There was a day before microwaves and microwave popcorn. During said Prehistoric era, Dad had a stainless steel plug-in popcorn maker. It had seen far better days—so Dad dedicated an entire afternoon to fussing, scrubbing, scraping, and cussing it clean. Once finished, the home’s air was cleansed of further expletives, and the result? One very shiny, pretty popcorn popper. And one satisfied dad. Then his daughter very innocently made popcorn on a Friday night. As one might predict, expletive-laden air re-emerged into his home, this time accompanied by a tattle-tale stench of burnt popcorn, and a booming, “Sooo-zanne!!!!” Yeah, so I got in trouble for that one. Apparently, waiting for a commercial break (to check on my popcorn) wasn’t a good excuse. The punishment of RE-scrubbing said machine was just as dissatisfying as the absence of my popcorn whilst lovingly mesmerized by Erik Estrada’s white teeth. CHiPs without popcorn just wasn’t the same. I also learned (after an afternoon of scrubbing) that ‘stainless’ was not synonymous with stain-free. I never did remove all the burnt marks. #lessons. Yes, Dad loved his popcorn maker. He liked his cheese burnt, his horseradish spicy, and tee-times were “not negotiable.” #morelessons. Fluff, frills + bling played no part in his life, but no one wore a tux with as much class, or danced with such effortless charm as did my dad. He was quick to anger, yet offered the most calm, tender, and present company when drying a brokenhearted gal’s tears. He served this great country, and resented those who tore it down. In other words, he was like many dads in the day. And maybe like yours today. Yes, it’s June, the month of dads and official arrival of summer. It’s when we honor dads for who they were, who they are, and as they aspire to be. We say thank you. We appreciate you. We respect you. In June, we jump into the summer month of warm sunshine. It’s time for waterside tunes, smokin’ hot grills, boats humming across the water, amazing sunsets + blazing bonfires by night. June is when we inhale fully, and exhale with contented appreciation for this moment right here. Right now. Yes, it’s the moments—and the people with whom we share them that fulfill. And that’s the theme of this issue. To enjoy and remember each and every darn moment possible. From celebrating the allure of wooden boat ownership to know-how on bass fishing, outdoor kitchen inspiration, making your own refreshing lemon shandy, grabbing some barbeque + brews, where to hit the links, and so much more, just keep turning the pages. It’s all here. And all created for you. So, give Dad the big piece of chicken. Pour him a beer. Embrace his quirks, give him a smile, and wrap him in a hug. Appreciate the small stuff—because like burnt popcorn in a stainless steel pot, it’s the small stuff that sticks—and it never really fades. Warmly,

We might say that Lake Tippecanoe runs through Lyn Crighton’s blood— because, well, it does. The executive director of The Watershed Foundation for the past 15 years has been surrounding herself by all-things-water all her life. Her parents met on Tippy as teenagers, and they raised Lyn right where they fell in love. The lake. Yes, Lyn’s childhood summers were on the lake, where her grandpa taught her to waterski at the young age of just five years old. As a teen, Saturday night hangouts were at Tippy Dance Hall, her first job was as a lifeguard at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club at age 15—and she’d drive the boat to work. Later, she met her husband at the lake—and was married at the lake. And the wedding guest dress code? Why, bathing suit casual, of course! Lake life and Lyn Crighton are rather synonymous, as waters center her mind, body, heart, and soul. So, the dream of working to protect the lakes in her community led her to a Master’s degree in Water Resources Management from Indiana University. And her dreams came to full fruition when hired as the executive director of The Watershed Foundation. When not busily protecting the waters she loves, she’s likely found on the water—whether water skiing at sunrise, kayaking, paddle boarding, or soaking in the sun with friends + family. Like sands through the hourglass, but without the drama of daytime television. Thank GAWD. Do soaps even air anymore? They were never really my bag. But I digress—although it doesn’t matter if I digress because no one reads the small print anyways, except me, my mom, Bill, and a few more readers who have emailed: ‘Hey Sue… what’s up with the small print jokes?’ Oh, Bill, we have so much to teach these young grasshoppahs. There’s so much value in the small print. So into June we jump with one big energetic splashy cannonball. Lake waters are warming, the sun is hot, sunscreen is important, boats have been humming, and like Sheryl Crow, all we wanna’ do is have some fun. Yes, LAKElife is already producing our third magazine of the year. We love what we do, and we’re eager for a fabulous month ahead of appreciation and celebration with our favorite lake loving friends. That’s you (well, and all the rest who breezed right past the masthead!). In June let’s say thanks to dads. They’ve sacrificed, protected, guided, and loved us throughout our journeys. They’re the goofs, grill masters, fix-it guys, and for many, they’re the foundation beneath a family’s feet. Regardless of the descriptor that fits, they’re our dads. So let’s give ‘em more than just the juiciest burger and coldest beer. Let’s give ‘em genuine appreciation. And laugh at their bad dad jokes, won’cha?! And while we’re busy appreciating Pops, let’s also be sure to really see our surroundings. Engage each sense. Focus. And remember. Memories can be fleeting without intentional pause. So freeze for a

