband’s family, she learned to love reading and was around a lot of books. “Literacy begins at a very, very early age. What you all are doing here is incredible. I applaud you. Thank you for being here supporting this incredible organization.”

Lee, who has only been an author for the past seven years, not only spoke about how her first book “A Prairie Devotional,” was created, but provided insights about the red feathers found on each table and the title of her latest book, “Red Tail Feathers.”

She also answered questions she is frequently asked about career: her work with Michael Landon, the cast and crew of Little House on the Prairie; how much she remembered about the show; her acting career after Little House; when she started writing; and if she kept in contact with the cast. She ended the evening by answering several questions from the audience.

Lee shared how she and her twin sister, Brenda, came to be on the show for four seasons, and the one commercial they did after that, which was also the end of their career. She said how Landon became a stand-in father figure, and gave them the foundation of what a family was like. She also said how the entire group connected with Little House was a family.

The Silver Lake Conservation Foundation Inc. was selected by the Kosciusko County Community Foundation as a grant award recipient of community funds.

The grant money will be used for costs associated with the scientific study, including water quality monitoring, of Silver Lake and North Little Lake in southern Kosciusko County.

Milford Fire Department shared the following cooking safety tips through this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign: • Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove to prevent spills and burns.

• Always keep a lid nearby when cooking on the stove. If a small fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.

• Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, boiling, grilling or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.

• If you are simmering, baking or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the home while food is cooking and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.

• Keep kids and pets 3 feet from the stove/oven and where hot foods and liquids are being served.

• Watch what you heat. Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.

• Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stove top.

• Be alert. If you are tired or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the stove/oven.

NAPPANEE AREA NEWS Nappanee City Council approves 2024 budget The Nappanee City Council approved a proposed $18.3 million budget for 2024 during its Monday, Oct. 16 regular monthly meeting.

Included is a more than $3 million general obligation bond and debt service, which will be used toward the city’s new fire station.

The 2024 budget is more than $4 million more than the 2023 budget, thanks in part to a 4% salary increase for most city employees.

Many department budgets were increased thanks to additional employees. The largest increase, however, was in the board of works budget from the obligation bond and debt service.

The estimated tax rate is $1.42

Dutkowski named executive director at Nappanee Chamber of Commerce The Nappanee Chamber of Commerce board of directors has announced that Bill Dutkowski of Nappanee has been named the new executive director.

Dutkowski comes to the chamber with a very diverse background and experiences. His family has owned multiple restaurants, and is familiar with small business operations. Before moving to Indiana, Dutkowski served as the advancement director at Christian Heritage Academy in the northern suburbs of Chicago, where he oversaw fundraising, admissions, public relations and special events.

Prior to moving to the Chicago area, Dutkowski served as a high school guidance counselor and varsity boys basketball coach at Portsmouth Christian Academy in Dover, N.H. He has also sold radio

advertising and developed operational procedures for an international cell phone company.

To round out his diverse background and experiences, Dutkowski also made snow at the local ski area as his college job. When he wasn’t making snow, he earned his bachelor of science in psychology and his master’s of arts in organizational leadership at New England College in Henniker, N.H. Dutkowski and his family are originally from New Hampshire, and relocated to the Midwest in 2007. They have lived in the WaNee school district since 2013 and have lived in Nappanee since 2019.

He and his wife, Sharon, have been married for 28 years, and have four children.

Alec, 27, and his wife, Taelor, were married in 2022 and live in Elkhart. Alec is one of the assistant professionals at Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame, and Taelor is the SEC reporting analyst at Patrick Industries.

Matt, 23, is a senior at Taylor University majoring in sports management with minors in coaching and management. He is engaged to be married in June 2024 to Ali Unruh of Meade, Kan. He also competes on the baseball team.

Alison, 20, is a sophomore at Grace College majoring in elementary education.

Nate, 16, is a junior at NorthWood High School and competes on the baseball team and serves as a student helper for unified football.

