It’s a Miracle!
possibly having a semipro baseball team play at the facility during the summer months.
Craig Wallin knew he was bucking long odds, so he christened his brainchild endeavor with a name that cemented his resolve and will soon result in a fruition that lives up to that name: The Elkhart County Miracle.
The Miracle, a Northern League semipro baseball team, kicks off its season 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, at the NorthWood Field of Dreams Complex on the campus of NorthWood High School in Nappanee versus the Lake County Corn Dogs.
Former Chicago Cub and 2016 World Series MVP Ben Zobrist will throw out the first pitch Saturday, June 3, for the team’s grand opening game. The team will play 55 games this summer, including 30 home games.
“The initial thought came to mind when I was broadcasting for the South Bend White Sox,” said Wallin, president and founder of The Elkhart County Miracle. “I was the first broadcaster for the White Sox and traveled with the team.”
Wallin said that many times the White Sox would play in communities that were smaller than Elkhart County. He thought that if he simply had a few years, he could bring a team to Elkhart County, but it was not that easy.
Wallin had friends and colleagues who shared his vision. At one point, they had an architectural rendering of a 10,000-seat retractable roof minor league baseball facility. They thought the facility could also house a pro soccer team, community events and concerts.
If they could make the baseball facility become a reality, their vision was to fill it up with events at least 150 days per year. The pieces of their plan just never quite came together. Wallin said they were very close to having a team compete in the Northern League in 2014. Then he received a last minute call that the league was folding.
After many years of dreaming and planning, Wallin was doing the play-by-play for a NorthWood High School baseball game during the 2022 season. NorthWood athletic director Roman Smith talked about a new baseball facility called “The NorthWood Field of Dreams Complex” that would be constructed near the school. Smith said the school was interested in
A light went on in Wallin’s head. Wallin and his friend Ron Bedward, who is now the director of marketing for the team, started discussing with Smith what it would actually look like if they could put together a team to play at the facility.
They started talking with Don Popravak, president of the Northern League, to figure out how they could put together a new team for the league. Popravak knew of Wallin’s dream to bring a team to Elkhart County and had been following Wallin’s story for 15
years.
With the help of an 11-member corporate team, that dream is becoming a reality. The team has worked extremely hard to make their dream come true. The initial squad consists of about 25% local prospects and 75% collegiate and minor league prospects from other states. Wallin’s son, Tyler, is also part of the corporate team. Tyler is a former collegiate baseball player.
Former Notre Dame baseball/football player Evan Sharpley, who is the team’s director of baseball operations, worked hard putting together a squad of talented, high-character young men who love the game of baseball. Wallin said, “We’ve really got some high-character guys who can really play. They’re all gems.”
Wallin wants this team to embody the local community. “I want to encourage fans to start looking for miracles. If you start looking for miracles each day, you might be surprised what happens,” he said.
He emphasized they want the fans to be “celebrated, not tolerated.” The team envisions a wholesome, affordable, down-to-earth family atmosphere where people can enjoy good baseball and make lasting memories with their family and friends.
Wallin said there are so many people who shared his dream of bringing a team to

