Red Kettle Campaign %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Many people know the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, as Black Friday, the unofficial start to the Christmas shopping frenzy. But for Salvation Army officers and their legions of volunteers, Nov. 26 also marks the season for giving, when bellringers and their iconic red kettles remind shoppers not to forget those less fortunate.

Nationally, the Salvation Army received more requests for assistance in the first six months of 2021 than all of 2020. And to help meet the demand, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Goshen Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign will have bellringers posted at five Goshen locations: two Walmart stores, two Walgreens and Kroger. Five years later, Hickory Creek closed. “Some of the staff members at Courtyard Healthcare in Goshen knew me. Since Courtyard already had an activities director, I started out in the business office.”

Six months later, the position of activities director became available. “I was happy to accept the job. I enjoy being with the residents.” She has been an activities director for 25 years.

Growing up, Huser’s father called her “life’s little cheerleader.”

“I love serving Jesus! I feel that it is what I was meant to do.”

could not bring the residents to the church. So, we brought the service to them. We were married at the nursing home. The residents dressed up, got their hair and nails done. My friends helped decorate so beautifully and made the cake.

It was a wonderful day. We had the reception there as well.”

For the past 24 years, Huser has raised funds to buy the residents gifts for Christmas. “I want them to have nice gifts, things they might get if they were still living at home.”

On Christmas day, Mark dresses up as Santa and delivers gifts in the main dining area. He also delivers to those who are in their rooms. “It is such a huge celebration. My boss Brian Cook is there every year to be the master of ceremonies. After that, we have lunch and then have a Christmas party in the afternoon, where residents play Christmas bingo.”

Her children were not always in favor of waiting until evening to open their own Christmas gifts.

“But after they were finished celebrating with the residents, they were very happy that they were there that day.”

One Valentine’s Day, Mark told Huser he had a big surprise for her. “I came out to our dining room and there were one hundred red roses in several buckets. He explained to me that he knew I didn’t want all those roses, but that I would love to pass them out to my friends at Courtyard. We did it together and had a great time.”

Huser concluded, “I know that God chose me for this position at an early age, and at 60 years old, I hope to continue for as long as I can.”

I was told by a friend in late 2020, she “didn’t trust Dr. Fauci.”

I dismissed these comments at that time.

However, more recently I have questioned things and received information regarding a movie that has been made, documenting comments from several scientists regarding the SARS and COVID viruses, which should be of interest to us all. Since people and information are being censored from us, I’m not sure how long this information will be available.

Military bases Not sure where “Vote please” wants to go here.

Vote is for protecting our country. I think. But does not like paying for it. Vote also complains about the number of military bases we have. I think Vote got the base information from an Al Jazeera quote. Sixty percent of the U.S. bases by this source are 10 acres or larger while the other 40% are smaller than the new Amazon building under construction in Elkhart County.

It lists Guam as having 54 bases.

Hmmm. Guam is about half the size of Elkhart County and it has 54 bases?

Anyway, Japan is listed with many bases. I get that. Their constitution after WWll says they cannot have a standing offensive army. I think that was part of the treaty signed. And all those bases in Europe are there to protect against the old nemesis Russia.

The deaths from the novel coronavirus did not reflect politics until after the Republicans made the vaccine political.

The death rates were about the same in blue and red states.

However, a death gap between Democrats and Republicans has emerged since Republicans shunned the vaccine. Now only about 10% of Democrats eligible for the vaccine have refused it while almost 40% of Republicans have.

In October while about eight people per 100,000 died in counties that voted strongly for Biden 25 out of every 100,000 died in counties that voted for Trump. This trend should worry Republicans because there will be fewer Republican voters and many of them are elderly Republican voters. I have never been able to understand why Republican politicians would want to risk the health of their voters.

A lot of people don’t want to get the COVID shot because it is it being made different than the old shots. The flu shots are made different.

They are using our DNA to make that COVID shot and that is what people are leery of because that shot hasn’t been studied for a long time and no telling what it might do to a person in five to 10 years. On top of that it is making a lot of women sterile and also I had my two shots but it left me with mild myocarditis and I haven’t been right since I have been sick.

