Call or come by to sign up.” Three up and 3 down is another new activity that started earlier this year. The new game was the idea of an active member and one for people to learn. The games uses special cards for a fast-paced discard game with an unusual finish — three cards are not revealed until the very end so people will need strategy and luck. KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR
The name’s Dugan, but you can call him Socrates %\ 0$<$ 6721( :DUVDZ &RPPXQLW\ +LJK 6FKRRO ,QWHUQ Growing up in Silver Lake, Dugan Julian and his brother loved watching pro wrestling. In fifth grade they moved to Indianapolis and met kids in their apartment complex who were just as into it as they were. Untrained and unsafe, they decided to try to replicate it, and as they grew in the sport they learned how to become safe with it. At the age of 10 or 11, they would have 12 kids holding roughly 10 matches with no adult supervision, using their own or real characters, costumes, title belts, and brackets to tell the stories. They got so good during these “backyard shenanigans,” in between apartment buildings, they would have adults they didn’t even know coming out to watch them. That was when Julian knew he wanted to become a pro wrestler. After high school, he joined the Marine Corps. Even after moving away from home he watched wrestling religiously and hosted a wrestle mania watch party with the guys in his unit every year. His first year back he saw a flier for Funkdafied Wrestling Federation and his all-time favorite cruiserweight wrestler was on the roster. He took two of his daughters to the show and after talking

He had no idea there was pro wrestling in town and decided to look into it finding two of his high school friends were in FWF. After two years he finally reached out to them, and a month later he joined being told he would train for about two to three months before he even stepped into the ring. Instead, he was put into a massive royal on day one, on day two he won and got drowned out by boos, which he loved. This is where he got his title as Simon Socrates. To Julian wrestling is live story-

There’s no redo, no editing out, it just is what it is. Not only that but you have to adjust to your crowd and your partner. Everyone is fully immersed from the time the first fan walks in the door until the last one walks out. The phrase “the show must go on” is truly put
into play here. When the curtain goes up after a musical the hero and villain are holding hands and bowing and the illusion of the story is over, in pro wrestling the story is never over. “As long as the fans believe in it and wherever the fans believe in it, then it is real. There’s nothing else in the world like it.”

Not only does wrestling allow Julian to have fun but he also has met so many interesting people. “Who would’ve ever thought that some of the people that I’m closest to in the world right now I would meet in sparkly underpants while fake fighting. We’re like stunt men who took improv classes.” In wrestling nothing matters besides the story they want to tell in the ring, there’s no political ideology, there’s no religious bigotry, everything is gone. “The locker room is like a giant Switzerland,” Julian said. Once in the ring, it’s only the characters existing not the people themselves. Outside of wrestling, Julian works for a nonprofit that provides invasive species management. He has four kids, is involved with his church and so many other things that keep him busy. His wife is not into wrestling but is along for the ride with it. “She’s very much a background supporter.” Although Julian did not start his dream of becoming a pro wrestler until he was 32 he did everything needed and dedicated himself to a craft to make it to where he is. “Lifetime dreams don’t have to be dreams, it’s never too late, there is no too late. If you didn’t hit it when you thought you did it doesn’t mean you can’t hit it, it just means you might have to work harder, but the hard work is almost always worth it.”

Outdoor Notes is about all the outdoors
I stood in the yard OUTDOOR NOTES early one morning r e c e n t l y, watching our dogs, waiting for them to relieve themselves. The sky was dark and I By Neil Case thought the air felt like rain would start soon. I was watching the dogs and I was considering different subjects for my next newspaper article.
It was quiet. There was no wind, no rustling of leaves. No insects buzzed. No birds sang, and I thought about that line in “Silent Spring,” the book by Rachel Carson. Should I write about “Silent Spring,” the book, and about Rachel Carson, again? Should I write about the birds that would start flying back and forth to the bird feeders around our house as it got light, if it didn’t rain, and even if it did rain, if the rain was light? I’ve written about Rachel Carson and “Silent Spring,” more than once. I’ve written about all the birds that come to our bird feeders. I ticked them off in my
mind, black-capped chickadee, white-breasted nuthatch, tufted titmouse, downy woodpecker, cardinal, blue jay, mourning dove, ruby-throated hummingbird, hairy woodpecker. The dogs finished their business outside and followed me as I came back in the house. I went through the living room and the dining room, into the kitchen, got breakfast for the dogs and for myself, then returned to the dining room and sat down at the table to eat my breakfast and watch the birds as they began flying to the bird feeders outside the dining room window. Birds aren’t the only critters
A way to honor our veterans Veterans Day honors military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Some communities will host parades, others will host programs or offer free meals for veterans. ‘the PAPER’ wants to honor the veterans in our county in our Nov. 10 publication. We will be dedicating space to publish photos of these veterans and asking our readers to help by sending photos and information. We are asking readers to send us a photo, past or present, of a veteran in the family. Include the veteran’s name, military
branch and the years served. We are also asking those submitting the information to provide the county where they 52%(57 / )2; reside. 8 6 1$9< Photos and information can be emailed to dpatterson@the-papers.com, mailed to ‘the PAPER,’ P.O. that come to those feeders. I have also seen squirrels, both red and gray. I’ve seen raccoons and I’ve seen chipmunks. When I tire of watching the birds at the feeders outside the dining room window, I can move to my study and watch the birds coming to the feeder outside the window there, beyond my desk and computer. In the field across the road from my home, which I see through my study window, I saw two deer a few days ago, an adult and a spotted little one, a fawn. I often see deer in that field. I had a deer run into my car once. I was driving on a country road and the deer jumped out of the ditch beside the road and into the side of my car, right by the driver’s window. It didn’t break the window but it broke off the outside rearview mirror on that side of the car. Should I write about some other mammal, a rabbit or a woodchuck, a field mouse or rat or muskrat, a beaver or mink, a fox or a skunk? Should I write about all the dead animals I see along the roads? I see more dead
woodchucks than live ones. I’m a dedicated bird watcher, a birder, as everybody who knows me is well aware. I’ve written many articles about birds, but I’ve written many articles about other subjects also. Consider the heading of my newspaper column, Outdoor Notes. Anything outdoors is a possible subject for one of my articles. Birds and bees, flowers and trees, other plants, I’ve had considerable experience with some plants, poison ivy and stinging nettles, mammals, amphibians, snakes, fish, weather. I was an early believer in global warming and I wrote I was. It turned out there were quite a few people who didn’t believe in global warming when I wrote about it and many disbelievers let me know they disagreed with me. “Everybody talks about the weather,” Dad said often, “but nobody does anything about it.” Dad was wrong. Cars and trucks, motor vehicles, add carbon dioxide to the air when they’re running so everybody who drives adds carbon dioxide to the air and affects air quality.

