Pet rescue worker gives neglected exotics a home %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “I think I’m a rescuer at heart,” stated Staci Lane, Elkhart. “I enjoy animals others would pass by. Our house is filled with exotic animals, many of them reptiles. I have five snakes, a tortoise, three turtles, a four-foot iguana, three bearded dragons and nine cats. Many of the animals have been rescued from being euthanized. We have our own

menagerie, that’s for sure. Our family jokes about giving guided tours.”

Lane was never allowed to have a pet when she was growing up. “We lived in an apartment complex, right off CR 35, on Vistula in Bristol. The closest we came to having a pet was when we temporarily took care of my grandmother’s 13-year-old cat.”

In her first marriage, she was still unable to have a pet. “My husband did not like animals.”

partner was quite different. “My wife Chay has a real heart for animals. Since we lived in a town house when first married and didn’t want our carpeting ruined by a more conventional pet, we began to rescue reptiles.”

They started with two bearded dragons in a tank. Then they adopted an iguana.

“I didn’t like snakes. So, it was a surprise when I got a call from Chay saying a ball python was on clearance at Paw Mart. The snake was in a 50-gallon tank with a stand and was originally $700. On clearance the whole package was $350.” Anna the python, that was then 4½ feet long, found a forever home.

Eventually a boa constrictor came up for adoption. “A couple were having their second baby and wanted the snake out of the house.

We took it home. This snake is 9 feet of muscle and is a bad boy. So, we have to keep him confined to his quarters. But he eats well and stays warm.”

Since snakes eat once a week, Lane raises New Zealand blue rabbits to feed them. “These rabbits are raised for their meat and are fit for both human and reptile consumption.”

When asked what camaraderie she and her family get from these rather formidable creatures, she remarked, “The pythons are very friendly as long as they’re fed consistently. We can get them out

while we watch TV in the evenings. The iguana is rather aggressive. But the bearded dragons are a lot of fun. We can put them in a tub and feed them fruit, just like we would any other pet.”

Lane has worked at Here Kitty Kitty Rescue, 25138 CR 24, Elkhart, for two years. The cat rescue facility serves all of Elkhart County and beyond. “We joke and call ourselves cat slaves,” she remarked. “We make sure all the cats have food and water and are warm and comfortable. We clean litter boxes, mop the floor and always have an endless load of laundry.”

The rescue facility also works closely with the Humane Society of Elkhart County. “That’s one of the hardest parts of our job, seeing cats that have been neglected and dropped off.”

Seven of her house cats came from Kitty Kitty. “I love to cuddle a cat. Actually, my first cat was a bottle baby that was found at Culver Duck Farms in Middlebury.”

Lane concluded, “Every young person needs animals. My 12-yearold son Lucas has a houseful.”

Anyone who would accept the Elkhart County health director’s job will have to be one of their own politicians because their hands would be tied behind their backs and they could not help people with diseases or in the medical field.

Other counties are dealing with the same problem. Republican councilmen think their personal knowledge is better than a doctor or a nurse and we are doomed. It is called Trumpism. They would have to be a puppet for the Republicans and a mouthpiece for the Republicans.

No one of fair character would want this job.

Let those people who are wanting socialism move where they already have it and live under it. Then they will know how terrible it is.

I appreciate the Speak Out section of ‘the PAPER.’ I may not always agree with the viewpoint of every writer but having the opportunity to express ourselves openly is what we should all want.

On 10/10/2021 Sharyl Attkisson posted a live interview on her weekly TV show also found at fullmeasure.news she was granted by Pennsylvania Amish.

They revealed they ignored the government COVID mandates and vaccines from the beginning of the pandemic. Their churches held communion in May 2020 and all the church members drink from the same cup so they all caught the virus and some were sicker than others which they expected.

The result was the Lancaster County population was the first in the U.S. to achieve herd immunity. They were back to normal life while the rest of us were huddled up futilely trying to avoid it. The take away is what the government did was to essentially prolong the pandemic and our economic recovery.

Just more of that perplexing liberal logic we have to deal with.

The Elkhart County Health Department is the most biased over-reached group of people I have ever experienced. Your last stop to build a building even a farm building 300 feet from your home. They want to come out and look in your septic tank.

members and highlights program impact and accomplishments from the extension educators.

Retiring board members recognized were Andy Gall, New Paris; Matt Kritzman, Millersburg; and Brett Whitehead, New Paris.

These three are retiring after six years of service. Extension board by-laws allow board members to only serve two, three-year consecutive terms.

Elected to the board for a second term were Joe Guerrero, Goshen; and Karen Sutton, Goshen.