The “I’m Thankful Four” race will take place at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 23.

Kelsey Mikel was 16 years old and a junior at NorthWood when she passed away as the result of an auto accident. Kelsey left a legacy of love and service. Her gift of organ and tissue donation saved four lives and helped heal over 70 others. She was the business manager for the yearbook, a manager for the cross country team and a member of the golf and track teams. Above all, she was loved dearly by her family and friends, and loved them back fiercely.

In other business, Mark Mikel, executive director of The Center (formerly Family Christian Development Center) provided an update to the council on the nonprofit community service organization’s activities. He provided an update on The Center’s finances, including outlays, donations and grants. One planned project is to start a basic computer class for its clients.

Mayor Phil Jenkins informed the council the Woodview Drive project (CR 52 between SR 19 and CR 7) is expected to be completed by Thanksgiving.

NAPPANEE AREA NEWS Vertical Basketball sign-up deadline is Saturday, Oct. 28 Registration is now open for the Vertical Basketball program through Nappanee Missionary Church; however, you must sign up by Saturday, Oct. 28.

Vertical Basketball introduces kids in first through fourth grade to the game of basketball, and develops their skills within a Christ-centered environment.

Students experience a fun, encouraging atmosphere as they improve their basketball skills and form relationships with other kids and their coaches.

The 2024 season will run from Saturday, Jan. 13, through Saturday, March 2, with an extended practice and a coach meet-andgreet Saturday, Jan. 6. Teams will play eight games during the season on Saturdays at Nappanee Elementary School and Nappanee Boys and Girls Club.

A drills and skills assessment Saturday, Oct. 28, at Nappanee Elementary School will cover fundamental basketball skills, such as shooting, dribbling, passing and defense techniques.

The skills assessment is highly encouraged and gives the leadership team a chance to assess all players and create balanced teams. The session for girls will take place from 8:30-10 a.m. and for boys from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

A Pierceton ‘picker’ %\ '$5/$ 0&&$0021 $1' '(($11$ 085$6., *XHVW :ULWHUV The new art exhibitor in the Warsaw City Hall is Dave Taylor of Blue Pearl.

Taylor is not an artist per se; however, he is an art enthusiast and appreciator. Taylor started collecting art years ago using his art education background.

This segued into looking for art in unusual spaces. Additionally, as most of us have experienced, sometimes one generation’s taste in art is very different than the last.

Thus, when that generation passes away, the art is disposed of without any knowledge of the value or story of the art. Taylor hunts for these treasures at estate auctions, garage sales and unsuspecting potential art hot

spots. Taylor evaluates and appraises art and antiques due to his vast knowledge and experience in the space. What we might see as trash he recognizes as treasure.

“Finding” art is not as easy as it might sound. You first must have a base knowledge of composition, lighting skills, perspective, values, etc. Then you have to add to that knowledge the ability to evaluate framing, canvas and paint materials.

Lastly, you would need to take into account the historical lineage of the painting.

Taylor’s exhibit will be displayed through the end of the year. Something unique with this exhibit is that due to the high quantity of art Taylor has amassed, he will be rotating out certain pieces of the exhibit. So, you will want to make sure to

take several visits to city hall to see if you can spy the changes.

While little art displayed is done by Taylor himself, you will enjoy viewing other artists’ works saved through Taylor’s heroic and visionary efforts.

• Warsaw City Hall. Pierceton Picker Art, curated by Taylor, is displayed through the end of the year. Make sure to visit several times as the displays will change and different artists are featured. The art is picked from many locations throughout the U.S. and the world, not just Pierceton.

Twenty-one local organizations recently received more than $141,000 in funding from Kosciusko County Community Foundation’s community funds. Funds are awarded three times per year.

Funds are awarded based on a competitive grant application process. Nonprofit organizations serving Kosciusko County can apply in seven areas of interest that include arts/culture, human services, civic projects, recreation, environment, health and education.