to their main needs and those of the Spanish-speaking community they are targeting.”
“I remember when my twin brother Arturo and I were traveling from Chile to the United States to attend Grace College in Winona Lake,” said Lucas Fonseca.
“We landed about an hour away from our destination. When we arrived in the small town, everything was so different from our medium-sized city in Chile. I still remember that feeling of being an outsider as I reach out to others who feel lost.”
That’s part of the reason I started my business, Language Matters, to equip other Spanishspeakers to function and thrive in this country.” The business is located in Warsaw.
Fonseca majored in entrepreneurial management with a minor in Spanish. “Although Spanish is my native language,
He marks the stages of arrival in a new country. “The first is the honeymoon stage, where everything is beautiful. Then there’s a crisis stage, where nothing is working. Often there’s a language barrier, and the person no longer knows how to adapt to their new surroundings. For some, this language barrier can last years, or even a lifetime.”
His business provides professional services to individuals who want to better connect with people who speak a different language. “This includes language tutoring; we also offer translation of documents and written materials to Spanish or French.”
The second area he focuses on is equipping organizations. “We start by analyzing the company or city by collecting data. Then we develop solutions that cater
April 23 marked the day when the company first offered their new English digital course, available on Smartphones and laptops. They unveiled the app at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Warsaw. “I’m excited to be able to combine technology and education. We are providing this app to 150 people who will have access to an entire year of language lessons.”
Part of his job involves meetings in cities across the United States. “I visit companies who are considering partnering with us. One of those organizations is the Greater Fort Wayne YMCA; we’ve launched an exciting initiative with them related to our online course.
“We also have people on the waiting list for access to our app. Because of companies like the YMCA, our partners make it possible to serve more people.”
Fonseca is also busy traveling to conferences. “I’m always learning and traveling gives me the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals.”
Some advice he’d give other entrepreneurs: “Get started on something right away: flyers, business cards, anything. Recognize that nobody is going to do the work for you. You may receive some help, but you’ve got to put in the hard work and long hours to succeed.”
Today, Fonseca feels like somewhat of an outsider when he goes to visit his family in Chile.
“I’ve adopted a lot of idioms from the U.S. After a meal, when Mom asks if I want seconds, I’ll respond that I’m full. She’ll correct me, because in Chilean culture, that’s not a great way to word things: ‘You mean you are satisfied.’”
Fonseca’s wife, Bethany, writes bilingual children’s books. His email address: l.fonseca@languagemattersprogram.com.

Discover the wonders of cork fabric at Nappanee’s newest shop
April 28 marked the grand opening of The Cork Emporium, at 105 S. Main St., Nappanee’s newest downtown shop. This unique store is for eco-conscious fashion enthusiasts and creative artisans alike.
Owned by Lynn Gerard, The Cork Emporium specializes in offering a diverse range of thread, cloth and ornate accessories crafted from an environmentally friendly and versatile material: cork fabric.
Derived primarily from the bark of the cork oak tree, this high-quality fabric is sourced from Spain, Portugal and France, regions known for their abundant cork oak forests. One notable aspect of cork fabric is its sustainability.
“They have to wait until the trees are about 25 years old. They pull the bark off and let it sit for six months to let it dry,” said Gerard. The bark of the cork oak tree can be harvested without causing harm to the tree itself, allowing it to regrow and be reharvested every nine
Letter to the editor
Agrees too much emphasis on sports
Dear Editor, I am elated to read the letter submitted by Dave Baumgartner on the emphasis on sports in our schools.
I have felt for many years we need to reprioritize our thinking so we see more students thinking about scholastics rather than sports for their futures.

to 12 years. This unique quality makes cork fabric a renewable and eco-friendly resource, perfect for today’s increasingly environmentally conscious world.
Cork fabric carries a myriad benefits and unique characteristics.
Cork fabric has a similar handle to leather or vinyl, but it’s much easier to cut and sew with. It feels like a quality leather because it’s soft, smooth and pliable. It can be used to make handmade bags, wallets, accents on clothing, craft projects, applique, embroidery, shoes or upholstery. Some of these you can find at The Cork Emporium, some made by Gerard herself.
Cork fabric is not only renewable and sustainable but also lightweight, water-resistant, stain resistant, antimicrobial and hypoallergenic.
“I sell bag hardware, zippers and the finished product,” said Gerard. She also offers sewing classes.
Its natural texture and appearance, coupled with its versatility, allow for a plethora of innovative designs and fashion-forward creations. The Cork Emporium, in particular, showcases a selection of cork fabric items, offering customers a taste of what cork fabrics have to offer.
As the world embraces ecofriendly alternatives, cork fabric has emerged as a front runner in
the realm of sustainable textiles. It’s not only an ethical choice for fashion and design enthusiasts but also a durable and long-lasting option.
To commemorate the grand opening of The Cork Emporium, Lynn Gerard invites the public to explore the world of cork fabric at her store. Discover this unique material and get inspired to create your own masterpieces, all while contributing to a more sustainable future. Don’t miss out on The Cork Emporium in downtown Nappanee. APC gives favorable recommendation for Claypool TIF district on May 3
A tax increment finance district for a small portion of Claypool was given a favorable recommendation at the regular meeting of the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission Wednesday, May 3.
Indiana American Water requested the TIF district for three parcels plus existing water pipes. All three parcels are zoned public use. The property is the site of the town’s water tower.
The acquisition of Claypool’s water system was approved by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission Wednesday, Feb. 22.
Claypool Town Council will hear the case at 7 p.m. Monday, May 15.
Edd Allen’s petition for an appeal was continued once again.
The case has been continued since January. Last month, the board requested a traffic data, which has been completed.
Allen is requesting to amend self-imposed restrictive covenants associated to the rezoning request to originally rezone the property in question to commercial, as amended through previous cases, by allowing modular homes sales and display as shown on the submitted site plan.
The property is located on the west side of SR 13, south of CR 400 North in Tippecanoe Township.
“The traffic study was not exactly favorable,” said Allen’s attorney, Steve Snyder.
“There are certain concerns,” added Mike Kissinger, an APC board member.
The traffic engineer did state