minute, suckas, I say with imaginary holsters at my hips. Yes, pause to smell the roses. Or burnt food. Or whatever is around you. Choose wisely. Speaking of pauses, Ron and I (hi, I’m Sue) have taken a one-month hiatus from our competitions. Please don’t be alarmed. It’s the first break in three years, and since I resorted to blinking in the last issue, perhaps my brain cells are gasping for air, hydration, or miraculous regeneration so I can be more creative next time. Another “don’t miss” in North Webster is a tour of Webster Lake on The Dixie, a sternwheel boat that conjures connections with days gone by. Built in 1929, The Dixie is Indiana’s oldest sternwheel excursion boat, and it still offers 75-minute cruises around Webster Lake. Public cruises run weekdays at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with additional hours on the weekends. Almost a century after its first heyday, Winona Lake has been experiencing a communitywide renaissance, thanks in large part to the lavish generosity of the late Dane Miller and his wife, Mary Louise, who is still administrating the foundation (the Dane & Mary Louise Miller Foundation Inc.) they established in 1991.

he Winona Lake area sprang to life in the late 1880s when enterprising dairy farmer J.F. Beyer and his brothers bought a 160-acre parcel on the eastern shore of what was then known as Eagle Lake. The allure was enticed by the utility of several artesian springs they employed as natural refrigeration. In 1887 the brothers, convinced the area had tourism potential, built the Spring Fountain Park resort, which included a hotel, racetrack, and roller coaster. They sold the resort in 1894 to Dr. Solomon Dickey, a Presbyterian church leader who envisioned the area as a religious retreat center. Over the next two decades,

Dickey oversaw the construction of homes, cottages, and the central canal which still runs through the modernday village. In 1895 the area was renamed Winona Lake, and over the next 10 years experienced its Golden Age with a quarter million tourists visiting during the summer months. During that decade, noted evangelist Billy Sunday built a family residence nearby and his fiery preaching attracted capacity crowds of 7,500 souls at the newly constructed Billy Sunday Tabernacle. Winona Lake earned its fame as a religious haven for church conferences, conventions, and training schools. Winona Lake was also one of the nation’s Chautauqua sites, established

by Dickey in 1895 with an emphasis on the religion pillar of programs offered by the New York-based organization. Notable speakers at Chautauqua events included President Benjamin Harrison, orator and politician William Jennings Bryan, polar explorer Admiral Richard Byrd, Helen Keller, Will Rogers, James Whitcomb Riley, and social reformer and author Jane Addams. When Sunday passed on to glory in 1935, attendance at the religious gatherings began to decline, and by the 1960s the area was suffering financially.

buildings and facilities continued to deteriorate and the historic district became known for its dilapidated condition. Enter the Millers, who contributed generously to projects advancing the renascence of downtown Winona Lake. By 2000, local business leaders also pooled their resources to invest heavily in restoring historic buildings, creating small shops along the canal, and promoting outdoor events and recreation. The resulting tourist-friendly area was officially dubbed The Village at Winona. Dane Miller, Ph.D., earned his wealth as one of Biomet’s founders. He served as the corporation’s president and CEO from its inception in 1977 until his retirement in March 2006, when Biomet enjoyed more than $2 billion in annual sales. One of the most recent amenities made possible by the Foundation is an ice rink, currently in construction, and its pavilion, named Miller Sunset Pavilion.

arred owls are the largest and most common owl found in low woodlands and swamps. They thrive year-round throughout the mid-to-eastern United States. Although they themselves are top predators, barred owls are wary of great horned owls. If a great horned owl moves into an area, barred owls will quickly move out. For the most part, though, barred owls stay in one territory for their entire lives; they do not migrate. When they are ready to mate (at about 2 years old) barred owls will find a partner and stick to each other for life. A pair will raise one brood of 2-3 eggs each spring, sharing the duties of nesting and feeding. They can live as long as 30 years in captivity and about 10 in the wild.

