%\ 0,.( '($. 6WDII :ULWHU Michael Voss just stood there in disbelief. Jon Hoover sort of fidgeted, also unable to process what was happening. Several of the older players on the Grace women’s soccer team were going crazy. The fans in the stands, they knew exactly what was going on. As the final seconds ticked off the clock of Grace’s 2-1 victory over Ottawa in the championship game of the NCCAA Women’s Soccer National Championships, emotions were all over the map. Voss and his coaching staff didn’t run wild onto the pitch, simply turned and shook hands with one another. The fans in the stands, mostly from the Grace men’s soccer team, knew the feeling having won the NCCAA title in 2020 while the women’s team fell a goal short of the mission in overtime the match before. To finally check the task off the list was more a relief for Voss, who had been chasing a title for far too long after more than a decade as a Grace soccer coach. “We were ill-prepared to celebrate properly at the end because it’s not necessarily about winning, it’s about playing good football in a way that honors God,” Voss said, who lives just steps from the Grace campus. “Five seconds left I turned and looked at my staff and said, dude, we did it! It was clear it could happen, we just were
ef because those in disbelief moments haven’t happened for us before. It was stilll incredible to be in that moment.” amThe championship game itselff saw Grace pot the first two goals, its star power on display with a tally from LSU trans-is fer Alexis Larimore and then from can JJ All-American fter letAalbue. After lide in the ting one slide lf, goalkeeper second half, Bethany Blackwood got mate redemption, her ultimate closing thee deal after heartbreak as a juniorr netminder. The rush of emotions not only left Blackwood ut her goalkeeper coach, in tears, but Hoover, there as well. “I am so proud of B,” Hoover said of Blackwood, to which he’s mentored as the goalkeepers coach at Grace for her entire career. Hoover also serves as the Warsaw Community High School girls soccer head coach and lives in the Warsaw area. “She has grown so much on and off the field in the past four years. this program and given so much physically, mentally and emotionally. B is one of those players that shows up big in big games.” The championship for the Lady Lancers, which is part of six NCCAA national titles in the past three years for Grace athletics, had a local girl help bring the banner home. Lakeland Christian Academy graduate and Wi-
nona Lake resident Tori Calizo helped play a role in the title run, logging 41 minutes in the final and producing a shot. With just a goal and two assists for the season, Calizo did play in 21 matches and was a contributing factor in the program’s first national title. Being able to bring home the pride of a title was more than satisfying.
“Coming back from the tournament was such a joy,” Calizo said. “My mom is a Grace College alumni who played varsity basketball all four years and is now in the Hall of Fame at Grace. To be able to also be a part of Grace’s success in athletics is an honor. I am so proud to have contributed to the success of the team in earning a national title.”
