%\ %/$,5 %$80*$571(5 6WDII :ULWHU Talk about a one-in-a-million story. Over the 4th of July weekend Diana Rockey was watching the flotilla boat parade from her home on Lake Tippecanoe. She was standing out on her pier with her family watching the boat parade when someone threw a T-shirt to them from one of the boats. They were trying to decide who would fetch the T-shirt and she was the only person wearing a bathing suit, so she was chosen. She just happened to be wearing her mother’s gold ring her mother had given to her nine days prior. She jumped in to fetch the T-shirt and to her dread, when she arose from the water, noticed it was gone. “I had only had it for nine days. I was literally sick to my stomach. My parents divorced over 40 years ago and I had been asking my mom for that gold wedding band for the past 40 years. I recently went to visit her in Missouri and she finally decided I could have it. I literally felt like maybe this was the universe telling me that I should not have this ring,” she said. “I was ready to give up trying to find it, but my daughter was absolutely determined to find it. She started snorkeling near where I lost my ring, but it was nowhere to be found. She decided to call a dive shop in Elkhart and finally came in contact with Lamar Chupp, a diver from Bristol,” said Rockey. After 1 1/2 hours Chupp found the ring. “It was a unique situation,” he said. “It was a little weedy. It was almost too good to be true. I don’t expect it to happen again in my lifetime. I’m just glad to be a part of it and see the joy on their faces. That’s really what makes it all worth it. Bringing people joy in that way is so much greater than money.” When he arose from the water, he asked Rockey if she knew anyone who had lost a class ring. Not readily knowing anyone who lost their ring, she saw it was a Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger class of 1972 class ring and decided to post the question on the “Friends of Lake Tippecanoe” Facebook page. Searching the high school’s website, she came across a Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger class of 1972 50-year reunion, which was approaching soon. She contacted the reunion organizer, Shibb Neddeff, and asked if he knew anyone with the initials “MDU.” As it turned out, Neddeff knew exactly whose initials were on the ring. He had been good friends with Mike Usina of St. Augustine, Fla., and had kept in touch over the years. At the same time, another gentleman from

Florida who specializes in finding missing classs rings and other mementos contacted Rockey viaa d Facebook. He found Usina’s Facebook page and dlet Rockey know his identity. She then proceeded to reach out to Usina. They met in Fort Wayne, and after 50 yearss Usina finally recovered his ring. “I received a d Facebook message from a total stranger and k didn’t think anything of it. I decided to check it after a couple days and was asked if I lostt umy high school class ring, and replied, ‘Actually, yes I did,’” said Usina. “My reaction was a little bit like winning the lotto — I wrote off thee n ring years ago and chalked it up to a life lesson about not wearing any jewelry while I waterski. I vividly remember waterskiing on that dayy over 50 years ago and coming back to the boat without my ring,” he said. “The ring was in amazing condition, which is a credit to nature and the pureness of the water in Lake Tippecanoe. Finding the ring is significant, but making these new friendships is a huge bonus. Our class was also unified by the story when I showed them the ring at lour reunion. The Mega Millions just hit $1 billion. Guess who’s getting a ticket to build on thiss momentum? This was like winning the lottery.”

Teen finds way to make dreams come true %\ 0$<$ 6721( )UHHODQFH :ULWHU Max Stone is a 14-year-old superstar. After years of brainstorming plans to make his own money and picking up side hobbies, he finally found not one but two jobs to make his dreams come true. Stone wants to be able to buy his own purchases but is most passionate about buying an old truck he can fix up and one day call his own. Along with participating in all the busy events in his life — including hours of band practice, soccer, wrestling, track and bowling — he has a part-time job fixing lawn mowers. His responsibilities are to fix and clean lawn mowers customers bring in.

Stone works on all four-cylinder motors, which are most riding mowers and push motors, but does not do any two-cylinder motors. He replaces anything that is wrong with the motor deck and even the body of the machine. A lot of customers bring in machines that haven’t been cleaned in a long time, so he also cleans their deck motor and body if they need it. Stone sharpens blades on the mowers and replaces them if needed, along with replacing fuel filters if they have gone bad and oil if it’s needed. He works on a lot of carburetors on the engine of the mower and even goes above and beyond every time to clean them, although some do not need it because if the carburetor is dirty the mower won’t

Ministerial association declaring Aug. 13 Day of Prayer for children The Greater Warsaw Ministerial Association has set Saturday, Aug. 13, as a Day of Prayer for children in Kosciusko County. Stone has had his eye on this job for several years now and has spoken to the owner of the alley many times on when he can be hired. So it came as no surprise that when he was old enough they hired him. His duties at the bowling alley are running the game counter, taking orders for food, cleaning the games in the arcade, cleaning counters and tables and anything asked of him. He enjoys the job because it allows him to still be a part of the sport he loves so much. On top of all the craziness, Stone always finds time to spend with his family and friends. “I wouldn’t be able to achieve any of my goals without my family encouraging me to go for it and helping drive me everywhere I need to be,” Stone said. He loves to be part of the happiness that a fixed mower brings to people’s faces or how much kids light up when they win a prize at the arcade. He hopes to be able to make enough money soon to purchase his truck and begin learning how to fix it with his new knowledge of fixing engines.

