Old Jail Museum hosts new Vietnam War, Native American displays

The Old Jail Museum reopened Wednesday, March 1, after closing for the season and it has two new exciting displays, an updated website, a new logo and a new interactive kiosk.

The nonprofit Kosciusko County Historical Society was founded in 1966. The museum, run by the society, currently has a Vietnam War memorial display.

“One of our featured exhibits this season at the Old Jail Museum is a display honoring Vietnam era veterans. We have quite a few artifacts,” said Greg Steffe, the Old Jail Museum’s co-director. “Later this summer, we will have a program to highlight this.”

Steffe said a volunteer came up with the idea.

The Vietnam display will be available through the remainder of the year. “They were asked to serve their country. So they deserve to be honored,” said Steffe.

Steffe said there are dress uniforms from four of the military branches at the museum. A mannequin is dressed in combat gear, which the museum had to buy, as military members were not allowed to bring them home, said Steffe. The museum also has an honor roll listing some of the Vietnam veterans from the county.

The museum also has a display dedicated to Native Americans. “There were numerous reservations here in Kosciusko County,” said Steffe. These include the Miami and Potawatomi Indians.

In fact, Steffe said, his father and grandfather found Indian artifacts on their property near Atwood.

He said settlers and the Indians got along; however, some Native Americans, such as the Miami Indians, did not get along with other tribes.

The Indian artifacts will be on display until mid-December.

The genealogy discussion group will be visiting Hastings Village Tuesday, May 16. Hastings is located at the corner of CR 425W and CR 1050N, on the southwest corner of the junction of the Lee Beer Farm in Milford.

Beer has been relocating old buildings from the area to his property and restoring them to create a historical

village. This small village is located across the road from the original Hastings General Store, which served as the local store, post office and meeting place for early settlers. Other buildings from the past include a schoolhouse, log cabin, hardware store, a little white church, a hunter’s cabin complete with animal skins and a barbershop, which also served as a dentist’s office.

Steffe said the museum is working on a membership drive. Since Jan. 1, membership has grown from 250 to 413.

“We are currently offering a special for $25 per family,” said Steffe. “This membership is good through the end of 2024.”

In addition, a membership comes with six Thaddeus magazines. There are also opportunities to volunteer or get a private tour of the museum. A lifetime membership is $450.

The museum also has a new interactive kiosk. This year, the kiosk features Native Americans.

The historical society is also participating in the last soldier project. They are doing one in every county in Indiana, Steffe said. On Saturday, June 10, a ceremony will be conducted at Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.

As for the website, kosciuskohistory.com, “We are trying to get that updated,” said Steffe. The museum also has a genealogy room for those studying their family tree, said co-director Es-

ther Eickhoff. The museum’s hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Kosciusko County NEP coordinator addressing food insecurity in the county

ing trials and parks.

Back in 2008 the local grocery store in downtown Walkerton closed down because people shopped out of town.

Caroline Arnett, a native of Walkerton and the nutrition education coordinator for Purdue Extension Kosciusko County, soon realized the impact losing that grocery store had on the community.

“I started to realize how many people didn’t have cars or they were disabled or elderly. They used to walk to the store because it was right downtown.” She began to research what it would take to get a grocery store back in town and came across the term “food desert.” That grocery store closing down sparked a career for her in Extension.

During a chance meeting, she learned about the nutrition education program position. It was her dream job tackling the issue of food insecurity. Arnett explained the NEP is supported by a grant through USDA and supplemental nutrition education grants.

Her job is to work with audiences who have limited resources on matters such as food insecurity and finding affordable ways to exercise, such as using free pedestrian/walk-

Arnett came to Kosciusko County Extension in April 2022. At the time she spent a few months in LaPorte County finishing up a project there. She then traveled to Brazil and Bangladesh on mission trips.

As the NEP coordinator she works on the nuts and bolts issues of food insecurity. Another component of the program is free nutrition and cooking classes. “Our goal is how to get people nutritious food,” she said.