Lost Sparrows was one of this year’s grant recipients. Its proposal was for an online learning management system to build trainings and allow content to be shared quickly and easily on childhood trauma.

“As we work to support families in our community and help train teachers on the impact of trauma, we realized the critical need for an online learning management system,” said Darren Gagnon, president of Lost Sparrows. “The grant received from the community foundation will be used to provide quality training for those who need it most in Kosciusko County.”

Committee narrows proposals for new Nappanee fire station %\ .(,7+ .1(33 6WDII :ULWHU The Technical Review Committee, which is tasked with locally shepherding of the new fire station in Nappanee, met Thursday morning, Oct. 19, via a Zoom call with Ladon Martin of The Veridus Group, an Indianapolis-based capital construction consultant overseeing the bidding and proposal stage of the project.

Seven companies submitted proposals for the building of the new station, which will be located at 1105 N. Main St., Nappanee. Ancon Construction, Goshen; DJ Construction, Goshen; R. Yoder Construction, Nappanee; Weigand Construction, South Bend; Performance Services, Indianapolis; Brown and Brown General Contractors, Wakarusa; and Majority Builders, South Bend, each submitted proposals

for the committee to review and consider.

According to Nappanee Mayor Phil Jenkins, the Board of Works will make a final decision on the preferred builder March 25, 2024.

The city is hopeful the station will be completed in November 2025, although many variables could affect that date.

During the meeting, TRC announced it will recommend three of the companies for further

consideration: Majority Builders, Performance Services and Weigand Construction. The recommendation must be approved by the Nappanee Board of Works during its next meeting at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, at Nap-

panee City Hall.

The TRC is hopeful that a contractor can be chosen by March 25.

OBITUARIES Randy Goon

Lifetime Area Resident Randy Goon, a hardworking individual who dedicated his life to his career and cherished moments spent with family and friends, passed away Monday, Oct. 16, 2023.

He was born Aug. 3, 1954, in Kosciusko County, where he remained a lifetime resident. Randy was beloved by those who knew him and will be remem- 5$1'< *221 bered for his big heart, selflessness and an unforgettable laugh.

Throughout his life, Randy held various positions at Paragon Medical, United Telephone, Othy and several other establishments. He demonstrated great work ethic and dedication in all his endeavors. Randy’s commitment to excellence made him a respected employee among his peers.

Outside of work, Randy had a passion for the simple joys of life. He had a deep love for fishing and ice fishing and cherished spending time outdoors. Additionally, he was a true gearhead who found excitement in watching racing events and owned several iconic muscle cars throughout the years. Randy’s favorites included the ’55 Chevy, Chevy Nova, Oldsmobile 442, Stingray Corvette, among others.

Randy will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his son, Joshua Goon of Leesburg; daughter, Ashlie (Jeremy) Marvel of Milford; sister, Nancy (Buzz) Keck of Ohio; brother, Tim (Amy) Goon of Warsaw; and grandson, Cayden Goon, the son of Josh.

Randy’s passing leaves a void that cannot be filled. However, the memory of his infectious laughter and caring nature will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He was preceded in passing by his parents, Junior and Serita “Maxine” Goon; and by his sister, Sally Goon.

Titus Funeral Home of North Webster is entrusted with Randy’s care. A visitation service was held from 4-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at Titus Funeral Home, 8056 E. 500N, North Webster. Following the visitation, a life celebration funeral was held.

Shirley Darlene Graff A Native Of Milford

Shirley Darlene Graff, Winona Lake, passed away at 4:24 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne, at the age of 88.

She was born July 31, 1935, in Milford, to Sarah Ann (Gerber) Slabaugh and Roman Edward Slabaugh. Shirley was a 1954 graduate of Milford High School. After graduation at the young age of 18, she 6+,5/(< married Roger Bird Graff on July 3, 1954, in Milford. '$5/(1( They were blessed with two children, shared the joy *5$)) of becoming grandparents and great-grandparents, celebrated many birthdays, holidays, family gatherings and everything in between. Roger passed away Sept. 21, 2007, and had 53 years of marriage to be proud of.