Like most owl species, barred owls have asymmetrical ears: the left is slightly higher than the right. The lopsided openings enable them to know at what height a sound is coming from, as well as the direction. Their brains gather the information and instantly create a mental image of the environment they are in. Then, barred owls can pinpoint the location of their prey. But that is not all! A barred owl’s beak is built to take full advantage of sound reception. The beak is pointed downward, almost flattened against the owl’s face. That increases the surface area over which soundwaves can be collected and redirected to the ears. As Candace Andrews, a contributor to Good Nature Travel Blog, stated, “It seems flying blind isn’t a problem when the rest of your face was meant to listen.” Indeed.

Have you joined the campaign that’s been going strong for a decade? If not, I invite you to join us on the journey!

lear Choices Clean Water® is an award-winning national program designed to increase awareness about the choices we make and the impact they have on our waterways. The campaign is all about encouraging others to ‘take a pledge.’ Social science shows that by publicly pledging to do something, you are most likely to follow-through! We currently have 11 campaigns designed to improve the lake communities we live in— each campaign encouraging simple actions people can do that benefit water quality. Each campaign offers insight and facts that teach how we affect each of the subjects addressed. Campaigns include: water conservation, lawn care, native plants, pet waste, septic systems, soil health, super kids, waterfowl, litter, trees, and service/volunteering. For example, our water conservation campaign teaches that the average American family uses more than 300 gallons of water per day at home. That’s a LOT of water! To help, online we have a ‘short list’ of ways to improve this high usage rate. Find simple ‘efficiency actions’ for actions we all can do every day. We’re about educating in a fun way. We encourage participation. Most improvements that are sustainable—no matter the subject—are a team effort. Will you join the team?

Have the lakes always been part of your life? Growing up in Madison County, Ind. I was the guest of many friends whose parents owned lake cottages on Kosciusko County lakes; going to the lake with friends just could not be beat. Then, after marriage and starting a family, my husband, Dave, and I were fortunate to purchase a lake cottage in 1980 on Chapman Lakes. We packed the car with four children and three dogs to pursue an entire summer of fun! Fast-forward 20 years, and we knew we wanted to make Chapman Lakes our permanent home. So, in 2001, the old, reliable lake cottage was replaced with our new permanent residence.

Tell us about your teaching career. I was very involved in the Logansport community, which I left behind to live permanently at the lake. I taught art at Logansport’s All Saints Catholic School, and later became Logansport’s Downtown Coordinator for revitalization and historic preservation.

We’ve been told that you are the “ultimate volunteer.” How did you get involved in conservancy? I’ve always been involved with the art community and preservation. Now living on Chapman Lakes, I needed to find my niche. It was right out my front door: maintaining and preserving my lake while creating awareness for preservation of all Kosciusko County lakes for future generations. Like anyone who moves to a different community, you start fresh by simply observing what’s close at-hand. By keeping that circle small and comfortable, you develop confidence. My first step was simply volunteering for summer events with the Chapman Lakes Conservation Association (where I’m now also a board member). Helping from pancake breakfasts to cleaning the lake clubhouse develops a sense of community and belonging. My first board involvement, however, started with Chapman Lakes Foundation. My identity started changing from being a ‘laker’ to being a lake resident and steward.

In what other organizations have you served? I’m involved with many great organizations that are advocates for the lakes. I have volunteered at the Lilly Center for Lakes and Streams with third graders learning about pollution in the lakes, and booth sitting at the Wawasee Area Conservancy Earth Day Event. I am also involved in a new organization to the area, Kosciusko Water and Woodland Invasive Partnership (KWWIP); it’s a 501(C)3 under the umbrella of State of Indiana Cooperative Invasives Management. Our goal is to stop the spread of nonnative invasive plants. Lastly, volunteering for The Watershed Foundation has increased my knowledge of lake conservation to where I’m comfortable in conversation concerning such topics.

