This year’s plow days was at Parker Farms in Claypool, and 35 tractors participated by plowing and preparing 112 acres for planting. The Echoes of the Past has had plow days for more than 20 years. Spectators at this year’s spring plow days were treated to some very unique tractors. One spectator from Missouri had driven to Claypool to catch a glimpse of a John Deere Diesel 830. Another spectator from Peru had come to reminisce in the memories of the way farming used to be. There were several grandfathers and grandchildren combinations working the fields this year, as well as many father and son teams, passing on the knowledge of working with the antique equipment and spending quality time together. Echoes of the Past was established in 1994. In 2015, the club was incorporated
and became a nonprofit organization. The main purpose of the club is the preservation of agricultural equipment. Thames Goon, president of the club, said, “We believe that the best way to succeed in the future is to be educated in the past. By understanding how farming was done in the past, it can help future generations improve upon what generations before them have put in place to feed the growing world’s population.” Most fields today use the no-till method for planting, so the art of the old-fashioned plow is slowly becoming a thing of the past. “There are multiple reasons for this. I feel it’s got a lot to do with efficiencies, productivity, soil compaction and erosion, just to mention a few,” Goon said. The main reason, Goon added, for plow days is the opportunity for a lot of members to be able to work on older machinery and equipment. “It never fails for me that as I’m out plowing, I’ll reminisce about growing up

with my dad sitting on the fender of the tractor, giving a young man instructions as to what to do and what not to do. Believe you and me, somehow he always knew if I did something he told me not to do,” he laughed. “Besides that, for me, there is the smell of fresh-turned soil. It’s something you can’t explain, you have to experience it.” The club participates in many different community events. “We are having a few activities of our own this year. We are presently preparing for a tractor show at the Mentone Airport during the Egg Festival June 4-5. Other activities this year will be another tractor show and antique tractor pull Aug. 6-7, at an old, one-room schoolhouse east of Claypool. The club does fundraisers by making tractor-powered, homemade ice cream during the fair, First Fridays, and other functions. “With the money we raise, we help support the 4-H at the livestock auction along with FFA chapters in the
county,” Goon said. One of the activities offered at all functions is the tractor-driving experience. “We have a few members who have modified their tractors, so that both children and adults, of all ages, are able to actually drive a tractor with their supervision. This activity has become very popular with everyone,” Goon noted. He added, “Of course, we will have our display at the Kosciusko County Fair that everyone is invited to display their equipment at.” “We want everyone to understand that they don’t have to be a member to participate in, or show at any of our activities, including the fair. All we ask is for you to sit a spell and share stories of days gone by, if you would like. Memories are a wonderful part of our lives; sharing them always brings a smile to everyone’s faces,” he said. Find Echoes of the Past on Facebook or visit www.theechoesofthepast.com. The club’s next meeting will be at 4 p.m. June 5, at Mentone Airport.