Elkhart County and some of them are no longer with us. There are really too many people to name, but they were all instrumental in this miracle.
He mentioned former Coveleski Stadium manager and one-time Baseball America’s Executive of the Year, John Baxter, as being an integral part of making this dream come true. Baxter is part of the executive team. Northern Indiana Area Director of Fellowship of Christian Athletes Josh Gleason will be the team’s chaplain. Wilson Valera, a onetime minor
league baseball player and former member of the Arizona Diamondback’s coaching staff, will manage the team.
All weekday home games start at 7 p.m. Saturday home games begin at 6 p.m. and Sunday home games start at 2 p.m. The NorthWood Field of Dreams Complex is located at 2101 N. Main St., Nappanee.

that visibility to the north is impaired for drivers due to a stop sign and a hill.
The case was continued until Wednesday, June 7, in order to review the recent traffic study.
Thomas Hardy’s petition was approved. Hardy is seeking preliminary plat approval for an agricultural II subdivision on a 3.27 acre tract of ground. The property is located on the west side of CR 700 East in Jackson Township and is a two-lot subdivision.
Blake Palmer’s petition to rezone ground from a commercial district to a residential district was granted a favorable recommendation.
The property is located on the south side of Main Street, west of Harrison Street in Atwood in Harrison Township.
Palmer’s property consists of three platted lots. The property is a former cafe. Palmer wants it to become a house. A realtor that Palmer is working with suggested it be rezoned. She shared some statistics regarding the housing market, noting there is “a need for housing.”
“I want to make the property better and more marketable,” Palmer said. “I put a new roof on it two years ago.”
Palmer has also filed for a variance, which the Board of Zoning Appeals will hear next week.
The county commissioners will hear the case at 9 a.m. Tuesday, May 23.
David Miller’s petition to rezone ground from a residential district to an agricultural district near Silver Lake was given a favorable recommendation by the board. The property is located on the south side of Sycamore, just east of Jefferson Street in Lake Township.
A letter from the town stated there was no issue with Miller’s request. Miller purchased the property in December. He wants to build a garage but was told he could not yet due to a zoning issue. The county commissioners will hear the case at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, May 23.
A final plat for Summer Breeze, near Oswego, was approved. A house is going to be constructed on one lot.
The next meeting is 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at the county courthouse, Warsaw.

