There are several ways individuals, families and businesses can honor veterans this Memorial Day:

%\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU They “gave their last full measure of devotion” in wars and conflicts across the centuries, and veterans groups around the nation are determined to perpetuate the respect and honor they deserve this Memorial Day. The living faithful place no expiration date on the annual ritual of planting or replacing flags and markers on veterans’ graves. “The willingness of America’s veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude,” said former U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller of Florida.

The flags are a poignant and fitting reminder that, as an anonymous author wrote, “our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.”

Many communities include commemoration of fallen firefighters and law enforcement officers.

American Legion Post 253, 756 S. Main St., North Webster, will put up “a

couple hundred” flags at four cemeteries and will conduct honor guard rifle salutes at each location on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, according to the post’s adjutant, Mark Hazelet.

The Memorial Day ceremonies will take place at the following times: • 9 a.m., Thorn Cemetery • 9:30 a.m., Salem Cemetery • 10 a.m., Mock Cemetery • 10:30 a.m., over the channel behind the post to commemorate those lost at sea.

The post will participate in the 11 a.m. town parade and raise the American flag at noon, after which the post will host a free community hot dog cookout.

The public is invited to attend all the above Memorial Day events.

Post Commander Larry Burkhart said, “Every year we stand and read off at least 50 names of members we lost in the previous year. We will read 57 this year.”

When it comes to jobs, Brandon Allen might be considered somewhat of an expert. He has worked different careers his whole life, having had his first job at only 14 years old.

Today, he is the new manager for the Goodwill Career Center in Warsaw.

Allen grew up in Monticello and fondly remembers visiting his grandparents, who lived across the street from Indiana Beach. The Ferris wheel was in plan view, he noted.

Allen started working when he was a teenager. He worked at a fast food chain restaurant and became its manager at only 20 years old. After graduating from high school in 2001, he put college on hold, he said, and had several jobs one of which was at a seed company.

“I helped created databases for seed varieties, and did some tech support,” he recalled. He worked in its research and development office for 10 years.

Eventually, he decided to go back into the classroom to study business administration. He started at Ivy Tech College and then went to Indiana University School of Journalism before they closed that specific school down in Indianapolis to earn a journalism degree, and he also received a minor in political science. He graduated in 2011.

Allen moved back to Monticello, did some travelling and he lived in Florida for awhile.

Allen soon realized, “I was good at planning a restaurant.” So, with his savvy skills, he said, “We added delivery services within eight miles, and we increased our market base.”

He moved to Sidney three years ago. He moved to Kosciusko County to “seek new opportunities.”

“I wanted to have some roots,” he said. He helped raise his niece, who lives with him, and she used the Goodwill Career Center to find a job.

“That’s when I first became aware of this place,” Allen said, while sitting in his office at Goodwill.

But then the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020, Allen had to quarantine for seven months due to a medical condition.

“I was told I’d die if I get it,” he recalled. “After the quarantine, I decided to apply for jobs, and I came across this one.”

As the career center manager, he primarily uses his business management and human resources skills to help others find a job.

The career assistance is all free.

“I like to keep up with the current trends,” said the former newspaper reporter. “Lots of people are looking for work.”

Plant and animal signs of spring It’s spring and every day is a few minutes longer than the day before. The difference in day length isn’t noticeable from one day to the next, but it is from one week to the next.

There are many other differences, however.

There’s a difference in the color outside. Gone is the drab of winter.

Green is now the dominate color.

Leaves color the trees and bushes.

Grass colors the ground of lawns and

other open areas that are mowed.

Wildflowers add spots of color, of white and yellow, red and orange and blue. Early blooming white flowers are spring beauty, May apple, trout lily and trillium, lady’s slipper, hepatica, bloodroot, trailing arbutus, harbinger of spring, bastard toadflax (love that name), Dutchman’s breaches, daisy fleabane and many more.

Early yellow flowers are common dandelion, an introduced species from Europe, marsh marigold, several violets, wakerobin and trailing arbutus, black-eyed Susan and spring beauty. Violets are common blue blossoms and skunk cabbage is green spotted with dark purplish brown.