While in LaPorte County Arnett started a food rescue through area schools in LaPorte and Michigan City. She also worked with other nonprofits and opened food pantries in migrant neighborhoods. “I work on anything I can prove will give community members access to nutritious food,” she said.

In Kosciusko County, Arnett already has a number of projects in the books. She has been making contact with all the area pantries, learning about their resources. She’s been working with Goshen Health on a mobile garden. Kosciusko County Master Gardeners have also volunteered to teach some classes about gardening.

Arnett is also working with Live Well Kosciusko and she’d

like to establish a food insecurity task force.

She’s working to see where she can be plugged in to help address the issue of food insecurity with Kosciusko County’s five-year plan. “I’m pretty excited about that,”she said.

Local schools have also reached out about developing a school wellness plan; she’ll be assisting with the upper grades. She is also working with a local church that is working on installing a community garden.

“I love what I do because I get to do different things every day. And I get to impact people in a positive way.”

The food insecurity rate in the county is at 10.5% or about 8,000 people who feel they are not able to access food to lead a healthy life.

Arnett said those 8,000 are typically families with young children, the elderly and the disabled with key drivers being unemployment, poverty, income upset and lack of transportation.

In the last year she has found Kosciusko County to be incredibly welcoming with people she meets being willing to connect her with someone else in addressing food insecurity. And she still dreams of opening her own grocery store one day.

Sew Special Network plans

May 6 garage sale fundraiser

Sew Special Network of Northern Indiana Inc. will mark its one-year anniversary as a new Kosciusko County charity with a fundraiser.

The group is planning a combination garage sale/upscale resale event from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at 4108 E. Lakeview Trail, Leesburg, in the Stanton Lake Estates area.

Expect to find lots of vintage and new items, including small household appliances, antique toys, sewing and craft items, a rare vintage children’s furniture set of metal folding table and four chairs from the 1950s and sizes of clothes ranging from big to small and wide to tall.

Sew Special Network was organized by Marsha Frantisak of Leesburg, who wanted to continue sewing and crafting for

charity after leading a group of sewers who made nearly 6,000 face masks during the pandemic. The network is similar to a nonprofit Frantisak formed in Danville, Ohio, before moving to Indiana in 2012.

Sew Special Network gathers donated materials and members make items to give to other charitable groups. Winter gear for all ages and items for infants, toddlers, hospital, home care, nursing home and homeless shelter needs are made. The group has grown from six to more than 20 volunteers and hopes to expand.

Money raised at the sale will go toward the purchase of necessary supplies and also saving for a “more accessible” place for the group to work, according to Frantisak.

For more information about Sew Special Network or to volunteer, contact Frantisak at ssnainfo23@gmail.com or (574) 453-2185.

Durski joined Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home in Plymouth, where she worked for more than 10 years, first as a funeral director and later as a junior partner.

In April, Durski joined McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapels in Warsaw. She will be serving families with the senior funeral director, David Baker.

Durski and her husband, Joe, have three children, Neala, Orrin and Nolin. They reside in Plymouth and attend St. Michael Catholic Church.

Self-taught artist – Grandma Moses

Anna Mary Robertson “Grandma” Moses (1860-1961) was a housekeeper-turned-homemaker who received no formal education but became a legend for her lively folk art paintings. She first became interested in art as a child when her father would buy a sheet of white paper for the children.

As she married and grew her own family, she pivoted into creating decorative art. When Moses was 76 years old, she developed arthritis and could no longer use her sewing needles, so her friends suggested she try painting again.

At first, she just used whatever medium she had on hand, such as house paint. Once she could afford to buy art supplies, she created paintings on pressed wood using oil paints. Moses had a talent for creating paintings of the simple rural life that had surrounded her when living on farms throughout her life.