That shot is not all what it is cracked up to be. If I were to do it all over again I wouldn’t have got it either.

These are things out of our control. Most families are struggling to survive. It’s not getting any better. Is it possible for a nation to go bankrupt?

Without some serious changes beginning at Washington we may find out the end may be near.

It takes quite a while for things to wind their way through our court systems especially when there are many people involved.

The first sentencing for those who participated in the Jan. 6 insurrection came Nov. 10 when a former mixed marital arts fighter from New Jersey was sentenced to just over three years in prison. He was very repentant and said he had disgraced his family but with such serious charges against him his repentance didn’t help his case.

For the people awaiting their own hearing and sentencing this decision does not bode well for those in the same boat.

Low-barrier shelter will not be reopened Last year, the local nonprofit Goshen Interfaith Hospitality Network collaborated with many local agencies to open a low-barrier shelter, with the City of Goshen as a financial contributor in last year’s shelter.

Unlike traditional high-barrier or program shelters, low-barrier shelters are emergency locations that do not require criminal background checks, income verification, program participation sobriety or any kind of identification.

Due to a lack of location this year, consistent staffing and the excessive consumption of drugs and alcohol by those who stayed overnight, which led to fights and dangerous situations last year, Interfaith Hospitality Network will not be providing a low-barrier overnight shelter this year.

There has been communication with Faith Mission in Elkhart, which will continue to operate a low-barrier shelter this year.

Over the years, Faith Mission has had enough beds open to welcome guests from all corners of Elkhart County.

To ensure everyone in need of a bed can get there, the city will be working with several local non-

profits to ensure transportation is provided to those who need to get to Elkhart or back to Goshen from the shelter.

Mayor Jeremy Stutsman said the city will continue to work with homeless residents to make sure they know of the resources that exist.

“We all need to come together as a community to help our neighbors have access to all the resources our organizations have to offer,” he said. “If you have connections to someone who is experiencing housing issues please help us convince them to accept the help that is available.”

The city will continue to provide daytime warming shelters as needed when temperatures dip.

“Resources for those in need of housing or shelter will be available to them day and night all throughout the winter,” IHN executive Director Mindy Morehead said. “We want to ensure everyone in Goshen has access to warm meals and a warm place to sleep.”

That is the Belles and Beaus Club in North Manchester. Shepherd’s Pie Good neighbors: Here is the foolproof formula — you pick the mix-ins. There are five steps to this wonderful dish and requires a bit more effort than just a ground beef stir fry with mashed potatoes on top.

Cook the potatoes: Peel 2 pounds potatoes (choose one kind) and cut into large chunks. You can leave the skin on Yukon or red-skinned potatoes. Peel the skins off russet potatoes. You choose the variety you want. Cover the potatoes with cold water in a large pot; season with salt and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook until tender, 20 minutes.

Pick your meat: Choose one kind or use a combination — you’ll need 1-1/2 pounds total of ground beef, ground lamb, or ground turkey.

Make your filling: 1. While potatoes cook, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in 1 chopped onion or sliced leek and 2 large carrots, parsnips or turnips (or a combination). Season with salt and pepper, stirring until vegetables are soft, 5-7 minutes.

2. Increase the heat to medium heat and add the ground meat. Cook, breaking up meat with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink, 6 minutes.

Spoon off fat and season with 1/2 half teaspoon kosher salt and a few grinds of black pepper. Stir in 2 finely chopped garlic cloves or 1 teaspoon jarred minced and 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme or 1 teaspoon fresh finely chopped thyme; cook until softened, 1-2 minutes.

3. Make a space in the center of the skillet; add 3 tablespoons tomato paste and cook, stirring until darkened, about 1 minute. Stir into meat mixture 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce. Stir in 3/4 cup dry wine or red wine, tomato juice or stout. Simmer until the skillet is nearly dry, about 2 minutes.

Add 1 cup low-sodium broth and simmer until the mixture is saucy, 4-5 minutes.

Choose your mix-ins: Stir in 1 cup frozen vegetables: peas, corn, Lima beans, or mixed small vegetables. Transfer to a 3-quart baking dish.