Animals are a different story than

plants. Most of most common animals, mammals, rabbits, squirrels, foxes, deer are active, out and about, except when the weather is most wintry. Beaver are an exception. They hole up in the lodges they’ve made of mud and sticks. But they come out to feed, on the wood of sections of trees they cut with their chisel-like teeth and anchored under water.

Another exception, and a famous one, is the woodchuck or ground hog or whistle pig. It hibernates in a den, which is a system of tunnels and chambers. Those dens always have two entrances, sometimes more, and are 4-5 feet deep with 25-30 feet of tunnels. How active woodchucks are in their dens is not known, but woodchucks are famous for coming out of their dens one day in March, a spe-

Lilly Center hires former student as research technician The Lilly Center for Lakes and Streams has hired a former student as a full-time research technician.

The Lilly Center has welcomed Jed Harvey back to the team, but this time as a full-time staff member.

Harvey worked on the Lilly Center student research team for four years, while he earned his bachelor’s in chemistry and environmental science from Grace College. After graduation, he worked for Element Labs in Fort Wayne. Harvey recently returned to the Lilly Center as the full-time research technician.

“I’m excited to develop this position as well as my own skillset as a researcher,” said Harvey. “I hope to bring a unique perspective to the Lilly Center’s research team, and through working with the students and other staff, I know the Lilly Center can grow in its role as a scientific resource in this community.”

In his new position, Harvey will monitor the daily operations of the research program and student team and help collect and record lake and stream data. He will also work extensively in the Lilly Center’s lab,

Male red-winged blackbirds are like robins, early indicators of spring when I was a boy, now coming to the bird feeders around my home all winter. Now redwings are abundant around the marsh out by our pasture and there’s been a female at one of my feeders.

Warblers are late spring migrants and they are favorite birds of mine. I look for warblers whenever I am out in spring, summer and fall. I haven’t seen a warbler yet this year.

But I expect to any day now, a yellow warbler or a yellow-rumped warbler or a common yellowthroat, a black and white warbler or a blackpoll or a redstart or a non-warbler like warbler, a Northern or Louisiana waterthrush or an ovenbird.

Clean Waters Partnership hosting nature play days The Clean Waters Partnership was created to protect local waterways and create a watershed management plan for the area in 2016.

A large portion of this plan involves engaging the community in fun and educational events to learn more about lakes and streams. The education committee is a collaboration of the Kosciusko Soil and Water Conservation District, Lilly Center for Lakes and Streams, The Watershed Foundation, and Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation. This year, CWP is teaming up with the Indiana Children and Nature Network to

host a series of nature play days.

ICAN is encouraging groups across the state to make a special effort to get kids outside by holding nature play day events. These will be from June 5 to 13. These events are designed to be handson, outdoors, and with the goal of connecting children to the wonders of nature though unstructured play. CWP is providing four opportunities to participate in a play day this year.

I SPY, a fun time at the WACF’s nature trails, is from 10 a.m. to noon June 8. Children through fifth grade and accompanying adults are welcome. Come explore

the nature trails by playing an I SPY game. Who can spot everything on the list? There will be crafts to complete, too. Register for this free event at pam@wacf. com by June 5. Come and go between 10 a.m. to noon at WACF, 11586 SR 13, Syracuse.

The woodlands expedition interpretive hike begins at 10 a.m.

June 9, at the trailhead on Boys City Drive, Winona Lake. Bring the whole family for a fun morning exploring nature. The expedition will be led by Luke Hunt, a certified master naturalist and long-time guide for Lilly Center’s nature walks. He is a retired science teacher who loves sharing his vast knowledge with others.

Expedition participants will learn about woodland and wetland ecosystems, native plants, wildlife habitats and more. Weather-

appropriate clothing, close-toed shoes, and insect repellent is recommended. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Visit lakes.grace.edu for more information.

Children-friendly tools for exploring nature is from 10 a.m. to noon June 10. What do nets, binoculars, soil probes, viewers, magnifying glasses, field guides and nature journals have in common? They are all tools for exploring nature. Come join Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District staff and investigate the woods, pond, prairie, and wetland ecosystems at Wildwood Nature Preserve, 409 E. SR 14, Silver Lake. Come and go as you please between 10 a.m. to noon.