What’s the greatest byproduct of volunteering in the community? It’s the many friendships that are developed along the way.

With all these activities, what do you do in your spare time? Travel has always been a big part of my life. I was very fortunate to travel with fellow teachers to Europe. On one two-week trip, we visited four European cities with a three-day stay at each city. My most leisurely trip was to Australia and New Zealand, with a two-day stop in Tahiti. I’ve since exchanged jet travel with RV travel with Dave. My pace now is much slower and no airport stress!

he Warsaw Kiwanis club is working with the Winona Lake Limitless Park (WLLP) to install an ADA kayak launch at the water park. The new launch will allow water access with ease, despite physical challenges. And best yet? No wet feet…

This sticker will be given to anyone who contributes $10 or more to the kayak-launch project.

How did this idea arise? On a vacation trip to Holland, Mich., I was stuck at a marina for three days (due to bad weather). While there, we were intrigued by a dock at the marina with a kayak launch that allowed you to launch your kayak with you in it. It provided a stable footing for the kayak until you get in it. To launch, you roll out into the water on a set of rollers incorporated in the dock. It also includes a graduated bench which allows you to sit, and scoot your way down to the seat level just above the kayak. You simply stick your feet in and sit down into the boat! I mentioned at the time that we should have one in Warsaw. Then, when I became president of the Kiwanis Club of Warsaw last October (2021), we were looking for a community project for 2022. I mentioned the kayak launch at Holland, and our president-elect, Brock Tidball thought that was a good idea, too.

I contacted Holly Hummitch, department director at Winona Lake Limitless Park, and asked to meet with her, without yet providing details of our idea. When we met, Kristie Maiers, the Park board president joined us as well—she’d attended that day to discuss with Holly how to get an accessible kayak launch for the park—not knowing that was precisely why we asked to meet.

Sounds like it was meant to be. Yes! I told Kristie, ‘You have to recognize the hand of God when you see it!’

How is Kiwanis helping the effort? Mostly in funding…also we’re planning to find funding for some new kayaks for the park, with support from Kiwanis Indiana Foundation and the Kosciusko County Convention and Visitors Commission.

How can the public support your efforts? The public can support this effort by purchasing a ‘Kayak Launch’ sticker for boats as well as car window decals, available from the park or any Warsaw Kiwanis member. Or, of course, direct donations to the Kiwanis Club of Warsaw are also appreciated (P.O. Box 773, Warsaw, IN 46581).

When do you anticipate the launch installation to be complete? The launch should be ready and in full operation by the Fourth of July weekend.

Is there anyone you’d like to recognize? Recognition for keeping this project on track is due to: Brock Tidball, Suzie Light, and Joni Truex of the Warsaw Kiwanis Club, and to Holly Hummitch and Kristie Maiers of the Winona Lake Limitless Park.

CRAFT BEERS LAKElife Country offers some interesting choices, and they are growing. In Warsaw, Mad Anthony Brewing Company opened a brewpub several years ago to offer their beers made in Fort Wayne. Featuring ales and lagers, they also offer pub grub for the masses. In April, they launched their “Summer Daze,” specifically for summer drinking. Hoplore Brewing Company opened in 2017 in the old mill in Leesburg, and last year expanded to Market Street in Warsaw. They feature New England-style IPAs and pale ales. Their Outskirts cream ale is an excellent palate pleaser.

BARBEQUES Smoked meat has become a very popular item in these parts. In North Webster, Roll ‘N Smoke BBQ opens for weekends at their store on East Washington. It’s a grab-and-go operation for pulled pork, ribs, chicken, and brisket. They also cater and have a food truck for special events. Outside of Silver Lake on the Sand’s family pig farm is the home of Big Boss BBQ where Steve Sands reigns supreme as the “Pork Commander.” Their pen-toplate philosophy is truly unique—they know where their pork comes from! On Saturdays they load a food truck and set-up shop in Warsaw in the old Marsh supermarket parking lot. They also sell their signature line of barbeque sauces at various outlets and online.