Shirley lived in Milford for many years, working at The Papers until moving to Fort Wayne in 1976. She was very good with her hands and detail work and enjoyed her job at Hobby Lobby as a framer. Shirley loved doing crafts, sewing, knitting and crocheting and many family members were recipients of her loving creations. She loved serving the Lord and was very active in her church home at Milford Christian Church and Cedar Creek Church of Christ in Fort Wayne. She moved to Winona Lake in 2015 to be with her family. Shirley will forever be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many.

She leaves behind her daughter, Rhonda (Tom) Edgington, Winona Lake; son, Rick (Sonji) Graff, Warsaw; seven grandchildren, Jason Graff, Kyle (Jodie) Graff, Sara (Luke) Minear, Brandi (Tim) Wright, Nicole (Micah) Nightingale, Brittney (Matt) Abernethy and Nathaniel (Kelly) Raber; and 25 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Dot Boyd, Sebring, Fla., and Pat Yeater, Chandler, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger; brother, Larry Slabaugh; and sister, Gloria Baumgartner.

Shirley’s life was celebrated with a service at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw, and officiated by Pastor Tim Wright. Friends and family visited prior to the service from noon to 3 p.m. A private family graveside service will take place at a later date at Milford Cemetery in Milford.

Marcinda “Cindy” Trammel, 85, Syracuse, passed away Tueday, Oct. 17, 2023, at Goshen Hospital.

She was born Jan. 16, 1938, in Angola, to Charles and Alice (Van Nuys) Dannells. On July 3, 1954, she married Richard Trammel, who preceded her in 2010.

0$5&,1'$ She and her husband moved to the Syracuse 75$00(/ area in 1958. She retired as a parts inspector for Goshen Rubber/Parker Hannifin of Goshen. She also served as the director of Syracuse Nutrition at the Syracuse Community Center. She was a member of the Shepherd by the Lakes Lutheran Church, Turkey Creek Senior Citizens Club, Syracuse American Legion Auxiliary and the Merry Martha Society.

She is survived by her four children, Jack (Michelle) Trammel of Syracuse, Marjorie “Marge” Emerick of Syracuse, Kim (Brian ) Tucker of Bradenton, Fla., and Thomas (Stacie) of Syracuse; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Along with her husband, she was preceded by her daughter, Lorna Coy; three sisters, Laura, Lillie and Mabel; two brothers, Charles and Francis; and three grandsons, David, Neil and Richard.

Services was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Eastlund Funeral Home, Syracuse. Visitation was from 1-3 p.m. prior to the service. Burial followed at Syracuse Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shepherd by the Lakes Lutheran Church.

Carolyn R. Barrett Carolyn R. Barrett, 88, died Oct. 11, 2023.

She was born April 19, 1935. On Dec. 25, 1949, she married James E. Barrett. He preceded her in death Feb. 8, 2004.

Surviving are daughters, Diana Craig and Patsy Hamilton, both of Leesburg; a granddaughter; and two great-grandsons.

Services were held Oct. 17 at Titus Funeral Home of North Webster.

Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.

She was born July 19, 1972.

She was born July 30, 1940. On Sept. 5, 1963, she married Amos P. Borkholder; he survives.

She was born July 24, 1952. On May 5, 1971, she married Fernando Garza.

Jerald A. Freet U.S. Army Veteran

Jerald “Jerry” A. Freet, 90, Nappanee, died 11:57 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, 2023, in Goshen.

He was born Jan. 2, 1933, in Nappanee, to Jacob Andrew and Ruth Cathryn (Baird) Freet. On Aug. 8, 1954, he married Anna M. (Cooper) Freet, and she died April 10, 2018.

