KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR Kosciusko County native enjoys serving the community %\ 3+2(%( 087+$57 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU Growing up in Kosciusko County, Christina Morehouse enjoyed the country life and helping her parents tend to a garden. To this day, she enjoys the same life she grew up experiencing. She is a member of the Echoes the Past along with her husband, David, and they live in Silver Lake. Morehouse grew up in Kosciusko County and was born and raised in Warsaw. A 1983 Tippecanoe Valley High School graduate, she grew up a “country girl,” as she puts it, in Claypool. “We spent a lot of time outside,” she recalled fondly. “My dad had a large garden. Things were a lot more laid back, back

then. I remember going out in the blizzard of 1978 and traipsing through the snow.” While in high school, she played basketball and volleyball. She also played softball on a church league. She was also a member of the Vikettes, a dance group that played at football and basketball games. She got married, had a daughter, got remarried and the couple had a son, Rob. The couple have been married 25 years. They have been active in Boy Scouts and her son became an Eagle Scout. She was a den leader and the family went camping often. She moved away and came back to Kosciusko County in 1990. Morehouse calls her home in Silver Lake as being “on the outskirts of heaven.”

She is part of the Wheels on Fire Cancer Crusaders at Beaver Dam United Methodist Church. A fundraising group, it assists cancer patients in Fulton and Kosciusko counties. The group raises money for local cancer patients to help with medical expenses, transportation costs, and electric bills, among other things. A fundraiser and a silent auction, called Smash Out, will be Aug. 28, at the Akron Community Center. “I am seeking donations for the silent auction and for people to help serve food. I am a professional volunteer,” she joked. “My mom instilled that in me — to give back to the community.” Morehouse returned the favor by helping her mother when she was sick.

Her husband joined the organization a few years ago. “He collects old antique tools,” Morehouse said. “So, that is his passion. They asked him to display them at a club meeting and so he did.” The group’s mission is to “bring the echoes of the past to the voices of tomorrow.” The group takes part in plow days, local festivals, fairs and parades. “We are an antique farm equipment club,” she said. Morehouse joined the group six months ago. She is in charge of

publicity for the club. “I never realized how much they give back,” Morehouse said. “And you don’t have to be own a tractor to be a member.” During Kosciusko County Fair Week, the club will have a tractor-driving experience and will be making homemade ice cream, among other activities. “We actively raise funds throughout the year to support them through our local 4-H clubs and FFA chapters,” she said. About two weeks ago, I started working at a company that pays fairly well. You do have to work to earn your money. What I am most amazed about is how many don’t care about the quality of their work. They want to do the bare minimum for great pay. Do you realize the quality of work shows in the product? Consumers won’t buy it if it isn’t quality work and everyone is out of a job. Think about your pride. Take pride in your work. If you are not able or don’t want to work harder, then ﬁnd a different job. It is so sad to see this going on. Help others when you have time. People are shocked when I help others. I don’t do it to get ahead, but because I want to treat others as I want to be treated. Quit complaining, take pride in yourself and do the job.

Mint plants — Can someone please provide a thought on how to keep peppermint/spearmint plants from becoming invasive in the garden? Is there a way to keep it contained and can winterover safely? Indiana has 20 state parks, almost half of them within a twohour drive of Kosciusko County. Some offer camping and water activities, and all bring the traveler back to the land and its furry, feathered, and scaled inhabitants. Indiana Dunes National Park, 15,000 acres which was designated as the nation’s 61st national park in February 2019, includes 15 miles of shoreline for public use and 50 miles of trails over dunes, wetlands, prairies, rivers, and forests. It can also be reached from here within a couple of hours. We have a lovely picture book in children’s services that tells the story of a family who starts from their home near us and takes a trip to ﬁve major national parks around the country. Jane, the daughter, had made plans that included her iPad, her friends, and a lot of indoor time. You’ll have to read it to see how the trip affected her. The parks covered include the Everglades in Florida, Big Bend in Texas, Arizona’s Grand Canyon, Yellowstone in Wyoming, and Yosemite in California. The journey must have been quite an undertaking. “Our Great Big Backyard” was written by former First Lady Laura Bush and her daughter Jenna Bush Hager, and illustrated by Jacqueline Rogers. The team currently has 20 members. “We do a lot of our games during the spring and summer,” Cissna said. “We will play with just about anyone who asks. We do a lot of traveling. The farthest we’ve traveled was to Mackinaw, Mich., to compete in a tournament and Kentucky to play against the Black and Blue Gems.” Other honorable mentions the team has played against are the Fort Wayne Derby Brats, Kalamazoo Killer Beez, Darlings of Destruction, Indianapolis Junior Roller Derby, and Motown Junior Roller Derby. “The team plays ﬁve or six games a season,” Cissna said. The team helps children in many ways. This sport helps children to build conﬁdence and have high self esteem. The roller derby team also helps children let out pent-up frustration. It also helps them to “get out there and be active,” Cissna said. “We’ve watched kids build friendships and bond,” Cissna