She designed her paintings to depict the way life used to be without modern features and began selling them for $3 to $5 each depending on the size. Of her paintings, a German fan stated, “There emanates from her paintings a light-hearted optimism; the world she shows us is beautiful and it is good.” (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/

Grandma_Moses)

Moses created award-winning jams and baked goods and it was this talent that led to her discovery by art collector Louis J. Caldor in 1938.

A local store had an exhibit in the window with Moses’ jams and baked goods and her paintings were used as a backdrop. Caldor saw the paintings and was so impressed he bought all the paintings in the window and 10 additional paintings from Moses.

The next year, Caldor arranged for the paintings by Moses to be included in New York’s Museum of Modern Art exhibition titled “Contemporary Unknown American Painters.” This led to exhibitions of her artwork throughout Europe and the United States over the next 20 years. Grandma Moses created over 1,500 canvasses in three decades and her work has been reproduced on greeting cards, tiles, fabrics and ceramics and used to market products. Kerlin Motorsports makes Hartford City youth’s dream come true

There was a buzz at Kerlin Motorsports Thursday, April 27. Not only was the long-time tractor and motorsport dealer hosting an open house, but it was also assisting in its first Make-A-Wish program.

Kerlin Motorsports presented Isaiah Rittichier, 12, with his

very own tractor.

Rittichier, who is dealing with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, said he wanted the tractor to assist his family on the family farm. Rittichier, who is from Hartford City, made his request last fall.

Jessica McBride, a mission fulfillment specialist with Make-AWish Foundation, explained certain conditions must be met in order for

a child to qualify for a wish through the foundation. A child needs to be critically, not terminally, ill. A recommendation a child receive a wish usually comes from the child’s family, doctor or a social worker.

Once a recommendation is made, Make-A-Wish verifies the child’s

condition. McBride said there is typically a lot of paperwork involved and the child’s medical team must sign off on all wish types.

Make-A-Wish then provides a Discovery Team that assists the child in figuring out exactly how their wish may be achieved.

“Isaiah came right out of the gate with a tractor,” McBride said. Such a request in not the usual type of wish the organization deals with. In fact, this is only the second time McBride is aware that a request for agricultural equipment has been made in her region, which covers Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky.

Because of his age and the fact the tractor is vehicle, a Make-AWish board had to approve Rittichier’s wish. McBride said the fact he comes from a farming family and already knew how to drive a tractor helped sway the board to approve the wish.

After arriving at the dealership, Bret Wolf of Kerlin Motorsports gave Rittichier and his father, Joshua, the official walk-through on the tractor, including the formal starting of the engine.

“I’ve always wanted a tractor since I was 3,” Rittichier said. He told reporters he didn’t have a

preference as to what type of tractor, “as long as it got the job done,” he said. He hopes to get out in the field with it in the next few weeks.

Rittichier plans to grow sweet corn, turnips, lettuce and other vegetables in about 20 acres. He said his favorite part of gardening is the fresh fruits and vegetables that result.

Before heading for home, Wolf presented Rittichier with a toolbox with a tape measure, square measure, a small level and several seed packets inside. “I left enough room in it so it can grow with you,” Wolf said. Rittichier was also given the manuals for his new tractor.

2022-2023 KOSCIUSKO YOUT

A Letter From The President

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to congratulate each member of the Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy graduating class of 2023 on a job well done and also express my thanks to them for volunteering their time in our community.

This marks the 30th year of providing an opportunity for juniors from local high schools to be involved in KYLA. This year, thirty-four students have spent the last eight months learning about various aspects of Kosciusko County, leadership, and how we can contribute by becoming more involved. They have volunteered their time in order to serve their community as well as complete their Project Proud. Once again, the Project Proud presentations were very impressive. Great job!

I would like to express my sincere thanks for all who have contributed to the success of KYLA throughout the year. Many community leaders volunteered time, resources and facilities to assist us. Also, thank you to the parents and the schools who have supported the students throughout the year. We appreciate your interest in the future of our community. I would also like to recognize the contributions of the KYLA Board Members this year. I appreciate all you have done to help make this another successful KYLA class.