Surviving are a son, Jay A. Freet, South Bend; -(5$/' $ three daughters, Carla R. Rabel, Nappanee, Lorie )5((7 A. (Jason) Hite, Bristol, and Kathleen J. Freet, Nappanee; two grandchildren, Nicole M. (Aaron) Hanes and Brittany E. (Aaron) Rabel Fish; seven great-grandchildren, Cole Pettry, Zoe (Alejandro) Espinoza, Zachary Rabel, Atticus Pettry, Aurora Pettry, Zalexus Rabel and Zuzu Rabel; a brother, Kay Francis Freet; and former son-in-law, Rodney Rabel.

Jerry joined the Army during the Korean War (1953). After a honorable discharge in 1955, he worked at his parent’s Texaco station. He remodeled an old schoolhouse on CR 7. A fire burned his home in 1974 and Jerry and Anna moved into the city in 1975. Jerry worked at Vincent Bach for nearly 35 years, before retiring in 2000. He taxied people and worked at GCC in Nappanee until May of 2014. He graduated in 1954 from Nappanee High School. Jerry attended and was a member of the Nappanee United Methodist Church.

A memorial gathering will be held from 1-2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, with a memorial service following at 2 p.m., all at Nappanee United Methodist Church, 301 E. Market St., Nappanee. A meal to follow at the church. Pastor Jan Brown will officiate. Burial will be at Marion National Cemetery at a later date.

She was born June 29, 1929. On July 1, 1949, she married Albert Karder Meerzo; he survives.

She was born Dec. 19, 1929. On July 28, 1949, she married Carl Orsund. He preceded her in death Nov. 10, 2014.

Extension homemakers hosting ‘Christmas Elegance’ Nov. 14 Registration is now open for “Christmas Elegance,” the Kosciusko County Extension Homemakers’ annual holiday program.

It will be held Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Home and Family Arts Building, located at Kosciusko County Fairgrounds, Warsaw.

People do not need to be an extension homemaker member to at-

tend the program.

The morning session includes: “Creating an Elegant Table Setting,” presented by Shannon Shepherd; “Elegant Christmas Table Centerpiece,” presented by Maple Avenue Florists; and “Elegant (but Easy) Festive Desserts,” presented by MaryAnn LeinhartCross.

Morning refreshments and lunch will be provided.

Participants also can choose one optional craft session in the afternoon. Craft sessions to choose from include: “Mop Head Angel”

by Janice Bolin (bring scissors and pliers to cut and twist wire); “Handmade Christmas Cards” with Carol Droke (all supplies will be furnished); and “Tulle Christmas Tree” with Sue Martin (indicate green or white; bring ruler and shears).

Sign-in will begin at 9 a.m. and the program will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Shoe drive fundraiser to help couple looking to adopt A couple trying to raise money to adopt a baby will be holding an Adoption Shoe Drive-in Fundraiser Friday, Oct. 27.

Magical Meadows hosts over 150 attendees at annual horse show Over 150 attendees gathered at Magical Meadows, 3386 East CR 525N, Warsaw, to cheer on and celebrate 72 riders as they performed at the annual horse show Sunday, Oct. 8.

“The annual horse show is my favorite time of year,” said Tammy Stackhouse, founder of Magical Meadows. “The riders work tirelessly all year long to push themselves into new territories that is made possible through therapeutic horseback riding.

Watching the joy on their faces as they perform in front of their friends and family is truly what it’s all about,” she added.

Magical Meadows provides a safe and relaxing atmosphere so riders can experience the healing powers of horses. Many first steps, first words and first milestones have been made possible through the customized programs available at the facility for those with physical, cognitive or emotional challenges.

Riders are guided by trained staff and volunteers as they experience various riding techniques, activities and games to build trust in the horse and their own abilities.

“I would encourage anyone

who is interested in learning more about our programs to please stop by. We offer many options for riders who need it most — school group classes and even volunteer opportunities,” said Stackhouse. “Each year, I am blown away by the

community’s support, and I sincerely thank you for making this possible for the riders in our area.”