Elected to their first term on the board were Lisa Honey, Elkhart; Karen Meade, Goshen; and Jerold Miller, Millersburg. The extension board is made up of 15 members and are elected by the extension advisory council.

The extension report included a video from Dr. Jason Henderson, senior associate dean and director of extension at Purdue University. Henderson highlighted what was happening in extension around the state. He noted the challenges to the program brought on by COVID recognizing Elkhart County for reaching 12,000 additional people through its YouTube presentations in 30 different events.

Henderson noted the different areas extension will be looking at in the future, including: growing food, growing community, championing mental health, preparing people for their first jobs.

Among the educator’s reports it was noted the online vegetable series presentation by Jeff Burbrink, extension educator, allowed 420 people from 16 states and six countries to participate and two virtual master gardener programs reached 608 statewide.

The 4-H Livesock Auction Team: Brian Campbell and Renee Troyer-Campbell, Bristol; DJ Rhoades, Elkhart and Brent Carrick, New Paris, were recognized as the 2021 Friend of Extension Award recipients. The award was presented Tuesday evening, Oct. 26, at the Purdue Extension Elkhart County Extension Board Annual Meeting.

This team was recognized for their talent and efforts they put toward customizing the yearly livestock auction, spending countless hours in the “Auction Cave,” to see the auction runs smooth and seamless. They handled issues such as the first time auction results reached more than $1 million, the system crashing before the auction and during the auction.

Each one has their own expertise to add to the team ranging from organization, creativity, getting funds distributed in a timely manner, data base coordination and connection with the buyers.

Cole Campbell was also noted as assisting his parents and team members over the years. “They are all responsible for much of the smoothness of the sale, which has in turn led to further support from the community,” stated Robert Kelly, county extension director.

Last year’s Friend of Extension recipient, Jill Garris, was also noted as the board meeting was held virtually.

Fashion show to support SPA Women’s Ministry Homes Ladies, gather your friends and head to the Community Church of Waterford, 65154 CR 21, Goshen, at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, for a fun-filled evening of food, friends and fashion to support SPA Women’s Ministry Homes. SPA’s residents are joining the fun by being the evening’s “fashion models” as they hit the runway in fall attire provided by Rose Lee Boutique.

In addition to showing off the latest in fall fashion, residents will share their story of recovery and how their lives are being completely transformed. Ticket sales and 20% of clothing proceeds will go to support SPA’s Christ-centered, residential ministry.

SPA Women’s Ministry Homes is a Christ-centered, residential treatment program that empowers women to address the root causes of life-controlling issues and addictions in order to live productive lives of recovery.

“Girl’s Night Out” fashion show is a wonderful opportunity to help women begin their journey of recovery. Funds raised will be used to help approximately 60 women through SPA’s one-year residential program, transitional housing and aftercare services. With the community’s help, women struggling with addiction will have the opportunity to participate in counseling, re-

covery groups, life-skills training, job placement and so much more. Most importantly, hearts and lives are being transformed

by God, families are being restored, and hope in a better tomorrow is being renewed.

Goshen Historical Society Museum will be participating in Downtown Goshen’s First Friday “Art Tour” Nov. 5 by opening a new local art exhibit featuring the work of Goshen native T. Dart Walker (1868-1914). He lived in Goshen with his parents, Charles and Jenny Cooley Walker, at 308 E. Lincoln, in a house that still stands.

Also featured on First Friday will be the work of artist Angela Studebaker.

Walker first studied art with Goshen native Ed Blue in New York City. Then he studied in Paris at the Julien School and with the famous artist Adolphe Bouguereau. He reportedly placed at the top of a class of 600 students and had a painting displayed at the Paris Academy of Fine Arts.

Returning to the U.S., for 21 years from 1893 to his death in 1914, he was a prolific and na-

tionally prominent illustrator for major magazines, such as Collier’s, as art director, Harpers and the Leslie Illustrated publications. The illustrations in the GHS exhibit include scenes from high society, the Spanish-American War, Chicago football, politics and a Thanksgiving scene for Leslie’s Weekly.

Walker was a friend and portraitist of President William McKinley and became most famous for his scene of McKinley’assassination. Walker died in New York City in 1914 at age 46 and is buried in Oakridge Cemetery near his parents.

Studebaker paints beautiful pictures of bright, happy, organic things from nature such as birds, flowers, and butterflies.

Her art is not photo realist but is more whimsical and loose, but not quite abstract.

National Guards men supplements hospital staffing Sixteen members of the National Guard arrived at Goshen Hospital Thursday, Oct. 21, to pitch in where needed, helping ease the strain on health care workers.