Weather-appropriate clothing for exploring outdoors and close-toed shoes are recommended. Children

must be accompanied by an adult.

Milford Family Fun Fest set for May 29 %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Milford Family Fun Fest, an all-day event featuring free rides, classic car cruise-in, garage sales, vending and more, will run from noon to 8 p.m.

Formerly titled simply “Milford Fest,” the 2021 event is being organized by Beer and Jessop Amusements after Milford Lions Club canceled as a result

of COVID-related scheduling problems. BAJA, a Milfordbased company, has provided rides and vending for the event since 2008.

“People are ready to get back to normal,” said organizer Tom Beer. “There’s been an outpouring of support from individuals, not just corporations … We’re going to make it happen.”

Beer related a conversation where someone compared Milford Fest to “Milford’s Hallmark

movie for one day of the year.”

And while Milford Family Fun Fest 2021 will not feature Lions-sponsored events of years past, such as the cutie contest, Beer said attendees can expect the same wide array of free rides BAJA has made available in previous years. An addition to this year’s line-up is the Indiana National Guard, which requisitioned a rock wall.

The following is a list of Milford Family Fun Fest events;

From May 27-31, town-wide garage sales will be taking place around Milford. Maps of participating locations will be available starting at 1 p.m. May 26, at Town Hall, 121 S. Main St. The following events all take place Saturday, May 29: From 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.,

Milford Kiwanis sausage and pancake breakfast will be in the community building, 111 S. Main St. Dine-in or carry-out available.

Teeing up against cancer at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club Kosciusko County Cancer Care Fund, a local fundraising committee under the K21 Health Foundation, will be hosting its annual Golf Charity Fundraising event at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club June 14.

Teams will have the opportunity to tee off via shotgun start at 8 a.m. or 1 p.m. All funds raised through this event will go directly to reducing the financial challenges facing local Kosciusko County cancer patients and their families. “As a committee it’s been our mission to help ‘soften’ the financial burden for patients while they fight this terrible disease,” said Jeff Wells, CCF Fundraising Committee chair.

Event attendees and businesses will experience a day of fun on the links while making a difference for local cancer patients thanks to their team entry fee donation. The event will feature multiple hole-in-one challenges for chances to win a car or a trip, as well as a chance to hit the green with a one-of-akind golf ball cannon. It will be a day to support local patients

and families, raise some muchneeded funds and honor the lives of those who have been lost.

“I feel like everyone, including myself, has a personal story that has intersected with cancer.

Almost everyone I meet has a friend, family or colleague that has been affected by cancer in some way. It’s really great to be able to help make a difference and our committee feels incredibly passionate and dedicated to these families,” said Luke Baker, CCF Golf Committee chair.

Last year, the CCF Golf Charity Fundraising event raised nearly $30,000 of the total $197,828 the CCF raised to help support 113 Kosciusko County cancer patients. During the past 20 years, well over $2 million has been raised by the CCF to help the people of Kosciusko County as they fight their cancer battles.

Candidates sought for fair queen pageant Kosciusko County Fair is seeking candidates to participate in the annual Miss Kosciusko County Fair Queen Pageant.

It is open to females, ages 1321, who live in or go to school in Kosciusko County or bordering counties. The pageant will be comprised of two age divisions including teen (13-17) and miss (18-21). Contestants are not required to be a member of 4-H and there is no talent or swimsuit competition.

With more than 65 years of history, the title of Miss Kosciusko County Fair Queen is a very prestigious achievement including scholarships awarded to the queen and her court. Each contestant will compete in four categories including: interview, evening gown/on-stage question, professional wear, and a oneminute prepared speech on any topic of her choosing. The 2021 Miss Kosciusko County Fair Queen will also participate in the 2022 Indiana State Fair Queen Pageant.

The Town of Syracuse, Indiana is seeking a Town Manager that will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Town, including those activities directed by the Town Council. The Manager is appointed and would be responsible to the town council.