Sorority taking grant applications for graduate counseling students Jean Whitenack, president of local Beta Zeta Chapter, Delta Theta Tau Sorority Inc., has announced the sorority will award $5,000 this year to students specializing in counseling.

Grants will be awarded to students at the graduate level, based on their scholastic abilities and financial needs.

Kosciusko, Elkhart judges among those honored at judicial conference Many judges, magistrates, commissioners and referees recently were recognized by Chief Justice Loretta Rush for their commitment to higher education and their longtime service.

Twenty-three judicial officers received an Indiana Judicial College certificate, 31 were recognized for participating in the twoyear, two-week Indiana Graduate Program for Judges, and six were honored for years of service on the bench. The accolades were presented at an annual judicial conference.

Indiana Judicial College Judicial officers must complete 120 hours of education, presented by the Indiana Office of Court Services, to receive this certificate. The program enhances legal knowledge and improves personal and professional development.

One area judge who was honored was Judge Christopher Kehler of Kosciusko County.

Indiana Graduate Program For Judges The graduate program is a limited attendance educational experience for appellate and triallevel judicial officers offering an in-depth and intensive learning experience and requires attendees to commit to one week of course work for two consecutive summers.

The Indiana Office of Court Services is part of the Office of Judicial Administration. It serves as the state’s judicial research and continuing judicial educa-

tion agency. It develops and sponsors educational programming for judges, probation officers and other court personnel. The office works to enhance the performance of the judicial system by continuously improving the professional competence of judicial officers.

Lincoln, Sacred Heart third-graders saddle up for Bike Rodeo The Bike Rodeo was held Friday, Oct. 6, at Sacred Heart Elementary School for Sacred Heart and Lincoln Elementary thirdgraders — continuing a Warsaw Noon Optimist Club tradition dating back about 30 years.

With the combined efforts of Tracey’s Trailer, Kosciusko County Velo and Warsaw Noon Optimist Club, 94 children from Sacred Heart and Lincoln elementary schools got to try out their skills and practice what they have been working on for the past four weeks.

Wesley Gay named to BJU Concert Choir Wesley Gay, of Wakarusa, was named to Bob Jones University’s Concert Choir. Gay is a sophomore majoring in accounting.

The concert choir is one of BJU’s upper-level choirs comprised primarily of juniors and seniors. Auditions are held for new members every August and January before the start of each semester.

The choral artistry of the BJU Concert Choir is intended to nurture spiritual reflection in the hearts and minds of both the performers and the audience.

Kosciusko County Velo provided classroom instruction for the four weeks prior to the event.

Topics covered were: bike safety instruction, biking etiquette and proper road rules for road biking.

Each child also was measured to be sized for a new properly fitting bike helmet. In addition, a bike safety picture was provided

to each student to be colored and submitted for a coloring contest.

The Warsaw Noon Optimist Club provided the end-of-therodeo treats for everyone and certificates for each of the participants. The group also awarded first-, second- and third-place prizes for the coloring contest for each classroom. Third place received a bike lock; second place received bike lights; and first place received a bike computer.

New bike helmets were provided to each student by the Noon Optimist Club.

It took many volunteers to make the Oct. 6 event happen.

The Noon Optimists are also grateful to the Warsaw Community School Corp. and the Warsaw and Winona Lake police departments.

The Bike Rodeo is a tradition that was started back in the early 1990s at Atwood Elementary School by the Warsaw Noon Optimist Club. The rodeo moved to Jefferson Elementary School

in 2006 and was held annually.

In May 2022, a rodeo was held at Warsaw Community Church with Jefferson, Claypool and Eisenhower elementary schools participating, and this tradition continued this past May. In October 2022, Sacred Heart and Lincoln elementary schools were added.

The ultimate goal is to host a rodeo for every third-grade class in Kosciusko County.