said. “It helps children get out for their comfort zone.” The older players help the younger skaters, Cissna said. The team practices from 10 a.m. to noon Sundays, at Eastlake Skating Rink in Warsaw. The practices are two hours long. Play is broken up into two, 30-minute periods, and within those periods into units of play called “jams,” which last up to two minutes. During a jam, each team ﬁelds up to ﬁve skaters. Four of these skaters are called “blockers” (“blockers” are called the “pack”), and one is called a “jammer.” “If we have a game coming up, we work on strategies before a game,” she said. “After a game, we focus on other skills.” Cissna said now that she is 18, she will continue playing with a South Bend roller derby team. “I plan on playing with the adult team. Altrusa hosting bus trip to Michigan Altrusa International of Warsaw members are sponsoring a one-day bus trip Aug. 24, to Berrien Springs, Mich. What shall I write about? Another week and I need to write another newspaper article, something about the outdoors as all my articles are. What should I write about this week? The chipmunk that was on the platform bird feeder outside the window by the dining room table when I sat down inside to eat breakfast one morning recently. It fled when it saw me, jumping onto the feeder post, scurrying down the post and plunging into a hole in the ground. Minutes later a fox squirrel climbed to the feeder, then a red squirrel. I was thinking about my next article and considered writing about the chipmunk or one of the squirrels. I could write about one of the birds flying to and from the feeder, black-capped chickadee, white-breasted nuthatch, downy or red-bellied woodpecker, cardinal or blue jay, house sparrow, goldfinch. I don’t remember writing about a chipmunk, but I’ve written about squirrels and all those birds, many of them several times. I could write about red-winged blackbirds, which were also coming to the feeder and were calling loudly from the marsh out by our pasture. I see and heard redwing much of the year whenever I went outdoors. I could write about the killdeer I heard when I’d gone outside with our dogs before sitting down to breakfast, or the great blue heron I’d seen fly over. I started to write a weekly newspaper article many years ago. I started by asking the editor of the local newspaper in the town near where I lived for advice. He read some short stories I’d written about the out of doors, then told me if I’d submit an article to him once a week he’d revise it, print it and pay me so I’d feel obligated.

Don’t just write about birds, my editor friend advised. “Write about all outdoors.” After some thought, he suggested the title for my articles, Outdoor Notes. I could write about a bird, of course, or a mammal or other animal, or a plant. I could write about some experience I had outdoors. I could write about the weather, particularly severe weather. I’ve experienced the most severe weather. I was a boy, home, and so were Mother and Dad and my brother when our house was severely damaged by a tornado. I’ve been on a ship at sea in hurricanes and typhoons. I experienced the hurricanes and typhoons on ships at sea while serving in the Navy. I could write about the clouds, and I have, towering white cumulus clouds, gray stratus clouds, nimbus clouds which often bring rain. I could write about, and have written about, global warming. In summer, when my brother and I lived and worked on farms, after the chores were done in the evening, we used to climb to the top of a haystack and look to the clouds, imagining different shapes. I could write in response to somebody who has written to me. For example, I recently received a question, by email and with a picture, asking the name of a red bird. It wasn’t a cardinal or a scarlet tanager. It was redstart, which is a warbler. I could write about warblers. I could write about and give a personal account of seeing many families of birds. I’ve been to Midway Island, again while in the Navy, and seen the albatrosses that spend their lives over or on the ocean except when they go to land to nest. Midway is now a refuge, but when I was in the Navy, it was a refueling station for Navy ships and there was an air base. We Navy men who saw the albatrosses called them gooney birds because of how awkward they appeared when they set down on land. They often ﬂipped when their feet touched land and did a somersault. So what should I write about this week?

Junior Leaders honor 4-H members, volunteers with memorial garden %\ /$85(1 =(8*1(5 6WDII :ULWHU After wandering the fairgrounds, enjoying the animals, rides and food, take a few moments to visit the memorial garden. The memorial garden, located near Young McDonald’s Farm, is a project by the 4-H Junior Leaders program. Junior Leader members have been busy doing routine maintenance on the garden, removing leaves, putting down fresh mulch and pulling out memorials that have been in storage. Michelle LeCount, junior leader advisor, explained the garden was dedicated in 1993. It was started when two 4-H members were killed in an accident in

landscaped and a bench installed, expanding the garden. LeCount said the types of memorials in the garden vary. Some are planed while others are engraved stones or something that reﬂects the personality of the 4-H’er or 4-H volunteer being honored.

Rhodes, his wife, Amber, and their four daughters and sonin-law run this family business. They enjoy making their own rubs and sauces. Syracuse Chamber wins award, executive director completes course Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce announced its Executive Director Renea Salyer recently completed the American Citizen Planner course and exam through the Purdue Extension Foundation. The course work began March 1 and was successfully completed June 23. The curriculum is designed to empower people to build better places. The American Citizen Planner course provides extensive education and training to Indiana citizen planners who serve or plan to serve on area or advisory planning commissions. This unique program featured 28 units of online content that detailed coreplanning theories, practices and processes. Salyer intends to use the education to further goals of the Syracuse community.