As provided for under state statue, the Town Manager is responsible for the following: 1. Conduct duties in accordance with Indiana statutes and the direction of the Council.

• Administer all ordinances, orders, and resolutions adopted by the Town Council. Carry out policies adopted by the elected body.

• Prepare monthly reports for the Council with the assistance of each Department Head and other staff as needed to apprise the Town into the status of current operations and other business.

• Recommend service and policy updates to the Council for action and implementation.

• Oversee and manage property and assets.

3. Manage Town Staff to maintain efficiency • Direct supervisory authority over Town employees.

• Delegate authority when applicable to appropriate staff members.

• Coordinate with the head of each department to set and monitor attainable goals.

• Coordinate with the head of each department to create and maintain planning documents, maintenance schedules, annual budgets, staffing needs, and general management assistance.

• Assist the Council to hire, evaluate, promote and discipline employees.

4. Public Relations • Investigate questions and complaints from the public with the Town Attorney and other resources as needed regarding the enforcement of Town Ordinances.

• Maintain contact with Business Owners and citizens on behalf of the Town Council.

• Act as the liaison with state and federal government, local civic and business entities, and interested members of the public.

• Facilitate the flow and understanding of ideas and information between and among elected officials, employees and citizens.

5. Infrastructure Development • Work with the consultants (Engineer fi ms, Contractors) regarding the oversight of construction projects.

• Oversee contracts on behalf of the Town.

• Plans for short-term and long-term financing or capital projects.

6. Planning and Compliance • Assist the Council to develop and maintain the Town’s Comprehensive Plan.

• Keep the Town Council apprised of developments at the state and federal level that impact the Town as well as monitor pending legislation and compliance with new legislation.

7. Grants • Research, prepare and apply for grant opportunities including but not limited to Federal or State Grants.

• Administer grants and programs to support the Town’s strategic plan and long-term goals.

8. Economic Development • Assist the Town Council and Redevelopment Commission to improve and implement the town’s economic development plan, establish goals and implement strategies that benefits the community.

9. Purchasing • Assist the Council to develop and implement a long-term capital plan that schedules needed purchases from year to year.

10. Budgeting • Prepare a comprehensive annual operating budget and capital improvement plan.

• Provide budget estimates for projects and assists the Clerk-Treasurer with preparation of the annual budget.

In addition to these duties, the Town Manager also responds to citizen requests for service or information, and acts as a liaison with other federal, state, & local governmental agencies. Other duties maybe assigned from time to time.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: • Experience as a supervisor. Experience in local government management a plus.

• Working knowledge of sewer operations, water operations, road maintenance, and infrastructure problems is a plus.

• Computer skills preferred include a background in MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel; Adobe PDF file creation; and website management software is a plus.

• Ability to speak in public, and experience with making public presentations.

• Ability to communicate professionally both verbally and in writing.

• Good organizational skills.

• Experience with personnel conflict resolution.

• Working knowledge of grants and funding opportunities is a plus.

• Possess a valid driver’s license.

• Not be a convicted of a felony.

• Practice good hygiene.

• Be Dependable.

• Live in or close to the Town corporate boundary.

Then, in 2020, the event was cancelled due to COVID-19. In addition to the cars, trucks and motorcycles, there will be vending, 50-50 drawings and live music.

American Legion Cruise-In continues a Syracuse tradition Syracuse American Legion Post 223 Cruise-In will take place from 5-8 p.m. May 28, at 1008 S. Huntington St. Cars, trucks and motorcycles are all welcome, said organizer Randy Rinker. “As long as the weather is good, we expect there will be a good turnout,” he added.

The cruise-in is a “family event,” explained Mindy Howard, Legion bar manager, featuring “food, music and fun.” Hot dogs, chips and beverages will also be available. Beez and the Rocker will provide live music from 5-8 p.m., and a 50-50 drawing will be held. Tickets are $1

apiece or six for $5.

The access road will be closed between the access road entrance at Burke’s motorcycle shop and Lynwood Drive and officials will be present to direct traffic and park participants’ vehicles.