The national shortage of health care workers has resulted in a difficult staffing situation.

“We are deeply grateful for the National Guard’s coming to help us with our staffing shortage,” said Randy Christophel, president and CEO of Goshen Health.

“Having them here in the short term to address this immediate need will enable our colleagues to work under less stressful conditions and focus more fully on

their essential tasks. The National Guard is an invaluable resource for us and our community in this time of need. It was deployed to help in a number of Indiana’s long-term care facilities last year due to COVID-19 and in 2021 has assisted many hospitals across the state.”

“We also appreciate the assistance of the Indiana State Department of Health in helping coordinate the support of the National Guard,” said Julie Crossley, chief nursing officer, Goshen Health. “They were instrumental in ensuring a rapid and timely response to our need.”

Boat manufacturer investing $12 million Smoker Craft Inc., a fifthgeneration, family-owned boat and pontoon manufacturer, announced plans to expand operations in north central Indiana, creating up to 100 new jobs by the end of 2024.

“With homegrown Hoosier companies like Smoker Craft at the helm, Indiana will continue driving its economy forward, positioning our state for longterm economic stabilization and growth,” said Jim Staton, SVP and chief business development officer for the Indiana Economic Development Corporation. “We’re excited Smoker Craft chose to continue propelling its growth here in Indiana, creating even more quality career opportunities for Hoosiers.”

The company will invest $12 million to construct and equip a 200,000-square-foot space on its current 600,000-square-foot production campus at 68143 Clunette St. in New Paris for additional boat manufacturing and shipping. This expansion will allow the company to serve growing customer demand. Construction has begun, and the new building is expected to be fully operational

by April 2022.

The Sept. 28 announcement comes nearly seven years after Smoker Craft announced plans to expand operations in New Paris,

investing $4.1 million and creating up to 100 new jobs by the end of 2018.

“Smoker Craft Inc. started construction on a 200,000-squarefoot warehouse and shipping facility,” said Tim Jones, vice president of finance for Smoker Craft. “This expansion will be used to increase efficiencies to the loading process and allow us to ship not only more boats to our dealers all over North America but raise the quality of the delivered product. The warehouse portion of the project is designed to free up manufacturing space in all three of our product lines: aluminum fishing boats, pontoon boats and fiberglass deck boats.

This expansion will help meet the increased demand for our product throughout our dealer network.

Smoker Craft, which currently employs 800 U.S. associates including 770 in Indiana, is hiring for computer numerical control welding positions. Interested applicants may apply online.

Founded in 1961, Smoker Craft produces aluminum fishing boats, high-adrenaline fiberglass sport boats and next-generation performance pontoons. The business sells its boats through a domes-

tic and international network of more than 300 dealers. In 2018, Smoker Craft was awarded the Marine Industry Customer Satisfaction Index Award by the National Marine Manufacturers Association for measuring customer satisfaction and pursuing continuous improvement of its aluminum outboard, deck and pontoon boats.

“We are extremely pleased that Smoker Craft Inc., a legacy Elkhart County company and a leader in the boating industry, continues to thrive and grow additional production capabilities in New Paris,” said Chris Stager, president of the Economic Development Corporation of Elkhart County.

Based on the company’s job creation plans, the IEDC committed an investment in Smoker Craft Inc. of up to $600,000 in the form of incentive-based tax credits. The IEDC will also commit up to $200,000 from the Hoosier Business Investment tax credit program based on the company’s planned capital investment in Indiana. These tax credits are performance-based, meaning the company is eligible to claim incentives once Hoosiers are hired and investments are made.

Elkhart County Council approved real and personal property tax incentives.

IDVA launches statewide campaign Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs has launched a statewide campaign to raise awareness about the state’s Military Family Relief Fund. The fund is designed to assist veterans and their dependent family members experiencing financial hardship with an emergency grant of up to $2,500.

The grant can be used to cover the cost of basic needs such as housing, utilities, food, medical services, basic transportation and other essential household expenses.

Richard Saunders, a veteran who served in the Army, applied for relief from MFRF after losing his job due to COVID. Saunders was awarded funds that helped him secure housing and keep up with utility and vehicle payments.

“After losing my job due to the pandemic, I was behind on bills and needed help to make ends meet,” said Saunders. “I contacted my county veteran service officer and that’s when he told me about the Military Family Relief Fund. It helped me get back on

my feet after a difficult time.”

Legislative changes signed into law this summer removed some eligibility requirements, increasing access to a larger number of Indiana veterans.

The changes also freed funds for IDVA to launch the awareness campaign.

Grants are provided on a caseby-case basis and may not exceed a lifetime limit of $2,500.