In the former Ortho City Brewing building on Warren Street in Warsaw, Ledgeview Brewing opened in the middle of the 2020 COVID pandemic and has been going strong since. The Sim’Plicity American pale ale is a top seller and pairs well with their many barbeque dishes. In Syracuse, Man Cave Brewing started on a whim in 2007 when Robert Vandal and two friends decided to turn a local pole barn into a ‘man cave’ to brew their own beers. Some of these concoctions proved to be exceptional, so they shared with friends. With that encouragement, they started making more and soon local restaurants and bars picked-up their brews. Then in 2018, Man Cave Brewing brewpub opened. They not only brew all their beers, but chef Matt Fry serves some excellent grub. Their Sandbar Blonde

like the smoked BBQ platter with housemade chips, are wonderful while quaffing a cold one. The most extensive smoked menu is at Ledgeview. Their “smokehouse” items include brisket, pulled pork, turkey, pulled chicken, and you can order combos. After 4 p.m., cherrywood smoked St. Louis-style ribs are available.

Aside from pork, they also offer chicken, brisket, ribeye steaks, and several homemade sides. Their smoked baked beans are stellar! A favorite sandwich from the truck is their breaded pork tenderloin. In Warsaw, there’s also Hogs R Wild BBQ. They offer St. Louis-style ribs, chicken, sides (think cowboy beans), breaded tenderloins, and even a smoked bologna and cheese sandwich, if you are so inclined. Outside of Pierceton is the Shooting Star Farm BBQ. Their wood-smoked fare includes chicken, ribs, pulled pork and brisket. They only do carry-out.

Sesame Miso Chicken Wings Skip the necktie this year and give Dad something he’ll really enjoy…wings! These Sesame Miso Chicken Wings are not only flavorful, but healthy, easy to make, and super versatile, too. Serve them with his favorite veggies, rice or quinoa, or a big salad to add even more nutrients. On top of that, they can be air fried or grilled! Directions: In a small mixing bowl, combine miso paste, garlic, soy sauce, olive oil, and black pepper. Mix until smooth. In a large Ziplock® bag, add chicken wings and miso mixture. Press air out of the bag and seal tightly. Massage bag to mix sauce into wings well. Place bag in the refrigerator and marinate for at least one hour, up to overnight (the longer the better). To bake: Preheat oven to 400 F. Remove the marinated wings from the bag and place them on a baking pan lined with parchment paper. Bake for 30 minutes, turning the wings half way (after 15 minutes) to ensure even cooking. To air fry: Place the wings in the air fryer basket and cook at 350 F for 22-25 minutes. Open and shake the basket halfway through to ensure even cooking. Let the wings rest at room temperature for 5 minutes and serve. To grill: Preheat grill to medium heat (about 350 F). Place wings on seasoned grill and flip occasionally until brown, about 20 minutes. Sprinkle on sesame seeds and herbs as desired. Enjoy!

The vintage wooden boat evokes images of bygone summer days, when revelers sipped Cosmopolitans by the shore, and Cole Porter melodies floated from lakeside dance pavilions. It alludes to spirited flappers adorned in feathers and pearls, and to pipe smoking gents in seersucker suits. As timeless as an Astaire and Rogers musical, the wooden boat inspires new generations of followers who endeavor to sustain its beauty and appeal. Rooted in ancient civilizations, wooden boats have evolved over thousands of years, from simple if functional canoes, to the pleasure runabouts that adorn lakes today. And many of these glossy mahogany models with the rumbling engines— branded as Chris-Craft, Hacker-Craft, and Gar Wood, among others—boast nearly a century of performance. Preserving a classic wooden boat, however, requires more than an occasional wash and wax. It demands a commitment to maintenance and restoration. From enthusiastic novices to seasoned craftsmen, all ranks of wooden boat owners engage in the art of refinishing. Some approach the restoration as a hobby, while others dedicate themselves to preserving a family heirloom. An exercise in patience and skill, a do-it-yourself project rejuvenates not only the watercraft, but also the owner, who radiates pride and fulfillment. One proud wooden boat enthusiast, Luke Knecht, recognizes that sense of satisfaction. “People enjoy a boat more, having invested time and energy in its care,” he said. And for some, he added, the effort “recaptures a youthful memory associated with a particular boat.”