Harwood named 2023 Wawasee Flotilla Commodore
Heather Harwood, a lifetime area resident and executive director of the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation, will lead this year’s Lake Wawasee Flotilla activities celebrating the theme “Luau on the Lake.”
The 2023 Wawasee Flotilla will start at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 1.
Harwood grew up in Goshen where her father was a Presbyterian minister. She spent her summers, along with brother George Hardie, swimming, skiing, sailing and developing a lifelong appreciation for the natural beauty of the lakes.
After college she became a “California Girl” and for 12 years lived in southern California where she became a landscape architect at a firm where she met her husband Hamilton. While in California, they welcomed their daughter Molly, who now resides in San Francisco.
Heather, Hamilton and Molly returned to Kosciusko County and moved to Syracuse Lake as she became executive director of the WACF, a post she has held for 25 years.
Under Harwood’s leadership, the WACF has grown to a professional organization which holds approximately 1,000 acres
in the Wawasee Watershed, taking action to ensure the lakes’ health and vitality now and for generations to come.
Harwood also operates a highly successful landscape architecture business with a focus on landscape architectural design, native habitat restoration, site drainage and erosion control, land planning, graphics and computer aided design.
She has completed the Master Gardener training from Purdue University and has worked to enhance the beauty and sustainability of countless local lake properties.
She is a lover of the lakes and can be seen skiing in the early
Hello, blueberries
This is the time of the year we begin to see blueberries pop up at our favorite local markets. During the summer, there is nothing quite like a big bowl of fresh fruit.
In fact, blueberries alone pack many antioxidants, making them one of the healthiest fruits to consume. They are also rich in vitamins such as vitamin C and vitamin K to help protect against damage to molecules and cells within the body.
Additionally, blueberries can be a great source for your daily magnesium and fiber intake. While being very low in calories, blueberries also help promote bone strength and lower your risk of heart disease.
Earlier studies discovered that blueberries (compared to other fruits) do not make your blood sugar spike, which is especially important for individuals with health conditions such as insulin resistance.
While most of us can agree that sometimes eating plain fruits and vegetables can be boring, there are ways to spice up your blueberry recipes while still remaining healthy.
If you are someone who purchases blueberries in large quantities, you can freeze them for later use.
Recipes can range all the way from a blueberry smoothie to mixing them into your oatmeal or salads.
Blueberries can be as versatile as you make them. You can enjoy what you are eating while consuming something nutritious for your body.
morning hours or enjoying a hike at one of the many properties of the WACF. She still works closely with her brother and mentor George as a partner in art, landscaping and restoration.
Harwood has also served on the Merry Lea Environmental Center board of directors, the Indiana Lakes Management Society and is a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Council of Landscape Architecture Registration Boards.
The Wawasee Flotilla Parade will launch at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 1, starting in front of the Wawasee Spink and moving counterclockwise around the lake. Registration is required to be eligible for an award/prize (no charge).
Registration forms will be available at local retailers, Team Tuttle Mortgage LLC or call (574) 457-3775 or email hollytuttle@yahoo.com.
Souvenir T-shirts and sweatshirts will be available online at flotilla.orderpromos.com.
The Flotilla Road Race will be held Tuesday, July 4, at Lakeside Park, Syracuse. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the race starts at 8 a.m.

Commissioners recognize Warsaw student for attaining Gold Award
A Warsaw girl has been recognized by Kosciusko County Commissioners for achieving the highest award in Girl Scouts.
At its meeting Tuesday, April 25, the commissioners honored Keely Roe for getting a Gold Award, equivalent to the Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouts.
For her Gold Award project, Roe, a Warsaw Community High School senior, created a patch other Girl Scouts can earn by educating others about breast health.
Roe told InkFreeNews others from across the country had worked to obtain the patch. She also placed educational brochures about breast health in the county.
Roe collaborated with medical professionals for the project.
During her time in Girls Scouts, Roe, who’s been in troops 10379 and 10380, also received the following awards: 10-year member
award; Gold Torch Award; GoldSilver Torch Award; Silver Torch Award; Senior and Ambassador Safety awards; Community Service bars for Cadette, Senior and Ambassador levels; Service to Girl Scouting bars for Senior and Ambassador levels; five Journey awards; nine cookie sale pins; and 48 badges while at the Cadette, Senior and Ambassador levels.
She’s the daughter of Terrence and Lori Roe. When Roe graduates this spring, she’ll have Ivy Tech Community College pharmacy technician and dementia care certificates, along with her Core 40 academic and technical honors diploma. She will attend Butler University as part of its honors college program and study biology on a pre-medicine track.
Roe is the WCHS student body president and has been involved in National Honor Society, the speech and debate team, Phi Theta Kappa, Kosciusko County Teen Court and the Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy
Board of Directors.
Commissioners presented Roe with a certificate, and President Brad Jackson read a statement.
“Over the course of your years in Girl Scouts, you have learned
many qualities that have helped you and shaped you into a strong leader and a helpful citizen to your community,” it said in part.
“Our hope for the future is that you continue to learn and grow
and lead with integrity.”
Present at the meeting was Suzie Light, who served as Roe’s Gold Award project advisor. Light said this is the first time a Girl