Proceeds from the drawing will help fund the legion’s efforts on behalf of the community, said Rinker, who helped form the Syracuse Legion Riders in 2020. There are currently around 25 members. Sign-up information for the legion riders and other legion organizations will also be available at the cruise-in.

Rinker and other car enthusiasts from Post 223 decided to keep the tradition of the cruise-in alive in 2019 after Wawasee Kiwanis Club discontinued its sponsorship of the Cruizin’ Cuse Car Show. Unfortunately, the event then had to be cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19.

“We wanted to get it going and keep it going,” said Rinker, whose ‘54 Chevy, along with his wife’s Corvette, has been in past cruise-ins.

“It’s a chance for people to meet and talk with each other,” he observed. “It’s a really good thing for the community.”

Veterans roll call, ceremony June 4 Kosciusko Honor And Remember has been given the additional challenge by a private donor to conduct a roll call for all living World War II veterans currently residing in Kosciusko County. “Celebrating America’s Veterans” will be June 4, during First Friday where veterans who have served honorably in the military since May 8, 1975, are going to be honored.

“A private donor asked that we compile a list of how many World War II veterans are still living in Kosciusko County,” noted Ken

Locke, a member of Kosciusko Honor And Remember.

The First Friday events will begin at 5 p.m. June 4, in downtown Warsaw with the Lake Area Community Band presenting a concert at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony celebrating veterans and the roll call will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Kosciusko County SWCD receives cost-share The Clean Water Indiana Program (IC 14-32-8) was established to provide financial assistance to landowners and conservation groups. Through education, technical assistance, training and costsharing programs, the program supports the implementation of conservation practices which will reduce nonpoint sources of water pollution.

The CWI fund is administered by the Indiana State Department of Agriculture Division of Soil Conservation under the direction of the State Soil Conservation Board. The fund is derived from a portion of cigarette tax funds. (IC 6-7-1-29.3) The cigarette tax fund is 4.22 percent of total cigarette tax revenue and the CWI fund receives one sixth of this amount. The CWI Program is responsible for providing local matching funds as well as grants for sediment and nutrient reduction projects. The 2021 competitive grant cycle received 29 proposals, 13 of which received funding, totaling $969,651.

Kosciusko County Soil & Water Conservation District partnered with three neighboring counties, Whitley, Wabash and Huntington, to apply for cost-share funds through the CWI program. This collaboration resulted in the obtaining cost-share funds to be used in the Upper Middle Eel River Watershed. This grant began January 2021 and will end in December 2023.

Data from water quality monitoring in 2016-2018 identified three critical areas in the Upper Middle Eel River Watershed: Hurricane Creek, Pony Creek and Sugar

Creek. Impairments within these critical areas include excess nutrients, sediment and E. coli.

Identified causes of excessive nitrogen and phosphorus have been identified as tile drainage, erosion, fertilizer and manure run-off, animal feed operations and wetland loss. The goal of this grant is to address the impairments within our critical areas, by funding Best Management Practices. Hurricane Creek Watershed is located just south of Sidney. It roughly stretches from highway 13 to 105 in Whitley County. See attached map.

The BMP’s that will be funded are cover crops, grassed waterways and filter strips. The cap for cost-share on filter strips will be $282/acre. Grassed waterways will be covered at a rate of $8,000/ acre with a cap of 1 acre/producer. Cover crop payments are set at $20/acre with a cap of 100 acres/producer/year. Cost-share rates were finalized at the steering committee meeting in March of 2021.

If you own or operate land within this area, Kosciusko County SWCD will be taking applications on an ongoing basis.

Funds will be allocated as project applications are approved. There are no guarantee funds will last all three years. Preference will be given to first time applications, however if you have applied for these programs before, you are still eligible. Apply today.

SWCD welcomes Tashina Lahr-Manifold SWCD is excited to announce an addition to our team, Tashina Lahr-Manifold, who will fill the position of conservation program technician.

SWCD is excited about the skill set Tashina brings to the job. She has a bachelor’s degree of science in environmental studies and a minor in natural history from Manchester University. While attending

Manchester, Tashina was a park ranger at Salamonie Reservoir for the Army Corps of Engineers.

