Warm weather is not the only thing returning to the city of Warsaw. On April 15, Warsaw Parks and Recreation campgrounds will “return to normal programming,” said Superintendent Larry Plummer. Programming cancelled or done virtually due to COVID — concerts and adult painting, for example — is also back and in-person, with staff returning to park buildings. This will eventually include staff returning to the Central Park office after Buffalo Street construction necessitated a temporary move to the Pete Thorn Center in Lucerne Park. The one exception will be larger concerts featuring national acts, which will be replaced by additional Friday night concerts. These more intimate performances were averaging attendances of between 200 and 250 people before the plug was pulled last year in response to COVID. “I’m very excited to have people back in the buildings safely,” commented Recreation Director Sheila Weiringa, noting masks and social distancing will remain in effect as long as necessary. As of this writing, Wieringa also expects the 2021 recreation guide to be available virtually at www.warsaw.in.gov/192/ Parks-Recreation. Friday night concerts feature a wide range

In between, audiences will enjoy blues, folk, pop, country and more. Visitors to Warsaw parks may be surprised to see the 2021 “normal” is a marked improvement over previous years, and these improvements will continue in the coming months.

Lucerne Park, for example, is home to a new amphitheater, the site of a few Friday night concerts. Plummer also sees the amphitheater as a future spot for weddings and other private events. “We’re looking to really utilize that … it’s beautiful,” he raved. Visitors are already enjoying Kelly Park’s improved playground equipment, a $100,000 project completed in 2020, along with new
pickelball courts, installed with grants from K-21 Health Foundation and Dr. Dane and Mary Louise Miller Foundation. Additionally, a pond revitalization project will begin at Kelly Park this summer, including a pier and boardwalk, which will render it fishable for the first time in 30 years. “It will be the way it used to be in the ‘80s,” said Plummer. Ker Park will also be the sight of improvements. In 2020 the department was able to purchase a $104,000 piece of playground equipment geared toward children ages 5 to 12 for roughly $52,000 with the help of a matching grant. Mrs. Charles Ker donated an additional $13,360 for equipment for children 2 to 5 years old. Other changes include a drinking fountain, picnic tables and ADA accessibility. “It’s going to be a really nice neighborhood park again,” Plummer stated. On April 20, park officials will be presented with three “renditions” of playground equipment slated for Beyer Park, said Plummer. Following this decision-making process, he expects the installation to take place sometime in fall 2021. He noted it will be replacing equipment well-used for more than 20 years.