Though summer wanes, her warmth still dwells in those who nurture their venerable craft, seduced by reminiscence. In the comfort of a lakeside workshop, in the wake of boating season, a boater studies his craft. The vintage wooden runabout, a summertime legend now weathered from sun exposure, lays in hibernation. The boater scrapes, conscientiously, at the hull and the deck, removing layers of blistered varnish. Each stroke is an act of compassion towards an aged and revered companion. And that care continues as the boater glides his hands slowly and repeatedly over the planks, sanding the surfaces. Stripped of her old coat, the boat, arguably, sheds some of her charm. But no amount of scouring can dislodge the legacy ingrained in her boards, embedded in her frame.

An unmistakable yet mellow scent emanates from the antique boat. A fusion of varnish, leather upholstery, and engine oil, it hovers within the workshop. Entranced by the redolence, the boater surrenders to daydreaming and revisits the sunwashed waterscapes where the runabout sheared the waves, where tanned faces glowed with delight. He can hear the laughter above the engine’s thrum. He can feel the tickle of a warm breeze. Basking in his recollection, he senses the warmth of childhood summers spent at his grandparents’ lake cottage. His heart flutters, just as it did years ago aboard this wooden runabout, each time Grandpa started the motor and roared from the dock. Now, using long, light touches, he applies layers of varnish to the sanded deck. Every brushstroke is a loving caress, a tribute to those who boarded the wooden boat and shaped her story. And the single tear that tumbles from his eye seals the boater’s emotional attachment to his art, and to his craft.

a fresh(water) start on the fishing season with a common Kosciusko County catch

With June arriving, temperatures have warmed enough that fish (not to mention fisherfolk) don’t mind being out and about a bit more.

LAKElife Country offers plenty of choices for anglers both new and expert, and a great fish to go looking for is one of the most common in Kosciusko County: Bass. Here are three bass species to look for:

Rock on

If you find yourself on Oswego Lake, Tippecanoe Lake, or Lake Wawasee, you might try casting about for rock bass. These fish tend to look a little more rounded than the largemouth and white bass. They tend to look like a bluegill crossed with a largemouth, and have a black spot near the gills—and they have red eyes. One way to do it, according to Joe Denton, the owner of Ye Olde Tackle Box in North Webster, is so-called “wacky worm” fishing, or, as he says the pros call it, ‘dum-dum’ fishing.

This rig is made up of what’s called a Senko worm—it’s about four to six inches in length, and is threaded through an O-ring and attached to a small hook. You just cast your line, twitch it, and reel it in.

Going big

No doubt the most common bass to be found in most of the lakes in the area is the one most people likely think of when they think of bass: the largemouth bass. It’s easy to spot, as its mouth can often extend back past its eyes. When they see something they like, they go after it, making the chances of a hit on your hook pretty good. That same temperament applies to most bass, so if largemouth aren’t around, or you’re looking to check another bass off your list of fish to catch, a few other species are found in Kosciusko County lakes.

There’s always a catch

Bass are fairly easy to catch, as long as your bait looks like something they might want to eat. Techniques vary based on the species and the angler, but trolling, casting, live-bait, and lures all can work.

Another lure to try, Denton said, is called a jerk bait. These tend to look like a minnow or small shark and come in 3-, 4-, and 5-inch sizes, with small hooks along the underside. Jerk baits are topwater baits, but can also be lightly twitched a few feet below the surface and allowed to bob to the top. Whether you’re using manufactured lures or live bait, be sure to look for things that bass want to eat, such as worms, frogs, crayfish, and bait fish, to name a few. As for where to look, try aquatic vegetation, spots in and around piers, fallen trees, holes, and drop offs.

Earn your stripes

White bass are another species to seek, and are a good, light tackle fish. They are smaller and stockier than a striped bass while sharing the coloring of silvery sides with unbroken black stripes. Look for these in Winona Lake.

celebrates its 50th year of success Bart’s operated at that location for 20 years before building a warehouse on a 44-acre parcel fronted on SR 13 north of town. The business moved into the warehouse in the fall of 1994, and the following year Bart’s opened its new offices and shop. A subsequent addition brought the current building footprint to 35,000 square feet for the warehouse and 5,000 square feet each for the store and office space.

Bart’s now employs “six year-round employees and a couple of independent contractors, and we will hire this year probably 12 to 14 seasonal sales and warehouse staff,” said Mike Wilson, manager. “We’ll hire mainly college students, with a few school teachers who are coming back to work in the summer.”

With his characteristic gratitude and selfless altruism, Bart Culver summed up his half a century of business success in less than 30 seconds.