The MFRF is funded through the sale of military specialty license plates.

Veterans who need assistance are encouraged to apply, even if they had been denied previously.

OBITUARIES Eileen E. Burkmire A Native of Iowa

Eileen E. Burkmire, 78, Middlebury, passed peacefully with loved ones by her side Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021.

Eileen, born a twin, began life in Emmetsburg, Iowa, July 17, 1943. She was born the daughter of the late Carl Runneberg and Edna Mae (Stover) Runneberg. (,/((1 ( Eileen grew up in rural Pocahontas County, %85.0,5( Iowa; she enjoyed sharing memories of her time spent with siblings on the farm, from chores to playing in the hay, hideand-seek in the cornfields, playing dress-up with sisters and cousins to Sunday gatherings with neighbors and family.

Eileen’s love for music led her to having the privilege playing the saxophone for the Lauren’s High School band until she graduated in 1962. Eileen had many joys in life. Watching her grandchildren grow and flourish was one of her great loves. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends; she spent time riding horses in her early days of saddle club. She liked to go fishing, reading, music, dancing, working in her vegetable and flower gardens, sewing, stitching and crocheting special items for her children and grandchildren. She graciously donated her time and sewing talents to help others in need.

Eileen was previously married to Donald Leith of Pocahontas, Iowa. They had three children together, Dennis, Dean and Debra. After their divorce, Eileen married Edwin Burkmire in Elkhart June 29, 1974. Ed’s children, Karen, Mike, Kathy and Doug, along with Eileen’s three children formed a new family.

Eileen and Ed together bought and ran Southern Style Restaurant for nearly 20 years in Goshen. Many came from all over to have some of the best biscuits and gravy in town. Eileen and Ed enjoyed traveling together. Israel, Alaska, Hawaii and, of course, Iowa, to name some of their favorite spots.

This servant of God, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and best friend is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Edwin Burkmire; seven children, Dennis Leith and Dean (Patti) Leith, both of Creston, Iowa, Debra (Michael) Jacka, Middlebury, Karen (Don) Schnoebelen, Elkhart, Mike (Jen) Burkmire, Wasilla, Alaska, Kathy (Ron) Dresser, Fort Wayne, and Doug (Lori) Burkmire, Plainfield; 18 loving grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three siblings, Jerry (Mary) Runneberg, Laurens, Iowa, Luverne (Janet) Runneberg, Everly, Iowa, and Sheryl Runneberg, Spencer, Iowa; and many loved nieces and nephews.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Edna Mae Runneberg; twin sister, Elaine Jarrett; and brother-in-law, Norman Jarrett.

In accordance with Eileen’s wishes, cremation was chosen. The family will be holding a memorial service along with a family and friends celebration of life at a later date.

Eileen was a beautiful soul and will be missed by many.

IDEM awards pollution prevention grants Indiana Department of Environmental Management awarded five Indiana businesses a total of $50,000 in grant funding through a partnership with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Purdue Manufacturing Extension Partnership. Each business has been awarded $10,000 in this first round of grant funding.

This grant funding provides up to 50% of the cost to implement pollution prevention projects, which were developed following water, air, solid waste, toxics, and energy audits at each facility.

IDEM’s W.A.S.T.E. Audit Program provides on-site or virtual technical assistance at a significantly reduced cost to Indiana manufacturers. Each participating facility received 16 hours of training and up to 40 hours of technical assistance from the Purdue MEP program and is eligible for funding to implement improvement proj-

ects. Below is the local recipient selected to receive the first round of funding: BCI Solutions Inc. (Bremen) received grant funding to train staff on compressed air basics and energy savings to improve institutional knowledge. Also, BCI Solutions will switch to more efficient light fixtures at its facility and anticipates to save 50,000 kilowatt hours annually.

I am excited to welcome new families, schedule tours and help families learn how to reserve a seat in grades one to five!”

As part of a “Learning Recovery Grant” in Indiana House Bill 1008, the two organizations are working together to provide tutors and space for students in the KidsCare after-school programs at Model, Waterford and Chandler Elementary schools and at the Goshen Clubhouse.

Indiana lawmakers passed the legislation to help students who have experienced learning loss; the fallen behind in acquiring anticipated grade level academic skills and knowledge; or have scored below academic standards due to the disruption in student education caused by coronavirus.

“We are excited to be able to provide this opportunity for additional tutoring at our locations.

Young people have been through a lot in the past 18 months with periods of remote learning. We want

to make sure they’re getting the help that they need,” said Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County President and CEO Kevin Deary.