ENTERTAINMENT Five Medals at The Trace; a living history experience Where do you get to experience British, Colonial and French military sites, a Potawatomi Native encampment, cannon and muskets firing and 18th century artisans and shopping opportunities, all in one location? Five Medals at The Trace, of course. Give your family a day they’ll always remember. Provide your home schoolers a one-of-a-kind history lesson they’ll never forget. Five Medals is a living history educational experience geared toward your entire family, allowing all to become totally immersed in this area’s exceptional history. The event spans from the middle 1600s up through the War of 1812. Five Medals at The Trace fea-
tures more than 150 reenactors and demonstrators, including one-of-a-kind shopping opportunities with early American merchants, live Colonial music, blacksmithing, tinsmithing, woodworking, open-fire cooking and baking, soap making, jewelry, natural fabric dyeing, spinning and wool carding, basket weaving, pottery and even working dogs, all ongoing throughout the event. And if that’s not enough, explore log cabins and feel your chest pound during the black powder flintlock and artillery demonstrations. Interact with participants in the encampments of woodland natives, French civilians and military, British military and Colonial/ U.S. military.
This year’s Five Medals at The Trace takes place from Saturday, Oct. 23, through Sunday, Oct. 24 (with Friday, Oct. 22, earmarked as school day). The event is held at Stone’s Trace, a privately-owned historical park located just south of Ligonier, at the intersection of US 33 and SR 5. You’ll appreciate the exquisite fall colors and woodlandsto-grasslands transition areas, as well as log cabins and even Richard Stone’s 1839 tavern. Along with holiday shopping opportunities and early American crafts galore, visitors will find several great food options, along with restroom facilities and generous parking. Five Medals at The Trace is presented by Five Medals Living

Bowhunters asked to collect wildlife information The Archer’s Index is a survey that relies on volunteer archery hunters to report wildlife observations while they are afield in the fall. Sightings are collected from Oct. 1 through Nov. 12. These observations help DNR understand how populations of wildlife such as white-tailed deer, opossums, and coyotes are changing over time. Bowhunters interested in supporting this long-running effort to inform wildlife management can sign up to volunteer at www.in.gov/

The hours archery hunters spend sitting quietly provide great opportunities to see a variety of wildlife. cats and white-tailed deer. The Archer’s Index does not count animals or provide population estimates. It provides trends by calculating observations per 1,000 hours afield. For instance, one year archery hunters might report seeing 752 deer for every 1,000 hours they spent hunting. DNR can compare this to information from other years to see if more, less or the same amount of deer are being seen in the same amount of hunt hours to track deer trends. This effort also provides other valuable data like fawn-to-doe and buck-to-doe ratios to help manage white-tailed deer populations. Observations are generally collected from Oct. 1 to the day before firearms season opens. Volunteers can hunt any number of days during that time; there is no minimum number of days hunted required. Forms and instructions will be mailed to volunteers either in late September or within three to five business days of signing up during October and early November. For more information go to www.in.gov/dnr/fish-and-wildlife/wildlife-resources/archersindex/.

National Do Something Nice Day %\ 0(/,66$ &+$30$1 :&3/ &DWDORJLQJ 6XSHUYLVRU It can be easy to focus on the negative parts of your day or fixate on a rude comment somebody made to you, but Oct. 5, National Do Something Nice Day is here to remind you it’s not all dreadful. Of course, we should be doing nice things for others every day without having to think about it. With busy and difficult lives, we often forget to slow down and show kindness and appreciation to others. This is certainly the case for many people in their daily interactions with strangers. For example, think about the last time you were at the store. Did you thank the clerk who rang up your groceries? If you did thank them, did you address them by name? It might not seem like much, but small gestures of genuine appreciation can really

make someone else’s day. What can you do to celebrate on this day? Volunteer; get involved in a local organization in your community. If you’re having trouble deciding how or where to volunteer, consider what your strongest skills are and how you can use them to help others. Assist a stranger, extend a small gesture of kindness to let a stranger know you care. Pay the bill of the person behind you in line at the coffee shop. If you see someone crying alone in public, offer them a tissue or, if the situation calls for it, some other kind of support. Call someone to tell them you care, if you know someone who is going through a hard time in life, gently check in with them and let them know they’re on your mind. If you can swing it, send them a bouquet or drop off a homemade meal. Your personalized attention can make a world

of difference. National Do Something Nice Day can also help you as a person. Research has repeatedly found helping others helps you, too. Giving back to your community or doing a good deed lights up your brain’s pleasure center and can prompt a rush of feel-good chemicals. Also doing a small good deed is a great way to remind ourselves we can make a difference. It’s easy to feel helpless in the face of the world’s many troubles, but every single one of us can make at least a small impact on someone else’s life. That is an incredible feeling.