Surprising hidden artist – John Mellencamp %\ '$5/$ 0&&$0021 DQG '$5/(1( 520$12 John Mellencamp is a Grammywinning musician, singer and songwriter known for his catchy brand of heartland rock. Did you know he is also a respected painter? We are going to explore his painting style and philosophy this week. John Mellencamp was born Oct. 7, 1951, in Seymour. By the age of 10, he was experimenting with oil paints. His painting took a back seat as his music career skyrocketed him to stardom in the ’80s. In 1988 he joined the Arts Students League of New York and had his first formal training with portrait painter David Leffel, who taught him the technique of painting dark to light. Mellencamp is of German ancestry and said it was significant to him when he discovered the work of German expressionist artists Otto Dix and Max Beckmann, as they greatly influenced his style. When asked why he paints, Mellencamp stated he has ideas in him he has to express and they come out in the form of making music, writing songs or painting. He is down to earth and isn’t an artist who feels the need to tie his work to a deep philosophical meaning as some artists do, instead letting his work speak for itself. Portraiture makes up the bulk of his artwork,

and the influence from Dix and Beckmann is obvious in his melancholy and slightly haunting style. His subjects present an introspective expression that is left open to interpretation by the viewer. When asked about his inspiration for his work, Mellencamp said his head is full of ideas that manifest themselves through his songs, lyrics or paintings. In an Artist Talk facilitated by the director of the Deland Museum of Art in Florida, Mellencamp made the comment he will never live up to his full potential as a human being in this lifetime with the talent he has been given. He said he will never create a painting or write a song that is as good as he thinks it should be. This doesn’t mean he lacks confidence; in fact, it’s quite the opposite. It means he is always striving for improvement, looking for ways to make changes to advance his work. He said he can find things in every one of his finished paintings that he would change, and his words are inspiring to all artists who think their work isn’t good enough to exhibit. During the pandemic, Mellencamp had a lot of time on his hands since he wasn’t touring, and created three interesting self-portraits that are worth exploring. Mellencamp has a dour expression on his face, the color palette is mostly neutral brown and this portrait has a somewhat abstract background. All three self-portraits are meritorious on their own but it’s interesting to compare the different styles because it speaks to Mellencamp’s ability to interpret the same thing differently, which is a sign of a great artist.

Warsaw resident Lenora Stump named August Veteran of the Month %\ /($+ 6$1'(5 ,QN)UHH1HZV U.S. Army veteran Lenora R. Stump of Warsaw is the August Kosciusko County Veteran of the Month. Stump was recognized at the Kosciusko County Commissioners’ meeting Tuesday, Aug. 2. She’s the fourth female veteran to receive the designation. Kosciusko County Veteran Service Officer Darryl McDowell presented her with a certificate and read biographical information on her, including the following: Stump was born April 7, 1935, to Emery and Violet Murphy, just south of Atwood. She graduated with the Class of 1953 from Atwood High School. On Jan. 28, 1955, Stump joined the Army and headed to Indianapolis, before doing basic training at Fort McClellan in Alabama. She then went to quartermaster

school at Fort Lee in Virginia. Stump first worked at the Pentagon in the office of the commissary. She extended her enlistment to go to Germany. She was stationed at the Army base in Heidelberg, Germany, as a supply clerk and lived in the Patton Barracks. While there, she met fellow soldier Robert Woodard. They married on Nov. 13, 1956, at the German consulate. Stump reenlisted again after their marriage. On July 25, 1957, Stump was honorably discharged from the Army after becoming pregnant with the couple’s first child. She lived in Germany until spring 1958 as a dependent. Stump then moved back to Kosciusko County. She eventually met Robert Stump, and the two married in 1962. She first became involved with the American Legion in 1998 at

the Menzie-Reece American Legion Post 258 in Pierceton. She was auxiliary president there. Stump later transferred to American Legion Post 49 in Warsaw, where she served as commander from 2005-06. She also is a VFW James W. Sittler Post 1126 of Warsaw life member. “I’m speechless,” said Stump after being honored. “I’m very appreciative of it and thank everyone for being here for this day. And I love all of you.” Her two grandsons attended the recognition.

Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture recently announced the winners of the 2022 Indiana Agriculture photo contest. The winning photographs will be displayed in the lieutenant governor’s Family of Business offices in Indianapolis. “Each year toward the end of June, I eagerly anticipate reviewing the hundreds of beautiful photos submitted for the Indiana Agriculture photo contest,” said Crouch, Indiana’s secretary of agriculture and rural development. “The photos selected as winners represent Hoosier traditions and agriculture so well. I want to give my greatest congratulations to the 10 selected winners for sharing their talent with us.” The winning photos were chosen from hundreds of entries in the following four categories: Agritourism, Conservation, Faces of Agriculture and On the Farm. Two winners were selected from each category, along with two winners overall. To be considered, the photo had to be taken in the state by an In-

diana resident. Chamber celebrates temporary bike lane in downtown Warsaw %\ /($+ 6$1'(5 ,QN)UHH1HZV A step toward making the Warsaw-Winona Lake area better connected was celebrated on Tuesday, Aug. 2. The Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce had a ribbon-cutting for a new temporary bike lane that has been set up on two blocks along West Market Street, from Columbia to Lake streets, in downtown Warsaw. Flower pots, traffic sticks and markings were set up last week to create a lane in an effort to gauge whether the public would be comfortable with a permanent bike lane being set up there. Fred Helfrich, who serves on Warsaw-Winona Lake’s Ride Walk Advisory Committee and helped create the temporary lane, noted it will be out for about two months.

“It’s a buffer space for cyclists and pedestrians away from traffic,” said Helfrich. “This is sort of an experiment to see how do we … get the cyclists safely through the downtown in a space they’re comfortable with.” The goal is to have one continuous bike path from Chinworth Bridge west of Warsaw to Christ’s Covenant Church in Winona Lake. “This brings it out to the public so they can understand how it works, how traffic patterns might differ a bit, accommodate folks to get through to get into our downtown to get to the parks, to get to the schools and to get to our farmers market and to enjoy our downtown, to connect Winona with Warsaw to go from one end to the other,” said Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer. Thallemer noted if the per-

manent route is finished, no parking will be lost downtown because of it. “We will not be eliminating any parking,” he said. “Temporarily, it may look like it with this, but the way the thing’s designed, all parking remains. Richard Kuhn Jr., resident of Leesburg, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2022, at the age of 78. Richard was born Oct. 25, 1943, the son of Richard and Doris Kuhn. On Oct. 6, 1963, he married Lithia Bays. A family man, Richard was a doting and sup- 5,&+$5' .8+1 portive grandfather; he loved to spend time with -5 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a private man, but he will always be fondly remembered as a father and grandfather who supported his family. Richard is survived by his five children, Lisa (Dan) Cory, Ron (Anita) Kuhn, Richard Kuhn III, Linda Reynold and Rick Kuhn; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters, Marlene Dills and Sandy Mayhaim. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lithia; infant daughter, Rhonda Kuhn; grandson, Thomas Scott; and brothers, Allen Kuhn and Floyd Schaaf. Randy married Brenda on Nov. 3, 1984. For many years, he worked as an electrician for 5$1'< ( Pell’s Electric before changing careers to work for Wa1(:0$1 bash Welding Service as a welder for over 30 years. A hard worker and perfectionist, Randy was the family’s go-to handyman. He loved wrestling and working in his yard and garden. Most of all, Randy loved spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. Randy will be missed by his children, Kimberly (Steven) Hively and Keith (Veronica) Gidley; grandchildren, Aaron (Erin Bowersox) Simpson, Breanna Gidley, Kari (Jacob Myers) Simpson and Brandon (Selena Townsend) Hughes; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary (Jason) Jacques; and sister-in-law, Teresa Newman. K21 Health Foundation to sponsor Lost Sparrows conference The K21 Health Foundation recently announced the awarding of a grant for $20,000 to the Lost Sparrows trauma conference. The event will provide trauma-informed education to local foster and adoptive families, teachers and community members. “We are consistently inspired by the work that Lost Sparrows is doing directly in our community and around the world to help children and families thrive,” says Rich Haddad, president and CEO of K21 Health Foundation. “It’s a privilege to support them to equip people with information and resources about the effects of trauma through this conference in our community.” Advocating for the worth and potential of every child, Lost Sparrows works to empower and equip families, caregivers and communities to love, nurture and protect vulnerable children. Lost Sparrows offers programs that educate and advocate for the orphan crisis, as well as resources for families and children in need. Through their education program, Lost Sparrows has trained more than 2,400 families on trauma care. “Partnering with K21 enables us to continue providing lifechanging education for those who care for individuals affected by trauma,” said Lost Sparrows President Darren Gagnon. “We’re incredibly thankful for K21’s support and for their continuous efforts to better the health and wellness of our community.” The trauma conference will be held on Oct. 14-15 at Grace College in Winona Lake. The conference will feature breakout sessions, panel discussions and keynote sessions with knowledgeable speakers, including George Dennehy, Gaelin Elmore and Bryan Post.