At times during the pandemic, students missed out on in-person contact with their teachers, socialization with their peers and the support of other school staff members. With the grant money, Goshen Schools is hiring two tutors to work at each Boys & Girls Clubs KidsCare location.

Those tutors will work one-onone with KidsCare students identified by the Goshen Schools as needing extra assistance. The tutors and students will meet a couple times each week, developing a learning experience that builds on what is happening at school.

“GCS students have reportedly experienced less learning loss than some schools, which is a

credit to GCS teachers and staff, but it has still been difficult to meet the individual needs of all students,” Associate Superintendent Alan Metcalfe said.

He said the extra tutoring students will receive will benefit all who participate. Additionally, the students with special needs or those who relearning in their second language, may need the extra support to get to, or stay on, grade level.

“The in-person tutoring will go a long way toward making up for lost in-person instruction, and provide a setting where questions can be answered and misunderstanding corrected on the spot,” Metcalfe said.

Progress in the program will be monitored and reported to the state throughout the school year.

Boys & Girls Club teams up with Goshen Schools

Goshen stair manufacturer celebrates Manufacturing Day Between 75 and 100 Goshen area eighth graders toured the high tech facilities of StairSupplies/Viewrail Tuesday, Oct. 12, to learn and see for themselves how a contemporary manufacturing environment functions, and to explore career opportunities. Students will participate in contests related to work activities, and prizes will be awarded based on speed and accuracy.

Tours and activities will be conducted at the StairSupplies/ Viewrail training center, and at

wood and metal production facilities.

StairSupplies/Viewrail is celebrating Manufacturing Day in conjunction with the National Association of Manufacturers and the Manufacturing Institute. This event is an outreach to demonstrate to local students how entirely new careers are being created in the Goshen community. These new careers require a newly skilled workforce to meet the daily challenges of manufacturing a world-

class product.

Letter to the editor Farmers seeing results of their labor Dear Editor: The leaves are changing colors. Summer’s heat and humidity is giving way to cool autumn breezes.

This is the best time for hog roasts, bon fires and s’mores. This is a wonderful time of year, especially for farmers. It is when we get to see the results of our labor for the year.

And we know how to grow corn and soybeans. Indiana is the fourth-largest producer of U.S. soybeans and the fifth-largest producer of U.S. corn. We’ve accomplished this despite planting fewer acres than many of the other top-producing states on the list.

Most of our corn and soybean

crops are used to feed hogs, poultry, dairy cattle, beef cattle and other livestock on Hoosier farms.

In addition to livestock feed, nearly half of the state’s corn is processed in one of the state’s 14 ethanol-production facilities, which gets burned as fuel in Hoosiers cars.

Despite all of this consumption, we still need to move large piles of soybeans and corn to new places.

That’s where the Indiana Corn Marketing Council (our state’s corn checkoff) and the Indiana Soybean Alliance (our state’s soybean checkoff) add their expertise.

The checkoffs are funded, invested and managed by Indiana farmers to assist them in making their

crops more valuable.

The No. 1 job of the checkoffs is to move the state’s corn and soybeans to export markets around the world. Organizations such as the U.S. Soybean Export Council, the U.S. Grains Council, the U.S. Meat Export Federation and the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council have offices in most of the countries around the world promoting our crops to end-users who need them.

So, enjoy the season, be patient with farm equipment on the road, and know as those crops are being harvested, Indiana’s economy is growing stronger.

Elkhart Civic Theatre offering Stand-up Comedy 101 class ECT’s Michael Cripe Studio is offering a six-week stand-up comedy class for those who want to learn about the art and craft of making audiences laugh, using nothing but a microphone.

The Saturday morning class meets from 8–10 a.m. Jan. 22, 29, Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26. In addition, there will be a class performance and competition in front of a live

There will also be a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle with proceeds going to local veterans.

Stand-up Comedy 101 will cover everything from writing jokes and structuring an act to dealing with hecklers, along with lots more – including the business aspects of getting booked (and paid) as a stand-up performer.

Classes will be taught by professional comedians Brad Miller and Sean Shank. Class size is limited, so apply as early as possible.

Participants must be at least 16 years old, and students under 18 require parental permission.

Price for the class is $50 per student.

Scholarship recipients will have their class fee covered. Individuals can apply simply by recording a two-minute video that states why they want to become a comedian and closes with the best street joke they know (comedian lingo for jokes shared friends).

Videos longer than two minutes (total run time) will not be accepted. Videos must be received

Celebrate MPL’s 10th anniversary of Mini Golf Celebrate Mini Golf @the Library’ 10th anniversary by playing mini golf from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Middlebury Public Library.