The last four years, she held the position of executive director for Wabash County Soil & Water Conservation District. As a result, Tashina has extensive experience with conservation practices, working with Continued on page 2

by Luke Hunt, a certified master naturalist and long-time guide for Lilly Center nature walks. Luke is a retired science teacher who loves sharing his vast knowledge with others.

They are all tools for exploring nature. Come join Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District staff and investigate the woods, pond, prairie and wetland ecosystems at beautiful Wildwood Nature Preserve, 409 E. SR 14, Silver Lake.

June 21 — 7-8:30 p.m.: The Clean Waters Partnership is planning a native pollinator plant workshop at the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation Center to give homeowners tips on how to establish a pollinator garden.

Participants will receive a pollinator plant six-pack that will cover a 10-foot square area.

June 26-Aug. 7 — The Smithsonian Water/ Ways Exhibit will be featured at the North Webster Community Public Library in partnership with The Watershed Foundation. Some of her major responsibilities will be reviewing Rule 5 erosion control plans, assisting with grant implementation, field checks through agreements with federal partners, landfill inspections and serving on the county technical advisory committee.

Tashina moved to Warsaw five years ago and lives near Chapman Lake on a small hobby farm. She and her husband Herb and their daughter Mckenna all enjoy spending time outdoors on the farm and on the lake.

Jamie Scott recognized as Hoosier Resilience Hero Jamie Scott, a Kosciusko County farmer and vice chairman of the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District board, was recently named a Hoosier Resilience Hero by Indiana University’s Environmental Resilience Institute.

As an early adopter of agricultural practices that promote soil health and water quality, Scott has helped showcase the benefits of sustainable farming methods that sequester carbon and lower the environmental impact of farming. On his farm, Scott regularly hosts workshops and field days demonstrating the benefits of cover crops, no-till planting, pollinator habitats, permanent vegetation and other practices. He has opened his fields for soil health studies and welcomed local college students interested in ecology and land use.

For 20 years, Scott has helped organize the aerial seeding of cover crops on approximately 100,000 acres in northern Indiana and southern Michigan.

In addition to promoting regenerative methods, he is well known for his role in agricultural policy and leadership at the local, state and national levels. A former president of the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation District, he has advocated for conservation policies at the state and federal levels.

Hoosier Resilience Heroes are individuals and groups committed to ensuring a safe, healthy environment for their families, neighbors and future generations.

This year’s cohort includes professionals and volunteers dedicated to sustainable agriculture, clean energy development, environmental justice and other aspects of environmental protection and resilience.

“From farms, to suburbs, to urban neighborhoods, everywhere you look you find people working to make Indiana a healthier, more environmentally sustainable place to live,” said ERI Director Janet McCabe. “Our heroes are leading the charge against ongoing threats to our state, such as climate change and longterm social and environmental inequities.

We applaud their efforts and are inspired by their contributions to our state.”

Wildlife food plot seed now available Wildlife food plot seed has arrived and is available at the Kosciusko County SWCD office at 217 E. Bell Drive, Warsaw.

This free seed is provided to landowners who would like to plant the seed as a food source for wildlife during the fall and winter months, when most food supplies are limited.

The district has corn, sorghum and sunflower seed. Some limits are placed on quantities to allow more landowners the opportunity to plant this food source.

A food plot is an annual or perennial planting of grain, legumes and/or forbs. It is planted in the spring and left standing through the winter for wildlife. A food plot offers wildlife a place to forage for food in late fall, winter and early spring, as food sources become scarce.

To be effective, a food plot should be at least 1,000 square feet. No more than 1/4 to 1/2 acre of food plot is usually needed for each 20 acres of land. If the food plot is expected to provide winter cover, then plots of an acre or more are necessary.

Food plots are usually planted in long strips adjacent to good winter and/or escape cover such as a brushy fencerow, field border, windbreak, woodland edge or wetland. Strip width can vary, but the wider the strips, the more food and cover created for wildlife. The closer the food plot is to good dense cover, the more use it will have by wildlife.

