After undergoing renovations and restrictions placed on local businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, Goshen Theater was unable to show free movies until “The Wizard of Oz” issued in its return in April. Now, with renovations complete and restrictions currently lessening, the Goshen Theater is officially reopen for programs such as free movie night. The theater will now continue its tradition of holding free movies the second and fourth Friday of each month throughout the year. Prior to Amber Burgess, Goshen Theater managing director, taking over the event in 2018, a group of citizens rallied together to do market research on whether the theater should be restored and how to do so. Organizations and citizens, including Eyedart Creative Studio, began doing programs at the theater to bring people back in. One of these programs included free movies. However, Burgess mentioned that further back in history, before multiplexes were around, the Goshen The-

FREE MOVIES ater would tick sell low price tickets and play a movie repeatedly throughout the day so the moviegoer could come and go all day watching the movie with that single ticket. “Free movies have always been in the culture of the Goshen Theater,” she emphasized. Those attending free movie nights will be able to witness Goshen Theater in its newly renovated state. The $5.2 million renovation project helped to transform the theater as well as making it safer and more enjoyable for attendees. For example, asbestos and lead paint were removed and a fire suppression infrastructure set up. “It was things not necessarily visible to the eye, but important for safety,” Burgess commented. Some visible changes include an expanded lobby, which houses the seats, concession stand and bar. An

l t k elevator now makes all four levels of the theater accessible to everyone. Floors were refinished, new seats installed and new tapestries hung on the walls. In the ballroom, the original ceiling has been restored. Additional bathrooms have also been added. The projector, sound and tech room were also redone and upgraded. The goal for the theater-goer is to not only provide a way to experience the fine arts, but also connect visitors with a historic space that is a part of Goshen. Previously the greatest turnout to a movie was “Hocus Pocus” in 2018, with more than 650 people in attendance. Now seating for the events are limited in following with local guidelines.