Assemble the dish: Drain the potatoes and return to pot, Add 4 tablespoons butter and 2/3 cup half-and-half or whole milk; mash well. Season potatoes with salt and pepper and add up to 3

of the following mix-ins; 2 chopped scallions, 1 clove garlic, grated or 1 teaspoon jarred; 3/4 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese; 1-2 tablespoons dijon mustard; or 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish. Spread potato mixture over meat with back of spoon. Bake at 425 degrees oven, preheated, until golden, about 20 minutes. Let cool at least 10 minutes.

Cast iron care Good neighbors: Never wash cast iron in soapy water. Clean in running water and always dry on top of a stove with high heat until completely dry. Add a few drops of veritable oil and coat bottom and sides. When cast iron is rusty or not releasing foods; wash, dry and oil generously, then bake in the over at 450 degrees for four hours. Usually it just takes one deep cleaning and you have a nice pan again. When you have stuck on food, soak in a little water and use a hard plastic scraper or something that “scrubs.” When storing, put a clean coffee filter in your pan to protect the surface — Another cast iron lover.

Donation suggestion Good neighbors: Probably a month ago some asked how to know which organizations to donate to are honest or a hoax. I don’t really have a good answer for that but thought I could recommend an organization we like and trust. Christian Aid Ministries is a non profit, tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization that has many different programs you can choose from to donate to. Hollywood Holiday tours coming soon at Ruthmere It’s time to roll out the red carpet — Ruthmere’s 2021 Christmas season, “Hollywood Holiday,” is making its debut. This year’s theme for Rushmere’s famous Christmas décor is all about the movies.

As with the 2019 competition, each designer will get to choose their room and their non-profit.

However, this time Ruthmere has some of its own staff members entering the designer pool and trying their hand at decorating. Some of the movies have already been determined; Ruthmere will feature rooms based

on “A Christmas Story,” “Elf,” “Polar Express,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” “Frosty the Snowman,” “It’s a Wonderful Life” and a few more surprises.

Visitors will be given a ballot at the end of their tour to vote on which room they liked the most (they can also base their vote on which charity they’d like to see receive the $1,000 prize; visitors may vote based on whatever criteria they see fit). That drives the incentive for people to come for a tour and pay close at-

tention to the efforts that go into the decorations.

The “Hollywood Holiday” tours begin Nov. 27 and end Dec. 30 (the museum will be closed Dec. 24-26). When coming to cast a vote, make sure to get a campus pass to see the Havilah Beardsley House, which will be decorated in the Victorian era décor.

Regular guided tours of Ruthmere Museum and Havilah Beardsley House are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday on the hour and 1-3 p.m. Sunday.

Well Foundation’s Greatest Need Fund awards annual grants Committee members overseeing the Well Foundation Greatest Need Fund awarded $170,720 in grants to improve health in Elkhart County.

The grants are being made from funds that were part of the Well Foundation, formerly named the Goshen Hospital & Health Care Foundation, which was created in 1969 to provide strength and stability to Goshen General Hospital so future generations might have access to high quality health care. The foundation gave more than $6 million to health needs of the surrounding community during its existence.

Its founders, a group of caring people who worked together to give back to the community, organized with the intent of always having local control and management. For nearly 50 years, Well Foundation operated independently before the assets were transferred to the Community

Foundation of Elkhart County in March 2017. Many of the founding volunteers remain engaged, as committee members, in grantmaking decisions surrounding healthcare in the community.

The Well Foundation Committee met in October to make annual awards from the Greatest Need Fund, which offers unrestricted grants to support community initiatives dedicated to helping Elkhart County citizens live longer, healthier lives.

“The Goshen Hospital & Health Care Foundation, now the Well Foundation, is pleased to continue our mission of supporting health-related projects and organizations in the Elkhart County area,” said Jane Erickson, president of the committee. “We have delighted in doing this for more than 50 years since our founding in 1969.”

YFC Northern Indiana inspires local youth As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to drag on, many experts are raising concerns about the mental health of children and youth around the world. Many parents and guardians report their children feeling extreme depression, isolation and apathy as the pandemic forced them to stay home and lose physical access to school, friends and extracurricular activities.