SWCD Annual Tree Sale Conservation calendar a tree-mendous success Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District Annual Tree Sale has once again come to an end. It was a huge success for the district, with more than 8,500 trees being sold.

As with most events in the past year and a half, tree pick-up looked a little different this year. Instead of a walk-in pickup, participants were directed into a drive-through service. By the end of pick-up day, the warehouse was looking very sparse. Some of the most popular species this year were American arborvitae and sugar maple. These species along with many others sold out more than a week before tree pick-up day.

One thing that did not look different this year was the community’s unwavering ssupport. From the volu unteers who helped p package and distribu ute the trees, to the ccommunity members w who purchased trees, tthis event would not bbe possible without tthis support. The S SWCD would like to tthank each of these ccommunity members.

A Additionally, a huge tthank-you is due to S Seymour Midwest for p providing the warehouse space used to host the event. Seymour Midwest is truly the most welcoming host the district could hope for and its support does not go unappreciated.

While it seems very far away at this point, the 2022 tree sale will be here before we know it. The district will begin taking orders as early as January. The earlier you get your order in, the better chance you will have at getting the species you want. So, mark your calendars. As with this year, the sale will include a variety of species of evergreen and deciduous trees, as well as some species of ground cover and daylilies.

SWCD’s Kosciusko-In-A-Box a hit at Earth Day Festival On May 1, the Wawasee area and surrounding communities came together to celebrate Earth Day at the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation’s Earth Day Festival. The event consisted of a wide variety of activity tents, including live raptors, an opportunity to create a butterfly net and a wide variety of educational displays showing how to better care for our planet.

Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District took part in the event with its Kosciusko-In-A-Box display. This display depicts a miniature version of several of the resources found in Kosciusko County in striking detail. Everything from lakes, streams, forests, farm fields, a landfill, an area park and so much more are depicted in the display. Along with these resources, there are many conservation techniques found throughout the display. Some of these include rocks used for shoreline stabilization, cover crops and rotational grazing of cattle.

Perhaps the most popular part of the Kosciusko-In-A-Box display was the scaven-

ger hunt. Participants were asked to search for several items throughout the neighborhoods in the display. Some of these items were much harder to find than others. Possibly the hardest being the tiny deer and fishermen hidden in the woods. Only those with an especially sharp eye were able to find all the clues quickly, but everyone had a great time searching.

In addition to the Kosciusko-In-A-Box display, the SWCD also gave away blue spruce saplings to anyone who stopped by their tent. These tiny saplings will eventually grow to be up to 75 feet tall and make wonderful wind brakes. Additionally, they have a beautiful blue tint to them and smell like Christmas all year round.

The SWCD would like to thank the volunteers who came and helped with their booth, as well as all the participants who made the rest of the event possible. Additionally, a huge thank you goes out to the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation for hosting the event and to the community for taking part.

Hoosier Riverwatch training at North Webster Clean, abundant water is a valuable resource for all Hoosiers. Whether as a source for drinking water, water for business and industry or for recreation, it is irreplaceable.

The stewardship of our water resources is the responsibility of us all. One way to be a good steward is to become a Hoosier Riverwatch trained monitor.

The next local Hoosier Riverwatch workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (EST) Thursday, July 1, at the North Webster Community Center, 301 N. Main St. It is being sponsored by The Watershed Foundation and the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District.

The training is for anyone interested in learning about water quality and gaining hands-on experience in monitoring rivers and streams. People interested in the environment, especially educators, are encouraged to attend. The workshop will provide general education in water quality issues and hands-on training in monitoring the health of rivers and streams through physical, chemical and biological testing. The training is free, but class size is limited. Per-

sons interested in participating must make a prior reservation.

After completion of the training, volunteers can perform stream testing for a wide variety of possible pollutants. They can then submit their data to a statewide volunteer monitoring database that makes the information available to anyone.

Hoosier Riverwatch, sponsored by IDEM, is a statewide education program that focuses on local rivers and streams stewardship. The Riverwatch monitoring program fits easily into elementary, middle and high school classes, including biology, chemistry, math, language arts and social studies. It is also useful for citizens interested in learning more about water quality and being an active participant in statewide monitoring efforts.
