Yoder’s legacy takes many forms

Adam Yoder doesn’t have a lot of homages in and around Nappanee, but he does have one bit of name recognition that will serve his legacy well.

Yoder was bestowed the honor

of having the training room at McCormick Creek Golf Club named in his honor, the Adam Yoder NorthWood Girls Golf Team Center.

Located underneath the clubhouse at the golf course, Yoder’s NorthWood golf teams have used the space to practice and organize indoors for years. As the team built its identity as one of the top programs in the northern third of the state, the Lady Panthers’ use of the

The honor was given to Yoder in October following his final season with the program. Yoder stepped away from the girls program after 14 years of which the team not only continued to rewrite its own record book, but become a state power. He also resigned as head coach from the girls basketball program in 2020 shortly after winning the program’s second state championship.

Yoder guided more than two dozen athletes to All-NLC status, Yoder’s 9-2 mark in nine-hole matches in 2021 left his career mark at 159-21 in his 14 years, losing just two matches between 2012-20. Just one of those losses came in NLC play dating back to 2011 and the team rattled off 68 straight wins between 2014-20.

First Presbyterian to offer Christmas Day brunch First Presbyterian Church in Goshen will be hosting a Christmas Day brunch of pancakes and sausage links. The free meal will consist of four pancakes and three sausage links with prepackaged butter and syrup, and choice of milk or orange juice. Prepackaged silverware will also be included.

The drive-through, carry-out only meal will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 25. Delivery options are also available for the same meal.

For delivery, call the church office

at (574) 533-7845 between 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday. In order to plan the routes for drivers, all delivery orders will need to be received by noon Tuesday, Dec. 21.

For same-day carry-out, arrive between 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 25. Follow the traffic as directed by a volunteer. Someone will take your order and bring your food to your car. No one will need to get out of their car; you will stay in the car line throughout the entire process.

If you are on foot and desire a

carry-out, you’ll need to line up on the north side of the building (by the playground). You’ll need a mask and need to physically distance. Someone will take your order and bring you your food. Then the food can be taken to a different location to be eaten.

Help the city decorate Mirth Tree Theresa Sailor, educator of the City of Goshen’s Department of Environmental Resilience, credits her husband for the idea of the Mirth Tree. “We need more fun.

We need more activities for the community,” she said.

In an effort to encourage a reduction of waste and to educate about the importance of reusing and recycling, GDER is inviting residents to help decorate the city’s first Mirth Tree with homemade ornaments Sailor pointed out in most communities the Christmas tree is professionally done. The Mirth Tree encourages the community to participate. Aaron Kingsley, head of Goshen’s Tree Department, wanted to encourage some noncommercial expression. “Things can be homemade and still express the feeling of the season,” he said.

The Mirth Tree is also a way to encourage the Goshen community to create and celebrate together.

Kingsley said there was a long discussion about the name of the program. Mirth is an old word that harkens back to a simpler time. Sailor noted Mirth brings a deeper kind of feeling, a deeper joy.

The tree, located outside the Goshen Utilities Business Office, 203 S. 5th St., is lit up and ready for residents ornaments, which they can create out of whatever materials they have at home.

Bring an ornament anytime between now and Dec. 20, and hang it on the tree. Expect to share, as the ornaments placed on the tree are considered donations. Beginning Dec. 27, residents will be able to take one ornament off the tree to keep. You do not have to share in order to take, and vice versa — the holiday spirit is about accepting and giving without expectations.

December events at Center for Career Connections The Larry Neff Center for Career Connections wishes everyone a wonderful holiday season. Elkhart Goodwill Center for Career Connections is excited for the opportunity to help residents achieve their career goals.

If you need help with your resume, computer skills, applying for a job, or connecting with potential employers, the Larry Neff Center for Career Connections is here for resients during this time of the year.

The Larry Neff Elkhart Center for Career Connections will be closed from Dec. 24 through the 27 in observance of the holiday. It will reopen Dec. 28.