As a response to this concern, Youth For Christ (YFC, www.yfc. net), a fixture in the youth ministry community in America for the past 77 years, has supported young people by coming alongside them in pivotal moments and committing to living life together with them, all while pointing back to the hope of Christ.

One chapter, YFC Northern Indiana, has gone above and beyond in its mission to create meaningful relationships with its “We Believe in You(th)” campaign. This campaign was first created in 2020 with the goal to inspire confidence in the young people in the area. Parents, teachers, guardians, and rest of the community hung up signs and banners all throughout the Fort Wayne area with the message “We Believe in You(th).”

NorthWood High School trap team ranks first NorthWood High School’s trap team was ranked first in Conference 2 at the end of the 2021 fall season, according to Coach Dan Hummel. “The NorthWood High School trap team had a very suc-

cessful competition season in the Indiana State High School Clay Target League,” said Hummel.

This year 2021 was the fourth season NorthWood High School has participated in the ISHSCTL.

“This team showed tremendous effort and excellent sportsmanship while improving their shooting skills,” Hummel added. The team was also coached by Kenny Yoder.

Boys & Girls Club kicks off fundraising campaign The cost of families is minimal, but the impact is great. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County has kicked off its annual holiday fundraising campaign.

Chicago recently received The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award from the Grammys. This award celebrates performers who have made outstanding contributions of artistic significance to the field of recording.

Chicago was inducted into the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

They’ve been eligible since 1994.

Chicago became the first nonclassical group to perform six nights in a row at Carnegie Hall 50 years ago. Between April 5-10,

1971, the band played eight shows at the celebrated venue (including two matinees) and recorded every one of them. In October 1971, performance highlights were featured on the band’s first-ever live album, “Chicago at Carnegie Hall.” That quadruple-LP reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, was certified platinum, and is still the band’s bestselling live album.

To honor the 50th anniversary of Chicago’s historic concerts, the band recently released all eight Carnegie Hall shows in their entirety in a new 16-CD deluxe boxed set available through www.rhino. com.

Chicago has toured every year since the beginning. The original three band members are Robert Lamm on keyboards and vocals, Loughnane on trumpet and vocals and Pankow on trombone. The goal is to raise $350,000 by the end of the year. That money helps fund life-changing programs at clubhouses in Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury and Nappanee.

“We have served more than 2,800 members so far in 2021,” said Kevin Deary, president and CEO. “We know the need is great for a safe and positive place for young people to go after school and we take pride in offering programs that truly change lives.”

The Boys & Girls Clubs have been working hard since the pandemic to provide academic support for students to help close the education gap caused by online learning. The KidsCare programs have teamed up with Goshen Community Schools to provide tutors to assist learning and get students on grade level through a state- funded program.

Teen programs like Keystone Club and Torch Club focus on leadership development opportunities with a focus on career preparation and community service.

After a year without intramural sports competition, sports leagues at the clubs are more popular than ever. Michiana Youth Sports League offers teens the opportunity to play flag football, futsal soccer, basketball and volleyball. Members also have access to social skills programing that helps them become better citizens.

Those programs include, “Too Good For Drugs,” and “RAKtivists (Random Acts of Kindness).”

American Legion Post 210 celebrates centennial %\ /$85(1 =(8*1(5 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU American Legion Post 210 in Middlebury celebrated its 100th anniversary with an open house and special guests Saturday, Nov. 13. The post is named in honor of Mark Wilt who was killed in action in 1918. The post was chartered in 1921.

Howard Langdon, post commander, acted as master of ceremonies during a presentation held at 1 p.m. He recognized past and current post commanders, past post officers were also recognized as was the Boy Scout Troop, the post sponsors.

Post member Steve Rathka was presented with a certificate of appreciation for his work on the 100th anniversary celebration. Rathka was quick to call out those who assisted him.

Jack Cook, another post member, was also recognized for the overseeing the banner project.

Photos of more than 100 members of the American Legion and Middlebury community were made into banners and put on display along Middlebury’s main throughfare.

In the post fellowship hall the photos used for the banners as well as displays of old uniforms, scrapbooks and other items were on display. Some belonged to post members while others were on loan from the Middlebury Historical Museum.