“T

he cornerstone to our building reads, ‘Dedicated to our customers and staff.’ They are the two things that make this business great. I will always be indebted to the people who work here and have allowed me to live out my curiosities, of which I have many.”

Bart’s Is Born

In 1974, Culver launched his enterprise, Bart’s Watersports, in a two-story house in North Webster. After two years, the business outgrew that location and Bart’s moved to the south edge of town, setting up a warehouse and shop now occupied by Pedals and Paddles.

Wilson looks forward to Bart’s busiest season in May, June, and July. “I think the most fun part of our corporate culture is in the spring, when the college kids come in with such excitement and enthusiasm for learning… They are coming out of college right when we need them, so the timing and relationships are perfect.” Wilson, a retired school teacher, started his career at Bart’s in 1978 by working summers, and went full time in 1988. In his 44 years with the company, Wilson acquired a birds-eye view of the census of employees and customers who have come and gone over the decades. “Our employees have been dedicated and our customers have been loyal. Some of our customers have been with us all 50 years. We know them by name and they know some of us by name.” Indicative of Culver’s care for his employees, Wilson recounted “probably the biggest decision in our 50-year history.” In the late 1980s, Culver considered moving the entire enterprise to Bloomington, for logistical reasons involving labor availability and proximity to UPS and FedEx hubs.

“We went down and looked at warehouse land and office space,” said Wilson. “When we got back, Bart asked the year-round employees who wanted to go down there. I was the only one to raise my hand, so he decided to keep the business in North Webster.”

Changing With The Times But Basics Remain The Same Wilson also noted Culver’s acumen and prescience in adjusting the business to evolving national and international commercial circumstances.

“Bart has always been kind of on the forefront with catalogues and mail order, and then in the 1990s with the internet — which many people thought was just a fad — Bart really got a hold of it and we were early adopters of the potential of the internet.

Over the decades, Bart’s has attracted some notable customers, including the Shah of Iran, King Hussein of Jordan, and Mitt Romney, who “is a big waterskier and buys from us from time to time. His whole family must be waterskiers, because his orders will include various intergenerational sizes.” Bart’s offers “all the toys you can use in or around or behind your boat,” said Wilson. “We are loyal to our niche and will keep offering the latest and greatest in watersports.”

Besides products, Bart’s offers expert guidance and instruction for first-time and novice boaters and skiers, from a staff eager to serve. “ Every year Bart’s gives away plastic tumblers, and has crafted a special logo for this year’s 50th anniversary. comes to time apart, “Deb very much enjoys shopping and improving our homes, and I have a passion for yard work,” Barney said with a smile. So it’s no wonder that this couple finds harmony and fulfillment at the lake. It’s a place to host those they love, a space to unwind, capture lake views, and count those blessings. But the waters of Wawasee hold bonds of even greater depths, with a longstanding history within Deb’s side of the family. And all on the very same shores. It seems the pathway to Deb and Barney’s permanent lake home has perhaps been paved all along. But the first steps began many years ago…

Family History

It was Deb’s grandfather, the founder of Fort Wayne-based AALCO Distributing, who had the foresight to purchase property on Lake Wawasee, creating the original family lake home. The property is situated on the northeast elevated shore with views of the sunset and sunrise over Johnson’s Bay. This area of the lake is steeped in history, situated between Noll Hall (formerly Church of the Little Flower) to the south and Wawasee Spink Condos (formerly the Spink Hotel and Our Lady of the Lake Seminary and Wawasee Preparatory) to the north. • The fun + colorful grandchildren’s bedroom has individual lighting for each bunk, plus an additional full-size bed. • Both daughters have bedrooms upstairs, with full baths.

As time progressed and the family grew, so too did the original lake home—which was frequented by Deb and Barney, Deb’s siblings and all their kiddos. Then in 2007, opportunity arose to purchase the lot next door, and Barney and Deb jumped at the chance, considering it more of an investment than a place to build a new dream lake home of their own. But as happens with most things that are meant to be, one step advanced to the next.