We wish the best to each of the graduates and look forward to seeing them in leadership roles in our community in the future.

Edgar Allen Anglemyer Expert Card Player

Edgar Allen Anglemyer, 84, Southbury, Conn., passed away peacefully on Friday, April 21, 2023, at Regional Hospice of Danbury after an eight-year battle with Alzheimer’s.

He was the husband of Phyllis (Ferber) Anglemyer. Ed was a 37-year resident of Southbury, Conn.

Born on March 1, 1939, in Goshen, the son of the late Hubert R. and Jeannetta (Logan) Anglemyer.

He was predeceased by his sister, Patricia (Anglemyer) Naylor, to whom he was affectionately known as “Scooter.”

Ed received his bachelor of arts in economics from Hanover College, where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity (aka Big Brother Angles) and served four years in the Air Force. While stationed at Langley AFB in Virginia, he met his wife, Phyllis, and the two were happily married for 53 years.

After his service, Ed would go on to work for over 30 years at Duracell in purchasing and in his retirement, volunteered to read to the elderly in Southbury and always made it a point to donate blood every 56 days.

Ed is survived by his wife, Phyllis; son, Craig Anglemyer and his wife Michelle of Blythewood, S.C. and their daughters, Destiny and Hope; son, Dan Anglemyer and his wife Cynthia of Winnetka, Ill., and their four children Logan, Tucker, Maggie and Douglas; his nieces, Lori (Gopher) and Kristy (Cricket); and nephew, Jeff (Dog).

In addition to being sorely missed as the bedrock of his family, Ed’s passing will create a void for his lifelong friend, confidante and partner in crime, Eugene Clancy, who had a knack for pulling Dad out of his shell, as well as his amigos Dick, Rich, Art, Bill and Lupus (yes Joe, you are last, but at least your name got in the paper).

Ed was a meat and potatoes guy (literally, his favorite meal was Phyllis’ meatloaf and baked potatoes — except for the Christmas when someone, who shall remain nameless, forgot to turn the oven on.)

The freedom of the road was important to Ed and when he was no longer able to drive, he turned his attention to his tractor and went on long rides with his grandchildren in his lap and lovingly asked whether they wanted “turtle or rabbit speed.”

Ed was a semi-pro caramel maker, ardent college basketball fan (Go Hoosiers! Go Huskies! Go Friars!) and gardener. Always lucky, Ed scored a hole in one, believed he won the Florida lottery (only to find out the ticket was planted by his granddaughters) and was an expert card player, enjoying bridge in college, poker in the Air Force and Go Fish with his grandkids in his later years. Ultimately, Ed was best known as the East Coast euchre champion: “Pick it up, I’m going alone.” Alone in a game of cards maybe; together in our hearts forever.

There will be a private memorial service in August. Donations in Ed’s remembrance may be made to Regional Hospice of Danbury at 30 Milestone Road, Danbury, CT 06810.

Munson-Lovetere Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements. To leave an online condolence, please visit www.munsonloveterefuneralhome.com.

James Martin Beer II

Wawasee Summer League Commissioner

James “Jamie” Martin Beer II, dedicated father of three, son, brother and friend to many, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at his home in Syracuse.

Jamie entered this world on Oct. 3, 1978, missing his father’s birthday by hours, hence why he was named after his dad. He was born into a sports loving family and was a very passionate fan of Notre Dame football, the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears.

Jamie was often the loudest in the cheering section and you rarely ever saw him without his beloved Cubs hat on. Jamie transferred that love of sports into his high school athletic career as an outstanding football player. As he transitioned into life as a parent, he greatly enjoyed coaching his children in various sports and, in more recent years, he served a full three-year term as commissioner of the Wawasee Summer League and was a long-standing board member for both this same organization as well as the Syracuse Parks and Recreation.

