g n i r PROGRAMS, e f f O new ART CLASSES %\ 3+2(%( %$1.6 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU Lakeland Art Center and Gallery in Warsaw has reopened after being closed since December. Its new spring exhibit, classes and programs are now underway. The center reopened Wednesday, March 2. “Our mission at Lakeland Art Association is committed to furthering the visual arts and encouraging the next generation of artists and potential art enthusiasts by promoting and supporting visual arts education and events within Kosciusko County,” said Melodie Koher, president. LAA was founded in 1957 by a group of local artists under the instruction of a former Warsaw High School art teacher, Fred Olds. Its purpose was to promote and encourage an appreciation of fine arts as well to develop individual talent. The group’s first spring exhibition of paintings and sculptures was May 4, 1958. In 1995, LAA opened its fine art gallery and over the years, it has provided many varied interesting and educational exhibits and programs. Each month, LAA hosts an art-related program. The first program of the year will be March 28 and Andrew Thomasik will be the presenter. He is an art educator for War-

saw Community Schools. He has a degree in fine arts and education. The program will begin at 7 p.m. followed by a time to visit and ask questions. In April, the center will host Thomas Zuber, an artist who creates abstract and abstract expressionism art. This is a joint exhibit with well-known artist Patrick Dillon. He turns wood into beautiful utilitarian pieces of art. Both are local artists who have work in galleries, permanent collections, and each artist wins awards for excellence in their preferred genres. On April 25, Zuber will talk about his work, which will be on exhibit in the gallery during April. Its annual juried spring show is in May. This show is open to all artists who are 18 or older. Artists from Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Michigan enter this show annually. “Historically, LAA has been privileged to receive art by the best of the best in their genre to exhibit in this show,” said Koher. The current exhibit is a high school student show and includes a scholarship competition. A reception honoring the young artists will be from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, March 13. Scholarships will be awarded to area high school seniors pursuing a fine arts degree. The scholarships are funded by the Steve Creighton Scholarship Fund. The scholar-

ships will be awarded during the reception. “Lakeland Art Association believes in giving back to the community and has been involved in Warsaw’s First Fridays events hosted by Kosciusko County Community Foundation and Winona Lake Fine Art Fair,” said Koher. LAA will have a children’s tent during the Village at Winona Fine Art Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 4. Being a nonprofit, LAA is dependant upon grants and donations to provide viable programming to the community. Patrons and new members are always welcome; anyone wishing to support LAA can stop by the gallery during open hours or send support to: Lakeland Art Association, 302 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw, IN 46580. Anyone wishing to contribute to the scholarship fund or become a member may do so by stopping by the gallery or call Koher at (574) 457-6085. Docents are also welcome to apply. Classes are offered at a reasonable fee. For more information, visit lakelandartassociation.org or its Facebook page for more exhibits and programs hosted at the art gallery. For questions, call (574) 2675568 during the art gallery’s hours, which are 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday.