It Started With A Beach House

The first to emerge on the new Niezer property was the ‘beach house’—a fun, lakeside structure built into the hill. Equipped with refrigerator, a bar, shade, and plenty of seating, it’s a fun party zone where the family can hang out all day—and it’s mere steps to the sandy bottom of Wawasee’s north shore; an ideal location for grandchildren to play. The hill leading to the beach house was landscaped in the fall of 2015 with boulders, plants, and flowers—a hobby that Barney truly enjoys. Barney’s hill is a stunning sight from the water, and one of the more uniquely landscaped plots along the lakeshore.

Barney said. “And, Deb's brother and sister are able to enjoy their home much more than before. Before, we would take turns…now we can be here at the same time.”

The Lake Home Emerges

Then in May of 2016, Buhrt Builders broke ground to begin construction on the 4,000-square-foot lake home. Completed in April of 2017, this 5 bedroom, 5.5 bathroom home offers enough room to stretch out for some solace, and plenty of areas for gathering and fun. “We have gone from sharing the original home with Deb's brother and sister to being able to come to the lake year-round,”

Steps away from the original family home, and with the same water views and sunsets Deb was raised with, it’s a lake home close to the heart. And, within the new home, large windows and lake views are plentiful; it’s a peaceful sight regardless of the direction you’re looking. “We definitely wanted to take advantage of our location and be able to enjoy the views of the lake,” Deb said. The home’s traditional and contemporary interior exudes class and style, and the layout encourages togetherness—it was designed with family in mind. To encourage family gatherings, good times, peaceful sunsets, excellent grilling, and flowing beverages. In fact the best day at the Niezer lake home? It’d look like this: “Our favorite

day at the lake includes going for a walk, heading down to the lake for some fun in the sun, sitting on the pier, getting in the lake and going for a boat ride,” Barney said. “In the evening, we’d have cocktails and grill out at our new outdoor kitchen area for dinner, followed by sunset and relaxing on the front patio under the stars. It’s hard to beat a day like that, whether it’s just the two of us, or with family and friends.” Hard to beat, indeed. And truly blessed.

One potato, two potatoes, three potatoes, four! Five potatoes, six potatoes, seven potatoes, more!

s a young girl in the country, I remember reciting this nursery rhyme with my little friends, all the while thinking of my mom’s potato salad that she made from our own grown potatoes. Nothing described a summertime BBQ to me more than this! The flavor and texture of homegrown potatoes are far superior to the store-bought varieties, and with potatoes being so simple to grow, this can (and maybe should!) be a staple in anyone’s garden.

• Dig a trench 4 to 6 inches deep. A Warren hoe works perfectly for creating your trench. At the bottom of your trench, it’s vital to add compost and/or organic fertilizer to the soil. • Plant potatoes at the bottom of the trench, about 12 inches apart, with as many eyes facing upward as possible.

So, let’s get growing!

• Rows need to be about 36 inches apart.

The variety of potato to plant is, of course, completely up to you. Typically you’ll find a choice of white, yellow, or red potatoes, however, there are purple and blue varieties as well.

• Then, cover the potatoes with dirt. At this point, we simply wait. • When green sprouts reach 8 inches in height, bury all but their top 4 inches with soil, chopped straw, or shredded leaves.

My personal favorite is the Yukon Gold potato. It’s so versatile, and perfect for mashed potatoes or potato salad. There are also the Kennebec white potatoes which are ideal for baking and grilling. Another great variety is the red potato, which tends to harvest earlier than the others. Reds are great for roasting or steaming, and are perfect in potato salads.

• Repeat this step again when potato plants grow another 8 inches. The more you hill, the more abundant your harvest is likely to be. I usually hill mine to a height of 18 inches. • Stop hilling when the vines flower.

To purchase your seed potatoes, head to your local nursery or farmer’s co-op and get your seed potatoes there. You can’t miss them in the giant bins, and they are the least expensive option I’ve found.

• Full-sized potatoes take about 80-100 days to reach maturity. • To harvest, wait until the vines die back. Dead vines signal that the tubers have reached maturity. Now reach into the soil with your hands and pull the tubers up.

• Potatoes can be planted very early in the gardening season, as soon as you can work the soil. • Plant potatoes in loose ground that has good drainage. Prepare your potatoes for planting. • If the seed potato has more than three ‘eyes,’ cut the potato to make more pieces to plant. You’ll want just two to three eyes on each piece. Make sure to do this the day before planting so the flesh has time to harden before planting. This will prevent them from rotting once in the ground.