His many generous volunteer hours were instrumental in maintaining the program, the fields and in building the new baseball/softball fields that will celebrate their inaugural season in a matter of days, an event he was so looking forward to.

Jamie was a 1997 graduate of Wawasee High School and a lifetime resident of Kosciusko County. Outside of his aforementioned volunteer work, Jamie’s life revolved around his children and family. In 2021, Jamie became a grandparent to his beloved grandson, Stetson. For the 18 months they shared together on this earth, they formed an exceedingly strong bond which brought a joy to his life that was evident to everyone who saw them together.

Jamie is survived by his mother, Deborah Beer of Syracuse; his son, Devin (Chelsea) Beer of Goshen; his two daughters, Mackenzie and Morgan Beer, both of Milford; three brothers, Jared (Rebecca) Beer of Syracuse, Joseph Beer of Indianapolis and Cameron (Michelle) Beer of Indianapolis; a sister, Candace (Jeffrey) Adams of Wooster, Ohio; his beloved grandson, Stetson Beer of Goshen; as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Beer, as well as his grandparents, Donald and Ruth Beer and Lois McMillen.

A life celebration took place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, May 1, at Titus Funeral Home-Owen Chapel, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse. Funeral services followed at 1 p.m. Burial took place at Milford Cemetery, Milford. Pastor Billy Hesketh presided.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that a memorial donation be made to offset funeral costs and allow his children to lay their father to rest.

Your passion makes a difference.

What makes a great nurse? It takes selflessness to put your patients above all else. Bravery to help someone through their time of need. And dedication to push yourself to be better tomorrow than you were today. In honor of National Nurses Week, we’re celebrating the men and women who do all that and more within our very own walls: our Parkview nurses. You inspire us all with your compassion, knowledge and unwavering commitment to your patients and community.

Happy Nurses Week.

Brightpoint Development Fund awarded $500,000 Equitable Recovery Program grant

Brightpoint Development

Fund received a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of

the Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions Fund.

P UBLIC A UCTIONS

Carl V. And Frankie Click

Recently, the CDFI Fund announced 603 organizations, including BDF, received $1.73 billion in awards to boost their ability to help low- and moderate-income communities recover from the lasting impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and support long-term prosperity.

BDF was one of only five organizations in Indiana to receive funding in this round.

Due to this funding, BDF will launch a new small business loan product for loan amounts from $50,000 to $200,000. The increased loan amount will help small business owners and entrepreneurs start or grow in the current economic situation of rising costs and inflation. It also continues BDF’s mission of increasing access to capital for those individuals and families unable to access traditional lending.

Founded in 2011, BDF is a subsidiary of Brightpoint, the Community Action Agency for northeast Indiana. As a nonprofit loan fund, it provides affordable loans and financial education to 17 counties in northeast Indiana. It is a U.S. Department of the Treasury Certified Community Development Financial Institution and a U.S. Small Business Administration Microloan Intermediary.

Cyne Art & Tattoo Studio celebrates with ribbon-cutting

The North Webster-Tippecanoe Township Chamber of Commerce celebrated one of the town’s newest businesses with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday, April 19.

Cyne Art & Tattoo Studio, located at 102 N. Main St., North Webster, is owned by artist Madacyne Leatherman and includes two additional tattoo artists and two tattoo apprentices.

“We are women-owned and operated and do customized tattoos,” said Leatherman. “We are typically by appointment only, but sometimes we can do walk-in tattoos depending on scheduling.

“We are all artists outside of tattooing and art is really the cornerstone of our business. May of last year is when I started Cyne Art & Tattoo. It slowly grew and I started hiring more women.

“It’s grown to be a really peaceful and powerful place. I’m really excited to grow and be in North Webster.”

For further information about the business, visit their Facebook page by searching for Cyne Art & Tattoo, or on Instagram at cyne_ tattoo.