The staff welcomes people back to the Goodwill Centers for Career Connections.

• Follow CDC guidelines and do not enter if you have a fever, cough,

shortness of breath, nausea, or a sore throat.

• Masks are strongly recommended for guests who are working closer than 6 feet with anyone else.

819(,/(' ³ A new mural, located in front of the Shea & Leavitt Families Nappanee Boys & Girls Clubhouse, was unveiled Friday afternoon, Nov. 19. The mural was designed by artist Cassi Graber and created by community members who were allowed to paint sections at the Visit Nappanee First Friday event held in August.

The mural was designed so people could flll in sections similar to paint by number. ”People did a pretty good job fllling it in,‘ Graber said. She noted it was fun to watch kids and adults pick the color they wanted and start to paint. Approximately 50 community members participated.

Toys for Tots gearing up to help Santa %\ /$85(1 =(8*1(5 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU Ever wonder how Santa is able to make those special deliveries all on Christmas Eve? Well in the U.S., he gets special help from the U.S. Marine Corps and its Toys for Tots program.

In Elkhart County, Wes and Kathy Young coordinate the program while it’s sponsored by the Elkhart Area Marines, Marine Corps League 1397.

The Youngs have been busy hosting sign up days for parents who need assistance in getting toys for their children, overseeing the volunteers who have delivered collection boxes throughout the county and sorting the toys that have been coming in.

A huge toy drive was held at Home and Harvest, the former Big R location, on South Main Street in Elkhart the weekend of Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 11, all the collection boxes will be picked up from throughout the county and taken to Obeco, where the toys will be sorted and distributed.

“Obeco has been so good to us,” Wes said. “Three years ago when we moved in, none of the rooms were being used. Now people are working in the hallways so we can be here.”

The Youngs keep track of how many toys come in from the donation boxes and how many are available for each age group. On distribution day, parents receive

an average of three toys per age group.

When the toys are dropped off at Obeco, they are sorted according to age and type of toy. Kathy said a lot of arts and craft items are donated. “We try to give every family a game and (the Toys for Tots) foundation sent enough books for each child to have a book,” she said.

In 2020, Toys for Tots served 2,200 children. The final numbers for 2021 weren’t available at press time.

The Youngs start Toys for Tots Foundation in January when they send in their application to be a local collection organization. That approval usually comes in March.

Then in August the Youngs begin preparing the drivers list.

The drivers are the volunteers who drop off about 400 boxes throughout Elkhart County. Many of the donation boxes are dropped off at RV factories and local businesses.

“If you live in Elkhart County, we serve you. If you donate toys they stay in Elkhart County,” Kathy said. “Elkhart County has been very generous.” The Youngs said Elkhart County is one of the top three local collection organizations Toys for Tots has in the region.

In October the collection boxes are distributed throughout the county with sign ups held in November.

Sign-up for Toys for Tots is usually done through the Salvation

Army in Goshen and Elkhart. This year the Youngs also did their own sign-ups at Tolson Center. “The (Elkhart) Mayor’s office was very good with facilities and helping in getting the word out,” Wes said.

December is spent counting, sorting and distributing toys. “We distribute evenly between the ministries (Toys for Tots serves) and the Salvation Army,” Wes said.

Toys for Tots also does its own distribution which will be held the weekend of Dec. 18. When distribution occurs, people come into the parking lot of Obeco, while they wait, a volunteer will take their paperwork, shop for their children and then local Eagle Scouts deliver the toys to the family’s vehicle.

“We have more than 100 volunteers. Without them, this wouldn’t happen,” Kathy said.

Any leftover toys will go to Guidance Ministries so they can still be distributed.

This is probably the last year Toys for Tots can be housed at Obeco, due to the company undergoing an expansion. The Youngs are looking for a new location for 2022. Wes said the program can work within 3,000 square feet, but they would prefer to have 5,0006,000 square feet to work within.

The new location will need to be secured by August for promotional reasons, with the program moving in sometime in mid-November.