Lake Wawasee: “Points of Interest” historical cruise

vided along with a cash bar.

Along with the popular putting contest, there will be a
longest drive, longest putt and hole-in-one contests and, of course, Bucket Holes.
Net proceeds from this event enable the chambers to provide college scholarships for area students through the NorthWood Scholarship Foundation and free-to-the-community events throughout the year.

Patricia Ann Leksich, 72, Bradenton, Fla., passed away on Dec. 9, 2022, in the presence of family.
Pat and Greg were residents of Syracuse for 20 years and the founders of Pat’s Chicago Dogs.
She was born in Vallejo, Calif., on Feb. 1, 1950, to Anna and Clarence Geisler, who preceded her in death, along with her sister, Peggy Braa; and daughter, Kimberly Harvey-Abela. We mourn the loss of our loved one while rejoicing in the knowledge that she is now home in heaven.
Pat leaves behind her husband of 53 years, Greg Leksich; her daughter, Susanne Rippey, with children, Bethany Wesley and Caleb Rippey; son, Joe Leksich, with children, Keaton and Makenzie, who reside in Indiana; Kimberly’s children, Andrew, Nick and Megan Harvey, who reside in Michigan; her sister, Laura Bara; and brother, John Geisler.
The most beautiful accomplishment of Pat’s life was the 53 years of marriage she shared with Greg. Their love for each other was evident in their daily loving acts of care for each other. Holding hands and playful banter started from day one and lasted until the end. They built a beautiful life based in faith while loving each other in heart and soul.

Beverly Meinert Farm Wife
Beverly Meinert, a devoted mother, caring grandmother, committed wife and a hardworking farm wife, passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at her residence. She was 81 years old.
Born on Aug. 5, 1941, Beverly attended Central Catholic High School in Fort Wayne. She was married to Aloysius R. Meinert, who most knew as “Al,” on Aug. 26, 1967 and shortly after the pair made their home on the farmstead north of Pierceton, where Beverly was living until the day she passed. Al and Beverly raised ducks for Maple Leaf Farms for more than 53 years. They were one of the first farm partners and one of the longest to work with Maple Leaf. Her dedication and commitment towards being a farm wife was unparalleled.
Beverly’s personality was feisty but she had a servant’s heart, willing to help friends and neighbors. She loved her family and grandchildren fiercely and was known to be a hard worker. Those who knew Beverly know that she had a strong faith in God as she was a devout Catholic; she was a long-time member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Pierceton and had previously attended Sacred Heart Church in Warsaw.
Beverly will be missed by several close friends and a large extended family. She is survived by two children: daughter, Laura Meinert-Bidel (companion, Peter Kelly) of North Webster and son, Kevin Meinert (wife, Brandie) of Kendallville; grandchildren, Bree Ann Jordan Bidle (boyfriend, Terrence Rose) of Brooklet, Ga., and Sofia Colbert, Brayden Colbert, Chloe Meinert and Jill Colbert, all of Kendallville. She is also survived by her siblings, Sadonna Muldoon of Fort Wayne, Berneice Denney of Fort Wayne and Elaine Hobbs of Dayton, Ohio.
She was preceded in passing by husband, Al Meinert; and by an infant granddaughter, Noel Meinert.
A life celebration visitation was held from 3-7 p.m. Monday, May 8, at Titus Funeral Home & Cremation Services of North Webster. A rosary service was led by Beverly’s family at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial took place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 9, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 408 W.