Dept. Commander Mark Gullian told those gathered he was impressed with the displays. “A hundred years is a long time, but what your post has done is incredible,” he told those assembled. “I wish my post could do this. We wish every post in the state would do this. You should be proud of your accomplishments.”

Gullian was then surprised

by Langdon who presented him with a $500 check for the state committe project.

State Rep. Joanna King was the next to speak. “Thank you so much for the opportunity to share about the impact you have on the community,” she said. Noting she was impressed with the number of people honored with a banner, she noted more than 800 residents of Middlebury have served in the military.

King then recalled a Memorial Day tradition her family had.

She also mentioned a young lady she had met earlier that day who is going to serve in the military. “Thank you for your service to our country and our community. It does not go unnoticed,” she said.

State Sen. Blake Doriot said,

“Like Joanna, I’m humbled. I almost feel I should apologize. I did not serve.”

He then went through his family tree noting ancestors who had served in the Civil War, the Spanish American War all the way to Afghanistan. “I have to thank you for what you’ve done,” he said.

Doriot went on to discuss his work serving on the veterans affairs committee and research being done on hyberpolic chamber treatment. He then presented the post with a certificate from the Indiana State Senate commemorating the post on its 100th anniversary.

The projected cost is $94 million and will bring all 13 courts in Elkhart County to one location.

“It’s a very exciting time for us,” said County Commissioner Frank Lucchese, reading prepared remarks from Suzanne Weirick, president of the county commissioners. She was delayed and arrived late to the groundbreaking.

Lucchese went on explaining discussions regarding consolidating the courts started in the 1990s. Today it’s a sign of progress.

Superior Court Judge David Bonfiglio spoke about ground

being broken for the courthouse in Elkhart and meeting Stanley Ramer, after he retired from the bench. Ramer started the first youth services bureau in the state and appointed the first juvenile referee.

“Every generation of judges have started programs and service to assist citizens needs,” Bonfiglio said.

David Hess, vice president of the Elkhart County Council, said he had been at this a long time.

“As mentioned (before) this is truly a special day, a long time coming.”

For 15 months a committee has

worked together as a design team to come up with what the consolidated court campus could look like. Hess thanked the county council for its patience.

“It was frustrating over the last two years,” he said.

“Here today, we have a good design and the right people in place,” Hess said. He noted every judge came to the table and gave up something they wanted to make this happen.

Ron Maxwell was credited for stepping into the position of court administrator and having to work through the issues with the judicial committee and design team.

SWCD and master gardeners annual tree sale announced Elkhart County SWCD and Michiana Master Gardeners announce the 2022 tree sale. A 10% discount will be given on the total dollar amount of an order received in the Elkhart County SWCD office on or before Jan. 7. Payment must accompany all orders.

Early bird deadline for ordering trees is Jan. 7. Order deadline is March 4 with tree pickup/sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 26 in the sheep/ swine arena.

It is the desire of the Elkhart County Soil & Water Conservation District and the Michiana Master Gardeners to provide quality tree seedlings to those in the Elkhart County area who would like to plant small quantities of quality hardwood and conifer seedlings.

The F.O.E. donates more than $10 million a year to local and national charities for patient care and

research. As part of its philosophy, the F.O.E. gives back 100% of monies raised in the form of grants. It supports eight major charities: kid-

ney, heart, diabetes, cancer and spinal cord injury funds, a children’s fund, memorial foundation and the Golden Eagle Fund.

General Assembly kicks off 2022 session State Sen. Blake Doriot (R-Goshen) gathered with fellow legislators recently at the Statehouse for Organization Day – the ceremonial start of the Indiana General Assembly.

Organization Day marks the annual first roll call of all state lawmakers. This day also provides each Senate and House of Representatives caucus with the opportunity

to gather before session officially reconvenes in January. By state law, the 2022 session will conclude on or before March 14.

“Over the summer, lawmakers studied several topics that may help improve our state, including wastewater infrastructure and energy resources in Indiana,” Doriot said. “I am excited to get back to the

Statehouse to address the many issues that impact Hoosiers.”
